Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet
Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)
Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked
#these just sum up my personal takes at the years in question and also what i'm seeing on tumblr/other social media#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#and i actually have a lot more thoughts to share on this series#specifically relating to the cultural impact#there is SO much about the show that goes unappreciated in hindsight because of how public perception of it has soured#and i totally fell into this as well--i still regularly rewatch hbomberguy's video absolutely dismantling the series and he isn't wrong!!#but what i'm saying is that i think it's easy for us to look at a piece of media (especially one so massively popular) like sherlock...#with very black-and-white lenses. it wouldn't have become so popular if there wasn't something inherent in it that resonated with people#and that's being buried (and i totally forgot it) because 'sherlock is cringe and problematic. can't believe i liked that'#which again it IS full of issues and those are well-documented as they should be. future portrayals should not repeat those mistakes#BUT being able to impact so many people is a merit in itself. and that's only possible because of other genuinely good things about the show#yes the way they handled the relationship between john and sherlock was riddled with problems YES it was often queerbaiting#AND the way they portrayed that relationship had a deep effect on me. i saw a lot of myself in sherlock and the complex way he loved john#the nuanced feelings he had about john's marriage to mary. the part (in s4!) where john calls him inhuman for not feeling romantic love#there was genuine intention and care put into some parts of this show and it comes through in scenes like those. they impact people.#and because of this realization i'm going to (eventually) do a rewatch of the show. i'm much older and i want to see how i'll view it now#but i want to go into it--and i want everyone who engages with it still--to have an open mind and evaluate it for what it is#not what we expected it to be (secret episode anyone?) or what the cultural drift has turned it into (the tiktok of sherlock's mind palace)#but the messy problematic somewhat-heartfelt massively significant and ultimately meaningful piece of media it actually was#anyway that's my thoughts would love to hear y'all's perspectives#funny how after all this time making a sherlock post still feels like i'm poking a bees' nest lol please be kind!#kay can i just catch my breath for a second#kay has a party in the tags

Heavenly Boss Episode Four: D.I.A.B.L.O.
âWelcome the wackiest episode of the season! When Elves and Diablos clash over the fates of a fallen cherub trio, things sure do happen.â
Oh, hello. Docile here, welcome back to Heaven! I know things were a bit wild and confusing last time. Let me try and explain a bit.
Apparently the first Heavenâs blessing company C.H.E.R.U.B. had been under the guidance of one of my previous bosses, Kiva. I donât know why anyone would approve of her, other than sheâs famous for her singing in both Heavens. Instead of spreading faith and love, she wanted more fame and a chance to create her own world on Earth. She briefly used the cherubsâ powers to revive certain people on Earth and kill off others deemed âunworthyâ in Godâs eyes. There is a good reason why no one should bring back the dead. Even C.H.E.R.U.B. and my company E.L.F. know that would only cause overpopulation, war, and an alteration of history. It broke my heart when we had to reverse the damage Kiva had done. In the process, we freed C.H.E.R.U.B. from Kivaâs influence, Tirred from her influence and sent the dead back to the other side. We also had to erase the memories of the event from the mortals for obvious reasons. Thankfully, Deerie just straight up banished Kiva and her groupâŚI heard they got arrested on Earth, but I have a feeling they may come back.
Tirredâs been experiencing a few struggles with getting over the event. He had given into his desire for more status and like many angels in Heaven, he tends to see demons as âlesser than.â Heâs being monitored under supervision for a bit just in case, but I think he can fix up his attitudeâŚmostly.
Recently, I got an update on how C.H.E.R.U.B. is doing. They had failed to save the life of a greedy inventor and were banished to Earth. I have a bad feeling that theyâll get corrupted in Hell and return for revenge against their I.M.P. rivals. Iâm all for keeping I.M.P. in line to try and stop their horrible mass murders, but fighting fire with fire usually doesnât end well. Although I think that indigo sheep, Collin, has the purest heart of the three.
So far, weâve been doing business in Heaven as usual: record keeping on human life, plus spreading Godâs words of good faith (and trying to leave out the bad messages of âditch your loser friends who you canât use.â) Thereâs a difference between leading cooperatively and leading selfishly. True leadership requires lifting others up as well as yourself. I guess our Heavenly Father doesnât trust anyone else due to Lucifer trying to take His throne all those centuries ago. Paperwork is always tedious but it must be done. I know our business tithers between legal and illegal but weâll deal with any consequences that may arise. My job is my passion and my employees are like my family.
Right now, my team and I are discussing some ways to meet and collaborate with C.H.E.R.U.B. I think they need some guidance on properly interacting with humans. Plus, I think Sunna and I are tempted to give those cute cherubs some hugs. Truthfully, I hope we can get to them before they âsink further down,â if you catch my drift. Ideally, C.H.E.R.U.B. could stay on Earth and continue protecting humanity. Or we could provide them sanctuary in our Heaven. The first option seems more likely due to both Deerieâs rules and interdimensional complications. Itâs very rare for an individual to travel to the parallel universesâŚand Earth is in the middle of all the Heavens and Hells!
But hey, surely itâs worth a try, right?
Sunna was peacefully sleeping on one of the chairs around the smooth table at E.L.F. headquarters. The elves were seated in their spots with Docile at the head of the table.
âAlright guys,â he said. âThis is a very important mission. With Lord Gabrielâs help, Iâve pinpointed C.H.E.R.U.B.âs location to be in a forest near a lake, not too far from that inventorâs old mansion.â He pointed to certain spots on a holographic map in front of them. âIt appears they briefly stayed in a church for sanctuary last December and are now trying to stay low. Gabriel said they had been helping other humans in secret but havenât gotten rid of their desires for acknowledgement, praise and material gains.â
âHold up,â said Tirred with his usual yawn. âI thought that C.H.E.R.U.B. never asks for any fees.â
âThat is true, but Iâm talking about what they seek. The three cherubs were raised in a culture that values perfection, reward and the pursuit of happinessâŚâ
Tirred coughed, âAmericans,â which earned him a glare from his boss.
Docile continued, âEven Heavenâs citizens have flaws of their own. Selfishness exists in everyone, no matter how altruistic they try to be. C.H.E.R.U.B. knows that if they spread love, they can also feel good about themselves. But they always expect something in return for their work. Money, praise, Godâs grace, whatever it is. The point is, they never help others just for the sake of doing so.â
âThat actually makes sense,â Timmid added, brushing back her short white hair. âI wonder if they were so quick to collaborate with us because they just wanted us to promote their company.â
âWhich is what weâre randomly doing instead of, you knowâŚworrying about ourselves in our reality!" Tirred added, waving his hands for emphasis. âWe shouldnât have to care about some other cheesy company.â
Sunna happily mumbled âcheeseâ in her sleep.
âYou have a good point Tirred, but this is different,â Docile elaborated. âC.H.E.R.U.B. may be from another realm, but that doesnât mean we shouldnât at least try to help them out. Remember that we help humans and angels alike when we can.â
âWe canât help everybody,â Tirred said. âEspecially those humans and demons whoâŚâ
âWeâre not talking about them,â Docile added, holding up a hand. âThereâs no need to be a downer when Iâm trying to spread light onto a dire situation here, okay?â
Tirred crossed his arms. âIâm helping you see the reality of things. The other angelic orders wonât approve of this. Especially since traveling to the parallel realms is forbidden!â
âAnd the reality is that we will continue on with this mission because itâs the right thing to do,â Docile argued, standing his ground. âIt is our job to help those in need, no matter how bizarre the situation may be. So for your sake, I suggest you keep yourself in line.â
Tirred grumbled and backed away slightly. Docile sighed and straightened up.
