Omg I know this one
Okay so they had Nathan Hauritz, Xavier Doherty (who lasted quite awhile until I think KP tore him to shreds) then Michael Beer (who lasted two seconds before the entire England team tore him to shreds and he popped up in big bash for a decent amount of time until Finch tore him to shreds)
Then in about 2013, they just thought stuff it, if we can't get one that spins like Warnie, what about we get one that looks like Warnie and they wheeled out a young boy with bleached hair taking Nick Riewoldt marks on the boundary in T20 matches and
That didn't last long, I think Lyon came along shortly after and the selectors clung him like a barnacle on a ship "please save us, we'll market you as a goat, the greatest off spinner of all time, don't tell anyone there's no other off spinners around"
The Warnie lookalike reared his less bleached head a few years later as more of a Bradman clone and the Test team was set.
#Laura reads 100 funniest moments of Australian cricket#There i wrote the chapter#do i have to read it#no but can i go on hard quiz with the expert subject of 'the post Warnie pre-Lyon era'#that was my era#i was just getting into cricket right as Warnie and mcgrath retired (bad timing i know) so i was there i was present through all of it#maxi could've debuted around that era I'm not sure#maxi was never considered the way Smith was though#i don't know where Smith came from and he was selected purely for bowling.....#for like two seconds#he stayed around at t20 and ODI levels though and batted really well and eventually was put back in the test team as a batter

Izuku isn’t always amazing at things on the first try, while Katsuki on the other hand seems to catch on to everything so quickly and with such ease. Perfectionism at least is a quality that they both share, so even when Izuku fails in the beginning, he refuses to quit until he can do it with his eyes closed. Breaking his fingers, breaking his arms, breaking the plethora of bones in his body trying to master his quirk was easy, because the drive to make the quirk his own was such a powerful motivator. Well, maybe not easy, but the motivation deep within his core truly was the biggest push he needed.
Staying up all hours of the night studying for exams, spending hours upon hours in the gym to perfect his body to handle his quirk and whatever else comes his way, and attempting to keep a steady and healthy diet are mindless tasks now, ingrained in his blood and expertly learned and honed.
Which is why, Izuku thinks as his hands slip underneath Katsuki’s tank top, this particular task is so…. daunting.
They’re still in the new stages of dating, slowly melting away all of the awkwardness of first kisses and hands touching hands, and even though it’s only been a few months, Izuku is frustrated that he’s not an expert at Katsuki’s body yet. He’s stupidly determined to change that.
“Izuku,” Katsuki grumbles from his position on the bed, sprawled flat on his back with his notebook held up in front of his face, “Cut it out. We literally graduate in a fuckin’ month, we have to study for our final exams.”
Izuku swallows thickly from his place hovered over the blonde, his hand pausing where it’s pressed over Katsuki’s stomach. “We’ve been studying for hours, Kacchan.”
Katsuki scoffs, “And? You gonna tell me if I sit you down right now and quiz you, you’ll ace every subject I throw at ya?”
Izuku pouts. “It’s not good to cram too hard. Can we just take a break?”
“And do what?” Katsuki replies mindlessly, going back to flipping through his notebook.
Izuku slides his hand higher, Katsuki’s tank getting bunched up further until his pink nipples are exposed to the warm air in the dorm room. Katsuki shifts a bit, but doesn’t push him away. He also doesn’t put down his notebook either, so Izuku bites his lip and takes it as a green light.
Katsuki’s body is something out of Izuku’s wet dreams, really, and after they got together, once Izuku was allowed to touch, he decided to make it his new mission to figure out exactly all of the ways to make Katsuki tick.
He’s already discovered the spot behind Katsuki’s ear that makes him gasp, the spot right in the dip of his throat that, when Izuku latches on and sucks, causes Katsuki’s fingers to spasm and his breath to stutter. He’s figured out that Katsuki doesn’t really like the back of his neck touched, but he loves when Izuku drags his nails sharply down his spine when they are kissing.
He’s honestly discovered a lot about his boyfriend’s body, but there’s so much territory that’s currently unexplored, and it’s driving Izuku mad.
