Whatâs in a name (Haruakiâs, specifically)
Itâs 3am, the JP raws for ch101 have come out but the CN ones havenât so I canât start working on the chapter, so I have time to think about nonsense.
As you know, âAbe Haruakiâ and âAbe no Seimeiâ use the same kanji. Thatâs like, the whole thing. The fundamental gimmick of the manga.
The thing is, this tiny detail has different implications when itâs translated to another language, and makes reading the manga in Japanese, Chinese and English 3 entirely different experiences. (Besides just being 3 different languages, of course)
Japanese is unique in its use of furigana for kanji, the little text beside or above a character to tell you how itâs read, a sort of addendum, though itâs also used to add a nuance to it. For example, sometimes the kanji will be a personâs name, but the furigana would say âthat idiotâ.
(^ This is a furigana joke. In this case, æŽæ is the kanji and âscumâ is the furigana.)
This is an entirely natural and unobtrusive part of a Japanese publication, but thereâs not a real way to translate it into English entirely. (The options are entirely rephrasing what the furigana says, or to add it in brackets after the word, which stands out and ends up occupying as much space as the original word.)
Translating Japanese to Chinese is a unique language pair, especially in this case, where only the kanji is preserved and the reading of the kanji is abandoned. No matter what the furigana says, how characters are actually pronouncing his name, it is simply written and read as æŽæ (qingming). Any distinction between âAbe Haruakiâ and âAbe no Seimeiâ in the actual text itself is lost, and the only way a Chinese reader would know there ever was a difference would be if another reader left a comment explaining it. Surely, thatâs a different sort of nuance than what the Japanese text conveys.
The English translation, however, goes the opposite direction (and this is probably true for every other language thatâs not Chinese). It preserves only the pronunciation of the name, and the fact that it uses the same kanji is lost, relegated to an afterthought, a neat bit of trivia in a translation note. It erases any connection between âHaruakiâ and âSeimeiâ, leaving the surname to be the only similarity. This, surely, is yet another different sort of nuance.
The Chinese version that preserves only the kanji and erases any distinction between the two readings, the English version that emphasizes the distinction and removes the connection that the kanji provides, and the Japanese original text, the middle ground. Inevitably, Iâm sure just the way his name is presented conveys a different impression of the story and leaves readers with different understandings of it.
I have noticed this in practice too, where snarky remarks about âOh, another Abe no Seimei manga?â start at page 1 or even the synopsis for the Chinese translation (basically, as soon as his name appears), whereas the same remarks for the English version only start once Abe no Seimei is mentioned directly by name. (I donât have a personal anecdote for the Japanese version mostly because I donât know where to find these sorts of comments)
Although this has been present since the start, I feel like itâs all the more relevant in the recent chapters over the past year, where Abe no Seimei has been established as an actual character beyond being just a name thatâs brought up sometimes, and the similarities and differences between him and Haruaki called to attention and central to the story multiple times. (In chapter 101 too, which is why Iâm writing this in the first place.)
At the end of the day, this is just my perspective as someone who mainly reads the English version, fairly comfortable with Chinese and trying to learn Japanese. My takeaway of this story will inevitably be different from someone who only reads the Chinese version, and both would be different from someone who only reads the Japanese version. Actually, everyone who reads the English version probably has a different reading of the story. Iâll just never know where the tiny differences lie, and the closest I can get is by reading peopleâs written comments and opinions.
Anyway. Isnât it interesting the different nuances the way Haruakiâs name is presented can convey, whether youâre aware of it or not? (Well youâre aware of it now. The burden of knowledge)
Addendum: Something I learned from âLearning Japaneseâ videos
(Spoiler: it wasnât Japanese. God I wish it was. This shit is hard)
I wasnât aware of this until it was pointed out to me, but you probably donât read out every single English word in your head. By which I mean, you donât have to sound out every single word, otherwise reading would take way longer and this way, youâre also able to skim over long words that maybe you donât know. At the point youâre fluent enough in English to be reading rambles on obscure manga on tumblr, individual alphabets donât even register and youâre probably recognizing words by their shape. I donât know if this concept is taught for languages that use the same writing system as English (I donât have personal experience with that), but I do know Chinese is like that too, and of course, Japanese. (This ends up being relevant to Haruakiâs name I swear)
Thing is, while furigana is normal for publications, itâs not used in most other situations, like tweets and, importantly, handwritten text unless itâs REALLY significant.
Which brings us to situations in the manga where thereâs handwritten asides that mention Haruakiâs name only by kanji. The translator just has to guess, like if itâs said by one of the students itâs probably âSeimeiâ, if Haruakiâs referring to himself it would be âHaruakiâ but in situations like this where itâs an objective note and not from the POV of anyone, Iâm always unsure. (I tend to default to âHaruakiâ but the official translator usually defaults to âSeimeiâ I think)
Fact of the matter is, itâs possible sensei has a reading in mind when she writes it, but itâs just as possible she doesnât. It is text after all, where the shape of the words holds more importance than how itâs read out loud. And in situations where Abe no Seimei isnât in the picture, how Haruakiâs name is read really isnât that important in the grand scheme of things (because you know who itâs referring to, it is still important from a story perspective)
(The tweets thing also reminds me, because you canât differentiate âHaruakiâ and âSeimeiâ by kanji alone, Japanese tweets call Abe no Seimei âæŽæć

And completed both Tea Parties (Episode 2 apÄșnd Episode 2's Witch Side).
A. So Berkenstal was the protagonist of the first set of games, now aiding Battler against Beatrice because she knows his pain. Neat, maybe I'll go check out Higrashi after this.
B. There seems to be some kind of conceptual battle betwern the witches and their powers, Beatrice being 'Endless', Berkenstal being 'Miracles' and the new girl Lambdabesta being 'Certainty'.
'Certainity' beats 'Endless' because once you reach the end, it's no longer Infinity.
And 'Miracles' beat 'Certainty' because a miracle surpasses any known limit or end.
I'm not saying they represent these ideas, just that they hint at their true natures. Which confuses me- Berkenstal's ability actually surpasses them both. 'Endless' supposedly beats 'Miracles', likely under the idea that a miracle doesnt matter to endless failures. ... But that doesn't matter. A miracle would still surpass it.
There really is no reason for Beatrice to let her stay unless she didn't care all THAT much about winning. Which...yeah, sadists WANT to win
3. Battler is also in the Witches' room, he just ain't talking. Too devastated from his loss I guess. And of course, Beatrice's response is 'force feed Rosa her siblings'.
Because this bitch has never read a Greek Myth before.
4. Speaking of- the witches and even the character talk about Beatrice falling into patterns and making things overly complex, losing sight of her goal in her means.
Makes sense. She pulled the 'locked room' scenario roughly...seven times now? After a while, Battler's gonna find the chink in the armor. Especially since she suffered a humiliating defeat simply because she wanted to indulge in seeing his pain. A woman who lived for a thousand years lost to a boy who hasn't lived TWENTY. Bitch showed she could screw him over and yet he got a clean hit in regardless. And her screwing him over was clearly done as a result of her bruised ego.
She keeps pulling shit like that and she'll find herself unable to recover. I'll even bet that as the game progresses, Beatrice will start losing more conflicts even as Battler breaks, likely leading to the Answer Arc being him revisiting his lost fights and winning the rematches, all because her sadism has made her predictable.
Still, it was such a joy to hear Dread of the Grave play as she announced her 'perfect' victory. Which reminds me-
5. Beatrice has some unresolved issues with Kinzo, doesn't she? That whole bit of her following him around, trying to meet with him, showing up as he said he loved her and mentioning that no human woman would love him for that...before saying she wasn't human.
Combine that with how Battler's breakdown mirrored Kinzo's wailing, Genji's own comment that Battler is like his grandfather in his youth (i.e. when Beatrice met him), how the Character tab mentions him inheriting Kinzo's magical resistance and how her taunt of Battler rising again DIRECTLY has her compare him to Kinzo in a flattering way-
This whole game is just her working through her Kinzo issues using Battler as a substitute, isn't it?

Alrighty, it seems we're getting another room to appear twice within a single round of 1v1s. A02 is nowhere near as much of a powerhouse as TREETOP is, but to be fair, that applies to a ton of rooms in this round (making it somewhat surprising that it lost, though it did put up a real good fight against one of the biggest fan favorites in the entire game, which is quite something, no matter which way you look at it). I find it quite convenient that the repeated appearances are happening during the weekends. I know it's a coincidence, but I appreciate that I can ramble a bit less on the individual polls.
Anyways, speaking of rambling, let's talk about one of the only Saint rooms that have made it this far.
I've been generally pretty vocal about my love for a lot of the rooms within that campaign.
The inclusion of them was definitely a strange choice, as not only have they vastly increased the already enormous cast of contestants, but most of them are also basically identical to their past counterparts.
I think everyone just sort of rolled with it, and I too accepted it as a part of the pollrunner's strive for consistency. Whether or not they were fully successful in that regard is very much up for debate, but to be fully consistent in a tournament of this nature is an extraordinarily difficult task, and I think they did a damn good job there (the only somewhat eyebrow raise worthy moment was the addition of a certain Inv room, as that's certainly something that could raise a few questions, especially since a lot of regions in that campaign was renamed⊠but I'm willing to look past all that, considering that there was a public vote, and that the campaign is, y'know, a dumb shitpost xd).
Comments about the poll running aside, I did frequently support the Saint rooms, usually due to a combination of great visuals (listen, I grew up being a Tower enthusiast in Heroes of Might and Magic 3, while living in an area where it rarely snows, of course I would have a weakness for snowy industrial environments), well thought out modified spawns, and the room working really well with Saint's general gameplay.
And of course, B04 ticks out all the boxes wonderfully!
The Dropwigs that used to inhabit this place have completely disappeared by the time of the Survivor's campaign, getting replaced by Lizards. Saint actually keeps this consistency by still having them be Lizards, but instead of Greens, Caramels or Pinks, they're the Oranges that are the most well-adapted to this new ice age.
The layout and the spawns also work well for gameplay purposes, as they put up a pretty interesting sense of balance. Because sure, your tongue is incredibly powerful here, but the number of Lizards is still rather high, and they can absolutely get to you from most parts of the room, so the sense of danger is still there - especially if you're entering from, or leaving through the lower left pipe.
I have given praises towards plenty of Saint rooms where the grapple is stupidly overpowered, making it feel extremely satisfying to use, such as B06 and D01 from Icy Monument, or most of the upper rooms in Primordial Underground.
But this one is a little different from those, as there's a lot more to it, than just a simple power trip.
While power trips can feel incredible, the main source of dopamine that this game has to offer come from environments that are balanced, yet difficult, and require smart and skillful play to get through. That's the kind of experience we sought out from this game.
And B04 delivers it wonderfully.
Now, there is the question of how it all compares to the neat and tight and effective design of A02, and I'm not gonna beat around the bush here - I'm voting B04. It's hard to say if that's the objectively correct choice, but sometimes, you just see one room that simply has everything you could possibly want from a RW room, you know? Obviously, your wants will be different from the wants of everybody else. That's just how these things work. And I think that's beautiful, because it allows our art and entertainment to offer a ton of really different things, and we all get to pick and choose our favorites, be it games, stories, characters, ships, areas within games, or whatever you could think of. It just has the unfortunate side effect that a lot of my beloved Saint rooms are getting knocked out way sooner than I'd like. (Though loosing to A02 is quite fair, honestly. The reblogs on these 1v1s are very fun, and the A02 support is definitely very convincing here. Also, I did support it in its previous matchup, so there's that as well)

No More Pain | Jung Jaehyun
Pairing: Jung Jaehyun x Fem!readerÂ
Synopsis: The lingering wounds of your miscarriage have reopened. Now that you are broken up, an unforseen change in Jaehyunâs life has brought him back to your doorstep. Will he be able to fix you this time? Or will he fail just the same as before?

A/N: Probably one of the heaviest angsts Iâve written. I know the subject is rough but the idea came from a dream so I just had to write it down.
This was a different kind of pang to your heart.
Youâve had your fair share of tragedies, heartbreaks and disappointments, but thisâŠ
This feeling was nothing like anything youâve ever felt before and quite frankly, you wouldnât wish this upon your greatest enemy. Â
It was a Thursday night, one like many where you decided to stay in and recharge from a busy day at your demanding job.
You were seated on your couch with a hot cup of tea as you mindlessly scrolled through your Instagram feed. Completely wrapped in the warmth of your favorite fleece blanket. But even the thick fluffy material couldnât protect you from the cold shivers that ran down your spine.
You blankly stare at the post your best friend forwarded to you via dm and stiffened. Â
Memories of the night you miscarried 4 months into your pregnancy flood back to you as you stare at his comment.
You remembered how broken he looked when the doctor couldnât find the baby's heartbeat anymore. Â
You remembered how he held you as you cried in his arms, promising that heâd love you just the same as he tried to console you to his best ability while suffering himself.
You remembered the pain and the relief of having Jaehyun by your side through it all. Glad that even though your life was about to change forever, heâd be the one constant thing you could rely on.
You remembered all of these moments like they happened yesterday, wishing future you could mentally prepare past you for what was going to be the hardest time in your life. Â
The man who swore never to leave you did just that, and not even 6 months into his new relationship, your biggest insecurity was made into a reality. Â
He had moved on for good, and even though you have no ill feelings towards him, you canât help but feel anger over sadness right now. Â
It was that easy to replace you. And that easy for him to find someone that could give him what you couldnât.
Even though your miscarriage wasnât the direct cause of why he left, the effects of the incidence on your mental health dragged him down with you. So both of you felt itâd be better to part ways for the sake of not wanting to hate or resent each other in the end. Â
But GodâŠyou hated and resented him now more than ever. Â
It didnât matter to you that both of you started to date new people, because a part of you always held on to the fact that youâd somehow find your way back to each other, though the probability of that ever happening again turned to ash.
Your miscarriage broke you. Â
No appetite for weeks, no motivation to get yourself out of bed and no cure for the monsters in your head who told you that Jaehyun was only sticking around out of pity for your broken state.
That same insecurity is what drove him into the arms of the women he told you not to worry about, and now theyâre having a fucking child together. Â
Knowing that that shouldâve been you was a thought that was just too much to bear right now. You suddenly feel sick to your stomach, tears prickling your eyes as you rub the spot on your belly where the mini bump used to be 8 months ago.
You were finally doing better, thriving in your job and social life. Meeting new people and dating a few loose ends here and there, but you can already feel yourself spiraling back into old depressional habits as you stare at the picture once more. Â
You pettily decide to like it, hoping it would spark interest from none other than your ex, and much to your surprise, it did.
Not even 20 minutes later your phone started to buzz on the counter as you poured yourself a glass of wine. You mindlessly retrieve it, expecting it to be your best friend but when you see his name as you take a sip you almost choke.
Is he serious?
You try to come up with what to say for the next 3 to 5 minutes but nothing in your head seems to translate your exact feelings to your fingertips.
You sigh in agony while leaning over on your kitchen counter with your phone still in your hands, reading his messages over and over again. You subconsciously start to bite your lip in deep thought, getting startled by your ringtone as your phone starts to ring in your grasp.
âFuck,â you mumble to yourself, taking a big chug of the alcoholic beverage in front of you, putting on the bravest face and straightest posture to make yourself feel better before accepting the call. Â
You knew you didnât have to answer, but you were dying to hear what he had to say under these circumstances. Â
âY/N? Is that you?â His voice was unchanged. You didnât know why, but you expected him to sound different, be different. Yet the same worry heâs always had for you was evident in his tone this time as well.
You clear your throat to avoid a voice crack and sigh. âCongratulations,â you tried to sound as genuine as you could, but you knew you sounded like shit. Â
You start to play with the ends of your hair out of anxious anticipation, waiting for him to respond on the other end of the line. Â
âI meant to tell you,â he starts. âI justâŠI didnât know how and Chaeyoung suddenly uploaded the picture and-â
âJaeâŠplease spare me the details,â you interrupt him. Saying his name like you used to felt like speaking a foreign language. He stayed quiet upon hearing your voice again and let out a frustrated sigh.
âDo you still live in the same apartment in Itaewon?â he suddenly asks, immediately alerting you to stand up straight because he could only be asking for one reason and one reason only.
âY-yes.â
âGood, Iâm on my way.â
Just like that, he hung up and just like that your heart rate starts to race uncontrollably. Â
You down the remnants of your wine glass and hope heâs isnât too close because your place looked far from neat. For the next 15 minutes, you run around, shoving things into random cabinets. Whether those items belonged there or not was the least of your concern and just as you fluff the last pillow on your couch, your doorbell rings.
You take a deep breath, calming your nerves as you walk up to your front door, taking it off the lock before you open it with a dramatic swing.
There he was. Jung Jaehyun.
As beautiful and put together as he always looked, no matter the circumstance. You forget how to breathe when you lay eyes on him and gulp. Itâs actually him.
His big dark orbs widened as he laid eyes on you after months of not seeing you. His facial expression softened, slowly parting his lips to speak but you beat him to it when you broke out of your trance. Â
âWhat are you doing here?â your shoulders fall as you look into his eyes for answers. The same eyes that once looked at you with so much love and adoration, but right now his pupils were stressfully darting back and forth, trying to read you like he used to be able to but he had no idea what you were feeling right now.
âBecause I feel like shit y/n. Please let me in and let me explain,â he pleaded with a defeated tone.
You scoff, rolling your eyes. âWhat is there to explain? You knocked up your girlfriend and finally got what you wanted. Why bother coming here? To rub it into my face?â Â
Your plan of staying calm and collected went completely out the window just now and you could tell by the shock on his face that he did not expect you to be angry with him.
He took a step forward, backing you into your own hallway. His height towered over you when you stepped back and without looking back he closed the door behind him.
âY/n. I would never purposely do that to you. Ever.â You ignore his statement, narrowing your eyes at him.
âI donât remember inviting you in Jaehyun. Does she even know youâre here?â
You hold your ground, crossing your arms over your chest as you wait for him to counter your attack, but he simply shook his head. Knowing damn well that youâre acting tough just so you wonât get emotional. Â
As heâs scanning the premises, his eyes linger on the red wine bottle on your kitchen counter and with a look of utter disbelief, he averts his attention back on you.
âYouâre drinking again?â he asks with an almost condescending tone. Â
âDid you come here to practice your parenting skills because no thanks Jae, please leave,â you bite back as coldly as you could, but he wasnât having it.
âThat shit almost killed you and youâre just casually drinking again?â He runs his hand through his locks out of pure frustration, not knowing what to do with the misplaced feeling of still caring for you just the same, while also knowing he has no business to tell you how to live your life.
The truth is, Jaehyun had no idea what he was doing here. Everything about the situation felt wrong and he couldnât lie to himself any longer. Ever since Chaeyoung told him she was pregnant; he couldnât be fully happy about it. He couldnât commit to fatherhood knowing how much it broke your relationship. How much it broke the women he loved most to this day.
âA little red wine didnât hurt anyone,â you mumble under your breath and that comment alone send Jaehyunâs emotions into overdrive, unable to hide his disappointment and worry for you any longer.
âIT HURT YOU Y/N. DAMN IT!â He raised his voice at you as he roughly grabbed your arm to make you look at him, which is the last thing you expected. He wasnât mad at you. He was mad at himself. Mad at the fact that he wasnât there when you needed him most and mad at the fact that this is what your lives had come to.
You might have previously dealt with your pain by drinking, and you might have mindlessly mixed your anti-depressants with your drink once, whichâŠjust might have earned you a trip to the hospital, but that was your lowest low and you made sure itâd never happen again.
You beat your demons by yourself when he had already moved on, so he had no place to waltz back into your life when he felt like it, just to judge you.
Youâre absolutely fuming by now because of that same reason and much to your dismay you feel new tears well up in your eyes. Â
âNO, YOU HURT ME!â you yell back at him as you smack his chest, the salty droplets streaming down your face as you kept hitting his chest to make him feel your pain. âYOU LEFT ME.â
Your knees got weak and you knew you looked absolutely pathetic as you crouched down in front of him. Shock took over his features as he got down on his own knees just as quickly, pulling you into the comfort of his arms. The warmth that you used to call home and the warmth that always seemed to calm you down engulfed you completely, a feeling your favorite fleece blanket from before could hardly imitate. Â
He patted your head with assuring strokes, whispering sweet nothings to you as he held you on the floor of your apartment. Letting you sob the pain away in his black shirt. âShhh, itâs okayâŠâ he kissed the top of your head, caressing your cheek as he wiped away your tears.
You calmed down slowly, ignoring the suffocating ache in your head and heart while he made you feel safe and sound like he always did. You sat there like that for God knows how long, letting your minds go into overdrive as silence comforted the both of you. Â
Ironically enough, this scenery was the exact same as the one in the hospital 8 months ago. You cried in his arms just like this when you had lost your child, but now you were crying because you had lost him. For good now. Â
âI would never purposely plan to have a baby this quickly y/n, you have to believe me. Chae was on birth control but it justâŠhappened,â he whispers, finally breaking the agonizing silence.
You stay quiet, closing your eyes to the sound of his low voice, letting his words register. âI was going to tell you. I was planning to ask you out for a coffee but as soon as she passed her first trimester, she was just so excited and made the announcementâŠit was just bad timing.â
âAll of this is bad timing,â you mumble, which made him nod in agreement. He sighed into your hair as he continued to explain. âY/n, Iâd be lying if I said I didnât care for you anymore. I wish things were different, but they simply arenât and Iâm sorry.â
You sniff, dabbing your tears and your nose with the sleeves of your blouse before looking up at him through your lashes.
âYou donât have to apologize for moving on and being happy Jaehyun. Itâs all I ever wanted for you.â You wipe the single tear that remained on the corner of his eye, not having realized that he shed a few tears himself too.
He leaned into your touch as he looked into your eyes before closing them, leaning his forehead onto yours while taking a deep breath. Â
âI just want you to be ok.â He says suppressing a sob. âI canât live this picture-perfect life knowing that youâre in pain y/n. It makes no sense; you deserve so much more itâs not fair.â Â
Your lip starts to quiver as his words hit you, and you build up the courage to look at him again. Â
He stared at you longingly and lovingly for the first time since forever and you knew a mistake was about to be made when he inched his face closer to you, but it was too late.
His lips made contact with yours and you completely gave in. Letting him lead you into a slow yet passionate kiss that took both of your breaths away. Â Before things could get more heated, you realize what was happening and froze.
You take a hold of his wrists as you pull away, your eyes staring into his equally electrified ones as you recompose yourselves.
âI-Iâm sorry,â he started. âI shouldâve never confused you like that. Fuck. What the fuck am I doing.â He covers his mouth as he got up. Frustrated with his own behavior, he digs his fingernails into the palms of his hands to suppress the urge to swing at your door or any other object in sight for that matter.
You get up just as quickly as well. Straightening out your clothes before shaking off the nerves of what just happened. Â
You take a deep breath followed by a shaky exhale as you opened your front door, turning around on your heels to look at an equally distressed Jaehyun.
He was about to speak; about to confess that he still loved you, but you stopped him by raising your hand, motioning for him to keep whatever he was about to say to himself.
Your eyes find his own and you take one last glance at the man that was supposed to be the pillar to your family. The man you used to call yours, and the man that you had hoped to still have a future with, despite everything. Â
But you knew better.
You knew what was right and you knew what you had to do before things would start to spiral out of control again.
You stepped aside so he could pass by you, trying to avoid eye contact all while you could still feel his burning stare lingering on your fragile state.
You swallow harshly, licking your lips before you spoke as clearly and steadily as you could.
âFor the sake of your family, please leave JaeâŠand never come back.â Â

Patterns
Rating: T Words: 2,872 Warnings: Blood, Injuries, Al-An doesnât understand emotions very well. Summary: Al-An prefers when things fall into an easily recognizable pattern. Itâs how data forms, itâs easier to work with, and less surprises make it easier to remain efficient. Robin is a rogue bit of code in the set sequence.

