Right Where You Left Me
Summary: Marc Breaks Your Heart and Leave You Haunted
Marc × reader
Warnings: Angst. Like a shit ton of it. I may have almost cried. Also implementing some lines (sort of) from sad romance songs.
Part II is up BTW - its called happier x happier
Friends get break up, friends get married Strangers get born, strangers get buried
Trends change, rumours fly through new skies
But I'm right where you left me
Today was supposed to be a happy day. You hadn't seen Marc in months, as he'd been doing some private security work in Egypt, under his former officer Raul Bushman, and even though you were used to him being away months at a time, you still got nervous every time you were reunited, and today, especially, you could feel your heart pound.
As you reflected on it later, maybe at the time it had been your body's way of warning you. To turn back, stay in bed all day, not meet Marc at that little restaurant you both loved to go to.
He'd been acting distant for a while. And at first, you thought it'd just been a bad day. But then, a bad day turned into a bad week, and almost a month had passed, and nothing was the same. Whenever you texted him, Marc's answers seemed short, more calculated, like he was having to put effort into spending time with you when it should just come naturally. Still, you were positive that whatever it was bothering him, you would sort it out today when you saw each other. Your relationships had grown so strong because of your ability to talk and communicate with each other.
Matches burn after the other
Pages turn and stick to each other
Wages earned and lessons learned
But I, I'm right where you left me
You blew out the candles in your shared apartment, a lavender scent, bought just so you could make it smell nicer before closing your book and stretching. You had to hurry if you wanted to make it to the airport in time to pick him up. Then, onto the little café right next to the local Barnes and Noble. It was a tradition started when he first started going on tours with the navy. You'd always pick him up at the airport, and he'd buy you a new book, and you two would go to the café for drinks and to talk. In those moments, though the entire world was going by, it felt like all there was was him and his deep brown eyes.
After getting dressed, you headed over to your car and pulled out of the drive, leaving as early as possible. Marc didn't text you when he made landfull, but that didn't matter because you spotted him in front of the airport waiting anyway. You quickly parked and ran up to him, giving him a tight hug, but even though he hugged back, something felt different. You shrugged it off, thinking it was just you. He put his suitcase in the trunk, and climbed into the passenger seat next to you as you pulled out into the main road.
"So do you wanna drop your things home and change, then go to the café, or go there first and maybe get lunch on the way home?" You asked, looking out ahead, to make sure you were turning safely
"Do we have to go to the café today?" He asked "I'm not really feeling it."
You were a little surprised by Marc's answer. Normally he was the one suggesting you go. Thinking he was just in a grumpy mood, you encouraged him
"Oh, come on, it's tradition."
"Fine." He sighed, his reaction hurting you a little, even though you acted like it didn't. Finally, you pulled up to the café and entered, Marc following suit, the comforting smell of cinemmon and coffee warming your heart.
Help, I'm still at the restaurant
Still sitting in a corner I haunt
Cross-legged in the dim light
They say, "What a sad sight"
You made way for the little booth in the corner by the window, where you always sat, since Marc liked to watch the world go by. You smiled at him as you sat down, though he didn't smile back. 'Maybe he didn't see it...' You thought, before one of the waiter's came up to you, asking what you wanted
"Can I have a hot chocolate please?"
"Sure. What about you sir?"
Marc was staring out the window, completely deaf to the waiter's question
"Marc." You shook his arm a little.
"What?" His eyes flickered between you and the waiter "Oh, sorry. Gimme a coffee please."
The waiter went off quickly.
That was weird. He normally got the same as you. Hot chocolate.
I, I swear you could hear a hair pin drop
Right when I felt the moment stop
Glass shattered on the white cloth
Everybody moved on
Marc didn't make any conversation like he normally did, so you decided to sart. You asked him about his time in Egypt, but his answers were short, so after the waiter delivered the drinks, you changed the topic onto yourself, feeling a little awkward. You were just telling him about work when he burst out:
"I met someone."
Time stood still.
I, I stayed there
Dust collected on my pinned-up hair
They expected me to find somewhere
Some perspective, but I sat and stared
"What do you mean?" You asked, though you knew what he meant.
"I met someone," he repeated, slightly louder "In Egypt. Layla. Her name's Layla."
You felt the tears forming, but you wouldn't let them fall. Not now. He couldn’t see you weak.
"How long?" You asked, just stirring your hot chocolate carefully
"What?"
"How long have you loved her. When did you figure it out?"
