Chapter 2: Late Night Tea

Chapter 2: Late Night Tea
If you were to ask how the Addams manor in New Jersey looked, you’d receive various calls for haunted, a few pleas for gothic, and a chorus of magnificent. A monolithic home suited only for the Addams and those they allowed into its halls. This was not the case for the Reserve family home though, it was a massive log cabin crafted from smooth sanded oak logs, with massive awnings and tall ceilings. Furs lined the walls in a gargantuan living room near 3 stories high, with windows of equal height, a row of mounted head trophies ringed the semicircular space. Near the windows sat a shining black grand piano, and before that sat 3 couches in a half moon around a fireplace on the right wall. The left held what appeared to be a minibar, the walls lined with various bottles of spirits and wine. Down the hall to the right contained a large kitchen with cabinets made of the same oak, and charcoal gray granite countertops, an island lay in the middle with a large gas stovetop. To the left one could find the master suite, as well as a conference room, and a bathroom.
The upstairs was far more simple, a balcony jutted out from the wall with a railing made of twisting branches, along the wall five separate doors sat closed and quiet. None of these rooms were remarkable; inside a queen size bed awaited with thick comforters to guard against the cold, a desk with spare pens and notebook, and an enchanted wardrobe designed to give the occupant the perfect outfit depending on the occasion. At the end of the balcony lay one extra door, in which came another enchanted room. The bathroom was enchanted so that any time the door was opened from the outside, the occupant would be moved to a liminal space mimicking the bathroom until they left, by doing this the house was insured against having too few bathrooms when many people were staying at once. What really tied the home together though was that all the strange angles of light, and conservative use of it as well, led to stretching deep shadows dancing along the walls and floor. A chandelier hung above it with all the candles lit in dancing flames that only added to the shadowy spectacle.
But save the best for last, and only an Addams knows the truth in this, we come to the garden outside. Carpeted by bioluminescent moss, with mushrooms of all sizes and varieties lined up in neat and colorful rows, such an effect can only be upheld by magic as well, but it is the magic of the Keeper that allows these dark and damp loving little morsels to thrive in the dry environment. Beyond the garden rested a small lake where all manner of little devils called home, yet the water remained so still it shined like a mirror of the night sky.
As both rider and hearse approached the building from the outside, Corvus let out a sharp whistle that rang clear and sharp into the mists. A moment later small blue flames lit up the edges of the driveway and led to an overhang where Lurch should park the vehicle. Inside though, Pubert was getting excited and jumping up and down on his seat as he peered out the window to watch the flames. But as soon as his eyes began to glaze over Morticia plucked him up and set him on her lap, out of sight of the little spirits outside.
“Be careful my little cat’s eye. The Will O’ Wisps are beautiful, but more than happy to trick you and lead you to your death, and I expect all my children to die in their 90’s at the youngest,” she ran her hand down the side of his cheek, “do you hear me my darling?”
“Yes mom.”
After pulling up to the house, Corvus led them on a quick tour of the building and showed each of them to their rooms while Lurch unpacked the car. Thing had crawled out of Wednesday’s pack and rested on her shoulder as they paced the echoing halls. Truth be told, it was far more comfortable and familiar than she had thought it would be. It had an eerie aura that all Addams homes tended to possess. She could see how care had been implemented into each facet of the cabin and that Corvus was going beyond his duties as Keeper by far. His singular goal and objective was to guard and report all things that Addams generations later down the line might need to solve mysteries or curses of their own without the same daunting task of months of research. In the basement, Wednesday knew the largest library of family journals and diaries was collected for this purpose alone. But Corvus had gone beyond that and turned the entire Reserve into a variable stockpile of magical components. With the land and beasts thriving as she had seen so far they could host an entire army of witches and never run dry of phantom tears, Grimm fangs, or gryphon blood.
Wednesday wanted into that library, there was no chance in her lifetime she’d find herself unprepared for a meeting such as this, she needed to learn everything about werewolves as she could in the time being to give her an edge. There were of course the obvious weaknesses she had learned from her father as a child; silver, wolfsbane, and fire were all good ways of either cornering or ending such a beast. But you had to get close to use those. She needed something that would manipulate or control them, something to perhaps make them more…agreeable, to her family’s terms in the new treaty. Whilst her mind had been wandering, Corvus finished the tour and said he would be in the kitchen making hemlock tea if anyone wished to join him.
First things first though, she needed a shower to wash off all of her parents' doting affection for each other that sat like a film on her skin from the long drive starting in New Jersey. It oozed off of them like tar. She excused herself to freshen up, giving Thing explicit instructions to stay in her room and check every corner of it for hidden passageways or places to hide things. Something deep in her soul, something she could feel was connected to her psychic power, was warning her the negotiations would last much longer than anticipated. Wednesday had brought this up with her mother once already, but Morticia had smiled and said her own abilities as a dove had offered no such warning, and that she felt things would go even better than expected.
After her shower she changed into a pair of black pajamas and decided to go downstairs and have tea with Corvus after all, opting to not re-braid her hair just yet. Nobody but her family was allowed to see her looking anything less than murderous, and the twisted nature of her cousin made her all the more certain that he would take notice of the subtle show of respect she was offering by doing this. The older man was sitting on a barstool and leaned on the counter, one hand wrapped around a still boiling cup of tea while the other flicked through an old tome as though he had read it 7 times already. Perhaps he had, with a lifespan that long she could only imagine the amount of knowledge kept in the crypt of his mind. Her foot scuffed on the uneven flooring between the hallway and kitchen, and without so much as looking Corvus lifted a finger from his book. It traced a delicate rune in the air, leaving behind a trail of dark green in the air that seemed to pull in the light, and utensils began flying through the air as the magic took hold and brewed Wednesday a cup of her own tea that was then set down in front of the seat next to his.
