Pathetic. #problemnyatic thoughts #steven universe". End caption.]
the steven universe hate is insane bc people are (or at least were) more upset that fictional war criminals got fictional hugs than they recognize that it singlehandedly advanced queer rep in children's media by lightyears and then straight up ate heavy retaliation for the nerve.
It does have real flaws that are worth discussing, but it also put their male protagonist in dresses and skirts and played it straight and even empowering, they aired a lesbian wedding on television, it was a genuinely queer, genuinely diverse piece of media through and through. It did a lot of real good for the real world.
But also the fictional characters caused fictional harm to other fictional characters, and didn't get an onscreen firing squad sentence. So, you know, it's basically ontologically evil in real life.
#not gonna lie: the (anti-)fandom surrounding steven universe was a huge part of the reason i couldn't give it a shot for a long time#i am finally catching up with it 10 years after the fact and it's SO FUCKING GOOD. astonishingly entertaining as an adult#(mostly because it's absolutely saturated with references to media that the actual kids in the audience probably wouldn't recognize)#i'm just starting S2 and so far there have been a few blunders#(like garnet and dr maheswaran bonding over emotionally abusing their kids and it being played off as an end-of-episode joke)#(they probably had to have ''family friendly values'' to counterbalance how incredibly gay that episode was to the execs though)#but for the most part extremely and consistently solid#i was a little annoyed that everyone turned ''sneeple'' into 'just' a meme given that the entire episode is ''ronaldo is becoming a nazi''#and like. they handled the issue of online fascism extremely well before the fucking mainstream media knew how to handle it!!#when a goddamn kids show does a better job of telling people how to spot when they're being radicalized online than the actual media... wow#casual ableism // (the word 'insane' in original post)#steven universe#antis#media literacy#media criticism#homophobia#transphobia#hays code#censorship#animation#television#puritanism#purity culture