They haven’t really gone past making out and hand jobs, and Izuku tries not to get too handsy since he’s not really sure what kind of boundaries there are at this new, fresh stage in their relationship, but Izuku’s been watching. He’s been analyzing, calculating, and watching. He notices how Katuski’s breath hitches when he’s cold and his shirt rubs against his chest, nipples hard and poking out beneath the fabric. He’s noticed how Katsuki’s hips twitch up when they’re making out on his bed and Izuku’s hands drag up his chest, over his pecks.
It’s time to test his theory, and see what kind of reactions Katsuki will give him. So Izuku can see if this is another discovery he can add to his ever-growing list of everything Kacchan.
Izuku situates himself so he’s straddling Katsuki’s thighs, and though he can’t see the blonde’s face behind his notebook, he sees how Katsuki’s fingers clutch at the pages just a bit tighter. Izuku has his tank top bunched all the way up to his armpits now, pale muscular torso on full display, and Izuku’s mouth nearly waters as he zeros in on those cute pink nipples, just begging to be touched.
He takes it slow, dragging both hands up along the curve of Katsuki’s waist, and at the first brush of his thumbs against his nipples, Katsuki jerks so hard he drops his notebook. The pages flutter as it bounces off the bed and onto the floor, and now Izuku can fully see how pink Katsuki’s cheeks have become.
Oh, okay. Yeah, Izuku is going to get a lot of research done tonight. Katsuki is his favorite subject, afterall.
“Izuku,” Katsuki growls, low and quiet, almost like a warning. Izuku happily ignores him, thumbing his nipples a bit more firmly this time, and when his nail catches against the skin, Katsuki straight up squeaks.
“Jesus - calm down,” he manages to grit out through his teeth, but his hands have come down to clutch at Izuku’s thighs, and his gaze has darkened the way it always does before they fool around.
“Have you ever had your nipples played with before, Kacchan?” Izuku asks quietly, massaging his pecs with large, calloused hands.
“Don’t ask stupid questions,” Katsuki snaps, and then softer, quieter, “You… you know you're my fuckin’ first. Or whatever.”
First kiss, first boyfriend, first love - Izuku feels his heart swell that’s he’s managed to collect so many things from Kacchan. It makes him so happy his heart could very well burst.
But - first, he needs to focus. Katsuki’s eyeing him curiously, and so Izuku settles more firmly on his hips before gently, so gently, fluttering his fingers over the sensitive nubs.
“What - ah, f-fuck,” Katsuki chokes out, and the startled laugh that escapes his lips makes Izuku pause.
“Sensitive?” Izuku asks with delight, because he knew deep down they were, but he didn’t know that Katsuki’s chest would also be ticklish.
“Just - do it harder,” Katsuki grumbles out, not meeting Izuku’s gaze. “None of that gentle shit.”
Izuku happily ignores him yet again, scraping his nails feather light around the pink buds until Katsuki’s full on squirming beneath him, lips twitching on a smile as he tries not to laugh. His hands dart up to grab Izuku’s wrists, but Izuku is quicker, snatching the blonde’s hands up in one of his own and pinning them above Katsuki’s head. Izuku’s hand is large, and able to wrap completely around both of Katsuki’s wrists to keep him in place, which is nice because it allows him to have a free hand to continue his exploration.
“Are your nipples ticklish, Kacchan?”
“No - ”
His words are cut off with a gasp when Izuku leans down, flicking the tip of a tongue gently across his left nipple, and Katsuki’s back arches up, his body trembling as he chokes on a giggle - but then moans when Izuku sucks on the bud firmly.
“Ah - mmm,” Katsuki moans, and Izuku notices his cock throbbing in his sweatpants.
“You’re so cute,” Izuku teases, enjoying the way Katsuki’s cheeks flush at the compliment. He’s still firmly holding Katsuki’s wrists above his head, and he uses his free hand to trace his fingers softly along the side of Katsuki’s chest, squeezing his pec before dipping dangerously into the hollow of his underarm. That has Katsuki snorting softly around a surprised laugh, and Izuku notes with glee that his hips grind up at the same time.