“Care to join me Wednesday? It’s the perfect night for a good read.”
“I’d be more than happy, so long as I’m not interrupting your routine.” He chuckled a bit at that, and placed a bookmark in the old journal before turning to her. In the dark of the night outside she had assumed his eyes had been the same dark brown as the rest of the family, but she could now see her assumption had been wrong. Corvus’s eyes were not just black, they were all black. Pupil, iris, sclera, the entirety were black as the night with the same green sheen you’d find on a beetle’s carapace as the light reflected off of them.
“There’s no routine to ruin, not for family. I’m not allowed many visitors out here so I welcome every opportunity to speak with someone other than Rue.”
“Rue? I wasn’t aware anybody else lived out here.” Wednesday’s confusion was plain on her face, and it made Corvus let out a dry laugh. Another rune traced through the air and all the windows crept open, and he let out a sharp whistle similar to the one from before, but with a musical melody reminding her of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way.’ Out in the darkness of the night came a keening screech, a moment later a small creature sat perched on the windowsill by the sink. It had the head of a great horned owl, with razor sharp talons, and wings stretching out from its shoulders. The body reminded her of a bobcat, large and covered with ashy gray fur with a long curling tail tipped in black. “What is it?”
“She’s a gryphowl, a subsidiary family of gryphons and hippogriffs. They’re endangered now as their blood is easier to harvest than that of their larger family members, and twice as potent. They all share the same amount of magical energy you see, regardless of size, and it causes the magic in a gryphowls blood to condense to fit in such a small package,” Corvus raised his hand and it walked across the counter, leapt onto the island, and rubbed its face against his finger. “She’s as close to a familiar as I’ll ever get, I’ve been taking care of her since she was no bigger than my finger.”
“Fascinating,” Wednesday sat down next to her cousin, held a flat hand out to Rue, and waited. Rue sniffed at her at first, before rubbing her face up and down along Wednesday’s arm before flopping onto one side and resting her head in Wednesday’s palm. “What do you mean by ‘closest you’ll get to a familiar’? All witches have a familiar, it comes with being a witch.” He sucked in a deep breath and nodded at that, a pained expression overcoming his face.
“That’s true enough, but I’m afraid I must be the exception to that rule,” he began to pet the sleek gray fur and check Rue’s toes for barbs, “but an Addams familiar is one and the same as who the curse of love picks for them. Many of our family witches have supernatural partners with animal-like forms or instincts. Your great great aunt Liza was a witch of the highest order, and her husband Leopold was a very powerful werewolf. He served as both the object of her curse and her power.”
“And because you are the Keeper, you’re never allowed to find love,” Wednesday finished.
“That’s right, the only thing that can kill an Addams and make it stick is the loss of our love. Since I cannot love, I cannot die. At least not by any natural or easily obtained supernatural means. Beyond even that, I am a cross between two old and powerful witch bloodlines. My mother was an Addams, as you know, but my father came from a family of green witches known as the Enfants de la Décadence.”
“The Children of Decay,” Wednesday translated the french, and slipped her hand out from under Rue’s head to take a sip of her tea, “what’s the difference between the two?”
“The two of what?”
“What we are and what your father was, what is a green witch? I’ve heard of them but never met one.”
“You have an inquisitive young mind, for sure. A green witch will often forge their own connection or what they refer to as ‘the path,’ to whatever energies within nature most call to them. Some find deity work to their liking, others get along well with bogs or rainforests and use plants to their benefit, and the Children of Decay specialized in all things in nature that broke down the dead, returning their energy to the earth. Mushrooms, fungus, mycelium, insects, mold, scavengers, these are the things my powers tend to relate to. As well as a penchant for simple runic magic granted to me by my mother.”
“I see, thank you for clarifying,” she said and took another sip. Behind her eyes thoughts swirled together and blended in a haphazard sorting system. So green witch blood must also be the reason he looks so young after all this time, no Addams has lived past the age of 80 without at least a few white hairs. Yet he stands here after 200 years not looking a day over maybe 24. “I tend to ask many questions, if it ever becomes overbearing or bothersome please inform me so I can satiate my curiosity with other means.”
“I’ll be sure to, so long as you bring anything of import to me first. You may rule the family one day, but for now little cousin, this is my territory and I know all the secrets it holds. Speaking of which,” from the pocket of his vest he produced a large silver key, inlaid with a large sapphire at the end, “this will give you full access to the library to use at your discretion. Take care of the library and it will take care of you, it’s more alive than you might think.” Corvus winked and picked up his tea, scooping up Rue in his other arm. “I think it’s late enough now that if I don’t sleep, I may just miss the Sinclair’s arrival tomorrow. Goodnight Wednesday, sleep well.”
“Goodnight Corvus, thank you for speaking with me,” she stood with her hands behind her back, “it was enlightening to say the least.” He nodded to her with a wry grin, and began the walk down the hall to his own room.
Tomorrow was both a nerve-wracking thought and an eager chance to prove herself, the restlessness had already gotten into her bones and made a new home for itself. Tonight she would not sleep, she would delve into the library and find any and all information she could on werewolves from her ancestors' personal accounts.
Tonight she would feast on knowledge like a man starved for weeks.

