Fitness Friday Motivation: “Breathe”: Proper breathing is a very important part of exercise, whether the activity is aerobic or anaerobic in nature. Allowing the body to efficiently process oxygen has many benefits, among them: building stamina and endurance, which in turn can also lead to gains in strength. It can also assist in faster recovery from high intensity exercises, helping to regulate heart rate. To Kill time or Treasure it?
“Don’t wish your life away,” my dad always said
Everyone for the first time is literally in the same boat--many with kids home all day, every day, trying to keep busy between attempts to school from home (Home school families enjoying business as usual in that regard) while possibly trying to work, even. Today, I heard on the radio a woman talking about activities to do with the kids to keep them busy and engaged.  She said “to kill time with your kids...” And she had some great suggestions! But, I heard that expression, “kill time” and it just jarred me. I started to think that for many this time is a gift...a gift of time together, time away from a packed daily itinerary. Time given back to us, somehow. Then, I started to hate this phrase and even more, feared it may possibly be offensive to God, who gives us time as a gift. Instead of “killing time” (which I know is but an innocent expression for most), I thought about how to express a given, newly opened window (perhaps a gaping hole for some) of free time, and what it means to want to use it. Would I leverage, value, maximize, optimize, treasure it? What can I say to use this time that dropped into our laps, uninvited by most, to our benefit?   For many, myself included, we’d like an end-date because we want to start the countdown to being freed from the prison a microscopic killer has placed us in. But, instead, maybe we should take the situation we are in, and just make the most of it. How many folks complain there is not time for a goal, an activity, a project, even just to finish a much desired book or clean out a certain closet.  My dad always said, since I was young and he was still a young man, whenever I said, “I can’t wait til...” (and that could be fore something to be over, or something else to begin), “Never wish your life away.”  He valued every single day, busy or not. Unexpected snow days or hurricanes leaving use power-less on Long Island with cold showers and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches--this was time to “finish that book” or “week out that garden” or whatever. I made a commitment today while listening to that radio show: I am never going to “kill time” again. I will treasure it, even if that treasure is a nap or some relaxing time doing nothing.
