I'm a little unhinged today so I had the genius idea of making mini books of some of the projects I would eventually like to publish online one day! I used MyFroggyStuff's faux pages book printables as a base. I only did four as a test run and they're so cute! They make me so happy and more motivationed to keep pushing. I did write up very brief synopsises and they're surprisingly legible irl

I mainly used art I already had (including ones from years ago as you can see lol) but even then, it fills me with insurmountable joy.

Fic Origin Story

What was your first fandom (reading and/or writing)? I’m not exactly sure how to classify my fandom experience. (Way back) in the beginning it was a very solo thing. Peeking through geocities and angelfire sites, reading bandfic (nsync) but that lacked the community feel of fandom. I definitely met people I still call friends to this day but say, when I started reading and writing Twilight fic, that felt more like fandom.

What was the first story you ever wrote (even if it was never posted) and what made you decide to write it? A ridiculous story about a Canadian singer-songwriter and a boyband member. LOL. I can’t even begin to describe it but to my 14 year-old self, I’m sure it was just a nice fantasy to escape into and a way to be creative. As silly as it probably was, I can remember how proud I was of the words on the page and that’s something.

What’s a piece of advice you would give to your younger fic-writing self? Don’t be so nervous to ask for help from your fellow writers. You all sort of feel the exact same way.

What’s an early fandom interaction that stuck with you (be it a nice comment, a friend you made, a fic that got a lot of feedback etc.)? An author I really liked and respected took the time to read my stuff and helped me along with my first ever publicly posted fic. That she took the time to read and be excited for my words went a long way to set me on the path I’m still on today. And I mean, the nice comments… if I could print them all and just keep them in a little book next to my heart I would.

Post a sentence or two from one of your older fics, and a sentence or two from a newer one (if you want). Oh dear… perhaps some Jasper x Edward fic circa 2011? And yes, first person and no, no need to link it for anyone. lol.

Rosalie snapped another picture and said, "There he is, wave." She pointed to the sidelines and my hand raised without my permission. I’d spotted Edward looking up at us with what looked like a wide grin from under his helmet. He raised his stick in salute and jogged back out onto the field.

"You can put your hand down now, Jasper," Rosalie whispered through a giggle and I wanted to die. I dropped my hand quickly and sat on it.

"You're such an asshole," I whispered through clenched teeth at Rosalie who was smiling and clicking away.

And from something much more recent There’s No Turning Back I love writing those almost-but-not-quite-there-yet moments. I think this is one of them.

When the song ends, Twyla passes on the guitar to Ted and they start on something new, quieter but David can’t focus on it. Not when all his focus is on the single finger drawing a line down his throat. He swallows and looks back up. Patrick is focused on the line he’s tracing. He does it two or three more times before his hand comes to a rest, cupping his neck. He catches David’s eyes.

“Now that I know you can sing, you need to actually participate next week,” Patrick says quietly, lost in their own bubble. David turns his head into Patrick's stomach and mumbles the words.

“Maybe you’ve finally convinced me.”

Your writing is top tier!! Cause I genuinely don’t know who to be mad at! My emotions are in turmoil. You’ve done amazing, you can see the Erik loves Yani deeply, that the thought of losing her makes him vomit and the power she has over him, but I’m proud of her, like Twyla, she has drawn her line with what’s she’s comfortable with and sticking to it. She’s wrong and a little selfish to want to take the kids but I understand! They’re hers, she raised them, no Erik, nothing - But that dinner scene, where the kids didn’t come to her, ouch! Big big big ouch!

I’m happy that Disa is being so mature about the situation, that she recognises that it’s mainly guilt behind his affection. I want her to find someone that will make her happy. Her and Yani need to talk! The real test will be when Disa meets someone new, how will Erik take it.

I thought Disa and Yani were friends? And how far away are we from the snap?

I have never wrote so much for any story before in my life! You are amazing!

Here's a little insight:

Originally, Disa was supposed to be his one and only. The Wet Sugar book was supposed to be a short interlude for Killmonger like "Say Less" was. The idea was he would have all these different women in his life (Stark's New Intern & Forty-Seven G too) that would open him up to getting away from revenge all the time. But Yani highjacked that "Wet Sugar" story and it became much longer than I intended it to be. By the time I finished it, I decided that they would have a child and have this big dramatic reunion.