Enhancing Social Gatherings
A barbecue kitchen transforms your backyard into a social hub, encouraging a relaxed, communal atmosphere.
Increasing Property Value
Investing in an outdoor barbecue kitchen can significantly boost your home’s value by appealing to potential buyers looking for well-designed outdoor living spaces.
Planning Your Barbecue Kitchen
Assessing Your Space
When setting up your outdoor barbecue kitchen, evaluate the outdoor space, consider accessibility and proximity to the indoor kitchen, and choose a location that balances exposure to the elements with usability.
Setting a Budget
Set a realistic budget for your outdoor kitchen project. Prioritize essential elements like the grill, countertops, and storage, and add additional features as your budget allows.
What to Consider When Designing Your Barbecue Kitchen
When planning your barbecue kitchen design, it's crucial to consider factors like selecting the right grill and appliances, choosing durable materials and finishes, and ensuring that the outdoor space meets your needs and reflects your style. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:
Grill Selection: Choose a high-quality grill that matches your cooking style and preferences, whether you prefer gas, charcoal, or pellet grilling. Consider the size, features, and performance of the grill to ensure it meets your needs.
Layout and Configuration: Plan the layout and configuration of your barbecue kitchen to optimize functionality and flow. Consider the placement of the grill, countertops, sink, and storage to create a cohesive and efficient cooking area.
Materials and Finishes: Select materials and finishes that are durable, weather-resistant, and easy to maintain. From stainless steel appliances to stone countertops, choose high-quality materials that can withstand outdoor conditions and provide long-lasting performance.

