as usual no thesis statement really but was appreciating brooke’s 3.0 vimh “embrace the traits that make you so odd” line last night & how like, her & jeremy’s relationship kicked off b/c other people guided them into like gunning for Romance & while that was like, fine but obviously doesn’t work out, in the finale they’ve got at least the basis for a real friendship already & all of the development that got them there was while they were engaged in / pursuing this romantic relationship w/each other, lovers to friends, & really like, Concurrent &/or overlapping friendship / romance development, which applies to jeremy & christine’s relationship too, & sure Can be applied to say, jeremy & michael’s, or most anyone else’s, b/c i just end up generally appreciating how for bmc what’s important is that people manage to connect w/each other &/or have these genuine relationships / dynamics wherein they get to be their actual selves with each other, & whether any of these connections are romantic or not is basically beside the point
like how jeremy’s side of his relationship w/christine was resolved at the climax of the the play scene, & in vimh he’s already doing great for having gotten this resolution w/his dad & w/ michael (& also rich (cue the entirely reasonable theory that christine thinks rich is on the list of cast members jeremy’s been pucking his way through when what she’s observed is their having apparently become overnight besties)) & he’s obviously not happy about thinking christine probably just hates him now / doesn’t want to talk again but is still fine with the whole situation; & while we the audience would still need to at least indirectly hear from christine again b/c her arc had hardly resolved during the play there, they both could’ve already learned what they needed to from their relationship over the course of the show & been Fine even if she really hadn’t wanted to talk or anything, & the fact that she does still Like jeremy after all that (& all the more for the Understanding & Context she got re: where he’s been coming from w/all this & how he really feels about her, i.e. he does like her for who she’s always actually been, rather than this Supposedly Ideal version of her which isn’t just the squip thinking it’s ideal but like, it’s related to her own feelings that maybe her best self Is perfectly playing a role on center stage. & also that he doesn’t want her bound to this like a.i. neural network anyways regardless of how he feels about the version of her it presents lol, very nice to know too) & well anyways what i’m getting at is it’s like an epic coda that they do both wanna kiss & get to after all of that simultaneous / overlapping friendship & romance development between them, & it’s like, no they Don’t have to get together like that to be okay, but it is always Incorrect when, say, people wanna write fic that’s technically canon compliant but also Doesn’t have the two of them dating so there’s w/e excuse given, but then also doesn’t have christine & jeremy have Any significant relationship going forward really, which is like, i guess sure that’s possible lol but if you’re acknowledging that christine def did wanna see & talk to him again then that just really doesn’t make sense b/c it wasn’t that the Resolution of their relationship, & all that mattered therein, was simply that they’re specifically dating.....there’s no hard & unyielding “their relationship IS romance & romance IS their relationship” so like you can brush the romance offstage if you wanna but hey where’s their friendship going!!!!! like don’t undermine your own analysis of a relationship dynamic if clearing the romantic relationship table for say, jeremy & michael, b/c it’s the same deal of like, you can see how a relationship that didn’t happen to get any clearcut romantic resolution at the end could Still be considered as development for romance, so like, we’re on the same page that a relationship / the development of that relationship that may not be romantic is still significant even if they don’t happen to kiss at the end of what we see, then if you go “what if [jeremy & christine kissing] is no longer currently relevant” it’s like okay, that significant relationship is still there though
anyways it’s fun how jeremy & brooke are trying to romance each other b/c these figures who tell them how to supposedly play by the social rules to their best advantage are telling them they should, but even if they're down to kiss both of them are looking to relate to each other beyond any squip or squip equivalent kind of “he was a boy she was a girl who wants to make out with you, so don’t stop to talk about Why she likes you or anything & then genuinely relate to each other in a more specific way by doing so” like, thinking of how brooke already Relates to jeremy not b/c she specifically hates madeline so much as b/c of his having supposedly also been cheated on before. & also to just be nice to each other vs whatever else they supposedly “”should”” do....& so even if they’re not together romantically they’ve still made these genuine connections & like each other, & that after all that, brooke liked the ways in which jeremy was weird
