we got to go outside in the smoker's pit during lunch, most people didn't eat there, it was pretty windy. People drew, talked, hacky sack. Smoking was illegal in schools by the time I got to high school. I also cut from the cafeteria to my shop through the smoker's pit just to be outside. The door at the other end was locked so a teacher had to open it to let us in.

My hometown where I didn't go to high school, kids old enough to drive could go home during lunch. I'm sure most of them just hit the McDonald's drive thru.
