i’m kinda feeling a jealous!luke rn…… how do we feel about luke going to cheer for fuve star in one of her matches but afterwards when he’s going to congratulate her, he finds some dude trying to flirt with her. and she’s clearly not interested but luke doesn’t miss the chance to greet her with a kiss and then look at the guy with the most annoyed, dismissive expression ever. then luke smiles. “sorry, was i interrupting?”
a/n: i know nothing about field hockey! beware!
"mr. d, i don't know how you do this," luke muttered, eyes darting between you and clarisse on the field. the score was 1-1 and it was end of 2OT. both teams were gearing up for a shootout for the national title. "i've never been this nervous in my life."
mr. d chuckled from beside him, placing a comforting hand on luke's upper back, "trust me, it doesn't get any easier."
"i think i'm gonna throw up," chris mumbled from beside luke, anxiously waiting for the referee to indicate that the shootout was starting. clarisse was third on the line-up.
"you and me both, brother," luke replied, chewing on his bottom lip. he tugged on his shirt, suddenly feeling confined in the fabric. you were so close to the championship. this was the final game and if you won, you'd be a back-to-back national champion.
luke knew how hard you worked to get here. he often got voice memos from you, ranting about how practice and training wore you out, but he knew you got up bright and early the next day to do it again. you fell asleep on facetime calls often, sometimes only lasting ten minutes before you fell asleep on the call.
"it's starting," chris said, getting up from his seat. "i don't know if i want to watch or look away."
northwestern was up first. goal.
"fuck," travis groaned, echoing the sentiment of fellow unc supporters in the stands.
connor and travis were sitting behind him, both equally nervous to see how the game would unfold. you and clarisse had bought them unc merch to wear to the game, but luke and chris wanted to surprise you and clarisse with diy shirts that said "number [your jersey number/ clarisse's jersey number] biggest fan." you and clarisse both laughed when you saw their shirts. you loved them.
by the time it was clarisse's turn, the score was 1-0 (shootout) with unc trailing behind.
"come on, clar," chris hollered, clapping his hands, "you got this!"
clarisse masterfully maneuvered around northwestern's goalie and sunk the ball into the net. the boys and mr. d screamed in celebration as the score changed to reflect the goal. 1-1. unc was still in it.
clarisse pointed to the stands, eyes finding chris' in the crowd and blew him a kiss. chris beamed as he saw himself on the big screen. he pointed to his shirt, mouthing, "that's my girl!"
"i love how two days ago you guys had no clue how field hockey worked and now look at you," silena teased, adjusting the unc cap on her head.
"we still don't know what's going on, to be honest," luke replied sheepishly, scratching the nape of his neck, "but this is the big game!"
"i get it," she said, nudging charlie, "i still don't understand football but i'm at my wits end every time i watch him play."
charlie chuckled, wrapping an arm around silena's waist, before cheering with the rest of the crowd when you stepped up for the shootout.
you were the last one to go and even that alone is a lot of pressure, but you were the tiebreaker for this shootout. the score was still 1-1. nobody has scored since clarisse, both goalies were brick walls and luke's heart was hammering in his chest.
"come on, five star," he whispered, biting his knuckles, "light work baby."
you took a deep breath and dribbled the ball. you were electric out there. you were strategic and quick on your toes. luke was mesmerized watching you play. he'd seen your tapes before, in preparation for this game just so he wasn't completely clueless walking into the championship game, but watching it in real time was something else.
you swerved around the goalie and hit the ball. luke held his breath. goal.