maybe a sidebar re: how we don’t really know if jake & christine ended up particularly being friends, even though they supposedly had this equivalent sort of “this is me choosing to be Different from how i usually am / have a different role” & you know, inherently better that nobody’s telling them this is what they Should do, but it also never really seems to go beyond “well, this is just Different for the both of us” so doesn’t seem like there’s too much to be friends about, although also i’m sure they could be in a way similar to brooke & jeremy & you know, we just don’t glimpse it, nice that jake’s at least indirectly rooting for christine’s possible future relationship w/jeremy here lmao
well anyways like i said no thesis statement. just galaxy braining Relationships re: friendship & romance here & how so long as its this genuine connection it’s not really vital whether any given connection involves romance Or Not, i.e. it’s not like well either we’re soulmates or nothing, & also isn’t like “well if i’m girl & you’re boy & we kiss then that’s automatically gonna be the most important thing for either of our lives” lol
#bmc#it's hard to go off about this stuff b/c it's so impossible to use the word ''romance'' & be specific abt what i mean lol#it's like a figure of speech basically....#but i am like nth dimension universe brain about the topic obvi. comes with the territory

Hi Room, What do you think about the finale? Any theorys about why Katarina did that to Red? And what do you think about the Stranger? Thanks!
To me, the finale in general felt okay, which is strangely comforting bc it wasn’t bad. I’m good with an “okay”. “okay” is an improvement (like I still feel TBL is trying while – to use a concurrent example – GOT gave up on itself and its fans spectacularly). There are individual moments that are more than okay to me (DEMBE, the team work, esp Liz & Red, esp esp Liz taking charge and that tiny moment of synchronized tea drinking) and others are less than (e.g. the conclusion to the conspiracy plot is kinda… ?!), but overall I like how S6 played out and my excitement for (lucky number) 7 is intact. Things are in motion and interesting again, and I finally gave myself permission to do a proper, full-scale re-watch during the summer, maybe attempt to chart the timeline, too, which is sth I never expected to consider doing again. I’m even gonna read the comics. In short, this season pulled me back in the Zone.
the rest is behind a cut due to length – @ mobile app users, apologies as always
Red’s identity, Dom’s story, and Liz’s side of these things
The Stranger: Masha was bound to figure out you aren’t who you say you are. What I can’t figure out is Dom. Why would he tell her all that?Red: In an attempt to help her move on.The Stranger: And she believed him?Red: She did. So much so that she‘s decided it’s safe to bring her daughter home. The Stranger: I know Dom meant well. He shouldn’t have told her that story.
So… having seen this scene, I def have more doubts than before, anon, but I still believe that the gist of the Rassvet story (including Red == Ilya) is true. This is (imo) why Red tells Dom “I know the broad strokes, I know who I am, but I need to hear the details you used to sugarcoat the ugly truth to make it look like a fairytale”, i.e. something that Liz has a tendency to swallow (see changed man!Tim or every paternity test they show her), something she was eager to embrace here, too, despite the obvious holes bc – as she told Ressler – “it is sweet and safe, so I’m gonna overlook things that don’t add up and hope it doesn’t come crashing down on me this time”. But it does. Every time.
Whether we like it or not, this is a consistent trait in Liz, this willingness to settle for a sweet, simple story over the messy, complicated truth even when she has misgivings (see her going at Red in 219, “It wouldn’t kill you to lie just once to make someone feel good.”). She’s not stupid, she’s just scared and unsure, imo (and so is Red but, unfortunately for Liz, being pathologically secretive is still what soothes him). But when there is no sweet story available to make Liz feel good/safe or it’s no longer sustainable, that’s when she grows restless/angry and goes on the offensive until she feels safe again. She did this w/ Tim and then w/ Red, too (she literally locked both of them up to gain control), and both times we can eventually hear her say “I was scared of you but not anymore”, and both times she expresses love for a safe & sweet idea and not the full reality of these men who cannot live up to that idea, so the cycle starts up again (well, not w/ Tim as he is now dead but Red is still in the running.)
