Satoshi Mizukami Q&A, 3/3

Satoshi Mizukami recently took questions from the editor's desk, and publicly from write-ins, for an interview to celebrate the first volume of Solte going on sale (Jan 9th!). So I translated them all! It’s in three parts, so I’ll post them one by one.

Here is the third and final section, general questions of all kinds.

Q: I heard you were pretty impressed by Masakazu Ishiguro's Hero (note: Debut work in Gekkan Afternoon, 2000), and when you met him you said "You're my rival!" right to his face! Is there anyone that comes to mind you would still consider your professional rival today? A: Oof. I don't think I have that spirit in me any more. But, even while myself and so many of my friends are starting to slow down, when I see them putting out work, I do feel encouraged to stick it out.

Q: I've heard you started working to become a manga artist because you "wanted to live in a fantasy world" yourself. If you really could jump into a fictional world, what kind of work would it be? Who would you be in the story? The main character, or maybe the last boss? A: I want to live in a porno game. Somewhere with no danger or fighting.

Q: From any medium, can you think of one piece that you liked the most or inspired you? And can you explain why? A: There's probably too many to try and pick just one, but in terms of what really influenced me; For manga, late 90's Shonen Sunday and early 2000's Afternoon. Then, 90's new-wave light novels. For anime, Diebuster. In film, La Puta. A handful of Sega Saturn games. Some scifi stories on forums, and a bunch of other works on Shosetsu-ka ni Narou.

Q: What have you seen/read/played more recently that you liked the best? And can you tell us what you liked? A: Manga: Touge Oni. It was the first thing I read in a while that made me jealous. In books, The Three-Body Problem. I liked the second of the trilogy best, but they were just good page-turners. For anime, Karakuri Circus. The manga ended long enough ago that it felt like going in fresh again, so it hit just right. Really liked the OP too. Film: Interstellar. Tenet wasn't great, so I rewatched this again and still good. It's exactly the kind of movie I was wanting. Games: Ring Fit. I had the idea if I got a little bit in shape, I might get some motivation back. I feel like it might be working? Just the teensiest, slightest bit. Light novels: I Am the Only One Who Knows This World Is a Game. It's just the right amount of bonkers.

Q: If you had ultimate freedom to do any kind of manga you wanted, what would it be like? Would you want a long series, or something shorter? -Ruha A: I was going to say I haven’t exactly had any restrictions, but actually a few things did come up with Solte. But even still, I can fit in any ideas I really want to draw, so I think things are pretty good as they are.

Q: If you had to put yourself in a genre, what kind of manga artist do you think you are? Sci-fi? Or maybe romance? -Takeshi A: I'm a little surprised to see "romance", even as an example. If you ask me, you can categorize me however you want.

Q: Which character are you most attached to, out of all of your works? -Habu A: Anima from Biscuit Hammer.

Q: When you're designing your characters, how do you come up with a good balance when it comes to the composition and relationships in the cast? -Yoneko A: Oh, man. I just kinda... Feel it out.

Q: I've been a big fan of your work forever! I really like your drawing style. How do you make your art the way you do? -gum A: I dunno, that's just how it turns out when I draw. I've been telling myself "Wow, I need to work on my art" for 19 years, since the day I was first published.

Q: Has raising a child had any effect on your stories? -Tai A: It means I work less.

Q: I want to draw manga too, but I'm not very confident in my skills. Do you have any advice? -Tai Arima A: First, do you mean you're not satisfied yourself with the quality of your work, or you're just not confident enough to put it out there? Don't worry, this is always a fundamental issue for creators, things rarely come out just how you imagine them. It's like how you can only print out photos at a resolution as sharp as your camera can capture them. I recommend you start by just making something. Sit down, do it, and finish it, and you'll learn a lot from it. It'll be up to you whether you show that around, but when you start, I wouldn't necessarily make a big deal out of it, you can just work on it quietly without making a big announcement. That way, there's no pressure, and if it's not working out, you can still stop or take a break without feeling bad about it. You decide how to use your time the best.

Q: When I went to a promo event for Planet With at Loft, you and Rensuke Oshikiri (Hi Score Girl) both talked about how as you get older, you find it harder and harder to stay motivated. Have you found anything that helps you in that regard? -Tayu A: I listed to some cheerful music for a while last week and actually found it helped my mood a little.

Q: I love how expressive all of your characters are! Is there anything particular in your process for when you are working on faces and expressions? -Arbel A: I have to be careful I don't go overboard making the same expression I'm drawing.

Q: I write for a hobby, but I always have trouble planning out how the story comes together. Do you have any advice or a favorite method for composing a story? -Nigou A: I read and re-read what I've got, and anywhere I think it's getting dull, I change the scene or add some exciting development. Make the last thing you think would happen, happen. And don't worry about how to tidy everything up, that's a problem for tomorrow you. Today you just has to lay it out.

Q: Hello, Sensei. I've read all your works, and I'm a big fan, but what really impresses me is your dialog. I love how it always just flows off the page, it reads so naturally. So, my question is, when you are writing the dialog, do you just hear it unfold naturally in the character's voices, or do you write more deliberately like "oh, here they would probably say this?" That probably sounds weird to people who've never written manga, but I'd like to know about your process. P.S. Good luck with the Ring Fit grind. -Kiki A: First I decide how the dialog needs to play out in order to advance the story in the direction I want. Then, I just let the characters talk among themselves, and if it doesn't turn out right, I go back, shake things up, and try again. And sometimes I get good material, but it just needs to be trimmed or re-arranged just right.

Q: A lot of your stories have some sort of turning point where the back half really kicks it up a notch and things just keep getting more intense. Do you already have these developments planned when you start a manga? -TKO A: I usually have a few ideas but it's always pretty vague. I never know if I'm gonna wind up putting in or cutting certain scenes, so I don't worry about it too much.

Q: Do you have one favorite scene or a particular line from your own work? -yamatozo A: At the beginning of Spirit Circle volume 6, where the bad guy falls down the stairs and goes "I've made a lot of missteps".

Q: Do you have any idea of what genre you'd like to draw next? -Umehoshi A: I won't say no, but I don't want to give anything away (for my next work, or this one).

Q: If you weren't successful as a manga artist, where do you think you would be? -Ayuta A: Jail. But I'd be a model prisoner.

Q: How much longer do you think you'd like to continue as a manga artist? -Ayuta A: If I could pay the bills for the rest of my life with 24 pages a month, that's just what I'd do. At some point maybe I'll get to be unsatisfied with that and start to push myself to work more and more until I get sick of it, but no telling when that might come.

Q: How do you think of your character's names? -Takeshi A: They just come to me. I look at how I designed the characters and just imagine.

Q: I feel like some kind of forgiveness or absolution is something a lot of your characters go through. Does "forgiveness" have a special significance to you? -Bow-wow A: I'm not sure. Maybe it's me who is seeking forgiveness.

Q: Do you have a favorite phrase or motto? A: I like Shigeru Mizuki's (Gegege no Kitaro) 7 Rules of Being Happy. I don't really go around saying them or anything, but it's something I like to remind myself of, and helps me be mindful of other people. Also, I like "fortune favors the bold."

Q: You like frogs enough that you always draw yourself as one. What do you like about frogs? And do you have a favorite species? A: Frogs are cute. I like green tree frogs the best.

Q: You've drawn a lot of different youkai in Sengoku Youko, but out of all the youkai that most people know from stories, which is your favorite? Could it be the Chan Chu (chinese money toad), or possibly the oogama (monstrous giant toad)? A: My favorite youkai is Mizuki Shigeru.

Q: You've been doing Ring Fit, and eating oatmeal, are you doing anything else to help stay in shape? A: I put the Karakuri Circus season one and season two OP on a playlist and listen to it while I walk to work.

Q: If you were stranded all alone on a deserted island, what are the three things you would want to have with you? A: Really? Okay. I would bring two essential tools I can't find on an island, and a map.

Q: Do you have a favorite actor or celebrity? -Umehoshi A: Nope.

Q: What's the best kind of alcohol and snacks you've had? Where did you drink it? -Ikaninjin A: In the middle of a hellish summer and probably suffering from heatstroke at an amusement park with my kid, I had the best beer of my life in an air-conditioned food court. And the delicious spice to top it off was the bright sun knifing through the window that I just knew was tormenting everyone still outside.

Q: What do you want to be when you grow up? -Ayuta A: A youkai.

Q: What does your internal mindscape look like? -Rou A: An empty lot.

Q: Has anything happened recently that you're happy about? -Sanachan A: My son is starting to read and write.

Q: What kind of hotpot are you looking forward to this winter? -Tommy A: I'm not crazy about hotpot.

Q: I'd like to go to another event where we can toast again, would you consider it?

Q: How many times have you thought about quitting Ring Fit? -Honyarara A: 2 or 3 times. A week.

Q: I know you call it your "100-day Ring Fit Diary" on twitter, but since you've been taking breaks too, will you be going past 100? Will the illustrations be collected and published anywhere? -The Dieting Gentleman A: I'm going until I clear adventure mode, but it'll probably be finished by the time this article is up. I'll probably do some sets here and there. No plans for the illustrations.

Q: Do you have a favorite panel out of all your works? -Umehoshi A: You guys are really focused on my favorite everything. I have a lot of panels I like, not one in particular.

Q: Hi, I really enjoy all of your works, and there's one thing I think I notice (sorry if I'm wrong), and that's a love of glasses girls. Out of your manga so far, which is your favorite of all your glasses girls? Do you have a particular girl you've become a fan of recently? As for myself, I really like Yoru from Sanjin Sadou, so I'd love to see a story with her and her sister! -Bashi A: Glasses girls aren't particularly a thing for me.

Q: When you're doing authographs or sketches, does it bother you at all if people request characters from your past works? If I get a chance, I would probably ask for Hyou Shimaki from Biscuit Hammer, for instance. -Akasha A: If it's a promo event for a Mag Garden title, and you were to ask for a character from a Gahosha title, for instance, it might technically bump up against merchandising contracts, which makes it a little weird (I'm typically not allowed to to create any merchandise without going through the publisher), but my managing editors are usually cool enough about it. But if it's specifically a Sengoku Youko event, for instance, and I'm constantly getting asked for Biscuit Hammer drawings (let's say more than half), that would probably be an issue and they might make a rule against it for next time. Also, I tend to forget how the older characters actually looked. For personal reasons, I probably won't be doing any in-person events like this for a while, though. There's also the whole "current state of the world" thing, and my profitability and if bookstores actually want to do it, a lot of issues to solve.

Q: You usually draw Anima working out on Twitter, but did you have plans for any other characters to show up doing Ring Fit? (Like from Angel or Sanjin) -RYO A: I did, but forgot.

Q: Will you put together another oneshot collection, like Geko Geko? -Friday A: I don't know.

Q: Question! What is love? -Shirae A: To live is to love.

Q: How about this, do you have any questions you want to ask your readers? -Buriki A: Would you rather have: A. One series a month, from roughs to completion, all done by me B: Two series a month, with roughs by me and final touches by someone else

Hi. I wonder how was the first date, James and Edward (sorry for mistakes in text, I use the translation). P.S. This is the best and beautiful couple

Alright so I ended up writing way more than I initially meant to (I’m so sorry) so I’m putting it under a read more. Here’s Edward and James’ first date. Also wow, this ask was sent almost exactly 3 years ago. May 2, 2017. Yikes. but uh..hopefully this makes up for it?

James was eager to impress Edward and arranged their date to be at a rather fancy restaurant. On paper, everything should have gone perfectly. Fine dining and good company (James was on his best behavior, of course). Everything went as expected and they met at the restaurant. James, for once, had planned ahead and booked them a table! “Reservation for Álvarez,” he’d said, giving Edward a smug little side glance. For most people this wouldn’t be remarkable as it makes perfect sense to book a table in advance,  but for James it was a notable effort.

As I said, everything was going as perfectly as it could. Inside James was nervous as all hell but he was disguising it remarkably well. They ordered their food– James requesting no asparagus and Edward requesting no tartar sauce, Edward selected the wine, and they snacked on some authentic-looking breadsticks. The conversation never dwindled into an awkward silence and the their main course arrived in the middle of Edward recounting a particularly amusing incident with Henry from some years ago.