Indeed, it had been quite some time since Al-An was allowed to exist in any dimensions outside of their temporary isolation. And truly, Robin had done well in the fabrication of an Architect form that would suit their needs to relocate the pair off the planet, and return to their home with the remedy for the Kharaa Bacterium; for the Architects of their home world.
Unfortunately, following the reconstruction of their new form, Al-An is hit with the immediate problem that their supposed mode of transportation has... degraded over time; and they are quite lacking really on the resources department. Countless amounts of bits and bobs, here and there, that simply corroded over the years, or just did not operate further. And every small tick of a list of issues added up to an inoperable phase gate. Yet Robin-- ever so helpful Robin-- offers to help collect whatever Al-an could need to repair their ship.
âAlways together, even if youâre not stuck upstairs anymore,â She had joked, tapping the side of her head in an emphasized way. How Al-An could only think of how true that statement was...
And so, life on 4546B settled into somewhat of a steady, even pace for Robin and Al-An.
Robin relocates her primary base to the facility where Al-An prepares for convenienceâs sake. She wakes up late in the morning, and Al-Anâs learned to get a cup of coffee steaming hot and settled at her nightstand at precisely 13:29. This in turn helps her wake up and become functional no later than 13:50-14:00, depending on how late she was up the previous night.
Following that, Al-An fabricates a nutritious meal of her choosing, and itâs set onto a table-- or, a section of the facility thatâs been repurposed into a table-- and she eats before she heads out for the day to find the resources needed. (And always, Al-An makes sure that thereâs a fabricated meal packed away in a thermally-controlled container for her to take along.) And like clockwork, Robin is back at 22:22 with her Seatruck stuffed to the brim with all the supplies she could find.
And usually Al-An has to check her for injuries or parasites and she just grins when they comment on how inefficient her resource-gathering is if she must hurt herself every single time. âAwww, you just like to fret over me, Al-An,â she coos as they utilize their on-hand medical devices to knit up skin from a rather nasty bite.
âI do not fret, I observe,â Al-An states plainly, and Robin rolls her eyes, only wincing a little when Al-an has to wipe over another puncture with that strange antiseptic gel, and the skin closes under the heat of that magic little tool that Robin has yet to scan. âAnd I know that humans are one of the most fragile things that get in more trouble compared to any living creature I have yet to meet.â
âIâm gonna talk that as a compliment, Al-An.â Robin flexes out her wrist once the wound is all sealed up, the only reminder a faint scar left in the wake. She flashes a grin at the Architect, who would promptly turn back to what they had been working on prior before they needed to patch her up.
At 27:00 or 28:00, Al-An ceases working for a short period-- one Robin requested so that they donât overwork themselves. Of course, an Architect cannot really do such a thing as âoverwork,â but Al-An humors her. And Robinâs meal is fabricated and settled on the table no later than 28:50. She used to always request Al-An eat dinner with her-- and although they do not eat like she does, they sit nonetheless at her side.
And Robin will scroll through her PDA and read the dayâs logs once again, chewing hear and there and really making an inefficient use of her time as she often does. But humans like to be that way-- leisurely, as Robin once corrected them-- and so Al-An will not question it again.
She always leans back against the stone of the her temporary seat, shrugging and shuffling and making a good amount of noise that could startle even the most focused Architect from their endeavors. Over time, she would unconsciously lay against Al-Anâs side, and that often settled her, so they would not comment.
If they had to admit something, the pressure therapy from her body weight was a welcome one, given they did not have the proper tools to recreate such things.
Robin turns into bed anywhere from 1:00-3:00; it will depend on what areas she visited, and what the dayâs events involved. And she will bid Al-An goodnight with a smile and pat on their arm, before she retreats to her bed. Although, she doesnât really go anywhere, because her âroomâ is just a small section of the facility adjacent to where Al-An primarily works.
Sheâs fabricated herself a bed, some storage, and even hung up some curtains to block out the steady glow of the facility. Itâs a small little space that reminds Al-An of how Architects would furnish the habitats of subjects they used for research.
Peculiar.
And this is how their pattern would fall into, resetting each day at 13:29 with the first coffee of the day. Al-An finds the repeating pattern of each day, as Robin would put it.... soothing. Did Architects even need to be soothed? Historically?
No. And yet Al-An could not help but find this... calm, inside the promise of the known. Perhaps it was a way for them to deal with the fact that they might not know what would await them on the other side of the phase gate, where they would have to face their people, and answer for their mistakes. Perhaps that reason is why they can now find solace and even comfort in something as simple as a daily pattern.
How the other Architects would be baffled at the thought. The very notion of it was so unlike them all. Al-An would have to blame Robin for this, at the very least.
Merging with her cerebral cortex must have changed something in their emotional status....
âââââââââââââââââââââââââ
And with the promise of a steady pattern, Al-An could find each day predictable enough to not impede any portion of their work. They worked quickly to repair what needed repairs, to adjust what needed adjusting, to alter what needed altering.
Steady. Steady. Steady. Repeat.
The illusion of this pattern gets shattered when 22:42 arrives one evening, and Robin is not yet home. Al-An, logistically, should be business as normal. She could have gone farther, she could have had a small set-back, she could have gotten distracted. But when 23:22 arrives, and Robin is still not home, Al-An finds they cannot work.
The data rolls in front of their vision as normal, the facility is operating at 100%, and they have spent the better part of this week weaving data in such a way that it is second-nature. But their hands do not move, their gaze is transfixed on the door, and the progress of their work is stunted.
She should be back by now. She should have been back exactly 60 minutes ago.
Al-An cannot work. They shut off their normal programs and instead set up a long-range scan. It puts them off schedule immensely, but they, for once, cannot find it in them to care about inefficiency. It takes 20 minutes for the scan to prepare, and the entire time, Al-An keeps their gaze on the door. Like Robin will burst in any second, with a couple new wounds, yes, but here, and alive.
Robin does not enter the door by the time the scan is online at 23:42.
Robin does not enter the door as the scanner searches at 23:43.
Robin does not enter the door as the scanner searches at 23:44.
Robin does not enter the door as the scanner searches at 23:45.
Robin is not home as the scanner searches at 23:46.
Robin is not home safe as the scanner searches at 23:47.

Al-An must prepare for the worst, even as they wish to leave as soon as the scanner reads her biosignature in the Arctic. No good in retrieving her if they do not have food, medical supplies, warmer clothing, an extra hair tie-- she always complained when her current one would break-- and anything else humans needed when they were potentially in distress--
No.
Robin is not in distress. The very thought has the Architect frozen to the spot, a flicker of something so unfamiliar buzzing through them. She is fine, just delayed. Off-schedule, off-pattern. No matter, Al-An will locate her and then they will both repair that.
They finish collecting everything needed into a neat pack, and just as they prepare to put the facility into lockdown, thereâs a familiar faint splashing, and then footsteps padding across a stone floor.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââ
It is 24:17 when Robin Ayou enters the Architect facility she calls home with her arm crudely wrapped in a sling and her leg leaving a trail of blood. But nonetheless, sheâs got the same grin on her face, and carries something sharp in her uninjured hand. Sheâs limping.
âAl-An!â She calls, her voice loud and full of excitement. Sheâs stumbling over her own feet, and Al-An blinks to her side to catch her with the beam of their mechanical arm, lifting her right off the ground. She doesnât notice how their posture is tight and tense, instead waving the sharp object in her hand. âAl-An I did it! I fought off one of those Shadow Leviathans and I freaking won!â
Al-An does not reply.
âIt tried to eat me, Al-An!â Robinâs arm waves wildly in her excitement, and she doesnât protest when Al-An brings her to the empty table to seat her, once again getting to work on mending what is broken. Her injured arm has several gashes in it: some down to the bone, and covered messily with plant matter. Al-An removes those and starts on sterilization.
âIt yanked me by the arm, but I was quick-- I stabbed him right in the eye, and I held on, because he was pulling me towards his mouth!â She grins wider, adrenaline masking any pain from the antiseptics, or how the beam begins to knit the skin and muscle back to one piece. âI lost my grip on my knife, but I grabbed his spine-- or whatever those glowing things on his belly are-- and I held on and kicked him right in the stomach!â
Al-An silently redirects attention to her leg, where acidic liquid had eaten through her suit and burned the skin-- not too horribly, but bloody. That is treated next.
âAnd then I must of hurt him bad, because he let me go, but not before I yanked and yanked on those spine things-- And look! I got it, I ripped one clean off!â Sheâs talking quickly, her body thrumming at the thrilling tale, and feeling so alive. âI felt bad at first, but then I remembered that he tried to eat me, so I shrugged it off, and he backed off after I ripped off this. I won, Al-An! Against a freaking Shadow Leviathan!â
Robin laughs, slapping her now healed hand against her forehead and grinning wildly. âGod, I thought for sure I was a goner when I didnât take the prawn suit down--â
âAnd why didnât you, Robin?â
They are both startled by the tone of Al-Anâs voice. And Robin finally realizes that Al-An is stiff, mechanical in how they treat her-- so different from the almost caring way they usually do. And they are glowing a sickly yellow color, their gaze transfixed on her wounds as the mechanical arm fixes up the burns on her leg.
âI-I.....â Robin is at a loss, her eyes now locked onto them. âI.... donât know.â
An uncomfortable silence falls between them. Al-An finishes up work on her leg, and then does a general scan over her to make sure they didnât miss any other wounds. Processing, methodical, even.
Something is wrong, Robin thinks. Even now, as they seem to pull away from the situation, the same sickly color tinges the edge of her vision. Robin catches their arm as they turn to assess her findings, and she doesnât miss how they tense.
âAl-An....â She begins, but stops. She canât find the right thing to say. It all feels wrong. Like anything she says next wonât be the right thing to say. But she tries with, âAre you okay?â
âThat is hardly a question you should ask me, Robin.â Al-Anâs voice has gone back to the same, even tone as when they first met, but itâs all off. Too even, too tight. Like there is something beneath the surface, just hiding and waiting to strike like an Ice Worm. âYou should ask yourself that. You were the one who was injured. Sustaining traumatic injuries is detrimental to the overall health of--â
âDid I scare you?â She asks, and Al-An falters.
âFear is not a concept we feel,â They state, and yet they now feel the sinking familiarity of it nonetheless. Fear. They were afraid, they had been afraid when Robin was not home at the right time. They were scared when Robin returned injured. They were scared when she recounted her harrowing tale, and they were scared that sheâs going to do it again and they would not be there to pick up the pieces--
âAl-An...â Robinâs voice cuts through the swirling data inside their head, and her eyes are soft as she reaches and touches their chest gently. She feels.... awful. Physically and emotionally. How could she not realize that they were upset? How could she have been so blind when sheâs normally so in tune with the Architect? âAl-An, Iâm really sorry.â
âYou have done nothing that warrants an apology,â Al-An states; but their lights flicker pink for the briefest moment. âYou were simply acting inefficiently and radically in a way that could have resulted in several versions of a potential death, which is not uncommon for your species.â
Robin smiles. That unintentional insult was 100% all Al-An. She shifts closer to them, and then her arms wrap around them, and she leans her head against their chest, and she imagines she can hear their heartbeat through their thick, armored body. âI know, I was being an idiot. Iâm sorry.â
âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm hugging you, Al-An. Never had a hug before?â
âArchitects do not partake in this sort of behavior,â Al-an tells her. But, nonetheless, they mimic her movements, and their organic arms encircle her smaller frame, and having her close to them like so reminds them just of how tiny and delicate she is. â....Touching one another was not commonplace.â
âThen Iâm gonna make it commonplace, and Iâm gonna give you a hug everyday until I catch up on the hugs youâve missed out on your whole life,â Robin hums as she closes her eyes, yawning.
âThat would be impossible, given the length of your human lifespan,â Al-An corrects her, but they find the idea of one of these each day not entirely unpleasant. Robin laughs, and she just smiles. And their lights shift to a light pink as she falls asleep against them, and they return her to her bed: asleep too early for the schedule.
But it was alright to be a little off-pattern.

And so, life on 4546B settled into somewhat of a general routine for Robin and Al-An.
Al-An has her coffee ready at 13:29 and she drinks it as she wakes up and rolls out of bed by 14:00. Al-An fabricates breakfast, packs her a lunch, and sheâs out the door for the dayâs work. And if she returns at 21:57 or 23:37, Al-An is not worried. After all, sheâs returning with less injuries, and that is good enough for them.
Together they sit when Robin has her dinner and Al-An has their break around 28:42, and Robin reads aloud her PDA entries to Al-An-- even though they could easily scan and upload the documents themself, it makes her feel happy, so they indulge. And Robin leans back against Al-An without hesitation once sheâs done eating, and they find the pressure nice.
And when 1:00 or 2:00 rolls around, just before she turns in for bed, Robin will throw her arms around Al-An for their daily hug, and she will hold on tight for a good few minutes, and Al-An learns to hold her in return. Perhaps if they held long enough, tight enough, she would never be in danger again.
And they find that perhaps, maybe... they like hugs.
And Robin fashions the Leviathan fragment into a necklace, that she gifts Al-An.
And Al-An wears it everyday.