It doesn’t really matter if the answer she gets is incomplete or untrue. As long as she can make herself swallow it, as long as it brings a sense of security, she will go for it. Tim played along w/ this and that fantasy bubble collapsed every time. Red never did and never will indulge her w/ sweet delusions but by doing so, he also reduces their “feelgood” time together. He hides behind her father’s identity but for her, he breaks cover repeatedly, which to me further signals that he doesn’t wish to take on the roles associated w/ this identity in her life, which clearly clashes w/ her park bench claim of “this is who you will always be to me”. And given Liz’s track record w/ these self-soothing declarations, I think we will once again see her being contradicted.
Having heard of what’s happened btw her and Red, I think Dom decided to tailor the truth to give them a quick-fix. His story brought a sense of safety/certainty that Liz craves – sth Red refused to offer when he told her he had a secret and he had to keep it and refused to give her any embellished feel-good alternative. But now he is on edge bc some of his secrets have been spilled and it was done in a way that maximizes his discomfort (by making him look like a hero when he considers himself anything but, and, ultimately, by undermining his control over his own “narrative” around Liz). I believe this is part of the reason why he tells Dom that he likely made everything worse by telling her that story.
I hope next season they will be pushed to face more of the actual truth together – in all its ugly, messy glory – about what exactly happened and, more importantly, why. Because we still don’t know much of that. Dom only offered a taste but now Katarina is back to mix some sour to the sweet (I am hungry as I am typing this, can you tell ;)
The Stranger: well, we barely have anything to go on here but what we have is already intriguing, i.e. he grew up w/ Red, he seems to know Dom and Katarina personally, he seems to have some serious tradecraft background + connections, and he is among the v few who is trusted w/ Red’s secrets, so he is inner inner circle for sure (and he’s played by Brett Cullen, so… yes please). I still think the childhood pledge from the Rassvet story is an element of truth (it just fits our Red way too much + I see it reflected in “Cape May”), so I think these 3 (the Stranger, Red, and Kat) were likely childhood friends and they all picked similar career paths (or it was picked for them), so the Stranger is likely Russian, too.
Katarina continues to puzzle me to no end, I freely admit. And I am enjoying it (for now anyway). The finale offered some really interesting details here, imo, and I think Red’s 2nd meeting w/ the Stranger is the most revealing.
Red tasked his mysterious friend to locate Katarina bc Ressler’s dig for his real identity triggered an active search for her, too. The Stranger finds her and hands Red a picture saying, “It’s her. I’m telling you, Raymond. Paper trails. The passports. The travel. It’s her.” What we can immediately conclude here is that they didn’t even know what Kat looks like now since it’s not the picture the Stranger used to identify her but her signature methods/movements (knowledge of this implies a close working relationship in the past at the v least). And since he doesn’t hand Red the pic to ask him to confirm it’s her but to show him what she looks like now, we can also conclude that Red had no idea what she looks like now, either, which means that he hasn’t seen her for almost 3 decades and, apparently, he would have been fine w/ maintaining this arrangement if it hadn’t been for the security risk Ressler’s digging exposed them to.
This conclusion lines up nicely w/ two (imo very important) things established in previous episodes:
Red’s hallucinations at Cape May – he sees Kat the way she looked in 1991/92. His mind couldn’t conjure her present image bc his last memories of her are almost 30 years old. This in turn implies that the Hobson’s choice event took place around this time, as well, and that was the last time he saw her. It was the last time Dom saw her, too, if what he tells Liz in “Rassvet” – that it was 28 years ago – is true.