However, I finished "Wet Sugar" before "BBBTF Vol 3", so people fell in love with Yani first before they even met Disa, who is the catalyst for getting him on point to becoming Killmoger in the first place. Fast forward 3 years later and I finally start the final BBBTF book (volume 4) and I make the wild decision to bring Disa into the mix with Yani. Personally, I felt like it would be boring to write the perfect ending for Yani and Killmonger. I still want to push him as a flawed character, but it also allows me to look at the complexity of three vivid personalities coming up against one another and how they will work this out. Also, I love Disa and Yani equally! People have their faves, but like me, Erik was always going to have trouble giving up one over the other. (If people remember, he had this problem before as a child and resolved it. So there's that...lol!)

The snap is not far away. I have to set up some things in Wakanda for Killmonger before the snap, so I would say Thanos is coming in six months time, so about five more chapters.

Rollin' With the Homies

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

it just happened! haha. i knew the movie had a first person narration and i expected to just do that for the very beginning and end, and then it felt weird to stop and suddenly switch to third... so i kept with it!

i also did some backwards math, assuming that alexis is 30 in 2018, and decided to set the fic in the 2000s instead of the 1990s, like the movie, because that's when the characters would've been this age.

2: What scene did you first put down?

i outlined and wrote everything in the order of the fic, so the beginning's the first!

3: What’s your favorite line of narration?

Between you and me, a lot of people like to treat me like I'm stupid. And I don't know why, since I'm perfectly smart! I just don't care to, like, worry about stuff that doesn't matter. But Twyla looks at me like the things I have to say actually are important, and that they aren't dumb. It just means a lot.

i thought a lot about how alexis would describe her relationship with twyla, since the fic was written in first person. i didn't want the narration to feel forced, like something she wouldn't say, and i also wanted it to ring true with the theme of 'being clueless' from the movie. i really like how this turned out.

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

"The truth is that I have been in love with you since that first weekend we spent together, when Mutt came into the picture but then you came home with me. I am so crazy about you, Twy, I swear I can't stop thinking about you. You make me feel like – like I'm not totally clueless, you know? Like I could be better. Like I could be the way you see me."

in the movie, cher doesn't really have a big romantic declaration to josh, but twyla's the tai character in this AU and part of alexis' journey in SC is how she learns to be brave with her emotions. so i always knew i wanted to write something like this. i like how it ties into the snippet from #3.

5: What part was hardest to write?

honestly, i wrote this fic super fast and it flowed really easily... it's probably the fastest i've ever written a fic. i think basing it off of a movie i knew really well and having a pretty detailed outline helped. i was writing 700+ words in 15 minute sprints 😅 that said, it was also exhausting to write so quickly, so i'd say deciding to take on a new fic and writing almost 10K in one week, while the fest was going on, was the hardest part.

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

the first person narration! i don't think i'm going to do it again, but i'm really happy with how it ended up.

7: Where did the title come from?

the classic brittany murphy scene from the movie, of course! given that twyla's tai, it was a no-brainer.

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?

i based a lot of miscellaneous details about this fic on being in high school during the early 2000s, just like alexis and the gang.

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

nope!

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

why not?! haha. @schittposting requested this au a long time ago and it always stuck in my mind. and i'm a sucker for a happily ever after with a/t, d/p, and s/r, so it had to happen.

11: What do you like best about this fic?

i think it's fun to read! i wanted to write something fluffy and light and hopefully this delivered on that.

12: What do you like least about this fic?

i wish it was shorter, because i was busting my butt to finish it, lol, but i'm glad it turned out the way it is. i also wish i had more alexis and david moments in it.

This is the author’s very first fic they’ve posted, and it’s just a delight — and the ending made me laugh out loud.

