Demise of the Hogsmill Riverside Oak. I often used to just stand and ponder life by this large oak tree. Or just touch the ancient bark. So it was sad to discover it had finally fallen when I got home from my travels. The tree split and tumbled over in early October and it turned out to be hollow in the middle. It has been estimated to be between 300 and 600 years old. I like to believe it is 600 old. That would have been 1422 and the War of the Roses. And when it was growing, Henry VIII hunted in the area and built Nonsuch Palace not that far away to be 'no such place' and be better than the likes of Hampton Court, Whitehall Palace and Greenwich Palace. If the acorn had come from a parent tree that was also 600 years old, it would have been the 9th century with King Alfred the Great about to come to power. And Ewell is the saxon for well or spring (Hogsmill springs in Ewell). And if the acorn of that tree had come from another tree that was 600 years old, it would have been around 222AD and the height of the Roman empire in Britain. And Stane Street, the Roman road from London to Chichester, first headed the spring of the Hogsmill river nearby. So I could imagine Roman soldiers resting under the shade of oak trees by the stream! #hogsmill #hogsmillriverside #hogsmillopenspace #hogsmillnaturereserve #ewell #oak #oaktree #ancientoak #stanestreet #ewellspring #nonsuchpalace (at Hogsmill Riverside) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnErb53DxVB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I popped to the post office earlier to send out some samples and on my way back to the car I walked through Bourne Hall park which I haven't been to for a few years. Silly really because it's a 10 minute walk from my house. I've been there many times in the past on the way home from infant school with my daughter and for family Sunday morning strolls. We go to other parks with Albert, our Schnauzer, so it's not as though we don't go to parks we just haven't been here for a while. It's easy to forget what's on your doorstep, right under your nose. We're very lucky here, we do have a lot of green space and I think it's very important to be in it as often as possible. I nipped into Bourne Hall as, again, I hadn't been inside for a long time. It's a Grade II listed building open since the 70's and has the look of a crash landed flying saucer. The museum inside is amazing with so much history across many years on show. I wonder what the area would be like had Nonsuch Palace not been pulled down. A huge tourist attraction no doubt. Many of our areas a full of history we just need to try to make time to get out and learn about it. #ewell #epsom #surrey #history #museum #archeology #nonsuchpalace #suffragette #mindfulness #learn (at Ewell Village)

I've mentioned Nonsuch Park previously as the site of Nonsuch Palace. Built by Henry VIII to be 'no such place' it was finally sold off for building materials for gambling debts of Barbara Villiers. She was the Countess of Castlemaine, the principal mistress of Charles II who rivalled the Queen until she was shunted off to Nonsuch Palace as Charles favoured younger mistresses. What I never realised, until recently (it is not on the noticeboard), that a key part of history happened here when the Treaty of Nonsuch was signed on 10th August 1585 between Elizabeth 1st and Dutch rebels against Spanish rule. It resulted in the formation of the Dutch Republic and was a spark for the Anglo-Spanish war between Elizabeth and Philip of Spain that ultimately led to the Spanish Armada. #Nonsuch #nonsuchpark #nonsuchpalace #barbaravilliers #treatyofnonsuch (at Nonsuch Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeGiSr0DzL_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
