So.. tell me again. You met this guy—“
“At a bar, unintentionally.”
“Riiight, but you were being nosey?”
“No! Not nosey! Something felt off about him, I couldn’t pull my glance away.”
Your friends head shook in disbelief, it was the day of the party. It was in a tavern like building, a bit off the road from the actual city itself. Your family had rented a room within the building, on the other side of the bar-like dinning area. Your eyes scanned the room, sighing.
“Do you remember anything at all?”
“Clear as day.. how wild is that? I even had the worst hangover this morning.” Your head felt like it was on cloud nine anytime you thought about last night, making your stomach flutter. Ugh, you hated this feeling.
“Wonder if it’s some weird fate.”
You shook your head, smiling at the even thought of that.
“I highly doubt I’d meet my soulmate at a bar.”
“No no, not that.”
Your eyes scanned your friend again, confused by her sudden change of tone. She leaned closer to you as you two stood away from the crowd itself.
“When you worked for S. T. A. R. S. Y/N, you do say you miss it sometimes. What if he’s apart of it or something?”
Your eyes widened, in shock and disbelief at her statement. There’s no way Leon would be with them, not with how he is. Although, you really only saw and talked to him when he was drinking. You looked back forward, con-jumbled by the thought of even going back to S. T. A. R. S.
“I’m gonna go take a walk,” Before your friend could say anything, you walked off to one of the bathrooms in the main area. Crowded with people, you managed to push through to the bathroom. Surprisingly, it’s empty.
You walked to the mirror, staring at yourself for a while. Your mind raced with theories, explanations, anything to find an answer for the feelings you had around Leon last night.
‘It had to be from the alcohol...’
Straightening out your silky black dress, barely reaching your knees. Your eyes scanned your reflection over before you heard something hit the wall in one of the stalls, your head instinctively turning in the direction of the sound.
Your gut twisted as your body turned fully around, waiting in silence.
“Maybe its best that I don’t. My curiosity already got me in this mess.” Listening to your gut, you quickly made your way out of the bathroom. Gathering your surroundings, you made your way through the crowd to the open bar across the room.
Sitting down at the end, you attempted to gather yourself again. Your shoulders loosened as you relaxed, sighing. You overheard commotion behind you, but this time you had that familiar feeling. Focusing in on the conversation behind you, something stuck out.
“This is serious, we wouldn’t have come out of our way to be here if we weren’t all in danger.”
That, voice.. why was it so familiar—
Your head shot up, hearing a loud scream come from the other side of the room. Your body flew from the seat as you got to your feet, in heeled boots. Your eyes sharped on the area, everybody else sitting in shock as a few employees ran towards the bathrooms.
“Wait.. that thud—”
Without finishing your thoughts, a loud bang filled the air as a bright light flew out from the bathroom hallway, people hit the floor as your body hit the wall. A sharp sting flew up your back and sides as you barely managed to pick yourself back up, your eyes darted back and forth around the room. Lifeless bodies laid waste, smoke filled the room—others scattering to get out of the room.
A hard force grabbed your arm, taking your eyes off the room reaching for what had grabbed you. You shoved your body into the figure grabbing you in the commotion, shoving them into a wall behind the bar area, knocking you both over as you’re pulled down. Flipping yourself over you managed to straddle the stranger below you, grabbing their collar as you angrily ripped them up off the floor to face you.
“Who the fuck are y-“ Your voice demanding and loud, but caught off guard as you recognized that startled face.
“Leon?!”
The both of you in shock, lost for words before you hear footsteps in the room. Ducking lower behind the counter, you peered up to see two figures, three guys dressed in all black.. alike to military men. A woman, slick blonde hair, and a huge— mutant man beside her. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, who were these guys?
“Find her. Rid the rest.”
The men ran off into the building, some scrounging the area as the two other figures fled to a nearby truck.
“What the—“ You were pulled back down again, turned to face Leon who was slumped against the wall listening as well.
“This isn’t what I meant by seeing you again.” Half-assed, he grinned at you. Your eyes pierced through his, annoyed and in pain from hitting the wall like a god damn rag doll.
“Are you trying to give me a reason to kill you?!” You scolded, clenching your teeth as he shrugged.