"let's fucking go!" you screamed, falling to your knees on the field as your teammates rushed to engulf you in a hug.
the screams from the unc fans were defeaning. luke was grinning from ear to ear as the boys cheered around him. chris wrapped an arm around his shoulders, shaking him relentlessly. luke couldn't contain his excitement, but he knew that he should let you have this moment with your team. he'll celebrate with you in a bit, for now, you needed to soak in this feeling. back-to-back national champion.
as the adrenaline from the win began to subside, luke and chris, with the help of mr. d, made their way to the field. chris wandered off to find clarisse and luke was standing on the sidelines as mr. d talked to your coach. he watched as you did your post-game interview. you were glowing and it took all his willpower to not run up to you and kiss you on national television.
when you shook the reporter's hand in goodbye, luke began walking over to you, only to stop in his tracks when a boy approached you. luke blinked, tilting his head as he watched the situation unfold.
the guy was... okay-looking. he was definitely an athlete too, based on his build and height. luke's assumptions were proven correct when he got close enough to see his unc basketball hoodie. the boy's eyes fucking twinkled while he spoke to you, a charming smile adorning his face that luke wanted to punch off his prince charming facade.
he watched as you took a step back from the boy, awkwardly gesturing somewhere in the stands. luke felt smug hearing you say, "well, i have a boyfriend and he's over there actually so i should go find him."
but the guy was not letting up. luke watched as the guy rolled his eyes, obviously unphased by your revelation. luke clenched his jaw, keeping his composure.
luke marched over to you and wrapped an arm around your waist to turn you around. he roughly connected his lips with yours, smirking inside when you moaned at the contact. your arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him deeper. his hands traveled up your spine, pushing you flush against his body. when the two of you pulled away, your eyes remained closed, a giddy smile on your face as you breathed out, "hell of a congratulations, castellan."
luke laughed, placing a quick kiss to your lips before turning to address the boy, "sorry, was i interrupting something?"
you had to cover your mouth to muffle the snort that came out of you. luke was staring at the boy intensely, lips in a tight line, as his hand squeezed the skin of your hip in possessiveness. the boy faltered, taking a step back in defeat. luke continued to shoot daggers at him, not deterred by the threat, or lack thereof, in front of him. eventually, the boy got the hint and walked away, shaking his head.
luke's cocky smirk was unstoppable as he faced you again, "great job, baby. national champ, again! look at you."
"thank you," you sighed, nuzzling your face into his neck. luke welcomed your public display of affection. "are we gonna talk about what just happened?"
he rolled his eyes, playfully, "nah, not worth it."
"yeah, but it was hot."
"then yes, let's talk about how hot you think i am."
"shut up," you replied, kissing him again. if this was your way of shutting him up, he wasn't going to complain.

Field Hockey Competition Levels in the US
Tumblr media
Field hockey is a popular sport in Europe and Australia, with the latter country winning four Olympic gold medals in men's and women's events since 1988, but it pales in comparison to ice hockey in the United States. Field hockey has been contested at every Summer Olympics since 1928 and American teams have won just two medals, a bronze for the men in 1932 and bronze for the women in 1984. However, field hockey has high participation rates in US high schools, while USA Field Hockey, the sport's national governing body, recently announced a partnership with Skyhawk powered by Stack Sports to expedite its growth at the grassroots level.
According to NCSA College Recruiting, there are more than 60,000 high school field hockey players in the US. While there are 263 college field hockey teams in the country spanning various NCAA divisions, American players have to compete with recruits from other countries, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, for scholarships.
Field hockey is most popular in the US in northeastern states such as Massachusetts and Maine. Many of the top-ranked college programs, including Northwestern, Harvard, Liberty, and Rutgers, are located on the east coast. However, North Carolina and Louisville, among others, also have highly regarded NCAA Division I field hockey programs. Students can also earn scholarships to Division II and III programs at schools like Adelphi University (New York), Clark University (Massachusetts), Connecticut College (Connecticut), and Framingham State University (Massachusetts). These schools tend to offer a more balanced schedule of athletics and academics.
Beyond the college level, the ultimate goal for competitive field hockey players is the Summer Olympics. USA Field Hockey selects the men's and women's national teams, which also compete in Olympic qualifiers and the FIH Hockey Pro League. The fifth season of the FIH Pro League, which featured nine men's and nine women's teams, concluded on June 30, 2024. Speaking to the need for further development at the youth level, the US women's team lost all but one of its 16 games this past season. The champion of the league earns automatic entry into the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
USA Field Hockey also has men's and women's development and U-21, U-18, and U-16 national teams, which compete in international events such as the Junior Pan American Championship, U-21 Nexus Championship, and FIH Junior World Cup. Moreover, USA Field Hockey hosts national events to support player development. These include the Summer Bash at the Beach, which is celebrating its ninth year in 2024, and the National Hockey Festival.
