If you ask me, it’s the second-best Biblical film after The Prince of Egypt. Of course, religious fundamentalists absolutely hate it because it “adds things” to the scriptural account and portrays these people as people (the latter is a whole other conversation). Yes, it takes a lot of inspiration from the Book of Enoch and expands on a lot from Genesis 6-9. We have to remember that the account is a mere 96 verses in length, depending on the translation. Virtually no dialogue. Not very cinematic, eh? Would’ve been a half-hour silent film with no depth. We also need to keep in mind Aronofsky is Jewish, and that’s clearly going to influence the story.
Someone said, “I feel like the film’s biggest issue is it tries to be both Hollywood Blockbuster and midrash at the same time.” I agree.