Katarina being dead – whatever happened to Kat, her own father considers her as good as dead now. So does Red and Dom blames him for this loss, going as far as saying he killed her.
Dom: These boxes are all I have left of my daughter.
Red: If Katarina were standing here instead of me, if it were she asking you, what would you tell her?Dom: It doesn’t matter because she is not here and she’s not asking.Red: But if you could tell her–Dom: I can’t!
Dom (to Liz): If my Katarina was still here, she would have let me know. [… her mother sent a letter hoping it] would find her alive. I picked it up because I knew it never would.”
Liz: You said the name Masha Rostova had been lost to history until the manhunt. Now it’s out there and someone’s looking for me. It’s my mother.Red: Lizzie, your mother is dead.
Her mother was dying, Kat never showed. Her daughter was being hunted and it was televised globally – Kat never showed. And clearly neither Dom nor Red expected her to as they both seem to consider Katarina dead despite being aware that she is still out there somewhere. Moreover, they both believe that Liz is better off thinking her mother is dead than knowing whatever the truth is (so it cannot be too good). Add to this Red’s latest remark to Liz – “your mother can’t hurt you” – and things truly get weird and interesting. Was Kat subjected to some special session w/ Krilov, too, that somehow “extinguished” parts of her, practically rendering her old self “gone”? This would be my current best guess (just a shot in the dark, really) and I know it’s crude sci-fi territory but this is TBL we’re talking about.
Whatever happened to Kat, Red was involved in it, and we have several remarks to back this up:
“All the money, all the time and effort, all the favors in the world cannot possibly equal what you took away from her.” (Red, 216)
“There was a woman and her child. Both were doomed. Both would die. I could either save one or lose both. I chose the child. It was the worst thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.” (Red, 319)
“I’m not sure Elizabeth will ever be ready to learn what you did to Katarina.” (Dembe, 422)
“[Katarina] is gone because of choices you made.” (Dom, 320)
In “Cape May”, Red hallucinated forgiveness/absolution from Katarina but we don’t know if this is how she actually felt. It could have been just Red trying to make himself feel better about doing what he felt to be necessary. Katarina in the present doesn’t seem to be in a forgiving mood, tho. She clearly expected to be contacted and she clearly considered Red’s presence a threat.
Red: If Moscow is looking for Katarina, if Agent Ressler’s inquiry has reignited their search…The Stranger: Then I know that could be bad.Red: I want this done before Masha’s daughter comes home.
So… your guess is as good as mine here, anon. All we have for now is a whole lot of vaguing and very little concrete info. I agree, it feels there’s sth more to this but there’s just so little to go on, it could be almost anything. What we can conclude is that the Stranger and Red (and Dom) have stayed away from Katarina for almost 30 years and if it hadn’t been for Moscow’s freshly reignited interest in finding her, this complete lack of contact would have remained. They didn’t even keep direct tabs on her since they had no idea what she looked like or where exactly she was or that she was a threat to Red (otherwise he would have approached her differently, imo).
They clearly do not want Kat to be found – the precise “why” remains to be seen. Red’s first words to her are a warning – “it’s not safe” –, and I think he truly went there to make sure she wouldn’t be scooped up. That was his immediate objective. If she were found, the consequences would reach Liz and Agnes, and heading that threat off is what ultimately motivates Red here (→ “I want this done before Masha’s daughter comes home.”). He didn’t look too enthusiastic to make contact. He didn’t want to, he had to. And he didn’t tell Liz, which suggests that he wants this separation to remain, which suggests that something is up w/ Katarina that goes beyond the usual “you can’t be in her life bc it’s dangerous” reason. Dom stayed out of Liz’s life, too, for safety reasons yet Red told him to find Liz if anything happened to him. That doesn’t seem to be the case w/ Kat at all. Red himself stayed away from her yet he went to find Dom after Liz “death” and returned several times after that for advice or simply for his company.