âPlus, we arenât traveling to the other Heaven. Weâre going to Earth. Thatâs where C.H.E.R.U.B. is.â He glanced over at the large leather bound Bible that allowed them to travel to Earth. He didnât know how much longer Azrael and Samuel would allow him to keep it, but hopefully a bit longer.
âWonât we need disguises again?â Timmid asked. âOr Sunna?â
âI think weâll be alright with going in our true forms,â said Docile. âBut remember to lay low and stick together. After all, C.H.E.R.U.B. will be in their regular formsâŚmight as well meet angel to angel.â
 âOkay,â said Timmid.
There was a knock on the door, which startled Sunna awake. âGuys, do you hear that?â
âThat was the door,â called Timmid.
Sunna walked over and opened it. âHello,â she said as two men entered. One was short and fat, the other was tall and thin.
 âAre thoseâŚsupervillains?â asked Timmid.
âMore like superheroes!â called the thin man. He had an elegant white mustache and white-gray skin. He wore a white top hat with a purple brim and old time glasses with purple lens. His suit was white with a large purple cross in the center, the arrow pointing up. His boots were purple and his cape was light blue.
The squat man beside him wore a white suit with thin blue lines on it with a beige collar. He wore a white bowler hat with a blue trim and white rimmed glasses with teal lens. His mustache was black and his skin was white-gray. Both men had halos and white wings.
âIâm Straight Nate!â greeted the thin man. âCraftsman of all things straight and narrow! This is my partner Kyle Kipton!â
âNice to meet you both!â Docile said, shaking their hands. âHowâd you get into Heaven?â
Nate explained. âI wasnât always a young man. Kyle and I ran Kyle-Nate Tools, a local shop for farmers. Earlier today, we were giving food, eggs and farming equipment to the poor. We couldâve saved so many. We both got involved in our job and felt so much younger than before. It was marvelous! Turns out that Lyle Liptonâs anti-aging machine in his factory was sending out rays that turned us younger and younger by the day. Our customers soon grew suspicious when we suddenly appeared as children. Both of us were almost handed over to police. We raced toward Lyleâs place, hoping to get back to our normal ages. But before we could reach him, the mob had cornered us with torches and pitchforks. We refused to give them what they wanted and theyâŚkilled me. It was a miracle that Lyleâs machine secrets didnât get out. Everyone believed the mobsters to be crazy. Thanks to some angel magic, no one else sought to be young again.â
âI died shortly after Nate,â said Kyle. âAlmost thought about taking my life, but Covid 19 did that for me.â
 âSorry,â said Sunna.
âBrother bucking Covid ruins everything!â Docile spat.
âWait,â Tirred asked. âIf you turned into children, why do you look soâŚâ
âWise?â Kyle finished with a shrug. âWho knows? Age doesnât matter for saints up here. We stay the same age as when we died on Earth like the sinners do in Hell.â
âWell that story was a load of rubbish,â Tirred scoffed.
 âDonât be rude,â Sunna chided.
âItâs alright,â Nate said. âKyle and I are trying to figure out what do to next now that weâre in Heaven. I wonder if there are any farms around that could use our help.â
âIâve never heard of farms in the sky before,â Kyle said.
âWell Heaven has a whole society like Hell does, so schools, farms, houses, pretty much anything from all time periods exist here,â said Docile.
âHave you heard of the Canadians?â asked Sunna. âThey are anti-cannibals, against eating meat in all forms. A bunch of French-speaking vegetarian cultured folk. A bit eccentric. They make the best maple syrup and host the best air hockey games. You know, literally in the airâŚâ
Nate rolled his eyes. âPeople are so quick to judge these days.â
On a nearby television screen, a commercial showed a dark teal skinned elf wearing a black outfit and a black hat, twirling a cane. âAre you looking for work to make solemn stories and formal films? Well call me at Sully Siriusâ Serious Idea Studios, where you can create art and get rich! The one who makes the best creation will receive two free tickets for Woo-Hoo Land! But stillâŚI have standards for heavenâs sake!â A brief clip showed Sully selling holy water bottles at the theme park.
 âWierdo,â muttered Kyle.
âWell, I wish you two the best of luck up here,â said Docile. âThanks for stopping by.â
âAnytime,â said Nate. Nate and Kyle waved goodbye before exiting out the door.
Docile turned to a winged cherub deer.
âYou think weâll succeed in our mission?â
âYeah, oh yes, yes, yes!â Doe-Doe trilled genuinely, typing notes on an IPad while wearing yellow overalls. âGo beyond the rules and you do you! Yeah!â

Docile, Tirred and Timmid stood outside in front of their headquarters building, the heavenly sky shining down above them. The white building and the golden wing designs attached to it shone brightly in the light. Tirred briefly glanced enviously beyond a wrought iron golden gate toward the direction of the silver Holy City surrounded by glowing halos. Timmid took a deep breath and flipped through the Bible until coming across a passage to create a portal to Earth. After she chanted and drew a teal blue sigil with chalk, a gap opened up. A fearful Timmid led the way through, while Docile and Tirred followed.
The trio arrived at the vast meadow surrounded by forest trees and the shining lake. The sun shone brightly in the sky while a few white clouds dotted the horizon. Several birds chirped on nearby hanging branches, while brown squirrels and rabbits hopped along the grassy plain.
Docile sniffed the air deeply and sighed. âNature truly is a wonderful thing. Thereâs something so genuine about Earth that makes it soâŚvast and beautiful.â
Tirred rolled his eyes. âHeaven will always be the superior place. It has marvelous light, gold, angels and the Almighty of course.â
âBut the living world is unique in its own way. Itâs the birthplace of all the saints and sinners. They make up the majority of the afterlife. Without this place, Heaven and Hell alike wouldnât function the way they do now. No technology, no flare, no diversity. Our current worlds today are what some mortals call a âmelting pot.â Different ingredients tossed together into one societal dish.â
âBlast, boss! Enough with your metaphorical mumbo-jumbo,â Tirred sighed, briefly tugging his pointed ears in frustration. âDo you even realize what could happen if we meet with other beings too long? Reality itselfâŚâ
 He imitated an explosion.
Timmid laughed a bit. âWhoâs spewing mumbo-jumbo now?â She playfully elbowed Tirred. âRelax, Tir. Docile knows what heâs doing. Itâs risky but itâs for the greater good.â
âGreater good, my ass,â he muttered.
âIf you wanna get your good ass kicked, then be my guest,â Timmid wiggled her eyebrows playfully as Tirred turned red in the face.
Docile summoned his golden staff and slowly moved it in the air in front of him. The staff tip briefly glowed when he aimed it at a lower part of the hill. He spotted something small and white flying in the same direction. Docile mentioned for his coworkers to follow. They headed down the hill until they arrived at a white park bench. There were some passerby walking their dogs or chatting on their cell phones. Several women pushed strollers around, while a child tossed bread crumbs for the ducks. The paths were lined with streetlamps and red rose bushes.