Van Zieks - the Examination, part 11
Warnings: SPOILERS for The Great Ace Attorney: Chronicles. Additional warning for racist sentiments uttered by fictional characters (and screencaps to show these sentiments).
Disclaimer: (see Part 1 for the more detailed disclaimer.) - These posts are not meant to be taken as fact. Everything Iâm outlining stems from my own views and experiences. Please do not come into these posts expecting me to either defend Barok van Zieks from haters, nor expecting me to encourage the hatred. - Iâm using the Western release of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for these posts, but may refer to the original Japanese dialogue of Dai Gyakuten Saiban if needed to compare whatâs said. This also means Iâm using the localized names and localized romanization of the names to stay consistent. -It doesnât matter one bit to me whether you like Barok van Zieks or dislike him. Episode 2-5: The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo, part 2
This is the first time in a while that I actually want to try other options to see what happens. The 'accusation' leads to some witty banter with a frustrated Stronghart, but 'report' is one that gets a reaction from Van Zieks himself. Ryu theorizes that 'since Klint was a well-bred and fastidious man, and knowing the end was near, he might have wanted to tie up some loose ends in all of his outstanding business'. Van Zieks immediately replies that his brother had no outstanding business.
DID I JUST GET PENALIZED BY THE DEFENDANT??? Just for implying his brother might've had some loose ends to tie up? Van Zieks really hates it when people show his brother even the slightest bit of disrespect, huh? Well, it's about to get a whole lot worse. Let's go for the confession option! Van Zieks definitely doesn't take kindly to this one.
âWhat are you saying? Do you even realise?! A confession...about the true identity of the Professor... That, that would mean...â
He fumbled his speech, there. We've never heard him do that before. And he's gone back to that bobbing, unsteady animation halfway into the above dialogue. Ryu insists it's the only explanation that fits. The man who murdered those members of the aristocracy wasn't Genshin Asogi at all, it was the one believed to be the fifth victim, Klint van Zieks himself.
Welp. We broke him. Stronghart remarks that Pandora's box has opened at last, making it clear he already knew what we just revealed. The gallery is outraged.
We've gone from well-bred to thoroughbred, have we? Susato feels very bad for Van Zieks, but Ryu asks himself whether such a brilliant prosecutor never suspected âwhat his older brother really wasâ. To clear up doubt further, he asks whether Klint Van Zieks owned a dog. Barok doesn't intend to dodge the facts of the situation, it seems.
Not what the concept art says, but it's possible Klint owned a different, smaller dog before Balmung. Van Zieks talks about how loyal the dog was and how it wore a jewel-studded collar which was stolen from the house âsome years ago nowâ. This implies it was less than ten years ago, and must've been kept in the house as a keepsake even after Balmung passed away. Ryu and Susato bring up that they've seen such a collar; it was Selden's loot in case 2-2. They note the fancy B emblem on it, and this is the first time we find out that Klint van Zieks was a married man. His widow's maiden name was Baskerville. It's a little odd to me that for someone who thought so highly of his brother, Van Zieks never mentioned his sister in law before now. Conveniently, it never came up for the sake of a twist, I suppose. Either way, the emblem confirms the collar they saw was Balmung's. Ryu notes there was a considerable amount of blood on the collar (nobody washed this thing?) and while it could've come from typical hunting trips, it could just as well have been human blood. With that, the gallery begins to lean towards the truth that Klint van Zieks really was the Professor himself. Stronghart seems to have realized there's no way out of this now and announces that 'they may have the truth'.
Here comes that 'true nature' thing again, just worded a bit differently. Van Zieks doesn't intend to shirk away from it, though. He's open to the insinuation that his brother was, in truth, something truly horrible. Stronghart explains that Klint attempted to fight the growing darkness in London, only to end up being consumed by it. He also admits that after the fourth victim fell, Genshin showed up at his office, putting forth the accusation that Klint was the Professor. He didn't have any evidence and needed a warrant to get some, but Stronghart refused to anger the aristocracy based on the accusation of a visiting student, so he sent Genshin away. As a result, the man headed over to the Van Zieks mansion and Klint perished. Stronghart continues to admit that he was responsible for pinning the Professor's crimes on Genshin, right down to ordering Gregson to fabricate evidence. Sure enough, the late inspector's earlier claims ring true: it seems he did genuinely believe Genshin to be the killer, but was reluctant to falsify anything until Stronghart strong-armed him into it. The jailbreak agreement was also part of Stronghart's plan; he manipulated Genshin into agreeing by proverbially dangling his 14 year old son in front of him. Van Zieks brings up one more point: that Stronghart was the mastermind behind the Reaper organization. Not only does he admit to it, he calls it a âbrilliant ideaâ and even takes credit for how his âminionsâ worked tirelessly to ensure Van Zieks was never accused of being the Reaper himself. What a smarmy bumhole. He insists it was all for the preservation of law and order across the empire, and the gallery is actually suckered into falling for this ploy. It seems as if he's going to get away with his masterminding without decent consequences. Kazuma now has one more question for Van Zieks, and it's the exact one Ryu asked himself earlier; did he never have any doubts about his brother?
âMy brother's sense of justice was extremely strong. Perhaps...too strong, I observed. [âŠ] During the time of the Professor killings, my brother did not appear to be himself. But it was only once. Not more. Klint wasn't the culprit. That was my conclusion at the time. And I still believe that now. [âŠ] The third victim...was the Lord Chief Justice at the time. It was he who had recognized my brother's potential and trained him as a prosecutor. No matter what the circumstances, it's unthinkable that my brother could have killed his friend and mentor!â
So here, we learn that Klint wasn't an infallible paragon of virtue in his brother's eyes. Simply by saying that his sense of justice was âperhaps too strongâ, a flaw is being brought to light. Younger Barok saw that Klint's need to ensure justice was overpowering him, and he also saw that during the time of the killings, something was off about his behavior. Enough to have the younger Van Zieks consider, for a brief time, that perhaps the Professor was him. However, the death of the third victim was like a lifeline to him, a flotation device keep him from going under- or perhaps more like a straw to grasp. It offered a sort of justification to him; a firm belief that Klint would never kill his own mentor and therefore he couldn't possibly be the Professor, and Barok was wrong to ever doubt him. However, it was just a very meager excuse to put his suspicions at ease and blind him to the truth. There are, after all, plenty of reasons why Klint would kill that Lord Chief Justice if indeed he were the Professor.
So Stronghart now tries to wrap everything up with a neat little bow, saying that's all the truth they'll be able to get from this trial and he'll present himself at the Ministry of Justice for whatever sanctions are deemed necessary. Since he's the Lord Chief Justice, I can't imagine the Ministry of Justice will give him more than a slap on the wrist. However, he says just a bit too much in his closing statement and Ryu jumps on that immediately. A third page of Genshin's will was hidden from everyone! Turns out, it was a personal message to Kazuma that they never bothered to send to Japan. Governor Caidin conveniently brought it with him and the contents are read aloud after some pressuring. With this last secret message left behind by Genshin, Ryu manages to find Klint's last will and testament hidden inside the Asogi clan's sword. GASP.
Oblivious to the shenanigans playing out in the Court Record section of the game, Stronghart once again tries to end the trial and even goes so far as to say Klint was basically insane when he took his mentor's life (to which Van Zieks objects fiercely). Ryu interjects, saying he has one more piece of evidence to present. When Stronghart calls the very notion absurd, Van Zieks once again raises an objection, pointing out that âthis gentleman has an uncanny habit of producing evidence at the final hour that had escaped everyone else's attention.â Which, y'know, is true. That's how Ace Attorney works. I do want to draw attention to the fact that he said âthis gentlemanâ as opposed to âthis Nipponeseâ or even something like âthis barristerâ. He considers Ryu a gentleman now! So with that, Ryu has the opportunity to shove Klint's will in everyone's face and things escalate very quickly.
Ooh, his speech faltered again. He is shook! And it gets even better when he gets a closer look at the document.
Stronghart panics and demands Ryu hands the document over to him at once. When that fails, he even tries to forcibly adjourn the trial and get everyone to clear the courtroom. If that isn't suspicious, we don't know what is. It sure is satisfying to watch him squirm. Naturally, he can't actually put an end to the trial now- not with so many people watching, so the document is read aloud. It's revealed that Genshin challenged Klint to a duel, so that he might âdepart this world with honorâ. Klint goes on to write that he finds himself undeserving of this honor and that âthe Japanese are a truly merciful peopleâ. So here, already, we get the final nail in the coffin for Van Zieks's entire motivation for racial prejudice and for hating Genshin in particular. Klint never thought ill of Genshin, not even in his final moments. If anything, he was grateful for being put out of his misery and being allowed to 'depart the world with honor'. Genshin's actions were not betrayal; not ever. They were merciful. (COOL MOTIVE, STILL MURDER.) What we also learn is that while Klint did indeed take the life of the first victim on his own accord, he was then immediately identified as the culprit and blackmailed into the next three killings by someone else. You guessed it, it was Stronghart! Despite his earlier panic, he now has a myriad of justification ready, talking about how sacrifices have to be made for the sake of justice and whatnot. He also explains that he was the one who pressured Jigoku into shooting Genshin in the graveyard when Drebber showed up there. He acts like Jigoku is the only one to blame, but considering Stronghart was basically screaming in Jigoku's ear, I wouldn't be surprised if this poor man pulled the trigger by accident simply because he was startled by the shouting. Stronghart was the one who decided that Genshin needed to die and forced Jigoku to act, so Stronghart is the one ultimately responsible. Naturally, Ryu and Kazuma both attempt to argue Stronghart's justifications into the ground. At one point, Stronghart plays the victim card and asks them to acknowledge his 'struggle', but Kazuma insists that this jerk has done nothing and:
WELL. Okay. Looks like we've finally convinced Kazuma that Van Zieks is a victim in this whole ordeal, as well as someone who 'acts justly'. That's a wonderful way forward. With all this out in the open, though, Stronghart offers a literal round of applause. It's true; he's âdone nothingâ and âmerely been surrounded by fools who've acted very rashly indeedâ, which means he can't be charged with any crimes. We can't even prove he threatened anyone into doing his bidding, as he says it might as well have been âbargainingâ. Thing is, bargaining with someone to end a third party's life is known as âcontract killingâ and is, in fact, illegal. I can't find any sources to verify whether it was already illegal in 1900 England, but I can only assume so, or people would've gotten away with murders very easily. I guess the bottom line here is that we can't prove Stronghart really did extort or pay anyone to take a life, since there's no material evidence for that sort of thing, nor anyone who can testify on it. Stronghart claims that the minutes of the trial will be heavily redacted to remove matters not related to Gregson's death, in the interest of preserving law and order, as well as to protect the queen. The gallery has now turned against us as well, chanting Stronghart's name.
Here we have a singular opportunity to deviate into the closest thing to a bad ending this game series has. Anyone who remembers the iconic 'the miracle never happen' ending in AA2, or even the bad endings in AA5 where either Trucy or Athena is implied to be killed by Aura, will be sorely disappointed by this one. First, to compare... In the standard ending, no matter how far along you've gotten in the trial- including proving that Stronghart was the Reaper- Van Zieks will still be found guilty. Stronghart will utter the words that he âwould like to think however misguided, [Van Zieks] acted out of a sense of justice nonethelessâ, and then pronounces the poor man guilty of crimes we've already proven were never committed by him. Now, in this slightly different ending, if you run out of all your penalty points because you fail to present Harely, the dialogue is tweaked. Stronghart declares that for the sake of justice, âthe only correct course of action has been unanimously acknowledged by the clear majority here present. All mention of that which has been discussed in this courtroom today will be struck from the records. Barok van Zieks â Or should I say, Reaper of the Bailey... The heinous crimes committed by your brother, Klint van Zieks, will be lost in obscurity, this time forever. May you also find peace now as you join your sibling in the eternal darkness.â
And then, just as in the standard ending, Van Zieks is pronounced guilty and the doors slam shut. So effectively, the only real difference here is that Stronghart really rubs it in our faces that Van Zieks is taking the fall as the Reaper in the eyes of the public. He knows Van Zieks isn't the Reaper- everyone present in the courtroom knows it. However, since the entirely gallery is siding with the real mastermind, the minutes of the trial will be confiscated and destroyed so that the truth will be lost forever. Neither Kazuma nor Ryu reacts to this turn of events on-screen, which is a shame. Van Zieks doesn't fight the adjudication either, he simply accepts the verdict in silence- Hang on, where have we heard that before? Genshin? And didn't Van Zieks say that so long as his death served a purpose, he wouldn't mind dying over being called the Reaper? Stronghart certainly seems to feel that Van Zieks ought to be thrown under the omnibus and sent to the gallows for the sake of minimizing crime in London.
But we're not going to let the true antagonist of this game get away with his bullshit! Time to pull Harely's ears! Cue another (S)Holmeus Ex-Machina where it turns out the entire secret trial has been livestreamed to the Queen of England through holograms. By royal decree, Stronghart is stripped of his title and will be prosecuted for his crimes at a later time. FINAL BOSS, DEFEATED.
With Stronghart out of the way, Van Zieks has some closing sentiments to offer.
âIs that my brother left this world without a word to me.â
I can see why that might bug him. Van Zieks always looked up to his brother and shielded him from disrespect even a decade after his death, but Klint in turn didn't seem to want to leave any parting sentiments for him, not even a simple farewell. That's not the case, though! Susato points out there's actually more to Klint's will than was read aloud, so let's hear it now.
âBarok, you have always looked up to me, and now, you follow in my footsteps to become a prosecutor. It is my fervent wish that my unspeakable deeds should not hinder your advancement. I ask not for understanding, for none could understand my depravity. I ask only for forgiveness. Asogi is a fine detective, and a hunter worthy of respect. He has agreed to honour my final two wishes. The first is that this document survives. The second... I cannot commit to paper. I have confessed my sins to my wife. May she find resolution in my death. With my eternal gratitude to my Japanese friend, I rest my quill.â
Imagine how different things would've ended if the will had found its way to Van Zieks shortly after Klint's death. It would've prevented so much grief and so much prejudice, because if Van Zieks had learned that Klint still regarded Genshin with so much respect and gratitude even in this situation, he would never have blamed him for Klint's death nor considered it too great a betrayal. Everything that happened was in line with Klint's wishes. As it stands now, the words in Klint's will basically serve to scold Van Zieks for his attitude and hatred these past ten years.
Yep, there we go. The final straw. He's been truly, utterly embarrassed and made to confront his mistakes. When Stronghart explains how his ambition to become Attorney General is what prompted him to silence people like Watson and Gregson. Van Zieks asks him whether he ever bothered to count the number of brilliant people he had killed. Kind of a questionable remark, since Stronghart mostly had criminals killed. We don't even know for sure whether Watson was a good person or not; he comes across as a cowardly skeeve. I guess Van Zieks is mostly talking about Genshin, but even that is... Uh...
I received an Ask a while back, bringing up the matter that Genshin appears to be exonerated of any wrongdoing when the truth of Klint's death is revealed. That despite duels being outlawed and it being literal murder, Kazuma seems to take this truth as his father's name being cleared. Indeed, going over everything we've learned so far, it feels as if the narrative has set up both Klint and Genshin, and even characters like Jigoku and Gregson, as victims of Stronghart's manipulation. The thing is, though... Both Genshin and Klint took at least one life of their own free will, Jigoku pulled a trigger twice for the sake of his own career (and recruited someone into an assassin plot), Gregson conspired with a notorious assassin to commit over a dozen murders just because his boss told him it was the right thing to do... Feeling bad about murder or resorting to it because 'the other person is even worse and needs to be stopped' doesn't change that it's murder. It doesn't seem as if Kazuma or anyone else outright says their loved ones are absolved of any responsibility/their names are cleared, but it does really come across as if the narrative wants you to forgive them. So uh... Yes. This is something the game should have properly addressed, instead of just going 'oh, these poor people, all used as puppets by the final boss'.
Anyway, (S)Holmes takes the time to remind Van Zieks that he's the defendant in this case, not the prosecutor. Our old friend Santa Judge returns for the adjudication! Turns out, he was in the gallery all along. (Was he chanting Stronghart's name too?) He talks about how the darkness of the past ten years has lifted, in part thanks to a bright young star from the East. Awww, we've completely won over the judge! Van Zieks now also has something to add.
âI had the faintest of intimations. That if British justice, so warped and twisted over its long history, was finally to know change... This might just be the man to do it. But at the time, I wouldn't allow myself to acknowledge the possibility. I couldn't overcome my hatred of the Japanese, after the circumstances of my brother's death. Mr. Naruhodo...â
He takes a flourishing bow here, an acknowledgment that Ryu is worthy of his respect and perhaps even that Ryu is superior to him, then stands up straight again for the final whammy.
Ryu is shocked and Susato is brought to tears. We did it, y'all. We've secured the full, heartfelt apology. I'm not sure there's really anything to add to this, nor anything we could want from it at this point in time. Ryu doesn't say he forgives Van Zieks for his discourtesies, but considering how hard he worked to get this guy cleared of murder, that would feel kind of out of place. The forgiveness happened long before Van Zieks apologized, or so is the implication. (Is that the correct narrative path? Not at all, but I'll get back to that in the conclusion.) So after some more closing words from Ryu, Van Zieks gets his not-guilty verdict and court is adjourned.
In the defendant's lobby, Ryu feels a bit conflicted about how this whole thing went down. Susato tries to cheer him up by saying that everything will seem much better once he sees Van Zieks's smiling face. Indeed, in most other Ace Attorney games, this would be the point where at last, an emotionally distant defendant/witness drops their walls and allows themselves to smile (or cry). Just think of Gina, Lana Skye or even Athena Cykes when she cries tears of joy during AA5's ending. Hilariously enough, Van Zieks is not one of those characters.
This is a really fun subversion of expectations and Ace Attorney tropes. And I still believe his face got frozen like that. Even so, he's got something heartfelt to say.
âFor you to have risen to the level of excellence you demonstrated today... Well, it's quite remarkable.â
Sounds like a hatchet job of a compliment at first glance, but the sentiment is there. It is extremely remarkable for a foreign exchange student who's only been in the country for about 9 months- and who only spent like 2 of those as an active lawyer- to rise to such a level that he not only uncovers the truth of the current case, but of a cold case from 10 years prior, which was part of a huge cover-up. Ryu points out that he exposed a most 'unpalatable truth' in court and that he feels as if he robbed Van Zieks of something precious. Van Zieks doesn't seem to agree. He reminisces on Stronghart's words.
âBut that... That was just the feeble excuse of a coward. Only those with a steadfast eye for the truth have what it takes to fight the dark forces of crime. You made fine work of establishing that fact in court today.â
So once again, he's complimenting Ryu's courtroom performance. Not only that, but he's acknowledging (in different words) the earlier sentiment that the truth needs to come out, no matter how painful. Perhaps, indirectly, he's calling himself a feeble coward as well. Ryu and Susato are proud of Van Zieks's growth, with Susato saying that surely Kazuma would be smiling if he were here. Naturally, when he shows up at that very second, he isn't smiling at all. Like mentor, like disciple! Kazuma takes a polite bow before Van Zieks and congratulates him on his acquittal. Naturally, after watching Kazuma prosecute so ferociously for two whole episodes, that doesn't feel sincere. Van Zieks asks him whether he doesn't instead want to curse him. Kazuma apologizes for his earlier behavior, which does feel 100% sincere.
âYour father, Genshin... If I had been stronger, then perhaps... I made an unforgivable error of judgment. ⊠I can offer no excuse.â
One more apology to add to the pile! And here we once again reach that question of whether the narrative is acting like Genshin should be absolved of all blame. In a technical sense, Van Zieks wasn't wrong to prosecute Genshin, since he did seriously murder Klint. That alone is already warranting of the death penalty, so the added crimes of the Professor on top of that don't change too much. However, I don't think Van Zieks's lines truly relate to the Professor trial itself. The error of judgment, in my eyes, can also be seen as the blind acceptance that Genshin betrayed him (as well as Klint) when there was actually far more at play. This notion that Genshin was a horrid traitor who abused their trust and hospitality was then allowed to grow into an irrational hatred which festered for a decade. Regardless of whether Genshin killed Klint, the insistence that the man's true nature was that of a monster was wrong, and I think that's what he's apologizing for. To be clear, he's not apologizing for racist sentiments uttered towards Kazuma or anyone else from Japan with these lines. This purely relates to his treatment of Genshin. However, he already apologized for his many discourtesies back in the courtroom and I think the racist outbursts were part of those discourtesies.
Kazuma says he can offer no forgiveness, which is totally fair. Kazuma isn't obligated to forgive this man. He does, however, admit that he has respect for Van Zieks, since he âfought for justice and the truthâ.
Awww! Remember how in my very first 'strong thought about Barok' post, I pointed out that Barok almost appears to have been designed to be Kazuma's rival prosecutor instead of Ryu's? Yeah. Here we see it very clearly. The reconciliation conversation between these two feels like a much better resolution than the conversation between Van Zieks and Ryu.
So now Kazuma brings up that Genshin promised to do two things for Klint, but the second wasn't mentioned in the will. Mikotoba shows up to share a very heartbreaking tale about Klint's unnamed widow, the lady Zieks-Baskerville, who was hiding out in Dartmoor and passed away from childbirth very shortly after Genshin was executed. The newborn baby girl survived, though! Van Zieks blurts out that that makes no sense. âWhy on Earth wouldn't Klint have entrusted the child to my care in that case?!â And that alone is already kind of tragic, but what really packs a wallop is this:
This means Klint and his wife deliberately kept the pregnancy from him. It's never explained why. Genshin showed up at the manor in the spur of the moment and Klint died that very same night, when his wife must've already been around 8 or 9 months pregnant. (she gives birth about a week or two later, after all.) Klint says that he 'confessed his sins to his wife', but that also must've been very recent, if not that very same night, since Stronghart was threatening to tell Klint's wife and brother of his misdeeds. Stronghart's hold on Klint would've weakened if he'd told her the truth months ago, which in turn implies the both of them decided not to tell Barok while she herself was still oblivious to the Professor truth. Honestly, it all feels like a vague plotconvenience.
What is explained is why the newborn baby wasn't entrusted to Van Zieks. It isn't because Klint had the amazing foresight to know his younger brother would become a salty, loner alcoholic; it's because he and his wife feared the truth of the Professor might come out. Heck, if Genshin had never been arrested for Klint's death, perhaps it would've come out for certain. âThe girl would be forever branded as the daughter of the infamous mass murderer.â So the baby girl was distanced from the Van Zieks family as much as possible, with all of London unaware of her existence. This girl is, of course, Iris.
Right on cue, the Harely plushie activates to receive a call from (S)Holmes and Iris. She invites everyone over to 221B for a feast and makes sure to invite âMr. Reaperâ too. He very awkwardly declines the offer.
Humanization? Humanization! He does, however, give Iris his word that he'll present himself at 221B in the near future to express his gratitude. I think a big part of why he declined the offer was because he wouldn't feel at home during the big celebration when a whole group of people is there. He'd much rather visit Iris during a more quiet, private moment and that's sweet too. Plus, I don't think he's in the mood for a celebration, considering all the horrible truths he's learned in a single day.
So now Kazuma prepares to leave and asks Van Zieks to accompany him. The wording of âwould you care to-â makes it very clear this isn't a demand, it's a very soft request that Van Zieks is free to decline. Not that he hesitates for even a second. Here's some more parting words.
âI believe... You saved my life.â
He takes a deep, flourishing bow and honestly I've lost track of how many times he's praised/thanked Ryu by now. More than Edgeworth thanked Phoenix, most likely. The prosecutor duo prepares to walk away, but Ryu calls after Van Zieks, asking him to wait. Which he does. Ryu asks him what he intends to do now.
... âProsecutor van Zieks chooses deathâ??? In a way, he's thinking of pulling a similar move. He intends to publicize the full truth of the Professor, and I can only imagine that includes Stronghart's involvement in what went down 10 years ago. Maybe he'll even share the truth of the Reaper who's haunted the courtroom all these years. He believes that âonce that's done, the Van Zieks family will be ostracised completely from London society.â (I don't think he means living family members, but rather, the legacy of the Van Zieks name and the rights associated with it.) So because of that, he intends to leave the capital as soon as he's free of his employment. Considering how easily this man took a five year sabbatical and adding in the fact that the Lord Chief Justice just got arrested, I expect his resignation could be as easy as packing his desk and leaving his office without saying a word. Kazuma, however, calls him a fool and a coward. He basically dares Van Zieks to keep going now that he's finally freed from the pseudonym of the Reaper. Van Zieks neither agrees with the sentiment nor shoots it down, instead saying it's unexpected to hear those words from Kazuma of all people. With that out in the open, they leave for realsies.
Just as Van Zieks doesn't attend the Baker Street party, he isn't there when Ryu's at the docks to return to Japan. I like to think Kazuma did bother to tell Van Zieks that Ryu is leaving the country, because withholding that information seems like a bit of a jerk move, but... Well. Not showing up at the docks to say some final farewells is even more of a jerk move on Van Zieks's part. Though it's possible he felt he wasn't wanted there, and may eventually ask for Ryu's address so he can write a letter (which is far less imposing than invading a heartfelt farewell with a scowling face). It's a shame, though. I would've liked to hear his thoughts on Ryu's departure.
We learn that Kazuma will âstay in Lord van Zieks's tutelage for the time beingâ to become a full-fledged prosecutor. Which is fine, I guess. It doesn't matter whether he's a defense attorney or a prosecutor; all that matters is the pursuit of the truth. What catches my interest is that even with all that bad blood and refusal to forgive Van Zieks, Kazuma still agrees to keep studying as his disciple. This implies to me that he sincerely doesn't believe Van Zieks to be a bad person anymore, and acknowledges he can learn a lot from this man. Which is not the same thing as being on friendly terms with him, but at the very least he's giving Van Zieks the benefit of the doubt when it comes to improving their... Well, their dynamic, I suppose I should call it.
On to the credits scenes we go! This time, Van Zieks legit does get a scene of his own, but before we address this one, I want to skip ahead real quick to Albert Harebrayne's scene.
âHe sent me a very nice letter saying he'd like to show me around now that everything was settled. B-But what have I done? I was so excited, I picked this splendid hotel and now I can't afford the bill! Oh Barok! Come to my rescue again, please! I, I wish I could just vanish into thin air sometimes!â
Several things of note can be taken out of this little scene. First of all, with the Reaper nonsense behind them, Van Zieks seems to have wasted very little time with asking his best buddy to return to London for that sightseeing that was promised. Presumably, he even paid for the trip (again), since Albert still seems to be very low on money. This, coupled with the fact that Van Zieks was reading that letter with quite a bit of dedication in his jail cell, indicates to me that he's longing for the good old days, when he could smile and have friends. He's trying to return to a sense of normalcy and since Albert is still considered his closest friend, it makes sense he'd reach out to him instead of a relative stranger like Kazuma. Baby steps. Now, the fact that Albert says âcome to my rescue againâ sets the very clear tone that this guy believes Van Zieks has helped him before- during the trial, of course. It's another reinforcement of the notion that Albert is thankful Van Zieks chose the role of prosecutor in order to defend the teleportation theory, even if it meant that he himself would be branded a murderer. Despite his gruff exterior and blunt words, Albert thinks of Van Zieks as a sort of knight in shining armor who will come save him. ⊠With cold hard cash, in this case, but it's the gesture that counts. Van Zieks might allow Albert to stay in his mansion instead, but it depends how high the risk of assassination is at this point in time. People are probably hating on the Van Zieks family now that the truth of the Professor is out.
On to credits scene of Van Zieks himself! We have confirmation by now that he hasn't retired as a prosecutor, since Kazuma already expressed his intent to keep studying under him. So we see Van Zieks in his office, addressing Klint's painting.
âIn those days, when I was known as the Reaper, I felt your presence at my side. Once, unable to bear the burden of that grim pseudonym, I even retired from the courtroom. Despite everything, I still wear your prosecutor's badge with pride. But the darkness that beset me is no more. As you, too... Are no more.â
The first two sentences of this bit feel very disjointed and barely related to me, so I had a quick look at some fan translations. First is the sub translation on Youtube: âI could feel you standing by my side through the days in which I was called the Reaper. Yet there were times I could not bear the burden of that name, and left the courtroom far behind me.â The âyetâ is very crucial, since it makes the insinuation that feeling his brother's presence was very important to Van Zieks, but the burden became so overwhelming that he retired anyway. Taisa the Gamer's script doesn't have a âyetâ in it, nor any equivalent, but the sentence structure still flows well enough not to cast doubt on how he felt about Klint's supposed presence. Contrasting that, the localization's wording with âevenâ almost makes it seem like feeling Klint's presence was a negative thing- that he was overwhelmed by it and that this was the burden associated with the Reaper name, as opposed to the killings. Which can't possibly be right; he already admitted to us that the idea of his brother's ghost helping him was one of the main reasons he kept on being the Reaper. So long story short, the localization's take on these first two lines is a little off.
The prosecutor's badge thing, however, is spot on. Despite everything- despite the 'true nature' of Klint now exposed, Van Zieks still wears the badge with pride. We know the badge is symbolical, of course. He still believes in Klint's sense of justice and he's still going to openly admit to being Klint's brother- to being a Van Zieks. That's sweet. He goes on to say that the darkness within him is no more. To really grasp what that means, let's go back to the end of case 2-3 for a second. There, Van Zieks says that after his brother's death, he found himself in âa very dark place indeedâ. In case 2-4, he mentions that he refuses to trust others to protect himself against betrayal, but has now sunk into a proverbial mire which makes it impossible to breathe. All of that is the same darkness he's referring to now, I'm sure. I don't believe depression can lift this easily; there's no way that darkness is no more. However, I think what he means to say is that it no longer has such a strong hold on him that it manifests in paranoia and irrational hatred. He has a chance now to start fresh and that's what he intends to do. He's striding away from that darkness, towards a brighter future. In order for a person to change for the better, they themselves have to want to change, and it looks like Van Zieks is all for that. Which at last brings us to the conclusion of this essay series! The conclusion, which looks back on the original query posed in Part 1, will once again include a load of screencaps. To keep the post size lighter, I'm going to put it in a separate post. I hope you'll look forward to it!