Designing the Layout
The layout of your BBQ Kitchen should prioritize functionality and ease of use. Common layouts include:
Island Layout: Perfect for smaller spaces, this design combines cooking and dining areas in one central unit.
Straight Line Layout: Placing all elements along a single wall, this layout is efficient and space-saving.
L-shaped Layout: It provides ample counter space and separates cooking and prep areas.
U-shaped layout: Offering maximum counter space and allowing for distinct cooking, prep, and dining zones.
Creating a Stylish Outdoor Environment
Choosing a Color Scheme
Your color scheme should complement your home’s exterior and natural surroundings. Neutral tones such as gray, beige, and white create a timeless look, while bold colors can add a modern and vibrant touch. Consider incorporating natural elements like wood and stone to blend seamlessly with the outdoors.
Lighting: Proper lighting enhances both functionality and ambiance. Incorporate a mix of:
Maintenance and Care
Regular Cleaning
Keep your kitchen looking its best with regular cleaning. Wipe down countertops, clean the grill, and store appliances properly when not in use. Cover furniture and appliances to protect them from the elements.
Seasonal Maintenance
Perform seasonal checks to ensure everything is in working order. Inspect for any signs of wear or damage, clean out drains and gutters, and service appliances as needed. This regular maintenance will prolong the lifespan of your outdoor kitchen and keep it functioning smoothly.

Crafting Culinary Spaces: A Comprehensive Modular Kitchen Handbook
Introduction
The kitchen is the heart of a home, and in the realm of modern interior design, modular kitchens have emerged as a popular and practical choice. Modular kitchens offer a systematic and organized approach to kitchen design, providing efficiency, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. This comprehensive handbook explores the world of modular kitchens, offering insights into their design, organization, and the latest trends that transform culinary spaces into hubs of style and convenience.
Understanding Modular Kitchens
1. What is a Modular Kitchen?
A modular kitchen is a modern kitchen design concept that utilizes pre-manufactured modules or cabinets. These modules are tailored to fit seamlessly together, creating a well-organized and visually appealing kitchen space. The modular approach allows for customization, making it possible to adapt the kitchen layout to suit individual preferences and available space.
2. Key Components of Modular Kitchens
Cabinet Systems:
Base Cabinets: These form the foundation of the kitchen and are used for storage. They are typically installed beneath the kitchen countertop.
Wall Cabinets: Mounted on the walls, these cabinets provide additional storage and are ideal for keeping frequently used items within easy reach.
Tall Cabinets: These floor-to-ceiling cabinets are designed for storage of larger items such as pantry items, appliances, and cleaning supplies.
Countertops:
Granite: Durable and visually appealing, granite countertops are a popular choice for modular kitchens.
Quartz: Known for its non-porous surface and low maintenance, quartz is another favored material for countertops.
Appliances:
Built-in Appliances: Modular kitchens often feature built-in appliances like ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers for a streamlined look.
Modular Cooktops: Induction or gas cooktops can be seamlessly integrated into the countertop for a cohesive design.
Storage Solutions:
Pull-Out Trays: These trays make accessing items stored in the back of cabinets easier.
Corner Carousels: Designed for corner cabinets, carousels allow for efficient use of space and easy access.
3. Advantages of Modular Kitchens
Efficiency:
Optimal Space Utilization: Modular kitchens are designed to maximize space, ensuring efficient storage and functionality.