Just then, Docile spotted a flying boy and two winged sheep sitting close together on a bench. No one seemed to pay them any mind.
 âBingo!â Docile grinned.
The periwinkle sheep Collin sat and examined the park. The yellow sheep Keenie straightened up her yellow dress and red bow. Cletus sat in the middle in his reddish overalls, looking bored. Several white feathers fell off their wings and their halos flickered.
âI donât understand,â Cletus said dejectedly. âWeâve done all we can to make amends. Weâve saved people, gave them advice, and lived among the humans. Why canât we go back?â
Collin sniffed as tears started to trickle down his face. âWhy canât Deerie let us back? We were doing so well in Heaven. Our clients and the humans were always grateful for the work we did.â
Keenie stamped one of her hooves. âItâs so not fair! Deerie didnât even give us a chance. She just sent us here to suffer and rubbed it in our faces!â
âIf only that filthy imp leader didnât blind me during the battle,â Cletus scowled. âKilling Lyle was just an accident. I was this close to eliminating them on the spot!â
âKilling is a bad thing,â Collin mentioned, straightening up. âOur job is never to kill, but to save and spread love!â
âLike I said before Collin, you still joined us in shooting at our rivals,â said Cletus. âEliminating the threat is sometimes necessary.â
âWe also have Exorcists for a reason,â Keenie added. âTo eliminate all those shitty sinners and keep both Earth and Heaven safe from them. Those Hell table scraps are just as bad as them, if not worse!â
âW-w-whatever happened to âthou shalt not kill?â âLove thy neighbor?ââ Collin asked, flying up and staring hard at his companions.
The cherubs hovered in the air.
âThose demons arenât our neighbors,â Cletus told Collin.
âI know that, but still, we couldâve at least taken the fight outside the opera theater! Oh and maybe saved that singer, too.â
âWhen the imps were in the way, right there?â Keenie asked. âWe had to watch over Lyle, too.â
âWe had to save his life at any cost,â Cletus said, leaning in.
âB-b-but we didnât, didnât we?â Collin finished. âWe all played a part in our fate and now in a few days, weâll be down below facing our worst nightmares!â
Collin broke down into hysterical sobs, as Keenie wrapped him in a hug. âOh CollinâŚâ
The cherubs flew off toward the open meadow, leaving the park behind and looking around.
Just then, E.L.F. made their entrance in front of them, floating down gracefully on white wings in their own beams of sparkly light. Docile was in the center, Tirred to his right, Timmid to his left. Spiked white halos hung over their heads. C.H.E.R.U.B. stared quizzically at them.
Keenie glared. âGo away, demons! Weâre tired of seeing you in your silly costumes!â
âYou here to m-m-mock us some more?â Collin asked in anger.
âWe come in peaceâŚâ Docile began, but didnât finish. Cletus let out a combination of mournful cries and yells to the sky, causing the nearby humans to glare at them and scatter away.
âYou wonât get away with this, I.M.P.! Youâll pay for what you did to us and the humans you slaughtered!â
Cletus finished his cries when a sudden force knocked everyone backwards. They straightened themselves up in the air. The ground broke apart and a column of red, orange and yellow flames shoot up from the opening.
E.L.F. and C.H.E.R.U.B. looked in wide-eyed terror at three small shadowy figures hovering forward through the flames. Three shadows with glowing yellow eyes.
âYou seek revenge and are thirsty for blood?â came a low choir of voices.
The flames vanished, revealing a demonic trio. A pointed tail, sharp yellow teeth, a clawed hand holding a black Satanic book...
âWe can help satiate your desiresâŚâ
The leader appeared, looking like a twisted version of Cletus. He had teal fluffy hair and pale white skin, his teeth sharp and yellow. His eyes were large and yellow with white sclera. He was chubby like Cletus but instead of angelic wings, he had small black bat wings with long red fingers within the flaps. He wore a dark blue undershirt, a black shirt collar and teal colored overalls, plus brown boots. Two reddish orange horns curved down to meet his chin. He put away his black Satanic book.
The corrupted Collin counterpart took the appearance of a bulky anthropomorphic yellow ram. His furry hooves were tan colored with sickly yellowish tips. He wore a wine colored red suit with a black bow tie under his thick neck. His undershirt was orange with an upside down black cross in the center. Sheathed under a black belt was a gun, a dagger and a few other weapons. His teeth, eyes and face were all a dull yellow, although a few black dots rested under his left eye. Ogre-like ears stuck out around his head of thick black wool. Protruding in curves from his head were two thick crimson-colored ram horns with little lines running down the surface. Little black wings held him in the air.
The last diablo was a blue anthropomorphic ram and Keenieâs dark counterpart. Her hooves were purple with dark green tips. Her dress was dark blue with a green bow around it. Her dress moved from blue to various shades of green and teal, becoming lighter at the ends. The hem of her dress was torn and gave the appearance of blue flames as part of the design. Black gloves covered her hands like an executionerâs. She grinned with yellow sharp teeth against a dark blue face. Her eyes had dark orange pupils, teal irises and white sclera. Her wild hair was a lighter shade of blue, moving like flames in the wind. Like her companions, she had black bat wings and curved red-orange ram horns. All the diablos could also grow pointed tails and retract them.
The leader sneered. âSurely youâve heard of us. You saw our commercial, didnât you?â
 âWhat commercial?â Docile asked.

A large Leviathan monster opened its mouth wide, revealing sharp teeth, a long slimy tongue and a dark throat. The camera zoomed into the darkness before a red light appeared at the end of the tunnel. A bleak world with a red sky was revealed. A futuristic city in the distance was tall, black and metal: Sin City. The ground was black as was the grass. There was a pandemonium capital building not too far away along with a variety of shops set in a dystopian world: Tiamatâs Treasure Things, Kaliâs Corner, Xenomorph Labs.
No Hazbin Hotel or I.M.P headquarters to be found.
A sign read âDiablo Denâ and pointed down. The camera moved to show an underground tunnel with torches on either side. An entire subculture of demons lived down within the sewers and damp tunnels. Metal waterproof houses were situated under fluorescent lights on the ceiling. The leader popped up on the screen.
âSalutations! Iâm Erebos! Welcome to Hell! Guess you must have done something evil to get here, and evil people deserve to give enemies special cruses!â
The jingle began, with organs playing.
âDoes it make you want to yell?â asked Devvin, the yellow ram as a man was shown getting a promotion over a man dressed in rags.
âWhen an enemy ends up well?â asked Dammna the blue ram female as a rapist was pardoned from his crime.
âDo you frown from ear to ear?â sang Erebos as a man shot at several anti-LGBTQ protestors.
âWhen your rivals donât shed a tear?â they all sang as a bully in a baseball cap laughed as a kid cowered in a corner.
âLocked up in a rut?â sang Devvin with a pose.
âA foe seeking your gut?â Dammna sang and posed.
âWe can make them cold and dead!â sang Erebos.
âEven give you their head!â They all did villain poses.
âCause here at D.I.A.B.L.O.!â they sang as âDIABLOâ appeared in bloody letters surrounded by pitchforks and the trademark icon.
