i'm not at all bothered about people disliking john because entirely valid tbh and someone else's opinion changes nothing for me. i just think the militant anti john brigade - that is, those that make up textually unsupported and entirely leftfield reasons to dislike him - are really missing out.
the thing is, we've got an absolute buffet of an interesting and irreparably fucked up character here. we could debate the absolute Horrors of john winchester and his a+ parenting for days on end literally from the two seconds of screentime he had. because he does suck! it's totally fair to say that canon john is selfish, neglectful and at best emotionally abusive. now i'm defo no apologist (see username) - but he's also the furthest thing from a cardboard shitty abusive dad. there is serious context for the things he does and the way he thinks.
john's life was hell man. his own dad, for all he knew, abandoned him. he went to war young and almost certainly came back with ptsd. these things alone don't exactly make life easy but then your wife burns to death on a ceiling and you're left a widower and a single dad to a baby and a pre schooler before you're even thirty? then discover that it couldn't even be a plain old housefire but no - there is actual Evil out there and you and your children are not safe and never will be?
the desire for revenge is understandable. the desire to do stupid and paradoxically dangerous things to protect your children are understandable. right, good or healthy? no. but understandable. and that's what makes a good sympathetic character.
basically i think a lot of negative readings of john exaggerate the badness of his intentions and ignore his humanity. it's also understandable that john is not a beacon of emotional regulation. it's also understandable that he cant always balance being emotionally and physically there for his kids with Fighting The Horrors. pour alcohol misuse onto this dumpster fire and you're not getting a perfect person, or a perfect parent. you're getting a broken human who was focused only on keeping his kids safe, alive, protected, and able to protect themselves. sure, he had tunnel vision about it. he did it very badly. he controlled sam as the youngest and parentified dean as the oldest. he made sam feel misunderstood and smothered. he made dean feel completely responsible for the welfare of his brother and dependent on john's praise and approval as his second in command.
john fucked his kids up IMMEASURABLY. he thought he was doing the right thing.
also - remember young john? remember how he's softly spoken and loves his cars and adores his girlfriend and respects his fucking elders and, to quote mary, "believes in happy endings"? remember the doting dad we see for like a minute in the pilot? is that not meant to show us that, had his life not taken the turn it did - he would likely have been an entirely different person? how is the tragedy of that not also completely DELICIOUS??
so why homophobic john? why john who beat dean senseless regularly? why john who gave no shits and wanted his boys to be miserable? why these embellishments that make him someone else, someone with nothing good inside of him, when what canon gives us is so much better?
come on guys. the tragic messy sad angry selfish HUMAN john we got in the show is an absolute treat. why are we making him an irredeemable, unfeeling and uncomplicated asshole who doesn't give a shit about his boys. ya'll saw him spending a good 50% of his screen time crying about how much he loved them right? and sam and dean KNEW he loved them. they also knew, or in dean's case came to realise, that he was a terrible father in many ways. real life is messy and nuanced. families are messy and nuanced. and imo spn got this so right.
#john winchester#should probably add that i love a dark!john in fic lol#but that's why he's dark!john and not regular john!#pushing canon to its nastiest limit is hot and cute and delicious#but god cardboard abusive dad john is so boring#wank adjacent

The only light in the middle of the clearing in the woods came from John’s wrapped, burning body. You stood wordlessly between Dean and Sam, watching as the pyre burned to ash. Dean stared silently while his brother fought tears.
It felt so odd to have spent so much time looking for John— a man you'd only met in passing during a hunt a little over a year ago— to now be standing in front of his burning corpse. It almost felt anticlimactic if you detached emotion completely from your situation.
On the very real and guttural side of things, though, you knew that having spent so little time with John after looking for him for almost a year was going to take a horrible toll on his boys, especially your Dean.
Sam spoke for the first time in hours. “Before he.. before... did he say anything to you? About anything?”
Dean refused to look at you or his brother, but said, “No. Nothing.”
An obvious lie.
***
Over a week after John’s funeral, you were watching Dean work on his car at Bobby’s. Bobby had been nice enough to let the three of you stay with him while Dean got the Impala back in working order.
Selfishly, every time you looked at Dean, you wanted to come right out with your feelings. Although, he was grieving, and you did not want to take advantage of his vulnerability. You wouldn't want your relationship to be born out of such a terrible tragedy.
However, you would continue to be there for him however he needed, even if that meant sitting next to him in the hot sun silently for hours and handing him a wrench every once in a while. You knew better than to ask if he was okay. You’d lost your father, too and knew he wouldn’t be okay for quite some time.
At first, he’d barely tolerated you sitting next to him. He fought you on everything you tried to do for him, but you got him to shut up after a few days. You knew he knew what you were playing at, and you could tell he appreciated it nonetheless.
Sam, on the other hand, wasn’t nearly as well-fortified against his emotions. You could hear him crying in the next room almost nightly, and it broke your heart. But you would rather Sam cry than build himself up against negative feelings the way his brother did. He was more into the touchy-feely-hug-it-out therapy style, and you were more than happy to give that to him. These boys needed you to be strong for them, and you would happily do so for as long as they needed.
“How's the car coming along?” Sam asked, approaching you and Dean, who was under his car. You sat next to where his boots stuck out with a tool box in your lap.
“Slow,” Dean responded.
“Yeah? Need any help?”
“What, you under a hood? I'll pass.”
“Need anything else, then?”
Dean rolled himself out from under the car and stood up above you. You looked between Dean’s face, set in hard lines, and his brother’s puppy-dog stare. “Stop it, Sam.”
“Stop what?” the younger brother asked innocently.
“Stop asking if I need anything, stop asking if I'm okay. I'm okay. Really. I promise,” Dean scoffed.
“Alright, Dean, it's just—” Sam took a deep breath. “We've been at Bobby's for over a week now, and you haven't brought up Dad once.”
“You know what? You're right. Come here. I'm gonna lay my head gently on your shoulder. Maybe we can cry, hug, and maybe even slow dance.” You knew the bite in Dean’s voice was all a mask.
“Don't patronize me, Dean,” Sam returned. “Dad is dead. The Colt is gone, and it seems pretty damn likely that the demon is behind all of this, and you're acting like nothing happened.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“Say something, all right? Hell, say anything! Aren't you angry? Don't you want revenge? But all you do is sit out here all day long buried underneath this damn car.”
“Sam, let it go—” you tried, but Dean continued to talk over you.
“Revenge, huh?” Dean chuckled humorlessly. “Sounds good. You got any leads on where the demon is? Making heads or tails of any of Dad's research? Because I sure ain't. But you know, if we do finally find it— oh. No, wait, like you said. The Colt's gone. But I'm sure you've figured out another way to kill it. We've got nothing, Sam. Nothing, okay? So you know the only thing I can do? Is I can work on the car.” He got back down under it.
“Well, we've got something, alright?” Sam crouched down next to you and handed you a cell phone. “It’s what I came out here to tell you. This is one of dad's old phones. Took me a while, but I cracked his voicemail code. Listen to this.”
Dean pushed himself out from under the car again and sat up next to you as you played the voicemail. “John, it's Ellen. Again. Look, don't be stubborn, you know I can help you. Call me.”
“That message is four months old,” Sam explained.
“Dad saved that chick's message for four months?” Dean raised an eyebrow.
Sam nodded.
“Who’s Ellen?” you asked. “Any mention of her in your dad’s journal?”
“No. But I ran a trace on her phone number, and I got an address.”
***
You and the boys ended up taking one of Bobby’s beat-up minivans to the Roadhouse Saloon; the address Ellen’s voicemail led to.
“This is humiliating. I feel like a fuckin’ soccer mom!” Dean groaned as he parked the car.
“It’s the only one Bobby had running, dude,” you reminded him. You followed the boys into the purposefully dilapidated-looking building.
“Hello? Anybody here?” Dean asked loudly. No response ever came. All you could hear was a fly buzzing and a light popping. You caught sight of a man passed out on the pool table facing away from you.
“Hey, buddy?” Sam said. He turned back to you and Dean. “I'm guessing that isn't Ellen.” He headed into a back room to look around. You walked a little ahead of Dean, only turning around when you heard him say. “Oh god, please let that be a rifle.”
You whipped out your gun and turned to see a pretty petite blonde holding a cocked rifle to Dean’s back. “No, I'm just real happy to see you. Don't move.”
“Hey!” you said. She looked to you, but didn’t move her gun from Dean’s back. “You shoot him, and you’re dead,” you told her.
“Well, he moves, and he’s dead,” she replied.
