Hey I think I'm a little late but you asked about history book recs I think? Is there a time period or something specific you're interested in? I read almost exclusively nonfiction and a lot of history/philosophy so I might be able to help find something specific for you

Oh yea! I love prehistory in general, paleolithic, then some prechristian religion studies, old English/ anglo saxon, indigenous north america, uhh and general religious studies stuff particularly europe and the middle east. Not history but linguistics too are really cool, I've been particularly interested in old English linguistics. I'd love to find some good books on pre christian anglo saxon culture, an anthropology / religious studies perspective on European folklore and what has roots in pre christian culture and what doesn't, etc. I guess I'm more interested in specifically prehistory and religious studies more than regular history haha. And it'd be cool to find some cool research on indigenous north america religious studies or culture that is fairly modern, or preferably from an indigenous perspective, but I kinda don't have much hope that that exists. I may look into that book about paleolithic north america or whatever it's called, I need to see if that's considered accurate and trustworthy

I just wanna make sure any books I get are reliable and well researched and not just a guy writing what he thinks. I've found a few books that caught my eye on particular topics, but they're often like. Upwards of $100 and sometimes up to like $500 lol.

SECRET SANTA ATTACK!! A beetle Loop for my gift victim @petrii-dish >:3c

I saw "insects" and "Loop" on their wishlist and neurons started firing. I'm always saying that I love when people creature-fy characters I like, but I've never done the creature-ing myself until now!

While going through Pep's blog for inspiration, I saw art of a woolly chafer beetle drawn by @/bowelfly. I'd never seen them before, and let me tell you they're the cutest bug I've ever seen and I was obsessed with them immediately. So round... so woolly...

As I was going down the woolly chafer appreciation rabbit hole, I started noticing traits I could incorporate into Loop's design. And thus; beetle Loop! :] (Although their antennae are more common cockchafer inspired. Their big antenna fans are so fancy!)

Lots of rambling and bonus art of a much more beetle-looking Loop under the cut, so be warned if you're squicked by bugs

The creatuuuure. Boop here was my first time trying to draw organic shapes with vanishing point guides and such. It went... okay...? No clue how people apply that to more complicated shapes like people though, heh.

Anyways, back to the humanoid Boops. The design elements I focused on were the antenna leaves looking like those shards of light you can see in the opening CG and some of Loop's portraits, the fluff and tibia spikes substituting for Loop's skin frizzles, wings with veins made up of constellations, and that very peculiar angular elytra shape. ;)

I had to stop myself from going ham and making the design super detailed, because I wanted it to look like something you could reasonably imagine in-game. I think I did alright in that regard! Their suspicious elytra ended up feeling fitting too, since only seeing them from the front in-game would make that foreshadowing more subtle. Also, while my decision to make them a beetle was 100% just "I really love that beetle I saw", I like the implication that the Universe was like, "Stars, you have a thick shell. Become a beetle." 😂

I struggled for a bit trying to place clock hands in the first drawing, but then I started to think that a handless clock is kinda fitting? Love when I can cover laziness with symbolism. :P

Time taken on designing and the first two drawings was 31 hours and 34 minutes (I forgot to tally them separately whoops), and beetle Boop took 8 hours and 44 minutes. It was supposed to be a doodle (because common cockchafers are sometimes called "doodlebugs" get it-) but I'm SO bad at doodling. Got lost in the perspective ruler sauce.

I loved chapter 2, especially the one with Keir (He's my favorite<3) Will you add extras or make a comic or mini novel about certain scenes that don't appear in the game? I really want to see the other members of the group making fun of Keir for his "obvious" crush on Vesper lol. By the way, what does Keir think every time Vesper suddenly uses him as a pillow?<3

Additional material is really fun to think about and we have a DLC in-joke that would be fun to execute, but I think it mostly depends on the future. Right now we're locked into getting Francesco and Oleander's second chapters done, so additional material is at the back of our minds. But if Obscura winds up doing really well when everything is done then it becomes way easier to consider something like a fandisk or side-stories or DLC.

Basically, since Obscura is 100% side-project for us, right now we're taking development one milestone at a time. DLC and additional material is on our wishlist, alongside things like merch and voice acting as, "We want this, but we can't prioritise it over development".

So good news! We're in a 30-day shelter with a caseworker and help from the City of Encinitas Homeless Support Program to get housing with 30 days. It's a brand new shelter and we're all together in a room with the cats, and they're really eager to help get us out of our homeless situation.

