Nezu doesn’t often leave UA’s grounds these days and even more rarely does he venture out unaccompanied in some way.  He has made it a habit of sorts to stay on the campus as much as possible ever since he solidified his hold on the school almost a decade ago.

It’s a move that is he admits, even if only to himself, fueled by equal parts pragmatism and paranoia.

After all UA has most of everything he needs within it already including a set of private apartments scaled just perfectly to his size and tastes despite what impression the large, human suited desk in his public office tends to give any visitors to his domain.  Why should he worry about venturing out into the city when anything the campus might not be able to provide for him can easily be procured by his minions dear employees or through delivery via secured drone?

And the fewer trips he makes off campus means the fewer opportunities there are for those who are still displeased with something someone such as himself holding such a position of power over such a prestigious hero school to take action.  He, of course, has all faith in his ability to protect himself from whatever ham-fisted assassin might come his way but Nezu is, above almost all else, pragmatic.

The fewer bodies left in his wake the smoother his daily life tends to run.

It had, after all, been such a pain to get the records from his time at the tender mercies of his human captors completely sealed and the quietly buried.

The humans involved in the case had finally agreed though and in the years since they did so like to tout how the illustrious UA Principle had been “rescued” from the laboratories.

Few remained who remembered what the heroes who’d raided that hellish place had actually found when they’d arrived.

Those unlucky few who did remember had long since been silenced by hook or by crook.  That had been one of the first things Nezu had done when he’d finally managed to accumulated enough power that his subtle threats and sharp toothed promises had finally come to hold real meaning on more than one level.

When he’d finally managed to bite and claw himself into a position of power that showed him as the threat he always had been for those who might dare cross him.

That had been the very first secret he’d ensured would be kept as it was one that posed the biggest threat to his reputations in a number of circles.

Nezu’s intellect wasn’t his only weapon after all, only his most dangerous. Though his teeth and claws could work in a pinch if the situation called for it.  And when they’d tried to take his eye it had certainly called for it.

A self professed level of resentment and sadism could be excused by most of humanity for someone of Nezu’s circumstances.

But a body count?  Well. That’s when humans tended to get ... tetchy. 

So while Nezu does, of course, have a residence of his own off campus for paperwork purposes and as a secondary fall back location, UA’s campus has been his unofficial residence for some number of years now.  And it will be his official one as well as soon as he manages to finally get the dorm system he’s been aching to implement passed through.

They will have to pry that school, his school, and what he’s attempting to build there from his cold, dead paws and whatever other insurance policies he manages to put into action between now and his inevitable death. Which will, of course, be some time in the far far future if he has anything to say or do about it.  And he will.

All of that aside there are times when leaving the campus is unavoidable, this being one of them.  An unfortunate scheduling conflict and a private meeting that absolutely had to be conducted in person had left him where he is now, strolling down the sidewalks of Musutafu and quietly lamenting how very oversized so many things were.

It truly was a pity that more accommodations had not been made for those whose quirks and circumstances of birth left them on the smaller side instead of on the larger scale.  But progress could be rather unfortunately slow and so it was just one more issue Nezu hoped to begin subtly influencing in the coming years.

He’s just turning a corner, intent on visiting a nearby cafe with an excellent tea selection before he returns to UA (one must have their indulgences and a good brew and a finely crafted cigarette have long been amongst Nezu’s chosen pleasures), when he hears it.

“Get back here and get what you deserve, Deku,” a voice, rough and young but edged with a viciousness that makes the backs of Nezu’s teeth itch, practically howls.

Nezu, attention instantly captured, pauses just long enough to avoid being mowed down by the child who comes tearing around the corner.

For a split second their eyes meet, a blazing green gaze Nezu can’t help but admire just a bit locking with his own, as the boy sees him and swerves to avoid running into Nezu in his obviously frantic escape.

Nezu hops backwards a half step just as the boy loses his footing and crashing painfully to the side walk beside him.

“A-Are you o-okay?” the boy half stutters, half pants as he looks up at him, eyes wide and seemingly uncaring of the blood Nezu can already smell on his scraped palms and likely ripped kneecaps.

