Sooooo as expected our buddy changed his bio to 11, which supports my speculation that it was (obviously) a countdown to Louis' show.

The lawsuit started off because of finantial reasons, but it was revealed it was more because of fucking creative freedom.

Management tried to reason with him, he didn't back down. And they continued to do so before an article of the 'lawsuit' was made public, he didn't accept any.

Management tried to paint Valentino as 'ungrateful' and that they were the reason he was a star.

When other people tried to get Valentino to work with/for them, his management stopped him by "threatening to extend the contract" (?) which prevented him from acting.

His sexuality was never really questioned due to the many relationships with woman he had (one which literally was a lesbian)

i want to scream and cry and laugh and run and dance and write and read and study and cook and break things and punch a wall without alerting my flatmates and actually feel like I’m close with them without coming across as weird for not getting to know them better the past month and just feel normal

but there is not such thing as truly normal so why do I care so much about being it?

would friends even help me in the long term or just distract me in the moment until we go our separate ways for the night or day or week or lifetime. as much as i love my friends and know they’ll want to help, I don’t want to weigh them down with my wellbeing. Especially since everyone has their own shit to deal with that’s arguably worse than mine. Yet if they said that to me, I’d reply “someone with a broken ankle won’t (or at least shouldn’t) tell someone with a sprained ankle that their pain isn’t real or valid.”

I keep telling myself in class that I’m motivated enough to work on the next project (or reading for my classes) and I even started an idea for one, but I’ll probably scrap it because it was so spur of the moment

and I’m behind on the dictionary project partially because I don’t give a shit, partially because I feel like I’m behind in the class when I’m really not, and partially because I feel like putting it off knowing I’l get it done eventually because I always do

I can boast never using an extension even though it means I’ve stayed up till 3 AM to write two paragraphs, only to stop at 3:30 to take a shower that I was putting off until I finished my work, as though disregarding my body’s health is the way to keep my mind from staying idle

and that was a year ago

now I just feel bad about feeling bad and not doing the things I know will help me

I fucking wrote my 300 level English final paper while my mom was packing up my dorm room so I could go home for winter break and have everything to be abroad. She was so worried seeing me work in the moment, so down to the wire. But so proud that I was able to buckle down and do it. Whereas I felt like shit for not doing it sooner. It was a topic I CHOSE and I LIKED IT. WHY THE FUCK DID I PUT IT OFF>!!>??!? I don’t even remember, probably because of my other, less exciting but way bigger project weighing down my spirit

if I just change my scenery then I’ll probably feel better

go to the common room to be on my computer instead of the same for walls of my room that I’ve decided were better because they’re private and nobody can judge me in here, but they also can’t get to know me and I can’t get anything (or much, I’m somehow doing some of the readings) done. You know, like a few other people do and then I’ll feel weird for only starting to do it now. idk

if I could just find another passion to keep me going, a new show or book

god i need to get the courage to go enjoy the library here. I feel so out of place there. nothing’s worse than feeling like a waste of space and a stupid piece of shit in a university library full of people like me who are probably procrastinating or struggling to finish work or even trying to figure out the English language because they’re from the freaking Netherlands and India and everywhere else

while im just the american in England who is struggling over something I probably wouldn’t feel if my life were just a bit worse. as though switching my life with some starving child in the arctic circle would make me feel better because i’d be too close to death to feel like shit and they could enjoy all the benefits I feel like i’m abusing by wasting away on my computer typing into a void rather than actually working to resolve my own issues

because maybe this post will somehow help me resolve things by putting them all out for others to see. or so i can reference it later. idfk

Research into presenting and the final form

After looking at the types of cameras I will use and concluding that I want to use an instant camera I now have the trouble of looking for a way to present my work. This can be done in many forms from a book, to hanging work up to even the simple idea of sticking them onto a wall.

I’ve done some research into artists and ways of presenting and here are my results, I will be updating this section as I go along in the hopes to keep all my presenting ideas here.

  My first artist/ style of presenting I’m going to look at is the simple book, this is such a big topic as there are lots of different styles from neat and artist books to big, messy scrapbooks but I will look at a range of them

  James jay

James jay is a photographer who works mainly with zines when presenting, a zine is self-published bit of work and I think works very well for the idea of small polaroid pictures.

One such zine is called “love the world I see” this is a series of images from James who just goes around his community taking pictures and snapshots into middle American lives. While the content is nice its not what I’m looking at, the way the artist has presented the work with just the image, a title and then the camera he used. I think the simplicity of Is what draws me in. the way that its all about the image and not the design of the book or how much content is in there.

  While it’s a good way of presenting I don’t know if I will be able to copy such simplicity as I will have to add a small sentence or two for each small wonder, as I need to show the explanation of why it means a lot to me. This will add way more content into the book/zine and I think it would overload the viewer with how crammed it is within my book.