“Ladies, Ladies, please,” Dean smirked. “You know, you should know something, miss. When you put a rifle on someone, you don't want to put it right against their back. Because it makes it real easy to do…” He turned around fluidly and grabbed the rifle. “That.”
The blonde punched him square in the nose and took back the rifle. You cocked your pistol, catching her attention.
“Sam! A little help, please!” Dean said.
“Sorry, Dean, I can't right now. I'm a... little tied up.” Sam walked out with his hands on his head and a shotgun pointed at the back of him. An older woman walked out holding it. “Sam? Dean? Winchester?” she said.
“Yeah…?” Dean said.
“Son of a bitch,” the woman muttered.
The blonde spoke up next. “Mom, you know these guys?”
“Yeah, I think these are John Winchester's boys,” she answered, lowering the gun and laughing. “Hey, I'm Ellen. This is my daughter Jo.”
Jo lowered her rifle as well. “Hey,” she smiled.
“Oh, we’re just supposed to be cool now?” you remarked, still pointing your gun at the blonde.
“(Y/N), cool it,” Dean warned. You did as told and slowly lowered your gun, still stand-offish.
“You're not gonna hit me again, are you?” Dean asked Jo.
Ellen handed him a small towel filled with ice.
“Thanks. You called our dad, said you could help. Help with what?” he asked as he took it from her.
“Well, the demon, of course,” she stated as if it was obvious. “I heard he was closing in on it.”
“What, was there an article in the Demon Hunters Quarterly that I missed?” Dean snarked. “I mean, who- who are you? How do you know about all this?”
The brunette scoffed. “Hey, I just run a saloon. But hunters have been known to pass through now and again. Including your dad a long time ago. John was like family once.”
“Oh yeah? How come he never mentioned you before?”
She looked down and softened her voice. “You'd have to ask him that.”
“So why exactly do we need your help?” Dean questioned.
Now you wanted Dean to cool it. “Relax, man,” you warned.
“Hey, don't do me any favors. Look, if you don't want my help, fine. Don't let the door smack your ass on the way out. But John wouldn't have sent you if—” Ellen stopped suddenly. “He didn't send you.” She looked frantically between Dean and Sam. “He's all right, isn't he?”
Dean refused to look at her, but Sam answered instead. “No. No, he isn't. It was the demon, we think. It, um, it just got him before he got it, I guess.”
Ellen looked sad. “I’m so sorry.”
“It's okay. We're all right,” Dean replied.
“Really? I know how close you and your dad were.”
“Really, lady, I'm fine,” he growled.
“Dean, relax,” you urged him quietly.
Sam continued the conversation with Ellen. “So look, if you can help, we could use all the help we can get.”
“Well, we can't. But Ash will,” she smirked.
“Who's Ash?” you asked.
“Ash!” she called.
You turned to the man on the pool table as he jerked up and flailed up. “What? It closin' time?”
Sam snorted. “That’s Ash?”
Jo hummed. “Mm-hmm. He's a genius.”
You looked at her, skeptical.
“Sit, please,” Ellen said, and she and her daughter moved around the bar opposite you while you slapped a folder down in front of Ash. He sat across the bar from you.
“You've gotta be kidding me, this guy's no genius. He's a Lynyrd Skynyrd roadie,” Dean remarked.
Ash grinned drunkenly. “I like you.”
“Thanks,” the older brother smiled, seeming slightly confused by the drunk.
“Just give him a chance,” Jo urged.
You opened the folder and pushed it toward Ash. “That’s about a year’s worth of John’s work. See if you can make heads or tails of it.”
Ash shook his head as he looked through the papers. “Come on. This crap ain't real. There ain't nobody can track a demon like this.”
“Our dad could,” said Sam.
“There are non-parametrics, statistical overviews, prospects and correlations, I mean, damn!” Ash’s cadence made you giggle. “They're signs. Omens. Uh, if you can track 'em, you can track this demon. You know, like crop failures, electrical storms— You ever been struck by lightning? It ain't fun.”
“Can you track it or not?” Sam asked.
“Yeah, with this, I think so. But it's gonna take time, uh, give me—” he thought for a moment— “fifty-one hours.” He got up to leave, but Dean stopped him.
“I, uh, I dig the haircut.”
He waved his hair around dramatically. “All business up front, party in the back.”
Jo walked around Dean, flirting a little. You could’ve killed her.
He offered Jo a polite smile, but you apparently were not doing a good job of hiding your jealousy.
“Easy, tiger,” Dean chuckled, shooting you a smirk.
You could practically feel Jo checking Dean out.
“She’s looking at you like a hunk of meat,” you replied, talking through your teeth.
“What, you mean, like you do?” he replied, smirking.
“I do not!” You paused at his deadpan look. “I mean, sometimes, maybe, quite possibly, but not right now.”
He nodded. “And you know, I, uh, I appreciate that.”
“Do you really? Sounded like you had a gun to your head when you said that,” you giggled.
He looked back at you sincerely. “You know I do.”
"I do just have... one question, though," you said, unable to stop the words coming out of your mouth due to the sudden, subtle flirting coming from Dean.
He nodded for you to continue.
"I'm assuming you pieced together what I was gonna tell you back at the hospital," you trailed off.
Dean nodded again, the ends of his lips tugging upward.
"You're not... freaked out?"
He shook his head, still smiling. "Opposite of freaked out."
You could feel your cheeks heating, and you looked down at the bar in front of you. Dean's chuckle was music to your ears despite the way it spurred on your embarrassment.
Then, Sam approached you and Dean. “A few murders, not far from here, that Ellen caught wind of. Looks to me like there might be a hunt.”
“Yeah. So?” Dean asked.
“So, I told her we'd check it out.”
***
Dean continued to grumble about the “stupid minivan” the whole way to your next hunt. Sam did research as you scribbled in your journal. Helping the boys was a task you wouldn't give up for anything, but it was beginning to bring up some negative emotions and memories for you. Journaling was helping to calm the storm inside you.
“You've gotta be kidding me. A killer clown?” Dean scoffed.
“Yeah. He left the daughter unharmed and killed the parents. Ripped them to pieces, actually,” Sam responded.
“And this family was at some carnival that night?”
“Right, right. The, uh, Cooper Carnivals.”
“So, how do we know it’s not some psycho in a clown suit?” you piped up.
“Well, the cops have no viable leads, and all the employees were tearing down shop. Alibis all around. Plus this girl said she saw a clown vanish into thin air. Cops are saying trauma, of course,” Sam explained.
“Well, I know what you're thinking, Sam. Why did it have to be clowns?” Dean mocked.
“Oh, give me a break,” the brunet muttered.
You smiled but refused to make fun of him, because “everyone is afraid of something.”
“You’re scared of clowns?” you asked.
“Yeah, he still busts out crying whenever he sees Ronald McDonald on the television,” Dean told you.
“Well, at least I'm not afraid of flying,” Sam deadpanned.
“Planes crash!”
“And apparently clowns kill!”
"Boys—!"
“Yeah, you’re right,” Dean mumbled. “So these types of murders, they ever happen before?”
“Uh, according to the file, 1981, the Bunker Brothers Circus, same M.O. It happened three times, three different locales,” the younger Winchester explained.
“It’s weird, though, spirits are usually bound to specific locales, y’know,” you said. “So how's this one moving from city to city, carnival to carnival?”
“Cursed object, maybe,” Dean suggested. “Spirit attaches itself to something and the, uh, carnival carries it around with them.”
“Great. Paranormal scavenger hunt.” You crossed your arms over your chest.
“Well, blame Sam. It was his idea. By the way, why is that? You were awfully quick to jump on this job.” Dean threw a look to his brother.
“So?”
“It's just… not like you, that's all. I thought you were hell-bent for leather on the demon hunt.”
You eyed Sam strangely, too.
The younger Winchester softened. “I don't know, I just think, this job, it's what Dad would have wanted us to do.”
“What Dad would have wanted?” Dean turned his face to Sam.
“Yeah. So?” Sam challenged.
“Nothin'.”
***
You and the boys decided to join the carnival after the second family had been murdered to get a closer look at the happenings during the carnival. “Friends close, freak-shows closer,” Dean had said.
When you entered yet another tent in search of the show’s organizer. You found a man throwing knives at a target; all landing near but not quite on the bulls-eye.
“Excuse me, we're looking for a Mr. Cooper; have you seen him around?” the older brother asked.
The man turned around and pulled off his sunglasses. “What is that, some kind of joke?”
“Oh. God, I'm— I'm sorry,” Dean said.
“You think I wouldn't give my teeth to see Mr. Cooper? Or a sunset, or anything at all?”
Dean whispered to you, “Wanna give me a little help here?”
You shook your head. “Not really.”