The meeting w/ Kat wasn’t a social call and it did not feel like a romantic reunion, either. Red just looked sad and tense to me. And he clearly did not expect to be stabbed, so I don’t think that bit was part of any planned performance. Why he received that treatment is another good question. Kat has clearly come into the possession of some new info that compelled her to go on the offensive. It could be related to their past and that vague remark about what Red did to her OR it is about something more recent that Red wasn’t aware she was aware of?? Right now this moment feels like a convergence of two separate threads: Red came to warn her based on “undisclosed plot point A” and Katarina reacted to him based on “undisclosed plot point B”.
Oh, I love this song, anon. Antis can keep pointing at that awkward kiss (that he doesn’t even initiate, she keeps pushing her face into his) as evidence of some ~epic romance~ all they want, but once again they fail (and/or refuse) to see things in context and “Cape May” was already pretty clear wrt Red’s feelings, I agree. and the finale lines up w/ it, too, which is nice.
Red hasn’t seen her in 30 years yet he only decided to contact Kat bc her looming exposure threatened Liz and Agnes, and when he is shown a picture of her, this is his reaction:
Not exactly what I’d expect from a dude in love (even if it were unrequited). He had a way more emotional reaction to Dembe’s return and he only left like a week ago. This is more like how you react when someone shows you photographic evidence of Bigfoot chilling in their hot tub w/ a beer. And now we know Red knew all along that Katarina was alive, so him “designating” Liz as the woman he loves and confessing (several times both to her and others) that without her he has nothing to live for and saying her name as his last word speak volumes already. So if they wanted to sell Red/Kat, they have already undercut themselves on multiple fronts here by giving literally all the romance tropes to Red/Liz. But I don’t believe they are selling R/K, it’s just another smoke screen + Kat is part of a past both Red and Liz have to settle for the sake of their future. And settling the past is always easier and more fruitful to do w/ a living human than w/ a ghost or a hallucination.
Yeah, I think it’s there to signal that they (Dom and Kat included) go way back and were/are close, like you said. and to indicate shared Russian roots, perhaps. As I said above, I still think Red is Ilya and the Stranger is likely Russian, too, (and so is Dom), so using Liz’s original Russian name makes sense in this context of “Russian togetherness”.
and Red sometimes calls her Masha around Dom, too, bc that’s what Dom calls her bc that’s who she still is to Dom. And I think that’s why Red calls her Elizabeth bc that’s who she is to him, which is a nice little detail further emphasizing that his main/defining connection to her is the present one just as James keeps saying. Or as Red puts it on-screen
I can def see both sides here, anon, and more. Knowing what we know about Red, both are likely among the multiple reasons that underpin his behavior in this scene. Yes, on the one hand, he was pressed for time and wanted that Kat thing done as soon as possible. On the other, he was also kinda closed-off as if he were trying to hold back emotionally as well as physically, which I think flows from 2 main sources: 1) he feels uncomfortable w/ the labels Liz wants to push on him (ever since the pilot he’s been displaying a preference for “partner” and not “father” and he might be reaching his saturation point) and 2) he is still heartbroken and afraid to put himself out there again w/ Liz after three major betrayals in a row. He’s already had a sort of baseline distress due to how emotionally vulnerable he is to Liz at all times, so after this latest heartbreak I think he is just trying to take things slow, leaving space and time for Liz and himself to figure out a mutually acceptable way to fit together.
She’s been using his heart as a knife block to satisfy her own needs and I think it’s making him less and less willing to force himself into slots that feel uncomfortable to him. She just decided that him playing dad and grandad is what suits him but a week ago she thought life in prison suited him the best. I mean… that’s not how you relationship. At all. Relationships are ongoing negotiations where all involved need to consent to their “roles”. It’s not “I hate you now, so I will put you in prison” and then “I love you now, so stay for dinner”. After everything that’s happened, I am not surprised Red is pushing back a little here for the sake of (what’s left of) his own sanity. He is a deeply flawed, problematique human being but he is still a human being and not a toy.