"Y/N" Marc sighed, leaning back "It doesn't matter."
"Marc, if I'm going to give you up forever to another woman, I deserve to know how long you've loved her."
He sighed again
"I don't know. I didn't plan this," he replied, saying the last part hurriedly."I met her through work, and then, you know, we kept spending more time together -
"And you forgot about me."
"Y/N it's not that simple."
"Isn't it? Another woman came along, and I wasn't important anymore."
"That's not true. It's just different with her."
"How?" You asked."How is any different Marc? Does she sacrifice her sleep and comfort you when you have nightmares or panic attacks? Did she sacrifice a job to be closer to you? Did she sacrifice her dreams so you can live yours? What's so different about her, Marc?"
"Because, the way I love Layla, I can't love you!" He finally snapped, though not loud enough for everyone to hear him.
You couldn't speak. You couldn't move. It was like there was this heavy, depressed weight over you, ridding you of any power.
"And I appreciate everything you've done for me. I'm sorry, Y/N. But you deserve better... Someone who can love you better."
He moved to hold your hand, but you moved away from him, haunted. Frozen.
'I deserve you.' You wanted to say, to scream it out. 'I've been there for you through everything. Not Laila.'
Right where you left me
You left me no, oh, you left me no
You left me no choice but to stay here forever
You left me, you left me no, oh, you left me no
You left me no choice but to stay here forever
Marc stood up, his coffee still untouched. A part of you knew this would be the last time you saw him. But you couldn't move. You wanted to. Hold his hand, bring him back to you, and make him forget Layla. But, you knew, in the pit of your desperate little heart it was. Over.
"I'll my things from the apartment tomorrow."
You couldn't even respond, but your eyes went blurry. He took the keys, got his suitcases out of the car, and returned them to you, almost hesitating.
"Y/N, I-m
"Just go. Please Marc. Just go."
So he did.
You stayed in that café all morning, all afternoon, all evening, all night. The world came and went. And everything was still there. The coffee Marc had gone cold. Yours had been finished earlier in an attempt to console yourself.
If it wasn't for the fact that they had to close at 11, you would have stayed there all night too. You didn't want to go home. You didn't want to face the mind-numbing emptiness of your apartment right now, but you were the one paying for it, so you might as well.
You drove home in silence, parking your car next to your building, before taking the lift up to your floor. For some reason, before you turned the door, you had this strange hope. That Marc would be there, making dinner, that it had all been some terrible but dream, but as you stepped inside, you were faced with the fact that this wasn't some typical nightmare, but your new reality, and so for the first time all day, you let yourself crack, and the tears roll down.
Did you ever hear about the girl who got frozen?
Time went on for everybody else, she won't know it
She's still 23 inside her fantasy
How it was supposed to be
Did you hear about the girl who lives in delusion?
Break-ups happen every day, you don't have to lose it
She's still 23 inside her fantasy
And you're sitting in front of me
A few days after Marc had gotten his things (which had been done with his spare key while you were at work, which he had left on the doormat) you had turned down all the pictures framed of you and him on the shelves and kitchen counter. You didn't have the heart to throw them away. You wanted to, but just couldn't. Your friends had tried to cheer you up, take you out to parties, or introduce you to new guys, but nothing worked. The parties were packed with people, but you found them empty and lifeless, and the dates paled in compared to Marc. Your friends eventually grew tired of hearing that you missed him and told you to "just get over him." But it wasn't that simple. Marc Spector wasn't just another guy. He was your solar system; your universe. There'd never be another him
At the restaurant, when I was still the one you want
Cross-legged in the dim light, everything was just right
I, I could feel the mascara run
You told me that you met someone
Glass shattered on the white cloth
Everybody moved on
So you ended up at the fateful café where Marc broke up with you. You didn't know why. It was where he shattered you in two, but you had also had some of your happiest memories there. When he told you he liked you, then loved you. You could see it now, the dim light reflecting off his bright eyes. It was perfect. Life with him was perfect.
Help, I'm still at the restaurant
Still sitting in a corner I haunt
Cross-legged in the dim light
You revisited that café every day, for you don't know how long. Days, weeks, months, maybe even a year. You were so caught up in him. You couldn't help it. You had never been so happy. Never will be again. Sometimes, when it was dark or rainy, you thought you saw him leaning against a streetlight opposite the café. But then you blinked, and nothing was there. You wondered at that point who you were looking out for by coming there. Why were you at that stupid little place? He didn't go to it anymore. Because of you. He wanted a new life. With someone else. You were the past. Layla was the present. Had your future with him been a lie?