A few minutes after they’d begun eating, Edward appeared thoughtful. He excused himself to use the restroom, leaving James at the table. James had a moment of insecurity, but assured himself that, surely, Edward is far above ditching someone in the middle of a meal. Everything’s fine. Five minutes went by. Then it was ten. Then it was fifteen. At the thirty-minute mark, James, whose temper was rather short even without first-date anxiety wearing down the fuse, was caught perfectly in between fury and despair. Was Edward hoping James would give up and leave? Had he ran out while James wasn’t looking? The food was cold, the wine bottle was empty, and James’ patience had dried up completely. He stood up and went to see if Edward was even in the bathroom. He’d probably left, leaving James with a fat bill when he lived in a one-bedroom flat while Edward lived in a cushy three-bedroom house. Of all the inconsiderate-

And then he found him. Or at least, he saw his shoes. And his legs, in the pitiful position one takes when one is at the mercy of one’s very upset stomach. James knocked on the stall door, any anger replaced by mellow confusion and a bit of concern.

“…Edward?”

The ever-unpleasant sound of someone– Edward– retching into the toilet.

“You, uh… You alright?”

“No,” was the exasperated reply, punctuated with a groan, then a gag. There was a quiet click, and the stall door hung open slightly. James stepped forward and peeked in. There was Edward, indeed pitiful, clutching the toilet. He flushed and the ex-contents of his stomach vanished from sight.

“Jesus, Edward, what happened?”

Edward sighed wearily, not looking at James. “I, um... I’m lactose intolerant..........severely. Lactose intolerant.”

James thought for a moment, realizing that, wow, now it makes sense why Edward always very firmly denied having any ice cream on common room movie night. James quickly pushed the thought away, almost embarrassed at such a sidetracked observation.

“Why didn’t you say something?”

“I didn’t think...” Edward gagged. “It was relevant information. I asked for no t-“ he gagged again. “The...the fish sauce, but there must have been milk in the mash. And...” He sighs again, glancing back at James. “It’s something I’m a bit self conscious about. I’m not sure why.”

And there’s the first awkward silence of the evening.

After what feels like an eternity (it was only 10 seconds) James asks if there’s anything he can do. Edward replies weakly, “Just take me home.”

With those four words James felt his heart completely deflate, and he could almost swear he physically felt any chance he had with Edward go down the toilet.

“Call a taxi or something...”

James leaned against the stall wall and sighed, folding his arms. “I don’t have any cash.”

“Oh god-“ Edward retched again, though nothing came out. “Neither do I.”

James thought for a moment. He knew what he had to do but Edward wasn’t going to like it. “I’ll be right back.”

So James leaves, Edward locks the stall again, and slumps himself over the toilet. He was much too tired to care what trouble James might get himself into. Well, not so tired that he didn’t care, but he didn’t have the strength to physically do anything. So he just stayed there, willing his stomach to settle.

And then... he hears some shouting? Was there a fight? Perhaps some patron who’d had too much to drink. Edward closed his eyes. It wasn’t his problem.

Except it was.

Suddenly he realized it was James’ voice he heard, somewhere distant in the restaurant, though he couldn’t understand every word: “... everyone! I hope you’re listening! ... in the toilet puking his guts up right now! ... don’t look at me like that, he had what you’re having!”

Oh god, what is he doing? Edward thinks. He hears a loud crash, the sound of glass breaking, and someone else scream. Oh for god’s sake–

Edward forces himself up, praying to a god he wasn’t sure he believed in that he’d be done vomiting for the night, and stumbles out the door.

“See?? Look at the state he’s in!”

And the eyes of every patron in the restaurant were on Edward. He surveyed the room– as best he could anyway, he was still a little dizzy. James appeared to be in a fierce argument with someone Edward could only assume to be a manager of some sort. Next to him was an upturned table– it appeared to have been unoccupied at the time, thankfully. Edward mournfully connected the dots in his head.

James rushed to Edward’s side, adding a rather dramatic flair to his voice. Whether he also meant to sound a bit drunk is up for debate. “You see what your food has done to this poor pathetic soul?”

The manager was very red in the face at this point. “Look, if you want a refund-”

“KEEP YOUR DIRTY MONEY!” James shrieked.

The manager seethed. “I was going to say, you hadn’t payed for your dinner, yet. We can’t offer you a refund.”

James paused. Edward wished he was invisible. In fact, a small part of him wished that the god he wasn’t sure he believed in would bless him with a heart attack right there on the spot. The restaurant was utterly silent. Somewhere a baby cried.

James cleared his throat. “Are you going to call us a taxi or not?” He could see a vein bulging on the manager’s forehead.

“Anything as long as it’ll get you out.”

And so, the manager called a taxi and some nice strong men escorted them outside to wait. James’ plan had worked, even if he’d gone perhaps a little too far. Flipping a table was perhaps a tad bit unnecessary, but he didn’t really mean to. It was some of the anger and frustration he was feeling from the disastrous date he’d just been on. If it wasn’t his fault before, it certainly was now. Just like everything else that goes wrong in his life, right?

Thankfully, Edward didn’t vomit again for the rest of the night. He had terrible stomach cramps on the drive home, which James wished he could have helped, but couldn’t, so he was silent.

After a very pitiful drive home (the taxi driver could not take a hint and kept trying to make small talk with the men in the backseat, not seeming to notice that one of them was holding a hand to his mouth and burping every other minute), James walked Edward to his doorstep. He helped him inside, to his room, and into bed. Edward passed out moments after he hit the bed. James, who was feeling very awkward, having never been in Edward’s bedroom before and was now technically watching him sleep and oh my god that’s so creepy-

“James?”

James nearly shrieked again but managed to stifle it. Startled out of his little trance he swiftly departed the room and closed the door. Bill and Ben were in the hallway, having come downstairs for a late night snack, but now facing a near-stranger in their home.

“What the hell are you doing here?” “You were Edward’s date????” “What did you do to him???”

“I didn’t do anything!” James whispered harshly. “He didn’t tell me, or the waiter, that he’s lactose intolerant. If police come to the door asking about property damage just tell them it was his date and I’ll pay for it later.””

“Police??” “Property damage??”

But James had already left. Edward didn’t come into to work the next day, but James was secretly glad. He didn’t want to have to face him today. Or the next day. Or ever, preferably. In fact, maybe it’d be better if James just left the country. He doubted Edward would ever want to speak to him again.

But when Edward returned to work, he looked as neat and tidy as ever. James couldn’t get the image of him slumped over a toilet out of his mind, but he was starting to succeed in convincing himself he’d just imagined it. He’d imagined the whole date, in fact! It was just a bad dream. Nothing is real!

You would think such a date would make someone like Edward run a thousand miles in the opposite direction. James did, anyway. But actually, when Edward returned, he had something to say to James. While the table flip was, indeed, very unnecessary, he realized that he only did it because he was trying to get Edward a ride home. It was sweet. In a violent, somewhat drunk sort of way. What he meant was, it was clear that James cared.

“So I thought I’d offer dinner again. But at my house this time. I’ll cook, and I’ll make sure Bill and Ben stay out of sight.”

James felt like Satan himself had reached up, grabbed him, looked him over, tutted and gone, “hm, not yet,” and went to throw him back to Earth, but overshot and launched James into Heaven itself.

What I mean is that James felt blessed to get a second chance.

Edward tried to return to the restaurant the following week to pay for their dinner, but he was met with a polite, but very stern, notice that he was now banned from this restaurant chain until he paid for the damages caused by his boyfriend.

By reflex Edward started to correct the polite but very stern man, but stopped himself. Hm. James, my boyfriend, he thought to himself. Then he smiled. What a funny thought indeed.

He’d pay for the damages later.

1 - Were you glad to see the back of 2020? What were the best and worst parts of the year to you? >> I honestly did not care one way or the other. I understand why the ritualistic “good riddance to 2020″ thing works for people, it just doesn’t work for me. In my mind, it really doesn’t matter if it’s 2020 or 2021, just as long as it ain’t fuckin, say, 2009.

2 - If you’ve purchased something you love from a small business, are you likely to leave a review or anything afterwards? Why/why not? >> Yeah, like I just bought a bracelet from an Etsy seller and I left a happy review because I love the product. I never really thought about leaving reviews in the past, but it recently occurred to me that I should probably start doing it for independent sellers like that. This particular seller only had one or two other reviews aside from mine, so you know, it really makes a difference.

3 - When was the last time you received some good news? >> Well, seeing the pending stimulus deposit was good news. It is just enough to pay off the rest of what I owe on my computer, which means I do not have to worry about that anymore. I consider that a great relief, tbh; that $150/mo was no joke.

4 - Does wearing masks cause you to get acne or oily skin on your chin and around your nose? >> Nah. I’d probably have to wear them for much longer periods of time than I usually do for that to start happening.

5 - Do you prefer dogs or cats? Do you have a preferred breed as well? >> Dogs. Pitbulls are my fave breed.

6 - Do you have any plans for the next few days? Are these plans something you’re dreading or looking forward to? >> Mostly I just plan to enjoy having my normal routine back once Sparrow goes back to work (well, until Thursday, because now she’s going to be working from home every Thursday...).

7 - Leggings, jeans, jeggings or sweatpants? >> Sweatpants.

8 - How often do you meet new people? Is this something you’d like to change in any way? >> Not often at all, especially now. I don’t think it needs to be changed right now.

9 - What time did you wake up this morning? Would you rather have slept in longer? >> For the final time, around eight or so. I’m currently in a sleep deficit so I probably could have slept in longer, but I don’t like sleeping in. Maybe I’ll take a nap at some point, maybe not.

10 - What’s your favourite meal of the day? What’s your favourite thing to eat for that meal? >> I guess breakfast, since that’s my most stable and predictable meal most of the time. I almost always have a veggie burger and chips.

11 - When was the last time you visited a zoo or aquarium? What are your favourite animals to see there? >> I think the last time was Labor Day in 2019? The red pandas were pretty novel. I don’t think I have a favourite animal overall, though.

12 - Have you ever bought or sold anything via Facebook? >> No. This just reminded me to check on whether the Buy Nothing group in my city approved my membership, but apparently they did not, and that really confuses me, because... like, I live in the city. Why can’t I join the Buy Nothing group? This sort of thing is so distressing to me, I just... wanted to do a little community participation. :/ 

13 - When was the last time you had to cross a railway line? Was it an automated crossing or a manual one? >> I mean, we cross train tracks whenever we head downtown.

14 - What was the last thing you received as a gift? >> The gift from Sparrow’s parents that was late to arriving, which I got yesterday. It was a wine mulling kit.

15 - Are you a fan of cheese? What are your favourite types? >> I mean, I like cheese. I don’t know if I’d go so far to call myself a fan, though. I like pepper jack, brie, Kerrygold swiss, etc.

16 - What’s your “go-to” hairstyle when you’re feeling lazy or in a rush? >> ---

17 - How do you travel to work or school? Would you rather get there in a different way if you had the choice? >> ---

18 - What was the last activity you did that caused you to be out of breath? >> I don’t remember.

19 - When was the last time you changed your bedsheets? >> About a half hour ago, because they’d just been washed.

20 - What household chore do you hate the most? Are there any you actually enjoy or find satisfying in any way? >> Any “wet” chore -- so, most of the ones in the kitchen and all of the ones in the bathroom. I don’t mind vacuuming/sweeping, dusting, or laundry (I especially like the folding), and I love to tidy up and put things back where they belong.

21 - How much money did you spend the last time you went to the supermarket? >> I, personally, didn’t spend any, but the total grocery bill this weekend was about $170.

22 - How often do you buy fast food or takeaways? What’s your favourite place to get those foods from? >> Not often.

23 - Do you prefer white, brown or granary bread? What other types of bread do you like to eat? >> I’m not sure what granary bread is, but generally I’m not too precious about the type of bread. I’m far more precious about where the bread comes from (locally-made versus mass-produced).

24 - Are you in any kind of pain right now? What’s causing it? >> I wouldn’t say that. I mean, being tired and melancholy can be a bit painful at times, but... yeah.

25 - Can you hear anyone else in your house right now? What are they up to? >> Sparrow is having a shower. IDK what the cat is doing.

26 - Do you find farts funny or gross? >> Neither? They’re completely unremarkable to me, unless someone’s farting a tune or something, which I guess is novel enough.

“I’m sorry ma’am, the peppermint bark latte is a seasonal drink. We don’t serve it until December.”

“What? Are you kidding me?” The woman across the counter levelled an incredulous glare at Eddie, as if he had spit in her face instead of reporting something he thought to be very reasonable. “I drove all the way here and you don’t have it?”

“We don’t. It’s a holiday drink,” Eddie answered, clinging to the scripted explanations that usually worked on perfectly rational customers. Who the fuck wanted a hot mint chocolate coffee in the summer anyway?