Oh, he likes this? Izuku mentally notes that in his head.
“Izuku - fuck cut it out!” Katsuki’s voice is shaky, his head turned to hide in his shoulder as Izuku continues to drag his fingers teasingly across his chest, tickling at his nipples, the sides of his ribs, dipping into his armpit before coming back to those pert, hard, sensitive nipples. Izuku can feel Katuki’s cock pulse, his hips grinding up unconsciously.
“I wonder if you can come like this,” Izuku muses, “I wonder - how would a feather feel? If I just… tied you up, tickled your nipples for hours until you couldn’t take it anymore. They’re really sensitive, huh?”
“Shut - sh-shut up.”
“Hm - we don’t have any feathers - oh!” Izuku exclaims, releasing Katsuki’s wrists to lean over, digging around in the bedside drawer before pulling out a small vibrator they like to play with occasionally. Izuku’s only used it on their cocks before, but he’s so curious -
“Don’t you dare,” Katsuki groans.
“Hold onto the headboard,” Izuku commands softly, and Katsuki swallows and does as he’s told.
When he turns it on, Katsuki visibly tenses up, his gaze growing dark, and when Izuku gently grazes his nipple, Katsuki’s entire body arches up, his arms shooting down to shove the toy away as he shrieks.
“Oh my g - f-fuck!”
It’s like music to Izuku’s ears, the strained laughter and desperate gasp that the blonde lets out.
“Arms up, Kacchan.”
He grumbles but does as he’s told, fingers gripping the headboard so hard it creaks, and he bites his lip as Izuku lowers the setting on the vibrator before pressing it back to his nipple. The reaction is instant, Katsuki wriggling aggressively underneath Izuku, and finally after a few moments, Izuku hears little broken giggles from Katsuki’s mouth. His eyes are squeezed shut, beads of sweat popping up on his forehead, and when Izuku uses his other hand to pinch and roll his other nipple, the blonde cries out a shaky moan.
“Ah - ahah - Izuku it’s - fuck, I c-can’t - ”
“Does it tickle?”
Katsuki’s face burns. “Fuck off - yes, ahahah! You fuckin’ asshole - !”
“Does it feel good?”
Izuku rolls his hips down, grinding their arousals together, watching at Katsuki’s mouth parts and eyelids flutter with pleasure. He switches the vibrator to the other nipple, and darts back down to flick his tongue ticklishly over the other one. Katsuki’s shaking violently, as if his body has no idea how to handle the sensations, and when Izuku thumbs the vibrator up to a higher setting, he nearly groans at the shriek of laughter that fills the room.
“God - you drive me crazy,” Izuku groans, “You’re so cute, I can’t believe your nipples are so sensitive.”
“I c-can’t help it,” Katsuki whines, and his fingers are turning white with how hard he’s trying to keep his arms up. When Izuku drags his fingers back into the dip of Katsuki’s armpit though, the blonde can’t hold out any longer, and his arms dart down to grip Izuku’s wrists. The action simultaneously causes the vibrator to press harder onto his nipple, and Izuku bites his lip, drunk off of the moans and laughter coming out of his boyfriend’s mouth as he squirms helplessly against the bed.
“Oh - nng - Izuku, Izuku, I’m - ahahah, g-gonna -!”
“You gonna come like this?” Izuku says in a low, deep voice as he grinds harder against Katsuki’s lap. His fingers are trapped now in Katsuki’s underarm, fingers fluttering sporadically as he circles the vibrator torturously over a nipple. This time, when he darts down to lick, bite, suck at the other nipple, Katsuki screams, gasping on a sob as broken laughter forces its way out. It’s so much, too much, but Izuku’s feeling mean, so he hums against sweat-damp skin as he flicks the vibrator to the highest setting, pressing it right over the sensitive bud.
Katsuki’s covering his face now, embarrassed tears leaking out from under his trembling palms, and with one last roll of his hips, he’s coming, body going taut like a live wire as Izuku tickles and licks him through his orgasm.