Held in partnership with 3STEP Sports, the 2024 National Hockey Festival is scheduled to take place at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples, Florida, from November 29 to December 1 and will feature tournaments in multiple age groups, including U-10, U-12, and U-14 co-ed as well as U-19 boys and girls and adult co-ed.
Finally, USA Field Hockey is hoping to increase youth participation through its partnership with Skyhawks, which Franchise Magazine lists the as best youth sports franchise. Skyhawks will organize player development camps throughout the US during the next three years, and offer training to prospective youth coaches. USA Field Hockey is hoping this strategic partnership encourages thousands of young people to pick up the sport.

Edith Renfrow Smith (July 14, 1914) was the first African American woman to graduate from Grinnell College. The granddaughter of enslaved, at age 108 she was designated a “superager” in a study by Northwestern University for her remarkable memory and longevity. In 2019, she was given an honorary degree from Grinnell College. In 2022, Grinnell College announced it would name a new residence hall in her honor. Renfrow Hall is scheduled to open in the fall of 2024. As of April 2023, she is still living in Chicago.
She, like most of the other Renfrow children, completed her public school education in Grinnell. She was the only one to stay in town and attend Grinnell College. She graduated in 1937 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Economics.
A student during the Depression, she worked several campus jobs and lived and ate her meals at home to save money. Despite the living arrangement, she was able to participate in the campus community. In a 2007 article in the Grinnell Magazine, she is quoted as saying “That was a wonderful experience. I was just part of the group, and I enjoyed all the group activities that we had at Grinnell.” She attended dances and dinners along with the other female students. She played sports, including basketball and field hockey.
After college, she moved to Chicago in search of work. There she worked at the YWCA and the University of Chicago. She met Henry T. Smith and on May 25, 1940, the couple was married in the Renfrow home in Grinnell. They had two children. She earned her teaching license and taught in the Chicago school system for 21 years. After retirement in 1976, she started to volunteer regularly at Goodwill and the Art Institute of Chicago, something she continued into her nineties. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Gender in sports and western feminist saving third world women
Tumblr media
Recently I have read two readings, the first one being Anne Fausto-Sterling's “Duel Dualism” and the second one reading being Chandra Talpade Mohanty's foundational piece "Under Western Eyes." My class has discussed Gender apart of biological matters, Gender and sports, and the savior complexes that western women have to third world women.
These topics have made me question what does it mean to be a woman of color in today's society, who are the helpers and who are the saviors and what does it really mean to be a woman. To dissect Anne Fausto-Sterlings “Duel Dualism” she talks about a specific portion of the Olympics where a woman who contested was found to be intersex. After that she couldn’t take part in the sport because she stood up for herself. Later on after fighting for a long time and after many people came forward to talk about gender and sexuality and what makes someone a woman and what makes someone a man, they said yes she is a woman.
This reading brought up the topic of should gender matter in sports. To me, and many other people said it doesn’t matter much, but there are so many pieces missing. “What if certain people don’t feel comfortable in a co-ed room, what if some people want to stay on same gendered teams, what if people get hurt because men are biologically stronger and have more muscle mass than women?” I brought up a personal life experience that has formed my opinion which was when I was younger, I loved playing in the mud and wearing my overalls. I loved to play fighting and just having fun playing sports with anyone. When school came around though, the girls in my class were always separated and just stood around. There were a few girls who did play like me, but I just didn’t understand. When High school came around, the mentality of I’m a woman and I am not meant to mix with them has been ingrained into me. I was embarrassed to play aggressive football, I felt dumb if I was running to catch the kickball ball, or if I didn’t play dumb. But then, I felt like a man if I played aggressive in field hockey, I felt manly if I kicked the ball halfway across the field, and I felt manly when spiking the volleyball. My opinion of gender shouldn’t matter in sports comes from those experiences. A woman who wants to fight against men or play on a football team with men who may be a foot taller and 150+ pounds than her will do whatever it takes to compete against them. That division in sports and in classrooms is what causes these problems of division. Why does there even have to be a division? There shouldn’t be. I honestly think that because we divide so much stuff in the first place, we have dug our own hole of problems. Now, we have to fight for people to be able to just have fun.
