thinking about sam in 10x18...

as @normalbrothershow pointed out a while ago, sam said "you know I didn't mean-" and was cut off by dean, but because the (official?) script and many subtitles add "that," and because people see everything sam says and does through dean's perspective already, "you know I didn't mean-" becomes "you know I didn't mean that (because I don't mean what I say sometimes, especially if you and the audience don't like it)"

then in his later conversation with charlie, sam tells her "sounds about right" to her assumption "he [dean] did something you didn’t want, and that pissed you off. and you said something that hurt him?"

now even if you take sam agreeing with her at face value, which I don't, the language here is, again, interesting to me. because he's not agreeing with "you said something to hurt him" but "you said something that hurt him"

"to" in that context would, at least in my mind, imply it had only been said to cause dean pain, and therefore sam didn't mean it (HA!), but "that" instead of "to" says 'yes it hurt dean because he was determined to misunderstand me, but it HAD TO BE SAID'

which! if we come full circle, makes the incorrect script line even more damaging because I feel like most of the audience interpret these lines in a way that makes sam look the most hypocritical i.e. "I didn't mean that (that being added)" and "said something TO hurt him ('that' being replaced in their minds by 'to') when the interpretation based on the words sam actually says is something like "I didn't mean- 1) for it to come out harsh, which it wasn't at all but dean is an infant 2) for you to take it like that 3) WHAT YOU CLAIM I SAID BECAUSE YOU IMMEDIATELY CHANGED THE MEANING OF MY WORDS IN YOUR HEAD"

and "I said something that hurt him" because even though it was hard for him to hear he needed to hear it

EDIT: I've been informed via the tags that the transcript error is from a fan website which netflix then used for subtitles... dean bias in every single fan space?? more likely than you think!!!!

wait but i thought dean saying 'that's a relief' is in response to sam saying he doesn't want to use his powers anymore & not sam not wanting to talk about it?

it is in response to sam saying he wont use his powers anymore but it comes right after dean told sam he wants try to understand how sam is feeling and that he listens etc if sam continues with the powers. its hard to explain but i guess you could like say

sam is a drug addict, dean tells him he wants sam to open up to him and that he will be by his side, sam says "it doesnt matter. ill just stop taking drugs", and dean goes like "thats a relief and thank you that i dont have to worry about that/deal with it now"

i cant really find the right words but i know what its like to be in a situation where someone tells you they care and want to help but then the moment you tell them "it doesnt matter now" they switch to relief instead of trying to understand that sudden choice or how you felt while struggling

it doesnt matter if dean means it or is aware of the effect his words have, but it comes across as a confirmation that Yes, you struggling and me having to deal with an unstable You it is a burden