“Stop - st-stop,” Katsuki gasps, and Izuku tosses the vibrator to the side in order to bring both hands to Katsuki’s chest, teasing those cute nipples, grazing down his sides, pinching at his hips and trailing back up again to squeeze his pecks as he feels the blonde’s cock twitch and throb, his sweatpants growing damp through his release. Katsuki paws at him weakly, tiredly giggling and whining as the overstimulation short circuits his brain.
“Ahaha - ah, p-please,” Katsuki writhes, clutching at the front of Izuku’s shirt as the boy leans down, kissing and nipping up the side of his neck. Katsuki’s strained laughter is right in his ear now, and Izuku groans loudly as he brings a hand down to squeeze his own cock.
“Just - fuck, just a little more, Kacchan, you can take it, right?”
It’s less of a question and more of a demand. Izuku pants wetly into Katsuki’s neck, one hand rolling a nipple between his fingers as his other squeezes his own arousal, and finally, when Katsuki’s sobbing and babbling nonsense into his ear, Izuku finally comes with a loud groan, pressing his forehead to Katsuki’s temple as he rides out his orgasm.
“Jesus - fuckin’ quit it,” Katsuki whines, finally batting away the hand that’s still teasing his oversensitive nipples. Izuku mumbles out a half-hearted apology and sits up, smoothing his palms firmly over Katsuki’s chest to soothe the blonde’s trembling nerves. After a few moments of catching their breath, Katsuki’s eyes flutter open, and he looks utterly debauched.
“Holy crap,” Izuku mumbles, leaning down to kiss the blonde deeply, cupping his face in large hands and wiping his tear tracks away with his thumbs. He has so much content to add to his Kacchan folder now.
“So much for a break,” Katsuki grumbles, shoving Izuku off of him and splaying his limbs out tiredly. “Now I need a goddamn nap, you fuckin’ menace.”
“Sorry?” Izuku offers, but they both know he’s not actually sorry at all. “I didn’t know your nipples were so - ”
He’s cut off when Katsuki shoves a hand in his face, his cheeks glowing pink. “Shut up, oh my god.”
“Kacchan’s so cute,” Izuku coos, voice muffled beneath his boyfriend’s palm, “I wonder where else Kacchan is sensitive?”
Katsuki just groans loudly and shoves a pillow aggressively over his face to hide his blush.
God, Izuku is going to be the death of him, he swears.

AOT Headcanons
I’ve been thinking of posting some of my headcanons and other shit here a bit more. I’m much more active on other platforms, but figured, why not?
So have something I threw together at... I dunno, maybe 3am Monday morning? :)
Warnings: None that I am aware of.
Includes: Eren Jaeger, Armin Arlert, Levi Ackerman, Erwin Smith, Hanji Zoe, Reiner Braun (At present, maybe more added at a later date.)
AOT Characters as Study Buddies:
Eren Jaeger:·
Do not expect this boy to remember that he agreed to study with you. He could have agreed to study with you just a few hours ago, and would forget. He needs regular reminders.
Remind him a couple of days before, the day before, on the day, during lunch and definitely make sure you text him after school.
Is always late.
He starts off really focused. Pulls out his books and notes and is eager to help.
But he also gets very easily distracted.
Will often check his phone. It’s a really bad habit he can’t seem to control. Whether it’s just checking the time or clearing notifications, expect his phone to be in his hand at least 60% of the time. Clearing notifications often leads to him scrolling through social media, sending snaps or replying to texts too.
Will always involve you, telling you why he is laughing, showing the funny video or meme he has found or explaining a conversation he is having.
It’s entertaining, but not exactly the reason you are here...
He doesn’t have a preference of where he studies, he is pretty content anywhere, but if you go to his place, he will frequently bring in snacks or order pizza. Also is much more easily distracted when at home.
His attention span isn’t great, and although he loves the idea of being helpful and studying with you, he gets bored quickly.
Can also get confused with his own notes.
Will often try and get you to call an end to the study session rather than do it himself. It makes him feel accomplished that way; like he has done his job and you are the one who has had enough. Will often groan things like:
“Are we done yet?”