“Leon, what the fuck is going on?” Trying to keep your voice down as the sound of boots hit the floor. Quickly moving closer to you—then, dead silence. The two of you froze, looking at him in fear as the sound of men talking grew closer to your hiding spot. Leon pulled you over to his side, leaning over to you as he whispered something in your ear.
“You need to trust me.”
“Trust you—?!”
“Either we die or you trust me for right now.”
Yelling in a whisper, your face confused and irritated. Sighing, you respond.
“Fine. Make it quick.”
He grinned, pulling a pistol from a tan-looking holster hooked onto his jeans. He shot up, two point-blank shots as he moved back down to you.
“All clear?” You asked, straight faced. The pain in your ribs and back took over the fear you felt internally, although being in shock by the sudden attack on the tavern. Still wondering about who those people were, what they were doing and what was even going on— you felt light-headed again. Not even realizing Leon took down two other guys and managed to lift up your chin, lifting your head up from staring down at the floor.
“Y/N?” His face filled with worry as he held your chin up, your cheeks flushed to a rosy pink as you ripped your head away from his hand. Shaking your head, you glared at him in embarrassment— red cheeks shinning like ambulance lights during the night. Leon chuckled at your attempt to be frustrated, but what was complete embarrassment.
“W-What?! I just saw you shoot down two guys!” Your voice stuttered, huffing as you stood up from the floor— brushing off your dress.
“Four, actually.” He cocked his pistol while putting it back into the holster, looking up at you from the corner of his eye— still having that same sly grin across his face. His blue eyes pierced right through yours, playing stupid doesn’t seem to get you far with him. Your eyes spun around the room, reminding you of what had just happened.
Furniture broken into bits and pieces, windows shattered, a few bodies sprawled across the room, the two big doors leading into the room smashed open, bullet holes in the pillars. The feeling of a pit, dragging your stomach to the floor filled your whole body. As much as you wished to pull your attention away from the havoc you couldn’t, it got worse with every moment you stared. None of this felt real to you. It all felt staged, as if this was some sick joke. But it wasn’t.. it was all real.
“Leon—“ you breathed, your breath was short and hesitant.
“You get used to it.” His voice was bland, no emotion attached to it what’s so ever, but this didn’t surprise you.
“We need to move, let’s go.” Trying to keep his cold composure, he couldn’t for very long around you. His eyes scanned you over, then again— you tilted your head as you stared at him. Cheeks flourished, you pushed by him as you made your way to the doors.
“Will you quit looking at me like that?” You mumbled, taking a deep breath as you curled a part of your hair behind your ear. Leon rubbed the back of his head, walking over to you— taking the lead.
“Can’t help it sometimes.” He cajoled, looking back at you as you both make your way down the hallway. The dead silence filled the atmosphere around the two of you, slowly walking down the elongated hallway.
“Who were those guys?” You asked, keeping your eyes on all directions of the hallway. The emergency lights had been turned on, not giving much on-look of what lies ahead. Leon turned his head back to glance at you before looking back forward, his pistol held tightly in his hand.
“Have no clue,” he scoffed, “—probably working for the asshole who’s behind this.” The sound of your footsteps echoed through the halls, the feeling of uncertainty filling your body. This was all happening too fast, your mind felt crushed between the flood of emotions— causing you to become light-headed again. Keeping your composure as you rounded the corner, Leon stopped dead in his tracks. Signaling you to back up slowly, you anxiously stepped back behind the corner as he went ahead of you.
“Leon?” Another male voice called out from the corner, causing you to peer around the corner.
“Chris—?!” You gasped in a whisper, the two of them greeting each other. Your mind clogged itself in a fog, now nothing made sense in your head.
“Y/N.” A more blunt-like serious tone called out to you, pulling you to walk around the corner. Your eyes widened, it was him— it’s been years since you two saw one another. Taking a deep breath, you approached them both in a confident manner— Chris’ face in disbelief when he recognizes you.
“Never thought I’d see you again, Y/N.” He greeted you, helping you to relax just a tad bit. You nodded, “It has been a couple years.” Chris returned a small smile to you as he looked back over to Leon, puzzled over how you two knew one another.
