[ID] Five tweets from a twitter thread by Jules (@ JulianeWriter). The fourth is a reply from Reid Chalker (@ ReidChalker). The thread reads:
Jules: I called 13+ churches in my area asking if they could help a family whose water was about to get shut off and they all said some version of, “No, we don’t do that.” They acted Like I was weird for asking.
Jules: UPDATE-The bill has been paid (not by a church but by very awesome person) and this family is no longer in danger of their water being shut off.
Jules: It never occurred to me that anyone would need to be in a special club in order to deserve help. Like that’s a strange concept. Somebody falls down on the street and you gotta check to make sure they’re on The List before you help them to their feet or something?
Reid: This is why I don’t take anyone seriously who says stuff like “I believe we should have more charities and less social programs.” It’s pretty much always someone who wants the veneer of morality while having the goal of doing absolutely nothing to help.
Jules: Yes, it’s all appearances. [End ID]
#If you're reblogging this for the ID feel free to ignore the following rant:#This is why ''churches'' don't work as physical institutions#So much money spent on building maintenance and shiny new sound and light systems and utility costs etc#that they don't have money to help people in their community#and often won't help members of their own church#and usually it's to the point where they really have no interest in it. as reid says here it's just a ''veneer of morality''#and the entire concept of tithing has church members giving money directly to the church instead of actually helping people as individuals#not to mention the absolutely ridiculous amounts of money spent on (gross‚ imperialist) mission trips#so they can convince themselves they're actually doing something meaningful#and will continue shoveling money into their church funds#until some scandal comes up and the church splits and they move to a new church and repeat the same cycle over and over again#it's awesome!
