No bc I'm so mad rn I usually post my rants on ig stories but I need the tumblrites to tell me if I'm crazy or what. Jwcc/ct spoilers WHATEVER
First of all I want to preface this by saying that this is just my opinion on the matter, I'm not saying your headcanons are "wrong" or whatever tf, it's a kids cartoon where they unironically use terms like "fam". You can play with the characters however you'd like.
That being said, this is why TO ME it does not makes sense for Ben to be anything other than gay. Again, if you think he's bi or straight or anything else that's cool. I'm also leaning towards the opinion that he does actually have a girlfriend. I don't think the shows gonna pull a 180 on it because, realistically, 2 queer characters is already a lot for a DreamWorks kids show. As much as I'd like it not to be.
But, since the beginning, Ben has been very clearly coded as exclusively into men to me. Before finally going into it, I remind everyone on here that I'm a lesbian. I have felt an affinity with his character specifically for the experience of only liking the same gender. I might be totally projecting.
Ok, so.
1. The arc Ben goes through during the show is yes, one of self discovery, but also one of self acceptance. He changes a lot from the start of s1, but he also comes to terms with stuff himself or other people didn't like about him. He doesn't throw the dork pouch away or tells Kenji to keep it, the first thing he does when he takes it back from Kenji is put on hand sanitizer. He is covered in dirt, he's not afraid of filth anymore, but he still does that action because it's part of who he is as a person. He also becomes very unashamed at the things he does. He went from being embarrassed of his carob bars to eating grubs in front of people who he knows think it's gross. He knows himself as he is and he accepts it. To me (and to lots of other people) this works very well as a gay metaphor, and pairs up pretty nicely with the whole "jungle boy? Jungle MAN" arc being a trans metaphor. But how does this make Ben uniquely into men?
Well, it doesn't. But I think this next one does.
2. Enter Yasmina. She's pretty, she's smart, athletic, funny, all that good stuff. I'm not saying that means every wlm character should automatically be into her, but it certainly helps. Now forgive me if I don't remember specific episodes/seasons, but we all remember that episode where Ben convinces himself that Yaz is in love with him for some reason. When he "rejects" her, he says : "I'm just now starting to find myself". That's cool, cause I'm pretty sure Ben's " finding himself " personality wise was over and done a couple of seasons ago. To me, that is a really good hint at him dealing with his gayness.
3. He's also the first person Yasmina talks to about her feelings for Sammy. Now, in this particular context, the options for Yaz to talk to were Darius, Brooklynn, or Ben. It would initially seem to make more sense for her to confide in Brooklynn, since the two of them are far closer than her and Ben, and it also wouldn't be the first time she brings up Sammy as a romantic interest for Yaz (see: everyone tweaking abt that one line back in like s2). So why does Yasmina, a very private and reserved person, choose Ben to talk to about her same sex crush? She has probably gathered from the previous conversation that Ben relates to her struggle in a unique way in which Brooklynn just can't. Ben seems very receptive of what Yaz is saying ("feelings, am I right?") and it seems like he REALLY gets where she's coming from.
4. This is one I don't see talked about a lot, and maybe it's just cause I'm too out of the loop with the fandom, but I want to examine it as well. It's when Ben decides to not actually stay on the island. Everyone (except Sammy) already knew he wasn't going to stay in the end, but still didn't force him out. I think this is especially clear in a line Darius says when they reunite on the boat that goes something like "you needed to figure it out on your own" *smile hand on shoulder combo*. No explanation needed I think
I am diagnosed with autism did you guys know what