âWeâre the masters of destruction from down below!â sang Devvin as Cletus shot fireballs at a barbed wire fence, allowing prisoners of war to escape. Devvin led the way as Dammna waved a flag with a pentagram and âB.U.R.E.H.Câ on it.
âCause here at D.I.A.B.L.O.!â they sang as the logo appeared again.
âJust name your price and weâre good to go!â sang Dammna as Erebos gave a greedy grin at a human handing him a bag of gold.
âSpreading sickness, chaos and hate!â Devvin sang as he and Dammna gave each other a high five with their hooves.
âHistory altered and fate!â sang Dammna as atomic bombs went off in reverse as clocks ran backwards and forwards.
âWe do the dirty work for you!â sang Cletus as Devvin concocted a deadly virus and dropped it on coughing humans.
âAnd stirring up world wars, too!â added Devvin as Dammna whispered something in a soldierâs ear, resulting in two armies fighting on the field.
So sit right backâŚâ sang Erebos before they all sang in discord, ââŚand let us curse a soul for you!â
 âOh, we are the D.I.A.B.L.O.!â
âHow the primal chaos shall flow!â

C.H.E.R.U.B. and E.L.F. just stood there, stunned.
Just then, Blitzo, Moxxie and Millie entered through a portal onto the grass. Moxxie was trying not to fall, while Millie safely put away Stolasâ grimoire in a small black backpack.
âAlright gang,â called Blitzo. âApparently someone wants us to kill that ginger-ass tour guide we saw last time. Looks like heâs at Lyleâs old house jacking off and snatching Lyleâs old possessions.â
Millie tried not to throw up. âThis world is even crazier than ours!â Then she pulled out a dark sword and brightened. âLetâs keep on killinâ then!
âSir, please donât tell Lyle any of this,â Moxxie pleaded. âYou know heâll get mad if we fail this mission.â
âOh I already sent him a text,â Blitzo grinned, holding up his phone. The text read âOff 2 kill tour intruder. Might want 2 sell ur stuff.â Moxxie face-palmed.
âIâm already tired and we havenât even made it there yet,â Moxxie complained.
âCome on Mox, get your sweet imp ass moving,â Blitzo said. âWeâll be at his house before you can sayâŚâ
The three imps came to the clearing and froze in their tracks.
 âHoly shit,â Blitzo breathed.
At that very moment, all twelve creatures divided in the four separate groups locked eyes with each other, some on the ground, and some in the air. The sky darkened to an abnormal shade of indigo, the ground suddenly warm to the touch. The air itself shifted from stale, to hot, to cold and back again. A strange energy crackled through the air, like any moment the earth would collapse underneath them. A stag with bloodstained antlers reared up his hind legs and raced across the forest as lightning flashed in the sky.
From inside the mansion, the tour guide and several people gazed out the window in awe through a telescope. The smiling man had the ginger bang over his eyes and wore a green suit and cap with dollar signs on it. He spoke too casually to the group as they took pictures on their phones.
âAnd now youâll spot several groups of tacky super-powered cosplayers about to begin an apocalyptic battle! The feuds between famous people and ordinary folk is a sight to behold!â
 0 0 0
âWho. The Fuck. Are They?!â Blitzo cried out, his voice echoing.
âOh no!â groaned Moxxie, pointing ahead. âThose are theâŚâ
âImps!â Collin cried out, all three cherubs glaring at their rivals.
 âCherubs!â Moxxie finished.
 âDiablos?!â Tirred asked.
 âElves!â sneered Devvin.
The intense stare-downs could have turned the universe upside downâŚwhich for a few moments, it did.
After several minutes of grueling silence, the first one to speak again was none other than Blitzo.
âCan someone tell me what the fuck is going on here?!â
Cletus crossed his arms. âIâll tell you whatâs going on! Because of you three monsters,â he pointed at the imps, âWeâve been banished to Earth and are this close to meeting our doom down in your filthy world!â
Blitzo just grinned smugly. âWelcome to Hell, baby. We hope you enjoy your stay.â
Cletus turned red in anger. âShut up! We may have been banished from Heaven all thanks to you, but there is no way weâre going to end up like you!â
Erebos grinned and moved slowly toward the cherubs. âYou sure about that?â
He spoke in a bone-chilling whisper that made even Cletus forget his wrath for a moment. âItâs clear that youâll never be allowed to return to Heaven. Why wish for something you canât obtain anymore? The only thing you can do nowâŚâ he mentioned in the direction of the imps, ââŚis take back what youâve lost.â
Cletus glared at him. âI donât need filthy demons to tell me what to do!â
âOf course you donât,â Erebos mentioned. âYour company was just trying to do the right thing. Why should you let those monsters stand in your way again?â
âStop!â called Docile. He flew gracefully in Cletusâ direction. âDonât listen to that demon.â
âYouâre one too!â Cletus seethed, flinching back.
âNo, Iâm an angel just like you,â Docile said. âThat devil is trying to divert you away from your true path. Your company may have been banished, but you can still redeem yourselves and prove the other angels wrong! Youâre already great at spreading positivity to those in need!â
âHa!â Millie called. âJust like how you cherubs failed to save the life of that old man.â
âIt was an accident, you emo slutty freak!â Keenie spat.
âThe past is then,â Docile continued to Cletus. âThis is now. You still have time to prove your innocence. I believe there is goodness in almost everyone.â
Collin flew up to the elf with wide shining eyes. âY-y-you do?â
Docile wrapped an arm around Collin. âI know it. Itâs there, even when all hope seems lost.â
Erebos snickered to Cletus. âYou really gonna believe an inverted version of yourself and his subservient goblin fuck toys?â
 The cherubs and elves gasped.
âThat is so inappropriate!â Timmid called.
âKiss your ass, sissy,â Dammna taunted as Timmid flinched away.
âMight wanna watch your words, blue bitch,â Millie growled to Dammna. âJust because weâre fellow demons, doesnât mean Iâll let you pick on others like that.â
âWhatâre you gonna do about it?â Dammna asked with a sneer. âSing a murder jingle?â
âMy coworkers and I did, actually!â
âI thought your song was very catchy!â Devvin praised.
âThank you!â beamed Millie. âNow get lost, wannabes!â
But D.I.A.B.L.O. was far from done. Erebos spoke to Cletus. âAnywayâŚthat deer cherub who kicked you outâŚshe knew that you would fall. God doesnât tolerate mistakesâŚthus those in Heaven now see you as just that, mistakes. How does it make you feel?â
âShut it, demon crap!â Keenie shrilled. She flew toward Erebos but Devvin held her back. She freed herself from his grip. Dammna flew beside Collin, who whimpered as she licked her lips.
âFace itâŚthe other cherubs wanted you three kicked out. Because you founded an illegal company that prided itself on saving human lives. You were getting famous forâŚnot following the rules. Jealousy arose.â
âHow do you know all this?â Cletus asked.