Liz and Agnes are the most important to him and he would never ever force his preferences on them, I completely agree. But that doesn’t mean Liz should be allowed to force her preferences on him esp when those change so often and so drastically bc she clearly doesn’t know what she really wants from him yet. I think this realization is finally truly dawning on this guilt-ridden, lovesick idiot and that’s part of what we see in this scene, esp in that “I don’t wanna intrude” comment that really does feel like a pointed retreat from her abrupt park bench declaration. But of course there is no negotiation w/o talking and that’s what Liz wanted to do before Red shut her down, so…
bottom line (that’s been the same for 6 years): these 2 need to talk.

im not happy abt that ending
this is just a vent post so sorry if it accidentally ends up in the tags for a certain character & ship that im trying to censor out
if you liked the ending hey good for you have fun with that im glad you did. there are a lot of things i genuinely enjoyed about endgame but i just wanted to write out my negative feelings about that ending bc while the way thors character was treated genuinely made me upset this is what i feel most comfortable talking about on my blog
beware: endgame spoilers!!!
i wanna start by saying i actually love p*ggy c*rter so much & i like st*ggy in some circumstances but rn the ship upsets me bc it just reminds me of that ending. like i feel kinda similar to before aou where i genuinely liked br*cen4t until the movie cam out, then i hated the ship, but im back to liking it in some circumstances but def ignoring canon decisions bc they were Not Good. i know i probably will end up being ok with st*ggy again but for now its in my serious NOTP area bc just thinking about it makes me upset
ok so im not happy with steve going back to live his life with p*ggy it feels so wrong esp since hes erasing the life she had after she had very much moved on. it feels like she has no agency in whether or not she gets to decide her future bc it seems like steve decides for her & therefore decides for her whole family. whole people have now never been born & honestly it makes the st*ron kiss in cacw so much worse bc steve has now made out with his own niece. like we dont see him truly grieving for the friends he lost in iw but for some reason hes super hung up on p*ggy now.
it also gives two potential alternatives to steves character, neither of which im a fan of tbh:
he does very little to change the past to ensure the future. i am not a fan of this bc it means that steve rogers sat idly by while hydra was growing inside of shield & while bucky was being actively tortured let alone having him try to stop other issues. it feels like a giant “fuck you” to the same guy who says “if i see a situation pointed south i cant ignore it” & “i dont like bullies. i dont care where theyre from.” that steve rogers could NEVER sit idly by while all that shit is going down. in cacw, we see bucky actively struggling with his self worth & he tells steve that “[he doesnt know if he’s] worth all this”, whether it be steves time, his care, whatever & then steve goes & proves him right by leaving him. even though ill admit im more of a stucky shipper, it doesnt matter how you see steve & buckys relationship, if he even slightly cared about bucky & even just looking at the fact that if this is the true path then he actively chose to do nothing with regards to his torture. im sorry but if this is who the writers claim he is then he should not be worthy of mjolnir or even p*ggy’s love bc that would say a whole lot about his character & i truly dont believe she could love a man who would do that to supposedly his best friend. this would not be steve rogers.
he actively changes things in accordance to what we know his character to be. he saves bucky, stops hydra, who knows what else, certainly not us. this means that even through all those changes the timeline would branch so little that it would let him come back to that timeline, which means that hydra are the most pathetic villain organization to exist because for everything hydra tried to do there was so little impact on the world. this undermines hydras use narratively as villains and also devalues buckys suffering and p*ggy’s achievements in the original timeline. it basically means that these powerful & important characters & everything they do is pretty much meaningless & has no impact or value. fuck that too.