Locked out, Part 3
Read Part I and Part 2
“I’ve never been thanked with pie before,” Jack said, reaching to take the containers out of Eric’s arms before he stepped back to allow Eric to enter his condo.
“You never knew me before,” Eric said, following Jack through the entry and past a large living room area to the kitchen.
Jack set the pies down on a wide granite (yes, definitely granite) countertop that had very little on it. The countertop stretched between a deep sink and KitchenAid range, with a stainless steel Frigidaire side-by-side model on the adjacent wall. A granite-topped island divided the kitchen from the living room, with stools on the living room side turning it into breakfast bar.
“So, um, I found some video of your team,” Jack said, turning away from the still-covered pies.
“You did?” Eric said, stepping further into the kitchen. Maybe Jack expected him to do the honors, since he made the pies? “Umm, which pie do you want? There’s apple and peach. Either will be better if I heat it in the oven. Microwaving it ruins the texture of the crust.”
“Oh, you want pie now?” Jack said. “I don’t usually eat this time of day, but I guess I could apple, I think.”
“I could cut you small slices of both,” Eric said, stepping to the oven. Given the state of the kitchen, he wasn’t entirely sure Jack knew how to turn it on. Which wasn’t fair; Jack probably baked fish or boneless, skinless (flavorless) chicken breasts from time to time. Wait -- this was a gas range with an electric oven. Jack definitely did not appreciate this.
“Once the oven preheats, it’ll be about 10 minutes,” Eric said. “I’d suggest adding ice cream, but …”
“I don’t have any,” Jack said. “I don’t usually eat dessert. Do you really have to heat up the pie?”
“It’s not absolutely necessary,” Eric said. “But if you don’t eat pie often, then when you do, it should be the best it can be, right?”
Jack nodded his agreement with that sentiment.
“It really does taste better warm,” Eric said, carefully cutting small slices, about half of what he would normally serve, from each pie. “Do you have a ceramic plate, something that can go in the oven for a bit? And a pie server? Or a spatula?”
Jack reached into a cupboard where there were white stoneware plates. “There might be something in that drawer,” he told Eric, pointing.
Eric found a yellow triangular server, something that probably came with a pizza delivery or maybe a cake. Jack had set two plates on the counter.
“We can probably put both on one plate,” Eric said. “The slices are small.”
“Aren’t you going to have some, too?” Jack asked.
“I made the pies for you,” Eric said. “But I’ll join you, if you like.”
“There’s no way I can eat this much by myself,” Jack said, and Eric’s heart broke a little. Surely Jack had friends he could share the pies with? Eric rarely got more than a slice -- if that -- of any pie he made and allowed his Haus-mates to eat.
“That’s why I was asking about heating them,” Jack continued. “There’s a table at the team facility where people leave food to share.”
So apparently NHL team facilities weren’t that different from other workplaces.
“Every office I’ve worked in has something like that,” Eric said, cutting two more half-sized slices and plating them. “Or you can freeze them to eat later, or serve when you have people over.”
“A lot of guys already left for the summer,” Jack said.
“You stay here?” Eric asked.
“For most of the summer,” Jack said. “I keep my sponsorships and stuff based here -- it’s close to Boston and not too far from New York -- and I do a lot of charity stuff. I do try to visit my folks for a couple of weeks, but I can get back in between.”
“Where do they live?”
“Montreal, mostly, but they have a cabin in Nova Scotia, too,” Jack said.
“Sounds nice,” Eric said.
“It is,” Jack said. “You said you might be working in Providence this summer? Do you usually go back to Georgia?”
The oven beeped that it was ready, so Eric slid the plates in. “Those will be hot when they come out,” he said.
Jack pulled a potholder from a drawer behind him.
“Anyway, yes, if I get this internship, it will be the first time I haven’t gone home for the summer,” Eric said. “My mother’s not real happy with the idea, to be honest.”
“How do you feel about it?” Jack asked. “Do you think you’ll be homesick?”
Eric shrugged.
“Maybe a little?” he said. “I’ll miss Mama, of course, and MooMaw, and even Coach, but I just don’t … fit in in Madison.”
“You’ll miss your old hockey coach?” Jack asked.
Eric laughed.
“While my hockey coach was great, no,” Eric said. “Coach is my dad. He’s the local high school football coach, and everyone calls him that. I wasn’t all that close to my hockey coaches, not like my figure skating coach when I was a kid. Katya was a force to be reckoned with. But I always called her Katya.”
“That explains some things,” Jack said.
“Like what?” Eric said.
“LIke how you played rec league hockey and still made an NCAA division I team,” Jack said. “And how you skate fast enough for that to make sense. I said I watched some of your games, and you don’t look like someone who was new to high-level athletics or the commitment it takes. Your checking game could use some improvement, though.”
“No kidding,” Eric deadpanned. “Do you want me to make coffee or something?”
“I only have caffeine in the morning,” Jack said. “But I have a single-cup drip filter if you want some. I was going to have milk.”
“Milk is good,” Eric said.
Jack got out two glasses and a carton of low-fat milk.
“So I’m guessing you were a pretty good figure skater?”
“I was the 2010 Southern Regional Junior champion,” Eric said.
“Why’d you switch?”
The oven beeped again, and Eric picked up the potholder and turned to get the pie out.
“The short version is we moved and we were too far from my coach to make it realistic to practice every day,” Eric said. “I really couldn’t improve -- or even maintain my level -- without that.”
“But if you were that good, couldn’t you have moved away from your parents to get the coaching you needed?” Jack said. “I left home at 16 for hockey. Or did you not want to?”
Eric put the two plates on the island and said, “That would be the long version.”
“I’ve got time,” Jack said. “If you want to tell me.”
Eric looked around at Jack’s condo, he wasn’t sure for what. A sign, maybe. He was pretty sure it would be safe to say he was gay. NHL players didn’t go around beating up random gay college boys they met through automotive misfortunes. But he liked Jack, and Jack seemed to be taking an interest in him, and he didn’t want to cut what seemed like an incipient friendship with a lonely hockey player short by outing himself.
The condo didn’t give him any indication about how Jack would react, It was tastefully decorated in grays and blues, with large black-and-white artsy photos of hockey rinks and memorabilia from Jack’s six years as a Falconer. Yes, Eric had Googled him last night, just to have an idea what he was getting into going to his condo. Yes, he knew there was an overdose when Jack was 18, knew that the hockey world thought the Falcs were taking a chance when they drafted Jack the next year. That taking that gamble had paid off for the Falconers in perennial playoff appearances and one Stanley Cup and absolutely no scandals involving Jack Zimmermann, whose personal life attracted almost no attention.
Well, how much of a friendship could it be if he couldn’t be out? That was why he didn’t want to go back to Georgia, after all.
“We moved, officially, because Coach got a new job,” Eric said. “And that was true. He did get a new job, at a bigger school. But he’d been looking for a new job for two years, because I was having trouble with kids in school who thought I was gay, at least in part because of the figure skating. And I didn’t want to go through that with a whole new group of kids in a new school.
“I could have moved away, like you said, and lived with my coach, but if I stayed with the same coach, I would have been with the same kids who locked me in a storage closet overnight in seventh grade -- without my parents there to support me. And, to be honest, I couldn’t have gone much further with Katya, I don’t think. She was great, but she didn’t have the facilities, the other people I would need to be Olympic-level.”
Jack nodded. He understood how much would go into making that happen.
“And the investment my parents would need to make for me to even have a chance, to get into the pipeline … No one is guaranteed success, and I’d be coming in late, with all the politics. I just decided it was enough.
“So we moved and I started a baking vlog and joined a hockey league. And I turned out to be pretty good at hockey -- except the checking part -- and I found a college where they would work with me on that and help me get better, and where it was okay that I’m gay.”
Eric couldn’t look at Jack immediately after saying that, so he picked up a fork and took a bite of the apple pie. Jack, who hadn’t eaten while Eric was speaking, did the same.
“Holy shit, this is good,” Jack said.