“Are you?” Nezu asks back evenly, eyes tracking over the boy and instantly compiling details and facts as he takes in the tattered school uniform, the pale face, the singed backpack and the bruises he can see just peeking out from beneath unseasonal long sleeves.

Everything about the boy screams battered to Nezu’s sense.

And then he looks down at his feet and sees his shoes.

His distinctive red shoes at that, vibrant in color and thick soled, subtly different in make and construction than most ordinary shoes seen these days, much like the footwear Nezu himself wears even now.

Which means that this boy either has a quirk that affects his feet or ...

“Thought you were going to get away didn’t you, you Quirkless fuck?” A small group of boys rounds the corner then, ignoring Nezu entirely and focusing on the boy who abruptly goes even paler somehow.  “Just cause sensei couldn’t prove you cheated doesn’t mean we’re gonna let you get away with it.”

Ah, Nezu thinks even as he presses the urge to snarl down and away, option two then.

The green boy, because Nezu will not be calling him Deku even in his own mind, scrambled up onto his feet then.  But, surprisingly enough, he doesn’t turn to run.

Instead he edges forward just a bit, sliding a shoulder and a foot forward until he’s standing almost protectively in front of Nezu himself.

“K-Kacchan,” the green one stutters, “I-I didn’t cheat I s-swear!  I wouldn’t d-do that.”

“Tsk,” the blond leader, Kacchan, tisks then, a snarl thick and heavy on his young face.  At his sides his hands flex in a move Nezu knows must be related to his quirk.  “Bullshit.  No way you’d get top of the class in anything without cheating, you worm.”

Nezu has known this child for roughly 6 seconds and he finds that he does not care for him at all.  But then he’s never been overly fond of most of humanity either so perhaps that’s to be expected.

“H-Heroes don’t cheat,” Green insists, the naïve if well meant words sounding like a declaration.  “If I’m g-going to be a hero then I c-can’t either.”

That explanation only seems to enrage Kacchan even further if the way his hands begin to pop and crackle is anything to go by.

This, Nezu knows as the scent of burnt caramel begins to fill the air around them, is going to escalate quickly.

“Public quirk usage is ~illegal~,” Nezu singsongs as he steps around the green boy and plants himself firmly in front of him instead, abruptly drawing the blond boy and his followers attention toward him.  One paw slips into his vest pocket to remove the specially designed cell phone he’s never without.  “I would hate to be forced to report this to the proper authorities.”

Never mind that, technically, he is the proper authorities.

The blond glares at him for a long moment before he huffs.

“This isn’t over Deku,” he snarls.  “I’ll see you in class tomorrow.”

It’s an obvious threat but the boy turns on his heel, shoves his way through his friends, and stalks off back around the corner in the direction he came.

So Nezu lets it go.  For now.

“Now that that has been handled for the moment, young man,” Nezu turns towards the green boy beside him with all of the showmanship that’s come to define his patented introduction, “let me introduce myself! Am I a dog, a rat, or a bear? Either way I am Nezu th-”

“Y-You’re the Intel Hero Nezu,” the green boy says brightly, cutting Nezu’s introduction off even as he rubs raw and bloody palms against his black slacks and starts to dig through his backpack, “You solved the H-Hanamura kidnapping and the Inugami murders! You’re one of my favorite heroes!”

Nezu can’t help the way he stalls out just a bit at that because ... well he’s never been anyone’s favorite anything.  Their nightmare yes but not their favorite.  Especially not a child.  Children around this age normally tend to have more simplistic reactions to him.  And most of them don’t know about the string of rather gruesome ritualistic homicides he’d solved or the high profile kidnapping cases he consults on in his down time.

“C-Can you please sign my notebook?” the boy says then, head bowed low and a notebook and pen held out in Nezu’s direction.

Nezu admits to being slightly intrigued when he sees the way the cover is labeled Hero Analysis For The Future Vol 8.

That intrigue only grows when he opens it and his attention is immediately captured by the rather impressively done sketch of Pro Hero Starstreak that he finds there.