“Hey man, is there a problem?” a voice interrogated from behind you. You turned to see a very short man in a red cape.
“Yeah, this guy hates blind people,” the knife-thrower said.
“No, I don't, I—” Dean’s gorgeous smile was doing nothing to help him in this situation.
“Hey, buddy, what's your problem?” the short man scowled.
“Nothing, it's just a little misunderstanding.”
“Little?! You son of a bitch!” The man went to charge Dean.
“No, no, no, no! I'm just— could somebody tell me where Mr. Cooper is?”
You and Sam snickered.
“Please?” you asked.
The short man looked up at you, and his gaze softened. “Sure, sweetheart, follow me.”
“Thanks,” you smiled, looking back at the boys.
Dean’s jaw was clenched for a reason you weren’t quite sure of. When you asked, he said, “Just don’t like anybody else callin’ you that.”
You smiled lopsidedly. He could be really sweet when he wanted to be.
Mr. Cooper met you at the door of his office and invited you in. “You three picked a hell of a time to join up. Take a seat.”
You looked at the available seating options, and Dean motioned for you to take the normal of the two chairs. You obliged, and Dean stood behind you, forcing Sam to sit in the obnoxious pink chair with a giant clown face on it. He sat on the chair hesitantly and refused to relax into it.
“We've got all kinds of local trouble,” Mr. Cooper continued.
“What do you mean?” you asked.
“Oh, a couple of folks got themselves murdered. Cops always seem to start here first. So, you three ever worked the circuit before?”
“Yes, sir, last year through Texas and Arkansas,” Sam responded.
“Doing what? Ride jockeys? Butcher? ANS men?”
“Yeah, it's, uh, little bit of everything, I guess.”
Mr. Cooper eyed your group strangely. “You three have never worked a show in your lives before, have you?”
“Nope,” Dean grinned. “But we really need the work. Oh, and uh, Sam here's got a thing for the bearded lady.”
“You see that picture? That's my daddy.” The showrunner pointed to a black and white picture on the wall of a man in a fedora in front of a ferris wheel.
“You guys could be twins,” you pointed out.
Mr. Cooper smiled thoughtfully. “He was in the business. Ran a freakshow. Till they outlawed them, most places. Apparently displaying the deformed isn't dignified. So most of the performers went from honest work to rotting in hospitals and asylums. That's progress, I guess. You see, this place, it's a refuge for outcasts. Always has been. For folks that don't fit in nowhere else.
"But you three? You should go to school. Find a couple of girls. Marry this one, maybe.” The man gestured to you. “Have two point five kids. Live regular.”
Dean went to say something, but Sam leaned forward, his eyes serious. “Sir? We don't want to go to school. And we don't want regular. We want this.”
You turned to him skeptically, as did Dean.
Mr. Cooper told the three of you to return in a few hours for training, which you were a little surprised by the suddenness of.
“I guess they really are desperate,” you said as the three of you left the carnival holding your uniforms to go change into.
“Were you serious?” Dean asked his brother.
“What?” Sam furrowed his brows at him.
“That whole, uh, I-don't-want-to-go-back-to-school thing. Were you just saying that to Cooper or were you, you know, saying it?” Dean pressed further at his younger brother’s hesitance. “Sam?”
“I don't know,” he replied.
“You don't know? I thought that once the demon was dead, and the fat lady sings ,that you were gonna take off, head back to Wussy State,” Dean deadpanned.
“I'm having second thoughts,” was all the younger brother answered with.
“Really?”
“Yeah. I think. Dad would have wanted me to stick with the job.”
Dean stopped Sam. “Since when do you give a damn what Dad wanted? You spent half your life doing exactly what he didn't want, Sam.”
“Since he died, okay? Do you have a problem with that?”
Dean’s voice hardened but remained sarcastic. “Naw, I don't have a problem at all.”
***
Later that day, you returned with the boys wearing a bright red “Cooper Carnival” jacket to begin your “janitorial job.” You were waiting for Sam or Dean to call you to tell you when to meet up with them for further investigation.
Before you had gotten a call from either, you noticed a little girl tugging on her mother’s jacket. “Mommy, look at the clown!” She pointed at something off in the distance.
You followed her line of sight only to see nothing.
“What clown?” the mother asked. “Come on, sweetie, come on.”
You called Sam immediately. “Hey, dude. I got something.”
***
The three of you then chose to stake out the family’s home that evening. Dean had just relayed to you how the blind man overheard him calling Sam about the case and had to tell him you three were writing a book about the supernatural.
“Dean, I cannot believe you told Papazian about the homicidal phantom clown,” Sam snorted.
“I told him an urban legend about a homicidal phantom clown. I never said it was real,” Dean argued. He pulled a gun and cocked it. You jumped over the seat and shoved his arm down. “What are you, nuts? You’re gonna get us busted.”
“Oh, and get this,” Dean continued. “I mentioned the Bunker Brother's Circus in '81 and their, uh, evil clown apocalypse? Guess what.”
“What?” you and Sam asked.
“Before Mr. Cooper owned Cooper Carnival, he worked for Bunker Brothers. He was their lot manager.”
“So you think whatever the spirit's attached to, Cooper just brought it with him?” Sam questioned.
“Something like that.” The older brother shook his head and sighed. “I can't believe we keep talking about clowns.”
***
You and the Winchesters had been stalking these poor people’s home for hours now. Well, you and Sam had, at least. Dean, on the other hand, was dozing in the front seat. You shook him awake when you saw a phantom clown appear at the front door.
“Dee, look,” you said.
He hummed and sat up, scrubbing a hand over his eyes. He turned and looked at you when he saw the girl leading the clown inside.
You jumped out of the car and went through the back entrance of the house. You hid around a corner down the hallway from where the little girl and the clown were.
“Wanna see Mommy and Daddy? They're upstairs,” you heard the girl say. At that moment, Sam leapt out and grabbed the young girl who screamed.
Simultaneously, you shot at the clown while Dean cocked his shotgun again. “Sam, watch out!” he yelled.
The clown leapt out the window, turning invisible as it shattered the glass of the front door.
The parents ran downstairs and began shouting at you and the brothers. You and the brothers dropped the girl and sprinted away, hearing the girl whine, “ Mommy, Daddy, they shot my clown!” as you headed out.
***
A while later, you and the brothers pulled off the side of the road and ditched the crappy van Dean had been driving you around in. You pulled the license plate off the back of the van and stuffed it in your duffel bag.
“You really think they saw our plates?” Sam asked you.
“I’m not taking any chances,” you said.
“I hate this fuckin’ thing anyway,” Dean grumbled. He began to lead you and his brother off the side of the road. “Well, one thing's for sure.”
“What?” you asked.
“We're not dealing with a spirit. I mean, that rock salt hit something solid,” Dean responded.
“Yeah, a person? Or maybe a creature that can make itself invisible?” Sam suggested.
“I don’t know, man, I’ve never heard of a creature like that. And it’s definitely not a person. I have no idea what the hell it could be,” you huffed.
“Did it say anything in Dad's journal?” Dean asked.
Sam cleared his throat and said, “Nope,” pulling out his cell phone.
“Who are you calling?” you asked him.
“Maybe Ellen or that guy Ash'll know something. Hey, you think, uh, you think Dad and Ellen ever had a thing?” Sam smirked.
“No way,” snorted Dean.
“Then why didn't he tell us about her?” retorted Sam.
“I don't know, maybe they had some sort of falling out,” the older brother shrugged.
“Yeah. You ever notice Dad had a falling out with just about everybody?”
You chuckled, but Dean simply nodded and looked at the floor.
Sam lowered his phone. “Well, don't get all maudlin on me, man.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean this ‘strong silent’ thing of yours, it's crap,” Sam answered.
Dean rolled his eyes. “Oh, god.”
“I'm over it. This isn't just anyone we're talking about, this is Dad. I know how you felt about the man.”
Dean started walking a little faster. “You know what, back off, alright? Just because I'm not caring and sharing like you want me to.”
Sam caught up with his brother easily. “No, no, no, that's not what this is about, Dean. I don't care how you deal with this. But you have to deal with it, man. Listen, I'm your brother, all right? I just want to make sure you're okay.”
“Dude, I'm okay. I'm okay, okay? I swear, the next person who asks me if I'm okay, I'm gonna start throwing punches. These are your issues, quit dumping them on me!” the older Winchester said gruffly.
“What are you talking about?” Sam questioned.
“I just think it's really interesting, this sudden obedience you have to Dad. It's like, oh, what would Dad want me to do? Sam, you spent your entire life slugging it out with that man. I mean, hell, you, you picked a fight with him the last time you ever saw him. And now that he's dead, now you want to make it right? Well, I'm sorry Sam, but you can't, it's too little, too late.”
