Currently writing a fan-fic about noodles. What has my life come to?

I realize I kind of left you all hanging with that last post. Not to worry - the duck head didn’t kill me! I’ve just been quite busy since I last posted. 

The four week MSU course ended on Friday and since then I’ve moved from my old apartment (tear) to a hotel closer to campus. The impetus for the move is that now we’re all participating in something Sichuan University (SCU) calls University Immersion Program (UIP). More on that to come in subsequent posts, but essentially it’s a two week cultural exchange where SCU invites students and faculty from all over the world to come and teach and learn together. It’s actually very amazing and I feel really excited to be a part of it! I’ve been told that no other university in China is doing something like this, so that’s pretty neat.

Anyway, the photos above come from a dinner I had with Lulu (my Mandarin teacher) last week. The name of the restaurant is something to the effect of “weird taste noodle”. Obviously you know I was on board. This all came about because Lulu and I were talking a few weeks back about my love for food and food culture. She asked if I had tried a “fly restaurant” to which I replied “no, what is that”? 

Turns out it’s exactly what it sounds like - a place where flies run rampant, meaning it’s not necessarily up to code if you will. Naturally I was excited about this idea and understood I would need a local to take me to such a place. Hence “weird taste noodle” restaurant became a destination. She said it’s well-liked by locals, so we had to go early. 

It’s a good thing she was with me as the all-Mandarin menu was written on a board tacked to the wall and the employees spoke no English. I would have been at a loss if I tried to go by myself. We ordered two types of noodles, a cold soup, and dessert. My favorite noodles were the spicy ones (naturally) that had rabbit meat - very tender! The other noodles has pork meatballs, but the flavor was akin to chicken noodle soup. BOR-ING! My palate has heavily adjusted to the spicy, numbing flavors of Sichuan food, so I wasn’t enthralled by those noodles. The soup was made of mashed red beans and was decent, but I didn’t fawn over it. The dessert is a very traditional thing served here in the summer that you can find everywhere. It’s called liang gao, and it’s like a gelatin with black sugar. So tasty and refreshing! 

There were two tiny kittens wandering the noodle shop the whole time, and at one point we were joined by one of them. Definitely something not allowed in the US - cats in restaurants!

CONTINUE READING FOR MY MOST IMPORTANT DISCOVERY THUS FAR:

So. There’s a restaurant in Lansing that serves Sichuan cuisine. It truly looks like it’s been shuttered every time we go, but it honestly is the best food we’ve found outside of Chicago since we moved. The first time we went we had the server order for us since he is originally from Chengdu and we figured he wouldn’t steer us wrong. He most certainly did not. Specifically, he recommended we try the “cold noodle salad”. I know what you’re thinking and we thought it too, what the heck is a noodle salad and why is it cold?

Maybe next time let’s not ask so many questions and realize CNS (short hand for cold noodle salad) is sent directly from the heavens themselves. It is the reason Eric and I go back to this restaurant at least once every 1.5 weeks. 

ANYWAY, I was told I would be able to find the equivalent here and I finally located it. Funny enough it’s around the (large city block) corner from my apartment. I’ve now gone two days in a row and truly regret that I didn’t find it sooner. 

The deal is that you walk up and (in my case since I can’t speak Mandarin) point to which type of noodles you want. Then she asks what things you want in/on them. The first time I just made a wide, sweeping gesture to indicate I’d like all of it, please. So she dumps the noodles into a mixing bowl, doles out little bits of each of the sauces and whatever other goodies are there, mixes them with some chop sticks and then dumps it back into the paper cup. 

As I watched her mix them for the first time I thought to myself, “Kate these are probably going to be good.” Then she asked me for 5 RMB and I thought, “even if they aren’t stellar I’m only out about $0.81.” Then she indicated I sit in the back of the tiny shop since she had already packed up the chairs for the day (it was not the normal lunch hour). Then I sat down and had my first bite.

Oh.

My. 

I need to admit that I had to consciously prevent myself from making moaning noises out of pure elation that I had, in fact, located my beloved liang mian (these are pretty much the first two words I requested to learn back in January when I started taking Mandarin classes).

I’m not really sure how to end this post other than to say now that I’ve been thinking about them for the last 10 minutes I want to go out and get some. By the end of this trip my hope is to at least be able to learn my noodle lady’s name. I do know how to say “very good”, so I dropped that a few times just because I couldn’t not express how happy I was.