I don't make a lot of posts on here but can I just say-what in the fresh mother of fuck happened to fandoms lately??? Like I mind my business and it's in one ear and out the other, but it seems like people are going absolutely apeshit these days,,, what happened to headcanons? Tf happened to people seeing something they don't like and simply just "huh well ill move on with my life cuz I don't like this character/that person's version and not interact"
Now if you share smth about a character it's like kids freak out and send a witchhunt after you. What happened to fun??? Does anyone remember that?? Having 100s of AUs for everything because if it didn't happen in canon you could just...write/draw whatever you wanted???
I keep seeing people getting attacked over LGBTQIA+ headcanons and people threatening them cuz "tHaTs nOt cAnOn FuCk yOu" and it's atrocious. Yall know the block button is there for a reason??
The internet is your Oyster and yall keep eating the buffet food that yall actively DONT LIKE. curate it how you want. The more hate comments that you send the more you're gonna see that content broski, just choose the not interested option, block, and move on, it's truly not that serious
Also don't freak out over someone else's opinion on a character? Let people enjoy themselves.
Idk maybe I'm just old school and frankly don't care that much about character takes, but making posts about how a character can ONLY be this way and then they lose their mind and start threatening and sending hate when someone else thinks differently.
Like they're fictional bro, they can be anything. Turn them into fucking Shrek if you want to, you have the power, and it's not that serious. So long as it's not an ethnic stereotype, some type of erasure, or that line of shit, who cares.
Make your headcanons, do your fanfics and fanart. And if you see something you don't like-just don't interact???
I wonder if people actually enjoy media sometimes or if they're just using it as an excuse to troll and spread hate. Like do you ever take the stick from out of your man or are you chronically online sitting in your desk chair. Is it fused with your asscrack, have you never felt joy since you shoved the stick up there? Were you born a bitter bitch or did someone else's headcanon character come into your house and hold you hostage?
Long winded rant thing but yeah people need to chill. Another note I'd like to add, cuz this is sort of related to posts I've seen-i saw someone say that 1 character can be trans because he's like...macho masc and shit, but then character 2 can't because character 2 doesn't make masculinity his whole personality and is "too soft" basically. They make character 2 cis, agender, transfem, literally everything else but oh no don't ever make character 2 trans because hEs nOt mAn eNoUgH basically.
which is WILD to me, that's some serious deep rooted gender roles you're projecting brother, but sure. Thing is tho, I blocked and moved on and now it's in one ear and out the other, which I think is smth a lot of people need to do now instead of sending hate threats over FICTIONAL THINGS
Anyways thanks for coming to my tedtalk have a great day

i've talked about this at lenGth in multiple places but seeinG this has stoked that fire once more so fuck it why not i feel like typinG out a rant actually not believinG in june full stop is fuckinG stupid and shows a huGe lack of understandinG of the story and character as well as a straiGht up disreGard for canon itself if you hc her transmasc the OFFICIAL writers for the OFFICIAL CONTINUATION have said MULTIPLE TIMES that june is canon and was always planned even before the toblerone
Tumblr media
sayinG june is "only canon to the epiloGues and beyond canon" also shows that you either did not understand them or just straiGht up didn't read them. aGain, official word
Tumblr media
and sayinG or arGuinG that june can/should only be canon in one timeline (meat/candy) is stupid and also kinda just straiGht up disGustinG??? that implies horrible thinGs about trans people actually? usinG roxy as an excuse for this plays into the "you did not understand the story" thinG because if you read candy all the way throuGh you would very much know that roxy is not "just transmasc in meat" a lot of people try to arGue that june and her deadname (i don't wanna say it sorry) can co-exist and that due to doomed timelines anythinG is possible but aGain that's Gross and implies that june isn't the REAL one she's just a possibility that can happen in an alternate timeline to please the trans women and then all the *normal* fans can still have their boy character. it's very apparent they see transfems as an uncomfortable other and they feel that no character or person they love could ever be that. many other arGuments i see are stuff like "she acts like a Guy throuGhout the whole story, people refer to her as a man" and i'm like.... yeah? have you ever met a trans person???? like ever? and then the headcanon-inG of her as transmasc... do you Genuinely believe that this character who is well known for repressinG emotions fiGured out her Gender identity and transitioned before the aGe of the 12? and you think everyone in 2009 just accepted that? seeinG june as transmasc is throwinG canon out of the window and that's a little disrespectful no? don't we think that we should actually take the story itself into consideration when cominG up with headcanons for characters? so much of fandom headcanon culture is just slappinG a label on someone without considerinG how that affects the story or enhances the readinG of the character and i could Go into how this makes transmasc dave also a bit silly cuz a biG part of dave's arc is overcominG his internalized homophobia so havinG him be transmasc kinda messes with that a lot actually. but anyway the point is june is canon. no one in this fandom can read. i'd like to think that when they eventually fully canonize her in bc that'll reduce the discourse but knowinG this fandom it'll just Get worse.

im gonna fly off the handle