I love seeing her build friendships with members of the Rose family, and this fic shows a little friendship moment between Twyla and Patrick and it is so lovely! (with a little hint of Alexis/Twyla. It’s inspired by the fic Got You by colourcodedbinders

I would be complex, I would be cool by @yourbuttervoicedbeau, Alexis/Ruth, rating, 2220 words

Summary: Ruth doesn’t ask to stay the night, which is good; it saves Alexis from the awkwardness of coming up with an excuse for why she can’t. Ruth is gorgeous, and lovely, and fantastic in bed, but Alexis just isn’t looking for her next big love story right now. She’s not sure she’s over the last one.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I'm absolutely enchanted with this world and the thought of these two confident, radiant characters getting theirs and more – and the reason why things shift from casual to the potential for more is so hilarious, I literally LOL every time I think about it. This is inventive, fun, sexy, and an utter thrill to read.  

Learn To Live On Less by @chronologicalimplosion​, Alexis & David, Ted & David, Ted/Alexis, rated T, 4509 words

Summary: For the first month and a half, even with the lists and the challenging reality of tailgates and homemade cheese balls, it doesn't even occur to David that his health might be affected by the move. His small black medicine clutch, already pre-packed in case of an Alexis emergency, had been practically the only nonissue the day the feds stormed through the house racing to touch everything of value in the house before the Roses could sweep it into their own arms. The bag had been solidly in-hand right after he emptied his cabinet of hair products haphazardly into a duffel and right before he chewed a bloody hole in the side of his mouth from the stress of having to manhandle his precious wardrobe in the name of expediency.

And then he wakes up--at a respectable 10:32--to an email from his old pharmacy notifying him that his automatic prescription refill date is coming up.

OR

The one where David Rose is a trans man and it's a little complicated transferring your HRT prescription to another country when you've lost all your money and are living out of a motel.

Rec [written by yourbuttervoicedbeau]: This is such a wonderfully done layer over canon that just fits. Both the ‘real time’ and the flashbacks are visceral and wonderful. David and Ted’s interactions are so, so funny, and I can’t wait for more of this series.

Summary: David doesn’t know I’ve been writing you these letters though so this can be our little secret. One teensy little letter can’t hurt right?

Alexis and Ted exchange letters after he moves to the Galapagos.

Rec [written by yourbuttervoicedbeau]: Look my Ted/Alexis feelings are… too much for this forum, so let’s just say they’re a lot. Also if you’ve read… anything I’ve written you’ll know what a sucker I am for epistolary. Basically, even though this was a birthday gift for someone else entirely, it FEELS like it was made for me. There’s such a gamut of emotion in the letters that Ted and Alexis exchange, and you really feel what the characters are feeling. Also the choice for how to structure the two chapters (which I’m not going to spoil) is SO effective. And the ending! The ending. You’ll see.

Tell it to the Goats by @kindofspecificstore, Heather/Rachel, T, 23,318 words

Summary: Rachel loves chocolate cake, her houseplants, and Patrick Brewer. She's not a fan of her car breaking down on the drive out of Schitt's Creek. Thankfully Warner Farms comes to her rescue in more ways than one.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I don't know what to say about this fic other than: READ IT! It's captivating, enchanting, and delightful, packed with lots of enjoyable Rachel introspection and queer feelings. I love how fic gives us an opportunity to expand on characters we barely get to meet and give them new life, and this is no exception. It's tagged "the wlw Hallmark movie we all deserve," and it's absolutely true.

The Seasons of Our Life by @treepyful, Stevie/Twyla, rated G (MCD warning), 666 words

Summary: Stevie used to know nothing about plants. (Stevie thinks about the late love of her life as she picks flowers)

Rec [written by samwhambam]: Beware: there is a MCD warning on this fic, but that happens before the store begins. Grief is hard and never ending and this fic perfectly describes a moment of peace after a death, where you are able to think of their memory and remember them as they were and their impact on your life and just love them. It’s short, and beautifully written and perfect and I just want to give Stevie a hug. Highly recommend.

Wake Up, Sunshine by @fraudulentzodiac, Stevie/Ruth, rating, 407 words

Summary: Stevie wakes up to Ruth making breakfast.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: This is the perfect, bite-sized fic, full of fluffy, wonderful domesticity. Despite its short length, their personalities ring true in every word. This fic is like a warm hug, just like the cozy morning it depicts.