To continue onto the second reading by Chandra Talpade, she talks about how western women perceive third world women as one big group of struggling people who need to be saved and who need their culture to be changed to benefit them. While a whole culture doesn't need to be changed, the struggle they go through does need to be changed. Something that makes me think of Chandras opinion is right now as I type this a tribe in northwestern Nigeria called the Hausa are having an issue between their people and women. Western cultures are trying to stop the passed down tradition of scarification. Scarification is something that is widely done in Africa to show milestones in a man or woman's life. Some scars are to show beauty, marriage, puberty, political stance, religious stance and much more. Some western people think that this is harmful to babies and people because they believe it is forced, but it is odd to them because they aren’t a part of their culture. Chandra Talpade would agree that this is once again the western feminist coming into contact with third world people, culture, and woman. It seems harmful, but is it really?
The only thing that I don’t agree with Chandra on is that yes, western feminist may not understand to the fullest extent what it means to be a woman in a third world country, but I think even the slightest bit of voice for them is better than nothing. I’m not trying to tone down the suffering of what they go through, but change does start somewhere, whether it be from a western woman who isn’t a person of color, or whether it’s a third world woman. We are all women who go through our own walks of life and issues that not every other woman will understand. Instead of getting mad at the common woman we should instead talk and show the common woman of these things. Work together and become stronger.

Olympic Sports Roundup: 11/16
Olympic Sports Roundup: 11/16
There’s no easy way to end a season, but there’s something particularly cruel about the seasons that end before you even have a chance to understand that they’re over. The buzzer-beaters and hail marys and last-minute goals rip your heart out and barely give you a chance to process what’s happening. For Iowa field hockey, it was as heartbreaking a loss as I’ve seen. The team played Northwestern…

AWESOME TIMES WITH CAROLINE
Good work during the week at lacrosse and hip hop and also scoring a virtual hole-in-one with Taylor. Henry went down with a stomach bug Saturday so I got some bonus time with just Caroline. She had a bit of hesitation prior to lacrosse so I insisted on accompanying her to her first field hockey games—a doubleheader where the Purple Pandas were facing off against the Green Dragons and then the Golden Gorillas. Not a ton of fierce competitors on the Pandas. Of the dozen girls or so I’d say two or three refused to get on the field, five or so played infrequently and Caroline and a couple girls played almost the entire time. Caroline didn’t stand around and watch but probably had her stick on the ball dribbling or more often taking on three opponents half the time while her teammates watched. I’ll get out the dry erase board this week and give her some strategy. We played nine holes together after that on a beautiful night where I was disappointed my phone/camera ran out of battery. She got an 8 on 1st hole from real tee box (457 yards) and almost had a real hole-in-one on 7th hole (from 80 yards). We crushed a slab of prime rib together on the terrace after. Sunday morning we stayed quiet to avoid waking up mama so we didn’t have to go to church. Went to hit balls at the simulator and had an early dinner at Oak House and caught playoff holes of RBC Heritage. Spieth was inches away from sinking putts to win it on each of first two playoff holes but Caroline put a hex on him so he missed. We were rooting for Matt Fitzgerald because he is a Northwestern guy (Wildcat Golf Academy adjacent) who grew up going to Pete Dye’s Harbor Town much like kids are growing up going to Pete Dye’s courses at Casa de Campo. Fitzgerald hit his approach shot within feet on the third playoff hole and sealed the deal after another successful Caroline hex of his opponent and we cheered.

Iowa Field Hockey Earns #2 Seed In NCAA Tournament
After a brilliant start to the season, Iowa field hockey’s magnificent run through the 2021 season has hit a few speed bumps of late.