I, I stayed there
Dust collected on my pinned-up hair
I'm sure that you got a wife out there
Kids and Christmas, but I'm unaware
'Cause I'm right where
I cause no harm, mind my business
If our love died young, I can't bear witness
And it's been so long
But if you ever think you got it wrong
A few years had passed, and you were still there. You were sure Marc had moved on by now. Sure, he and Layla were married. Were happy. Maybe she was expecting. Sometimes, you imagined it had been you. You he had chosen to love above everyone else. You hadn't found anyone new. Even though you had tried, it was almost like you were still waiting for him. In case he came back. To you.
I'm right where you left me
You left me no, oh, you left me no
You left me no choice but to stay here forever
You left me
You left me no, oh, you left me no
You left me no choice but to stay here forever
But you knew you would always be there. The world would come and go. Dynasties would rise and fall. People would be born and live, break up, and marry, right here in this quaint little shop. But you would stay here, forever in pain, while Marc spent his forever in love.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was going to make a post about the evolution of the 6th Division office over time, because these screencaps have been sitting on my desktop for months and that is ridiculous (that’s the part about this that is ridiculous), but I think instead I want to talk about the likelihood that there is some enterprising shinigami out there making it as a freelance furniture designer/pirate.
Evolution of the 6th Division Office Over Time
One might assume that the Kuchiki office has existed unchanged since time immemorial, reflecting the their lengthy tenure as being Voted #1 Noble Family by Kuchiki Magazine, but that’s where you’d be WRONG, because Byakuya has an entirely different odd little side table than Ginrei! He has an entirely DIFFERENT uncomfortable chair! See the rounded top edges of Ginrei’s? And idk if we see the slatback for Ginrei’s, but Byakuya’s version seems to be wanting to do the chair version of what the window panes are doing (which cast dramatic shadows when the moonlight hits just right, so you know that’s intentional), peak chair flex.
Tumblr media
Does it make up for the addition(?) of two of the most hideous couches in the Seireitei? Up for debate. But I think Byakuya’s couches might be worse than the 10th couches and the 3rd couches. I’m also convinced that these couches see very little use, because unlike the 10th Division couches, who is napping on these? It’s probably never occurred to Byakuya that those might be a place one might sleep, or nap. The office is not a place for relaxing; they don’t call it a workplace for nothing, and there are far more amenable facilities back home. I think Renji could probably make these into napcouches, because he’s a hero, but he’s very tall, probably taller than the couch is long, and the arms/couchback are cut such that it would be very difficult to use them as head/legrests without just sliding off the front of the couch. These couches are like the couch version of carceral design benches in parks/airports to dissuade people from sleeping on them.
Anyway, what I meant to say is that the 6th office we get in The Kouga Era is different than the one we get in Zanpakutou Rebellion Era, but given how quickly 10th goes through furniture it’s hard to say whether these changes reflect a change in leadership/change in style over centuries, or the whimsy of a moment. Tragically inconclusive findings, which is why I’d instead direct your attention to my favorite element of the 6th Office:
The Odd Little Side Table
Tumblr media
[Ginrei, staring directly into the hidden camera someone put in this office]
Let’s be real here, this is a really weird way to store papers, and not a particularly ergonomic one. Functionally it’s weird; aesthetically, it’s weird, because the massive solidity of the window-centered desk makes the odd little side table feel out of place, and unbalances the room (especially since the couches are on that side, too?).
My guess is that it’s not intended to function as a side table, but as a desk--the kind you’d sit at on the floor on a zabuton, as some shinigami seem to employ in their personal quarters. In Ginrei’s case, maybe that was the OG furnishing in the room, and the giant brick desk is “relatively” new to the office. Or is this the Seireitei version of an adjustable sitting/standing desk, except it’s two desks and they are sitting/sitting desks? Is that Renji’s desk? Is that the snack table that just happens to have a bunch of paper on it in this moment? I don’t know, but it’s my favorite part of this office.