Project Overview
The Subject Property
Kitchen and Fireplace Remodel Green Oaks
Thanks to Regency Home Remodeling’s expertise and connections with top suppliers, these Green Oaks homeowners saw their blah, outdated kitchen and fireplace come alive with sparkle and style in this deluxe makeover.
While keeping the basic layout of the kitchen, its use was optimized with a clever configuration of Regency’s own white shaker cabinets, while the island cabinets in gray added visual punch, aided by the new Q749 Caldera Blue Quartzite countertops from Daltile, which offer a smooth, modern complement to the Lavaliere Alluring White Mosaic backsplash. High-end appliances from Novak & Parker include a new 30” 5-burner gas slide-in convection range, and 3” Bosch 800 Series French Door refrigerator. A stylish new 30” Zephyr Venezia range hood replaces the microwave over the oven, but there’s no loss in cooking ability, thanks to the new 24” Bosch 800 Series microwave drawer conveniently located in the island. New brushed bronze cabinet hardware is matched by the new faucet and pendants, completing a kitchen that shines as well as works. And the view from the kitchen now includes an elegant, updated fireplace, set with Floor & Décor’s marble tile surrounded by a clean, modern new woodwork frame.
What’s your idea of a perfect kitchen? Book a free, no-obligation consultation with Regency Home Remodeling and see how your dreams can become a reality at a surprisingly affordable price. Ask Regency about their no-fuss policy, and get started on your kitchen today.

Mim Design, NNH Residence
Taking home the first place contemporary kitchen prize, Mim Design created a showstopping look for this open plan kitchen. As keen entertainers, the owners of the NNH residence needed a kitchen that could facilitate generous hosting, as well as function for their family, including two young boys. It needed to be robust, practical and high-end, all at once.
The kitchen orbits about the central island, which also offers a casual dining area. Timber veneer joinery and custom stainless steel hardware sit against the natural stone, resulting in a lux, yet minimal, user-friendly space.

Maker + May, Canadian Bay
It’s hard to believe that this fit-out was the first large-scale residential kitchen project of interior designer Kirstyn Lloyd from Maker + May. The brief was to deliver a space for a family with three small children, that was family-friendly without comprising on elegance.
Luxurious materials have been used throughout the space. The neutral tones of the gallery kitchen are anchored by the rich black timber joinery, complemented by the island made of Elba marble, and European oak. The Sub-Zero refrigerator is subtly integrated, cloaked by the Manasta Gray marble hood cover.. The open plan space sprawls into the living and dining area, making the kitchen the true heart of the home.