I decided to fill out that one Monster High doll collector questionnaire for funsies.

1) Introduce yourself and tell us how long you’ve been collecting Monster High dolls!

I’m Max (female), and I’ve been marginally interested in the MH line of dolls ever since they came out, but I’ve only been buying them for about 5 years now.

2) How many MH dolls do you have?

I own 23 dolls (if you count Sandy de Nile as a doll).

3) Is Monster High your favorite doll line? Why or why not?

To me, MH is on equal footing with Barbie. I like the MH characters, but I’m not a super big fan of their original fashions, and I’m just more pleased by Barbie’s clothes and hair styles. But, on that note, while Barbie is appealing and comfortable to me, I really appreciate how quirky and wacky the MH characters can look.

4) Who’s your favorite MH ghoul?

Frankie Stein, no doubt about it. I really like her visual aesthetics, and her face has always been super cute, and her color schemes go so well together, and agh, she’s so precious! Three of my dolls are Frankie and I love them.

5) Favorite Manster?

Definitely Jackson Jekyll. And I like him for a lot of the same reasons I like Frankie: colors, face, aesthetics, etc.

6) Do you own any dolls of your favorite ghoul and/or manster? How many?

Again, I own three Frankies, and I also own one Jackson. When I saw the Frankie/Jackson graveyard picnic 2-pack, I had to get it. I also have the ‘I <3 Fashion’ Frankie and the comic-themed reboot Frankie.

7) Do you own any playsets? If so which one(s)? If not, is there a reason?

No, I don’t. Playsets as a concept don’t really appeal to me these days.

8) Of the original main ghouls (including Ghoulia, Spectra and Abbey) which is your favorite? Got any dolls of them?

Ahem, Frankie. Aside from the obvious, I’m also a fan of Cleo, Draculaura, and Spectra. I have a Cleo doll (reboot family set) and I’m pretty happy with her.

9) Favorite character with only one doll release?

I wanna say Kjersti as my top fave (I’m a sucker for the little nordic gamer), but second tier would probably go to either Porter or Neighthan (I like their dolls, but not their characters).

10) Character with too many dolls (in your opinion?)

Depending on whether you see the baby siblings as actual dolls or not, I’m gonna have to say Sandy de Nile, who has had 2 releases, which was 1 too many in my opinion. It’s not like the two versions look drastically different or anything - only the torso got painted a little differently. That’s all. What’s the point?

I don’t know about the conventional dolls.

11) Any character you would’ve liked to see in a doll line that didn’t make it? (i.e. Lagoona in Sweet Screams or Draculaura in Power Ghouls, etc)

Lol, ‘Geek Shriek’ Holt would have absolutely killed me.

‘Dead Tired’ Howleen & Twyla 2-pack.

‘Sweet Screams’ Rochelle as macaroon and wafer cookies and hot cocoa.

12) Any ideas you would’ve liked to see in a doll line?

I would have rather they just expanded on some of the lines they started but only did like 3 dolls in.

But I would have liked to have seen a line that was just centered around gaming, where each character has a different game theme. Like, Cleo has a tabletop RPG theme, Ghoulia has competitive chess or something, and Jinafire or someone has a Candy Crush-like app game theme. I think that would have been a cool line.

13) Is there a “grail” MH doll for you? If so do you own it?

‘Little Dead Riding Wolf,’ and no, I do not currently own her. (I am such a sucker for Little Red Riding Hood, leave me alone.)

14) Thoughts on the cancelled Ever After High crossover?

I’m honestly glad they didn’t go through with it, because by the time they got around to seriously talking about it, I was so sure it was going to turn out really badly.

Besides, their choice of not doing it has given the fans the freedom to tell a crossover story in whatever way they choose.

15) Thoughts on the 2016 reboot faces?

I think they’re cute! I really like them! :-D

16) Thoughts on the 2016 “Monster Family” line?

It’s an adorable idea! And I’ve wanted other siblings for so many of the characters (especially the Wolfs and the de Niles) for such a long time now.