“Why are you saying this to me?”
“Because I want you to be honest with yourself about this. I'm dealing with Dad's death! Are you?”
You looked between the boys and knew Dean was handing Sam a load of bullshit. However, you decided to stow that conversation until you could get him in private.
Sam swallowed harshly, looking upset. “I'm going to call Ellen.” Sam walked a little ahead of you and Dean on the phone.
While Sam spoke to Ellen, you walked beside Dean wordlessly.
“(Y/N), you don’t have to act like I’m a bomb about to go off,” Dean said.
You looked up at him. “I’m not. I just thought you’d appreciate a little silence instead of me asking you to ‘share and care,’ as you put it.”
He nodded. “Thanks.” He intertwined his fingers with yours, allowing you to support him in that simple way. He rubbed his thumb over yours and continued to walk next to you.
When Sam got off the phone, he turned back to you and his brother. “Wha—” He looked down at yours and Dean’s entwined hands and shook his head. “Nevermind. Rakshasa.”
“What's that?” Dean asked.
“Ellen's best guess. It's a race of ancient Hindu creatures. They appear in human form, they feed on human flesh, they can make themselves invisible, and they cannot enter a home without first being invited,” Sam explained.
“So they dress up like clowns, and the children invite 'em in. Why don't they just munch on the kids?”
“No idea. Not enough meat on the bones, maybe?”
“Well, that’s grotesque,” you noted.
“What else'd you find out?” Dean questioned.
“Well, apparently, Rakshasas live in squalor. They sleep on a bed of dead insects.” The younger brother grimaced.
“Nice,” you deadpanned.
“Yeah, and they have to feed a few times every twenty or thirty years. Slow metabolism, I guess.”
“Well, that makes sense. I mean, the Carnival today, the Bunker Brothers in '81—”
Sam cut his brother off. “Right. Probably more before that.”
“Who do we know that worked both shows?” You raised a brow.
“Cooper?” Sam replied.
“Yup.” You thought for a moment. “That picture of his father looked just like him. Maybe it was him.”
“Well, who knows how old he is?” Sam added.
“Ellen say how to kill him?” Dean asked.
“Legend goes, a dagger made of pure brass,” the brunet explained.
“I think I know where to get one of those.”
“Whoa, whoa,” you said. “Before we go stabbing Cooper, I wanna make damn sure it’s him.”
“Oh, you're such a stickler for details, sweetheart,” the older Winchester teased you. “Alright, I'll round up the blade, you two go check if Cooper's got bed bugs.”
***
You and Sam followed instructions and went to Mr. Cooper’s trailer. Dean had left the two of you to go find the blind man. Inside the trailer, you didn’t find any bugs he was nesting on. Just a plain, old twin mattress.
“What the hell are you doing in here?” a voice called from behind you.
You wheeled around to see Mr. Cooper. “Oh, hi! Just the guy I wanted to—”
“Save it,” Mr. Cooper told you. “Get the hell out of here. Oh, and uh, you’re fired.”
You nodded. “I figured.”
You and Sam dashed out of Mr. Cooper’s trailer and over to where Dean had told you he’d be. When you arrived at the blind man’s tent, Dean stumbled out of the door.
“Holy shit, hey,” you said after he’d scared you.
“Hey.”
“So, Cooper thinks we’re Peeping Toms, but it's not him,” Sam explained.
“Yeah, so I gathered. It's the blind guy. He's here somewhere.”
“Well, did you get the—”
“The brass blades? No. No, it's just been one of those days,” Dean sarcastically replied.
“I got an idea. Come on,” Sam said. You and Dean followed him to the funhouse. As you began to go through, the door slammed behind you between you and the brothers.
“Great!” you groaned.
“(Y/N)!” Dean yelled, banging on the door.
“(Y/N)! (Y/N/N), find the maze, okay?” Sam called to you.
“Okay!” you called back. You somehow stumbled your way through the maze and found the brothers. “Oh, thank god,” you sighed.
Sam broke a pipe off the organ a bit ahead of you.
“Where is it?” you asked.
“I don't know, I mean, shouldn't we see its clothes walking around?” Dean answered. A knife flew right past your head, clipping your ear. “Fuck!”
“(Y/N)!” Sam called. “Where is it?”
“I don’t know, Sam, the thing’s invisible!” You jumped up, reached above your head, and grabbed a lever. When you pulled it down, steam poured out of the vent.
“Sam, behind you! Behind you!” you heard Dean say. You began to run in the direction of Dean’s voice through the steam. When you arrived at him, there was a bloodied lump of clothes on the ground with a pipe sticking out from its chest. You turned to Dean who was pinned to the wall by two knives on his arm and helped him free himself.
“You okay?” he asked you.
You nodded as you pulled the last knife out of his jacket.
“I hate funhouses,” he grumbled.
***
You sat next to Dean at Ellen’s bar, and she laid a few beers in front of you. “You kids did a hell of a job.” Ellen nodded at the brothers. “Your dad 'd be proud.”
Sam half-smiled. “Thanks.” He got up to walk over to Ash, and Jo took his place.
“So,” she cleared her throat.
‘Damn, this girl is bold,’ you thought.
“So,” you said.
She ignored you and focused on Dean. “Am I gonna see you again?”
Dean turned to her, surprised. “Do you want to?”
“I wouldn't hate it.”
You rolled your eyes and got up from your chair, heading over to Sam and Ash. You could feel Dean’s eyes on you as you walked away. You knew you had no reason to treat Jo poorly; she was just a young girl with a crush. She had no idea that you and Dean were at all involved. You truly didn’t even know if you and Dean were legitimately involved to begin with.
You noted Ash’s bizarre-looking laptop with exposed wiring and his stack of papers. “Whatcha got there, Pinky?”
He snorted at you. “I’d say I’m a little more Brain than anything, but where ya been? Been waitin’ for ya.”
“What, Ellen didn’t tell you about the clowns?” you asked.
“Clowns? What the fuck—”
You snickered as Dean walked up behind you. “You got something for us, Ash?”
“You find the demon?” Sam questioned.
Ash shook his head. “It's nowhere around. At least, nowhere I can find. But if this fugly bastard raises his head, I'll know. I mean, I'm on it like Divine on dog dookie.”
You laughed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, any of those signs or omens appear, anywhere in the world, my rig'll go off. Like a fire alarm.”
Dean reached for his laptop. “Do you mind…?”
Ash gave him a look, and Dean pulled his hand back from the keyboard.
You smirked a little at the sight. “Ash, where did you learn to do all this?”
“M.I.T. Before I got bounced for... fighting.”
“No way!” you exclaimed.
He smirked at you and took a sip of his beer.
“Okay. Give us a call as soon as you know something?” Dean said, suggesting to you and Sam it was time to go.
“Si, si, compadre.” Ash took the beer Dean had placed down and chugged the rest of it.
You followed the brothers to the door. Ellen stopped you before you could leave. “Hey, listen— if you kids need a place to stay I've got a couple beds out back.”
“Thanks, but no. There's something I gotta finish,” Dean said.
***
“So, you get Jo’s number?” you asked back at Bobby’s junkyard. You sat cross-legged on the hood of one of the cars next to the Impala Dean was working on drinking a beer.
“What?” he asked incredulously. “Why would you think that?”
“Well, she obviously likes you. Kid was shamelessly flirting with you, so I just assumed—”
“No, (Y/N).” He put down the wrench he was holding. “I wouldn’t do that.”
“Well, okay, I just thought—”
He walked over to you and stood between your knees. He ran his hands up and down your thighs. “I’m telling you, I wouldn’t do that.”
“Dean, stop it. You don’t have to come over here and flirt with me just ‘cause I got jealous” you said.
“I’m not,” he assured you. “Look, we haven’t had a chance to talk about everything—”
“And I don’t need us to. I know you need time after your dad—”
“Would you let me finish?”
“Yeah, sorry,” you muttered.
“But I have no interest in Jo. She’s layin’ it on a little too thick for my taste,” he smirked.
"I don't know, Dean, your bar hookups always lay it on pretty thick," you reminded him.
"Yeah, guess you're right. But she's not you. So I'm not interested."
You rolled your eyes playfully. “Okay, well, I’m gonna go get some more beer. You want one?”
He nodded. “Yeah, sure.”
You headed back inside and passed Sam on the way. You found Bobby inside and began to update him on the situation with the brothers.
“I don’t know, Bobby, neither of them are doing well,” you said. “But it’s Dean I’m the most worried about.”
