Is America Reaching a Tipping Point? Another Brazen Attack Stuns Onlookers
Another kiddie league official has been attacked by an enraged adult in the type of episode that seems to be happening in youth sports all too often these days.
An umpire in a baseball game for 10-year-olds in The Colony, Texas, suffered a concussion at the hands of a coach who went wild after the ump threw him out of the game.
The altercation came after a close play at the plate in which umpire Sam Phelps called a player safe at home, according to KDFW-TV. The coach, who was not named in the report, angrily approached Phelps. The confrontation caused Phelps to throw the coach out of the game.
Video of the incident, which is now part of a police investigation, shows the coach shoving Phelps violently to the ground in an assault that snapped the ump’s head back sharply.
Last night, we spoke to an umpire from Denton, TX who said he’s pressing charges against a boy’s baseball coach after he was assaulted on Saturday.
This morning, @FOX4 obtained video of the incident.

Phelps was treated and released from a hospital after the attack and now says he has nagging neck pain. He is pressing charges against the coach, who left the park before police arrived.
L’Erin Hampton, president of the organization that put on the baseball tournament last weekend, lamented that too many of us seem to be missing the point of youth sports.
“The why we do it is everything. We have lost that,” Hampton said. “We are so focused on the score and winning the game, but the real win is the kids having fun.”
Indeed, this incident is far from unusual. Referees are being attacked all across the country.
Only days ago, a youth basketball referee in Georgia was brutally assaulted by a group of players and fans. Perhaps even more shocking is the fact that the game was being played in a church.

Also this month, an umpire in a kids’ softball game in Mississippi was allegedly punched after a parent took issue with a call. The parent was arrested and charged with assault.
This isn’t just happening in youth sports.
In January, Dallas Cowboys fans showered the field with garbage in their pique after a playoff game ended with a controversial call. When Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was told that the fans who threw the garbage were upset at the officials, he told the media, “Credit to them, then.”
Prescott went on to praise the unruly fans, saying, “I guess that’s why the refs took off and got out of there so fast. So I mean, yeah, I think everybody’s upset with the way that this thing played out.”

Such terrible behavior being applauded like that is turning sports into a battleground, and not just metaphorically. People are allowing their anger to lead.
This assault on sportsmanship is undermining honest competition all over the country and taking the fun right out of sports for kids and adults alike. Is this where we are headed as a society?
Let’s hope it isn’t.

Youth basketball ref attacked following game
The team has been banned from future competition.
A youth basketball game in Georgia devolved into anarchy and left a referee seriously injured following a group attack by numerous players over the weekend.

It’s unclear what sparked the brawl following competition at the “Love of the Game” held at Stronghold Christian Church in Lithonia, just outside of Atlanta — however video shows numerous 8th grade players chasing down and attacking a referee. TMZ is reporting the official required 30 stitches to close wounds sustained in the attack, but is expected to make a full recovery.
The tournament, which was not sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) was organized by Kenneth Tarver of KB Sports. Tarver said the team who initiated the attack on the referee will be banned from all future events — but that doesn’t explain much of what we see in the video.
At no point do we see any adults intervening in the attack. Whether parents watching from the stands, other referees, or tournament officials — it appears everyone just stood back and allowed the attack to happen. At one moment in the video we can see another referee staring directly at the attack and simply shake his head, before returning his attention to the game he’s officiating.
Tarver is claiming he plans to “beef up security” at future events, though there’s no explanation how an attack lasted for almost 30 seconds, or why adults captured in the video chose to laugh at what was unfolding, rather than stop a group beating.