The Door Pull Mogul
But this is really what I’ve been thinking about this morning. The fact of these... door pulls?? KALLRÖR FROM IKEA IS THAT YOU. We know 6th has got their fancy puzzle-key gate, so maybe this mod, Japandi situation we’ve got going with these doors isn’t unexpected, but why are the interior doors to the 6th Division office outfitted like a Hostelling International property:
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong, I love whatever the Seireitei’s “eras tour? we are ALL eras” architecture and technology, but I’m really interested in what possessed the 6th Division that they wanted to change from sliding doors (I say “change” because the 10th still has sliding doors, and I assume at some point in the past they all did) to doors with IKEA handles. This seems like a horrible choice for a door with any weight to it--how do you grip and pull this? There’s hardly enough clearance between handle and door for even the tiniest hands to grip it. These are cabinet handles. But sure, let’s set that aside.
Inasmuch as the 6th likely values reliable tradition, modernizing one’s interior design not because it got blown up but just because you can is probably one of the best ways you can prove you’re wealthy in this place. Because what else are they going to do? Buy crypto?
So I love the idea that some shinigami realized that they actually did not enjoy talking to ghost after ghost, and they actually did not enjoy risking dismemberment and death, but while on patrol in the Living World found that they did like mail-order catalogs (and later, the Internet and like, Fiverr or something), and got really into creating lookbooks. And they joined up with some equally enterprising shinigami with an equal distaste for death, who had the hookup with all the artisans in town, and they started handmaking and individually-crafting Living World mass design.
Instead of beginning with the bespoke furniture and finding ways of making the mass market, ready-to-wear versions of spoons and couches and door pulls, they went in the other direction and pulled the most popular designs from the Living World (AKA the cheapest and most readily available, but from an alternative perspective the most reflective of the cultural zeitgeist) and pirated them over to Soul Society, to be reinvented and remade as bespoke, very expensive furniture.

Of Belgian Waffles and Second Chances
Summary: After learning about the Merge, Josie leaves the Salvatore Boarding School behind her and heads for Belgium.
Prompt: Canon Rewrite
Word Count: 773
---
“Josie?”
Josie turned to see her ex-girlfriend, Penelope Park. Penelope was shocked to see her, Josie could tell. It’s not surprising, Josie has shocked herself that she’s here.
“Hey, Penelope,” Josie smiles.
“What are you doing here?” Penelope asks as she walks up to Josie.
Josie smiles tightly, “I did a lot of thinking after you left. My dad told me what the Merge is, and I came to a decision.”
Penelope’s face drops, “I’m sorry.”
“What for?” Josie asks, confused.
“I should have told you what the Merge was, but I just couldn’t. I couldn’t be the one to tell you it was between you and Lizzie,” Penelope explains.
Josie looks down at her hands, “It wasn’t on you to tell me. I should have known all along. My parents never should have hidden this from us.”
Penelope nods in agreement, but she says nothing else. Josie isn’t sure where to take the conversation. She should probably explain why she’s in Belgium at Penelope’s new school.
“Um, so anyways,” Josie says, “I decided I needed to be away from my family. My parents lied to me, and knowing what we are going to have to go through, I just can’t face Lizzie right now.”
“That’s understandable.”
“Yeah, I thought so,” Josie takes a deep breath before she says in a rush, “I enrolled here.”
Penelope’s eyes widened, “Here?”
Josie nods, “Yes, I just wanted to get away from Mystic Falls, and this was the first place that came to my mind.”
Penelope smirks, “Oh, and what attracted you to Belgium?”
Josie returns her look and shrugs her shoulders, “There was someone that I wanted to see again.”
They stand there for a while, just smiling at each other. It had been a while since the two of them could just be. There was no other drama, nothing pulling them away from each other. Everything was out in the open now.
A student coughing brings them out of their haze and Penelope offers her arm, “Let me show you around.”
Josie links their arms and Penelope shows her the campus. It isn’t as big as the Salvatore School, but it’s catered to witches. Josie had looked at her schedule, and she is excited to learn so much more about her powers and her heritage.
“Do you like it here?” Josie asks Penelope as they walk.
Penelope smiles, “I’m liking it a lot more, now.”
Josie turns her face to hide her blush. Penelope was the only one who could bring this reaction out of her. This is what Josie wanted, some time to focus on herself, to figure out what she wanted. She wanted to learn to be a little bit selfish, and she knew who she wanted to teach her.
“A noble quest,” Penelope smiles, “I shall take my role with the utmost sincerity, I promise you, Josette.”
“You know,” Penelope says, “There’s a great place that has the best waffles. Josie, you need a true Belgian waffle now that you are in Belgium. Please tell me that you haven’t had one yet, I want to be there for your first one.”
