A Gap Year Adventure in New Zealand: Exploring the Land of Beauty and Conservation
Taking a gap year is a chance to step away from all the studying after school nd to gain new experiences. What better place to do this than New Zealand? Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich Maori culture, and thrilling activities, New Zealand is the perfect destination for adventure, personal growth, and the opportunity to make a difference.
Why New Zealand?
New Zealand, made up of the North Island and South Island along with numerous smaller islands, boasts a population of about 5 million and has Wellington as its vibrant capital city. Famous for its stunning scenery that served as the backdrop for iconic movies like "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit," New Zealand is a magnet for tourists and adventurers alike. But the most important reason why I want to visit the beautiful country is for it's stunning and unique flora and fauna.
The Journey Begins
Getting to New Zealand from Düsseldorf takes at least 28 hours, but the journey is well worth it. Flights start at 103 euros so looking for a cheap one that takes me ight to my destination will be difficult will be difficult. The best times to visit are in February, May, or August as prices drop during that time and allow me to travel with a smaller budget. From there I will use public transport when I arrive. New Zealand offers an extensive network of affordable buses, making it easy to travel and explore.
During my gap year, I wish to volunteer at the Kiwi Conservation Volunteer & Internship Project. This program offers a unique chance to live close to nature and contribute to crucial conservation efforts. For a application fee of 512.40 euros, I'll be provided with a stay in small cabins equipped with basic necessities and work in expansive forests covering about 2,000 hectares.
As a volunteer, I'll engage in various tasks such as track maintenance, bait station filling and monitoring, GPS trail mapping, trapping, small mammal monitoring, and monitoring endangered species like the kiwi and kokako birds. Not only will this teach me about New Zealand’s native forests and endangered birds, but it’ll also help stabilize the populations of these incredible species.
Social Connections and Cultural Immersion
Volunteering with the Kiwi Conservation project offers more than just work experience. Building social connections with fellow volunteers from different countries, gaining new perspectives and making lifelong friends makes it all the more worth it. The program allows one day off each week, giving aomple time to participate in activities, explore the cities, and get immersed in Maori culture. Attending cultural performances, visiting traditional villages, and learn about the history and customs of the Maori people will prove to be a great way to get even more insight into the rich history of the country and it's inhabitants.
Budgeting for the Gap Year
Planning the budget is crucial for a successful gap year. In addition to the 512.40 euros application fee, I'll have to allocate at least 420 euros for travel. Activities range from free to at least 34 euros, ensuring I'll be able to find something that fits into my budget. From bungee jumping and skydiving to hiking and skiing, the country provides endless opportunities for adventures. Some highlights include a four-hour day cruise for 71 euros and a ziplining and forest walk on Waiheke Island for 51 euros. Hiking and city explorations are often free, allowing me to enjoy the natural beauty and vibrant urban life without spending my money.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion visiting New Zealand and volunteering there in wildlife conservation really is a great opportunity to break out of the stressful school life I'm used to but still learning new things and contributing to the world.

I did not want to give Tokoyami the classic bird so he gets a Uroplatus phantasticus. Momo gets a barn owl, Jirou gets a North Island Kokako because of the beautiful song of this bird.

Grey Ghost - Rachel Walker.
The muted blues and brown, that Rachel uses in this image is something similar I had in mind for my final piece of work. This image will be used as a reference image in completion of my work to expand my illustration to the next level.
The South Island Kokako (distinguishable by its yellow, instead of blue, wattles) was classified as extinct a few years ago, but there have been unconfirmed sightings in the misty South Island forests...
I tried to rein in my palette for this one (tough for me!), and added a bit of smoky white acrylic over the tree silhouettes. I’ll be working on a North Island Kokako pair very soon.
The Kokako makes one of the most beautiful calls, in my opinion.

