Oh I get it now. I get it. Ishmael really is the most character ever
#no fever with Moby Dick but I'm enjoying it immensely#the writing is melodic. some passages are a pleasure to read no matter what they sea#*say#funny lapsus#and it feels like an epic tale not because of the deeds of the men in it#but because of the vastness and the giants they're surrounded by#the sea and the whales#and the timelessness they give to a story that is otherwise very embedded in a specific time#the golden age of whaling did not last that long and there are a lot of things to characterise it#but you can feel the time it's set it and the time in which Ishmael is narrating and - at the same time - the near absence of time#the Pequod is existing in as a ship at sea#and the different genres it inhabits the borrowing from sacred texts and plays to be acted on a stage#the story being put on break almost tangibly to explain the anatomy of that world#451#Moby Dick