This woman, however, was anything but rational. “Can’t you just grab some syrup from the back, or whatever the hell you use to make it? It’s not that hard to flavor a latte.”

“We don’t have what we use to flavor it, ma’am. Since it’s, y’know, June?”

“Don’t get fresh with me! I know what month it is!”

“Then you should know we don’t have any fuc-”

“Whoa there, amigo.” The edge in Eddie’s voice died off as his coworker sidled up next to him - as if there was any room in front of the POS for two. “That’s no way to talk to a customer as lovely as any other.” Smooth as you like, Richie took over, laying it on thick. “No worries, ma’am, we might not have peppermint bark, but I’ll tell you what we do have - mint, and mocha. I’ll whip you up a latte with both and you won’t even know the difference. We don’t have the peppermint flakes to sprinkle on top but I can do chocolate shavings. Whaddaya say?”

For a tense moment, they glared between the three of them, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly style. Eddie wasn’t sure where he and Richie fell but he was pretty damn certain this nuisance customer was decidedly the Ugly.

“I guess that’s fine,” she finally grumbled, leaving Eddie to wonder where that grudging acceptance had been when he was dishing out facts.

“Awesome! Eds here’ll ring you up for that. You want any whipped cream?”

“Just to melt into the latte? No thank you.”

The awful woman passed over a wad of bills and moved on to the pickup counter without even dropping her change in the tip jar. When no one came through the dinky door at the front of the shop, and no one to the register, Eddie took up the flimsy plastic sleeve of hot cups Richie had been using to stock up, before he swooped in to save the day.

“I could have handled that,” he mumbled next to Richie as he shoved cups into the rack, unable to use his normal volume with the Peppermint Bark Bitch within earshot.

“You could have,” Richie exclaimed, nodding enthusiastically, squirting equal parts mocha and mint into the steaming cup in his hand. “You would have cursed her out and it would have been glorious. I might weep hot tears of joy just thinking about it. But also, like, you probably would have gotten fired, which isn’t so glorious, ya know? ‘Specially since I’d be so lost without you.”

Richie winked, and topped the dumb latte off with a sprinkle of the aforementioned chocolate shavings, before passing it down to the pickup counter. Eddie stood there, hands planted on his hips, frowning - doing a very good impression of someone who didn’t get flustered at the mercy of one stupid wink.

With that awful woman on her merry stupid way, the rest of the shop appeared exceedingly empty. Four o’clock on a weekday in the summer wasn’t the most prolific hour for a small town coffee shop, with lunchtime passed and the morning rush long over - which meant all they could really do before their shift was over, was clean and restock until someone else came in.

When it came to maintenance, Eddie always worked faster than Richie, wiping down the machines and filling the cups and lids like a champ - while the dumb brunet spent ten minutes at a time with a rag in the pastry case. Depending on how long they had been there, he may or may not start whining too. Whatever the reason for Richie’s shitty cleaning ethic, though, he made up for it in spades with his customer service. How he got through the full five or six hours without throwing a piping hot cup of coffee in some asshole’s face, Eddie would never know.

“This is boring,” Richie huffed, already whining as he crossed his arms leaning over the counter, where the orange afternoon sun set all the muted browns in the wood and his hair and apron to sepia. “I dunno why mid shift has to do this. Night shift does a whole fucking sweep of the place and God knows only the truckers and drunks are gonna be in here then.”

“Maybe food service isn’t for you,” Eddie mentioned, just barely managing to keep the smile from curling in the corner of his mouth.

“You’re right.” The four-eyed brunet sighed as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders (he didn’t), spinning to perch the other way, with his elbows balanced on the counter. His voice took on a soulful southern twang. “Mama always told me to get outta this one horse town. That I was born for the stage. That we’re all born superstars. She’d roll my hair, and put my lipstick on, in the glass of her boud-”

He got a face full of coffee-soaked rag, courtesy of Eddie. “Those are the lyrics to Born This Way!”

He didn’t realize he was staring until Richie transitioned entirely, hauling himself up to stand straight, for once.

“You don’t belong here either,” he mentioned, pointing a finger toward Eddie’s chest. “I’d peg you for a lawyer, but I’m not sure that mouth of yours would fly with the judge.”

“You’re one to talk,” Eddie retorted. Truthfully, he didn’t know what he wanted, or where he wanted to be. Just that this job payed a little better than minimum wage, included tips, and would hopefully get him somewhere better, someday.

He could think of one thing he might want though, glancing sidelong at Richie, aimlessly tidying the display next to the counter. And he didn’t even have to pay for it at all.

“I can’t really think of anything else to straighten up,” Eddie admitted eventually, rubbing his teeth over his bottom lip as his gaze trailed around the service area.

“You know what that means. Break time!” Spinning on the heels of his worn-out Chuck Taylors, Richie yanked a plastic cup from the stand - indication enough that he was going for his usual frozen favorite. “I’m making myself a drink.”

Suddenly, spurred by his presumption, an absurd idea came over Eddie. Without really thinking, he came forward and snatched the cup out of Richie’s hand, with all the gusto of someone following through with a concise course of action. This, however, was anything but.

“I know how you take yours,” he finally said, his mouth working at the same speed as his brain. “Bet I can make it perfectly.”

Richie blinked for a way too long second, long enough that Eddie’s blood started rushing with the weight of how stupid he was being. But finally, the idiot’s face took on a look of mock judgement, and he crossed his arms with put-upon petulance.

“Alright, Edspresso, do your worst.”

Calm again, and set to task, Eddie set the cup down on the prep counter and got to work. “A large caramel mocha frappe, no espresso,” he explained, narrating his actions with a dramatic roll of his eyes as he shovelled ice, milk and syrup into the blender. For a few seconds the tiny coffee shop filled with the buzz of the spinning blades, and Eddie remained silent until the noise settled, along with the thick concoction.

“Caramel drizzle around the cup,” he continued, demonstrating just so (with expert drizzling skill, if he did say so himself). He poured the frappe mixture into the cup, and darted away to grab the whipped cream can out of the ice bin. “Extra extra extra whipped cream, and to top it all off, caramel and chocolate drizzle.”

When all was said and done, with the dome lid capped over a mountain of whipped cream shooting out the hole in the middle, Eddie presented drink and straw to Richie, smiling rather smugly.

“In short, a diabetic coma waiting to happen.”

That familiar, toothy grin split onto Richie’s face, and he slow clapped for Eddie (a ridiculous gesture that definitely didn’t have him several sorts of secretly flattered).

“Well how ‘bout that.” The frappe passed from Eddie’s hands into Richie’s and he took a sip off the straw, indulging a few lip-smacks, wafting the cup under his nose as if it were wine. “Not bad, Eds, not bad. Your top drizzle is a little sloppy but I know the nozzle on the chocolate is fucked. Solid nine and a half.”

“Oh buzz off, Richie.” Eddie made to jab the idiot in the ribs but Richie was too fast, side-stepping with all the grace of a gangly newborn horse. The idiot then set his frozen confection on the counter, and plucked out another plastic cup.

“Now for you.” Winking again, Richie bopped the cup against Eddie’s nose, but was gone before the shorter brunet could protest - and the potential of Richie knowing how he took his coffee was just too great to resist, and so he clammed up.

“Medium iced hazelnut,” Richie began easily, with the tone and air of a proper English butler whilst shovelling ice and squirting flavoring. “Little less ice. Two sugars, two skim, two shots of espresso - which is probably why you’re so wound up all the time, but that’s none of my business.”

A sprinkle of sugar here and a spot of milk there and he filled the rest of the cup with coffee, gave it a good mix, and snapped a lid on before finally offering the drink to Eddie. “Short and sweet, just like you.”

“Wow, thanks,” Eddie mentioned, almost tightly as he took the coffee out of Richie’s hands, lips twitching as he fought yet another smile. Judging by Richie, who couldn’t resist a smile, he probably thought he had done a fantastic job. And to some extent, he had.

“But this is my morning order,” Eddie declared, closing his lips over the straw for a sip anyway.

Richie’s face fell. “What?!”

“Two espresso shots in the afternoon? Are you fucking nuts? My heart’ll give out.” Eddie rolled his eyes and scoffed. “If I get iced coffee later in the day I ditch the espresso and go one skim. I might even get a small too.”

“Well that’s not my fault! Sorry I don’t know the inner workings of your complicated coffee regimen!”

“Shut up, you dumbass,” Eddie griped. Before his lips could stretch too much, he took another sip, effectively quelling any inclination to smile. No way he was going to let himself finish the entire caffeine-pumped drink, though. “Besides, you were technically right anyways.”

Richie seemed satisfied with that at least, taking a moment to lick off the whipped cream puffing out over his cup. Eddie watched him for a moment, out of the corner of his eye. Even if his coffee hadn’t been completely right, there was something sort of delightful, knowing Richie had noticed enough to get his usual order down like that. All those mornings on the way to class, when Richie was scheduled and Eddie wasn’t. Busy with the regulars, and still managing to remember all those details.

Eddie could only wonder if Richie remembered them for all the same reasons.

“Hey, can I try?” Richie asked all of a sudden. “I’ve never had hazelnut before.”

“I thought you didn’t like espres-” Without warning, Richie’s head loomed down and close, and just when Eddie thought he might steal a sip from the straw, he shifted forward instead, slotting their lips together.

Richie’s mouth was cold from his frappe, and his breath tasted like mocha more than it tasted like caramel. Eddie blinked for a few endless seconds, heat creeping up into his ears and cheeks, until his friend and coworker finally slipped away - still bent at eye-level.

“Well hey,” Richie murmured, voice low as his dark eyes glinted behind his thick glasses. “Hazelnut tastes pretty good.”

Eddie shoved his hand up into Richie’s face, heart pounding as the idiot yelped and stumbled back. They calmed down just in time for the bell to tinkle over the door, and work and routine resumed in the little coffee shop once again.

Whiskey Business 

It was Tuesday when Niall texted me.

Not the group chat.

Me.

I had been tidying my desk, about to leave work to get lunch when my phone beeped. I ignored it as I pulled on my jacket.

I grabbed my wallet and phone off the desk, stuffing them into my pockets, and called over to Louis that I was going to grab us lunch.

“Where from?” he asked, his head whipping around to peak an eyebrow at me as he cracked eggs into a massive mixing bowl.

“Velvet Taco,” I smirked when his whole face lit up.

“Oh my god, I’ve been so good about not going there recently and I’m craving it so badly. You’re my hero,” he gushed while wiping his hands on a towel draped over his shoulder. He looked content with flour on his apron and his hair pushed back off his face a bit.

I smiled at him and shrugged. “I’m a woman of the people, for the people, Louis. I aim to please.”

“You succeed,” he told me. “I’ll text you my order?”

I nodded and zipped up my windbreaker, “Sounds good.” I turned and just before I’d walked out the door to the front of the shop to leave, I turned back around for a moment.

I had wanted to just watch him for a moment. I like watching him in his element. I liked watching all of my friends in their element. I had been to school functions and witnessed Ana, Harry, Liam, and Cleo in action. I’d even seen Cleo teach a few times when we were in college and she was an aide. I liked when they were completely happy and I knew, watching them, that they had chosen their perfect careers.

It was a rarity, I knew, to be so young and so happy with our places in the world, well-established places. Harry had a little less job security as a music teacher, but as of right now they were all secure.

Louis was another story though. Louis working was almost like watching someone have an out-of-body experience. I did worry about him not sleeping enough and overworking himself, but I likened watching Louis bake to watching a composer creating a movie score: it seems all haphazard and stressful until you see the finished project and put everything together and voila! The finished product would end up making sense of the mess that came before it.

“What?” he looked up at me eventually.

“Nothing,” I shook my head at him. “Just… don’t forget to text me.”

Louis nodded and went back to work.

It was much warmer and sunnier this week than last week, but the wind off the Lake was brutal--hence the windbreaker I donned--and thankfully, supposed to die down tomorrow. I was hoping to get out this weekend, the weather looked perfect to do so, too. If I could get myself out to the beach early I could spend the whole day just relaxing, not worrying about cleaning or meal prepping or whatever else.

The city was bustling around me. It was just as loud and crowded as usual and I was thoroughly unsurprised by the line at Velvet Taco. I’d be here for a minute. I pulled out my phone to start stalking my sister on social media and remembered that I’d ignored two messages. Opening the app I saw that one was Louis telling me his order and that the other was Niall.

I sent Louis a thumbs up and then opened the message from Niall, a brand new thread with only the one message to it.

Niall: Hi

I found myself smiling down at my phone as I shuffled forward in line a bit and started typing out my response.