“Why’s that?” the older man asked.
“He’s just… bottling it up. He wouldn’t even let me sit next to him while he worked on his car for the first week we were here. He’s worrying me.”
“Sounds like Dean,” Bobby nodded. “But I think if anybody can get ‘im to open up, it’s gonna be you.”
You eyed him strangely. “What makes you say that?”
“He’s just… different with you. I think he puts up a bit of a front with Sam. But never with you.”
You nodded. “I’ll keep trying.” You grabbed two beers and again passed Sam as he came back into the house with tears in his eyes. As you approached Dean’s car, you heard slamming metal on metal and Dean grunting. You quickened your step to get to him, holding a beer in each hand. When you arrived, you saw him hitting the Impala’s trunk with a crowbar over and over again.
“Dean, what the f—”
He looked up at you and fought back tears. You put the beers on the car behind you and slowly approached him. You opened your arms to him and wrapped them around his torso, and he finally responded by burying his face in your hair. You could feel him still trying to stifle his tears, but it was clear he was unsuccessful. You let him hug you for as long as he needed to.

I often think about the fact that Dean has read John's journal, cover to cover, countless times.
How he has it in plain writing right there on the page that the only time John was ever proud of him was when he was killing, fighting, scamming, hustling; when he did as he was told without question; when he had meaningless flings with random women.
How even when he was 24, his father still called him kid, called him boy. How no amount of projecting the persona required of him was enough for John to truly think of him as a man.
Dean read everything his father thought of him and worked harder to play the part in the hope that he might be good enough to love.
fuck john winchester
id under tag
Keep reading
#yes yes i know the journals are fringe canon#but i do think if we removed the ghostfacers effect from spn the tv show and saw the journal up close for real it'd look pretty similar#Sam read everything as well but his resentment of John and his assumption that Dean was the favored son#meant that he believed the spin#believed that the version of Dean that he worked to be for John's benefit was the real thing#which is why he's so confident in assuming Dean is just angling for a hook up when he is legitimately worried about the victims of the week#''Who are you and what have you done with my brother?'' Sam bud you simply have no idea who your brother is hope that helps#y'know also... cas read the journal as well and very diplomatically did not comment on anything except for the penmanship#''your father.......... beautiful handwriting''#the pause between those two thoughts says a lot imo#like he was going to say something else but redirected because he realized that saying ''your father had no idea how wonderful you are''#would probably not go well#like ''welp better just say something else but all my thoughts on john winchester are deeply negative... uh... handwriting. that works.''#and not to bring the confession into this but it doesn't escape my notice that a lot of how john views dean falls under the same umbrella#as how their enemies see him :)))))))#ANYWAY#i probably have a whole essay's worth of thoughts on this tbh but i need to go have breakfast#shocked i managed to verbalize this much before caffeine tbh#on some level i am always deanposting#fandom: supernatural#meta adjacent#other people's meta

Sam has abandonment issues just as bad or worse than Dean's and they have a massive impact on how he behaves at various points. There's a period of the Winchester's childhoods we learn about in 7.03 and 11.08, where Sam was old enough for John to feel okay about leaving him alone by himself for days, and Dean was old enough that John wanted him hunting with him sometimes. In the same way that Dean's parentification leads to a warped, negative self-image leading into his adulthood, Sam's experience with silence does the same. Sam remembers two figures walking out of the motel room door and leaving him behind. Sam remembers silence for days stuck in a room in the aftermath, waiting for the phone to ring. Sam can't help but feel punished by the silence. If he was good enough, they would have brought him along. He wouldn't be alone.

thinking about a version of supernatural in which john is never shown. his echo and looming shadow still impacts the narrative and brothers the same, but we as the audience never see him. he exists only in the winchester mythos, in stories, in legend, in scripture. the one true god of the narrative, the forever absent father, a holy ghost. he seeps into the negative space of the narrative and he haunts his children all the same, but if there was ever one thing the show should have ever held as too holy for the eyes of the audience, it should have been the face of the father god.
#supernatural#spn#john winchester#for the record i don't think we ever should have seen chuck either but that is a different post#started writing this in the notes of someone else's shit and i was like ok get a room

This being the original way the hug was scripted in 12x01 is, in my opinion, damning evidence in support of bisexual Dean Winchester.
In every other circumstance, I would say Dean breaking the hug and saying “boundaries” is way out of character but in this very specific instance, it’s in character. Why? Because he only does this after Mary makes a sly comment that implies they’re more than friends.
Her comment “good friend” feels targeted and maybe even like an attack to Dean, who is either in denial about his feelings towards Cas or is aware and doesn’t act on them (for various reasons).
He just got his mother back and he’s on extremely unsure ground. His mother hasn’t been in his life since he was 4 and he doesn’t really know anything about her. He doesn’t know how she feels about gay people and he doesn’t know how she feels about him.
It’s also even more evidence that Dean grew up with a family where men showing affection was uncommon and probably even wrong. That HE was wrong for wanting to show affection. Mary comes from the same kind of family and he knows it. Dean hasn’t been around a family member he loves that believes those kinds of things pretty much since John died. So instinctively, when his mother comes back and makes a comment like that, the affection he’s grown to allow himself to show instinctively gets pulled back inside the second she says something.
So he pushes Cas away and pretends like they’ve ever had “boundaries” past season 4 because the comment catches him off guard and he can’t risk his mother formulating negative opinions about him because she could leave again.
If they had gone this route, I think Dean would’ve felt like shit about it immediately and berated himself for having that reaction. He would’ve made sure to find Cas later when he’s alone to give him a proper hug.
#in summary#her comment triggers him#and that’s why he breaks the hug#not because he doesn’t want to hug Cas#he definitely does#spn#supernatural#destiel#castiel#dean winchester#deancas#dean x cas#cas x dean#Mary Winchester#bi dean winchester#destiel meta#12x01 meta#spn 12x01#spn meta

why “the Winchesters” feels like fanfiction
I don’t mean this in a negative way but it feels like fic and here’s why:
Mary, John, Carlos, Lata, and Ada (and others to an extent) are 100% found family and an actual ensemble. in Supernatural, family didn’t end in blood but the brothers were the Main Characters and they’d known Bobby since before the start of the show. in the Winchesters, everyone who is working together is doing it because they choose to, and while everyone but John has history together, they fall into a TV Show Ensemble Cast immediately and John’s newness persists only for exposition purposes
because they’re all choosing to work together, they’re all nice to each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt, and generally assume everyone has the same goals and wants to be there and is doing the work
even though it’s the 70s and they don’t have cell phones, they use CB radios, pay phones, and walkies to constantly keep each other updated. the capacity to communicate is almost never an impediment. even when Carlos is trapped in a shadow dimension and Lata is in the house, they can hear each other yelling!
the main group doesn’t hide info from each other. sure, John and Mary briefly attempt to hide their relationship, and Lata has a Deep Dark Secret she hasn’t told anyone before she put on the bracelet. but when it comes to hunting, they are all info all the time. Ada even shares the risk to her soul! can you imagine someone volunteering that on SPN?! even John’s mom knows about the Akreda and doesn’t for a moment think it’s at all possible John is a murderer! I guess this one is more fanon-vibe than fic, lots of fics are based on people withholding crucial info, but the “SPN but with healthier communication” thing is such a fandom concept
Dean hates that he died
someone actually puts in a Led Zeppelin tape and it plays Led Zeppelin
the Impala is a CARDIS
John Winchester decides to get therapy
JOHN WINCHESTER DECIDES TO GET THERAPY
#the winchesters#spnwin#the winchesters spoilers#spoilers#spnwin spoilers#supernatural#spn#they could've so easily (and lazily) used the 'oh they don't have cell phones' thing as an excuse for all kinds of bs#but the only times people are unreachable is when they'd be unreachable in a contemporary setting too!#also I know there are plenty of times people shared similar kinds of info on SPN to some extent#like yes s5 Dean knew the plan was for Sam to say Yes etc#but it never felt as voluntarily offered as it doesn on the winchesters#PS: I did not pay close attention to the Winchesters to be honest#I was cleaning while I watched it and I read half a romance novel while watching it

rolling with the idea that every one of john winchester's kids are fated vessels for the archangels, i would like to propose adam being raphael's vessel.