I would like to add
The kokako pictured above is the definitely extant North Island kokako. This is a painting by the amazing Paul Martinson of the South Island kokako, which may or may not be extinct. They have/had orange wattles.
Kokako are extremely clumsy herbivores and prefer to walk rather than fly, and tend to fling themselves between trees to get to new food. Go to YouTube and you can find videos of them playing and doing other stupid things. They are named after the sound of their song!
Top five wattles!! :D
Oh this is fun.1. Ocellated Turkey. I mean you have gorgeously iridescent feathers on the rest of the bird, but blue skin and orange and pink caruncles AND a magnificent drooping snood? It’s almost too much. Sadly this photo doesn’t show the snood to its greatest glory since it’s on the other side of the beak but the rest of the display makes up for it.
2. Kokako. I mean a wattlebird has to feature somewhere, and personally, while I appreciate how outrageous the ocellated turkey is, sometimes you want elegantly understated, and the kokako has you covered there. Sleek grey feathers and deep blue wattles under the bill make a heck of a statement.
3. Southern Cassowary. The undisputed winner of “most intimidating wattles” as far as I’m concerned. I don’t want to meet these wattles in a dark alley. Or dark forest. Or anywhere without a fence between me and the wattles, to be quite honest.
4. Andean Condor. Check out the wingspan on these wattles. And unlike the cassowary, I feel like I’d love to chill in the presence of a condor. Also, I like the muted tones. It sends off much less of a “don’t fuck with me” vibe without reducing any of the magnificence.
5. Temminck’s Tragopan. I mean. Just look at it. It’s almost eyeburning in its magnificence. All the tragopans deserve recognition for their amazing achievements in fleshy face decorations, but Temminck’s just has a little extra something.

The Daily Tulip – News From Around The World
Sunday 20th May 2018
Good Morning Gentle Reader…. Sunday, and the Lord rested, wish I had been one then I wouldn't have to get up at 3:30am but really it's no problem, at least I can get up.... Bella was eager to go out this morning, with a slight breeze she must have smelt something that appealed to her.. Coffee has the same effect on me..but I guess you know that by now...
JAPANESE CASTLE SEEKS LORD AND LADY FOR ONE NIGHT…. A guesthouse company in Japan is offering one couple a chance to experience a night as lord and lady of Hirado Castle, in an attempt to attract tourists to the area, The Mainichi website reports. Couples applying for the chance to do so have to comprise a man and woman and be at least 20 years old. The winners not only get to stay the night in the castle tower, they will be guarded by city officials dressed as ninjas and met by 30 volunteers dressed in full armour. They will also be served a dinner made from local ingredients, the website says. The current Hirado Castle in Nagasaki Prefecture was built in the 1960s. It currently houses a museum of artefacts from the local Matsura clan, who first built a fortress on the site in 1599 and ruled the area for two and a half centuries.
EGYPTIAN PROFESSOR INVESTIGATED OVER BELLYDANCE VIDEO…. An Egyptian professor fears she may lose her job after posting a video of herself bellydancing on Facebook. The video, as well as a photo of Mona Prince in a bikini, has been widely shared and has attracted online criticism. Now the professor, who teaches English literature at Suez University, is being investigated over them, Ahram Online reports. While some have defended her, many on social media said they expected a university professor to act within the norms and traditions of Egypt's mostly conservative society, and to be a role model. Ms Prince's faculty dean, Mona Saba, told the BBC that she "did not respect traditions and the university values". She also said that Ms Prince was being investigated for other issues relating to discipline, attendance and academic material, as well as the results of her students. In a post on her Facebook page, Ms Prince rejected the accusations saying some of the issues were "purely administrative" and that, in relation to her students' results "you have the examination papers, you decide". She said she feared she might be expelled from the university but would consider all the measures open to her in regard to the issue, and thanked those supporting her. "I will never stop laughing, dancing, singing and writing," she said in a Facebook post.
INDIAN BANK STAFF PRAISED FOR FENDING OFF ROBBERS…. Two Indian women are being hailed for their bravery in fighting off robbers at the State Bank of India branch where they work near New Delhi. The Hindustan Times reports how Vimla Devi and Poonam were confronted by two men who entered the bank in Gurgaon pretending to be customers. The suspects are alleged to have drawn guns on them, while attempting to hit them and take money from the counter. The two women fought back, however, and managed to snatch one of the guns from one of the attackers and raise the alarm. Several people came to their aid, and the two men were apprehended. The Times of India quoted a Gurgaon police commissioner saying the women would be honoured for showing "exemplary courage".
RUSSIAN TANK MAKER PUBLISHES 'PATRIOTIC' CHILDREN'S BOOK…. One of Russia's largest defence companies has published a book about its tanks for children of pre-school age. The illustrated story, Adventures of the Little Tank, follows a toy that's been accidentally left behind overnight in the museum of defence manufacturer Uralvagonzavod. The forgotten little tank spends the night meeting the facility's full-size machines and hearing all about their "adventures" in foreign lands, the company says.
REWARD FOR SIGHTINGS OF 'POSSIBLY EXTINCT' NEW ZEALAND BIRD…. A cash reward is on offer in New Zealand for any sightings of a native bird that was until recently thought to be extinct. The South Island kokako - sometimes called the "grey ghost" - was declared extinct in 2007, but then reclassified as "data deficient" in 2013 following a number of reported sightings. Despite the change, there's been no definitive proof that any of the birds are still alive - and that's what the South Island Kokako Charitable Trust wants to find. "If South Island kokako still exist, there will be very few left," chairman Euan Kennedy tells Stuff.co.nz. "We need to locate them very soon so that conservation has a higher prospect of success." The trust is offering 5,000 New Zealand dollars (US$3,600; £2,900) for "definitive evidence of survival" - preferably a photograph - and is asking everyone to keep their eyes and ears open in the country's southern forests. The reward will be paid out once a panel of ornithologists has reviewed any evidence and concluded that the bird does still exist. The South Island kokako was once common but, as with so many of New Zealand's native birds, suffered greatly from the spread of introduced predators in the 19th Century. Anyone who thinks they've spotted or heard one can log the encounter online. Smaller than a pigeon, it looks similar to the North Island kokako but has an orange wattle rather than a blue one. Its flute-like call could be confused with some other species, so the Trust would prefer visual evidence, although it adds one important point: "Please do not shoot a bird to satisfy our requirements!"
Well Gentle Reader I hope you enjoyed our look at the news from around the world this, Sunday morning… …
Our Tulips today are growing in Holland ... but the Windmills gave it away...
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Sunday 20th May 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…