Unable to help himself Nezu reads over the page quickly and then keeps going.

Well now, Nezu can’t help but think just a bit gleefully as he sees the absolutely unbelieve level of analysis this young, quirkless boy has compiled, isn’t this interesting.

So essentially once something is released publicly it becomes public domain simply because it can't be avoided correct? The modern internet culture of remixing and transformation of well everything simply makes it impossible to avoid. Does a artist not have a right to be upset and stop others from doing things with their original creations they don't approve of? If someone drew team RWBY with Nazi outfits should RT have the right to stop that person?

Yeah, ultimately public domain has to include things that one individual might not approve of because, as is abundantly obvious, approval varies widely and once you have a narrow group (let alone one person) deciding what is and is not okay is when you get censorship. The caveat to that is that some things should be censored. Promoting Nazism isn’t a copyright issue (I, the creator, personally don’t want Team RWBY in these outfits), it should be a human rights issue (We, as the human race, do not approve of anyone wearing that uniform). Something like white supremacy is not something I’m willing to give any ground to, even in fiction. 

Porn is much more wibbly and much more wobbily. No, I don’t think RT should be allowed to legally prevent all NSFW content because then you get precisely what we saw when tumblr attempted it: immediate and justified backlash. The category of “Porn” isn’t in any way comparable to the category of “Nazi” because the  latter has absolutely nothing redeeming about it while the former has plenty. Putting a blanket ban on “Nazi” (outside obvious things like non-fiction and historical fiction) benefits everyone. Putting a blanket ban on “Porn” might help fight against stuff I personally think we should be pushing against (like pedophilia)… but it would also censor queer identities, healthy sexual expression, experimentation, etc. The benefits don’t outweigh the many, many things we’d lose in the process. 

I always come back to the balance of “You have the right to create what you want, but I have an equal right to respond to it.” So yes, “too bad” applies to my own stuff as well. I’ve put it out there. I know very well people will interact with it in a variety of ways. I’ve even encouraged interaction I already approve of (like certain fics based off my fics.) However, there is a very real possibility that someone might transform something I’ve written into a new piece I disagree with and the strength of that disagreement will dictate my response. You take a fic of mine and write a connected one shot with a pairing I don’t like and themes I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole? I’m not thrilled, but I went in knowing this was a possibility. Creative freedom comes with some downsides and though I may ask the author not to do that, to take it down, etc. if they don’t... that’s their right. I’m not happy, but I accept it. However, you take a fic of mine and write a connected one shot with something as heinous as making Team RWBY into Nazis? Then yes, I’ll fight back against that with everything I’ve got and I certainly hope the rest of the community would too. As you say, we often shun specific works and for good reason. It’s the difference between a specific response (this community isn’t going to allow this one story here) and a systematic response (laws and regulations in place to ensure that no one can write anything related to this topic, regardless of the context). We want the former, not the latter.

Put a bird on it

Prologue The most challenging design projects, they say, are the ones you do for yourself. Without parameters and constraints, timelines and clients, you miss the checks and balances that can often guide the process. The markers that tell you you're on the right track, moving in the right direction, are absent. When I was an undergraduate, I had a class where we had to design personal logos we could use on letterhead, stationery, and business cards in preparation for our impending job searches. It was honestly the hardest project of my college years.

Part 1: A Love Story On January 8, 2017, I proposed to my girlfriend, Eurry. It was three years to the day since our first date. We had met over a video conference when we both were working at Facebook; I was in San Francisco and she was in New York. I was a designer and she was a data researcher. One day in the middle of December, my team's project manager asked if I had some time to work on a small data visualization project for someone on the data team in New York. I reluctantly agreed. 'Small projects' always seemed to turn into 'big projects' and this was a team we hadn't worked with before. But a meeting was scheduled and I walked in knowing nothing. I was caught off guard when a cute girl wearing a black and white striped sweater from the New York office popped up on the video screen. I vaguely remember saying something to my project manager when we left the meeting about how cool Eurry seemed. I immediately sent her a Facebook friend request.