Ruby: Hi

Niall responded almost immediately, which made me think that he was also on his lunch break. Or he was waiting for me to text him back. Probably both.

Niall: would you want to get a drink with me on thursday?

I felt my heart stop and then restart. I was absolutely floored and without thinking I felt my fingers type out my response.

It was like everything in me was still moving, but I was trapped in molasses. I couldn't seem to think, even my thoughts were trapped. I could feel the prickle of excitement shoot down my spine, but I couldn't process is. I could feel my fingers typing a response, but my brain didn't know what they were typing. It couldn't keep up.

A lot of things flooded my mind quite quickly. It was like when you see an overflowing mailbox, and that mailbox was my brain. All the letters had arrived and were ready to be read, but I was so overwhelmed by the amount that I couldn't actually sort through them and find one to open first. So instead I just ignored them a little longer.

I shuffled forward in line again as my fingers kept going on their own accord, not bothering to confront me.

Ruby: Would Friday be okay? I’ve got something on Thursday.

Niall: friday works great

Ruby: Name the time and place and I’ll be there.

Niall: the irish oak up in wrigley. 8pm?

I laughed to myself, probably looking a little wacky to the other customers around me in the restaurant, but the fact that he’d chosen an Irish pub only a few blocks from me--one that I’d been to plenty of times--was funny to me. I wonder if he’d been there or if he’s just chosen it for it’s name and location. I actually really liked the pub. Either way, it seemed an apt place to get a drink with an Irishman.

Ruby: See you then, Niall.

Niall: brilliant

I clicked out of the message app and then pulled up my sister’s social account again and scrolled through her posts and photos. She apparently had successfully snuck out with her friends the other night and now that she was back at school there were even more posts. I had to admire how bold Maher was to sneak out of our parent’s house. She had guts, for sure.

She had done it before when she was in high school, but our parents had since rearranged our rooms. Maher was moved into my room and her room became an office. My temporary living space at home for when I did go home to visit was a futon in the new office.

All of this meant that Maher’s new room was right next to our parent’s room, instead of across the house. It did have access to the massive tree in our backyard she used as a climbing vessel to get in and out, but she had to have known that any small sound would have woken up my father and foiled her plans.

I liked a few of her posts and then clicked back to Louis’ message thread where he’d send his order to me. I ordered our food and then moved off to the side to wait.

It was while I was waiting that something in my mind clicked and the letters in my mailbox brain were beginning to open, presenting themselves. And all of these thoughts and questions began bouncing around in my mind actively.

The first thought to reach me coherently was that I'd gone out for drinks with Liam, Louis, and Harry one-on-one before. Going out for a drink with my male friends was not all that uncommon. It wasn't something that even really phased me because I was so used to it by now.

Going out for drinks with my guy friends was like the physical contact issue I'd had when I'd first became friends with the lot of them. It seemed weird at first, against my normal, and then it became second nature. When I looked back I was able to realize it was only weird at first because I made it weird in my head.

Niall and I were friends. And he and I seemed to get on really well. He also seemed to get on really well with everyone else. He laughed freely with Cleo, gossiped with Ana, talked music with Harry--and me--, talked business with Liam--he thought the real estate license was so cool--, and he and Louis had the easiest friendship I'd ever seen.

Niall and Louis were a lot like me and Cleo. Because we’d lived together we knew each other intimately in ways that our other friends didn't know us. Sure, we'd tell them all everything just the same, but when you're working to pay the bills with someone, arguing against parking tickets for someone, and sharing a sleeve of Oreos with someone as you bask in the warm glow of a room full of candles, you really progress a friendship to some other, almost ethereal level.

Watching Niall and Louis the few times I'd seen them together, I could sense their deep level of connection. They could read each other's faces and knew when to makes a sarcastic comment and when to bite one back. I could see Louis smiling proudly, and selfishly that Niall had assimilated into the group and I could see that Niall noticed Louis’ shift in mood when it happened so seamlessly. They knew each other well and communicated without words.

I could see Niall and I becoming close, a lot like me and Louis. He was easygoing, fun to talk to, and he shared similar interests. I could be friends with Niall. I could platonically get drinks with Niall.

So why did I get a thrill when he asked me to drinks that I'd never gotten for any of my other male friends?

That question brought me to the second biggest thought on my mind, the more worrying thought.

Well, that second thought was also a question.

What if this wasn't platonic? What if Niall had intended his invitation to mean something more than platonic?

Did I want that?

What if I did and he didn't? Or he did and I find out I don't?

What if we try something and it blows up? What then? Who gets the friend group? Would we have to split them? I get Cleo and Liam and one of the Styles pair while he gets Louis and the other of the pair.

I work with Louis. Louis is my best friend. I can't lose him. But Niall would definitely get him in a split. He had first dibs. He knew Louis in college, lived with him for four years. I was close with Cleo because we’d lived together and gotten to know each other on a deep level, but Louis… Louis was someone I didn't think I could live without.

He was someone I'd gotten so used to seeing on a daily basis, someone I worried about when I saw the circles under his eyes growing darker, and someone I shared everything with. Louis was the person I laughed with, cried with… I had Cleo, yes, but Louis had worked his way into my heart as well. One didn't lessen the other.

But what if Niall and I do end up going together and do end up working out? Then all will be well. Would that risk be worth it? What if it was? What if it wasn't but we tried and failed and everything fell apart anyway?

I just didn't know. I could feel myself getting lost in the bombardment of thoughts that were flooding into my brain like a dam had broken. It was suffocating.

Until my name was called and my lunch order was placed on the counter for me to grab.

Taking the food, I walked out the door desperately hoping I could make it through lunch without Louis reading me like a book and that I could make it through Friday just having drinks, platonically, with a friend.

I was losing it.

I wasn't sure what ‘it’ was, but I was definitely becoming devoid of it. I could feel it leaving me at a remarkably swift rate.

I walked in looking for his hair.

The pub was already busy. It was a warm Friday evening in a nice area of the city, of course the pub was already busy.

I didn’t see him in the front near the open window, and the further I pushed into the building I was starting to think maybe I’d gotten here first. My nerves were starting to prickle at the back of my neck with that thought.

I didn’t do well with getting places first. Would I have to wait to order? Would I ever be able to find us places to sit? What if I chose the wrong place? Was there even such a thing as a wrong place? I mean, there wasn’t much to choose from, anyway. I was starting to spiral with these thoughts, all in the span of a second, but the thoughts didn’t have long to settle, because someone called my name over the din of the crowd.

“Ruby, hi!” His smile was wide and his eyes crinkled at the corner, but they were shaded under a baseball cap. I never would have found him with that on. I had been trying to find his floofy hair.

I internally gulped--picture an old animation movie style gulp--at the sight of the baseball cap. I was a sucker for a guy wearing one. Niall looked good, too. In blue jeans and a creamy long sleeve shirt, he looked both dressed appropriately and comfortably. We almost matched, too. I was wearing a cream coloured tee, but my jeans were black.

He was sitting, leaning sideways against the bar, the only empty seat around happened to be the one beside him.

I leaned in and gave him a one-armed hug. His smell, that clean laundry and cologne mix, was intoxicating, but I pulled back and sat down next to him.

“Hey,” I smiled back at him.

“What’ll you have?” Before Niall got a chance to say anything one of the bartenders came up to me.

“Whiskey neat.”

“Start a tab?”

I nodded and pulled my card out of my back pocket. “Sure,” I handed it over.

The bartender walked away and Niall looked at me over his Guinness that he was sipping.

“I was gonna pay for you,” he said with a bit of a pout. The hat was making it hard to see his eyes clearly. I could see his facial expressions, but his eyes themselves were a blind spot. It was unnerving.

I had decided, over the past three days, that this outing was just one friend spending time with another friend. I’d convinced myself of this fact.

When I’d changed after work to come out tonight, I’d consciously chosen casual clothing. I’d been very careful with my makeup to make it look good, but not like I was trying too hard. My hair was just down normally, not curled or straightened or anything. I hadn’t told anyone else about the two of us going out for drinks, but I was convincing myself it wasn’t because of their incessant teasing and insistence that Niall and I liked each other and that it was actually because it was no big deal.

Because it wasn’t. It didn’t matter that he looked great and was wearing a baseball cap and that he smelled wonderful and had asked me alone out to drinks tonight. It wasn’t a big deal. There was nothing to read into.

“It’s okay,” I told Niall. “I don’t mind.”

I watched as his lips puckered for a moment, but he nodded and let it drop.

“How’d you know about this place?” I asked him.

The bartender dropped my drink on the counter and quickly I took a sip, the feeling of the alcohol slipping past my lips always the same. The warmth of the whiskey, the smooth texture as it travelled down into my belly, even the bitter taste were all welcome as I closed my eyes and breathed deeply for a second before turning back to Niall.

“This is where I used to bartend,” he said.

“Wait, really?” I asked. I was doing math in my head. I’d been here just over three years. He’s been gone for somewhere between three and four.

“When did you leave?” I asked, genuinely curious as to how much we’d missed each other the first time around.

“I left in four years ago next March,” he said.

“I’ve been here four years next July,” I said. “We only missed each other by a few months.”

“I think it’s probably for the better that we missed each other back then,” he said, taking a sip of his beer.

I crinkled my nose and tilted my head at him in confusion. I lifted my whiskey glass and swirled the liquid in it around and around while I waited for him to answer.

He swallowed his sip and said, “I was kind of an eejit when I was younger. Going home really helped mature me.”

“I'm sure you weren't that bad.”

“Oh, I was pretty bad,” he laughed.

That laugh of his. It made something like excitement flash down my spine. I tried to ignore whatever it was by taking another sip of my drink.

“What makes you say that?”

“I had just graduated uni, was living with Louis, and was a bartender by night,” he gave me a look. “If that doesn't tell you enough, then I'll add in that I had bleached hair and wore a series of leather bracelets on my wrists.”

I was so unprepared for that last fact, not expecting it as the others had all been things I’d already known, that I actually snorted when he said it, and I had to quickly bring my hand up to cover my mouth and hide my smirk.

He nudged me with his knee, just like he’d done a week ago on the train, but he was smirking. Until I started laughing, and then he joined in. My head fell forward, my hair falling around my face as my laughter burst out. I knew without looking that Niall’s head had fallen backward and that his laughter was escaping out into the room around us. It got lost in the sounds of the crowd, but I heard it. I felt it.

Finally, I calmed myself down enough to bring my head up and push my hair back from my face. Niall’s cheeks were flushed pink but he was calmed down as well, and looking at me with something I couldn’t place in his eyes. I ran a hand through my already messed up hair and shook my head at him.

“You were doing pretty well up until the bracelets,” I tried so hard to keep my face neutral when I said that.

“That’s where you draw the line?” he asked. “Not the hair or the fact that I willingly lived with Louis Tomlinson?”

I laughed and shook my head.

“I liked the hair.”

“You liked the hair?”

“I mean, I really like it now, but I don’t think the blonde looked bad. Is this your natural colour or did you dye it close to get the blonde out?”

“This is natural,” he told me before he lifted the hat, ran a hand through his hair, and then placed the hat back down. “I just let it grow out eventually. It looked like I had frosted tips for a minute there,” his cheeks turned pink again.

“Justin Timberlake flashbacks?”

“Hey, that was a good look for both of us,” he nudged my leg again with his.

“I don't care how much of a fan you were, the noodle hair was not a good look for him,” I took a sip, the glass quickly emptying as my body grew warmer from the alcohol.

Niall laughed. “No, it really wasn't. I definitely worked it better than he did.”

“I can believe that.”

Niall blushed again under his cap, but it was starting to bug me that I couldn't see his eyes clearly. I could see them watching me, but I couldn't read them, see the emotions in them. He looked quite good though while he was wearing it, so I couldn't complain that much.

I realized then that my thoughts were entering dangerous territory. Friends could admit other friends were attractive. Objectively I thought that all of my guy friends were beautiful, even if it made me want to throw up in my mouth a bit. Me thinking that Niall was attractive and not wanting to throw up at the thought was dangerous.

Looking at him though, I couldn't deny it, or how comfortable I felt around him while thinking it. I felt my whole body gravitating toward him, and without my consent, my body started leaning toward him. I couldn't move back without him noticing either, so I stayed where I was, which was close to him.

“What's the with the hat, by the way?” I asked now, trying to distract myself.

The bartender took notice of the fact that both of our drinks had gotten low and when he came up to us we both agreed to a second round.