“You’re in luck, I haven’t been anywhere yet,” Josie says, “My mom picked me up at the airport and dropped me off here. That’s all I’ve seen of Belgium so far. You’ll have to be my guide.”
They continue to walk with their arms linked and Josie asks, “Is this an all-girls school?” She has only seen female students walking around the campus.
Penelope throws Josie a look, “Did you do any research on this place before you jumped on the plane?”
“It had everything I was looking for,” Josie shrugs. Penelope still doesn’t seem to understand, so Josie clarifies, “You.”
Penelope pauses in her steps, “You really came all the way here just for me?”
Josie looks away. There is no other place she wanted to be, but she wasn’t sure where she and Penelope stood, “Yeah. After the whole mess, you’re the person I wanted to see.” Admitting it was hard, but she needed to do it. Lies had messed up her life for too long, she needed everything to be out in the open.
“Well,” Penelope muses, “then I guess our waffle excursion might be a date.”
“I was hoping it would be,” Josie blushes.
An honest smile shines across Penelope’s face as she confirms, “It’s a date.”
“Perfect,” Josie says as she uses her hands to draw Penelope in. The kiss feels like coming home. Nothing in her life has made sense since she found out about the Merge, but now it all clicks into place.

Operation Allied Force
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) carried out an aerial bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. The air strikes lasted from 24 March 1999 to 10 June 1999. The bombings continued until an agreement was reached that led to the withdrawal of Yugoslav armed forces from Kosovo, and the establishment of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, a UN peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. The official NATO operation code name was “Operation Allied Force” whereas the United States called it “Operation Noble Anvil”; in Yugoslavia the operation was incorrectly called “Merciful Angel” (Serbian: Милосрдни анђео / Milosrdni anđeo) as a result of a misunderstanding or mistranslation.
NATO’s intervention was prompted by Yugoslavia’s bloodshed and ethnic cleansing of Albanians, which drove the Albanians into neighbouring countries and had the potential to destabilize the region. Yugoslavia’s actions had already provoked condemnation by international organisations and agencies such as the UN, NATO, and various INGOs. Yugoslavia refused to sign the Rambouillet Accords which was offered as an initial justification for NATO’s use of force. NATO countries attempted to gain authorisation from the UN Security Council for military action, but were opposed by China and Russia, who indicated that they would veto such a measure. As a result, NATO launched its campaign without the UN’s approval, stating that it was a humanitarian intervention. The UN Charter prohibits the use of force except in the case of a decision by the Security Council under Chapter VII, or self-defence against an armed attack – neither of which were present in this case.
An important portion of the war involved combat between the Yugoslav Air Force and the opposing air forces from NATO. United States Air Force F-15s and F-16s flying from Italian airforce bases attacked the defending Yugoslav fighters, mainly MiG-29s, which were in poor condition due to a lack of spare parts and maintenance. Other NATO forces also contributed to the air war.
During the night of 24/25 March 1999: Yugoslav Air Force scrambled five MiG-29s to counter the initial attacks. Two fighters that took off from Niš Airport were vectored to intercept targets over southern Serbia and Kosovo were dealt with by NATO fighters. The MiG-29 flown by Maj. Dragan Ilić was damaged; he landed with one engine out and the aircraft was later expended as a decoy. The second MiG, flown by Maj. Iljo Arizanov, was shot down by an USAF F-15C piloted by Lt. Col. Cesar Rodriguez. A pair from Batajnica Air Base (Maj. Nebojša Nikolić and Maj. Ljubiša Kulačin) were engaged by USAF Capt. Mike Shower who shot down Nikolić while Kulačin evaded several missiles fired at him, while fighting to bring his malfunctioning systems back to working order. Eventually realising that he could not do anything, and with Batajnica AB under attack, Kulačin diverted to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, hiding his aircraft under the tail of a parked airliner.[91] The fifth and last MiG-29 to get airborne that night was flown by Maj. Predrag Milutinović. Immediately after take-off his radar failed and electrical generator malfunctioned. Shortly after, he was warned of being acquired by fire control radar, but he eluded the opponent by several evasive manoeuvres. Attempting to evade further encounters, he approached Niš Airport, intending to land, when he was possibly hit by an 2K12 Kub in a friendly fire incident, but more probably he was shot down by a KLU F-16AM flown by Maj. Peter Tankink and forced to eject.
In the morning of 25 March, Maj. Slobodan Tešanović stalled his MiG-29 while landing on Ponikve Airbase after a re-basing flight. He ejected safely.