A few weeks later she was in the California office and we met in person to go over updates on the project. The meeting quickly turned into friendly conversation about our lives, discovering all sorts of shared interests. I didn't want the meeting to end. The next time she was in town, we went out for drinks and we have talked every day since, beginning what became a multi-year, bicoastal long distance relationship. We became best friends and fell in love.

We both eventually left Facebook — I went to graduate school and she went to work on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. We traveled, tried countless new restaurants, met each other's families, watched a lot of movies, and laughed a lot. We started talking about marriage, about moving in together, about our future. And then on a freezing, snowy morning last January after I pulled a ring from my pocket, I asked her to marry me. Through tears she said 'duh'.

But the story I'm writing here is not one of our relationship or of planning a wedding or even our wedding day. That's a story we want to save for our friends and family. Our married friends told us how all-consuming wedding planning can be so we decided early on that we'd share the planning responsibilities and take ownership over the parts we respectively cared more about. Eurry has stronger opinions about drinks, for example, so she'd handle the bar menu while I cared more about music and was tasked with choosing songs for our first dance and processional. You probably see where this is going: I was in charge of the visual design. And the visual design, it turned out, would be a special kind of challenge. This is a story about that process.

Part 2: Location, Location, Location Designing for our wedding became the hardest design project I've ever completed; certainly more challenging than those personal logos I did in college. It wasn't just about how I could represent our wedding visually but how to represent our entire relationship visually. We knew we wanted it to feel different — we wanted something casual and fun, informal and nontraditional. And we both desperately wanted to avoid the cliche calligraphy so dominant in wedding design these days. Almost immediately after we got engaged, I created a massive Illustrator file where I began setting our names in nearly every typeface I own in search of an interesting lockup or style that might emerge (perhaps something interesting with the double R's in both our names? Nope, too obvious), but for a long time it felt like I was going in circles, unable to figure out what our wedding should look like.

The biggest decision we had to make, however, was where we wanted to get married. One weekend last spring, we were sitting on the couch with our laptops looking at potential venues when Eurry found the John James Audubon House, located right outside Philadelphia and just forty-five minutes from where I grew up. We immediately knew this was where we wanted to get married. Audubon was a naturalist and a painter, most known for his paintings of birds. In an ambitious quest, he set out to paint every bird in North America, discovering at least twenty-five new species in the process. These paintings are collected in his famous book, The Birds of North America, which is considered the best ornithological work ever completed. This was Audubon's first home in North America and has since been converted to a public park, bird conservatory, and museum in his honor. We scheduled a visit a few weeks later and fell in love with the property — there was a beautiful apple orchard where we planned to hold the ceremony and an old barn perfect for a party. We picked a date and booked it.

It feels like cheating, but the venue helped clarify the visual design. The Audubon Society has made most of Audubon's paintings available in the public domain and offers high resolution reproductions as free downloads. I could use these images in the design! We both have love of birds and have a secret ambitions to get into birding. In fact, very early in our relationship, we laughed in amazement at how both of us had similar framed images of birds hanging in our apartments. Add the owl references from our favorite show and our love of Portlandia, a bird-themed wedding seemed perfect.

Part 3: Put a Bird On It With the venue booked and a library of high-resolution bird paintings on my hard drive, the design started to take shape. I went through countless typefaces — some were too formal and others too playful. I settled on ITC Serif Gothic for the logotype and Pitch for the accent typography. Serif Gothic is a typeface I've always admired but had yet to find an appropriate use for and Pitch has become a favorite monospace. Paired together, they immediately gave the design something that felt unique — blending the classic with the casual, the fun with the traditional.

I knew this would have to be treated like a brand — as it would be applied to everything from save the dates to name tags, invitations to menus — and needed to be flexible enough to work across mediums and scales. I decided we could allow design system to slowly reveal itself — using the incremental mailings, save the dates, invites, and RSVPs, to allow the entire aesthetic to unfold, each piece to increase in complexity and vibrancy as we got closer to the wedding day. The Save the Date cards that went out to our guests six months before the wedding were a simple black and white card, printed on a crisp white 130lb paper. A small vector bird perched atop an 'r' in Eurry's name hinted at the larger theme, the forest green envelopes previewed the color palette.