“My hair again,” he shrugged. “I just started on a new project at work and when it was handed to me I sort of realized that this is my first real job and this is my first project. I was raking me hands through my hair all day with stress… I figured it best to cover it up.”

“I told you last time you wore a hat that I liked the floofy hair,” I took notice of the fact that both of our drinks had been refilled and placed in front of us and picked mine up.

I watched as Niall picked up his own drink, looking at me with a small smirk on his face. I thought again about how unfortunate it was that I couldn't see his eyes, try and figure out what he was thinking. I hadn't realized in the little time we had spent together how much I liked his eyes.

I mean, I knew I liked the colour of them, that was one of my first thoughts about him, but I hadn't realized just how dependent I was upon reading him through his eyes.

“Does it bother you?” He asked, gesturing toward the hat, the offending object, on his head.

I shrugged. “It looks good,” I told him truthfully. “I miss your eyes, but the hat looks good on you.”

I don't think he'd been expecting me to say that, because his cheeks flushed pink again--I enjoyed that colour--and he looked away quickly and grabbed his beer and took a large drink.

“Tell me about your work project,” I said now, genuinely curious and excited for him.

It was when he insisted on walking me home that I decided I was a little tipsy. I'd only had three drinks and as it was nearing midnight, they had been spread out over quite a few hours, but that was more than I usually allowed myself to drink and my body was feeling it.

I think acknowledging that fact was also acknowledging that I was getting older. Three drinks in college was nothing. Three drinks at twenty-seven was another story.

During the walk home, Niall's hand kept brushing into mine.

It had been like that the whole evening as we had talked. He'd bump his arm against mine or his knee against mine, and I was starting to think that he meant to.

At first, while still in the pub, I had put it off as his being European. We’d already talked about how my culture and his were more open to touch and contact, but this had felt like something else. I ignored my own thoughts. I didn't allow myself to think about it.

Instead, I focused wholly on the conversation at hand with him. We talked about music again, went through each decade and ended with current music. We’d talked about work. Niall had asked me how I'd gotten into accounting and I was curious as to his backstory with how he had gotten into writing and copy editing.

It turned out that as a young boy in Ireland he'd not had much, living in a small home with his brother and dad and not much else to claim as theirs. What he did have though, was books. He didn't much pay attention to anything in school except for English lessons.

He'd sneak whatever book he was reading at the time into his lap during history and math--he calls it maths--lessons and get reprimanded for reading when he was supposed to be learning his times tables and about the different effects of Catholicism as it pertained to his country's history.

So he read, and he read. He was inspired by the words of his countrymen, like Joyce and Yeats and Wilde, and he knew he wanted to at least attempt to create something like they created. I thought it was a romantic idea in terms of passion and being a dreamer.

We talked about our siblings. I told him all about Maher and her adventures. He laughed when I told him about how she ducked out of the house and how at college she'd always send me a message in the morning to let me know she'd successfully made it home.

He told me about his older brother Greg, only a year older but already married with a kid back home in Ireland. About how Greg was a goody-two-shoes, but only just. He managed to win over all his teachers and did everything right. He’d gone to university--college--and found a girl and had a kid and had a sensible job close to home.

Niall was the black sheep, as it were. He'd left home and didn't have a solid job for many years after graduation, didn't have his life all figured out. Often Niall would find himself feeling inadequate about it, given that he'd looked up to his brother his whole life.

He'd have to remind himself that he was happy--that he had moved to a city he loved, found people he was happy to spend time with, and finally had a job he was excited for. It had taken longer than he'd expected or hoped and hadn't been as straightforward as he'd initially thought it would be, but he was here and it had all worked out.

We'd also had lighter conversations, as well. We talked about our roommates in college and some of the craziest things we’d ever done.

Niall’s was that when he was sixteen he’d saved up and flown to England to see a football--soccer--match without telling anyone. He had told his dad he was going to a friend’s for the night, so his dad was none the wiser. His brother though had found the plane ticket in Niall's backpack when he was looking for a notepad a week or so later. Greg never told on him, but he did force Niall to do his chores for as long as he could.

My story was about the time I'd driven with Cleo from Ann Arbour to Columbus in the middle of a massive snowstorm to see a concert. And then I drove us back. What would normally have been a three-hour trip was a five-hour trip. We spent eleven and a half hours in the car that day total. But we also saw a farewell tour of a beloved band.

Each of our stories was filled with laughter and an unbelievable risk that neither of us had cared about at the time. The amount of audacity we’d had when we were younger was something else.

Niall pointed out that even though I wasn't like Maher, I was, in my own way, just as bold and brave as she was. I was unafraid to move away from home and try new things and choose the career I wanted. I was kind of a risk taker in college--going to concerts and going hiking alone on top of when I chopped my hair sophomore year--something I thought my mom was going to murder me for. It grew back eventually though.

I guess I was a little more like my sister than I'd thought, in the best possible ways. I'd never thought about it like that, but we both had gusto. Just showed it in our own way.

It was Niall’s turn.

“Pasta. Favourite frozen yoghurt flavour?”

“Cookies n’ cream. Favourite sport to play?”

“Football. Favourite book?”

“Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Same question,”

“A collection of short stories by Hemingway.”

“Hemingway?” I asked before he could ask me a question back.

“Is that your question?” His head tilted my way.

“Is that yours?” I asked back. He laughed, and of course I joined in because his laugh is contagious and I couldn’t help it.

“I like Hemingway,” he shrugged and bumped into me. “What's your book about?”

“It's a nonfiction book about life in a Mumbai Undercity,” I said. “I've been to India a few times to visit, but reading the book... it took something I'd only seen from the outside and really put it into perspective for me.”

“I'll have to read it sometime,” he said.

“I'll let you borrow my copy whenever you feel like it,” I told him. He gave me a small smile, a show of his appreciation, as we turned onto my street.

“Thanks.”

“This is me,” I pointed toward my house as we got closer to the gate.

Niall, ever the gentleman, opened the gate for me and followed me up the stairs, making sure I got in okay.

I never had dark flashbacks while standing on my front step, never felt like someone was over my shoulder. It was odd. It was when I was inside about to fall asleep that I could never settle, felt unsafe. I couldn’t seem to willingly allow myself to be vulnerable, to be asleep when someone could easily get in when I was unprepared.

Standing on my front porch with Niall, I felt more than just safe from danger, I felt comfort and I felt at ease in my bones I'd not felt before, not even before my incident.

“You didn't have to walk me home,” I said now. “But I really appreciate it.”

“Of course I did,” Niall’s voice was soft. “I am a gentleman.”

I smiled and nodded. “So it would seem.”

“I really liked spending time with you tonight, Ruby,” he said now. “You've probably worked out that I’ve been quite lonely since I went back to Ireland. Coming back here to Louis and your friends, to you… it's all been something I appreciate so much. Your company has been so wonderful.”

“You do fit in well with us,” I acknowledged.

“You're all so incredible,” he nodded. “I seem to really connect with you, too. And I don't want to do anything stupid and mess that up, but I think I like you more than the others.”

His cap was casting shadows across his face so that I couldn't see clearly, and to make it even worse he dropped his head down for a moment.

I was oddly calm. That easiness, that calm feeling Niall’s presence brought me was not absent even at this moment when I could sense that he was a little tense. I knew what he was saying, and I knew I should feel nervous and anxious.

I knew what he was trying to say, but his presence made me so calm that I couldn't even find it inside myself to get worked up and overthink it.

Sure, as soon as I was inside and alone I would be consumed by my thoughts, slipping into the well and drowning in them, but at the moment, I was at ease.

When Niall finally did look back up, even with his hat I could see his cheeks were flushed in the glow from the streetlight just down the road. I thought it was beautiful, the colour in his cheeks. Even in the low light, I thought it was perfect.

“God, am I making a mess of this? I'm making a mess of this,” he started. “I'm sorry. I haven't done this in… I'll just… I'm sorry.” He started to turn away.

“Niall,” I reached out a hand and placed it on his arm. He was warm. My hand felt like it was radiating his warmth and it spread to my entire body. “It's okay.”

He gave me a small smile, he looked shy. I dropped my hand.

“Thanks. I know I'm mucking it up, but you're being very nice about it.”

I just smiled.

“How about: we should do this again sometime soon? Is that better?”

I laughed, but it wasn’t at him. It was just the situation.

“I’d like that,” I ended up saying.

“Yeah?” It almost sounded like he was surprised.

“Yeah.”

“That’s brilliant!” He was beaming.

I bit my lip at that look. I'd never seen him smile so wide before, and it was then that I noticed he had a single dimple. In a moment I had my hand up, ghosting over his face, my fingers splayed across his cheek just barely, as my thumb poked the dimple.

Niall gave me a look and then leaned in.

That overthinking? It was back! Oh my god. What was happening? This would completely ruin the friend group if it went south. What was I thinking? How could I have let it get this far? What an idiot I was. This was going to be bad. Louis would hate both of us. He would be miserable if something bad happened. We’re utter idiots for having gone out.

I was so delusional telling myself it was platonic. I knew myself better than that! I knew I was feeling more than friendship and instead of being smart about it, instead of keeping my distance, I went out with him. I got close.

I like him.

Niall, always full of surprises, kissed me on my cheek, my hand on his cheek the whole time.

At that moment I decided to hell with it all. I wanted to see where this went. I knew the consequences, I’m sure Niall did as well. I knew what the worst was that could happen, and yet here I was.

His lips on my cheek stopped the world. That ease that Niall brought to me was emanating from every bit of his body and with the two of us connected I didn’t just feel it in my bones that I was safe but I felt it wrap around me as well, like a warm, soft blanket that could fight off the dark of the world.

I knew what could go wrong, and yet here I was.

I felt breathless when he pulled back, my hand dropping back down to my side limply. I’m sure I was flushed, and I’m sure it was noticeable, even against my skin and in the limited light. I couldn’t keep up with my thoughts.

“Have a good night, Ruby,” he smiled.

“You too, Niall.”

He stepped off the porch but waited until I was safely inside before he turned and left.

What a 23 page report tells us about Urban Meyer and sports in general

First and foremost, I'd absolutely recommend that anybody who has an opinion on the investigation without reading the investigation findings which can be found HERE (http://a.espncdn.com/pdf/2018/0823/ohiostatepdf.pdf) read it. Read it once, get any sort of emotional issues out of the way and then read it twice with a clearer head. Stuff like this, serious issues about morality and sports trying to co-mingle, often needs multiple lookovers. This one is a neat and tidy 20-some odd pages so it's not like it'll take too much time out of your day and by report standards, it's written clear enough that anybody can parse through it and get it. Also in the following bit, domestic violence is going to come up and while I'm not much for trigger warnings, I do think a fair and honest "HEADS UP!" is necessary for a subject such as this.

The outrage has simmered down. By normal read and react (or just react) standards, the Urban Meyer situation has basically come and gone. His three game suspension  is known, we raged about it and people moved on as they often do. It's hard to stay mad at something for too long when social media is basically a treadmill of rage; by the time you get mad at one thing, something else is already coming up so you're never allowed to fully decompress. You can't "get it out of your system" so to speak. I feel like on issues like this when we're discussing potential/alleged violence against a spouse, it matters to read through the reports and try to find the best image possible. Reading through the report I have zero doubt that Zach Smith is an abuser in some form or fashion. If not physically then emotionally since chances are a guy with a severe drinking problem who seems to also have a severe anger issue and poor impulse control probably has no issue yelling or menacing somebody. The report wasn't about Zach Smith's indiscretions (not entirely at least) and was instead about Urban Meyer. It's what I have to assume (because otherwise why read it) a good faith assessment and report on the findings of what Urban Meyer knew, what he alleged to know and what we ALL now know about the Zach Smith situation and how Urban Meyer and Ohio State handled it. For those who wish to care, here are my own personal thoughts based just upon the findings:

1) For SOME reason, Urban Meyer's loyalty to Zach Smith is cast iron which makes zero sense

The 2009 arrest for a domestic incident is discussed and covered pretty clearly early on. Zach Smith brings home a drunk co-worker to sleep on his couch (because why else do you bring a female co-worker to your home to sleep on your couch after a party?) and his wife is upset. It's alleged that Zach Smith throws her against a wall, an allegation that ultimately leads to an arrest but not a charge from Courtney Smith. From there though and spanning two different universities, it sure seems like there's nothing but bad behavior from Zach Smith. From trips to strip clubs (which aren't illicit except for when you're doing it on the company dime/company time) to truancy in paying back bills to the school to other red flags amid the school. The biggie though is the 2015 investigation into more domestic violence allegations from Courtney Smith. At that point, Urben Meyer is faced with a difficult choice on a one v one issue. Zach Smith has to this point exhibited plenty of fireable behavior and now he's under investigation for domestic violence. For some reason Urban Meyer puts up with it, offering yet another warning. At this point Zach Smith continues to act like a problem (it's not illegal to sleep with a co-worker or to take dick pics but it's probably unbecoming for a dude in the middle of a domestic violence investigation to do it and to do it WHILE at work) until the restraining order is brought down in 2018. THEN and only then does Urban Meyer make the move to fire Zach Smith and the move is made, according to the information presented, because Urban was jumped on the news by the media.