Part 1 - Basic Concepts of Miraculous Ladybug: Miraculous Jewels
Alright! I promised you meta and now I deliver!
I feel like people mostly watch Miraculous for the romance these days. Shipping is all everyone cares about. I wonder why? Probably because writers themselves don't take their worldbuilding very seriously and because they don't put much effort into making the audience care about something other than Love Square, like the mythology behind the Miraculous, or motivations of the main villain, or some pretty heavy topics for a kid's show that they bring up and then refuse to touch again. You know, all the good things. And this is coming from someone who is a passionate multishipper. I have lived through several shipping wars in different fandoms and came out victorious after all.
I am probably the only person out there who cares about the big picture, the overall storyline and the worldbuilding of Miraculous in addition to all details and implications that could develop into fascinating plotlines relevant to the main story. It is a rather lonely fandom experience, I must confess. But, hey? Who cares? I am here to have fun and bring to the table discussions no one wants to have.
So, let's talk about the basics.
If you, as the writing team, are capable of keeping only 1 thing consistent, then please, I beg you, let it be the basic concepts of your universe. Because in this case, one has to actively put effort into writing characters and conflict resolutions badly. And also because nothing can save bad worldbuilding.
I don't have high worldbuilding standards for Miraculous. They certainly aren't as high as the ones I had for Legend of Korra (which was a badly written trainwreck, that ATLA doesn't deserve as a sequel) or the ones I currently have for Dragon Prince. Therefore I won't be too harsh in my criticisms. Granted, I think that Miraculous has better worldbuilding and lore consistency than Winx Club for example (I haven't seen the reboot yet, so writers might have fixed their worldbuilding at least a little bit). Even though I enjoyed Winx when I was younger and some elements of this story still attract me.
Both serialised and episodic shows as well as movies to the lesser extent must have some flexibility in worldbuilding and plot because you can never be 100% sure where your story is going. Maybe, you'll get money for more seasons, maybe not. However, you must never lose sight of your basic concepts. They have to stay the same no matter what, because rewriting lore and retconning major developments every new season is not and never will be called good writing.
Forgive me for using architectural metaphors, but you need a solid foundation to build any kind of structure. Otherwise, everything falls apart.
I like to apply this logic to writing as well. When designing a world where your story takes place, you must lay a few ground rules. It's especially important if you have a magic system. What kind of ideas absolutely must exist? What kind of conclusion do you want your story to have? Does your magic system has limitations? Where is the grey area? Could you introduce new elements later on?
And I feel like the writing team of Miraculous Ladybug did not ask these questions. This may feel like I am nit-picking canon material and looking for problems that simply aren't there, but I promise that I am not. You see, things that I am about to point out only seem small at first glance. But these details are actually the source of the largest plotholes in the series. And their presence negatively affects character development, conflicts and resolutions of said conflicts.
That doesn't mean that I have nothing good to say about the magic system of the show and its elements. There are a lot of great ideas and concepts. And some of them have the potential to contribute to the delightful story.
Let's dive right into it, shall we?
Camouflage
I have to give credit where it's due because the idea of camouflage and shapeshifting for Miraculouses is brilliant. It seems like Miraculous can't fundamentally change its type of jewellery or accessory. The ring will always be the ring but with a different ornament, colour or shape. This is true most of the time (Monkey Miraculous is an exception since it transformed into earplugs/headphones/headband/circlet) It makes sense and avoids plotholes. Grimoire doesn't have the pictures of each Miraculous in disguise for identity protection. That was very neat too. I have no comments. This concept was very good.
Also, since Marinette wore a nose ring of the Ox in "Kwamibuster" without any problem and Adrien wore Ladybug's earrings in "Reflekdoll", we can assume that you don't need to have piercings to wear a Miraculous. Miraculous just magically passes through your skin.
I'm interested to know the following. Can Kwamis recognise a camouflaged Miraculous on a person? Can the holder order them to confess the identity of this person? This shouldn't be possible for identity protection just like with Kwamis sensing each other. But more on that in later posts.
Power Levels
For a long time, we assume that there are only 7 Miraculouses. Turtle belongs to Master Fu, Gabriel has Butterfly and Peacock, Marinette and Adrien have Ladybug and Black Cat. Everything is pretty straightforward. Then it's revealed that there are more jewels and more boxes. It makes the worldbuilding interesting, but it also majorly complicates things, making them inconsistent.
Their position in the Miracle Box implies their power levels. Creation and destruction are the most powerful forces in existence, therefore they are at the top. Moreover, it makes this Box the most important, the most powerful out of all others. Su Han in "Furious Fu" calls it "Mother Miracle Box". Fox, Turtle, Bee, Butterfly and Peacock have less power than the main pair, but more than the Miraculous of the lower Zodiac tier (since they correspond with animals of the Chinese Zodiac).
1. Ladybug can create anything out of nothing (Lucky Charm, which gives what you need the most at the moment). This Miraculous can resurrect the dead, reverse the effects of the Cataclysm. The power of Miraculous Cure or Miraculous Ladybug can work in several ways:
it simply repairs the damage (puts stuff back together, heals injuries and so on)
it reverses time for the matter, restoring things back to the state they were before the destruction occurred (however, the Cure doesn't erase people's memories of everything that happened unless they were mind-controlled, frozen in place or transformed by Akuma into something else - this is an important point that I'll discuss some other time)
How does Miraculous Cure work when there are no supervillians? In NY Special Marinette just says this.
Excuse me, what? What was that? You can't do anything when the villain is gone? What the hell?
*insert here every scene where Ladybug fixed Paris after destroying akumatized/amokized object (this action causes the Akuma victim to detransform/sentimonster to disappear - villain is gone) and purifying butterfly and feather*
It was such cheap angst. I couldn't even be upset when Adrien gave up his Miraculous, because that whole situation is just stupid. But, never mind. We aren't talking about that today.
Apparently, Lucky Charm and Miraculous Cure only work when summoned to battle a specific villain. What is the point then? Huh? You can't tell me that Ladybug has the power of unlimited creation and then say that she can't repair the damage without a special Lucky Charm that was magically synchronised with specific big bad of the week.
Ladybug also can purify Akumas. It makes sense for Ladybug to have the ability to reverse the magic of less powerful Miraculous. But this power can't be applied universally. How does this power of reversal apply to different situations where there is no evil Butterfly holder? Can Ladybug reverse the magic of any Miraculous?
The unlimited power of creation introduced in season 4 ("Mr. Pidgeon 72") is another fascinating thing. On one hand, it's logical and proves the status of this Miraculous as the most powerful. On the other hand, by introducing this power, you have created a plothole. Look, Marinette can create the charm which repels Akumas. If Ladybug can create anything then what stops her from creating a tool for finding Hawkmoth (like special glasses for discovering identities or a compass)? I mean, the show says that the power of creation is unlimited, it means that the creation of such tool is possible.
2. Black Cat can destroy anything with Cataclysm, even other Miraculous. He can kill living things and turn them into ash, but not himself. This Miraculous is supposed to have other special abilities that we don't see. And they should be equal to powers of Ladybug, both in number and in potency. Unfortunately, after 3 seasons writers didn't give us anything. It makes laughable the idea of balance between Ladybug and Black Cat.
Now, to the second tier. These Miraculouses have a singular ability, but they need a second one to keep the power balanced between Zodiac and the main pair.
3. Butterfly creates champions with different superpowers. But how does the time limit of children work for Butterfly? In theory, the countdown should start right after the creation of the Akuma since for Ladybug and Chat Noir countdown starts after activation of their powers even if they don't use them. However, if the countdown of the Butterfly begins after Akuma creation then there's no point because the holder has to stay transformed to guide their champion. The charged butterfly won't have time to even grant powers before the transformation of the child-holder drops. This issue is never explored because Gabriel doesn't have a time limit. However, I feel like it should be addressed in flashbacks of past Butterfly holders for example.
This Miraculous should be less powerful than Ladybug and Black Cat. It's often not. Some Akumas are too overpowered. Stormy Weather can move the Earth away from the Sun, Timetagger can send people through time and jump through time as well, Chat Blanc destroyed the world with a single energy blast, Miraculer could steal powers of those more powerful than her by default. These are the most notable examples. One could argue that Chat Blanc was a different case. Hawkmoth simply gave the most powerful Miraculous a boost. However, we know that even without a holder (the wildest and the most powerful form of uncontrolled Miraculous magic) Plagg's Cataclysm can't destroy the universe just like that (he presumably wiped out dinosaurs and sunk Atlantis on his own without a holder). I think that the less powerful Miraculous (Butterfly) shouldn't be able to increase the power of destruction to such a degree and give Black Cat the power to destroy celestial bodies and galaxies.
Writers want us to see Hawkmoth as the formidable villain. But it's not easy because he is less powerful than your main heroes by default of your worldbuilding. Sometimes writers make the Butterfly more powerful than creation and destruction to raise the stakes, breaking the laws of their magic system. So, how do you solve this? Let Ladybug and Black Cat keep their status as the most powerful and instead of giving Hawkmoth more magical power, make him smarter, more cunning, inventive. Gabriel is a fashion designer, whose creativity makes him a very good Butterfly holder. He has a life full of experience, he knows much more about things than the main teenage characters. Catalyst was very interesting for this very reason. Gabriel sort of discovered a cheat code to boost his powers. Show us how he experiments with his powers, how he analyses his past Akumas and tries to find the most effective ones. Maybe Gabriel tries to design Akumas that can specifically neutralise Ladybug and Chat Noir. This exploration could also give writers an opportunity to explain how the powers of Butterfly work. Can he control the type of powers he grants? Can he control the appearance of Akumas? There are many things to be explored.
4. Peacock creates sentimonsters. I remember that fans were very disappointed when the power of the Peacock was revealed at the end of season 2. I was one of them. The concept of Amoks is far too similar to akumatized butterflies. Other Miraculouses have unique abilities and keywords for their powers, while Peacock just looks like Butterfly 2.0. That glowing mask effect just adds insult to injury.
You have to start by figuring out the powers of the Peacock in a normal situation. If a holder is a good person, then how does their power work? For example, make them related to sight (because of the "eye" pattern on feathers). Maybe, Peacock grants the ability to see the several possibilities of the future, but only a few minutes ahead. Maybe, this Miraculous gives you the ability to see through someone's eyes for a few minutes (and the victim is completely unaware of the intrusion). Perhaps, Peacock allows the holder to use feathers (or tiny peacocks) as cameras one at a time and be all-seeing. These feather-spies can be destroyed by the holder or disappear on their own after some time. Such power could be devastating when used against heroes in canon.
5. Bee can paralyze. This power is pretty straightforward. Once I read a fanfiction focused on very vell done Chloe Redemption, where she fights alongside Ladybug and Chat Noir. Eventually, she grows and becomes a better person. This fic ends with an Akuma battle, where LB and CN are trapped and Akuma is ready to kill them. But Chloe uses a second power of the Bee on the villain - Miraculous Stinger. It's deadly both for the holder and for the victim (because bees die when they sting someone). Chloe kills the Akuma with a Stinger before it can get LB and CN, but she too dies making the ultimate irreversible sacrifice. I will add a link if I find it again.
6. Turtle can create a shield. I don't have much to say on this either. It feels underpowered compared to others in the second tier. Maybe Turtle can also slow down opponents (because turtles aren't the fasters animals out there).
7. Fox creates illusions and acts as their puppeteer. In order to create a balance between other powers, these illusions must hold for as long as the holder needs them to. I propose this mostly because we see that Venom of the Bee lasts very long, the shield of the Turtle lasts either until it's destroyed or the holder wants to remove it, same goes for Akumas and sentimonsters who disappear only when the holder wants them to or their affected object is destroyed.
Let's talk about Zodiac tier. Miraculous of the third tier shouldn't have the second ability like more powerful ones. These powers are the most inconsistent. Even if we haven't seen all of them yet.
8. Mouse can create many small clones of the holder. It is unclear how these clones communicate with each other and how many of them this Miraculous can create. The holder can control the number of clones. This power was very convenient in "Kwamibuster" and it makes sense symbolically for the mouse. What activates the time-limit for children? Marinette didn't have any problems with it when she became Multimouse.
9. Snake can create a 5-minute time loop and has the ability to come back in time. This Miraculous feels a bit overpowered for the Miraculous of the Zodiac Tier. The holder can reset the time as many times as he/she needs to. It's was a good source of drama and trauma in "Desperada". I was honestly surprised that Adrien was capable of fighting after spending months in a loop. But this doesn't change the fact that Snake is overpowered. You can give this Miraculous the power to hypnotise or keep the time ability but place a limit on the number of resets. How does the lyre work as a weapon? Who knows? No one!
10. Dragon can shapeshift into elements: water, wind and lightning. It has the coolest transformation words hands down (Bring the Storm and Open Sky). Apparently this Miraculous doesn't have the time limit.
11. Rabbit can time travel or jump through alternative realities, even writers aren't sure. Time-travel in this show is so badly written it gives me a headache. This Miraculous shouldn't exist just like its powers. Snake belongs to the same tier, but 5 minutes and whole centuries of time jumps aren't comparable in power levels. They are not and this is the hill I will die on. Give the Rabbit powers related to its symbolism in China like an ability to de-age people, heal them or give them a speed boost in contrast with Turtle who might have the ability to slow down.
This Miraculous is so special that its Kwami - Fluff can live separately from his Miraculous in a Miracle Box for millennia (Fluff lives in the Box in "Sandboy", but his Miraculous, pocket watch, was passed down for generations in Alix's family). This is a discussion for a separate post, however. There's a lot to unpack. We'll do that some other time. You will suffer with me but at a later date.
12. Horse can create portals. They could lead anywhere, which is pretty cool. On the other hand, this power is not very useful in direct combat, especially when it's used by a child since we can have only one portal per transformation.
13. Monkey can cause a malfunction in powers of other people. What is the point of this? This power was specifically created by writers to defeat Akuma in "Party Crasher". That's it. What if your target is not magical? How does this Miraculous work in different circumstances?
14. Pig shows people their greatest desire. Both the holder and the recipient of this power can see this desire. Chat Noir wasn't impressed in "Guiltrip" and neither was I. It's underpowered compared to other Miraculous in this tier. Also, why does the tambourine can shoot energy beams? Why?
That's all I have to say on the matter. I'll update the power analysis as needed.

He has tried. Kind of. Sort of. Maybe. He has, at least, attempted to try.
But it hasnât worked.
And itâs not like they particularly mind.

Eret has not stopped moving.
Well, she refuses to stop moving, does not feel like they should. It would be⊠It would be wrong to stop. Foolish did not give up his life for hers so she could waste it in idleness.

They do not know how to forgive themself for that.)
She canât just⊠stop. Thereâs⊠Thereâs no time for pauses, no time for quiet, only time to move forwards. Eret builds, and he digs, and he does his best to keep away from everyone elseâs land of sight.

Even if the hours pass them by as they fill out paperwork, as they pile stone together and mine for andesite, Eret knows how much time has passed them by, knows the information as well as they know the back of their hand.
There is a golden watch around her wrist.
For Eret, it says, the letters carefully carved in its lug. She has never seen Foolishâ writing, but there is a certainty in his heart, born from the proud look in his emerald eyes the night ofâ

She has not seen him write, but she has seen him type in the communicator, and knows that his typing is a mess. The idea that impatient, active Foolish sat still, the thought that he carefully, delicately carved these letters, one stroke at a time, on a surface so tiny, not for the grand memory of a build to impress others but for this detail that nobody else would see, it⊠itâŠ

Itâs too much to consider. They do not dwell on it.
Heâd carved a small figure in the crown of it, too, a poppy.
Itâs her favorite flower. She does not know how the god knew.

Sometimes, he finds himself angry at the god who so graciously gave her this gift. It was much easier to go on about her life when she didnât know a part of themself was missing.

But that sounds ungrateful, and it sounds wretched. Those thoughts make her out to be someone she does not wish to be. He would like to be worthy of Foolishâs sacrifice. He would likeâŠ

She has not slept a single day of it, yet he is not tired.
Physically so, at least. There is a buzz thrumming on his veins, a shimmering sensation over her skin. She has not slept and yet she is not exhausted. He goes without eating but is not starving. He hadnât felt thirsty until he tasted water. She spent hours mining for andesite, armorless, and not a single mob strayed close.
(Tell them their importance to the Universe.)
It has been a week since the Banquet.
She looks down at their hands. Not a single scratch. Not even a bruise. Even though her hands were bare, even though he hasnât stopped for hours, in days, there is not a single ache in their body. There is nothing that hurts. Not even their back, usually tired after cartography work, after building and finding more resources, tired from the weight of their guilt, does not hurt.
She finds herself in front of a mirror.
The person who stares back does not look like a monarch. The person who stares back looks flawless, unweighted, magical. Beautiful.
He has not changed out of the dress since... that night, and yet there is not a single tear on it besides the ones from the Eggpireâs trap, not a stain or a loose thread. Their crown is goneâ
all their gold is, only the watch remains, she cannot stand the look for it but she could stand much less to lose it
â and so is the corset, the shoulder pads, but the red gown still flows and falls, precious in its detailing. There are no bags under their eyes, no grime in his hair. There is nothing wrong with them.
(You look lovely, the captain had said, present tense, when they found each other by the spider spawner, when she showed Eret her graveyard.
Eret builds and Puffy does too. Different families of the same typeface. Different translations of the same text.)
Her hands shake, she steps closer. She is barefoot. How has she not stepped over a rock? How is he not hurt? Why are their heels not sore?
He steps closer.
There is a fine line of gold around her throat, settled into skin.