We directed guests to visit our website — eurryandjarrett.com — for travel and hotel details, links to our gift registry, and more information about the day itself. We used the website to introduce the venue and Audubon's paintings. The colors — forest green, a silvery-blue, and light pink — were pulled from a few of our favorite birds.

Three months later, the official invitations went out. Packaged in light blue envelopes, the invitations first appear to be black and white: the nameplate we introduced on the Save the Dates is on the front and opens for more information and RSVP details. But the invitation folds out one more time to reveal a large poster featuring a collage of Audubon's paintings, including the birds from which we pulled our colors as well as the state birds of California (where Eurry was born and where we met), Indiana (where I was born), New York (where we live now), and Pennsylvania (where I grew up and where we were getting married). We wanted something memorable — something that might not just be hung up on the refrigerator or thrown away after the wedding, but a piece of art our guests could remember our wedding by.

Part 4: The Day The design came together in a 20-page booklet I designed in place of a traditional program that included not only details about the day but also family photographs, a few of our favorite recipes, fun facts, and thank yous. Again, we wanted something people would want to keep — a scrapbook of sorts that our guests would feel invested in as they found photos of themselves and learn more about us and our story. The cover of the book expanded the collage from the invitation to include images of some of our favorite things and memorable moments in our relationship: the flowers from Eurry's bouquet, Twin Peaks and Portlandia, doughnuts, succulents, the Facebook sign, gummy bears, and ice cream.

Collage has become a go-to visual style of mine and is central to my own design process. For our wedding, I realized it could once again allow me to include everything we love instead of trying to find a color or style that somehow represented all of us. A key in the back of the book gave descriptions of everything hidden in the collage. This gave us variety in the design system while retaining a clear, distinct style; at once simple and diverse.

The venue offered their own signage, menus, and table numbers but we swapped them out for custom designs to match our design system. For dinner, three dishes were offered — chicken, fish, and vegetarian — and we asked our guests to select their preference on the RSVP cards. Their selections were noted on the name tags with small iconography to help the servers. (One of my favorite details: one couple brought their young child, who was served chicken fingers, and we noted his selection with a baby chick!). The florist decorated the tables forest green table clothes, navy napkins, and natural arrangements of ferns, succulents, and monstera. I designed table numbers that had Audubon's birds wrapped around each number, set in Serif Gothic that were placed in each arrangement. A small box with custom labels of black cherry gummy bears were set at each guest's plate as a small gift of thanks.

Beverages were offered before the ceremony started and were labeled with matching signage and drinks menus were displayed at the bar giving details on the wine and beer offerings. For the visitors who came in from out of town, a small gift bag was left in their hotel room with a few of our favorite things and a small postcard detailing the event (including the school bus that brought guests from the hotel to the venue!) and thanking them for coming into town. As if designing a brand system, every interaction our guests had at the wedding had been customized to match our design, from arriving at the hotel to the thank you notes sent out after. Each piece was fully branded and could stay on its own yet when brought together, created a narrative of our relationship.

It was fun to see it all come together and I enjoyed watching people read the booklets before the ceremony began. We couldn't have done it without the amazing team at Audubon and Jeffrey Miller Catering, who put it all together exactly like we wanted it. You can see more images of the design here.

Epilogue At the beginning of the summer, we got married in a barn in front of the people we love the most just as it began to rain. As we were pronounced husband and wife, Carly Rae Jepson's I Really Like You started playing. We moved to the pavilion where speeches brought us to tears; we ate and drank and thanked every guest for being there and being a part of our lives; we danced into the night as the rain poured outside.