Softball Umpire Issues Message to Spectators After Ambush Leaves Her with Black Eye
An umpire for a youth softball game was allegedly attacked after a spectator disagreed with her call, but her response to the incident sent an even stronger message.
According to Magnolia State Live, Kristi Moore was serving as an umpire for a 12-year-old softball game in Laurel, Mississippi, on Saturday. After she made a call, Kiara Thomas, a parent of one of the players, allegedly began yelling at her from the stands.
A coach eventually asked Thomas to leave the game because she was cursing. While Thomas did leave the stadium, she reportedly did not leave the complex altogether.
Instead, Thomas waited in the parking lot until after the game. When Moore walked out, Thomas allegedly confronted her and punched her in the face.
Thomas was arrested at the scene and charged with simple assault, Magnolia State Live reported. She was fined $422.25 and released soon after.
This was a senseless act of violence, and Moore had every right to be upset after she was attacked. Yet to her credit, she took to Facebook and issued an extremely level headed response.
“The next time you go to a tournament and you only have one umpire on the field…this is why,” Moore wrote alongside a picture of her bruised face.
On a purely human level, this attack is clearly unacceptable. Beyond that, Moore explained the rise in violence against officials at sporting events could eventually prevent children from being able to play sports at all.
“When you have brand new umpires on the field that may not know everything they should know yet…..this is why. When you don’t feel you have the quality of umpires you should….this is why. When the day comes that your kid can’t play a ballgame because there are no longer officials to call it….THIS.IS.WHY.”
Moore said it is easy to criticize someone from the sideline, but she challenged followers to walk a mile in her shoes before casting judgement.
“Before you post the next ‘funny’ meme about umpires that suck, or are blind, or have missed calls on their phone or whatever it is, before you post about how an umpire was so awful and terrible and lost the game for you…….why don’t you sign up?” Moore wrote. “Get on out there and give it a go.”
She concluded her message with a reminder rooted in Biblical truth.
“Umpires are not perfect,” Moore wrote. “We never will be. But guess what? No one is.”
Sadly, this attack was not an isolated incident. Earlier this month, a video shared on social media showed a referee being attacked by players and spectators at a youth basketball game in Lithonia, Georgia.

According to TMZ Sports, the victim needed 30 stitches after the attack. Kenneth Tarver, the founder of an organization called KB Sports that helped set up the tournament, promised to make future events “safer for the officials.”
Unprovoked attacks are never acceptable, but they are especially disgusting when they come against people who are sacrificing their time to help kids be able to play sports. This violence needs to stop for the good of both youth athletes and those who work with them.

'Disgusting': Youth Basketball Referee Rushed to Hospital After Players and Adults Brutally Beat Him
An incident at a Georgia youth basketball game can be entered into evidence if there was doubt about the erosion of authority at all levels of American society.
On Sunday, players and fans ganged up on a referee during a youth basketball game that was played at Stronghold Christian Church in Lithonia, Georgia.
In a video shared on social media, the referee was chased around the court and then corned until he went down as players and fans — both youth and adults — hit and kicked him.
None of the bystanders — including two other referees — stepped in to help him.

— NoPauseTv (@NoPauseTv) April 4, 2022
Kenneth Tarver, one of the organizers of the basketball tournament at which the attack took place, said the referee who was attacked needed 30 stitches, according to TMZ Sports.
He said the team of eighth-graders that launched the attack has been banned from future tournaments that he operates.
The church said that it only hosted the event.
“It is truly unfortunate about the turn of events that took place during the basketball game held at our facility this weekend,” Senior Pastor Benjamin Gaither said in a statement, according to WXIA-TV in Atlanta.
“We open our doors to serve our community and our goal is to provide an atmosphere conducive for enjoyment, enrichment, etc.,” Gaither said. “While we can not control people, it is our hope and prayer that those who enter our facility will conduct themselves in the best manner.
“Our prayers go out to all those involved in this current situation.”
Police were investigating the incident, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.
Youth basketball coach Paris Cherry said he “was appalled” at the violence shown in the video.
“It was a very scary video,” he said, according to WSB. “To see the adults instigate and then the kids follow up to the point where it was the kids who chased down the referee at the end of the video, it’s just disgusting. And it seems like there wasn’t any adult trying to break it up.”
Although the video of the attack showed a particularly brutal assault, Ernie Yarborough, assistant executive director for the Georgia High School Association, said assaults of all kinds are becoming far too common.
“It’s becoming too commonplace now that we’re having contest officials be assaulted by parents, players, coaches,” he said. “It was very disturbing for me to see that.”
“It is an issue that we see more and more, especially in the last four or five years,” Yarborough said. “What’s happening in our society to cause people to react like that over a game of basketball?
“If you don’t know how to handle failure, then you’re going to have a tough time in your regular life.”
Yarborough said that without referees, there are no games.
“It’s important that you do have an adequate number of officials to cover all those games or else you’re you become restricted on the days you can play and the number of games you can play and the levels of teams that any respective school may have,” he said.