âWe have our ways,â said Erebos. âAngels and demons going to Earth is mostly illegalâŚyou know, changing of history, trauma and all.â
He flew into Cletusâ face and the Cletus flinched back in disgust. Erebos made his way around Collin and Keenie as he talked. âYou couldâve been good passive little sheep and stayed in Heaven. But you didnât.â He ran a hand through Collinâs white wooly hair. âBecause you wanted something more. Paradise wasnât enough for you.â
He grinned sinisterly at Keenie. âYou were tired of being looked down upon by the more favorable members of your kind. Always searching for a way so that yourâŚâ
He peered underneath her yellow dress, ââŚdivine talents could be brought to light.â
Keenie gave him a hard kick to the face, sending him back a bit. He scoffed in pain and rubbed his eye before straightening up and heading back toward Cletus. âAnd for a while, they did. But look where you are now. Fallen. Forgotten. Forced away from your home.â
âHeâs using you guys!â Tirred warned Cletus. âYou can still protect humanity and earn Godâs grace once again!â
âNo matter what you try to do, youâll never be able to return. Becoming demons is your destiny!â Devvin said with a dark chuckle.
âListen to the elf angels,â Collin pleaded to his boss. âThe demons are full of sin, but you know we can choose to not stoop down to their level. We can be better cherubs, improve our relations with humans.â
âRight after we get rid of all those stinking demons!â Keenie scoffed, hands on her hips. âIf we want C.H.E.R.U.B. to surviveâŚâ
âThen I.M.P. must pay, right?â Dammna asked, finishing her sentence. Keenie found herself nodding, mouth agape.
âHey, we can hear you!â Moxxie yelled, drawing out his gun. He shot it upwards but the bullet was blocked by Tirredâs golden staff. The bullet rebounded away. Moxxie stared at Tirred in disgust. âMan youâre hard to look at.â Tirred just observed him coldly.
âForget about I.M.P.!â Timmid called to the cherubs. âFocus on redeeming yourselves. Itâs the only way you can return home.â
âHelp other people for its own sake,â Docile advised. âYou donât need praise or rewards to keep doing the right thing.â
âHeâs right, Cletus,â Collin added. âHelp humans move away from sinâŚand we will as well.â Â
âHa!â barked Dammna. âSin and flaws are present in everyone, even in little angels. Itâs as natural as sex, eating, drinking and breathing. No one can resist the natural temptationsâŚâ
Blitzo grinned. âIâd like to see you try and take us out,â he told Cletus. âAfraid weâll make you a laughing stock again?â Cletus fumed.
âI hope the Exorcists erase you from existence!â Keenie shrilled.
Devvin appeared beside Keenie. âWhy call on them, when you can plan your revenge yourself?â
âNot gonna happen!â she yelled. Just after she said that, her halo flickered again. A small crack appeared on Cletusâ halo. Bits of feathers drifted from Colinâs wings.
âThis is not good,â Timmid whispered.
Erebos grinned. âOnly a matter of time now, cherubs! Itâs time to begin your journey toward justice!â
Back and forth, overlapping words, advice, taunts and threats pounded against Cletus. He felt like his head was being crushed by two opposing hands. Cletus grimaced, looking back and forth and around. He squinted and closed his eyes, curling into a ball.
âThe accident wasnât your fault, boss!â
âHelp bring back C.H.E.R.U.B. to its former glory!â
âYouâre nothing but a crying baby and a failure. No wonder Heaven doesnât want you guys.â
âThy company come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in HeavenâŚâ
 âYour demonic destiny is here!â
 âGive into sin!â
âSpread the love for here and above!â
 âENOUGH!â
Cletus spread out his arms and legs. The force sent many of the individuals back, but they quickly recovered. Lightning flashed in the sky as the battle began.
Although Blitzo, Moxxie and Millie couldnât fly like everyone else, they made up for it by their array of weapons. Blitzo fired his tan flintlock pistol, the bullets rising in the air. One bullet hit Dammnaâs hoof and she hissed in pain. Another grazed Timmidâs shoulder and she cried out.
Docile waved his hand and three golden crossbows appeared in the cherubsâ hands.
 âItâs temporary,â he warned.
Wasting no time, Collin, Keenie and Cletus fired sparkly golden arrows from their weapons at the two demonic groups. Cletus and Blitzo fired rounds at each other, both of them expertly dodging the otherâs attacks. Erebos laughed as Docile landed punches at him, which he kept blocking.
âJust as planned,â he grinned. âWhat a joy it is to see C.H.E.R.U.B. and I.M.P. duke it out.â The cherubsâ faces grew more vicious as they chased after the imps.
âStop fighting, C.H.E.R.U.B.!â Tirred called in concern, but her words fell on ignorant ears.
Erebos landed a punch to Docileâs face and he quickly retaliated via a well-aimed uppercut. âYou wonât get away with this,â Docile spat. âI donât want to fight any of you guys but it appears I have no choice.â
Timmid screamed as Devvin suddenly caught her in a headlock.
âHa! Surrender or sheâs a goner!â called Devvin. Timmid struggled in vain against his grip. Docile glared as he aimed his staff at him, debating on what to do next.
 Zing!
An arrow from Collinâs crossbow hit Devvin in the side, sending him screaming and flying off in the distance. He flew back in anger, but Timmid had already recovered. The cherubsâ golden crossbows vanished, the group now defenseless. Moxxie, Dammna, and Millie seized the opportunity to charge in, surrounding the cherubs. Timmid, Docile and Tirred blocked the path of the demons, holding them off with their golden staffs.
âI canât hold them much longer,â groaned a strained Tirred to the cherubs. âFlee while you still can!â
âWeâre not leaving you behind,â Collin said, determined.
Cletus tried to flee, but Dammna grabbed hold of him and tossed him right back with a chuckle.
Erebos arrived and smacked Tirredâs golden staff from his handsâŚhe punched at the diabloâs chest in response. Docile landed several kicks to Moxxie, sending him stumbling to the ground.
 âMoxxie!â Millie cried.
 âIâm okay!â
Millie took out a black dagger and tossed it toward Timmid. She caught it and tossed it away. Cletus continued to dodge the bullets from Moxxie and Blitzoâs weapons. Keenie charged at full speed toward Millieâs head from behind her. She was just about to land a hard blow whenâŚ
A large hand grabbed her by the hairâŚErebos, and tossed her hard toward the ground.
 Crash!
 âY-y-you monster!â Collin cried.
Keenie growled as she stood up on shaking legs, wiping the dirt from her dress. With a swoop, she lifted herself up in the air before Blitzo could shoot at her. She finally rejoined Collin and CletusâŚbut the E.L.F. members were almost drained from the battle. The cherubs and elves stood battered and back to back against the surrounding demons.
Lightning flashed as several pairs of the angelic and demonic warriors went head to head. Millie was slashing her sword from underneath Timmid and Keenie, who were punching Dammna and pulling her long blue hair. Keenie slapped Dammna across the face while Timmid yelped as she dodged Millieâs weapon from below. Timmid summoned an angelic harpoon and clashed with Millie. They moved in a dance, metal against metal. The point of the harpoon barely missed Millieâs head. Millie leaped onto the harpoon and raced on it with her sword in her mouth. Timmidâs eyes were wide with surprise. She flipped over Timmid, grabbed her sword and swung it in an arch, knocking Timmid down. The angelic harpoon clattered softly onto the grass. Docile made it vanish with a wave of his hand. Â
Moxxie fired his gun and hit Devvin several times. He hissed as black blood ran from parts of his legs. âGet the sheep, you idiot!â
âI fight my own battles,â Moxxie retorted, as he dodged Collinâs punches and blasted Devvinâs revolver out of his hand with a well-aimed shot.