“My head/back/wrist/eyes hurt.”
Occasionally he will suggest ‘taking a break’, but once that has been agreed to, it is pretty much the end of studying for the rest of the night.
Likes to try and make studying as fun as possible. Bright colours, highlighting, bubble diagrams, sticky notes. You best believe his version of pop quiz is to write random answers on a sticky note and stick it to your forehead and then get you to ask questions until you get the answer right.
Will definitely reward you with a kiss when you finally get it right.
Sometimes leaves sticky notes in your book of ‘motivational quotes' to make you smile when you eventually come across them.
Armin Arlert:-
By far, the most committed study buddy you could have hoped for.
You have weekly study sessions at the library every Friday after school.
Armin is always there before you, fully prepared; books laid out neatly on the table. Sometimes he even starts his homework while waiting for you.
Is very much a fan of making a little itinerary of things you are going to work through on the day.
Doesn’t mind odd conversation but is an expert at getting you back on the subject at hand. He can often even relate whatever you’ve said back to the topic... although sometimes it doesn’t make sense. But it’s still funny and endearing.
“You know who else thought Mrs Bratton was a bitch? William Shakespeare.”
Is incredibly patient.
Is a great supporter, always encouraging you and praising you when you get things right.
Would never admit it but he finds it cute when you just can’t wrap your head around something and then out of nowhere, the penny drops.
The faces you pull entertain him. Either when realization finally dawns on you or if you’re thinking very hard.
“Hey, don’t worry, you got this... let’s just go through it again.” “That’s it! See? Told you you’d get there.”
Will always make sure he brings you something to drink and snack on during session. Usually a sandwich, crisps or some chocolate to give you a bit of a boost.
Doesn’t push you too hard, if you say you have had enough, he will generally leave it there, or try to convince you to do just a bit more, but never in a demanding sort of way.
“Okay, shall we finish this page first?”
“One more section? Promise.”
Armin's biggest downside? He is so soft on you.
Very often gives you the answers as opposed to forcing you to figure it out.
Absolutely can not be stern. If you are feeling playful, or really not in the mood and start teasing him,he is quick to admit defeat rather than stand his ground and force you to get through the work.
Absolutely will do 99% of the work on group projects but share the credit with you.
Levi Ackerman:·
Will make it seem like he doesn’t want to study with you, but will ultimately agree.
“Why don’t you ask ...... instead? Tch. Fine.”
At first he will always read what it is you have to do, and then proceed to tell you what you have to do, but not necessarily tell you how to do it.
Eventually he realizes you already know what you’re supposed to do... (you can read, Levi.) And then proceeds to actually help.
Expect a lot of sarcasm and insults. He doesn’t necessarily mean them, but he will say them anyway.
"Whining about it isn’t going to magically speed this up. Get to it.”
Very rarely strays away from what it is you’re meant to be doing.
Complaining gets you nowhere with him.
“No, we’re not taking a break, you should have eaten before.”
It’s not that he doesn’t care, he does, but he also knows you will do anything to get out of studying when you’re frustrated, and tend to over-exaggerate. You’re not ‘starving’, he saw you eat at lunch... which was only a couple of hours ago.
Likes to prioritize your subjects. Will take into account when assignments are due in, how difficult they are going to be and how long it will take to get done.
Strict. Very strict.
Prefers to study in a quiet and familiar place. Libraries or either of your houses where there are minimal distractions.
Absolutely will not let you copy his notes. You’re welcome to read them, but he expects you to refer to your own. That doesn’t mean you don’t steal snippets here and there though, much to his annoyance.
“Do you pay attention in any of your classes?”
Very good at breaking things down and explaining things. You actually pick things up pretty quickly when studying with him, probably due to his ‘no nonsense’ approach.
Will occasionally randomly test you to see if you’re actually paying attention and remembering what you are doing. He always smiles a little when you can answer his questions.
Is not going to do the work for you, and certainly isn’t going to give you answers, you have to really work for them.
Is patient until you start misbehaving.
His occasional praises are a treat.