   Jeff Rothstein

Another book that follows this vein of simplicity is the book “todays special, New York city images 1969-2006” by Jeff Rothstein, this book is a documentation book based upon New York and its changing nature from the 70s to the late 2000s. the way it is presented is basically the same kind of style as the book before but this time the images are much bigger and have even less space for any writing or work. the main thing I like from this book is the range of images and how each image is presented slightly different. Some images might be done in a portrait mode and some could be done landscape.

 When put into the book there is a sense of speed, no thought given into the neatness or straight edges which is something I am into, I don’t want to be focused on how neat my images look in a book or how neat the page is I just want to show off my work and the meaning behind and move on.

Nigel Shafran

My last idea based around some of themes in the last book I looked at, being messy and not caring too much about the look of the book as its about the photograph, one artist called Nigel Shafran. This photographer doesn’t care too much about the look of the book, they keep it dirty, messy and used which is what I am like with my books and work so this really speaks to me.

This example here has part of an image cut out and stuck in different ways and on one side no picture apart from some words. This I think screams Owen when ways of presenting our involved. Just the effort gone into the work is probably a lot however its just so messy and simple that I want to do it, while I would need a bigger book so I could follow my ideas of adding a small description however the messy, simple and cut and stick effort its perfect.

Non book ideas

When I started this project, I wanted to do something more stylized and not in a book and my idea came from a game, “life is strange” in this game you play as a character with a polaroid camera and you can take pictures within the game. By the end of the main game you see all your photos hanging up from the ceiling and this sparked joy for me, and I think following this idea would be really cool, having all my images there and you have to walk though them would be super cool. As its like your walking though my day to day life and you can see what date and time I had my small wonder and on the back of the images there would be a short description so you don’t lose the meaning.

This however crashed and burned once I spoke to my tutor, we pointed the good things such as it’s a nice way to present, it can be semi-interactive (walking though the “cloud” of images) but then we discussed the bad parts.

Would there be enough small wonders, I had planned there would be about 50-60 small wonders hanging up which seems like a lot but as we discussed it isn’t many, the film is 8 by 5 cm which is tiny when compared to the room it would be hanging up in. not only this but it was pointed out that my work may get “lost” when surrounded by much bigger pieces and may lose its importance, and if there isn’t a clear understanding of the way you should walk within the cloud things will get messy.

These were all valid points which now I have seen I think I will need to work within a book or a different way.

  AFTER THE RESEARCH

 I have gone back and forth on many ideas when it comes to the presenting of my work, and now we have moved online I will have to work in the style I choose but figure out a way to present online.

after many tutorials I can say that I want to present my work in a form similar to Nigel Shafran but bigger, having a big sketch book that has enough space for my images but also my small description. More of an artist’s book mixed with a scrapbook is what I was going for, and this was fine. I got some coloured paper and scrap items and began sticking them in with my work creating pages and spreads like this.

 This however was not what I envisioned and by the end of the process I was unhappy with it, and when it came to the crit and me showing my work I grew unhappy so I decide to though it all up and change how I presented it within the book.

When it looking at styles I went back to Nigel Shafran who had a more collage way of doing things so I redid my book into a style more collage with some inspiration from David Carson, whom works with editing images with newspaper and I did a similar thing but instead worked with real paper and my images so it was all done handmade. This is the outcome.

 Overall im much happier with how this came out compared to before the crit and I think it works well with the busy news surrounding the small innocent wonder that is the main focal point of the work, rather than being overwhelmed by the news I myself take on the small wonder and focused on that. As that’s my identity.

 Something I need to add to presenting is how I have moved online, while a book on its own is okay it doesn’t work online, so I had to video myself turning the pages, leaving enough time on the page for it to be read. This on its own wasn’t enough so I recorded myself speaking and talking about each small wonder so rather than reading yourself the viewer can listen to me and look at the design and image on the page.

Those who plan to use SAI may encounter a problem when exporting their artwork into JPEG files. SAI may downsize your artwork’s dpi to below 300 dpi. So please remember to check the dpi of the final file you are planning to submit to us by opening it again on SAI and checking the dpi. You may do this by going to the menu, clicking on ‘canvas’, and selecting ‘change resolution’. The window that pops up will show you the dpi of your JPEG image. Accelerated Mobile Pages vs Facebook Instant Articles: Is Google winning the mobile war?

Articles published with Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) load four times faster than standard mobile pages with a 35% improvement in engagement time, according to new research from Chartbeat.

Facebook Instant Articles (FIA), a key competitor to Google’s AMP product, load faster than AMP. But publishers see three times as many AMP articles viewed per day than FIA articles.

This comes hot on the heels of a stream of encouraging news on AMP from the Google I/O keynotes, presented by VP product management Rahul Roy-Chowdhury and Malte Ubl, creator and tech lead of the AMP Project. These included:

There are now 2 billion AMP pages from over 900,000 domains, as of May 2017. A year ago there were 125 million AMP pages.

An average AMP page loads in less than a second and uses ten times less data than a normal mobile page.

AMP supporters and partners include Twitter, Tumblr, Qzone, Weibo, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Bing, Feedly, Nuzzle.