Collin and Tirred shared a look, then both swooped on either side of Devvin. With two hard punches to his face, Devvin plummeted to the ground. He glared at them from below as he slowly stood up and shook his head. Tirred tossed Collin out of range of Moxxieâs bullets before he got hit himself. He gasped in pain before landing on the ground to recover. He winced and glared at Devvin. Moxxie rushed at him, but Tirred shoved him back with a force from his golden staff.
Docile, Erebos, Blitzo and Cletus were going head to head as lightning lit up the sky around them.
âTake this, you fucker!â Cletus yelled as he grabbed a nearby rock and threw it toward Blitzo. The rock exploded from Blitzoâs bullet. Another bullet hit one of Cletusâ wing tips, making him stumble in the air. Docile straightened the cherub with one hand as he twirled his staff against Erebos in the other. Erebos flapped his bat wings menacingly. The ground shook below as more cracks appeared. I.M.P. moved to higher ground, gazing at the red lava below in the ground. It created a demonic red glow near the ground. Black blood poured from the demonsâ wounds just as white blood flowed from the angelsâ.
Timmid stood up and flapped her white wings, glanced around in terror. âWe have to stop fighting!â she screamed over the yells and the noises of war. âWeâre going to destroy the Earth!â
Timmid suddenly screamed as Dammna smacked her on the head from behind. She plummeted to the ground, with Keenie catching the dazed angel and carrying her to a safe spot.
With ear-shattering yells, Cletus and Erebos rammed into each other, as did Blitzo and Docile. The leaders pushed against each other with all their might, as forces from their attacks shook the area. The demonsâ horns grew longer and eyes appeared on the angelsâ wings. Cletus and Docile glowed blue and white while Erebos and Blitzo glowed red and black. Docileâs harpoon spear pressed against Blitzoâs flintlock pistol. They all seethed and gave each other deadly glares.
Before long, the cracks and forces would spread to the rest of Earth. Heaven and Hell would collapse, the Earth being the final battleground and resting placeâŚ
The explosions knocked everyone back, sending all the creatures crashing to the ground. The forest had been burned down to timbers and steam was rising from the lake. Lyleâs mansion had been blasted apart to smithereensâŚyet the soot covered crowd still took pictures as the tour guide spewed his ever optimistic commentary. His hat was lopsided and he kicked broken glass away.
âOne of the Lipton family heirlooms is this golden money bag statue which was gifted to Lyle in the early 1970s. And itâs still standingâŚâ
The tour guide glanced down to see the statue littering the ground in pieces. ââŚor it was. I call dibs!â
The battle had been an intense stalemate. And all seemed lost as the ground prepared to swallow everyone in the lava and magma.
The dark clouds swirled in a spiral vortex before slowly parting. Sunlight shone from a circular patch of blue sky. The shaking and the yelling stopped. The cracks in the earth fused together and the world slowly got brighter like it did before. The Archangel Michael arrived from the opening, along with the cherub Deerie by his side.
Blitzo helped up his colleagues. âI think we can call this mission a successful failure.â
Millie supported Moxxie. âWhat about our target?â
âForget about him,â Blitzo said. âAnd forget about those cherubs too. Theyâre done for.â
The imps looked over at the barely stirring cherubs on the ground.
âWell, looks like we won again,â Moxxie said. âThough we really need to tone down all this fighting.â
âYeah, Iâm tired and could really use an iced coffee right now,â Blitzo said. He took out his green âmare-juannaâ horse figure and kissed it. âI knew this lucky charm would come in handy. Letâs go gang!â
The imps grinned and high-fived before disappearing through the portal to Hell.
Michael hovered in the air in all his glory, supported by broad white feathery wings. He had pale skin, blushes on his cheeks, and short blonde hair like his fallen brother Lucifer. A sword made of flames was tucked protectively near his belt. A glowing spiked white halo hung over his head with a crystal in the center. He wore a white suit and tailcoat, while several medals and badges shown from the front of his outfit.
He bore a stern expression on his face as the other groups slowly recovered.
âFour interdimensional companies fighting in the one world to cause the most damage to mortal lives. Iâm ashamed at all of you. You were lucky that no more humans got hurt.â Michael briefly glared at the cherubs and diablos.
The cherubs and elves bowed their heads in apology, while the diablos looked on.
âI ask that all of you head back to your worlds immediately. If I ever catch you fighting here again, Iâll erase every one of you from existence. Are we clear?â
âYes sir,â chimed the six angels.
âLord Michael,â said Cletus, lifting his head. âThe demonic imps have already left. And those diablos are the ones who started all this!â
âPlease Lord Michael,â said Docile. âMy company came here on behalf of the importance of C.H.E.R.U.B.âs protection. I humbly ask that you reconsider their previous errors and allow them a chance toâŚâ
A rumbling sound was heard and cracks appeared in the ground again. Two gaping holes appeared in the ground. One of them shoot fire into the air.
âThereâs our cue,â said Devvin to his companions.
Dammna grinned and pointed toward the cherubs. More cracks were forming underneath them, soon creating another hole. Erebos and his gang flew into the cherubsâ faces. âHave fun in the inferno!â cackled Erebos and his crew before they flew into the column of flames and down below. The ground closed over the portal and the flames disappeared.
Deerie laughed nervously at the frightened cherubs. âYeah, no sorry guys. Iâm afraid your test on Earth has come to an end andâŚwell, yeah thereâs only one place to go now.â
âNoooo!â the cherubs cried, huddling together.
To the horror of the cherubs and the elves, the fallen trio was starting to change in appearance. Their white wings turned stiff and black, the last of their feathers falling to the ground. Small leathery bat wings grew in their places. Their white halos cracked and fell to pieces in front of them. Keenie frantically tried to piece hers back together. Collin gasped as he held the pieces in his hooves. The halo pieces stopped glowing, fading to a stony dark gray. Keenie buried her pale face in her hoovesâŚhooves that were now morphing into sharp claws. She screamed out loud as she clawed at her face.
âLord Michael, do something!â begged Docile. But the archangel stood solemnly in the air, shaking his head.
The cherubsâ teeth soon grew sharp and white, cutting into their tongues and making them bleed. Their outfits changed from cheery pastel colors to bold fiery reds, oranges, pinks and yellows. Cletus clutched his head in pain as two small pointed horns protruded from his ginger head. The other cherubs also cried out, clutching at their newly formed horns stained with blood.
The ground collapsed underneath them, giving way to a deep hole with a reddish light and a portal to Hell between the rock walls. Luciferâs curious grinning face appeared in the opening.
The cherubs felt themselves being pulled back by a powerful force toward the portal.
âNo, no, no, no!â Cletus cried. âThis canât be happening!â
Keenie shouted out prayers to God, begging for his forgiveness. Collin wailed and bawled as he hung onto the grass for dear life.
Docile, Tirred and Timmid raced toward the cherubs.
âThereâs no point in rescuing them,â Deerie said, flying in front of them. âUnless you troublemakers want to join them.â
Docile promptly punched the doe in the face before making his way toward the struggling trio.