Day 1: a bird in a tree.
I thought I might try to restart my tumblr writing with 12 days for Christmas. I won’t normally be adhering to any themes from the song, but yesterday I went with my parents and children to the bird sanctuary on Tiritiri Matangi so I have lots of birds in trees. The top is a Kereru (wood pigeon) and the bottom a Tui. These are both native New Zealand birds I have seen before, but we also saw some I had never seen (not that I spend a lot of time looking) like the kokako, the North Island Robin, and the saddleback.
Tiritiri is an island where they have eradicated non-native predators. We got there via a 20 minute ferry ride from Gulf Harbor. There is only round trip per day; you stay about five hours and then come back. My Dad likes photographing birds; the trip was an effort to cater to his interest. He spent most of the trip looking at birds; the kids, my mom and I did about a 40 minute nature walk, then ate lunch and went to the beach.

The Daily Tulip – International News From Around The World
Friday 14th April 2017
Good Morning Gentle Reader…. Beautiful morning, star filled heaven and mild.. Spring/Summer seems to have arrived.. Yesterday, the beaches were one of the most popular places to be ..temperatures in the mid 25c all along the Costa del Sol and I noticed people still taking advantage of the setting sun at 7.30pm as Bella and I had our final long walk along the promenade.. I try to get her walk in before all the parades start, not that she’s afraid, but it’s best to take care… This morning its silent at 4am not like later last night when the parade passed our house, with drums beating, trumpets screaming, incense everywhere, men in hoods and far too much noise… It can only be Easter in Spain…
NORTH KOREA'S HIDDEN SUBMARINE THREAT IS ANOTHER WORRY AS REGIME WARNS IT'S 'READY' FOR WAR…. The idling presence of anti-submarine military crafts hovering off the United States' West Coast has prompted concerns of a possible threat to national security. Concerns have circulated that a foreign submarine from North Korea or Russia could be the reason for the unusual military activity off the coast of California. Three low-lying military aircraft were reportedly seen in the area using flight-tracking software, despite it not being a normal area of surveillance. Among aircraft seen were the Navy EP-3E Aries II, which is used for electronic surveillance, a Navy P-3C Orion, used for submarine spotting, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon used for anti-submarine warfare, InfoWars reported. The military vessels were allegedly seen spanning the coastal waters from Los Angeles to the San Diego/Tijuana border near Mexico. The website stated that a Royal Canadian CP-140 Orion, which is also known for its capability to spot submarines, entered the area at one point. Though the reports remain unconfirmed, they come in the wake of a tumultuous week for the United States' foreign activity, after President Trump launched 59 tomahawk missiles at a Syrian air base on Friday. The action was said to have infuriated Moscow and Russian government. According to the Sun, Russia and Iran made a joint statement, which read: 'What America waged in an aggression on Syria is a crossing of red lines. 'From now on we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is and America knows our ability to respond well.'