The entire day feels like a blur to me. It was hard to take it all in. All the planning, all the designing, all the celebrating felt like a whirlwind. You know you've been to a good party, I think, when you have no pictures to remember it by. You were so in the moment you forgot to stop and document it. When we talked to our families the next day, none of us had any photos. So when we got our wedding photos back last week, we poured through every single one, reliving the day as spectators, piecing together the memories we had made. The same is true of the design. Designing for my own wedding was easily the hardest design project of my life because this wasn't another design or branding project but a scrapbook of our lives so far and a commemoration of our new life together. This was how we'd remember the day. Working on these pieces consumed our lives for the few months leading up the wedding and though it was just a small part of a day filled with friends and family and laughing and dancing and eating and drinking and birds and love. They serve as markers in time, totems for ourselves and our family and friends. Another way to remember a perfect day. It was the best day of my life. The next day, my face hurt from smiling so much.

The sealing rites of Valla. After being crowned Queen of the Forgotten Kingdom, Kamui had many meetings with the people's representatives from Valla, Hoshido and Nohr alike, as well as their rulers (since she herself was also part of the nohrian rule, things ran smoothly on their side, for one) so as to determine whether or not the decaying land was still habitable.

And where to send its people to if evacuation was the solution.

First, search parties were sent all throughout the land so as to gather as many survivors as possible (rather, to find all of them) and then distribute them between the allying kingdoms.

However, after Anankos' defeat, the curse plaguing Valla and all of its portals connecting to the worlds above the Bottomless Canyon were unlocked. Anyone with vallite descent would be able to cross the borders were they so much close to a natural body of water. As the daughter of the ancient being who cut off all communication in first place, Kamui brought it upon herself to close every portal with the help of Azura's song and her own innate power.

She would need to travel through the land, sealing any possible portal as well as locking the area so no one could get close -- that way she would know which places were completely evacuated and were ready for a complete sealing. She would then erect a barrier  around the perimeter so that, when the day came that she was finally done sealing the entire land, she could close off the whole domain and lock it from the outside of the last portal inside Krakenburg Castle.

It had been two years since she had started the rites and she was only at the beginning -- her first pregnancy and nursing had also a hand at delaying them.

Crown Prince Siegbert was barely three when he pulled his mother's performing gown, mesmerized at how beautiful she was. "Mommy..." He called with a small voice, holding one hand over his mouth, almost biting it as though his growing teeth bothered him.

Kamui felt her heart almost explode with cuteness -- her son's pointy ears were even droopy because he was unsure of what to do! Too cute! -- and picked the boy up in her arms. "Hmm? What can Mommy do for her boy?" She smiled brightly, the crown and accessories that came with her gown jiggling over her forehead, catching Siegbert's attention.

"Sieggy go too..." He said, chewing on one hand as he reached out for her crown with the other.

The Queen almost cried as she dug her face into her boy's belly. "Of course Sieggy goes too!" She said at the same time a quick knock was heard on her door.

"Are you ready, my Queen? I have come to pick you up," Xander asked from outside, opening the door shortly after only to find his wife cuddling with their son, both of their matching hair colors standing out over her colorful outfit. A warm smile grew over his lips as he watched the scene with a bubbly feeling in his heart.

Kamui looked at her husband and trotted to his side, giving Siegbert for him to hold, her eyes shining with expectation. "You're coming to watch today too, right?" She exchanged glances with her son and they both looked at him with pleading eyes. "Riight?"

"Wiight?" Siegbert asked, copying his mother.

Xander stretched his neck back, feeling his cheeks redden with the adorable display of underhanded manipulation his wife and child performed. "You rascals," he covered his face with one hand, the other one securely holding his son by his chest, "planning to blackmail me, are you? A rather bold course of action to use on your King." He fought a smile under his hand, enjoying how both Kamui's and Siegbert's deep-red eyes sparkled.

Kamui simply put herself on her toes so as to steal a kiss and jump beside her husband. "It's going to be the first time Siegbert's watching me! I'm so excited!"

The King squinted playfully at his wife. "I never agreed to this coercion, my Queen."

"Oh!" Kamui let out a fake gasp, putting one hand over mouth so Siegbert would look at her. "A King who doesn't listen to his people!" She trotted towards him and placed her forehead on her son's. "Don't be like that when you grow up, hm?"