They each placed their right hand on the cherubsâ foreheads as light shone from their teal hands. Tirred placed his hand on Collin, Timmidâs hand was on Keenie and Docile had his hand on Cletus.
Docile chanted in the Enochian angelic language and said: âI bless each of you with a chance to find the light. No matter where you are, it is hope youâll never lose sight. You will find one person or more, whoâll help you along the way. And after discovering your true righteousness, youâll return home someday. By the will of the Lord, so may it be.â
E.L.F. removed their hands and the light faded.
âBye!â Deerie happily waved toward the cherubs before vanishing through the heavenly portal.
Timmid grabbed Keenieâs hands and pulled with all her might. Keenieâs face turned pale, her yellow dress now torn in the appearance of wildfire. The helm of her dress was red and spiked, her horns now black and curved like those of Charlieâs goat bodyguards. She had black bat wings and a pointed tail. Her wooly hair was red and her eyes were pink and yellowâŚbefore they gave off a strange red glow.
Keenie sneered at Timmid, only seeing the red face of Millie laughing at her.
 âGet away, you disgusting demon!â
Her voice sounded like her own but more distorted.
âIâm notâŚâ Timmid began but Keenie slapped her in the face before falling with a scream into the portal below.
âKeenie!â cried Collin, briefly staring down at her disappearing form. âI donât wanna die! I donât wanna die!â
Cletus had horns and black wings as well, though his face took on more of a faint reddish tone. His overalls were red with teeth designs on the pocket. His hair was red and black and darker blushes appeared on his cheeks. His pointed tail was short and red. His eyes had red irises and golden sclera.
He looked at Docile, only seeing Blitzoâs face. He revealed his new grin of sharp white teeth and glowing red eyes. âThis isnât over, I.M.P.!â
Timmid and Tirred pulled with all their might, but Cletus was soon sucked in as well.
Collin glanced at the elves with bloody tears running down his face. His eyes were golden and pink, sometimes glowing red. He had curved goat horns, a pointed tail and black bat wings. His face was almost a tan-red shade and his wooly hair was black. His outfit had changed to a red-orange.
The three elves pulled, Tirred being supported by Docile and Timmid behind him, but Collin stayed in the same spot, his hooves dangling over the chasm.
âSir!â called Tirred, as the elves were dragged inches closer toward the gap, even as they dug their feet in. âWeâre being sucked in!â
 âL-let go,â Collin whimpered.
 âWhat?!â asked Tirred.
âYou canât let yourself fall!â Docile cried, tears welling up in his eyes. âWe were supposed to save you guysâŚto help give you another chanceâŚâ The elves were almost at the edge.
Collin and the elves stared at each other in the eyes.
Collin took a deep breath as he thought of his friends.
 âI-I-Iâm sorryâŚâ
With one last wide-eyed look, Collin let go of Tirredâs hands and vanished into the darkness. The elves werenât getting pulled in anymore, rather they were pushed back a bit. The portal to Hell closed, and the ground in front of the elves sealed back together like nothing had happened.
âWhy?â Docile asked Michael, turning around.
âC.H.E.R.U.B. set themselves up for their fate. They gave into their anger and were more focused on defeating their rivals instead of properly interacting with the humans. They still disobeyed the rules thus were sent to Earth to test their faiths. Alas, they gave into their selfish desires of revenge and pursuit of glory. One can now only hope that they'll redeem themselves in HellâŚif they even survive that long. As for you three, remember my words of warning.â
Michael rose back into Heaven and vanished.
The three somber elf angels slowly rose up into the air and went through another heavenly portal back to their world. Back in paradise, Docile had never felt more alone. He gazed out at the colorful clouds through a window.
Docile didnât even look at his coworkers. âWelp, the cherubs wanted to redeem themselves and continue their company, and we couldnât save them. We failed. Thanks to those freaking diablos, theyâre down in Hell now, so itâs a shame. All they wanted was to spread love and joy to the living world. And now, theyâre separated from HeavenâŚpotentially forever.â
Tirred grumbled. âDonât say I told you so, butâŚI told you so.â
Timmid gave her boss a small hug as the three silently gazed at the clouds and sunlight.
From behind the elves, Sully Sirius did a small grin. He whispered, âNow this would make for a spectacular tragic film, donât you think?â
Docile glumly turned his head all the way around, while his body stayed in place. âPlease leave.â Sully looked at him and screamed in fright.

âThe surface escapes you upward, leaving you in freezing depths, fathoms below.                  Watching. Return. Reward. Wonder. A final squeeze sends the last breath from your lungs in a muffled scream.                           Punish.â

âSettled within a small chamber of tangled leaves and roots, within this mass of vines and green, you swear you can see a face. Female. Motherly. Her eyes closed.
The womb I grant, but withers without faith. His will shall find you again soon. His will shall find you again, but until it does, rest.âÂ

The Mask by Matt Maeson (Fjord has spent a lifetime crafting masks, but at what cost, and with such weight. Heâs not ready to take them off yet, but he gets one step closer with each day. Fjordâs second talk with Wursh about anger, picking your battles, and not letting others define who you are.)
Tell me what you know I settled my grievance by crafting a mask And I never looked back I will never grow While this anchor is chained to my feet
Waite by Lowland Hum (Xhorhas montage- Adjusting to a new city, a new culture, and having a home of your own for the first real time ever. The paranoia of feeling like youâre being watched.  A Lullaby of Home by Jessica Curry (Bazzozan, Oban, and the loss of Yasha. The feeling of betrayal that strikes deep to his core.)
Instrumental
The Difference by Noah Gunderson (Fjord and Nott are parallel stories. The weird understanding and also misunderstanding between those who are in the same place, but had very different journeys to get there, and also donât want to acknowledge just how much the same they are.)
I hope I donât miss it Though I know I probably just wonât get it Maybe we were made this way Maybe we werenât made Maybe we just got here Learning from our mistakes Maybe we donât know What weâre looking at The ever pressing question takes a toll
A Little Broken by Storm Greenwood (The Vandran scry conversation. Fjord confides in Jester about all of it, not knowing what he wants, losing his powers, being afraid of losing his friends and himself. She supports him like he never expected anyone to. Dear Wormwood by The Oh Hellos (The aftermath. When youâve named the beast you can tame it, or throw it away entirely. In a way it is freedom. Fjord and Caduceus share a private moment of encouragement and support.)
I know who I am now And all that youâve made of me I know who you are now And I name you my enemy
Kinda Feels Alright by Wild Rivers (Fjordâs friends love him so so so much. Coming clean about who you are even though it is terrifying, and finding that nothing has changed really, not in the ways that matter the most.)
I swear I should be terrified But damn, it kinda feels alright
Ginger by The Front Bottoms (Powerlessness and the Strength of Self. Fjord was never really weak, he just needed faith in himself, his abilities, and in the love of his friends.)
Back before I got struck by lightning Things were so much different than they are now I got a lot more people leaning on me And all I wanna do is make them proud But this is my body, the only thing I own entirely And itâll carry me to greatness somehow
Better in the Morning by Birdtalker (Fjord and Caduceus commune with the Wildmother and talk about the importance of faith. There is no requirement to have it all figured out immediately. You are safe, you are loved, you are wanted. Just have faith.)