honestly i have no conclusion for this post im just pretty unhappy with this characterization. honestly aside from the implications of the st*ggy relationship in the movie i loved steves character. ill admit i mostly had a lot of fun. maybe another day ill post about what bothers me about thors character but tbh thats really super personal for me & not just me being upset about canon so idk

Lmao @/anon specifying the hot version, I get where they’re coming from but I personally like Hawks having mommy issues be more relevant than whatever we were cooking up with Takami, the daddy issues are allll Touya, narrative foils! Also Hawks just strikes me as that kinda guy (and I want more connection with him) and also a bit of how Takami being a victim of hero society was just used in 2019 fandom to blame Hawks as a bad person. It would’ve been so annoying to read those metas about his dad + at least with his mom, well. We don’t have anybody justifying her, we just get she’s a complicated person with issues. There’s nobody blaming Hawks for anything to do with his mom either, so sweet relief there’s at least one less point of discourse for him, even if it’s the part of his story I care about the least. Also quick point towards how that story point is often compared to Twice which was def part of the blame fuel back then, and I like the differentiation of his story with others. We have yet to have anyone grow up in abject poverty with villainous parents off the map wtf- (sorry I kinda go feral over that shack, it's like a social worker's nightmare house to visit except it's not even a registered house) and have to save himself through waiting and high education and still be left without a family which is painful af, having to cut off your parents, that chase to escape through hard work, but so real to many people irl, it’s a diff depiction to Tenko’s and Touya’s, which are solidly their own family dynamics but also very real ones. Because that's what bnha does, it tries to explore every single possible one and reaction to them. No two characters really have the same story. Rei's relationship with her parents is not the same as Nao and her parents moving in with Tenko's dad, Toga's family and their thing with appearances and social status is not the same as Touya's relationship with Endeavor and EnjiRei's perception of it @their kids. Gentle Criminal and La Brava are different versions of Deku and Kirishima, but it's not the same story at all.
Yeah, I agree with you about exploring Hawks having mom issues over him having dad issues (to put it extremely lightly). Especially as Hori tends to explore problematic fathers over mothers and even with Hawks mother, much like over mothers in the series with abusive parents, she was more of an enabler.
That's not to undermine the role and the effect having an enabling parent can be as I think that's just as important to explore when discussing a victims mental state because the impact that can have (something I definitely think is underexplored in general). However Hawks mother, unlike Shigaraki's mother and Rei, was distinctly different in that she wasn't so much of a victim of Takami. We can't claim he never attacked her too because we know so little about their relationship but he definitely treated her different than he treated his son.
I do also understand where the last anon was coming from too as I think Hori should have had a lot more references to how hero society created villains in the story and he could have used Hawks father as an example of that too. I don't think they suggested it in order to defend his father either, just as a way to explore that narrative, especially as it leads to Hawks being picked up by the same people that drove his father to that point and raising him in order to be their hero puppet. But I do agree if Hori had done so, the fandom would have jumped on it to excuse Takami and throw Hawks under the bus T-T
However you also make a great point about how unique Hawks past is compared to other heroes in the series. He's one of the few who grew up in extreme poverty, with an abusive family with one being a known, if petty, villain. I don't think Takami's reasons for being a villain are all that important in the long run because he's a narrative device to explain Hawks situation.
Sorry, this reply is just me going back and forth like "I agree but I also agree with the other person" shows you how sometimes there is no correct answer XD It's just based on personal wants!

Shizuma general headcanons
Reposting this from my main blog @caxceberxvi
ok so here are some of the head canons ive been working on for shizuma. im def going to do all of the stripe squad and im probably going to update this after next weeks ep if we see what happens to them
very much dating buntan. Their fav activity is (besides being sassmasters) is watching fireworks and the fountain displays in the old parts of Kiri
however theyre both pretty loved starved and have no idea how to have a real relationship so it eventually peters out to them just being cuddle friends
its pretty cold and wet in kiri so getting good tea and coffee is hard. His favourite brand actually comes from Suna but hes loath to admit it because FORIGN GOODS
those little gills on the side of his face didn’t appare until puberty but now they pop in constanly. When he gets happy they wiggle, when he gets sad or crys sometimes they dribble like a runny nose and sometimes when he sneezes they pop in suddenly and scare the hell out of everyone because sneeze is suddenly X12 LOUDER.