(Does it know we love it? That the Universe is kind?)
Totems do not heal an injury from before the mortal blow.
But with Eret, there was no mortal blow at all. They know magic, and that night they felt it sink into their body. It had nothing to heal, nowhere to go. It could not reach Foolish, so it curled around her heart.
And the Universe, even then, watched.
The gods are the Universeâs favorite children. One of them died for Eret. It will not let her get hurt. It will not let his sacrifice go to waste.
No matter how much they deserve the pain for taking Foolish away from the living.
(You are not alone.)
Eret collapses into the mirror, catches herself with one hand. Suddenly, they feel like crying again.
You idiot, she wants to tell him, wants to scream it to his face. He wants to tell Foolish off for this. They want to make sure he knows to never do it again, that his life is not a trading card, that she does not want it, that she would rather die herself than see his body dissipate into divine light again and be haunted by his spirit, by his love, by his fear.
But she canât.
He is back. She knows he is. Sam had told her, when they discussed the Banquet as Puffy collected some dirt, the words he sacrificed himself for me had spilled from her mouth before he could stop them.
Sam had looked at them with a mixture of pity and guilt.
(Those had been his friends once, had they not? Bad and Ant and Skeppy. The Badlands, a land of chaos, a land of love. Always together. Bad and Ant had been Samâs choice of prison guards.)
(And Ponk had been his choice of beloved.)
(And Hannah had been his chosen ally.)
Sam had said he was with Ranboo and I last night and had closed his mouth around something else heâd wanted to say.
But Eret must have looked pitiful enough, because heâd continued after a pause.
He was pretending nothing was wrong.
Eretâs heart had broken.
She cannot see Foolish, because inevitably she would bring up his sacrifice, and whatever fragile peace Foolish had built around himself, sheâd destroy.
He doesnât want to hurt him anymore.
(All you would do would be to hurt him, guilty, harmful, poisoned, you are but a wicked seed of pain.)
She cannot see Foolish.
So she ignores her communicator when it rings.
(âalways late, old pal, you should keep your communicator on you at all times, i will send you signs across the sky, hereâs a messenger, did you seriously just leave me waitingâ
No.)
It keeps beeping as she retrieves her sickle, as she finds the mirror again.
It keeps beeping as she throws the sickle towards its surface, as the mirror shatters at her feet.
Not a single piece of glass sinks into her skin.
(All you do is destroy. You were not meant for peace.)
(You are growing restless.)
It keeps beeping. She keeps ignoring it.
Eventually, it stops.
Hours pass before she retrieves it.
Old pal.
Hello.
We should talk.

There is not a single mistake in these messages. It strikes her more than it probably should.

The words echo in their head. They can hear it in Foolishâs voice even if they have never heard him speak them.
Perhaps he should go. The time Foolish proposed is early in the morning but itâs not like Eret has been sleeping. They havenât even changed, even though itâs been nearly two weeks and counting. They should⊠They should go. If Foolish wants to see them, maybe they could talk, and he did promise to figure out their memoâ
(âIts okay, Eret.â
Your fault. Your fault. Your fault. Your fault.)
Perhaps he should go. But the time Foolish proposed is early in the morning and itâs not like Eret has been sleeping. They havenât even changed, even though itâs been nearly two weeks and counting. They should⊠they should rest.
âMaybe next week,â she whispers to no one, to the Universe. âMaybe we can meet next week instead.â
If Foolish wants to see them, maybe they could reschedule.

There is a cat by the steps of Eret's castle. It looks a little like a toasted marshmallow.
Eret finds it some food. He sits in the steps while the cat eats from a bowl that may have been too precious to use for a pet's food once.
"Do you have an owner, kitty?" They ask, scratching between the cat's ears. It looks too well-kept to be a simple stray, but there is no name tag around its neck. Then again, name tags are rare to find, that might not mean anything.
The cat simply blinks at her and bumps its forehead against her hand.
Maybe she should give him a name.

Shklance - I Died
I feel like I basically dropped off the face of the planet, and for that I apologize. I have no excuses, except stress and mental health have been a huge problem lately and Iâve just been trying to find balance in my life. I canât promise anything in the near future, with holidays coming up, and I have finals in like 3 weeks, and then my husband and I are moving at the end of the year, and then my little sisterâs wedding is a few weeks after so Iâm helping with that, and basically my life is just a mess right now, but I am still working on stuff, comments are always welcome and really do help to get me motivated, and hopefully I can get back into the groove of writing daily and posting weekly!
This story is probs gonna be a part 1 of 2. Hopefully. As is, I wanted it to be a stand alone, but Iâve been drafting it for almost a month now and I just want to throw it at you guys. So know Iâm working on a part 2, where they talk about the whole thing and you see everyoneâs reactions to what happened. This was actually a request someone made of me on my Ao3 account, but Iâve always loved reading stories dealing with everyone finding out about Lance dying. Just never thought I could do it justice haha. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Lance knew that this was going to be an emotional day for all of them, but seriously, this was a little overkill. He knew he shouldnât have gotten out of bed today.
Sure, it was the one-year anniversary of the day they all saved the universe, ended the war that had gone on for decades, blah blah blah, but getting up also meant that he was going to have to see everyone again.
Not that he wasnât thrilled to see them! He and Hunk especially had been waiting for this day for months, and he couldnât wait to see Pidge and Matt again, either. Last Lance had talked to them, they had been working on some seriously neat stuff. They were sure to be a lot of fun.
Hell, he had even been looking forward to seeing Allura again, even though things had never really been the same between them after Allura broke things off. Though, considering how hurt he was still feeling about their break up, it was probably a good thing she had canceled last minute. Sheâd said that she needed to focus on helping the universe heal. Lance had wanted to go with her, but she rejected him. He knew she was trying to be kind, telling him that he âdeserved the time to restâ and that she âknew how much heâs been missing his home planet.â But really, all it had done was serve to remind him that he wasnât actually necessary.
Not like Shiro and Keith were.
Allura hadnât had any problems taking them with her, even though everyone else (even Keith) and agreed that if anyone deserved the down time, it was Shiro. Especially since Shiro had seemed a little weary when he accepted the invitation from Allura. Personally, Lance believed the only reason he agreed to go was because he knew that Keith wouldnât be happy staying in one place anymore, and of course, there was no way they were going to allow themselves to be separated again, not after everything that had happenedâŠ
And Lance was even looking forward to seeing Keith and Shiro, since he had probably missed them the most. But he also knew that it was going to be hard. It was always hard seeing them together, but knowing that theyâve been doing so much good out in the universe, that theyâve gotten to see so much more of those worlds than he had⊠That was going to be hard.
Not to mention Lance still hadnât managed to shake the crushes heâd had on them for so long now.
Or the fact that while everyone else was off changing the universe, traveling the galaxies, creating newer and better technology and inventions, Lance had done nothing? Okay, so farming wasnât nothing. And no one could deny that Earth needed some TLC after the trauma of the war had nearly destroyed it. But as much as he enjoyed the simple hard work involved, that didnât mean he didnât understand it was stupid. It was pathetic. His friends were still fighting, in their own ways, and Lance felt as if he had simply given up. He couldnât figure out what he wanted to spend his time doing, what felt most worthy of his time and attention, and so he had allowed himself to fall back on something easy.
And he wasnât sure that he could face his friends while knowing the truth about himself, that he was a coward and had no mission or goals in life.

So, maybe Lance was a bit of a drama queen, because things had actually been going better than he expected. Everyone looked good, older and more experienced. Hunk had even grown out some facial hair, though it was a little sparse coming in. Lance knew that wouldnât be the case for very long. The most shocking was Alluraâs news about expecting a child (Keith and Shiro had passed it on in her absence). That hurt way more than Lance thought had a right to, but he tried hard to suppress that pain until he could process it in private. Possibly while crying over a tub of ice cream.
And as far as their actual dinner and celebration went, well⊠it really had been inevitable that their discussion would become heavier. And, as usual, Lance couldnât keep his own mouth shut.
âWe had some good times, though, right?â Lance laughed easily, trying to direct the conversation back to something lighter, something easier (at this point heâd had a couple decades to cement his masks, and he was good at pretending like nothing was wrong). âI mean, we might have been injured, and torturedââ
âLance,â Hunk warned. He darted a quick, concerned look to Keith and Shiro, but thankfully neither of them looked too worried. Instead, they were staring at Lance with such sappy looks Hunk was irritated Lance wasnât paying enough attention to notice on his own. A shared glance with Pidge told him that at least he wasnât alone in his annoyance.
Lance continued thoughtlessly, âand I mean, maybe a couple of us died, but hey! In the end, it all turned out okay, and look at everyone, living their best lives!â (Lance was firmly ignoring the fact that he had spent most of his free time leading up to today pouting in bed. No one else knew, and therefore it didnât count.)
Pidge opened her mouth, but Shiro spoke first. His brows were furrowed, and his nose had scrunched up a little. Lance wanted to melt at the cuteness of it. âDid someone else die? I thought I was the only one. Who else died?â
Lanceâs jaw snapped shut. He couldnât remember if it had even been brought up or not⊠It had to have, right? Thereâs no way his friends â his team â had just gone on for this long without knowing! He thought they were just ignoring it! Things had been crazy, and theyâd never really gotten a chance to slow down and breathe, let alone discuss everything that had happened. And that was fine! That was to be expected! But now he was supposed to believe they just didnât know??? Did that mean they didnât care? That they didnât notice all the nightmares that had become the norm after his death? The way he was jumpier for months after that battle? And if that were the case, then was it even worth bringing up now, so long after it had happened?
Lanceâs face was burning, the warm flush traveling up to the tips of his ears, and possibly all the way down his neck. He could feel his eyes welling up, but he brushed it away, pretending his face palm in order to hide the movement. He glanced at his friends, unsurprised to find Hunk staring at him intently. Pidge was muttering to herself, obviously trying to determine what had happened on her own. Lance couldnât even bear to drag his gaze to Keith or Shiro.
He tried to get out of answering Keith.
âOops haha, mustâve miscounted, I meant to say that one of us had died,â Lance laughed again but unlike earlier, this one was decidedly uncomfortable. âBecause. Obviously. One of us⊠did. Sorry, Shiro. But like, you died. That happened. And it was weird and we got a weird clone out of the deal, which was weird â did I say that already? â and like he wasnât a great dude, so Iâm glad you didnât stay dead, you know? Youâre much nicer than that clone was, he was kind of a jerk. No offense, Shiro. I mean, not that youâre the clone or anything, cause youâre Shiro, and that was Not-Shiroââ
Oh dear God why wouldnât they shut him up? Lance was so busy panicking about what he was saying that he didnât notice Shiro and Keith slowly standing, approaching him from each side. But Hunk and Pidge could almost see the concern rising off them.
âBut he was mean, and he yelled at us a lot. Although I guess he really spent most of his time yelling at me, which really, makes sense, but again, not something you wouldâve done, Shiro, so Iâm glad you didnât stay dead or anything, because Not-Shiro was a terrible replacement andââ
âShiro yelled at you?â Keith had come close enough that he could lay a warm, gentle hand on Lanceâs shoulder. Lance almost flinched at the contact, it had been so long since someone had touched him like that. Sure, he saw his family way more often than he had while they were fighting in space, but, come on. They were fighting in space. He never saw them back then! Anything was an improvement over that! Anyway, the point was, he knew he was lonely. He ignored it. It didnât matter. His friends were happy, his family was safe.
âWerenât you listening when I said it was Not-Shiro?â was all Lance could think to say. Keith rolled his eyes.
âWhy did he yell at you?â Shiro asked. Lance shrugged.
âLance had some good advice to share. Though honestly, Iâm thinking that Lanceâs plan just wouldnât have suited the cloneâs purposes and he wanted to make sure that Lance would stop pushing. So he yelled, knowing that would be enough to shut Lance down,â Hunk said. He shot Lance an apologetic look as he did so. Smart, because Lance was Not Happy with him. Now wasnât the time to share petty hurts!
âPersonally, I believe it was because if anyone was going to find out he wasnât really Shiro, it wouldâve been you,â Pidge shrugged. And really, et tu, Pidge? This wasnât fair at all. Not to mention, now Lance could feel the now-familiar guilt from knowing he hadnât been able to tell.
And that was what finally had Lance speaking up. âOh come on, guys, thatâs not even the worst any of us suffered out there! Lotor joined the team! I died! Shiro died! Keith left! We had bigger things to deal with!â
There was a brief silence following this, long enough for Lance to squeeze his eyes shut and briefly mutter âFuckâ to himself, and thenâ
âWhat do you mean, you died?â
Lanceâs ability to make things worse every time he opens his mouth really should be considered a wonder of the world.
He opened his eyes hesitantly to find that everyone was watching him intently. Tears were welling in Hunkâs eyes, and Lance knew that if he paid too much attention to his friend, then he would break almost instantly. He avoided looking in that direction, lips pursed shut, determined to stay quiet now. But they were just as determined to make him talk.
âLance, please, what happened?â and since when the hell does Pidge beg? Thatâs just wrong. But effective, because that wrongness made Lance jerk his head up, eyes accidentally locking with Shiro.
He looked so sadâŠ
âIt really wasnât a huge deal, I was just saying that there was a lot happening. It was pretty much impossible for all of us to keep up with each other, what with Lotor and Allura, and Keith disappearing then coming back, and the search for Shiro⊠and Hunk, Pidge, you guys had a great team thing going on there. That was a lot of fun! And then remember Coran had us playing Monsters and Mana? Good times!â
âYou played what?â Keith asked, confused. Then he shook his head. âStop distracting us, Lance. Answer the questions.â
âUm. What questions?â
Keithâs face hardened, eyes doing that dangerous flinty thing that Lance had always loved to see when he got mad. But before he could say anything, Lanceâs phone went off. He really did try to hide the relief on his face as he stood, but the way Shiro set his jaw made him think he was not successful.
Before Lance could answer the call, he felt his phone plucked from his fingers. He lunged for it, and Keith slipped it into his own back pocket, out of Lanceâs reach. Even worse, his lunge for it brought their faces way too close. Lance jerked back, face flaming a bright red, but he felt himself crash back into Shiroâs firm, solid chest. He started to stammer apologies, but Keithâs hands settled on Lanceâs shoulders, pulling him away, and then he and Shiro pushed him back down into his chair. As Shiro moved to kneel next to Lanceâs chair, Keith held him there, grounding and sure. He leaned down, putting his mouth close to Lanceâs ear and then murmured âPlease. We need to know. Weâre horrible friends for not already knowing, but weâre asking now and we need you to tell us. Let us help.â And Shiro gripped Lanceâs arm, thumb smoothing against his darker skin, making it harder and harder for Lance to want to move.
Lance knew that they were blowing this out of proportion. But he still felt touched. Heâd thought they were just ignoring his death because other things were happening at the same time, but maybe that wasnât really the case. Maybe they truly hadnât known. Maybe Allura had never said anything, and Lance, expecting Allura to say something, hadnât said anything either, and so maybe they just didnât know. Maybe sharing it now would be okay.

Secret Hero [5/10]
Pairing: Bakugou x reader, Ushijima x reader

Summary: Â After becoming the number 2 hero, Bakugou accomplished everything he ever wanted. He beat Deku in a few matches, even if he wasnât the number 1 hero. He got all the fame, beat countless villains, was acknowledged by all his friends and family. But he wasnât satisfied. He wasnât happy. Bakugou realized that this wasnât the life he wanted. So he left the life of a hero and decided to hide to live the rest of his life as a normal person.