Be gentle with yourself as you uncover Your best kept secrets yet to be discovered In stillness, boys, clear water to the bottom You will do better in the morning
The Dragon from God of War (The Battle at Mythburrow for the material to finish Star Razor. If there was any doubt that his friends turned family would do anything for him, it is dispelled now.)
Instrumental
Atlas: Eight by Sleeping at Last (Rebirth, Reforged, Revival.)
Here I am, pry me open What do you want to know? Iâm just a kid who grew up scared enough To hold the door shut And bury my innocence But hereâs a map, hereâs a shovel Hereâs my Achillesâ heel Iâm all in, palms out, Iâm at your mercy now And Iâm ready to beginÂ

i am golden embers from the oldest burnt out flame that somehow manages to stay alive well past the party. i donât know how we got here, but iâm drawing little cartoon skulls on the back of your hand and ruminating on death culture and our historical fascination with it, not to mention this modern day obsession. wake up, iâm worrying at you. i know, itâs been a long time since weâve talked like this, in this house with all the windows open for anyone to be able to look in and see. me, a shameless blubbering idiot and you, an omnipresent interdimensional being that changes names and faces depending on what time of day it is. i wish we could be friends like normal and not these shapeshifting spaces that descend and disappear before they can even get a chance to form. iâm out of practice, but shall we? i am the cutest boy in school, (get over it, i just am.) and you are my closest friend. at least you were when we were kids, before puberty made things weird and gender norms influenced the politics of our relationship. back when life was endless summers in a treehouse and i was the only dude in your life besides your dad, and then even more significantly when he left. we were such pure vessels of innocence, or at least i was, you were more of a terrorist in an young girlâs body. we spend our days playing with your barbies, one of many secrets we take to our graves, and we have intricate plot lines for each of their relationships. i make scenery for them out of legos, a lawn to lounge on and a clunky castle to sleep, they even had a hot tub. we have an entire world that nobody knows about and eleven thousand inside jokes based within it, this galactic sandbox that goes on for miles where nobody can hurt us. in seventh grade two boys from our school come over and spot the dolls laying in the corner of the treehouse and they give me hell for it, and i mean it gets really bad. they carelessly pull apart their tiny clothes, some of them handmade by your aunt, and hold them up like torches made of naked plastic flesh. it is startling and i know fighting them will only make it worse, will only turn them into even bigger deviants, so i donât provoke them any further and take all necessary precaution to keep it from happening again. admittedly, this is where shit starts to hit the fan with us. i tell you the next day you canât bring them in here anymore, and that this is not a storage facility for your girl stuff, to which you respond with a look only the demon possessed child that you are could invoke. we donât talk for what turns out to be the longest week of my life, and i try to compromise because i miss you terribly and all of our stories, how are all of our characters (ripped directly from episodes of 90210) even doing right now? i ask what if we just, yknow, not use the dolls anymore, but still play the game. we finally come to an agreement and spend the rest of the year lounging around telling stories in the air, playing without the physical evidence, just these long sagas that never get written down or repeated or acted out with dolls of any kind.
youâre growing up faster than i am, your body is developing first and you got a nice set of big naturals before we even get to high school. and what am i supposed to do, not notice? i try not to. i try to act like itâs totally not making me feel any type of way when you start to experiment with makeup and of course iâm not jealous of the boy band members you secretly fawn over when no one from school is around to make fun of you. what do all these meatheads got that i donât got? besides muscles and money and matching wardrobes with dope harmony skills. i magically take up guitar the next summer and whenever you start to talk about another hollywood hunk i am just like so anyway, hereâs wonderwall. you never seem to catch on, never showing to have the slightest clue, and over time our stories become fewer and farther between because youâve got new daydreams now. youâve grown tired of the dramatics in our pretend romances and you want a real one. you want jake who has a mustache and works at gadzooks in the mall or bryan who is always hogging the pinball machine at skate country. i call him a dweebmunch and you just drift further away from me. by high school we barely know each other, you can hardly even remember i exist as you join all these teams and squads and athletic girl gangs, and i still havenât lost my baby fat. youâre dating marcus who plays defense on our schoolâs football team and at some point the new normal becomes this sort of familiar strangers vibe where we barely acknowledge each other when passing in the halls but wave to each otherâs families when passing them in real life. we donât actually talk again until prom night when you show up drunkenly to my backyard like the last four years never even happened. your mascara is running and your dress is torn, your pretty hairdo that took hours at the salon that day is all disheveled, and you hold a bottle of wine to your lips like itâs water. you are barely able to steady yourself long enough to climb up into the treehouse where you find me choking on a hit of weed with a look of terror like iâve just seen a ghost. technically i have. you slur your words and ask me for a hit and iâm terrified of you, just take whatever you want, you monstrous beauty queen. you tell me that you hate your boyfriend but donât go into detail, that prom sucks and your friends suck and everyone is fake and nobody will even be able to outgrow this version of themselves because their parents never did, and at one point youâre holding up the bottle yelling with burgundy stained teeth that nobody in this town cares about anything other than football. which is true, itâs just one of those towns where our whole identity is based on touchdowns and score boards because thatâs all anybodyâs got to live for. you curl up in a corner, finding a couple of your old dolls safe and secure and you smile at me, saying you thought they werenât allowed up here anymore. i donât even look back at you when stating that obviously abby and olivia donât count since they are notorious rule breakers. you hold one up to sit atop my shoulder and talk in one of your stupid voices, requesting a live rendition of wonderwall. donât be silly, iâm eighteen now, iâm too cool for oasis and have upgraded to strictly radiohead, the bends album specifically. we start to argue like we are ten all over again when you insist i am just being pretentious because i canât acknowledge the obvious golden child that is karma police, and without thinking i retort that iâd rather be pretentious than pretend iâm dumb just to fit in with those who are. you knock me square in the jaw with your trusty right hook and i land harder than you expected. youâre not even concerned, and why would you be? youâre three sheets to the wind and screaming things like you think i wanted things to end up this way? you gave up first, if you would have just been a real friend to me none of this ever would have happened. youâre crying hysterically now like all good prom nights end, and i am rubbing the sore spot on my face.
i donât fight you though, i know better. instead i just bundle you up and put you to bed like the little trainwreck that you are, and in the morning when the birds chirp and the sun fills this tiny space, you canât remember how you got here or why your head is pounding so hard now. i am sitting up reading a burroughs novel because iâm cultured and mysterious now, with a thermos of coffee already waiting for you. you lean over to puke outside and it lands twenty feet below, and you hate when i tell everyone this story because i always say thatâs the part where i knew i loved you. but itâs true, i had never been more certain of anything in my life than when i saw you hurling out this red river across the yard and thought how nice it was to have you back around, if even for a very delirious moment in a state of great confusion. we get breakfast at a diner we used to fantasize about being old enough to go to without our parents someday, and somehow that manages to be the beginning of the first of many best summers of our lives. now weâre old enough to go all kinds of places without our parents, and itâs still very novel for us to hold hands in public and be out past curfew. somehow we manage to stay these wild eyed teenagers no matter how old we get, and i wouldnât want to grow young with anyone else.