During the war Yugoslav strike aircraft J-22 Oraos and G-4 Super Galebs performed some 20–30 combat missions against the KLA in Kosovo at treetop level causing some casualties. During one of those missions on 25 March 1999, Lt. Colonel Života Ðurić was killed when his J-22 Orao hit a hill in Kosovo. It was never firmly established whether an aircraft malfunction, pilot error or if enemy action (by KLA) was the cause (NATO never claimed they shot it down).
In the afternoon of 25 March 1999 two Yugoslav MiG-29s took off from Batajnica to chase a lone NATO aircraft flying in the direction of the Bosnian border. They crossed the border and were engaged by two US F-15s. Both MiGs were shot down by Captain Jeff Hwang. One MiG pilot, Major Slobodan Perić, having evaded at least one missile before being hit ejected, was later smuggled back to Yugoslavia by the Republika Srpska police. The other pilot, Captain Zoran Radosavljević, did not eject and was killed.

Hello! I am currently working on a modern au and I thought you might want to hear about it!
Not sure if all end up writing it but here are the basics
Whitestone is a city in Canada and the main setting. The setting has low magic.
Percy's family is really rich but not Noble.
The briarwoods were a church pastor couple at the church the de rollos went to that befriended them and then murdered them after forging their will to put everything in their names.
They scared Cassandra into silence so she wouldn't snitch to the cops.
After the briarwoods are defeated through a legal battle Vox machina moves in to a seven bedroom penthouse that was meant for Julius after he got married. Cassandra lives in the old family home.
Percy works as a airport mechanic
Vex is a park ranger at the suntree National Forest
Trinket is a Newfoundland dog
Pike is a med student
Vax is a locksmith
Grog is a construction worker
Keyleth works in the botany collections at the local museum
scanlan has an onlyfans
Cassandra is a law student and works at Barnes & Noble part-time for experience
Gilmore is the owner of a department store and met vax when he accidentally locked himself out of the department store and had to call a locksmith.
Ships are Percy/vex, scanlan/Pike, and Gilmore/vax and maybe Gilmore/vax/keyleth
oh hello!!! i love that this has started a string of headcanons being thrown at me, this is wonderful actually. if anyone else wants to do so, please feel free!!! i love hearing about ideas :)
ANYWAY ANYWAY i LOVE the concept of the briarwoods as these like. well i'm reading it as they are the couple that acts so pious and so neighborly (for context: i grew up going to a southern christian church) when they're actually The Worst, and using that cover to get away with doing Shady Shit. people usually make them just corrupt businessmen which also works, but there are other corrupt systems for them to manipulate - and this kinda parallels how they basically started a cult in canon fjnkrjgnkr
vax as a locksmith is snagging my attention tbh!! that's super cool!!! it also has the potential for an Angsty Setup, or even just an intriguing setup, with vax dancing around the law and somehow making a job out of it. or even using the job as a cover. but that's me spitballing lol
vex as a park ranger is also so !!! i'm just picturing her out in the woods with all these leaves in her hair, looking just a LITTLE bit wild but very happy about it. park rangers (in the US at least, and based off of quick google searches) don't tend to have the best salaries, so it wouldn't work in a lot of modern AUs (vex is Very aware of finances and wants to keep everyone afloat and fed, wants to keep the lights on, so i can't see her taking a self-indulgent job over higher-paying opportunities), but if they have this inheritance in this AU, then i could definitely see her taking a job as a ranger.
VAX AND GIL AS THE "OOPS I LOCKED MYSELF OUT OF MY SHOP" IS SO CUTE!! and it's made even better by the fact that you know, despite gilmore having actively locked himself out, vax would be the more awkward of the two. he's a mess <3 ALSO ALSO i will Politely encourage you towards vax/gil/kiki, simply because i think vax deserves a boyfriend AND a girlfriend to hold his hands <3
this au gives me very comfy and wholesome vibes (once the briarwoods are yeeted from the picture) <33 thank you for sharing it with me!!

A powerful and engaging exploration of contemporary Asian American identity through interwoven stories set in a teeming Chicago airport, written by award-winning and bestselling East and Southeast Asian American authors including Linda Sue Park, Grace Lin, Erin Entrada Kelly, Traci Chee, and Ellen Oh. Flying Lessons meets Black Boy Joy.