AliExpress reduced load times by 36% with AMP, helping to increase orders by 10.5% and conversion rates by 27%.

Meanwhile, in late May 2017, Facebook announced an extension to its Software Development Kit (SDK) so that articles produced for FIA will also be publishable as AMP articles, and soon also as Apple News. This is in response to publisher frustration at having to produce content in different formats for different platforms.

Facebook’s move could also be a reaction to a number of publishers reportedly dropping Facebook Instant Articles, and a recognition the FIA is losing ground to AMP.

A recap: What is AMP?

AMP is special type of slim-line mobile webpage, which is an open source project, led, or controlled (depending on your viewpoint), by Google. AMP web pages are faster because:

AMP is not part of the publisher’s main website (less baggage to download).

The content is static (less interactive baggage to stall download).

The articles are pre-cached on servers around the world, by Google or its AMP partners, so they are closer to the user (faster to download).

Any web page could be – and should be – speeded up in a similar way, by reducing page bloat, and using caching via a content delivery network. But the advantage of AMP is Google will only cache AMP pages and Google promotes AMP pages in mobile search above non-AMP pages.

As demonstrated by the following screenshots, of a Google search for “Trump” captured concurrently on a tablet and smartphone, using the tool mobilizer, AMP news stories dominate mobile search results for topical terms. Not just in the picture-led carousel of news, but throughout search results. AMP doesn’t feature at all in tablet results, which is baffling.

What the difference between AMP, Facebook Instant Articles, and Apple News articles?

Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News are news articles from third-party publishers that appear in the newsfeed on the Facebook app and within the Apple News app, respectively. They are tightly controlled by Facebook and Apple and only available to users of those apps. They are also not discoverable through web search or other third party sites or apps.

While these platforms present additional distribution channels for publishers, there is a double drawback to using them: the potential for losing out on direct traffic to their own sites and apps (where they potentially control all the ad revenue), and also the need to prepare articles in three additional formats.

The stats

Chartbeat’s research is particularly interesting as it provides an independent assessment of AMP and a comparison with FIA. There’s no inclusion of Apple News in the research, which is unfortunate as little is known about the platform except that it has 70 million users, according to Recode.

Chartbeat compared 360 sites that use both AMP and FIA, from its 50,000 media sites that use its analytics tools. So how did AMP stack up in the race against Facebook?

Speed and engagement

Let’s start with speed and engagement.

The research found the average mobile web article took 5.3 seconds to load, but AMP took 1.4 seconds. That’s not as quick as Google’s claim of under a second, but it is a four-fold improvement.

FIA loaded in a fraction of that time at 0.001 seconds, on most occasions too fast for Chartbeat to measure.

Comparing the read time of visitors coming from search, Chartbeat found readers engage with AMP articles for an average of 48 seconds v 36 seconds for normal mobile articles i.e. 35% longer.

There were no comparable engagement stats for FIA.

Considering AMP’s focus on speed, this comparison with FIA is embarrassing. However, Google is already working on speeding up AMP.

In his Google I/O keynote, Malte Ubl announced a plan to make AMP twice as fast to deliver “first contentful paint” – a technical term referring to the first ‘interesting bit’ of a webpage that the browser loads.

In practice, this will make it twice as quick to access the important part of a document, e.g. the text in an article, when clicked through from search.

Article volume

On a daily basis, publishers see three times as many AMP articles viewed as FIA articles, according to Chartbeat. The report authors concluded from these results that content has a longer lifespan on AMP, or receives traffic for more days from AMP, than from Facebook Instant Articles.

Article volume matters to publishers. Especially when they have to reproduce content for different platforms, as well as, and in competition with, their own sites and apps.

As noted above, Facebook has opened up its SDK so articles produced for FIA would also be AMP and Apple News ready.

Similarly, if AMP volume continues to plateau for these publishers as Chartbeat suggests it has since the beginning of the year, publishers could become restless.

AMP vs mobile web

The biggest competitor to AMP probably isn’t FIA or Apple News; it’s the plain old mobile web.

Chartbeat’s research shows that publishers that use AMP and FIA have seen them steadily make more of an impact on mobile traffic. But today AMP is 16% of all mobile traffic for AMP publishers, and FIA is 14.8% of all mobile traffic for FIA publishers. While this is still significant, the majority of mobile traffic is not made up of either.

Not everyone is happy with AMP

There has been a growing number of voices of dissent to AMP. A lot of this sentiment is summed up in this provocative Register article, calling on Google to “Kill AMP before it kills the web”.

It’s clear from the Google I/O keynote that AMP publishers have also raised issues. Elena Legeros highlighted and addressed four key challenges:

All AMP pages look the same. Response: Google is releasing more templates through AMP start.

It’s hard to measure/track visits to AMP pages. Response: Google Analytics is working with third party analytics companies to improve this.

Not everyone likes AMP URLs in Google Search. Response: Google recognizes that it is frustrating. Will work with partners to display the original article URL.

AMP pages do not monetize well through ads. Response: Google disagrees.