"P-pwomise!" Siegbert replied, not really understanding what was going on. But Mommy and Daddy smiled afterwards so it was probably what he was supposed to say! "Eehee... Mommy is sho pwetty." The vegetarian ingredients were labeled accordingly when they resembled their non-vegetarian counterparts. The boxes also contained printed menu cards, postcards depicting the ingredients for each of the courses, and 1-page leaflets clearly indicating each of the prep and plating steps.

Our experiences with the Cook Like a Chef food box: They certainly delivered on their statement that preparing the dishes would be super simple and that no culinary skills or fancy kitchen equipment are needed. An oven, a stove, a grater, and a stick blender is all that we needed. Grating some lime zest, heating ingredients on the stove and in the oven, putting the stick blender into the lobster sauce to make it foamy, boiling ravioli, and frying the langoustines and the quail roulades were about as cheffy as it would get. The only ingredients you need to add yourself are some butter for cooking the quail and some salt for the last-minute marinade salmon trout.

The indicated overall timing is accurate; we had 1 person cooking, and 2 doing the assembly and plating, and we could put all the courses on the table within 20 minutes. Each course and its presentation had its different character, reflecting the chefs. Hence, we found that none of the dishes needed additional seasoning. We found that the chicken ravioli on their own were borderline overseasoned, but still agreeable when combined with the other elements on the plate.

Any downsides? Yes, but a few minor ones. Unfortunately, some of the quantities of the ingredients were 1 or 2 short (the pumpkin slices for the first course and the cinnamon stick mousse for the dessert). Furthermore, given the replacement ingredients for the Vegetarian menu (quinoa salad and the stalk of a cauliflower), one could argue that a slightly lower price tag is warranted.

Nevertheless, the portions themselves are generous; definitely more substantial than as part of a menu in one of these restaurants. Therefore, after finishing the 4 courses — served over 3½ hours — we were replete and delighted that the Cook like a Chef food box turned out to be a splendid way to say farewell to 2019!

“Sometimes, dogs will show pain by licking the affected area or trembling in the affected leg,” Dr. Lobos explains. “They can also sometimes become protective of the area and shy away when touched.”

When is dog limping a symptom of other issues?

Limping might not even be your dog’s issue. In fact, it might just be a symptom of another problem altogether.

As mentioned above, smaller breed and toy breed dogs may suffer from luxating patellas and larger dogs might battle CCL issues.

“Depending on the severity of the limping — if they won’t put weight on the limb, are vocalizing from pain, or there is an open wound, they should be seen as soon as possible,” Dr. Lobos recommends. “It’s always best to err on the side of caution and take them in whenever they are not walking normally.”

How can you help a limping dog?

What can you do to alleviate the pain associated with dog limping?

“Depending on the severity of the limping and injury, comforting the dog until they get to the veterinarian can be very helpful in settling the mind of the dog so the veterinarian can do the best job possible on their physical exam,” Dr. Lobos says. “If there is a cut that is bleeding, applying a light bandage to the area until they get to the vet’s office can give the dog a less painful surface to stand on — if the cut or injury is on the pad or paw.”

According to Dr. Lobos, pet owners should refrain from giving medications to their dogs.

“Avoid giving any human medications, as they can be toxic to the dog or interfere with the medication that the veterinarian might want to prescribe for pain,” Dr. Lobos says.

How to treat dog limping

Once at the veterinarian, how is dog limping identified and treated? According to Dr. Lobos, veterinarians will focus on the symptoms displayed in order to choose an appropriate treatment plan for dog limping. This could include pain meds, a splint or brace, icing of a wound or irritated area, or heating of an area that experiences chronic pain.

“Depending on the injury, [veterinarians] may give pain medication, place a split or brace, recommend ice (for acute injuries) or heat (for more chronic issues), or perhaps recommend surgery and physical rehabilitation,” Dr. Lobos explains.

Dog limping can happen for many different reasons. There are two main kinds of limping: gradual onset and sudden limping.

Sudden limping refers to a limp then generally comes on quickly, most likely after some kind of significant trauma or injury, while gradual onset refers to underlying chronic conditions. With dog limping, these chronic conditions could include osteoarthritis, dysplasia or Lyme disease.

What causes dog limping?