For some reasons by which I simply can't comprehend, Urban Meyer's rope of trust for Zach Smith wasn't just long enough to hang himself but to hang Urban Meyer, Ohio State's Athletic Director Gene Smith, the Ohio State University and practically all of Ohio at once. For reasons I can't figure out, Urban Meyer decided that he would stake his perfectly crafted reputation as the guy who viewed this as more than football and who preached family and values and so on so so forth on a guy who ultimately would betray that trust time and time again is just unfathomable. Remember Urban Meyer had Aaron Hernandez on his football team at Florida and he somehow survived the eventual fallout of that with his reputation intact! He rode Tim Tebow and the Tebow-isms of Florida while having guys like Chris Rainey on his team. He left Florida citing health and family, took a year off for a major media gig and then bailed and went to Ohio State for the largest contract in history at that time. This was the world's most bulletproof built reputation and he somehow found a way to ding it over an assistant. Even the report seems baffled, speculating that it may due to Zach Smith being the grandson of a mentor of Urban Mayer's. Even THAT seems like a stretch and IF that's the reason then Urban Meyer got this point politically by accident because no smart man would be that loyal that far down the chain of command. Zach Smith wasn't his defensive coordinator or a close aide, he wasn't a guy in a high spot on the totem pole. He was the wide receivers coach for the love of God. He wasn't there for 15 years having a long track record of proven results. In fact even in 2015 and 2016, Urban Meyer was concerned about Zach Smith showing up late to work (!) and having a generally poor level of performance!

It's stated that Urban Meyer had never fired a coach before and that may have played into it. I don't know the veracity of that claim but if so I guess it makes a little bit of sense as to the apprehension. Still Urban Meyer has truly nobody to blame but himself for all of this because it's not like Zach Smith's character was sterling and beyond question. Anybody who knows me knows I'm a guy who values second/third/fifth/twelfth chances in life. You've probably seen me argue for dudes like Greg Hardy and company, acknowledging the right to be mad at those people for fucking up while also acknowledging the human right to be able to atone for errors and also the right to make a living (as other sports people have argued, what IS a guy accused of a crime supposed to do for the rest of his life? What is acceptable for him? Can he run a store? Can he cook your food? Clean your subways?). Zach Smith just keep making errors and Urban Meyer continued to put him on his coaching staff and the report offers no real solid reason for any of that.

2) "So I’m To Believe...”

My Con Law professor used to start a sentence with "So I'm to believe" whenever he was hinting that somebody was losing their end of a classroom debate. It's stated a few times in the report that Urban and Shelley Meyer had discussions about Zach and Courtney Smith. It was at least known to the couple that those two had problems, so much so in fact that when the 2009 incident between the Smiths occurred, the Meyers suggested a counselor to the duo.  As such, I'm to believe is that Urban Meyer and Shelley Meyer had consistent dialogue about everything except for when Shelley was presented with texts of abuse and photos from Courtney Smith? And I'm to believe that Shlley Meyer contacted police about a domestic violence investigation but didn't tell her husband she was doing that? That at no point during this period of time Shelley and Urban NEVER talked about allegations of domestic violence in 2015? Even if Shelley Meyer thought that Courtney Smith was being less than honest about the Zach Smith situation, I'm to believe she NEVER mentioned that to Urban Meyer? It's a lot to believe, ain't it? Shelley Meyer is deemed as "supportive" of Courtney Smith but not supportive enough to say "Listen there's some shit going on, what are you going to do about it?" to Urban Meyer?

3)  A three game suspension is worse than no suspension

Honestly there's no "Better than nothing!" here. There are three options here; 1) no suspension, 2) a lengthy suspension or 3) dismissal as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. To offer up a three game suspension is a slap in the face of the concept of good faith. If he violated enough ethics to be suspended, it should be a much lengthier punishment than three games. A three game suspension is like saying "We don't necessarily think he did anything wrong but we hope you feel better about it!" He won't miss Penn State, he won't miss Michigan State, he won't miss Michigan hell he misses ONE Big 10 game and it's Rutgers! No disrespect to the fine Rutgers football squad but I think Ohio State should be able to manage without Urban Meyer. Again if you feel like he violated something in your code of conduct, suspend him for more than just a quickie three game set. Six games and you'd have plenty of people believing in you. Fire him if you're TRULY convinced he did something wrong. Three games just feels hollow and vacant, like an attempt to make this go away with a terrible placating tool.

4) It's only a problem when a) someone gets hurt by it or b) someone finds out about it

The response of Urban Meyer at the Big-10 press conference is covered but what truly matters are the responses of the people involved. Gene Smith advises Urban Meyer to be as scant with details as possible, Once the shit hits the fan about a potential media snowstorm on Zach Smith, Urban Meyer instructs his coaches to keep the focus on the team and the players. On one hand, sounds like a coach aiming to keep everybody in line and out of the way of what's to come but Urban himself seems to have no idea how to handle the situation either. In fact, he asks people in the organization for details on 2015 which suggests he actually may not have known about it. Now granted that in and of itself is compounded by Meyer's text from before August 2017 of last year disappearing entirely for whatever reason. Strange as that may be. Shelley Meyer expresses concern for the safety of some people (Zach himself? Her family? Courtney?) when she discusses and I quote here on page 12, Section A; "“I am worried about Zach’s response. He drinks a lot and I am just not sure how stable he will be. Afraid he will do something dangerous. It’s obvious he has anger/rage issues already.”" Everything after the fact paints a bad light on what feels like a cover up, even if the information presented seems to suggest something far less nefarious. It has that “It’s only a problem if” vibe to it.

5) Urban Meyer's memory loss is troubling

Urban Meyer is 54 years old and expected to the head coach at a major college university. At numerous times during the investigation, it's mentioned that Meyer either can't recall exact details or just flat out can't remember things. If we believe his texts, Urban Meyer genuinely had no recollection of the 2015 investigation. He did know about it but couldn't remember it per the investigation. In the same investigation, Urban Meyer claims to suffer from memory loss as well. If this is coincidence or an act, he's the most committed actor in history. If it's real? I think we need to ask if a coach who can't remember poignant events in time relating to his coaching staff is truly the best candidate to coach a football team going forward regardless of the ethical concerns.

At the end of all of this, there's some serious ethical issues we need to try and learn from here.

I hope this won’t be the case but I believe we’re all one day going to be in Urban Meyer's shoes. I can't speak for what Courtney Smith has gone through. It's an avenue of life I haven't had to walk and hopefully will never have to walk. Hopefully my sister will never have to walk it either and hopefully no sibling nor mother of anybody who reads this will ever have to walk it. I can only speak for myself when I say that I've known victims of domestic violence and I've known those accused of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a visceral and emotional act; it invokes emotion from those who deal with it and those presented with it. Urban Meyer may truly be a man who values women and abhors those who put their hands on a spouse, namely women who are more often than not the victims. What Urban Meyer may not have been prepared for is the likelihood that somebody close to him would be the accused. It's a lot easier to hate domestic violence until you know the guy who is accused and until you hear them plead with you that they'd never do that. It's harder for you to accept it because YOU want to believe it. Look at your average social media kerfuffle when somebody is accused of something heinous; the majority of the people lambasting them probably turn hat quickly when it's somebody they like accused. We all hate domestic violence until it looks us in the face with somebody we care about. We’ve all probably heard a joke about domestic violence and let it slide unitl it stops being funny when it’s someone you kno wwith bruises. When it's you/us/we, it''s never as black and white, no matter how much it is to everybody else. Even to the very end after firing him, Urban Meyer was telling his staff that Zach Smith needed their help moving forward (on page 11). Urban Meyer was presented on two different occasions with the belief that somebody close to him who he admired was in fault of violating a code of ethics he subscribed (or alleges) to have subscribed to. In those instances, he trusted a man who ultimately in the end betrayed him. Why? I guess it doesn't matter now but it definitely is something to consider. If anything, I suppose Urban Meyer's situation will force us all when/if that time comes to truly question what it is we believe about people and whether or not "*So and so* would NEVER do *such and such*" is really the best way to show faith in a situation as nuanced, painful and complicated as this.

This ethical conundrum of trust and who we trust is magnified with celebrities and athletes and people we THINK we know. Ohio State fans have poured out in support of Urban Meyer with the belief that he didn't know or did the right thing or whatever the case. Our society (and I imagine societies before this) believe we know the people we see on TVs, football fields, basketball courts or on our youtube channels. The star worship is strong and it's getting stronger in part due to the goal of making the world as connected on an individual basis as possible. Nobody wants to believe that somebody could make an error that grave because we "know" them. We "know" them because we see them on TV four months out of the year, follow their tweets and instagrams and believe in something they do to a borderline unhealthy level. We idol worship and just hope like hell we've picked the right idol to bandwagon on. For Ohio State fans, they "know" Urban Meyer's code of ethics because he tells us them and then wins football games. If Urban Meyer did the former and not the latter, would this whole incident just be a convenient excuse for some people to want him gone? We "knew" Bill Cosby because he was funny, right? We don't really know anybody outside of the persona they want us to believe in---and sometimes we all need to remember that before we grab pitchforks or take stances. At the end of the day, I hope this incident convinces people to either wait for a reason to believe one way or another and not allow blind faith and the belief we "know" people to convince ourselves to pick a side long before we need to take one.  It's okay to let the facts play out; so long as you're consistent in who you're choosing to let the facts play out on.

And lastly, the biggest problem is one that I think we can all see happening on a day to day basis. That is "When is it okay to talk about somebody's alleged transgressions?" For Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Athletic Department, so much rested on whether or not Zach Smith was charged with a crime. On multiple instances, they admit that a large portion of their reaction was due to Zach Smith not being charged with a crime (that they knew of at least).  Even in the end of the report, they state that Ohio State leaving it in the hands of the law was not the best idea in absence of an internal investigation. Ohio State was waiting for the police or a judge to give them some sort of clearance and they waited too long because these things aren't rapid action. They were putting their hands in the legal process to solve their issue for them which is a problem in 2018. It's a smart strategy, I suppose, in that they are the people best equipped to handle that. At the same time, you run the risk of putting somebody else in charge of a problem. "So and so has never been charged of a crime!" doesn't neglect the investigation or the arrest. It's a fine line to walk; being fair to due process while acknowledging an issue at hand. Ohio State relied on the legal system to solve their problems which in turn is the challenge for pro sports today. 84 days

12 weeks until March 2021.

Twelve weeks doesn’t sound like much.

But I don’t have much to do in my days so the time goes by sort of slowly but at a decent pace. I don’t have any habitual places to go or things to do.

Sometimes I play guitar and ukulele, I sing every now and then each day, I listen to music, I browse the internet...

Sometimes I go for walks but not much in winter time like now. I meditate and burn plan material, sometimes smudging sometimes smoking. I watch movies sometimes.

I lay in my bed basically all day long. Some days I will exercise for around an hour. But most of the time I feel like laying down. I do my laundry and dishes. I keep my place tidy as I can with all these random things.

I won’t be having any visitors anytime soon. My best friend stayed for over a week and left yesterday evening. I’m gonna be alone for a few weeks until Christmas dinners start happening. I’ll get money for Christmas from my dad and I’m not gonna get much from anyone but I don’t mind. It’ll be a chill Xmas this year.

It’s the 7th Monday and on Wednesday I get the dreaded injection again. Oh well. I had a bad dream about having to take another med and it was really stupid, it’s like a hospital and my elementary school and people are bothering me about my health. But there was a sexy lady turning me on so that felt good. She was a redhead and really beautiful.

I’m gonna try to spend lots of money on my MasterCard this month and next month. My friend gave me money for staying here so that covers my Mc payment. I spend $70 extra dollars this month so far though and I usually don’t do that. Oh well.

I just paid 120 on my mc and I have $394 for 20 more days this month. I’ll have free food a few times for early Xmas dinner and on Xmas dinner and I’ll stay at my moms and get fed on Boxing Day too. And my dad will give me money so I’ll have $19 a day for food and any money my dad gives me I will save for my MasterCard.