After lunch with your family, it was clear that you were not feeling the best. All those comments about your weight and your career and everything you were doing wrong was going to your head. You cut breakfast out of your daily routine, as well as lunch. Even if you did eat lunch, you ate very minimal. Dinner was a different story. You were eating a normal portion but never to the point where you were stuffed. Your days were very fatigued and you could feel yourself losing energy to perform simple tasks. But if thatâs what you had to do to get skinny, then you would do it. Beauty is pain, as one would say.
But your mother couldnât get the hint. Since you took up on her offer to meet the boy she wants you to meet oh so badly, sheâs been bugging you nonstop to meet him and his mother for a nice lunch. And so here you were, standing in front of the restaurant your mother picked.
âBe on your best behavior, dear,â your mother warned. You knew she wanted this meeting to go well, but now you were starting to take back your words. You were nervous for sure. You had no idea who this guy was. You didnât know what he looked like, what he did for a living, his hobbies, nothing. Your mom left it to be a surprise till the very end and the anticipation was killing you.
âI know, mother,â you say. Well, time to put your mask on. All you had to do was meet this guy for your motherâs sake and hope that after this, she will leave you alone. Or not. But you would worry about that later.
You enter the beautifully aesthetic restaurant. Colors of gold and white covered the walls and ceiling, a chandelier hung in the middle of the room. Each table was organized neatly with the correct silverware, napkin and plates. Bouquets of fresh flowers sat at each table which set the atmosphere nicely. The waitress took you two to a private area where you were to meet this boy. As you walked to your destination, you looked around the restaurant. Neat, organized, everything looked exactly the same. Someone who was not raised in this environment might think coming here was a treat and would be lucky to dine here. But no matter how beautiful everything might look, you felt it was suffocating. Like you always had to act a certain way because you lived in luxury. But that wasnât you.
You and your mother arrived at the private room, your guests waiting patiently for you. As soon as you guys opened the door, the man and his mother stood up to greet you two. Your mother and the other woman happily greeted each other, giving each other a hug and a kiss on each cheek. The man you were meeting bowed to show his respect and softly introduced himself.
âUshijima Wakatoshi,â you heard him say.
âYes, and this is my daughter, (y/n),â your mother introduced you. But when she saw you still standing by the door, she clicked her tongue in disapproval, snapping you out of your daze. âHoney, come introduce yourself.â You bowed back at both of them and finally looked up to introduce yourself.
â(y/n), pleasure to meet you,â you say in your most fake voice. It took you years to perfect it and people believed it every time. You looked at the other mother and she came to embrace you in a hug.
âYou are more gorgeous in real life than in your pictures,â she complimented you. Yikes, theyâve seen pictures of you? You bet that they just really want you two to be together, thatâs why sheâs complimenting you so graciously. Your gaze moves from the woman to the man you were supposed to meet. And boy oh boy were you in for a surprise. You tried not to show it, but your eyes widened slightly when you saw who you were meeting.
Tall. Stoic face. Olive brown hair. He was the guy who ran into you the other day! And didnât apologize! Your mom wanted you to meet this guy? This was going to be an awkward lunch.
âNice to meet you,â you say to Ushijima, despite starting to have petty feelings for him.
âLikewise,â he says back with his deep ass voice.
âLetâs order, shall we?â your mother clapped her hands, clearly very excited for this encounter to finally happen. Every is in agreeance and takes a seat at the table. But before you could sit down, Ushijima comes over to your side to pull out your chair for you. That made both women very excited.
âMy, what a gentleman!â your mother in absolutely in love right now. You accept his offer with an awkward smile and sit down, Ushijima scooting your seat in at the same time. He goes back around to sit back in his seat, but is keeping eye contact with you the entire time. It makes you start having cold sweat. Does he recognize you? Does he remember how you acted and practically embarrassed yourself that day? You pray that that wasnât the case.
âTell us, Ushijima. How is your work life?â your mother started the conversation. If you knew any better, she was basically interviewing him.
âI just got promoted at my fatherâs company. So I am head of the new office in town that I believe (y/n) resides in,â Ushijima informs. Upon hearing your name, you look up at him only to find him already looking at you. That got you embarrassed and so you immediately looked back down.
âAh, is it that new office that Momo works at?â your mother was starting to connect the dots.
âMomo Yaoyorozu? She is actually my secretary.â Oh perfect. Heâs already come into contact with the gorgeous Momo. Thereâs no way he was falling for you now. You might as well stop trying because you already lost, again.
âIâd actually like to know what Miss (y/n) does for a living,â Ushijima turns his attention to you, waiting for your answer. You looked surprised, not expecting for him to take any interest in you.
âOh, uhm. Iâm a teacher,â you quietly say, a bit embarrassed that you had to say what your profession was. You were already put down by your family for that. You didnât need to hear it again, especially from strangers that you just met and who donât even know you.
âSo you like kids?â he asks.
âYeah, I do. I love being around them,â you started to get excited. You loved talking about your kids and how proud they made you. But you physically had to stop yourself. He probably wasnât interested in hearing your stories anyway.
âI think thatâs very admirable,â Ushijima compliments you, giving you an encouraging smile. And that threw you off guard. It actually made you more nervous. âTell me more.â He insisted. You looked and your mother and then at Ushijimaâs mother. They were both looking at you as if to say that they were interesting in hearing more from you.
So you gave a few stories about the kids in your classroom. How sometimes they can make your stomach hurt from laughter or how proud you were every time they learned something new. With each story, your eyes lightened up and Ushijima was silently listening to every word that you were saying. You were surprised that he didnât interrupt one bit because you were just so excited to talk about something you were just so passionate in.
âYou two fit so well. I think this is going to be a beautiful marriage,â Ushijimaâs mother clapped her hands in satisfaction. Your mouth dropped and your eyes immediately went to your mother, who was actively avoiding you.
âMother,â you harshly whispered her name. You simply just wanted to meet him, not get engaged with him. And she knew that, yet she just pulled you right into her trap.
âWhy donât you two take a walk in the garden. Get some alone time,â your mother was avoiding the situation. She looked pleadingly at Ushijima who got the hint. He stood up and made his way to you, sticking out his hand for you to take. You groan internally, taking a mental note to confront your mother later. You take his hand as he escorts you out into the garden. The mothers watch as their children walk away.
âTheyâll be fine,â they reassured themselves, taking a sip of tea and starting their own conversations.
Ushijima takes you around the small garden they had in the back of the restaurant. Of course they had something like this. Flowers and plants engulfed you at every which angle. The beauty in front of you doesnât distract you from what his mother just announced. An engagement?
âIâm so sorry. They must have forced you into this too,â you assumed, apologizing for this situation. But why were you even apologizing. You didnât have anything to do with this. Just like him, you were also the victim.
âJust a little bit,â he confessed, rubbing the back of his neck. âBut, Iâm willing to try if you are.â You stop in your tracks to snap your head to see if he was joking. It was hard to tell by the poker face he was wearing.
âYou actually want to do this?â you question his mentality.
âWhy not? We both canât find someone, so why not do the alternative?â he shrugs it off like it was nothing. But you still couldnât wrap your head around in.
âHow do you know I canât find someone?â you challenge him, feeling a bit insulted. You mean⊠itâs true but he didnât have to call you out like that.
âThen why would your parents put you up to something like this,â he points out. Yeah, he had a point. But still! You didnât want to admit that you couldnât find someone in your life. But if this was the only wayâŠ
âMhm, I can try. But I canât guarantee that anything will happen,â you gave him a fair warning.
âThatâs okay,â he says and moves so that heâs in front of you. âBecause I want to make this work. And then Iâm going to make you fall in love with me. And repropose when itâs the right time.â You stared into his olive brown eyes. He meant every word of it. And as sweet and romantic that may sound, your heart didnât skip a beat. You wanted it to so badly, but it doesnât.
 âMother isnât this a bit too soon?â you asked your mother on the phone. You were standing outside what you thought was an office building, but it instead wounded up to be a bridal boutique.
âWell if I told you, then you wouldnât have gone! Hurry inside, your appointment should be starting soon,â and hung up soon after. You sighed, putting your phone away in your purse. Youâve only met your fiancĂ© for a few weeks now and youâre already trying on wedding dresses so soon? Not only did you not feel confident, but you were discouraged because you were alone. You didnât have anybody by your side, not even your mother. It was very tempting to leave and come back sometime later, but you could never go against your mother. If she found out that you missed your appointment, she would go ballistic on you. With a regretful sigh, you entered the boutique.
âWelcome!â the lady at the front desk greeted you.
âUhm, hi. I have an appointment,â you say very softly.
â(y/n) right?â she asks, like she knew who you were already. You nodded your head, confused and shocked how she knew your name.
âPerfect, right this way!â her cheery voice rang in your ear. It was the same fake voice you used whenever you are with your family. Gross. She takes you over to a private room where many dresses are already laid out.
âNow, (y/n). What kind of dress are we looking for?â she asks. And it left you wondering. What did you want? The news of marriage was so sudden that you didnât have time to think of what you wanted. You just assumed that the older adults would take care of it and you were just there for the ride.
âIâm actually not sure,â you say embarrassed. Your consultant was probably judging you by now.
âThatâs okay! We can try on a few and decide what you like and donât like and go from there.â The consultant smiled at you, not a single ounce of judgment on her face.
So you tried on many dresses. The big, poofy, traditional style wedding dresses looked horrendous on you. The fishtail was interesting but you didnât like it. Lace looked old. You were starting to feel like finding a nice dress for you was hopeless.
âSo, tell me about the groom,â your consultant started a conversation while fitting you into your next dress. Gosh, what do you say to that? Do you just confess and say that, oh it was an arranged marriage I donât know this man at all?
âHeâs very handsome and nice,â you decided to say. You werenât wrong. Ushijima was very handsome and from those interaction that you did have with him, he was pretty nice. So technically, you werenât lying.
âAre you excited for your wedding?â she asks another question.
âNot really,â you blurted out without even thinking. You realized your mistake, now having said too much and covered your mouth. She starts to laugh which throws your off guard.
âI can tell,â she says. It was like the information you told her didnât surprise her at all.
âYou can?â
âOf course. The look on your face as you came in today, the way you talked about your husband and the fact that you brought nobody with you? It was clear as day, honey. But we get those kinds of brides all the time. You may not love the man youâre about to marry, but you still deserve to look beautiful on your wedding day.â She advices, tightening up the last bit of the dress.
âOkay, how about this one?â your consultant backed away and you saw yourself in the mirror. It had a corset bodice that hugged your waist beautifully. Embroidered flowers covered the top, all the way down to half of the dress and slowly faded out. The skirt was flowy and had a long train. The dress was beyond gorgeous. And for once, you thought you looked really pretty. You couldnât stop looking at yourself in the mirror.
âWow,â you breathed. You looked completely different, like you havenât seen this side of you before.
âI knew youâd like it. Iâll be right back. Iâm going to bring a veil to bring the whole thing together,â she says and quickly runs out of the private dressing room to retrieve the item. Youâre left mesmerized by the sight of you that you didnât even notice someone come in.
âYou look stunning,â a deep voice comes out of nowhere, scaring the living shit out of you. You turn around and Ushijima is standing there with his arms crossed, an amused look on his face.
âUshijima!â you scream his name, covering your heart with your hand. âYou scared me!â He laughs at your response, a chuckle coming from deep in his throat.
âSorry,â he simply said, making his way to stand next to you. He looked like he just got out of work since he was wearing a suit. He looked clean and well put together. And when he stood next to you, it was like seeing you already at the wedding.
âIs this what we are going to look like at the wedding?â you joke. You thought it was funny how you two looked dressed for the occasion.
âNo,â he said, wrapped his arms around your waist from behind. âBecause youâre going to look even more gorgeous than you do now.â His low, deep voice tickled your ear, making you feel a little nervous. You get a glimpse of him in the mirror and you had to look away when you saw that he was staring right back at you.
âOkay, I think this one oh-â your consultant comes back in with the veil and is surprised to see that you have company. And it looks like she was ruining a special moment too. âI can just come back.â She says as sheâs already backing out the door.
âOh, no itâs fine,â you reassure her, slapping Ushijimaâs hands away.
âWeâll take it,â he tells the consultant and gives her his credit card. She gladly accepts and is about to ring up the charge. While you were getting changed into your regular clothes, Ushijima was walking around the part of the shop where they sell other kinds of dresses. He comes across this one blue, off the shoulder dress and picks it up. Then heâs on his way back to the register with the dress in hand.
âThis one as well,â he puts the dress on the counter. It might have been an impulse buy but he knew that it was going to look amazing on you at the party.

First off I just wanna say holy shiz! My last post did really good! So thank you guys for the support, liking, reblogging, following me and my content. I know it's just a basic nostalgia blog but it's really cool to know that some really like the stuff I post.
I always try to post stuff that is nostalgic to me but also stuff others might find nostalgic as well because this blog isn't just about me it's about you as well but anyways I saw this post a while back about what you searched up on YouTube as a kid and I thought hey why not do this myself! I thought it would be a neat little idea that would bring us together more and let you cool dudezzzzz get to know me so with all that said let's get to it! (Also I apologize if its absolutely cringe lol!)
1. Salad fingers
So pretty much everyone knows who and what salad fingers is we don't really have to get into it but idk how but I was just never scared of it. I remember as a child one of my friends was terrified of salad fingers yet I somehow was okay with it. I remember seeing a fake episode of it and it being a rickroll because that was sorta popular back than. I think salad fingers is pretty cool tbh its neat.
2. Wasabi Productions
This was a channel I frequented quite a bit. It had some really funny humor at the time I mean I was a kid so really anything was funny most of the time. The channel imo was just sorta random and the humor was pretty random. Humor in this era of YouTube was just something else lol.
3. Simply Spoons
Don't remember this one as much tbh but my friend at the time loved like absolutely LOVED One Direction and we would sometimes watch this channel and this person would do prank calls while trying to impersonate Harry Styles and etc. Because my friend at the time was super into 1D we checked out a lot of 1D content.
4. The Adventurous Adventures of One Direction
Another gem of 1D content was these videos. We watched them a lot everytime a new video came out we would check it out. I don't know if I have a lot to say about this channel except for that most of the content was 1D and cartoons. I think the person still posted some 1D videos so if you want to check it out I will leave links below.
5. SophieGTV
Okay imma get to it because I know what some of you guys are thinking yes I absolutely loved LPS Popular lol but actually just Sophie's stuff altogether I really liked also SHES CANADIAN LIKE ME! Not many youtubers I know are from Canada so that's really heccin cool but anyways I loved her channel as a kid if you were talking to lil me I would probably say shes my favorite YouTuber. Sophie doesn't post much anymore but I remember when EVERYONE wanted a face reveal but I hope she is doing well now. She posted one year ago but hasn't posted since.
6. LPS popular
Hunny you know it. You know it. *insert will Smith that's hot that's hot* I know i just posted that i loved this series but really though this was my YouTube childhood I was absolutely in love with this series. The tea! The tea! I can't I used to binge this series all the time I remember my old friend absolutely loved this channel. Dude I miss being a kid sometimes with a wild and wacky imagination if I were a kid again I would totally rebinge this series lol!
7. LPSHannah
This girls channel was also amazing I didn't watch her videos a lot but I definitely liked a good handful of em. Her channel was just really cool and she did a face reveal! I don't know when but its definitely surprising! She sadly stopped making videos though (just checked big sad) do to coppa but I hope what she is doing is making her really happy and all the best to her. You can now find her posting on Hannah's Haven.
8. NamanthaSuxx
I wanna say she is also Canadian but honestly I have zero clue. I used to watch her channel sometimes when she would post videos about Monster High because at the time I was into those dolls which idk for sure but I think might be coming back? Anyways i wasnt as into the channel as my friend who introduced me to Namantha's channel.
9. Jpopluvr1000
Okay idk if this persons channel was always named this but I remember looking at their channel because they made a lot of Bratz themed videos and well me I am a Bratz fan and I remember this person got I think all or almost every 10th anniversary Bratz doll and making a video on it. I was really into Bratz maybe even more than Monster High tbh like those dolls were made the year I was born. Getting real for a moment but it is crazy knowing that they will be having their 20th anniversary and I am really hyped for the new dolls like honestly I love the screening and it might even be better than the last dolls lol but anyways I loved this persons channel it was great.
10. Webkinz, LPS, Bratz and monster high pool party videos
This one is just one big group because all were under the same thing. I really liked and still like swimming and so that's probably why I liked these videos as a kid there are some I watched but can't remember the name of at the moment and YouTube doesn't let you make it so you can find old videos easily especially if you can't remember them. I did remember I watched StarryStarr33 and I think strawberry516 but I don't know about strawberry for sure.
11. Smosh
The duo Ian and Anthony were sorta like a must watch on YouTube back in the day. They were just really big and it was difficult to ignore how popular they were on the site for a while. I loved their Honey Boo Boo video and I also remember watching Ian and Anthony open things on another channel. The humor was also very YouTubery it probably wouldn't be good in professional stuff but for teens and kids at the time most of us thought it was pretty funny.
12. Bratz collection
Just like jpopluvr1000 I just really liked Bratz dolls and collections of them.
13. LPS music videos
Didn't matter what it was I loved LPS as a kid so I was willing to watch anything with them.
14. KyleMonkey
My sister showed me this weird dude who made a video with him just eating chapstick and another of him farting, spitting out grapes and just being crazy and yeah honestly idk what to say about this dude lol
15. Key of Awesome
Didn't check them out a whole lot tbh but I enjoyed some of their parodies
16. Fred
Everyone acts like the didn't watch him but you know some of them have. I liked watching his videos as a kid I remember when one of them was rated for older people for no reason. Also is it just me or did anyone else like his songs?
17. The Annoying Orange
Same deal just orange and an orange. These videos were cool I remember when Fred and him had that lil vs battle thingy you kinda just had to be there to understand the hype about the annoying orange. The humor has died out but it was a nice thing while it lasted unless you got easily annoyed.
18. Wafflepwn and the greatest freakout ever
I remember watching these videos with my friend at the time we just thought it was the most hilarious thing honestly the first video where the dude stick a remote up his butt still makes me chuckle somehow but I remember my dad being very upset when he saw I watched these videos and also having a difficult time coming to the fact that SPOILER ALERT!
It was fake all along. If people didn't know that you know these videos would be extremely problematic.
Conclusion: YouTube still felt so new and different at this time and things were growing although a lot of the humor would not fly for understandable reasons I feel like it was charming and I was very lucky I got to be on YouTube. I was very young so a lot of the channels I watched were more kiddy and childish but it felt sweet and nice. A lot of these channels were so cool and sometimes I would stay up late and watch them. With all that said I will probably make a second one of these. I was very unsure whether or not I wanted to post this because a part of me thought it would be cool but another felt like it would be cringy and wanna know what? It's both lol that's my entire conclusion this post was cool, fun and very very cringy but hey why not make another again sometimes? It will be cool to look back on and maybe if I forget something I can just come back here and remember it! Do you have anything you searched a lot as a kid? Comment below!