Right now, we have about $1000 in money we can save up each month. If we can pay off the debts that my mom owes that she's in credit consolidation for, that frees up another $187 each month. If I can pay off my installment loan, which is four payments totaling $475, that frees up another $124 a month. I think my mom just paid off a credit card debt, but we have $100 debt that I think has gone to collections, $500 we need to pay on a card before that one goes to collections, and $300 for my PayPal 4 in 4 payments. We also have two payday loans I'd like to pay off before they're due at $600.

So if I can cover all that debt this month, we'll have well over $1,500 to put towards a rental payment in May, if we can get help with a security deposit and first month's rent through housing programs. We might be able to afford a two bedroom apartment in Fallbrook with that much. We'd need to come up with money to move our stuff out of storage as well, but a friend of mine has covered the big units until April 1st and may cover them an extra month if needed.

Any help would be amazing. We are so close to getting out of hotels/our car and into something stable. I'm setting the goal at $3000 for now because I don't have wifi at the shelter and can't check exactly how much my mom owes for her debt consolidation still.

But any extra will help with gas to get to places where we can get things we need (birth certificates, Lena's social security card with her dead name, Lena's psych eval, my mom's dental stuff, and doctor/therapy appointments) and food in case the snafu with my food stamps isn't fixed right away (we get three meals here, which is fine for me and Lena, but my mom is basically still on a soft food/liquid diet and they're still needing to get stuff for her and the gentleman here who has no teeth).

Do you ever just get obsessed with how cultural Christians (esp atheist or agnostic ones) often openly choose to maintain Santa Claus for their kids?

Like think about this with me:

A group of people who don't actively align themselves with religious life, religious institutions (churches) or other traditions, and may even be total atheists STILL sometimes choose to do Santa Claus for their children, because THEY had Santa Claus as children.

The parents give their child a folk demigod (lesser deity?) of outsized importance to children SPECIFICALLY, and teach them the demigod is definitely totally real. They maintain this active belief as long as possible through childhood. They may encourage and actively engage in this belief with their children moreso than anything else involving the religion it comes from (aside from perhaps, the easter bunny). They know Santa isn't real, does not exist, and is a fiction.

They know their children will learn this demigod is a lie. Subconsciously or consciously, the child then learns that Santa Claus is really only as real as the parent intention to make him real, and the child belief in that truth. The child grows up. Knows Santa is a fiction. And then they make Santa for their children too, because that's the only real thing about Santa — parents knowing it's a fiction and then passing it on anyways.

I just like...am deeply fascinated by this unique cultural training of accepting that the Santa deity isn't dead or anything so extreme, and even though he's made up, he is still extremely important and the fiction gets passed on while explicitly knowing and acting upon the fiction. Parents have to be Santa, they can't just encourage belief and sit back. No no, they must actively CREATE Santa's existence for the belief to work. And they do this willingly!

It's not that I think believing in a myth is unusual in any religion (like we don't need to believe hundreds of thousands of Israelites fled Egypt all at once to observe passover or even to think some Hebrews did flee Egypt and the legend developed from there, or w/e), so much as like, this is an incredibly obvious and well known one that every adult Knows 100% is Not Real, not even based on any kind of reality or possible actual legend, Santa doesn't have all those powers, he does not come to your house or get your wishlist (prayers).

No adult has a pure and genuine belief that Santa is a real being who visits and brings children gifts.

I just want to study everyone who actively is like "I don't believe in God or go to church but like, I'll obviously still do Santa for the kids, that's fun."

Religion doesn't need to be grounded in imperial facts of science in order to provide substantial benefits to people, foster positive emotions and connections within communities, and for people to derive meaning from it? It doesn't matter if God is real, if you yourself make the benefits of God being real happen for yourself and others?")

Just realized I can cross off like 5 things that have been on my 2024 wishlist all year and it made me really happy cause I've been really wanting to get clear with myself about stuff I think is truly worth spending money on vs just randomly spending a little money here and there - so like making a Google doc with only my dream earrings, nice French wooden bristle brushes, and things I know I will love for a lifetime vs just shopping sales and letting it all pile up feels good I feel like I am starting to really live quality over quantity which can be so hard to do when it's there so much cheap imitation stuff pumped out into the world

I really wanna support people and things I believe in and not just buy things for convenience like if I can find a 100% cotton skirt from a brand that cares about our bodies and the earth then yes I am going to pay double over like just grabbing something at uniqlo or whatever is easiest