Hunt for the wilder aspect of New Zealand
Zealand’s landscapes are on the silver screen. The Lord of the Jewelry movies confirmed off the majestic mountainous surroundings so properly they sparked a tourism increase – and 13% of visitors nonetheless cite Peter Jackson’s cinematography in their selection to go to.
New Zealand
Weird News
Out next Friday (16 September), Hunt for the Wilder people, a comedy-drama directed with the aid of Taika Waititi and starring Sam Neill as He, grumpy foster uncle to Ricky (newcomer Julian Dennison), shines the highlight at the united states of America another time. The tale of a city youngster’s adventures within the desolate tract broke field workplace data at domestic and had rave opinions on the Edinburgh Global Movie Festival (prevailing the coveted Target market Award). It was filmed in large part inside the North Island’s Auckland location, in which seashores, rainforest, and vineyards surround New Zealand’s largest city. For the ones inspired to e-book a Kiwi adventure, here are five of the high-quality Movie-related options.
Stu Gilbert from SOS Survival Schooling coaches each person from airline crews to schoolchildren, so a session with him is a superb begin for might-be Wilder people, as Ricky dubs himself and Him. A former air pressure instructor, Stu shows learners the ropes in a fun session out in the bush on a large property in Muriwai, 45 minutes’ force from Auckland. After lessons at the fundamentals, he has participants foraging for logs, branches, and bracken to build a makeshift bed and refuge) and trying to light a fire the use of cotton wool, flint and metal (a lifeless phone battery also can paintings, apparently). We found the flint and metallic worked high-quality, with the right blend of tinder and kindling, and have been sparked up right away. Overnight and 3-day programs of complete bush immersion are to be had, too. A 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland is lovely, bohemian Waiheke island. Maximum vacationers get round by car, motorcycle or maybe zip-lining however, the Wilder people manner might be to leap on a horse like Ricky’s buddy Kahu (Torero Ngatai-Melbourne). Waiheke HorseWorx is a brand new operator that tours the seashores and bush tracks, taking in traditional Maori tradition and Waiheke’s famous wineries. Some of their steeds are Movie stars too: ask for Shaman if you’re a Hobbit fan (she changed into dwarf king Thorin’s mount). A standard four-hour excursion will begin with primary instruction, accompanied by a journey alongside beaches to Piritahi Marae community center for a conventional Maori welcome, earlier than a tea spoil and a trip to Cable Bay winery for meals and wine. Rather, in the middle of North Island, adventure enterprise River Valley in Taihape offers two- to four-day horse driving vacations from £430pp.
The 8km coastal walk from Bethells Seashore to Muriwai takes in breathtaking perspectives of the coast west of Auckland and is a winner with locals and site visitors alike. The Te Henga Walkway is a part of the Hillary Path, which connects some of the tracks inside the Waitakere Tiers. It takes on grass tracks, coastal bush, Seaside, and clifftops. It’s waymarked from Bethells Seaside and maintains through the Waitakere Ranges to a steep flight of steps referred to as the Satan’s Staircase. It’s a three- to four-hour trek that passes close to numerous locations used inside the Film: neighborhood landowner Vicky Bethell’s house become used as Kahu’s home, and plenty of outside scenes have been shot on the land close by. Hikers should thoughts their language, though: Vicky says the acoustics are so precise she can pay attention each phrase from far above.
A Trail strolling and walking event, Speight’s West Coaster (entry from £20pp) takes area on the Te Henga music on 10 December. For an extended walk, adventure South NZ has a 5-day trek in the Auckland region from £910.
Those who are, like Ricky, keen on rare birds, will find the Auckland place bursting with possibility. The volcanic island of Rangitoto (west of Waiheke) is domestic to covered species consisting of the take, or saddleback introduced lower back from the edge of extinction by means of a 2011 breeding program. Ferry operator Fullers runs tours to Rangitoto for £36pp, at the same time as tribal organization Te Haerenga gives tours with specialist Ngai Tai courses (from £83pp). Serious twitchers could head to Tiritiri Matangi, an island north of Auckland that’s home to many birds, such as lengthy-tailed cuckoo, takahe, kokako and that New Zealand preferred the little-spotted kiwi.
A forty-five-minute flight from Auckland, the volcanic lakeside metropolis of Taupo is a chilled vacation spot, and gateway to Mount Tongariro countrywide park, the web page of 3 mighty mountains which includes Ngauruhoe, (Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings). The vicinity is likewise used in Hunt for the Wilder people: Waititi and group stayed for some days at Lahar Farm, considerable assets with herds of sika deer and plenty of bush to explore. Owners Noeline and Brent Bishop lease out Lahar Alpine Retreat, a self-catering log cabin for six (from £sixty nine a night time). There is trekking, cycling, rafting and snowboarding in the country wide park.