I’m at $1006 and now $886 but there is about $11 in interest each month so $897 I’ll be at. Hopefully I can spend another hundred on it later this month or next month. I’ll save it for January. And in January I get gst cheque of $160 so I’ll save that for February.

Feb and March will be low fund months cuz I only get $484 a month for all my bills and food and I have to put $120 on my Mc each month at least. So that’s $364 for food in feb and March. Hopefully my dad will get my groceries again for those months.

And then in April I will get $160 gst again which will help and I’ll put it all on my Mc.

I will be paid off by July next year by paying my most reasonable amount and not overdoing it. I should be saving my money to put every little extra bit on my mc but if I just have until summer to have to keep paying I think that will be okay.

I won’t have much extra spending money for the whole summer but I guess I will have to manage. Hopefully my dad buys me groceries and that lasts me all month long so I can buy little extra things here and there. I like spending my money on cool things and treating myself.

I’m glad I’ll be debt free next year. I spent $105 while Joel stayed with me. I bought cds and a sweater and random snacks here and there. At least it was only a hundred but that’s still a lot. Joel’s influence has me spending my dough. But they gave me $150 so I guess I spent my extra. And I paid my Mc and I still have a reasonable amount for food. Roughly $20 a day isn’t bad for a month. And I’ll get Xmas food.

If I can go the rest of this week without buying anything I’ll have a lot extra money. I’ll have to eat rice and soup and such. I have bananas and apples and not much of an appetite. So it should work out. I might even have extra for my Mc which would be awesome.

I want to pay it off before July, maybe I will get lots of birthday money in April and I can use that on it. That would be so nice to spend summer with all my extra money, having my full $484 for everything. I shouldn’t have spent money on random bullshit in earlier months this year but I guess I wasn’t thinking. I remember wasting $70 on clothes I don’t need. Oh well.

I’ve wasted a lot of money on clothes in my life. I’m doing better now but still spending on cds and stuff but I need these cds cuz they are super important music to me. Even though I won’t have a lot of extra spending money I’ll still spend money on things. I try to buy low money food and not eat out much. I think everything will work out and I’ll be paid off before July. I’m excited to be debt free, I will feel so proud.

Joel gets me into money issues kind of. They had $1500 to themselves this month and they’ve already spent almost all of it and it’s only the 7th. They really know how to waste money. I know how to spend and still save and not spend when I’m getting low. If I had $1500 to myself without having to pay rent I would have paid off my credit cards. I’m glad I only have the one credit card.

I’m waiting for my hair to grow and for my Mc to be paid off. I don’t have much else to wait for. I don’t know what kinds of fun things will be happening in springtime summertime because of covid. I wonder if they will solve the virus and everyone can go back to normal. I’m not afraid of the virus and I want to meet new people. But all in due time.

I’m alone a lot but I need to be. Having one best friend who is spiritually inclined and Métis and two spirited is fulfilling enough for my social life. I don’t need much socialization. I like the peace and quiet of the world. I like meditating and praying and being silent and chilling out. I don’t like bullies or loud mouths or rude people. I don’t like dirty stinky people that want to ruin a pure persons clean. I like being clean. I’m also wild and respectful. I love nature and nature loves me. I’m ready for the spring.

I’m gonna be on social assistance for a few more years probably. I don’t know how or where I’ll get a part time job eventually but that will probably be good for me. I just want to keep chilling out for now though.

I get all my time to myself to do whatever I want. That’s a blessing of mine. I’m never bothered by anyone and nobody expects any responsibilities of me except myself. I gotta keep my clothes and dishes clean and bedsheets and body. I have good hygiene and I’m attractive and in decent shape. I’ve got extra tummy poundage but it’s ok it’s not that bad but it’s not the best.

I’m very comfortable and I feel good here. The breeze kisses me and I have a spirit with me that encourages me to feel my best. When I look in the mirror I see beautiful eyes and a nice face. I like myself.

I still dream of Laura a bit but I know I’ll have to wait for death or a miracle day to have any time with her. She completely disregarded my need for love and hurt me deeply. She still looks fun and beautiful but she is not that way to me. Only in my visions is she kind and giving. When I die I will have a lot of satisfying conversations.... in my dreams last night there was a sort of video game with Laura in a car and she was in a wheelchair too and I laughed at her for having a problem in life. Some part of me wants her to have a hard time cuz she made me have such difficult moments for so many years. Her consciousness is riddled with drugs and abuse and she hurt my soul deeply. When I am dead and she is dead I will have a comforting interaction with her and she will probably see why I am fun to love too.

It hurts a lot to find someone fun to love and they don’t feel like loving you back. It hurts a heck of a lot. She was the most elegant beautiful skin I had ever witnessed up close and I fell deeply for her in a way I’ve never experienced before; I lost consciousness yet I was still awake when I fell in love with Laura. I had so many beautiful visions of her... I wondered why nobody else ever could tell how beautiful my love for her was. And I loved her for 8 years. I now feel like I can wait for death or a miracle before I get to talk to her for real.

She made me feel like my life doesn’t mean anything. I felt judged to an insane degree. Slander swarming the air around me, hatred and disgust, rumours and disrespect. There are a lot of angry people in this city of Saskatoon and I dealt with a lot of their inner thoughts about me. Good thing I always know I’m gorgeous and strong and a healer and mighty and beautiful because their slander was unwarranted yet I had to witness it and get through it with a positive new day in my future.

I’ll get to eat sleep and breathe calmly for the next 3 years on social assistance. I wonder when I’ll be weaned off the injection.

Life doesn’t have a lot going on and it is easy. You welcome death and people help you. Be brave enough to suffer and aid will come. For how alone I am, I am still not alone. The spirits bless me and I am kept safe. I have my own family here and my brother died so my life can be more safe with his protection. I fell in love with Laura because love is protective too and the angels blessed me in Laura’s beautiful vision and I got through the toughest part of my life so far.... getting a home to myself.

I am left alone to rumerate and soak up my peace. Nobody has a lot of time for me except my best friend sometimes but she has her own issues and can’t be by my side every time.

I am on a spirit walk to find the nature that needs me.

I’m not close with my mom anymore because she wants me to be feminine and I’ve always been masculine; I feel disrespected by her and it hurts me deeply.

I’m not close with my step dad because he doesn’t like homosexuals and since I came out of the closet I know he has an issue with me.

I’m not close with my dad because he is sick and says horrible things and expects everything to be fine forever. He has serious emotional issues and doesn’t deal with them and he abuses drugs and alcohol and I don’t have any respect for that person.

I don’t like my dads girlfriend because she doesn’t understand what I am and she assumes disgusting things and has a sick understanding of the world. She judges my life and she wastes hers away. I don’t respect her either.

My living triplet brother has shown me time after time that he takes my power away when I am weak and he weakens me more so he can be dominant. He doesn’t respect me and I don’t feel safe around him. He isn’t a good guy and I don’t admire his way of life. He has let me down too many times for me to keep a true love for him.

My older brother is a hermit and never contacts me and he seems like a pussy and he doesn’t enjoy being a man. I lost my communication with him years ago when I was having stressful mental times. Everyone in the family judges me now because I am the crazy one.

My best friend spends time with me out of their convenience and gets me to help them with stuff and we don’t hang out to hang out it’s always to fix some issue in their life. They don’t have the energy to talk to me about what I want to talk about so I feel stepped on and disregarded by them. They say they love me and I know they do but they also don’t have a lot of time for me. I am quiet and calm so they assume I have nothing to do and nowhere to want to be. They are a loud busy person and conceited and annoying and repetitive and they think I’m a pussy but I think they are too. We fight sometimes because they’re not true best friend material for me but they’re all I have. I don’t have a deep thinking artist friend. I don’t have a fun loving musician friend. I just have a self hating erratic friend that doesn’t respect me a lot of the time but is impossible to see that. I am challenged to stick up for myself most times I see them and that’s not a friendship situation. That’s a bully. But they’re all I have for social life so I take what they say with a grain of salt and I enjoy them and their dog as much as I can. They’re still a person that cares about me, they just have a lot of self centred habitual thinking that bothers me.

I don’t have anyone else in my life. My family doesn’t feel like family anymore for years now and I only have one okay friend that my family doesn’t like. So I have no beautiful woman today, I have no beautiful best friend.

I have issues with people and I have a lot of alone time. I feel hurt by everyone and I need to find someone who appreciates me for me.

Time will tell who in this city will fall for me.

I will be respected one day.

And I will live every day until I die.

I probably have over 25000 days to live if I die of old age. That’s a thousand days 25 times over. I have a lot of days to get through.

And the sun will shine and the birds will sing and the fluffy kitties and puppies will play. And the world will be okay. And people will heal.

I weight 62 kgs. And that is not normal for my height. I should be weighting 55 kgs. I am saying this because I have been avoiding it for a long long time. It is not normal to weight that much for my height. It is almost overweight. I am that way because I eat unhealthy. I used to be 55 kgs when I ate normally.  Now I am 62 because I eat more food than my body needs a day. Most of it are sweets, mostly chocolate and cookies. Also flour. The quantity of food that I eat a day is NOT normal.  I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. Eating sweets and flour is not good. They have no nutritional value. Blaming  my eating habbits on others is not nomal as well. There is always a way to avoid eating unhealthy even when you are surrounded by said foods... and your whole family eats only bread, meat and sweet stuff... ( I am a vegetarian and generally a healthy food enthusiast) I am harming myself by doing this. Eating that much food leads to illnesses. Processed food is bad. Sugar is also bad in such great quantities (that I consume). My skin has gone bad and It didn’t use to be. My stomach has gone bigger and that is not how it should genetically be. My arms have gotten wobbly and that is not normal for my build. Some people are genetically disposed to be more curvy and floofy. I am not one of those people. My body is built tall, kind of muscly and bone-y. Fat on me looks unnatural and not flattering. It looks like it is obvious that my eating habbits are off. 

Here are things that I will start doing from tomorrow:

I will stop listening to my grandmother about my weight, she has a skewed view on how people should look like which are different than normal (and mine as well). No matter how important her opinions are to me, I will not listen to her on that particular topic as she is not right. Whenever she makes a coment on it I will just say that she’s the only person that thinks that way and ask her politely to stop commenting on the way I look. :)

I will refuse food. Say things like : “No, thank you.” “I’ve alerady eaten. I am no longer hungry.” “I just had lunch.” ‘I am trying to be healthier, therefore I can not accept this *insert sweet thing/other offering*.” “I am not hungry.” when offered food I am unable or don’t want to eat.

  I will give food that I can not eat to other people, they’ll be happy, I’ll be happy, deal. (Or I will save it for later.) I can always get given foods or make them, they will no go extinct once they’ve been eaten!!! They will always exist. The fact that somebody brought me a more expensive kind of chocolate does not mean that I have to eat it all in one sitting. I will try to eat it slowly, savour it, thoroughly enjoy it, don’t just gulp it down like it is water, that way the meaning of that food’s existance gets completely lost! When I crave sugar I will just drink water or tea.

I received a huge cup for christmas, I will drink water from it in the morning before I’ve done anything else. Also I will bring a bottle of water to school and drink the whole thing. ( I’ve been doing this for the past few days which is good).

I will chew slowly, be mindful of what is going inside my body.

I will try to fix my posture. Stay more straight, stop slouching, keep my neck straight as well

I will stop looking at pictures of skinny and fashionable people as that gets me in the wrong kind of mindset. Which is - “If you get skinny you’ll be happy and your whole life will come together harmoniously, everyone will love you, you’ll be the besty at everything, you will stop hating yourself.” That Is not the truth. I can achieve these things by working for them, not by looking a certain way. Looking the right way will come by itself when I sort out my mindset and my life and my priorities.

I will limit my internet access and start doing more productive things, like drawing for my exams, writing essays, reading for my exams, reading books I enjoy, tidying, cleaning, washing, taking a shower, doing my nails, doing the loundry, taking a walk, walking the dog, paying bills, shopping for necessary things etc.

I will truly realize that my flaws are NOT in my physical appearance, they are in the WAY I LOOK AT THINGS! They are in the way I do things slightly unright... And that can be fixed!

The point after all is to be happy. The point of life - to do things that make you happy. I will stop self-sabotaging myself. (”you are your own’s worst enemy.”)

Hey guys! I've been taking a break from politics since the funeral; I got really fucked up because of that, the money issues and everything else that's been going on. I decided to focus for a bit on getting my financial situation sorted, getting my health sorted, and getting back on track with my transition.