Chris Connell Design, Armadale House
This professional chef’s kitchen is a modern update to Victorian era home, designed as both a personal kitchen, and filming location for the owner. The space needed to accommodate from eggs on toast breakfasts, to film shoot days, and big sprawling dinner party evenings. The design focuses on maximizing functionality and versatility.
The room is centered on the two refrigerators which ground the space, framed by industrial stainless steel, oak cabinetry and marble countertops. Natural light floods the space through the generous skylight and windows, perfect for both long filming days!

What is a Transitional Kitchen?
Transitional is the most popular kitchen design in the National Kitchen + Bath Association’s 2019 kitchen design trends. In fact, 65% of kitchens designed in the past year were transitional, more than double the kitchens that were traditional, contemporary or farmhouse, according to Tricia Zack, Market Research Analyst at the NKBA.
Why are transitional kitchens so popular? And, perhaps more importantly, would this style fit your design aesthetic? Freshome asked Zack and John Starck, CEO and Owner of Showcase Kitchens in Manhasset, NY, to explain the features that define a transitional kitchen.

Clean and relaxed
“Transitional design offers the best of both worlds, blending the textures of traditional with the sleekness of contemporary design,” says Starck. “For kitchens, think geometric, clean and practical lines for the countertops, cabinetry, crown molding and other crafted elements.”
Starck says non-fussy is a key element of transitional kitchens. “Never would you include corbels or ornate appliques or other heavily decorative features typical of traditional kitchens,” he explains.

Colors
Since transitional kitchens often open to the living area, designers are opting for smooth features that blend in. What’s more, they often aim to achieve a light and airy effect. “Designers report using clean colors such as whites, grays, beiges, bones and blues,” Zack says. Those are good choices for now — and when homeowners decide to sell since neutral colors appeal to buyers.
Tumblr media
Cabinet drawers in abundance. Image courtesy of Showcase Kitchens.
Cabinets
In transitional kitchens, cabinets are usually a light or medium color in painted wood, wood grain or mixed materials. “Our report reveals that designers are using integrated storage with recessed panels, and doors are not as prevalent as drawers,” Zack says. Matte decorative hardware or integrated hardware are also traits of this design style.

Appliances
“White kitchens with stainless steel appliances are still king — with frequently contrasting island and perimeter cabinetry,” explains Starck. Also, expect to find fully-integrated French-door refrigerators in transitional kitchens. “Designers have told us there will either be an induction cooktop along with a wall oven and microwave, or a dual-fuel or gas range,” Zack says. Updraft hoods and standard-door dishwashers are other staples in this design.
Tumblr media

Countertops and backsplashes
“Marble countertops and even marble backsplashes work beautifully for transitional kitchens,” Starck says. Other popular features that define transitional kitchens include quartz and quartzite. “Designers say countertops are thick (1¼ inch) and are either traditional or they have waterfall edges,” Zack explains.
“Subway tile for backsplashes is still a favorite, but mosaics and glass tile in a variety of sizes work great, too,” Starck explains.

Sinks and faucets
“Popular sinks styles among designers include stainless steel single bowl or apron sinks,” Zack says.

Among faucets, brushed stainless steel finishes reign; matte, polished or satin finishes are also popular. However, there is no preference regarding faucet functionality. “Designers are selecting faucets that are motion-controlled, touch or even manual,” she says.
Tumblr media

Flooring and lighting
“The flooring can be either tile or wood, typically high gloss, but it doesn’t have to be,” says Starck. Designers are using both hardwood and engineered wood plank, continuing the debate on using hardwood floors in kitchens and bathrooms. “The various types of large-format tile used in transitional kitchens include ceramic, porcelain and stone,” Zack says. “Some designers are also using luxury vinyl.”
Designers are incorporating a variety of lighting options in transitional kitchens. “This includes recessed lights and pendants and dimmer and traditional switches,” Zack says. Undercabinet lighting and interior cabinet lighting are also features of this kitchen style. And designers are more frequently adding motion sensors and keypads.
“Lighting, seating and hardware are areas where our clients have fun,” Starck says. “Contemporary, mid-century modern, industrial, glam and even traditional elements can blend successfully into a transitional kitchen.”