“The individual narratives are consistently engaging and rewarding, and together they form a unique collection of interconnected stories about young, contemporary Asian American characters.”—Booklist, Starred Review
An incident at a TSA security check point sows chaos and rumors, creating a chain of events that impacts twelve young Asian Americans in a crowded and restless airport. As their disrupted journeys crisscross and collide, they encounter fellow travelers—some helpful, some hostile—as they discover the challenges of friendship, the power of courage, the importance of the right word at the right time, and the unexpected significance of a blue Stratocaster electric guitar.
Twelve powerhouse Asian American authors explore themes of identity and belonging in the entwined experiences of young people whose family roots may extend to East and Southeast Asia, but who are themselves distinctly American.
Written by Linda Sue Park, Erin Entrada Kelly, Grace Lin, Traci Chee, Mike Chen, Meredith Ireland, Mike Jung, Minh Le, Ellen Oh, Randy Ribay, Christina Soontornvat, and Susan Tan, and edited by Ellen Oh.

Lanzarote for History Lovers: Places and Legends You Can't Miss
Tumblr media
Lanzarote, a jewel within the Canary Islands, offers more than just its sun-soaked beaches and lunar landscapes. This island is steeped in history and legends, making it a paradise for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts alike. From ancient fortresses to enchanting tales of the past, Lanzarote holds secrets waiting to be discovered. Here, we embark on a journey through time, highlighting must-visit sites and the legends that breathe life into this captivating island.
Timanfaya National Park: A Geological Wonder
At the heart of Lanzarote's history is Timanfaya National Park, a testament to nature's power. The park's moon-like terrain was formed during the eruptions in the 1730s and is closely tied to local legends. The eruptions are said to have been predicted by a priest, and to this day, the area is enveloped in tales of resilience and rebirth.
A visit to Timanfaya is not just a trek through volcanic landscapes; it's an immersion into the island's vibrant history.
Castillo de San Gabriel: A Sentinel of the Past
Perched on a small islet in Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, Castillo de San Gabriel stands as a sentinel guarding the island's history. Originally built in the 16th century to fend off pirate attacks, it now houses a history museum.
The castle and its museum offer insights into the island's past, from its indigenous inhabitants to the European conquest. Walking through its walls, you're walking through chapters of Lanzarote's history.
Teguise: The Old Capital
The historic town of Teguise, once the capital of Lanzarote, is a labyrinth of history. With cobblestone streets, traditional architecture, and the imposing Santa Barbara Castle, Teguise takes visitors back in time.
The town's market, held every Sunday, is a blend of tradition and modernity, where local crafts and historical tales coexist. Teguise's rich history is also peppered with legends of pirates and noble knights, making every corner a discovery.
Cueva de los Verdes: A Hidden World Below
The Cueva de los Verdes, part of a 6km long lava tube, offers a journey into the underworld of Lanzarote. Formed by volcanic eruptions, these caves were once hideouts for locals from pirate invasions. Legend has it that treasures are hidden within its depths, guarded by the spirits of the past.
The guided tours not only explore the geological formations but also immerse visitors in the myths and legends that surround this underground marvel.
Jardín de Cactus: A Symbol of Adaptation
While not ancient, the Jardín de Cactus, designed by César Manrique, symbolizes Lanzarote's history of adaptation and survival. Housing over 1,000 species of cacti, the garden is set in a former quarry, illustrating how the island's inhabitants have always turned challenges into opportunities. This place, though modern, ties into the island's ethos of living harmoniously with nature, a principle rooted in its history.
The Legend of the Farmer and the Volcano
No visit to Lanzarote is complete without hearing the legend of the farmer who dared to confront Timanfaya. As the story goes, a farmer, witnessing the devastation of his land, sought to appease the volcano with offerings. This tale, woven into the fabric of Lanzarote's culture, speaks to the islanders' respect for nature's might and their resilience in the face of adversity.
Book transfer lanzarote airport to costa teguise and enjoy its rich tapestry of history and legend, is a treasure trove for those eager to delve into the past. Each site and story offers a glimpse into the island's soul, making it a must-visit for history lovers. Whether it's walking through ancient streets, exploring volcanic wonders, or listening to tales of yore, Lanzarote promises an unforgettable journey through time.