I do have some good news though! The debt people didn't add any additional admin fees (on top of those already added) and even offered me a small discount (given my situation and because I paid it all in one go over the phone - they were really kind about it), and a friend of a friend gave me her old mattress because she was moving out, so I've managed to pay off the bills and debts and buy a month of food! I feel absolutely incredible! I couldn't be more thankful for all of the help and support I've had on here and from friends, it's got me through such a hard and hopeless time. Sitting here with a sandwich and glass of juice and knowing that I'm not gonna get an angry phone call demanding money I don't have... it feels like breathing after remembering to take my inhaler for once. xD

I'm really sorry that I'm not ready to come back to politics and debating just yet. I can't afford any extra mental strain at the moment; a family member of mine is really sick and I'm focusing a lot of my energy on being there for them, and what's left is going towards tidying, making phone calls and looking after myself. I will be back soon, so please don't unfollow or think that Mod Vape is hopping on the vanishing mod bandwagon - y'all can't get rid of me that easy.

As you can see from this photo, the moving boxes went to good use in the end despite our not moving. The boys built shantytowns, cities, camps with the boxes for days until I tired of my yard looking like an encampment area and took them all to the recycling bin at Bali’s work.

We have settled back into this house and are looking at staying another few years. Our neighbors are still nervous and encouraged us to get the “for sale” sign out of the front yard quickly and then when Bali brought home his friends large moving truck to move out all the old fridges, washers and stoves that he will no longer be selling to used appliance shops a neighbor called anxiously wondering “who is moving???”

It will take them some time to recover from our attempt to move out and onward to the mountains. It feels good to be wanted and appreciated in your neighborhood and I will focus on that.

I have changed my attitude and mind about many things these days. I was watching Bruce Lipton the other day while cleaning my ceiling fans and he was talking about a constant state of prayer.  The idea being that prayer does work wonders but not if only done now and then or when in need. The energy fades and we go back to suffering. If we can internalize this lovely state of inner communion with our Creator and the Universe we will live a life that feels full of goodness and light. We will find that comfort and peace when challenges arise and have more happiness from within despite the lack of our surrounding circumstances.

Our world…our reality begins in our mind. I learned this many moons ago but have failed to take it as seriously as my life depends on it. After going through a short-lived depression or dark period I have realized that this should be my main focus. Being in a state of infinite loving prayer and communion with my Father, calling in Christ energy to fill me up, guide me in my words and actions every moment, and living in deeply rooted faith…now that is true wealth.

How does this look and feel in one’s everyday life? How does a housewife live in this Zen-like state when not polishing floors in a monastery and floating about quiet gardens in a simple robe? How do we have peace when not living high up in the mountains with like-minded souls?

We create it to the best of our abilities right where we are.

I put up a reed fence in my front yard to create the illusion of some private sanctuary.

This doesn’t block out everything or make me invisible to people on the street but it feels cozy and blocks some of that energy just coming into my yard. I don’t feel so out on the street while gardening. I’ve been weeding and harvesting, planning new Fall gardens and recreating that space since and enjoy being out there more.

I then spent days out in the backyard cleaning, rearranging plants and outdoor furnishings, sweeping the patio and cleaning up my work table in the garden. I’ve planted seedlings, a strawberry patch, artichokes, and two banana trees, and will put in all my winter greens in the next few days.

Planning my next planting and cleaning up my outdoor spaces has helped me to reconnect to my home and settle in again. I feel good to make things pretty and productive around me.

I wash my floors and hang my laundry while practicing silence. I sleep in each morning and enjoy the delicious feeling of a soft bed and hearing my boys chatter and cook with their father on weekend mornings. I enjoy a big sweet, creamy mug of coffee while reading over two of my favorite books right now; The Everyday Bible with Comments by Joyce Meyers and The Complete Writings by Florence Scovel Shinn. Another book I’ve enjoyed in the past is Autobiography Of A Yogi with Paramahansa Yogananda. 

These books help me understand the world, seen and unseen. It builds my faith through an understanding of the Universe and God’s ways. It expands my small world around me.

I practice giving thanks to all the things that I am blessed with.

I adore this little dachshund that was given to us by the neighbors who found her to be too much work. We find her to be a delight and enjoy how small and fun with all her young little puppy ways of taking joy in everything all day long. She explores the garden as I plant my seeds and patiently allows the boys to carry her around like a baby. She learns quickly and barks at me when I ignore her. We search together for that squeaky chicken toy and I love kissing her soft blond, freckled nose that is so long and silly looking.

I give thanks for this charming home that hasn’t leaked in the winter or given us any trouble whatsoever. I give thanks that the neighborhood is quiet these days, even on the back street. I give thanks for a husband that works whatever job he needs to work to pay our bills without complaint or needing something big with a fancy title. Not many are humble enough to work a job that pays little and the work is less than satisfying without moaning about it. I give thanks that my children are healthy and smart…not only that but also wise and compassionate.

The more I appreciate all I have and my surroundings from the cast iron pan that used to be my mothers to the sound of the train across the river in the mornings, the birds that fill my yard and the old and sweet downtown we can walk to…the less I desire. I am feeling more full each day. More satisfied. I begin to wonder what it is that I need or want more than what I’m already graced with?

When I think about my writing I asked myself what can I write that would be fun for me, not what would make me more money. When I think about us moving elsewhere I asked what we truly need and the answer is just a bigger back yard for more space for the dogs and boys and gardens but as for the house, we have more than enough space with this 1000 sq ft home.

Abraham Hicks talks about this all the time with Law of Attraction seminars. People think they want more money, fame, success in careers, bigger houses, shiny and new cars. But what they truly want is to be happy, at peace, loved, surrounded by good friends and family.  We think that the money and success will bring all that but often it doesn’t at all. It brings a new and strange sort of trouble and loneliness.

All the people searching out there to manifest this and that…I say turn within and find joy in your life right now where you live, not when you move to a better town (as I thought). Love who you are as you are not thinner, more educated, better dressed, after that facelift or body sculpting or next diet that will bring a miraculous transformation with the weight. Love the person you’re with just as they are or let them go so someone else can do this for them. Appreciate your children as they are and let go of getting them to “act right” or be more quiet, smart, and so on.

I’m not crazy about my hair but I’m sure grateful I have some. I’m not wild about this body but it works well and all the limbs are in working order as well. I wish I could play the piano and speak several languages. I cannot but I can write and that is a very fun outlet.

I appreciate other homes and gardens of the perfectionist out there but I enjoy my shabby chic style and funky garden filled with bugs and the common stray cat.

My life is designed just for me with all my quirks and moods. I find that as I learn more about myself that I have things just right for me and all of my family.

When I do things now it’s done with the energy of fun and creativity. I learn things that inspire me, watch movies that delight me, read books that either heal, motivate, or just immerse me in a world of make-believe. When we eat food it is for nourishment and pleasure. Fresh foods, meals from scratch are pleasing and sometimes an already made dish from the freezer section is just as pleasing (wink, wink).

There is no judgment of what I do anymore. I mind my business with the neighbors and keep my nose in my yard and I find that the more kindness and understanding I have toward others human nature, the more I’m able to forgive and love myself. It is creating a softer and more feminine woman.

Letting go of control is the most freeing of all the acts I’ve been practicing. I put everything in God’s hands and then my helpmate. I let everyone figure out their stuff and I go curl up on the couch and watch my new lazy treat; a Spanish soap on Netflix. The more I just enjoy and give to myself without my old militant ways of driving myself like a brutal master, the more I enjoy and give to my family. There is no guilt in being and finding the luxuries in life. I am not spending money we don’t have or letting the house go to pot, or the stove go cold. As a matter of fact, I’m more productive but in a very well-paced, slower, more enjoyable way.

My tasks are done with a bit of ceremony and ritual. This week I felt that there was too much to get done, I would never finish and the more I did the more needed to be done. It felt endless, yet I slowed down and took one task at a time, being in the moment with each chore and counting my small riches and blessings as I worked. Within a few days my home and yards, gardens and garage where all in order, clean and tidy. I celebrated with junk food, nonalcoholic beer and two Godzilla movies with my boys last night. We cuddled with only candlelight so we could create the theater-like atmosphere and ate too many Doritos. It was so fun! Today I’m writing and will do some reading, shopping, gardening, but all in fun and play.

I can feel my mind relax. It isn’t forcing itself back to that default space of self-inflicted suffering that it’s so used to. It takes time, sometimes years to retrain your mind to go toward the light and not back to that dark place it is so used to where it finds all its broken toys and sad stories, worldly worries and past guilts. It takes work to lead it to green fields filled with flowers and sunshine. But in the end, it’s so worth it. The peace and inner smile that take up residence inside are worth the work.

What are some things you like to do on the weekends? Hang out with family and friends, take photos, driving and exploring.

Is there something you do on the weekend that you don't do during the week? Stay up late and then sleep in.

What is your living situation like? I live alone with my dog and cat.

• If not do you wish it was? Yes, I need things to be tidy and organized, otherwise I feel disorganized mentally. It may not be as tidy as others would like, but for me, as long as it is tidy and has a place, I am content.

What are some of your goals for your daily life? To live as healthy as I can to avoid any health issues that I have experienced in the past, to eat healthier than I have, get out and walk at least once a day, and accomplish work tasks for that day.

Can you describe a typical day for you from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed? I usually wake up around 8, get to work by 10am, work until my work is done 5-8pm, take breaks at work to take my puppy for a walk, eat dinner, go to bed by midnight or 1am at the latest.

What time of day do you feel the most alert/happy? Night time, I am very much a night owl.

What do you think having a routine means? Having a routing is a great way to stay organized and on task for the things you need to get done that day.

Do you have a daily/weekly routine(s) If so, What are some of your daily/weekly routines? Daily routines include working, taking my puppy for a walk, living as healthy as I can.

Weekly tasks include accomplishing tasks needed for that week, and communicating with family and friends, grocery shopping, paying bills.

What tools do you use to plan or remind yourself of activities or a routine if any? I use a calendar on my phone, excel spreadsheet for finances, make lists if I think of something I need to do.

Do you think having a daily routine would/does benefit you? Why or why not? Yes, otherwise I feel disorganized and chaotic.

Have you done any research / read articles about having a routine? A little bit, but nothing recently.

How often would you say you search for things involving lifestyle: blogs, articles, magazines etc. A few times a week, depending on what’s going on in my life.

• What would that look like to you? How to stay on task, focused, and accomplish tasks even when I deal with health issues.

• Why are those your favorite? Calendar on my phone and my e-mail.

What are some of your favorite apps to use? Why those? How do you use them? How often do you use them? Calendar, e-mail, and Quickmemo on my phone. I’ve used other apps and these are the best I’ve found.

If you could make an app for keeping track of a routine what would be some of the features you would want? Reminders that aren’t too annoying, but at the same time help you stay focused, and don’t go away until you finish them.

Have you ever failed to stick to a routine? If so, why do you think that was? Health issues have derailed my routine.

Do you have any medical conditions that you think might affect your ability to stick to a regular schedule or routine? Yes, I have an auto-immune disease where I have good and bad days, symptoms can come and go unexpectedly, but stress can make things worse. I am currently on an immune suppressant medication to keep me in remission. Being on an immune suppressant is difficult to deal with because I have to try my best to avoid getting sick/infections, etc. If I do get sick, it is harder to deal with than most people, and it takes longer for me to recover.

Do you think your profession has an impact on your routine? No, in fact my profession and job has helped. My boss has worked with me when I have good and bad days, I just need to stay in contact with work and if for some reason I can’t come to work, I just need to let them know. Then as long as I accomplish my tasks, whether at work or from home, my boss is happy with my work. It helps significantly with my stress because I don’t have to worry about missing a day here or there.

To what degree do you think other people impact your routine? I tend to surround myself with people who understand my health situation and are supportive. I can’t have toxic, selfish, dramatic, stressful people in my life because they tend to drag me down and cause unneeded stress.

Would you be more likely to do something if someone was holding you accountable?

• If so what does that accountability look like? Yes, because it is a task that is needed for someone else, not myself and I tend to put others before myself. I also seek acceptance from others, so I push myself to gain that, sometimes in an unhealthy way. But those are underlying mental issues I have dealt with my whole life and I am trying to learn healthy ways to process and resolve these issues.

If we came back in 5 years to have this conversation again, what would you like to be different? I would hope my life and my daily/weekly routine would be more organized, accomplished, and my health wouldn’t be as large of a factor as it is now.

I asked them for the other drivers insurance info, but they said I would have to wait for the police report and it would include that information.