17) How bout the SDCC exclusives? What was your favorite? Do you own any?

I don’t own any. And honestly, I never paid that much attention to what doll was a San Diego exclusive and what wasn’t.

I think my favorites are super-fan Ghoulia, and the Whisp/Valentine 2-pack.

18) How about Amazon exclusives?

The special Skelita is very pretty. The family got her for my collector sister as a gift. She’s a very lovely figure.

19) Favorite Frankie Stein doll?

... I can’t choose. I love so many.

Of the three I own, I think the one from the graveyard picnic 2-pack is my favorite.

20) Favorite Draculaura doll?

I’m gonna have to say the ‘Dance the Fright Away’ reboot doll is my favorite Lala, with a close second of her ‘Classrooms’ doll. ‘Snow Bite’ and ‘Sweet 1600′ and ‘Sweet Screams’ are also really great.

21) Favorite Clawdeen Wolf doll?

‘Frights Camera Action’ Clawdeen.

22) Favorite Cleo de Nile doll?

The one from that 2-pack with Ghoulia that almost made it to Comic-Con but didn’t? Where Cleo is dressed in all her royal burial trappings? Love it.

23) Favorite Lagoona Blue doll?

‘Ghoul’s Night Out’ Lagoona.

24) Favorite Ghoulia Yelps doll?

Either the one from the ‘Mad Science’ 2-pack with Cleo, or the one from the ‘Scaris: city of frights’ line.

25) Favorite Spectra Vondergeist doll?

‘Picture Day’ Spectra, who’s both pretty and super spooky! A good combo!

I usually just arrange them on a shelf in my room. I’ve also enjoyed designing and sewing outfits for them in the past, but I haven’t done that in awhile.

36) Is Monster High the only doll line you collect? Why or why not?

I co-own a Barbie collection with my sister, but MH is the most recent collection I’ve bought for.

37) Do you still collect Monster High dolls? (i.e. scour the internet and/or secondhand stores?)

I mean, if I happen to see one I like that I can afford, I might get it. But it’s not something I tend to go out of my way to look for.

38) There’s a lot of new Monster doll/toy lines out now: thoughts if any?

... Are there a lot? I honestly don’t keep track of toy lines that closely these days.

39) And finally, what’s your favorite thing about Monster High? Can be past or present!

I came for the puns and I stayed for the quirky aesthetics and outlandish character designs. And I’m still having fun with those things, even if Mattel and most of the fandom have all moved on (as evidenced by my fanarts).

She refused to look at anything humans did as redeeming in any way, and even any good they did she labeled as a negative trait. First impression: i binged the whole series in a couple of weeks lol I don't really remember if I thought anything of her tbh?? I didn't ship her and Jim at first because it didn't sit right with me in the beginning when she was clearly ENGAGED to someone else. Obviously I thought she and Jim were really cute though and were meant to be together. She seemed nice though lol

Impression now: i was not a fan of where they took her character in the show tbh. I hate that her relationship with Jim became a source of conflict after they were married with kids. IT SUCKED. Their relationship was so pure in the beginning and i loved the pranks they'd play on Dwight. And I hate that she gave up art too.

Favorite moment: maybe it's more of a Dwight moment but I LOVE the Asian Jim prank XD I can't really think of anything else in particular because i only watched the show the one time. But maybe anytime she was actually friendly with Dwight and Michael.

Idea for a story: not a fandom i'm likely to write for

Impression now: LOVE HER SOOOOOO MUCH!! MY GIRL!! She has such a great heart and I LOVE her character development throughout the whole series. Always improving herself and becoming the selfless, powerful, and headstrong woman she is in the end!! Still crying about it okay. She's so good.

