Herta Müller concusses me again and again. This book with the beautiful title that means "The human is a big pheasant in the world" is in the english version only "The Passport". Romania, in the eighties, the family Windisch of german descent tries to escape the dictatorship of Ceausescus, they only achieve it if the daughter sells her body. . The novel of Müller is the prosaically poetry of the brutal injustice and exercise of power. With a hint of a dull, but not burying melancholia. There are no winners or losers, there is not just a good and a bad. This book and "The Hunger Angel" made Herta Müller my favorite female writer. She tells so much more than only the body moves and the ambience! . "The owls have no rest and the water has no rest", Windisch says. "If she dies, another owl will come to the village. A young and dumb one, which doesn't know the place. She sits on every roof." - "And again, young people have to die", the night guard replies. Windisch can see that the air in front of his face belongs to the night guard. . #hertamüller #nobelprize #literature #igreads #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabooks #thepassport #booklover #ceausescu #instagood #beautiful #photooftheday #visualsoflife #leseempfehlung #literatur #nobelpreisfürliteratur #dermenschisteingroßerfasanaufderwelt #литература #книги #чаушеску #румыния #литература #гертамюллер #читать {unpaid ad}

When we long for something, geographically or ideally, we often paint out the greatest things in our mind, if wanted or not. That happens to the swedish farmers in Selma Lagerlöf’s novel “Jerusalem“, that go to the holy land to find God. As so often in life, the pretty haze falls and dry grounds and disfavor in the people appear. The book from 1901 reads well for believers and nonbelievers. It portrays the life of the real American Colony in Jerusalem, completed by swedish farmers in 1896, and the fictive, venerable family Ingmarsson in Dalarna.
.
Every first son of the Ingmarssons gets named Ingmar and is the heir of the most splendid farm in the village. The protagonist Ingmar, Gerda who he loves, his father, his sister Karin who becomes the leader of the Jerusalem cult, the priest, the teacher and Stark-Ingmar are most important, until Hellgum appears. Hellgum convinces some farmers to join the american cult, to help the poor in Jerusalem until God reappears on earth and takes everyone with him to paradise. So the second part of the novel takes place in the old land, where the Swedes have a totally new life. They get terrified about how much anger and defiance are between the folks in the city. But truly, they found hospitals and accomplish many charities.
.
Lagerlöf’s language is, as usual, very simple and clear, but never flat. As simple as her language, as hand-knitted are the sympathic natures of her figures. Their problems and actions could be out of our time, if they weren’t much closer to nature and more undistracted. A home feeling comes to me in this soulful book, for a place I have never seen. But I confess “Gösta Berling’s saga“ had me a little more with his lightly fairytale character. This novel here is a successful monument for a time that was stamped by emigration and salvation.

A light book! It may seem at the first sight. But it dives deep. The "Journey to the East" by Hermann Hesse. It’s written in the view of a member of "The League", a sect with the rule that nobody is allowed to tell others the intentions of the group. Not even the reader will hear about it. On it’s way to the spiritual Orient the League falls apart. Our member H. H. tries to write down the story of the journey and how they broke up. Their way leads through Switzerland, South Germany and one step later they’re in Damascus and back. Real persons meet literary persons and dragons fly out of pencils while writing. Long after the journey, H. finds the League alive and a twist in the story talks to us about our (sometimes) blurred minds. . Hesse handles his own exit from the artist group in Monte Verità (worth a google) and from his friend Gusto Gräser. He handles the isolation of today’s spiritual human. Seems like a confession with colorful spiritual metaphors. Kafkaesque at first, but it all opens up. . #hermannhesse #hesse #diemorgenlandfahrt #morgenlandfahrt #journeytotheeast #thejourneytotheeast #literature #nobelprizewinner #nobelprize #nobelprizeliterature #classicliterature #monteverita #bookstagram #instabook #bookstagrammer #igreads #guyswhoread #gayswhoread #switzerland #spiritual #leseempfehlung #literatur #nobelpreisgewinner #nobelpreisfürliteratur #литература #букстаграм #германгессе #Паломничествовстранувостока (hier: Montagnola) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2PSybWgw4W/?igshid=1uyvdpizj2yb2

"The Emperor of Portugallia" by the swedish nobelprize winner Selma Lagerlöf was published in 1914. First of all, this german title, maybe invented by a publisher, meaning "Jan's return" is bullshit. The protagonist Jan never goes away and he also does not recover from his mental illness. The plot is beautiful and tragic at the same time: Jan feels an incredible love and duty of protection for his daughter Klara Gulla. To displace the truth that she became a prostitute, he invented an illusion in which she is an Empress and he himself turned into the Emperor of Portugallia. . Selma Lagerlöf's book had the same romantic and light, but also smart kind of energy on me like "Gösta Berling's saga" before. Just that the saga had more landscapes directly connected to emotions. Jan and the other characters in this book undergo many up's and down's in their psyche. They learn many things that are important for religions, like forgiving, but things that also work in atheistic ways of thinking. . An interesting thing is how Lagerlöf manages to portray Jan's insane ideas as emperor in his own view so that they never are ridiculous. The good things he does, coming from his heart, got written in the sight of others. . All together the story had an immense power, but was written in a light and easy way. The kind of book you and your grandmother both love. . #selmalagerlöf #theemperorofportugallia #emperorofportugallia #kejsarnavportugallien #literature #bookstagram #instabook #nobelprizewinner #nobelprizeliterature #nobelprize #guyswhoread #gayswhoread #instagood #beautiful #photooftheday #visualsoflife #leseempfehlung #derkaiservonportugallien #kaiservonportugallien #jansheimkehr #nobelpreisfürliteratur #nobelpreis #литература #книга #сельмалагерлёф #1914 #нобелевскаяпремия #нобелевскаяпремияполитературе https://www.instagram.com/p/BtRKUmpA9OF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ftybb0pc3kpq