based on true religion, raphael is an angel of healing and protection. his name means "god has healed", and he is the patron saint of medical workers. he is rooted in health and healing, and so is adam. beyond the obvious connection of raphael being a patron saint of medical workers and adam wanting to become a doctor, adam to his core is a healer. he healed himself; a human who has the strength to survive being locked in a cage in hell for 1200 years is not one who rests in self-destruction. he also healed michael. not physically, but mentally. an archangel like michael, who for his whole life has had immeasurable amount of control over heaven and earth, being locked away for millennia with absolutely nothing to do is bound to break mentally. and you could argue michael did in some ways, but in no ways specifically negative. adam kept michael sane, grounded, in the cage by his presence alone. they clearly communicated in the cage, as they came to an "agreement" about who can control their body, and i think the humanity adam brought into the cage is what kept michael from cracking, whether intentional or not.
also, in regard to the "protection" that raphael reins over, adam seems to resemble this. while we get few canonical goals and traits for adam, one is that he cares and is protective of his mother. he wants to become a doctor to pay back and care for his mom just like she did him. he hates his dad, john winchester, not just because of what john did to him, but for how john treated his mother. adam even shows some protection over michael when he takes over the body in 15x08 when michael starts becoming erratic and angry. he tells the winchesters to "give it a rest" when they upset michael, and while he phrases it in a way that seems to protect the winchesters from michael, i think the opposite is true as well. adam doesn't want michael lashing out for his own benefit and safety as much as for the winchesters.
and in a more canon sense, raphael's devotion to michael is representative to adam's. while never explicitly said, raphael stayed with michael in heaven even when raphael ceased to have faith in their father. he believed in his brother even when he didn't believe in his goal. adam treats michael a similar way. it’s clear in 15x08 that michael and adam have talked about michael’s father a few times before, judging by adam’s exasperation and the lack of overall anger michael expresses towards adam's opinions about god (while yes michael shows anger, he's an archangel. if michael was truly that angry adam would not be able to express his opinion like that). adam is willing to stand by michael's side, defend him, heal him, be "his guide", even though he doesn't believe in the same goals as michael. adam is devoted to michael, much like raphael was, not because of michael's endgame or unchecked loyalty, but simply because he is michael. he's someone they both love.
and one thing less michael-related and more in line with how sam, dean, and adam are all fated vessels for lucifer, michael, and raphael. in relation to their father, dean, like michael, was devoted to his dad. unending loyalty and a willingness to look over any mistake. they both are lost without their fathers, for better or for worse. sam, like lucifer, once had faith in his dad. there was a time for both of them where they were just as devoted to their fathers as their brothers were, but they both lost it along the way. they both started questioning their dads and opening themselves up to new viewpoints that directly disobeyed their dads' wishes. and in doing so, they both were disowned. adam, like raphael, was an easily forgettable child. they both were never the main focus of their fathers' plans, and because of this they both lost faith in their dads. maybe they didn't completely despise their fathers, but they had no reason to really care for them.
this topic also opens up a can of worms. does michael see raphael in adam? is that why he was more accepting towards him in the cage then he would've been towards most other humans, especially sam or dean? did he find normality in adam in the early days of the cage because of how his soul seemed to resemble his brother's?
#i love long posts#sorry this is so long#now the question is whos gabriel#gabriel might just be an enigma tbh no one can outdo him#i love you adam milligan#adam milligan#adam spn#michael spn#michael supernatural#midam#raphael supernatural#supernatural#spn

PART X
Bobby fiddled around with the unfinished box when, bingo, it popped open, revealing a bunch of rolled papers inside. He crossed to the garage and fired up a printer, making copies of the documents then returned everything to its original position because John would notice if anything were misplaced. Heading back to his room, Bobby noticed light still coming from underneath the boy's door and lightly rapped it before opening it.
The elder brother was spooning his mate from behind, which made sense since Bobby knew from personal experience that lying on bruised ribs dulled the pain. However, it was difficult for the man to process why his brother was sleeping snugly against her front, his fingers twined with Dean's, resting on her hip.
****
Bobby is jerked out of his troubled sleep by a truck engine rumbling to life. Moving the window, he sees the taillights as John's GMC crunches over the gravel driveway toward the gate. Cursing obscenities in multiple languages, he rushes downstairs and pivots toward the front door when a voice calls out, "Denver Pyle aware you stole his underwear?"
Doubling back, he finds Dean sitting at the kitchen table with a smirk, drinking coffee. "Don't think you're too big to be taken to the woodshed, boy." Bobby chastised with as much dignity as he could muster in his red flannel long johns, walking to the stove to pour himself a cup from the old blue enamel pot. Ignoring the other man's continued smirk sat down across from him. "Good to see your eyes back to normal. Ready to tell me what that was about last night?"
That sobered Dean up.
He inquired how much Bobby knew about everything, and the Beta was honest about what he'd been told and felt that familiar pang of resentment toward John, watching Dean retreat into himself, knowing self-recrimination was nothing new for him.
"Seeing it's too early to get breakfast from Micky D's, I'm guessing John's found somewhere else to be." The young Alpha shrugged, saying it is what it is, and fiddled with his mug. "Anyway, I gotta keep my nose clean so Sammy doesn't end up in CYF custody. And seeing how you're my warden, that's the parole officer we're supposed to meet today." Dean slid a piece of paper over with his parole officer's info. "Is there anything else I should know before seeing them?" Dean shook his head negatively. Bobby braced himself, knowing the next thing coming out of his mouth would raise the Alpha's hackles.
"Couldn't help noticing number girl shivering in those hand-me-downs last night, and Sam needs some warmer clothes for school; going to get damn cold before too much longer." Deans features shifted, "Bobby, it's my responsibility to provide. I'll get what they need after I find a job."
"Looks like John forgot a few details. Part of the agreement is you'll work for me, too. But if that's how you want to do things, I've got no problem docking your paycheck in reimbursement." After rinsing his mug, the older hunter crossed his arms, leaning against the counter, and decided to bring up what he saw last night.
"Considering we have an Omega in the house, I want to get a few things straight,. You boys have always been close, and don’t care if you still share a room, but don't take me for stupid." A flash of oh crap crosses Dean's features. "And I want to be clear: she's your property. It'll be your decision how to handle situations when they arise. Where Sam is concerned, there'd better not be any fighting over her 'cause I'm not getting in the middle of you two. And give me a heads up before you go into a rut 'cause that's another thing I'm not going to deal with either."
After getting a yes sir, Bobby heads back upstairs to get dressed when he runs into Sam, who asks why he is dressed like Uncle Jessie makes the Beta grumble; this is gonna be a long six months.
Bobby once again wonders where god got their twisted sense of humor.
The building Dean's parole officer directed them to look like a country feed store from the outside. Inside, that was a different story.
Bobby had learned a few things about people's kinks over the years, but this place shocked the seasoned hunter when a bubbly voice that didn't match the decor called out, "Good afternoon, gentlemen. What can I help you with today?"
Bobby watches Dean lean against the glass counter, showcasing a variety of erotic toys, turns on the charm he's mastered at a young age, turning the female Beta into goo while explaining he needs the necessities for his recently acquired Omega.
The shop assistant leaned towards him, putting her ample bosom on display. "We carry all the approved items from the O divisions. But if you're interested in something more adventurous, we have a certified craftsman who does custom designs." Bobby slaps the list they'd compiled on the counter, "We just need this stuff."
The assistant does a quick read and, within minutes, has almost everything sitting on the counter. "Most of our customers prefer to custom order outfits for their O. Let me show you what we have in store; see if any strikes your fancy."
Exaggeratedly swaying her hips, she heads toward the clothes section, where Bobby picks up a shirt and says, "This stuff makes the lingerie I gave my wife look conservative." Dean nodded toward him and inquired. "Do you have anything not so revealing for an O about his height?" The assistant looked confused. "Are you kidding?" Dean shook his head, and her attitude changed. "If this is some prank, you can leave, or I'm calling the cops."
Bobby intervenes, and Dean can hear the testy assistant's insolent remark and Bobby's very Bobby response as he walks out of the store. Unlocking the Impala, Dean opens the rear door and helps the Omega out. As they enter the store, the manager is now arguing with Bobby. "O's are not that big; it's a biological impossibility!" Bobby replies, "Oh yeah," and peers around them, "Tell that to her!"
Dean sat a bowl of spaghetti covered in meat sauce and salad he'd made to appease Sam in the middle of the table, then went to pull the cheesy garlic bread from the broiler. "Damn, that smells good," Bobby said coming from the library with Sam in tow, and sat in their usual spots at the kitchen table.
Reaching for a piece of bread, Bobby asked, "Isn't your girl hungry?" Sam's eyes cut to his brother, waiting to see how he'd answer, and watched Bobby's narrow at Dean's casual response, knowing he was concealing something.
"She won't touch the stuff Dad bought, so Dean's been sneaking her food, but the only thing she'll take is broth." Sam yelped and kicked his brother back. "This true, boy?" Dean affirmed that he had, and Bobby wiped his mouth. "Show me the stuff John got."
