Controversial opinion, but I think at least in our modern-day life, it's more progressive to have an unlikable female villain depicted in media. I'm kinda so tired of making and watering down every female villains goals and motivations by slapping on some sob story (that often times comes off as more sexist...yknow your typical "she's like this because she lost her kid or her husband or is infertile" or some other bs) and making her morally grey last minute. Especially when the whole point of the plot was showing how said female villain got to be an irredeemable asshole who would trample everything in her way. You can't suddenly build her up to be a stand-in for...idk the complexities of facism or capitalism, idfk maybe even a stand in for the devil himself. Then strip away a that progress with no build up.
Like a bit of a side note but I partially blame this on a new age of writers as well where while it's good to want a lot of nuance and grey areas to explore with villains it's become the norm to ALWAYS make them sympathetic. The goal from these writers have shifted from " let's make the most perfect fit for a villainous antagonist to oppose our main good guys" and more so "how can we make everyone who watches this love every single character to maximize positive outreach and profit. How can we get it so this piece of media attracts fandom more than it attracts people to a story" if that makes sense.
Writing has taken a sharp turn (especially in animated media) to write with things like shipping and fandom in mind. Like God forbid I want natural character progression and subtle insertion of character tropes that get built on that aren't someone just marketing these 2 character as sunshine x grump. That's what fanfic is for. Because no hate to fanfic (I write it a lot myself and have seen beautiful pieces of work) but it's so weird to see every book or show act like they don't need to build up everything. Like this is a fandom and show we all watched and get the inside jokes of.
But anyways back to my point, I've think we've been losing the unique charm of having fucked villains we come together and hate. Hate so much that you come to love and respect them for the amazing roles they play in their respective stories. And that's partially because of everything I said above. At least personally.
#🍊.txt#i think the thing that pisses me off the most is when the redeeming or sympathetic backstory comes out of the blue#hate that#not saying i want one dimensional villains but im saying instead of being morally grey writers are shifting hard into a grey white category#its boring and overplayed and i need you to stop#hmmm#hazbin hotel critical#helluvaverse critical#i kinda had that show in mind bc god i try to give the woman some leeway but vivziepops writing is so bad#horrendously bad#also kinda....#arcane critical#fandom critical#as well since as consumers we also have a play in this

Unpopular opinion but
Sonya should be aro. There is so much pointing to that.
And many more reasons why i feel johnny cage and her just dont work.
Johnny is a romantic. Sonya is not. And don't want the same things in life.
Sonya is dedicated to her work and is more concerned about helping others.
Johnny is an entertainer and is hardly around either.
There is so many more things pointing out how forced this ship is in canon. And fans dont help.
Im not sayin y'all cant ship it.
But in all honesty. I don't see it working out. Or lasting long.
And it feels like its there just to make cassie and do nothing but add yo that trope of
"Make family and baby for new generation"
Reducing sonyas character to mom instead of her own character. And cassie to a kod in a loveless marriage.
And ther eis a difference between caring about someone.
And being in love with someone.
You can care about someone. But not be in love.
And you can fall oit of love any time.
The problem is these two characters have little to no chemistry, didnt make it work. And sometimes that happens.
But it sucks that these characters have to suffer from poor writing.
Again im not saying that others cant ship it or make it better writing. But looking at their characters and the years n years of lore. It never made any sense to me they even got together other then some stereotypical status quo.
And mk 9- mk11 no offense is so one dimensional. Mostly the good guys.
The villains. Are absolutely perfect. But why is it that the bad guys and morally grey get amazing writing. But good guys. Lack in that department?
I just feel johnny and sonya work better as friends. And i feel sonya needs friends and platonic relationships and not romantic relationships. She doesn't need to be married or have kids to be an amazing kick ass character. She doesn't need to do that to even have character development. Character development of women characters shouldn't have to be hanged on their ability to have children or lack there of or have to be married to have a fulfilling relationship. Romantic or not.
Same goes with johnny. Same goes with male characters. They dont need any of this to have character development. Character development isn't being married having kids and stupid drama like that. Its overcoming internal struggles and personal problems. BY THEMSELVES,WITHOUT THE AID OF OTHERS (nessicarly. Maybe they can encourage them but not walk that path for them. Plus im tired of characters having to rely on others to overcome THEIR personal struggles. Its different if its a worldly problem. But a personal journey should stay a personal journey.)
Anyways. This is just a personal vent.
Again y'all dont have to feel the same. But this is just from my observation. And my personal gripes with these tropes.