His favorite food is Unagi (barbeque grilled river-eel) which is hard to get in the salty ocean surrounded land of water .
He tells people he likes fugu because he likes to live dangerously but secretly he’d rather have Takoyaki from that one little place on the pier.
He really doesn’t eat red meat since its really hard to rear in kiri and really expencive . however if someone offered it to him he’d probably eat it
However if you offer him gobo( burdock root) or Nasu ( egg plant) he will throw them at you in disgust
Fun fact about Hoshigakis is that some of them are more like sharks than others. Some of them suffer from Tonic immobility . so for example If someone were to boop shizuma on the nose he’d be stuck until they decided to move.
This is his most closely guarded secret ( it is also very cute and im defiantly going to draw it)
Heres the nice ones
but i really love to torture shark-child so there are some nastys below the cut
angst warning!
@temari-i-i as promised =)
100% confirmed cuddle monster who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “ personal space. He also has the rest of the stripe squad as bad as he is.
Not a morning person tbh. Cant function before 10am and needs at least 2 cups of coffee to get going.
The reason he was on Penance during the fiend trip arc was because he messed up an important peace building mission to Iwa. He pretended it was an accident but no one was buying it.
After the field trip arc he was demoted back to Genin.
He says hes 18 during the field trip arc but hes actually a few months shy of 18 . hes just tryna act older since hes the youngest of the stripe squad .
The Hoshigaki clan is actually Matriarchal, as with sharks irl. Female hoshigaki are stronger and have more chakra on average. The more women of high ninja rank in the family the more say they have
There are a lot of twins and triplets in the hoshigaki Clan as sharks tend to have multiple bbys
Shizumas parents struggled to have children and when they did it was just one boy, shizuma. Because of this shizumas family hold little sway over the decisions of the clan which his parents are a little bit bitter about
Speaking of his family they are kind of jerks. His mom is fairly important, she does love shizuma but since hes not a girl she doesn’t really pay him any heed because whats the point???
she would be the first to voice her annoyance if he did anything less than perfect on a mission or exam because how dare you son of mine????
His dad on the other hand is an abusive asshole. He constantly undermines shizuma for even the smallest failure and constantly telling him he needs to change and be better but fails to acknowledge shizuma when he succeeds at anything. If shizuma speaks back its likely he’ll be hit or punished in someway
Because of this He was genuinely hurt by Kaguras suggestion that he could change as the whole reason behind his attempted coup was because his dad told him he needed to change and he did so now hes all confused and which is it??? Change back to a failure in his parents eyes or a traitor to the village???
The only time his dad is even the slightest bit kind is when shizuma asks to hear about how the village used to be during the blood mist days. Shizuma has grown up with tales of the glory days and now obviously idolizes it.
This is one of the main reasons he wants things to go back to how they were in the past
Neither of his parents went to his Chunin exam graduation or his appointment to instructor at the academy .
They were also PISSED after the whole field trip incident . outwardly they support the village or at least the clan does. They turned the air blue yelling at him about disrespecting the village and stealing something as valuable and dangerous as samehada , esp since he didn’t earn it
But behind closed doors they were more angry that shizuma got caught and wasn’t able to wield samehada with any kind of skill.
If shizuma had succeeded they would have chalked it up to a Clan victory rather than shizumas own accomplishments but since he failed its all his problem and hes useless and shameing the clan
After merging with samehada his chakra pathway was damaged meaning he now has trouble performing even the most basic ninjutsu like walking on water(ill go into this more later or in another head canon thing because its 0015 and im tired)
Little bit of a masochist .too young for the NASTY™ but would def be into the whole whips and chains thing ( should this go in a NSFW HC list or something???)
Questionably straight Shark child©