Retrieving a bag resembling dry dog food Bobby opened it frowning, "This isn't fit to feed a hog, let alone a person! Why'd he get this crap?"
"It's on the list of approved nourishment."
Bobby sighed, "As long as you're in my house, we all will eat like other families."
Completing more paperwork made Dean gnaw on the end of the pen because the bureaucracy involved in owning an Omega annoyed the Alpha after spending most of his life trying to stay off the government radar. A cough drew his attention, and he saw the Omega shivering where she knelt on the tiled floor.
"Fuck this," Dean growled, tossing the clipboard aside, got up, and getting her up off the floor, removed his jacket and wrapped it around her before helping her sit in the chair next to his.
Returning the clipboard, Dean drew the receptionist's ire and let them know he doesn't give a shit about their rules before sitting down, glaring. He continued until they were called and slowly made their way to an examination room at the far end of the clinic, where the doctor Bobby knew was already waiting.
"Hello, I'm Dr. Stevenson. Could you please have her remove the coat and sit on the table? I've looked over the other clinic's paperwork. Are there any other issues you're concerned about?" Dean tells them about her not eating and the constant pain she seems to be in, even with the substantial pain reliever being given. "Let me do another examination, see if something got missed."
The doctor asks the O to indicate pain on a scale of one to ten, starting at her feet and working up her body. They are pleased that most reactions are under five until they touch her neck, and she throws herself off the table. "Believe we found the source," the doctor comments. They ask Dean to remove the collar, and he admits not knowing how it made them frown.
Dean helps the trembling O back up as the doctor pulls out a penlight and shines it over the collar, finding hidden stitching and their expression changes.
"What's wrong?"
"I haven't seen one of these since my residency. I'll find something to cut the leather while you hold her." Dean drew the O flush against him and gently guided her face into his neck, releasing calming pheromones to relax her.
Dr. Stevenson slid surgical scissors under the ties, quickly sniping, explaining the original high collars were redesigned for autoerotic asphyxiation. Their voice fades out as Dean feels like he's having needles pulling out from under the skin of his neck when she drops. "I was expecting that. Let's get the O back on the table."
The doctor continues talking as they slowly remove it, "And this is why they're outlawed," stepping back allows Dean to see deep purple bruises with black depressions stripping the unconscious O's neck.

I don't mean if you think the character is written well or is interesting. More like, does he bring negative/positive/varied emotions to you when he's on screen? I know some people find the character intriguing, but hate his guts! And some people feel positively about him but are not as passionate or invested in it.
If your father passed, answer with what kind of relationship you had with him.
Answer the best you can, and only pick the last option if you truly cannot fit yourself into one of the first nine options. Thanks!

how do you think the winchester brothers would treat sister winchester if she was alt? like goth/emo/scene lol- like i would assume that they wouldn’t mind that much HOWEVER whenever someone feels the need to comment on how she dresses or does her makeup they IMMEDIATELY shut them down hahaha (not a request, im just curious to hear your thoughts :D)
I’m not that familiar with some of this slang (like alt or scene) but I’ll try to answer this lol 😅. I’m just gonna go with goth (which I’m also not an expert on so if I say anything wrong I’m sorry and please correct me) (ps I included John in this just for fun)—
Since the Winchesters don’t really go shopping much, they just hand down whatever thrift store flannels they buy, she’d start out her goth tendencies by just only wearing the black flannels that Sam and Dean give her. She scrapes up whatever money she can get hustling pool, and uses it to get more stuff—more clothes to match her style, accessories, makeup, that kinda stuff.
John considers reprimanding her at first—they don’t have a lot of money, after all, and they have to focus on necessities—but he ultimately decides that she earned the money, so she can spend it how she wants, but he also occasionally warns her not to buy too much, both because of money issues and because “the Impala only has so much space”. Despite his money worries, there is no way he’s gonna let anyone make fun of his little girl for what she wears. The first time someone tried, he laid into them immediately. However, the next time, John hung back just a little, ready to intervene if needed but wanting to see his kid handle herself. And boy she did—she told the guy off so hard, even using some of the words her dad had said last time; John is really proud of her, and when the guy gets a little aggressive because he doesn’t appreciate being told off, John is right there, threatening him with some pretty unspeakable things if the guy lays a hand on his kid.
Dean isn’t a huge fan of the look, but he’s very “to each their own.” He might tease her occasionally, but not cruelly, and not any more than he teases Sam about his hair. However, if anyone else has anything negative to say about his baby sister, he jumps at them, ready to throw hands at an instant.
Sam is just glad that his little sister found her own style—she wasn’t just copying him, or Dean, or John. So while Dean is busy telling off anyone that makes fun of her, Sam is usually reassuring her that she looks great, and that her style is totally ok, and she can wear whatever she wants no matter what anyone says.
She knows this already, but it’s always nice to hear.

While we’re I’llJustWaitHereThen.mp3 for Act Two of The Winchesters -or rather thee reboot, which should be known for the extra high bar it’s gained this year- I’d like us to round off 2023 considering a song choice from the finale I haven’t seen discussed, but illuminates Dean’s path going forward.
The moment Dean, Jack, Bobby, and Baby disappear, “One of These Things First” by Nick Drake plays. For the curious, Nick Drake is ingrained in the cultural consciousness as a precursor to the likes of Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith for his musical talent, melancholic lyrics drawn from a troubled life, and (at 26, one year too young for the original 27 Club of Jimi Janis Jim Morrison) untimely tragic death.
Such allusions seem all too pertinent to our not-so-Mystery Man who’d also sooner burn out than fade away, huh? But first and foremost, “One of These Things First” here evokes the multiverse reveal - playing over scenes of Lata helping restore Ada’s soul and Mary and Samuel parting. The characters could be any number of things, but as Mary says of her possible alternate selves, “I’m gonna make my own”; with the meta knowledge that Dean is “picking the music” non-diegetically, this track’s relevance to his own life (and death) becomes apparent.
I could have been a sailor, could have been a cook A real live lover, could have been a book
From the start we see well-chosen lyrics for thee episode of Dean “Hello Sailor” Winchester; it goes without saying, here and in the series’ deafeningly loud negative space, how Dean’s desire to be “a real live lover” drives his search for happy endings in this Supernatural Romance. Genius.com notes that “a book” in Nick Drake’s metaphor means “someone who spent their time gaining knowledge about the world”; leaving them his own book, evidently a record of Supernatural’s main events and likely intended as a setup for revelations about his postseries shenanigans, Dean becomes their absent guide opposite John’s original series role through his journal.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock
Following lyrics about metaphorical objects also evoke Dean’s role as a guide - but given his view that “I think I did” find a model for his found family’s happiness in them, it goes both ways (and so does he).
I could be here and now I would be, I should be, but how?
These last few lyrics played in the episode call to mind the final undying core of Dean’s self-doubt: his inability to move on, like so many restless spirits parallel him. Dean’s sensation that he is not “here and now,” being unstuck in time and lamenting that he’s “already dead,” highlights his distance from the lead characters and their sense of closure - as does his use of the James Hetfield alias as a false name, dodging the central question of Who You Are. For all his heroism, Dean’s role as the central mystery never fully solved implicates him as the haunting force derailing another story into his own as much as any reality-warping trauma parasites.
Minding all these exhortations to mind the gap, it’s absolutely relevant that the episode omits a second verse centering on romantic longings. (It wouldn’t be the first time - “So on your woman and your child/You release your bitterness,” anyone?)
I could have been your pillar, could have been your door I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed for more I could have been your statue, could have been your friend A whole long lifetime could have been the end
Mary and Samuel’s exchange (“Be safe out there” “I love you too, kiddo”) continues the theme of Just Saying It before any goodbye - acknowledging you can say “I love you” without saying it and be understood. But apropos of everything, the romantic pair never exchanges what they promise they will on reuniting - at once begging the same question as Dean’s aborted love confession(s) to Cas (indicting the heteronormative double standard that makes the answer “obvious” here) and keeping their promise of no goodbyes, meaning “Ramble On” with its tale of a romantic reunion can only refer to one yet to come.
So with Dean left to learn that death is no goodbye for him either, The Winchesters reaffirms Supernatural’s humanistic heart: the conviction that -whether for great artists we romanticize or fictional characters representing our values- we need not mythologize and bemoan death as “robbing” the world of someone’s promise at the expense of affirming the intrinsically worthy human life as they are now and forever (we will all live forever no matter how dead we may sometimes seem to be). A life cut tragically short was still a life worth living, and its legacy one worth carrying on. And I can think of no truth more apt from the series cut short at 13 traxx we will nevertheless replay and remix and resonate with for years to come.