The Man Who'd Been of Use
Tumblr media
A woman on my Facebook page announced her intention to live a more spiritual life in the coming year.  The objective was noble, and I wondered how she intended to go about it. For me, spirituality is the daily practice of random acts of kindness.  To illustrate, I offer an experience from a few years ago. My mother lived to be 104. Every Friday, until she reached 101, my habit was to drive her to one of several nearby restaurants as a respite from the bland fare her assisted living facility provided. Indian curries and Eastern fare tickled her palate most.     One December day, we were headed to a restaurant that served the best plates of hummus, kabobs, and falafel in the city. Whether my stomach rumbled in anticipation or the sound I heard came from a sky blackened with clouds I didn’t know, but doubtless a storm was brewing. The mystery was settled as we neared our destination. Without warning, a downpour splattered across my windshield.  I could barely see, yet the sound of sloshing beneath the car’s tires led me to know the streets were becoming rivers. On the pavement, people lowered their umbrellas to eye level, a defense against the rain that left them blind to oncoming traffic.   “Sorry,” I muttered to those caught in the wake of my car’s waves. My courtesy was futile, I knew, but one born of habit.     As traffic was light, I found a parking spot near the restaurant, though it was on the opposite side of the street.  Unfortunately, the rain had already submerged the asphalt, making the crossing look treacherous. Taking hold of my mother’s arm as a precaution when she exited the car, I guided her toward the crosswalk. At the curb, the water was high enough to cover the tops of our shoes.   Seeing no option, I nudged my parent forward, but, objecting to my haste, she wrenched her arm from me.  “You’re going to make me fall,” she complained.  Then, gripping her walker to steady herself, she stepped into the traffic without noticing the stoplight had turned against her. Fortunately, the sharp-eyed driver about to make a right turn spotted her and slammed on his brakes. “Thank you,” I mouthed as we passed in front of him.  He shrugged back at me as if to say, “I have an elderly mother, too.” A blast of perfumed air greeted my parent and me once we entered the restaurant. I heard another rumble, but this time I knew it came from me.   A waiter of olive complexion hurried forward, his hands clasping menus. Little wonder we caught his eye because, though it was noon, the room was empty. Mother and I followed the young man to a table beside a bay window set for four.  Doubtless, he was using us to advertise that the eatery was open. Nevermind. I was glad for the extra space and draped our coats over the backs of the empty chairs beside us, hoping that by the end of our meal, they would have dried to a tolerable dampness.    For nearly an hour, I devoted myself to a buffet comprised of several delights, one that concluded with wedges of baklava and thick coffee. By then, a few customers had staggered in, their garments as bedraggled as airport windsocks.  Swallowing my anxiety along with my coffee, I dared to hope for a sliver of sunlight.         Fate was not on my side, however.  Having paid the bill and rising to assist my mother with her coat, I admit, I dallied, checking to see that each of her buttons was buttoned, then checking again.  With no further reason to delay, I headed for the exit with my parent in tow. Opening the door wide enough to accommodate her walker, I exposed myself to a gust of wind. It was violent enough to blow the hood of my coat from my head and transform my hair into rivulets. Wisely, my mother offered no resistance when I took hold of her arm to guide her into the storm. We proceeded with deliberation, like acrobats on a tightrope, but upon reaching the curb, we discovered our folly. The water being ankle-high, we had no option but to plunge into it. The immersion came as a shock, nonetheless, and for a moment, we struggled to keep our footing.  Once achieved, we advanced, shoulder to shoulder, against the slanted rain.   The lone driver at the traffic light took pity on us, showing no impatience as the signal turned from red to green and back to red. I was grateful to him but tension never left my body until I had grounded my mother on the far pavement, the car a few paces away. I thought the worst was over, but I was wrong.  Bending to unlock the door, I heard the sound of metal bouncing off the concrete behind me. Without looking, I knew my mother had fallen. Even so, I was unprepared for the sight of her lying on her back with her extremities flailing like those of a  doomed beetle.  I knelt beside her to assure myself no bones were broken. Then, I righted the walker and attempted to help her to her feet.  The maneuver proved to be impossible.  Her knees wouldn’t support her.  Next, I tried pulling her up by her arms, using my body as a counterweight, but my 120 pounds were no match against her 170. Scanning the street, I noted it was empty. Not even a car was paused at the stoplight. If I wanted help,  I’d have to return to the restaurant. “Stay put, Mom,” I said, as if she had a choice. Then, I gathered my coat about me and was preparing to dash across the empty thoroughfare when a man rounded the corner. He was headed in our direction. “Sir” I called out to him, “Could you help?  My mother has fallen…” Rather than rush toward us, as I’d expected, the stranger […]