“They took Rebecca,” He confirmed, Leon’s face shifted to surprise— then confusion.
“Why would they take her?”
“I’m not sure,” he began, “but I have a bad feeling it was over the vaccine.”
“We need to get moving.” Chris turned to you, “You don’t have to come wit—“
“I’m coming. Can’t talk me out of it this time, Chris.” You joke in a sarcastic manner, he smiled back in approval as the three of you took off down the hallway together. The loud sound of helicopter propellers grew louder as you grew closer to the front door, Chris throwing open the doors as you’re greeted with deafing sounds of a helicopter. Making your way to the back, the three of you quickly made your way into the back as the door shut behind you, being able to hear one another again.
“Thought we lost you guys, man!” Another male voice peeled out from the head of the plane, you kept yourself a bit hidden beside Leon. You glanced around the helicopter, two men sat in the front as you noticed a female sitting on one of the seats. She looked up to see Leon and Chris, Chris walking up to the front of the plane.
“Glad to see you two made it in one piece.” She smiled softly, you breathed in relief she didn’t ask questions.
At least.. so you thought.
“Who’s your friend?” Leaning to the side, she aimed right at you. Your breath of relief suddenly hitched as your teeth clenched— your body going into full panic. Leon glances back at you, motioning you to step to his side instead of hiding.
“She used to work for S. T. A. R. S.” He disclosed, making it well known to everybody on board.
“Oh? You might’ve known Rebecca then.” She perked up in curiosity, your eyes widened for a second— that’s the voice you recognized earlier.
“We were friends while she was still under S. T. A. R. S.”
“Name’s Nadia,” She introduces herself, smiling at you. “And you are?”
“Y/N.” You returned a smile back, she nodded as she turned her head back to the front. You looked over at Leon, as if he was waiting for you to turn to him. The two of you smiled at one another, “Can’t say my short-lived vacation ended all bad.” He implied, turning his body to you as you mimicked his body movements.
“Hm, I wonder why?” You surmised, both of you exchanging desirable smirks at one another, barely noticing Chris approaching Leon from the front of the helicopter.
“Not to intrude on your little moment over here,” He teased, looking straight at Leon as he turned his head to Chris.
“Real funny.” He flatly responded, the both of them walking to the end of the helicopter as they knelt down in front of a laptop. You observed for a bit before finding a seat, smiling to yourself as you shook your head.
The ride felt long, but thankfully gave you long enough to sort your thoughts out. Your body eased, the pain in your ribs ceased, the light-headed feeling from the constant clogged theories and thoughts decompressed— although it was temporary, you kept yourself built-up for what was about to come.
You felt Leon get up from beside you, being so engulfed in your thoughts. Your head turned to him, Chris and Nadia heading to the back of the helicopter— causing you to get up and follow behind him. The back opened, revealing two vehicles— barely being able to hear them as you joined Nadia’s side. She looked over at you and gently smiled, leaning over to you.
“You’re going to help me out here.” Shouting over the sound of the wind gusting through the propellers, you nodded. Watching Chris quickly walk out of the helicopter, you looked over at Leon who had looked back over at you.
“Leon—“ You stopped, realizing it was too loud to even speak normally. Sighing, you begin to turn back—
“Y/N.”
You feel a hand on your waist, looking down as you traced it to see Leon stopping you. Your head turning with your body to face him, your stomach doing somersaults.
“You need to trust me.” He restated, your stomach sank even at the thought of him not coming back after all of this.
“But what if you need help? Or if you’re hurt and I can’t—“
Suddenly you’re cut off by lips pressing against yours, the grip on your waist tightened out of fear. You felt lightheaded again, grabbing his arm in response as the two of you pulled away. Without saying anything to one another, Leon moved his other hand to the back of your head. Shifting as he kissed the top of it, this wasn’t anything you’d expect. He didn’t seem like an affectionate type— or somebody with much emotion at all. Your eyes traced to his, both lost in a dwindling gaze. He smiled softly at you, moving out of the helicopter. Jumping onto the bike, he followed beside Chris— who was in a military-like Jeep.
A smile slowly filled your lips,
“What a wild vacation.”