As we ramble on to future installments, I reiterate: “If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you?” “I followed my heart. I don’t think that’s ever a mistake.”

am I the only one who thinks the very existence of crossroad demons in canon makes it clear that selling your soul for someone else is not even something that's particularly unhinged? they have people out there making demon deals for far less than bringing a family member back from the dead lol it's just that demons are very invested in fucking with the winchesters and poking at dean's perceived neediness and vulnerability and his and sam's codependency. maybe it's just terminal deangirlism but I have never really bought into him being particularly needy or clingy I think he's baseline normal but everyone else acts like he's smothering them
Context
Copying my tags also:
Dean's main way of saving Sam is by sacrificing himself? And I think a lot of that reflects Dean's struggles with depression and suicidal ideation. Sam isn't the only one Dean has been shown to be willing to sacrifice himself for when he was at a low point. He was ready to die for Layla in 1.12 and he was ready to die in 13.05. Both emotional low points where he was struggling with his own sense of worth. 2.22 is a low point Dean has been building to all season. His worsening depression is very clear. 9.01 is simply... severely misinterpreted in terms of Dean's perspective. He risks his life every day. He stood between max and his mom in 1.14 also with a gun pointed at his chest
And yeah people in SPN make demon deals a lot. Sam says he tried to make a demon deal to get Dean back in 4.01, but no demon would deal. He also tried to re-open the Devil's Gate from 2.22 (which would let out hundreds of demons yet again to wreak havoc on the world). John made a demon deal to save Dean's life, and many fans don't even think he cares about Dean. Bobby made one, Bela made one, etc.
I could go through the whole show to prove Dean being a Needy and Clingy and Smothering person simply is not accurate... or, because I'm tired of making up people's arguments for them and proving a negative by going through a whole show is very annoying (and I am technically already doing that very extensively through a series of searchable tags), I could just say fans who think this way are incorrect.
If they don't think they are, they're welcome to give me examples of Dean actually being a uniquely horribly needy and clingy and desperate and demanding person who forces people to stay with him forever and ever because he doesn't care what they want and desperately wants to control their lives. I've certainly seen people try to make the argument before, but without fail each time they point to examples that are 1) not even remotely unique to Dean (and he's usually the weakest example and I can think of multiple for other characters showing behavior that is objectively more extreme) 2) presented in an intentionally misleading or mind-blowingly out of context manner 3) woefully (and often rather deliberately) mischaracterizes Dean's motivations.
Anyway, feel free to stream related tags I track:

consider the rakshasa in 2x02 as an allegory for john.
he's just died, and this episode is about sam and dean's grief, as well as their struggles as they try to move on from his death. the circus itself represents hunters and the hunter society they've just newly discovered (also in this exact episode), and the rakshasa is a monster hiding within that culture of misfits. much of 2x02 is from dean's perspective, and dean has just come to view his father in a violently negative light (consider the end of the episode, where he destroys the impala in order to symbolically hurt john).
so the rakshasa as john. the monster can turn invisible, similar to how john's presence in the narrative is oppressively absent: in season 1 he's missing, and now in season 2 he's dead. yet he's always present in spirit, even though sam and dean can't see him. he's an invisible force weighing down on them, there yet not.
the rakshasa also preys on children. this could be symbolic of the way sam and dean are rather emotionally immature, frozen in time due to the abuse they suffered as kids. indeed when children are featured as guest stars in an episode, they act as allegories for dean (see 1x03 and 1x18). the same thing is true for teenagers, who are typically paralleled with sam (see 1x05 and 1x08)—this present, if sparse, theming could indicate the emotional states of the brothers, or the points in their respective lives which have shaped them most strongly: dean lacks a childhood because he was forced to grow up too fast and therefore imprints on children, and sam is stuck a rebellious teenager, allowed to grow into adolescence due to being sheltered but perhaps stunted in growth as he becomes aware of the world around him and his own situation, and as he develops a lasting resentment toward john. therefore, the invisible monster john winchester is preying on sam and dean, both in their literal childhood and as their present-day selves, trapped in a state of immaturity due to a life of abuse and neglect.
i also like the little detail that the rakshasa lives in squalor, as this can be compared to the motel rooms and the car that sam and dean grew up in: their constant instability and run-down, cheap housing that sheltered them their whole lives. it's a stark difference from the comfort of a stable home, and combined with the nomadic lifestyle of a circus, there is a very striking parallel between the rakshasa's life and the life that john forced his children into.
(an interesting aside, but the rakshasa feeds in 20-30 year cycles, which is quite similar to the cycle azazel appears to be working with to create new generations of special children, which is around 23 years. not sure if this is intentionally drawing a parallel between azazel and john, but i wouldn't be surprised given the tangled-up, impossible web they exist in together.)
in the end, sam is the one who kills the rakshaka, as dean has been immobilized by it (the imagery recalling that of 1x22, where dean is immobilized by an azazel who looks like john; additionally, one can compare the emotional arc dean is suffering at the moment, metaphorically paralyzed by john's final wish and his inability to act on his own because he has spent his whole life a soldier to john's instruction). if the rakshasa is john, then it implies that sam will ultimately be the one to save dean from his conflict, the one to free him of his paralysis—and he does in 2x09, when dean embraces his codependent relationship with his brother, abandons his father, and throws down his gun to choose sam as his guide and moral center. the conflict of croatoan is all about dean finally coming to terms with the choice he's been given and making his decision: sam, above all else. and so sam is the one who saves him and propels him forward into the rest of the season, with his head on straight and his mind clear of distractions. sam above all else, no matter what, no nuance. just like here, where sam frees dean of the rakshasa's literal binding, sam too frees dean of john's emotional binding.
#supernatural#2.02#john winchester#sam#dean#literally i think about this once a week sorry for not being normal#2.02 is an interesting episode. it does so much in such a short span of time. i have so much to say about it#spn2#spn posting#.txt#i've returned from my insanely long vacation and now i can write essays again. wahoo

Summary: Cas has been getting progressively worried about Dean’s drinking for a while but mentioning it only causes tension in their marriage. The sudden death of Dean’s father brings everything to the breaking point. After a particularly bad fight, his husband seeks solace in whiskey and flirty women in the aftermath. When Cas finds out, he decides he’s had his fill, packs his bags, and leaves. Sam lives in California and has built a career as a well respected addictions counselor. When Cas calls to tell him that Dean is missing on a bender and their marriage is likely over, he drops everything to come to Kansas to find his brother. Dean clearly needs help. Sam convinces him to go with him to California and go through a rehab program. Dean only agrees because Cas refuses to have anything to do with him unless he stops drinking permanently. If he can't, their marriage is finished. Along the way, Sam and Dean discover that their father left them with more than just painful memories of a traumatic childhood. Their half-brother Adam might be exactly who they need to help pull all the fractured pieces together. Cas is giving Dean one last chance to turn things around. Nothing is easy, but maybe it’s still worth fighting for.
Excerpt: “You know the only difference that would have made was that you would be as miserable as he was.” Cas grabbed both of their toothbrushes and toothpaste from the ensuite bathroom, tossing Dean’s his way. “I could’ve tried harder to get him to quit, go to rehab or something.” The toiletries went in the bag with some deodorant, a flannel, and some denim. He shot Cas a dirty look when he heard him huff in exasperation. “How many times did you ask him to quit? Remember when Sam flew in for an intervention? He’s a professional addictions counselor and the only thing that happened was that Sam flew home with a black eye and a refusal to ever come back.” “That’s just because they’re too much alike and can’t stop themselves from fighting.” Dean was starting to raise his voice. Cas wasn’t having any of it. “No,” he knew he sounded snarky as shit but was so very tired of having the same argument about John Winchester’s parenting skills. “It’s because your father is a narcissistic asshole with undiagnosed mental health issues that he self-medicates with whiskey.” Dean walked around the bed to where Cas was and grabbed his arm. The grip wasn’t rough but it wasn’t gentle either. His green eyes were anguished and pleading. “Don’t say that, he could be dying right now.” Somewhere deep down Cas knew he should be feeling guilty about just how little empathy he had for John right then. He’d feel more compassion for a complete stranger than he did for the man who had hurt Dean again and again, both as a child and as an adult. He felt a small flash of resentment at having to defend Dean from his own negative thinking. “It was always going to be this way with him, Dean. Every counselor you’ve ever had has told you the same thing for years. You are not responsible for fixing him. Don’t kill yourself trying to be accepted by someone who doesn’t even deserve you.”