Favorite moment: ugh because I'm almost done with my latest rewatch of the series the moment between her and Twyla in s6 after Alexis gives Twyla all her old clothes, Alexis says "cute dress" and Twyla responds "Thanks. My friend gave it to me." UGH SOBBING ABOUT IT

Idea for a story: i don't write for that fandom but if i did it would be a TED AND ALEXIS REUNION OKAY BECAUSE THEY DESERVE A HAPPY ENDING.

fun fact, i wrote the entire almost-10K in under a week and i'm still slightly burnt out from it, but it was worth it 😅 i had finished all my tropefest things and was itching to write something else since i couldn't fathom not working on something for it. @schittposting had long ago prompted me to write a twylexis clueless AU, and she already had everyone casted in their 'parts'! i've been wanting to do a little california AU for a while, too, and then it seemed fun to set it in the 2000s instead of today, when the characters would've been in their teens. so something that i intended to be just a small little thing quickly took on a life of its own.

i completely did not intend to write in first person for the entire thing – i thought i'd just do it for a little intro. but then it just started happening, and it actually turned out to be faster and easier to crank out the whole thing if i did it in stream of consciousness, so i just went with it. i don't think i've ever written fic before in first person, and i'm really proud of how it turned out!

street lights, big dreams, all lookin' pretty (david/patrick, alexis/twyla, a whisper of stevie/ruth, T)

ahhh! this was my very first time writing david and i was an anxious mess throughout the whole thing. it took me three months to write 11.5K words, as opposed to clueless AU 🤭

i really loved the prompt with everyone taking bets on whether twyla and alexis were together, and i loved that it would be set in new york, where i lived for a few years. i love fics set there, both from the perspective of alexis making her way there, AUs set in new york, and fics exploring the effects of the city on both david and alexis. so i had to write it, even if i was terrified of writing a different POV.

i knew i wanted to treat it as just as much of a D/P fic as a twylexis fic (or even more so, since it's from david's perspective), and hopefully i achieved that. with that in mind, i really tried to focus on making the story just as much about david coming back 'home,' his thoughts on how he's changed and what he's gained since he left, and his feelings for and relationships with each of the characters involved in the story. at the time that i was writing it, i was also doing a full rewatch of the show, so i think that helped me try to give him more of a distinct voice and tap into his relationship with patrick. lastly, i really love how snarky and sarcastic david is, and how he uses it not just as a shield, but also to express himself to the people he cares about. so while i don't always try to write the narration with a ton of personality, i really tried to do that with this fic so it would ring through.

lastly, i would not have made it all the way to the finish line if it weren't for @landofsonlali @anniemurphys and @januarium, who all gave me lots of handholding and reassurances about my david POV. thank you again!

this fic 100% snuck up on me. @yourbuttervoicedbeau prompted me for 'snowed in,' without a specific pairing or detail, and i had no idea what i would write them – but then they wrote their first jake/rachel fic, and i fell in love.

i'm so honored to think that you thought i did well with rachel! she isn't a character i've really explored all that much – for a while, i didn't fully understand what drew fandom to the character, and i thought it was just the connection to patrick that attracted people. but then i started thinking about her circumstances, and how she's lived her life expecting it to turn out a certain way. that really resonated with my type a anxieties, plus some life upheavals i went through in my 20s when i thought i'd end up with someone completely different than i did 😆 so there i was, suddenly waking up and writing the entire fic in one morning, caught up in Feelings.

@yourbuttervoicedbeau had created an amazon workskin for AO3, and all of a sudden i had a vision of what this fic could be. i messaged them to see if they could make a yelp skin, and then i wrote this entire thing in one night while they were coding the skin, and then got up extra early the next morning to apply the code to my fic, calculate the yelp average (lol), and then post it to AO3!

i really wanted to convey a whole found family aspect to the entire town, so i knew i wanted to hear from everyone. i didn't intend to cover the entire canon of the show (and beyond), but then i discovered that i actually kinda... had a plot? as much as that fic has a plot, anyway. (i have a really bad, exhausting tendency to want to rewrite the entirety of canon via fic.) so i kept adding in reviews as little nods to the different episodes, to ground the reader, and then i started adding in reviews from people outside of the show, and then i started having feelings about how the food is supposedly not very good but you see everyone there all the time, and it can't just be because it's the only restaurant in town – it has to have some things that are good (i hope). so then i started having feelings about the café as a general institution, and it all just kept spiraling and spiraling. i'm so proud of how it turned out. it's actually my most kudosed/commented-on fic!