Burdened by the Stars - Pt. 4

After a brief assessment away from the dizzying presence of the half-orc, I realized there was very little chance of the Royal quarters actually having what I needed. Nikostratus was the tallest and broadest in the family, and even he did not come very close to matching Erramun in height. Besides, I couldnât imagine my neat and tidy older brother wouldnât notice his clothing going missing. But the laundering rooms were near the bottom level of the castle, closer to the city than the towers. There was no telling if once I arrived I would be able to find some appropriate clothing with any ease, considering that laundry from every part of the castle was often washed in mixed tubs. There was also no way for me to know whose clothes would be on rotation for wash today, nor in what state, batch, or bin they might be in if I did find them. Which made a visit to the laundering rooms, while more anonymous and definitely more diverse, absolutely impractical for my devices. However, the guards quarters were not quite so far; only a few levels down and adjacent to the training cliffs. There, I knew, I would be most likely to find the belongings of perhaps the one resident in the entire goblin castle that might have a few items close enough to Erramunâs size.
It was an easy enough trip, though I tried to make it as hastily as possible. No guarantees of what that fool would get up to if I left him to his own devices for too long. I also wasnât entirely sure he had been completely honest when he had said he could manage the bath. Considering his wooziness since I had met him in the forest, I worried he might just pass out in the water and drown. Not that my being there would be much help, I reasoned. I certainly wasnât strong enough to haul a half-drowned half orc from the water should he require it. I was also more than a little perturbed with the recollection of the taut green skin running over his shoulders and muscular back. My mind supplied ample fodder for what might be waiting a little further down than my eye had succeeded in wandering during our prior parting. And the thoughts brought a hot flush to my cheeks. I quickly forced myself to focus on the task at hand.
Thankfully, the barracks were also mostly quiet. The majority of the guard would be on their daily patrols, or perhaps in the dining commons catching a meal beforehand. Any left here would be from night shift, so would most likely be resting in their bunks. I had been here often enough, and knew the layout by heart (as I knew most of the castle). I headed towards the largest of the chambers, near the back, where the General kept his private quarters. Retired General, he would say, should you care to ask him. Though considering he still managed to keep busy enough maintaining the guards and patrols, perhaps that was not the optimal word. His title was more ceremonial now than necessity, as he had the guard running like a perfectly well oiled machine, and more often than not you could find him with a drink in hand, laughing alongside the nobles in the sitting rooms of the castle. Still, I was glad General Damjan had maintained some personal quarters in the castle rather than permanently retiring outside its walls. It meant I might actually have a chance of finding a set of clothes that would fit my behemoth charge. I was also fortunate that although Damjan kept his private quarters locked, I knew exactly where the old soldier kept his key.Â
Damjan was, in a sense, like a grandfather to me. He had been a major part of Grierâs life after his fatherâs passing, and when Nikostratus had moved to the castle he had taken my brother under his wing as well. So it fell to reason that he had me spoiled rotten by the time I was 11; teaching me all the best goblinese curses, and a few fighting moves that were certainly not proper for a Princess to know. The old half-goblin was also a sound source for advice, and had an ample stock of wisdom to share with anyone willing to listen. Therefore, I had been to visit him in his office and chambers more than a few dozen times over the years. Which meant I knew his rooms nearly as well as mine and Nikoâs. Allowing me to steal in and out with as simple a shirt and pair of trousers as I could find and relock his door all within a matter of minutes. I was assuaged of the little stab of guilt I felt by the fact that if Damjan had been around to ask, he certainly would have been more than indulgent of my request. I simply just didnât have the time right now to look for the old General to tell him I had another half-orc stashed upstairs in my private chambers. I made a silent promise to the universe that I would make him a plate of his favorite pastries to make up for it.
It had barely been half an hour since I had left Erramun when I skittered down an upper hallway back towards the towers. Still, despite having managed to avoid the entirety of the current inhabitants of the castle and with prize in hand, I was anxious to be back. I was so distracted by the thought of what the half orc would be doing alone in my bed chambers that I moved automatically and inattentively. Causing me to almost run head first into a goblin as we both rounded the same corner from opposite directions.
âAh, little bird!â He exclaimed delightedly as we recovered ourselves.
I nearly squeaked in surprise, quickly hiding the bundle of clothes behind my back as Grier fixed me with his classic toothy smile. The goblin King seemed un-bothered by our near collision, though I had to work quickly to throw a cover over my guilty expression. I saw his scarlet eyes flick over me curiously at my movement, and one slender brow cocked up. I knew I would have to work fast to evade suspicion and make my escape. My brother-in-law was perpetually curious, and keenly observant. Prolonging our interaction would only heighten the chances that I would have to build a lie I wasnât prepared to forge.
âSorry, Grier, I wasnât paying attention to where I was going.â I told him quickly, starting to slide around his side. Careful to face him as I did with my back and hands squarely out of his line of sight. âBut Iâm sure youâre very busy, so I wonât keep you!â
He spun slowly on heel to match my movement. âNo trouble at all, little bird,â He replied, and I saw the suspicion already growing quickly on his face as his eyes narrowed ever so slightly, âNikostratus has been looking for you, you know.â
âOh, heâs always looking for me,â I tried to sound as nonchalant as possible, shrugging my shoulders, âMostly because the majority of that time he spends lost in the halls. Or searching a place he already checked having turned himself around and gone back on his own feet.â
Grier laughed at that, placing his hands on his hips. âYes, the man is completely hopeless I fear.â He followed me a step down the hall as I started to retreat backwards. âBut none-the-less⊠you seem to be making a particular point of avoiding him this time around.â
âI am just busy,â I started to assure him, âI-â
âMorgana, you know you have been avoiding us both since you first got here nearly a week ago.â He interrupted, his voice becoming uncharacteristically serious. âI am not sure what we did⊠or what youâre hiding⊠but please keep in mind you have the same air of secrecy about you as when you rescued that bear cub from the forest when you were 15.â He shifted his hands to cross his arms over his chest. His thin lips twitching in amusement. âIt was halfway through the kitchen pantry before you finally came clean⊠I do hope youâve learned your lesson since then?â
I gave a nervous, forced laugh. âI havenât smuggled in any wild animals, I promise.â Which was technically true.
He gave an unconvinced âhmmmâ at that. âBut you do know you can talk to us, yes?â He asked quickly, even as I opened my mouth to continue, âAbout anything that may be bothering you.â His head tilted slightly to one side. â... Nikostratus is worried about you.â
I felt a little tongue of anger flare up in me at that. âIâm not a child anymore.â I scoffed, my brow furrowing slightly. âI donât need nor want my brother hovering over me like some agitated mother hen!â
Grier considered that as well, and I started to take a few steps backwards down the hall. Eager to make my escape. Shaking my head in frustration and thinking that was the end of it. My brother-in-law was not usually the confrontational sort with me. He was good at gathering information, at poking holes in my defenses; but I tended to think he preferred to be my confidant rather than my guardian. We had developed a rather close relationship since he had married my brother, mostly revolving around how best to manage my tight lipped, straight backed sibling. It had been a rocky start for the two of them, and I had exclusive inside knowledge of how best to break through Nikoâs stony exterior. In later years, he had more often than not come to my defense when my brothers had sought to disperse punishments, or withhold liberties. He understood my wild spirit better than either of them, and that it caused my siblings and I to butt heads frequently. Not to say he wasnât carefully responsible around me. He had taken me as his ward as much as Niko had back our mother had passed when I was born. But he usually left any actual scolding to my brothers.
Which was why I nearly stumbled in surprise when he persisted in the face of my irritation. Rather than letting it pass as he usually would.
âWell, that may be the case, little bird,â He said, even as I continued to inch away from him, âBut regardless, you know your brother will always worry about you. And-â He continued before I could interject â- Even if you are upset with him, that is no reason to avoid your commitments. Most prominent being the promise you made to your nieces and nephews.â
That made me falter, and my retreat stilled. â... I didnât mean-â
âYou promised you would go with them to the gardens.â He pressed, not allowing me breath for excuses. The goblin raised one bejeweled hand, silencing any protests I might have had. âI understand if you would like your space from myself and Nikostratus, and I will speak to him about allowing you some. However, I would ask that you do not allow your current disdain to rub off on the children, as they have done nothing to raise your ire, and do not deserve your neglect.â
I winced now, guiltily. âI forgot IâŠâ I hesitated, and half expected Grier to fill the lull, as he often did. But the goblin merely raised his brow at me again, and I shuffled in my shame. â... Of course. Iâm sorry. I will be sure to collect them from their lessons todayâŠâ I couldnât help a guilty glance over my shoulder, as if I would be able to see the clothes scrunched up behind my back. â... I just need to drop something off in my rooms first, then I promise Iâll go straight to see them.â
âI appreciate that.â He replied, nodding slightly. âI know you likely didnât intend for them to get swept up in⊠whatever this is.â He crossed his arms again. âStill, I hope you and your brother reconcile soon.â His toothy grin returned. âI miss our little bird.â
I laughed softly, dropping my gaze to the floor. âI donât think weâre fighting, per say...â I hesitated briefly, â...but Iâll⊠keep that in mind.â
âAnd Iâll keep in mind that being stubborn and hot tempered runs in the family.â He mused, his voice still light-hearted. âAnd will try to muster what patience I can to wait this out.â
I almost laughed again, but settled for a respectful dip of my head. I longed to inch away, back down the hall in the direction of my rooms. But waited as long as I could stand under the goblin Kingâs scrutiny to avoid any more suspicion. Grier did consider me one last time, then sighed and gave his own little nod. Turning to head off himself. No sooner had he started than I spun and darted down the hall. Pulling my bundle of clothes around to shield them from his view as I did. I wondered only briefly what he would make of that, but didnât bother to linger on it long.
I took the steps to the tower two at a time, my heart pounding in my ears by the time I reached the top. Thankfully, no one else was around at that moment, and I made it back to my rooms unmolested.
I leaned back against my closed door with a brief sigh of relief. I hoped Grier wouldnât go looking for Niko yet. I knew he would be inclined to tell my brother about our interaction; the two shared just about everything with one another. Still I hoped he might wait until much later in the day. To give me a chance to properly wrap things up here before one of the pair came looking for me again. I didnât linger long against the wood, my eyes already darting about the small sitting room. But it seemed my strange company was nowhere to be seen. I had been away for far too long for him to be bathing still, I reasoned. Unless perhaps he was a particularly lazy orc, or was enjoying the hot, fresh water a bit too much. Not that I could picture such a thing, though I reminded myself I didnât know him all that well after all. I gathered up the salve and bandages from before in my bundle, listening for any sounds I might hear. I noticed the door to the bathing rooms appeared to be as I had left it, and hesitantly made my way over. I quickly chided myself, straightening up and squaring my shoulders. These were my rooms. I shouldnât have to sneak about shyly.
I did however allow him the courtesy of rapping my knuckles lightly against the sliding door.
âHey, you still alive in there?â I called lightly.
When there was no response, my heart leapt, and I attempted to force down the sudden anxiety trapping itself in my throat. I cracked my knuckles against the door again, then slowly slid it open. More than a little leery of seeming something I didnât want to see. Or admitting to myself that maybe it was something I did. The memory of our last parting surfaced unbidden to my thoughts, and I stubbornly pushed it away.
The bathing room beyond was empty. The waters rippled and gently gurgled with the natural flow of the water, but otherwise it was still. I might have been able to convince myself that the entire day had been a figment of my overactive imagination had it not been for the pile of soiled towels by the edge of the pool. I groaned internally, bustling in and peeking into the corners as if the behemoth man could have somehow managed to hide behind the potted plants. At least there didnât appear to be a trail of blood anywhere. I prayed to whomever was listening that the dolt hadnât deigned to leave the chambers.
âWhere are you, you idiot?â I grumbled, tucking my bundle under one arm and heading to the door at the opposite end.
âIn here.â Came the reply, and I nearly shook with relief.
He must have keener hearing than I thought. Or he had been listening for my return. The door to my bedroom was slightly cracked, and I shouldered it the rest of the way open, then spun to close it behind me. Using the motion as an excuse to steady myself as the sound of his deep voice seemed to have rattled me strangely.
âI do hope you arenât-â I started as I turned, then promptly squealed loudly in surprise, dumping the clothes, bandages, and salve unceremoniously to the floor as both hands shot up to cover my eyes.
âEh?â I heard the shuffle of his feet across the bare stone floor as he must have continued his own turn to face me. âIs something the matter?â
âWHERE ARE YOUR CLOTHES??â I nearly shrieked.
Though I kept my palms firmly clasped over my eyes, the previous momentary glimpse of the half-orcâs assured nudity was currently seared deep into my mindâs eye. The fine toned abdomen. The taut green buttocks, with a dimple above the top of each cheek in the small of his back. He must have washed his hair, for the long mohawk of growth had spilled over his skin like polished ebony in soft looking tendrils. Leading my eyes over his broad green shoulders. And when he had started to turn⊠the soft âvâ shape at the top of his hips leading down toâŠ
The sight (and now, memory of the sight) left my mouth decidedly dry and my lips refusing to work properly. I felt an unfamiliar twitch in my fingers as the urge to pull them apart and sneak another peek rushed through me. There was no way! No way any man should be that⊠I swallowed hard, shaking my head with my hands pressed so tightly to my face it almost hurt.
âYou said they were filthy, and inappropriate.â He reminded me matter-of-factly, and I could almost hear the shrug of those big shoulders. Big, broad, muscular shoulders-
âThat doesnât mean you should walk around NAKED!â I snapped, finally starting to come to my senses. I shifted my hands so that one covered both eyes, and crouched down in an attempt to blindly find what I had discarded in my panic.
âWhat was I to wear?â He replied. âYour drying cloths are tiny. I needed three just to-â
âI donât care!â I managed to find the clothes by groping about with my free hand, and stood. Tossing them towards the sound of his voice and hearing a disgruntled huff as they hit him. âJust put those on, quickly, before my breakfast makes a reappearance.â
Erramun gave an angry grumble, but I heard the shake and shuffle of cloth as he did. âI didnât know human stomachs were so sensitive.â His voice became muffled briefly as I assumed he pulled the shift over his head. âI always thought my mother was being dramatic when she scolded me for forgetting to dress.â
âIf your mother imparted any other wisdom to you regarding humans, I suggest now is the time you take it to heart.â I replied sourly. Careful to keep my palms firmly fastened over my eyes. Though the heat of my cheeks nearly burned me.
I was so focused on not looking, I didnât hear the soft scrape of his bare feet again as he moved forward. I jumped about a foot in the air as his hands suddenly came around my wrists. Gently pulling them free from my face. Leaving me suddenly face to face with a soft silk and cotton shirt, its untied collar just hinting at the toned chest I had been privy to moments before. I tried to ignore that memory, and fought through a sudden haze at the realization that his fingers were almost as gentle and soft as they were strong. And how close he currently stood to me. My heart skipped and I felt my breath catch in my throat as my head craned back to look up at him. He gave me a lopsided grin that had my knees feeling a little weak, and I felt him gently turn my hands in his. Until the backs of my hands rested in his palms and he could run his thumbs over the pads of my fingers.
âI am sorry, Gana,â He told me gently, âI did not mean to startle you so.â
 For a second, I couldnât find the air in my lungs to speak. I struggled for a moment, and saw those bright emerald green eyes of his flick about my face. Thoughtfully, perhaps⊠almost appreciatively. And the way he was studying my features suggested he had been meaning to do just that for some time now. Up close, with seemingly time to spare to linger on each inch. I felt the flames beneath each cheek rekindle, but was strangely frozen for another few staggered beats of my heart. Finally, I yanked my hands from his, quickly shaking my head again to dispel the moment. Stubbornly denying it had ever existed.
âIs the apology her wisdom or yours?â I quipped, pleased to find my sarcasm still had a sharp bite to it despite the swirling quality of my thoughts.
My heart nearly faltered again at his answering smile. âA little bit of both, I suppose.â
I scoffed, trying to clear my head as I waved my hand at him dismissively. âThen perhaps there is some hope for you after allâŠâ I took a step back, eager to put some space between us and hopefully regain a little more of my senses. âWhat are you even doing back here?â I put my hands on my hips. âI donât suppose your mother ever told you it is incredibly rude to snoop around a ladyâs chambers?â
âHmm. She may have raised that point once or twice.â He grinned again, turning to follow my progression as I stalked around him angrily. I crouched down briefly to gather up the remainders of my bundle from the floor. âBut you took longer than expected⊠And I was curious.â His head cocked to the side as he slowly followed me to the center of the room by the bed. âAre these the Princessâ rooms?â
I nearly dropped the jar and bandages again, spinning on him with the vial of healing salve in hand. âWhat makes you say that??â
He nodded to the corner. âThe jewels and such.â I followed his gaze to my vanity table, where I had left some never used jewelry as thoughtlessly as one might discard soiled clothes on a chair. âI do not think even human servants tend to have such things.â
âI never said I was a servant.â I reminded him sourly, then jerked my chin. âSit.â
âYou havenât said much of anything.â He shot back, but did as he was told and settled onto the chest at the foot of the bed.
âEventually you may just conclude that that is entirely by design.â I said, opening the jar as he rolled his shirt up on one side. I pretended not to notice the tautness of his flesh or the shape of his abdomen as I slowly spread some of the salve on his wound. It seemed to have mostly stopped bleeding, which was good. âYou may even come to remember that I am looking to get you out of here as quickly as I can. And the sooner that is the better.â
âDo I really disgust you so?â He asked, sounding bitter.
My eyes darted up to his face in surprise. And I got stuck in the quality of those emerald greens for a moment longer than I would ever admit. I adjusted my tongue in my mouth, forcing my eyes away from his finally and reaching for the pile of bandages I had brought.
â... You donât disgust me.â I admitted quietly.
He snorted, wincing slightly as I began to carefully apply first a clean square bandage, then the longer ones wrapped about him to hold it in place. It brought me uncomfortably close to him. I couldnât help but take in a breath next to his skin, and found the smell of him made my nostrils quiver. I was just surprised to find he didnât stink anymore, I assured myself silently. That was all. I had come to expect him to smell like dirt and blood, not this strangely pleasant smell he currently had. It meant nothing that I noticed it.
âYou donât seem to like me all that much.â He replied. âI am not sure what else it would be.â
I straightened, having secured the end of the bandage in place, and crossed my arms over my chest. âOh, obviously I must hate you then. That must be why, and it has nothing at all to do with the reason why you are even here in the first place.â I scoffed.
âEh?â
My eyes rolled, and I was grateful for it as I didnât have to watch him roll his shirt back down over his stomach again. The way his shoulders shifted and moved beneath the fabric wasnât at all fair.
âYou came here insistent that you would be marrying the Princess. Am I supposed to welcome you with open arms?â I placed my hands back on my hips and scowled at him. âPerhaps you assume that since you plan to marry her, that means you should be treated as a Prince?â
That warranted me a loud guffaw, and my eyes widened slightly in surprise. His crooked grin had my heart skipping, and I scoffed again in an attempt to dislodge it from my throat. The big orc stood, swaying for half a moment and forcing me back a step as he reached out to steady himself on the post beam of the bed. I eyed him warily, not too fond of the idea of being crushed by his bulk should he lose his balance and completely topple over. He managed to keep his feet however, and half staggered over to a full length mirror.
The clothes fit him surprisingly well, though it seemed that General Damjan was a bit narrower and lankier than he was. The sleeves of his cream colored shirt bunched up at his wrists, but you couldnât tell since the collar of the shirt was filled with soft ruffles and the style was of a looser fit. It draped lazily over his shoulders, clinging to his upper arms and chest as he moved, with a straight cut that had him looking even taller than before. His trousers, a dark brown, disappeared beneath the long hanging tails of the shirt, but hugged his thighs snuggly. The outside seam of each leg had a dash of lighter thread, accenting the length of his limbs, as well as their shape. I had to take a moment to adjust my gaze from those firm, muscular thighs of his before his emerald eyes noticed me ogling him from behind.
âI look⊠foolishâŠâ He grumbled.
I crossed my arms. âGood, you finally reflect your natural state then.â He snorted, turning this way and that and playing with the fabrics. I rolled my eyes again. âThe shirt is supposed to be tucked into the pants. You look like you just rolled out of bed.â
He glanced at me in the mirror, then back at his shirt. â... How?? These pants are too tight. There is no space!â
That had me laughing, despite myself. Certainly the goblins had an interesting sense of fashion, preferring aesthetics over functionality and comfort. Though I supposed the same could be said for some of the human court styles. Neither had put much thought into moving around. And based upon his previous attire, pants were not something the young orc was used to. My laugh petered out when I saw his lopsided grin waiting for me in the mirror. His whole face seemed a little brighter for it. I shook my head, unable to hide a lingering smile, and moved over to the bed.
âAlright, enough of that. I have someplace to be. And you should get some rest.â I told him as I adjusted the thick blankets and pillows. Peeling back a corner for him.
âYouâre leaving again?â
My eyes darted up to him, surprised to hear the tang of remorse in his words. I slapped the blankets a few times for good measure. Letting out an impatient sigh.
âYes, it may come as a shock to you, but I actually do have regular responsibilities outside of cleaning up errant wandering idiots.â I teased, straightening and taking a step back to allow him access to the bed. âPlus I have to see to your mare still.â
â... So I can stay?â
I groaned, pushing my wild hair back out of my face. Trying to ignore the odd pitter patter of my heart at the question. I gave him a once over, as if chewing on the thought. Certainly it was not because I was making excuses to prolong his company. That of course I found the half-orc taxing. There shouldnât be any question that I wanted him out of my life as soon as possible.
âI canât very well send you off until I know you arenât going to pass out in a ditch somewhere.â I told him. Making an effort to sound as though I was at least mildly chaffed with the idea. âSo yes, you oaf. You can stay.â I bit my lip, shuffling. â... For now.â
Erramun slowly walked over, sitting on the edge of the mattress. His eyes looked over the room again. I shuffled my skirts and turned to gather up a few things to manage the clutter a bit better. Suddenly very aware of the fact that I had a strange man in my personal chambers. At best it was highly improper. At worst, it was downright dangerous. Afterall, I had only known Erramun a few days, and yet let myself be locked up in my bedroom alone with him. If Niko found out, he might just have a stroke on the spot. Though he might remain upright long enough to run my visitor through with his sword first.
âWonât the Princess be cross that you are using her chambers to wash an orc?â He mused, tilting his head to one side.
âHalf-orc, you mean?â I teased, glad my back was to him so he didnât see my mouth twitch in amusement. âAnd I donât think sheâll mind much.â
âShe lets you use these rooms for yourself,â He reasoned, and I saw his nose twitch out the corner of my eye, âThe bed smells like you.â
I nearly tripped over my own feet. Tossing an armful of my things into a chest and closing it. I glanced at him briefly as I grabbed a small empty basket and put the remainder of the dressings and the jar of salve in it.
âStop smelling me. Itâs rude.â
He grinned. âI will try to breathe through my mouth then. Or would that be rude too?â
âIâm not sure youâre capable of being anything else.â I returned airly, looking around and considering my handiwork for a moment. âExcept perhaps a fool.â
Erramun chuckled, a sound that came from somewhere deep in his chest. I glance at him out the corner of my eye. âI hope the Princess will not think so.â
âDonât count on it.â
âYou are close with her then?â
I groaned. Well, it had been nearly a few minutes since the last mention of the Princess that time. âHonestly, do you ever think of anything else?â I grumbled. âMust be dull, revolving your life around marrying a girl youâve never met.â
âYou say it like I have a choice.â He grumbled right back.
I turned to him once more, the morose tone of his voice giving me pause. It seemed in stark contrast to the teasing lightness from before. The half-orc had his head bowed, his over defined brow scrunched. The long tendrils of his damp hair trailed around his face. I considered this for only a brief moment, returning my hands to my hips.
âDonât you?â He didnât look up at me at my words. I felt a tick of irritation at that. âYou are an orc, half or otherwise. You are not beholden to the whims of a court, or the expectations of your people. You do not have the same responsibility to put the welfare of others above your own freedom and happiness.â I glanced off to the side, my eyes drifting longingly to the window. âYou can wander under the open skies, should you so choose. You can see far off lands, go on adventures, take risks-â
âIf I want to be selfish, and ignore the suffering of my people.â He interrupted, his voice heated. âPerhaps everyone here is magically accepting, but at the border, being over six foot and having green skin is enough to get you harassed. If not worse.â
âAnd marrying a Princess will solve that?â I shot back, equally hot.
âIt will ease tensions.â He argued. âIt will prove that we are not savages. That we can make alliances-â
I threw up my hands exasperatedly. âEven if I had a year, I still wouldnât have enough time to point out all the flaws in your reasoning. And right now, I have to go collect my nieces and nephews.â I moved over to swipe a clean cloak from one of the hooks by the armoire. âYou stew in your own idiocy, or, preferably, sleep. So that perhaps I can have you out of my hair before it starts to turn grey.â I spun on him, leveling one stern finger at his face. âAnd donât even think about leaving this room.â
Erramun raised one brow at me, his thick lips pursing together around his tusks. Then his head tilted to the side, and that lopsided grin returned. It made my determination falter briefly, almost so much that I nearly took a step back in light of it.
âYou are quite fierce, Gana.â He mused. âIf the Princess is anything like you, I will be lucky.â
That had a sound heat rising to my cheeks, but I shook my head. Scoffing loudly. âYou are a fool and a half.â I grumbled, turning my back on him so he couldnât see the strange crash of emotions that fought their way across my face. âSingle minded and absolutely incorrigible.â
He snorted, sounding amused. âSomething else then. If I sleep in your bed, where will you sleep?âÂ
His words had me freezing in the doorway to the foyer. I tried to ignore the rapid speed of my pulse, swallowing heavily and shaking my head. Based upon the tone of his voice, I knew that stupid lopsided smile was still on his face. I replaced the heat of embarrassment at his implication with that of anger.
âPreferably just about anywhere else.â I snapped, then stormed out to the hall. Being sure to lock the door behind me.

aka Caleo uni au
Fic summary: Calypso starts studying at a new university, but to her annoyance her new flatmate is a loud mouthed mechanic who also likes to sneak his dog in whenever. But as she learns to know him better, she realizes they might have more in common than what she first thought. Eventually, even the darkest secrets come outâŠ
Chapter summary: At Waystation, pt 3/?
A/N:Â Chapter 30 already! This chapter was not an easy one to edit as I was insecure about a lot of things, but hey, it's out now and that's what matters, right? I am so aware things are progressing a bit slowly right now but I feel it's kind of 'necessary' to have a bit of down time before things start going down. (Not that I'm capable of writing actual drama.) Well, at least we'll find out a bit more about Leo's past in this chapter.