Paw injuries, joint issues or disease, bone disease, and other general types of injury or trauma are the most common causes of dog limping.

“First, check the paws,” says Dr. Lobos. “Oftentimes, we look to the elbows, wrists, ankles and knees and forget to look see if there is something stuck in their pads or between their pads.”

When a dog’s paws or paw pads are agitated by a foreign body, it’s not only uncomfortable for the dog, but ultimately, it could lead to a dangerous infection. Other minor injuries like insect or animal bites or stings could potentially cause tenderness to the affected area, therefore resulting in limping. After inspecting a dog’s paws, toenails are another area pet owners should pay attention to.

“Broken toenails can be painful and certainly cause limping,” Dr. Lobos adds. Burns, frostbite, bruising and any kind of cut could also be the root cause of dog limping.

Dog limping in dogs of different sizes

Different kinds of ailments can also target dogs depending on size. “For medium- to large-size dogs, a top cause for acute limping is a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL). In people it is known as their ACL, in dogs, it’s their CCL,” Dr. Lobos explains.

“In smaller breed and toy breed dogs, they can have a condition called luxating patellas that can cause them to limp intermittently,” Dr. Lobos says. “This is where their knee caps will slide abnormally in and out of the groove in their femur.”

Because dogs can’t talk to tell us what’s hurting or bothering them, it’s important to pay attention to their behavior in order to identify symptoms. And sometimes dog limping isn’t as obvious as it might seem.

“Sometimes, dogs will show pain by licking the affected area or trembling in the affected leg,” Dr. Lobos explains. “They can also sometimes become protective of the area and shy away when touched.”

When is dog limping a symptom of other issues?

Limping might not even be your dog’s issue. In fact, it might just be a symptom of another problem altogether.

As mentioned above, smaller breed and toy breed dogs may suffer from luxating patellas and larger dogs might battle CCL issues.

Older dogs are also more at risk for limping. “Older dogs can limp from osteoarthritis that can affect any limb and even their neck and back,” Dr. Lobos explains. “As large breed dogs are also at risk for development of osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that affects the bones, it can be a cause of acute limping.”

Dr. Lobos explains that other orthopedic conditions — “such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and osteochondrosis dessicans (a condition that affects the cartilage development, particularly in younger dogs) — can also cause limping.”

If you’re unsure if your pet’s symptoms are severe enough to warrant a visit to the vet, it’s always best to contact your veterinarian and explain the situation. If a dog isn’t putting weight on a specific limb or is crying, definitely consult a vet immediately.

“Depending on the severity of the limping — if they won’t put weight on the limb, are vocalizing from pain, or there is an open wound, they should be seen as soon as possible,” Dr. Lobos recommends. “It’s always best to err on the side of caution and take them in whenever they are not walking normally.”

How can you help a limping dog?

What can you do to alleviate the pain associated with dog limping?

“Depending on the severity of the limping and injury, comforting the dog until they get to the veterinarian can be very helpful in settling the mind of the dog so the veterinarian can do the best job possible on their physical exam,” Dr. Lobos says. “If there is a cut that is bleeding, applying a light bandage to the area until they get to the vet’s office can give the dog a less painful surface to stand on — if the cut or injury is on the pad or paw.”

According to Dr. Lobos, pet owners should refrain from giving medications to their dogs.

“Avoid giving any human medications, as they can be toxic to the dog or interfere with the medication that the veterinarian might want to prescribe for pain,” Dr. Lobos says.

How to treat dog limping

Once at the veterinarian, how is dog limping identified and treated? According to Dr. Lobos, veterinarians will focus on the symptoms displayed in order to choose an appropriate treatment plan for dog limping. This could include pain meds, a splint or brace, icing of a wound or irritated area, or heating of an area that experiences chronic pain.

“Depending on the injury, [veterinarians] may give pain medication, place a split or brace, recommend ice (for acute injuries) or heat (for more chronic issues), or perhaps recommend surgery and physical rehabilitation,” Dr. Lobos explains.

In Dr. Lobos’ own words, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and consult a vet when it comes to dog limping.