After breakfast Leo asked Calypso if she would like him to give her a tour around Waystation. She agreed, but Leo couldnât help but raise his eyebrow at his family members when Georgina asked if she could go with the flatmates and Leoâs mothers told her that they needed Georgieâs help in some Christmas chores.
âWhat?â Josephine asked innocently when she noticed Leo staring.
âI dunno, tĂa Jo. It just kinda seems like you donât want Georgie to hang out with us,â he stated bluntly.
âThatâs not accurate at all, Leo,â she denied. âIâd gladly let Georgina go with you but we really do need her help around here. Christmas isnât coming if we all just slack off, right, Emmie?â
âI agree, dear. I havenât evenâŠâ Emmieâs hesitance only deepened Leoâs suspicions. â...hmmm, taken care of our mistletoes yet.â
âMistletoes?â Leo crossed his arms over his chest, briefly daring to wonder what would happen if he and Calypso were under one of those plants at the same time. He shook his head to dispel such an idea.
âDidnât we agree that we donât need stuff like that? You donât even like Christmas!â
âI may agree that this holiday is way too commercial these days, but since Emmie has some mistletoes growing in her greenhouse anyway, I donât see why we wouldnât use them,â Jo commented. âItâs nice that Georgie gets to experience some of the old traditions even if we grownups donât care about them.â
âWhatever,â Leo rolled his eyes, knowing he wouldnât win that battle.
âUm, if you need extra hands,â Calypso joined the conversation, addressing Jo and Emmie, âI donât have to go with Leo. Iâd love to help too.â
Leo felt a twinge of disappointment because of Calypsoâs suggestion. His insecure side yelled that maybe he had misread Calypsoâs intentions all along.
âOh, no, no!â Emmie denied immediately. âYou are our guest; we want you to take it easy and enjoy your stay here. I bet Leoâs tour is a lot more fun than us peeling way too many potatoes and carrots for the casserole.â
âI wouldnât mind peeling potatoes,â Calypso mumbled but Leoâs mothers pretended they didnât even hear that. The flatmates simply had to accept that they wouldnât have a chaperone - except maybe Festus - on their tour.
Once the two of them were outside, Leoâs thoughts went back to the time when he had first arrived at Waystation. Back then, he had been only 15, having just escaped from his latest foster home, which had been located far away in New Mexico. His foster family there had hidden their opinion on him very badly, giving him sly remarks about his looks and telling him to speak clearer English even though Leoâs English had always been fine, thanks to his real mother allowing him to learn both Spanish and English as a small kid. They had also made him do the hard work such as carrying heavy loads while the other foster kid of the family got the easy tasks. And when he had come home from school with bad grades, the foster parents had commented: âwhy do we even bother with you?â
At some point Leo had simply had enough, and by selling some of the few belongings he had he had managed to gather just enough money for one plane ticket and so he flew to Indianapolis without telling anything to his foster family.
After living on the streets and successfully dodging the authorities for a couple of weeks, the police finally found him and contacted the local social workers. Thankfully, after Leo put all his convincing skills to use, they agreed to not send him back to New Mexico, instead finding him a new foster family nearby. Leo hadnât had high expectations because he had been in at least 6 different foster homes since his motherâs death and none of them had been a good match for him. Some had been abusive, some racist, some ignorant, some had had kids who were bullies, some had had alcohol issues⊠What had been common for them all was that none of them had treated him the way they should have.
That was why Leo had picked some bad habits too; he wanted to drown his feelings somehow and he ended up stealing small amounts of money from his foster family so he could buy alcohol from his older homeless âfriendsâ. He had hated how it made him feel afterwards, but it had been the only way he had known how to deal with his issues. At some point he had even had suicidal thoughts because the guilt and trauma from his childhood got so bad he woke up covered in sweat after the same old fire filled nightmare almost every night. And going from foster home to foster home and feeling like none of those people cared what he really did with his life definitely didnât help him regain his feeling of self worth. He had no future, no plans, no real friends or family and nowhere to go.
Luckily, during his worst phase in his last foster home someone from his homeless group mentioned having a relative in Indiana and that he was hoping to move there at some point in hopes of getting a new start for his life. That idea sparked something in Leoâs mind and when he started planning his big escape, Indianapolis was the first place that he thought of.
When he finally met Jo and Emmie, he was surprised. Seeing them spending time with their then 5-year-old adoptive daughter, he could tell that these women genuinely cared about the little girl and did everything for her wellbeing. Not only that, Jo was a mechanic just like Leoâs real mother and they had also other things in common. With some patience and showing that they cared, simply by making sure that Leo ate, rested and had something to do with his time other than dwelling on his sad past, they eventually won him over. And when Leo discovered thanks to Joâs help that he himself had the skills to become a mechanic someday as well, he finally had a goal to reach and studying wasnât quite as big a struggle for him anymore.
Soon, however, Leo became afraid that Jo and Emmie wouldnât want to keep him around because he still had some bad days when he literally had to be dragged from his bed. He was also worried that maybe the women had heard what he had done in his past and were silently judging him. Instead, they surprised him by telling him that they wanted to officially adopt him much like Georgina because he was a part of their family now. As an added bonus they assigned him for therapy sessions, which really helped and the days when he didnât want to do anything became less and less. Leo knew he was still a work in progress but this family had helped him so much and he had found his purpose, his home, at Waystation.
Calypso had naturally noticed Leoâs silence so eventually she asked:
âAre you OK? Youâre being unusually quiet.â
âOh, yeah, just dandy!â Leo exclaimed, trying to act more like his usual self. âI was just thinking about the times when I first moved in here.â
âReally? Do you want to tell me more about that?â Calypso asked curiously.
âI guess it wonât hurt.â Leo shrugged. âI donât remember if Iâve told you that I was in a lot of foster homes before I got here. Well, my last foster parents were really shitty people and I was this close to⊠I dunno, doing something desperate. So I decided to just leave and ended up here in Indianapolis. I, um, was homeless for a bit but when the social workers got me into their hands they found me a new family, Jo and Emmie. At first they were supposed to only foster me for a time being but they ended up adopting me instead. I⊠havenât told this to anyone, but they probably saved my life by doing that. The Leo from that time was far from the Super-Sized McSizzle that I am now,â he attempted to joke, but Calypso ignored that. Instead, she said:
âIâm sorry you had to go through that⊠but Iâm glad you opened up about it to me.â Leoâs heart did an extra jump when he saw Calypso smiling at him supportingly. He would never get used to that. âAnd Iâm glad Jo and Emmie adopted you.â
âYeah, me too⊠When I first saw the place I was like, âwow, I wish I could stay hereâ. Obviously the people here are awesome - they are my family - but that wasnât the only thing the 15-year-old me cared about. The cars and other machines Jo was fixing? So cool. I had only seen something like that at my childhood home and the nostalgia hit me like âboomâ right away.â
âI should have known it was the machines that convinced you to stay here,â Calypso teased, but Leo knew her already too well to get provoked by that.
âNah. I mean, theyâre neat and all, but Jo and Emmie did the actual convincing.â
âOkay, I believe you. So, was Joâs garage what made you want to become a mechanical engineer?â Calypso asked.
âI guess the spark was always there but it took me a while to convince myself that I should try to pursue that goal. But when I started going to school again regularly â long story, donât ask â I noticed that the sciences were easy for me, I was also decent enough at drawing â which of course helps with the blueprints and stuff â and Jo let me try fixing some of the simpler machines she had and turned out I wasnât half bad. It was Jo and Emmie who kept pushing me to apply for the uni, though, because they believed in me more than I did. Iâm thankful that they did it but⊠sometimes I still doubt...â Leo hadnât talked about his insecurities even to his adoptive mothers so he felt that the fact that he was able to open up about it to Calypso was a big deal.
âIâve seen you fix countless items,â Calypso said slowly. âIâve noticed that youâre always⊠so different when youâre fiddling with your machines. More relaxed. Calmer. Surer of what you do. And your eyes sparkle and you hum some old school rock song while you work and I can just tell that youâre exactly where youâre supposed to be.â
Leo had to avert his eyes from her because he was afraid he would do something stupid like cry if he looked at her too long in that moment. No matter how encouraging his family, friends and the therapist were⊠it was still hard to get used to the compliments. And if he was honest to himself, he probably valued Calypsoâs opinion more than anyone elseâs at that point.
âWow⊠umm⊠I donât know how to answer thatâŠâ He rubbed the back of his neck.
âA simple thank you would probably do,â Calypso replied. âBut know that I mean what I say. Now, how about you show me that famous garage?â
Leo did as he was told. He introduced Calypso to all the tools and machinery they used to fix whatever item the customer happened to bring in. He had a feeling that Calypso probably didnât have any idea what he was talking about half the time because he tended to get very technical with the terms when he got excited, but she still seemed content listening to him. At least she wasnât telling him to stop, which was definitely a plus.
To Leoâs surprise, Calypso went to the table where he and Jo used to draw their blueprints and asked him if she could see how he did it because she hadnât seen his blueprints before. He complied, taking a pencil and a piece of blank paper from the stack and looking at Calypso questioningly.
âWhat do you want me to draw, then? I may have some experience on this but even I need some ideas firstâŠâ
âYou can draw whatever you like. How about Festus?â Calypso requested.
âFestus?â Leo tapped the pencil against his chin for a moment, considering Calypsoâs request. âHmm, as you wish, Sunshine.â
He started making fast, swift motions on the paper and it didnât take him very long to finish the sketch. Sure, the lines were a bit rough, but Calypso told him she was very impressed by how accurately he remembered even the little details, such as a dark spot on Festusâ back, how the tail curved when he was happy, and how he was missing a tiny piece of the tip of his left ear.
Leo felt a bit embarrassed by the praise. âIt just comes with me hanging out with him so much. Nothing more to it, really.â He looked at the sketch for a moment. âHold on, I feel like this is missing something. Can you look towards that window for a moment?â
âWhat, why?â Calypso asked, but turned anyway.
âJust adding something real quick,â Leo replied and started sketching again. He wondered if it was the lighting of the room but he thought Calypsoâs cheeks seemed a bit darker than usual and she kept looking at the floor shyly. When he realized that heâd probably feel the same way if she was drawing him, he himself got flustered and decided to try to finish the drawing as quickly as possible. Within minutes he had drawn her next to Festus, playing with him, wearing the same holiday sweater and jeans she currently was.
âCan I see?â Calypso asked.
âUh, yeah, sure.â Leo gave the picture to her. âItâs not detailed or anything but I tried.â
Calypso kept staring at it for a moment. âLeo⊠this looks great! I mean, I donât think I am that pretty but I am quite amazed that you managed to do this that fast!â
Leo wanted to say that there was no way the picture did her justice but he knew that would be a never ending debate so instead he told her: âItâs the experience, Sunshine. When you draw hundreds of blueprints you learn to be fast.â
Calypso turned her attention to the drawing again. âCan I get it?â she asked after a while.
âWhy?â
âBecause Festus looks cute, you weirdo. Thatâs a good enough reason, right?â
âFine, you can have it. Iâm not sure where Iâd put it anyway.â Leo shrugged. He wasnât sure why Calypso possibly hanging the picture on her wall made him feel a bit weird. In a good way, though.
Once the two of them left the garage, Leo pointed at a smaller building next to the âmainâ one. A couple of pointy ears were peeking from the upstairs windows. âThatâs where our foster animals live. I think the kid me wished on some level that I could have a pet but my mom could never afford one⊠but Jo and Emmie have been fostering rescue cats and dogs even before I got here. One of them was Festusâ mum; she was pregnant when she arrived here. When she had her puppies, I noticed that one of them was a bit of an outsider and we instantly formed a bond. Jo and Emmie allowed him to stay here even though he sure would have had adopters.â
âThat was really sweet of them,â Calypso commented. âCan we see whoâs in there right now?â
âSure but we should probably let Emmie know about it because sheâs pretty strict about who can go in. She may ask us to wear âbunny suitsâ; some of the animals may be sick and we donât wanna spread the bugs around.â
âNo problem, letâs go see her then.â
When Emmie heard what Leo and Calypso were about to do, she promised to stop her Christmas chores for a while so she could show them (mainly Calypso) around in the rescue house. Currently she was fostering two young puppies who had been found on the streets without their mother, a mother cat with her 4 kittens who were getting close to their adoption age, and an older cat with some kidney issues who seemed to however adore the little kittens.
Leo was watching Calypsoâs reactions closely as Emmie was introducing her to the kittens. Soon one of the braver kittens climbed on the girlâs lap, giving her a tiny âmeowâ and then started nuzzling against her sleeve.
âAww, look Leo! He loves me,â Calypso exclaimed, smiling widely as the kitten started purring loudly on her lap while she pet him. âHeâs not the only one,â Leo thought in his mind. Aloud he asked: âWhy do you sound so surprised?â
âI guess because Iâve never really handled cats so I didnât know how theyâd react to meâŠâ Calypso noted more seriously. But then the happiness returned to her face. âYou know, this one reminds me of you! He also has long, black hair like you and fierce eyes.â
âFierce?â Leo raised his eyebrow. âThatâs what you think of me?â
Calypso seemed to want to explain but with Emmie in the room she didnât go to details. âUm, maybe? Hey, look! Another one is coming!â
This time a small ginger kitten was approaching her and Calypso extended her arm so the kitten could sniff her. The group kept making small talk about the cats in the room and continued snuggling them, but Leoâs eyes were on Calypso the whole time. He could see how happy she was about such a simple thing as kittens and it made him feel lighter, warmer again, even though he had just remembered some very bad times a few moments earlier. Maybe all of it had been meant to happen, he wondered briefly. After all, it led him here, to his family⊠and Calypso.

Midoriya Izuku was standing in front of the invention room with his hero costume case because he broke his shoes once again. He is afraid to look at your face, but he needs to face you. Perhaps he isnât ready to face you yet. He was about to turn around to walk away to ask Mei to fix his shoes instead. To only get startled by the sliding door opening to reveal Misaka.Â
âOh! Midoriya. What may I help you?â Misaka calmly gave off the customer service voice along with a smile.Â
Midoriya couldnât speak properly to the only rush through his word which leads it to be a scrambled mess.Â
Misakaâs eye twitches in annoyance. She could never really deal with his random rambles. She looks on both sides of the hallway before grabbing his collar and yanking him inside. Midoriya was about to fall on his face due to the sudden pull into the room. She walks away from him to sit down on her chair to continue working on Kirishima shoulder designs, after testing it would be sustainable enough against Kirishima unbreakable form without shattering into pieces from her previous prototypes.Â
She is just ignoring his presence until he learns how to speak. She is already irritated by him how Midoriya is not even standing up for (Name), her best friend. His friends are speaking to her best friend with hurtful words that would break anyone down especially under his watch is unacceptable. A screwdriver floats towards her which reminded him of his mother's quirk.Â
Midoriya gulps down his saliva, sensing tension in the air and looks over to your desk to find it surprisingly neat and cleaned as if it hasnât been touched for a few days. It's an unusual sight to see it so organized compared to the times he has been in here. His eyes wander off to Misaka's side of the room to see her blueprints on the cardboard. He does recall that you did mention that Misaka switched with Hatsume Mei because her room was a lot closer to the inventory room.Â
The blueprints of her designs and items for Kirishima Eijirou upgraded costume pinned on the cardboard. She has a mannequin that was holding fabric that could be for his lower cape. In front of her were pauldrons blueprints with the design details. Misaka was adding the details on his pauldrons and messing with internal parts that seem to contain wires.Â
âItâs coming out very well, Misaka.â Midoriya tries to break the tension in the air, before speaking for the real reason for his trip here. âCould you perhaps fix my shoes?â Â
Misaka glances over to him and walks over to him to hastily take the case from him to evaluate the damage. She did catch his eyes looking over to your working station earlier.Â
âShe is banned from using this room for fighting one of your fangirls along with damaged property.âÂ
Misaka answers without him saying it out loud and takes the black metal shoes off his case to only collapse into different small pieces. Both of them just stare at the floor where the metal pieces collapsed into smaller pieces. âWell then. I could make a replica for you. It might be ready in the late afternoon tomorrow, b-âÂ
Midoriya brims up at the news with a small smile instead of his usual big grins. âThank you!âÂ
She stops to turn to face him. âBut!â
She stares closes the case hastily, before turning her blue eyes back into his green eyes. âDo you know about the rumors going around about (Name)?âÂ
Midoriya was taken back at the question but narrowed his eyebrows. âI only know about the check, but it turns out to be true.âÂ
Midoriya unconsciously flinches recalling the rumor was true and all the emotions that he has been pushing down resurface at once. She evacuates his body language and his eyes to see he is telling the truth. He seems to hang on by accepting the fact that your relationship was building on the bride.Â
âWell, your friends are belittling (name) by telling her. She is a whore to slut because of the rumors going around. They are getting dramatized and getting out of hand. The rumors are getting worse every passing day. Unless you set it straight. It would calm down the rumors.â She carefully watches his body language and his eyes.Â
From the dark lines underneath his eyes and more messy hair than usual. It seems he has been wrecked as well. The evidence is physical that he hasnât been sleeping very well. Midoriya hasn't been able to sleep for the past couple of days due to getting nightmares repeatedly.Â
But from his expression, he didnât know at all, filled with shock, and a mixture of surprise was written all over his face. His eyes were wide open and his mouth agape. Before he closes his mouth before licking them and gulping down his saliva. âI havenât been paying attention of late.â
âI have been in mind all day and night,â He thought to himself.Â
His demons belittling why him and losing destroying himself confidence. The only time he can distract himself is by burying himself in schoolwork and training to quiet down that voice in his head. The other times, he unconsciously is blocking the world around him which makes his friends and classmates worry about him since he has been a less talkative and energetic ball of energy who is an excellent observer and analyzing at hand.Â
Aizawa asks him to go to the counselor's office today or tomorrow. He knows that Aizawa is worried about him to personally ask him to look for help. Â
His fingers fidget with the side of his tie as he licks his dry lips to confess.âI have mostly been in my world-â
âYou have been in your mind. Midoriya. You are being your own worst enemy. Overthinking to thinking the worst possibilities. That's what you usually do.â Misaka interrupts him, before walking into your work station.Â
She opens a drawer to go through it to see your blueprint on what your design to offer to Midoriya. She stares at it for a second before taking it out and reaching underneath the table to pull out brown boxes that contain two metal cases with one of them has a red ribbon. She places the blueprint inside and holds out to him if only he wants to accept.Â
â[Name] might murder me for giving this to you. Its new equipment that they overworked themselves making sure this gift to you would be on time. But you knowâŠ. This would have been a future design blueprint. Just take a look and give those babies a try.â
Midoriya didnât know what to say. His throats were dried up but his eyes landed on a red envelope attached to the metal case with red ribbon. It was possible the anniversary gift that she would have given him today. He forgot today was their anniversary before all this happened. They had plans but everything changed. He needed space and time to think. Y/N gave him the space that he asked and respected his decision.Â
But the curiosity is killing him wanting to know what they are inside those metal cases. He unconsciously reaches over to grab onto the box to find it surprising a little heavy.Â
âTake them and think would someone go through deep ends to create something so accurate for your liking and safety if they didnât care about you. If you think you donât want to accept it, you can go back and return them to me. I will have your replacements here waiting for you.â Misaka light heart comments.Â
Midoriya looks up from the box to look into her eyes. âThank you.â

The day before getting emotional after school, surprisingly you had a wonderful time with the loudmouth student from Class A-3, Bakugou Katsuki. He had surprisingly cheered you up with some food and fun time at the arcade. It was memorable and the most fun you had ever experienced in an arcade. The two of you were being competitive trying to beat each other's scores.Â
You did realize in his way, he was distracting you from what happened the day before.
âDonât let those extras get into your head. The only person you need to approve is yourself.â Bakugou advises while pointing at you with his chopsticks.Â
Your eyes had widened shows bewildered at his words as if he was speaking from experience, once his words sucked in which brought a wide grin on your lips.Â
âThank you.â Your eyes were starting to shine like before the incident happened with the rumors. Your eyes are a portal to how you feel.Â
Bakugou rolls his eyes, âYou should know this by now. Extra's opinions shouldnât matter.âÂ
He knew you were hurting inside while putting on a strong face in front of everyone. But everyone has their limits by putting on that armor to make people intimate from messing with you. He knows it very well.Â
As he refused for you to pay for the dinner bill to pay him back from playing in the arcade. You know arcades are not cheap but expensive. However, he beat you from paying by taking his credit card before you could.Â
âSave that money for your mouth-â He exclaims calmly.Â
âBakugou, that's a lot of money. Let m-.â You tried to reason with him, but he continues to shoot you down.Â
âItâs fine. Donât worry about it. Get it through your thick brain!â Bakugou slashing out, clearly getting irritated by you bugging him about paying him back. He clearly refuses to accept your money. Â
At the end of the day, you were conflicted about how to feel about Bakugou since you saw another side of Bakugou that you havenât seen until now. It's like Kirishima said to you before when you asked for Bakugou help for the gloves that you created for Midoriya.Â
âHe has a good heart, he just roughs around the edges. Give him time, he will get comfortable with you.âÂ
You had witnessed what Kirishima was talking about yesterday. Bakugou has a different way of showing he cares. However what caught you off guard when he had walked you back to your dorms like your bodyguard intimidating any students from looking over to you.Â
You turn around in front of the steps of your dorm to thank him. âThank you for everything. Bakugou.âÂ
Bakugou simply nods, like typical behavior for him. When you were turning around to walk up the stairs. He had grasped your wrist stopping you at your tracks.Â
âYou can call me. Katsuki, only if you want to... Have a nice night.â He lets go from your wrist.Â
You were shocked that Bakugou even suggested it, but knew it's a big deal for him to permit him to call him by his first name. It could mean numerous things, but that is the moment you thought. He trusts you.Â
Once you had sucked in his words, you only smiled back at him.
âI will be taking up that offer. Good night, Katsuki!âÂ
Unknown to you, Bakugoug Katsuki could feel his heart skip a beat from hearing your voice calling him by his first name. He couldnât explain it, but it makes him feel weird in a way that is not normal for him.Â
A small smile curls up to his lips while he was walking back to his dorms while recalling what happened that afternoon. He did have a lot of fun playing video games with you in an attempt to distract you from what is happening in school.Â
He does care about you but is unsure why he is feeling this sort of way ever since the two of you started working together for your project of gloves. He has gotten comfortable with your presence more than he would like to admit.Â
Perhaps, he has a crush on youâŠ.
It canât beâŠ, right?