Erwin Smith:·
Loves to study with you in different places. This man will plan a whole day for it.
Will always bring a picnic when you study in a park. Happy to share a cocktail if you go to a bar, or a milkshake and burger if you go to a diner.
If you do happen to study in a library, he will always take you for food afterwards.
His notes are detailed and beautifully written and he has no problem with you using them.
Don’t expect him to give you the answers though. Erwin is the sort of person who will ask you what you think.
“How do you think we figure that out?”
“What do you think we need to do?”
“What do you think this means?”
It’s not that he doesn’t know. But he wants you to try and figure things out yourself. As long as he can see you’re making an effort though, he is happy to guide you and let answers slip here and there, or word things in such a way that you suddenly have an epiphany and get the answer.
Is a great motivator and supporter.
Doesn’t mind taking breaks every so often and uses this time to have general conversation with you. Nothing work related in the breaks, it’s meant to be a break.
Is not above bribing you. Whether it be with food, physical affection, surprises...
Yes, Erwin has in fact brought you gifts and refused to give them to you until you do the work and get it right.
And he would do it again.
Erwin knows a decent amount about a lot of different subjects and sometimes shares random facts regarding topics you’re studying about. Sometimes they are not at all relevant. But they are usually always interesting.
You have this man’s undivided attention throughout the study session. Erwin is usually very busy , so when he does dedicate time to help you, he likes to be fully committed.
Will ignore his phone completely. Texts, phone calls... everything, until you both take a break.
Hanji Zoe:·
When the two of you get together to study, it is very hit and miss as to whether you actually get the work done. She is so intelligent, but also, such a ditz at times.
Hanji can talk.
Like, a lot.
She very often will start off talking about a topic and swerve off into other lanes and get completely side-tracked.
You once started off writing a biology paper and somehow ended up getting a history lesson about Ramses II, after learning all the details of the Black Death and even touching on Jack the Ripper.
But she is highly intelligent under her scatterbrain-iness.
But can become very easily distracted. Especially if you start talking to her about something she is very excited or passionate about.
Will sometimes forget to bring textbooks you need to use.
Will hyper focus at times. Sometimes a bit too extensively. It can be very draining.
Can be known for getting lost in the details.
Never comes to a study session without a coffee for the both of you.
Absolutely has no problem sharing her notes with you, will often steal yours too.
“A fresh set of eyes and all that.”
“Ah, this is good! Who knew you were a certified genius?!”
Has no problem pulling her weight on group projects, but also has no problem letting you take the lead... or do all the work.
Tends to be much more productive closer to the end date of an assignment.
Fidgets a lot. Always tapping a pen, nibbling on the end or twirling it between her fingers. Knee bouncing... almost constantly.
Likes to take regular breaks to analyse and go over what the two of you have learned and accomplished so far and decide where to go from here.
Procrastinates.
Reiner Braun:·
Reiner is always happy to study with you. Even though his calendar is pretty full, he will always make an effort to squeeze you in.
Definitely the kinda guy to put a game night on hold, telling his friends online he will be back in a couple of hours to help you first.
Always greets you with a kind smile and asking if you’re ready for the session.
Doesn’t mind where you study, but does prefer to study at his house so he can give you a snack or something to drink.
Really likes it when you go and study in the garden. It is probably his favourite place to study with you. Just because it is nice, quiet and peaceful.
Very chilled out; will often make jokes and try his best to keep the mood light.
Very patient; has no problem going over things multiple times and trying lots of different ways to try and help you understand.
Likes to be close to you when you work together. Knees occasionally touching, shoulders brushing. Just give this man a reason to touch you in anyway shape or firm. A reassuring hand on your shoulder, a quick one armed hug in the chair, ruffling your hair, squeezing your hand... he is all about that shit.
Will celebrate your victories and praise you constantly.
“Hey, well done! See I knew you would get it.”
“We’ve done a lot today, I’m proud of you.”
Always down for a cuddle or a movie afterwards, or maybe even a walk through the park to get some air and unwind.
Will digress sometimes but it’s very fleeting and he picks up exactly where he left off again easily.
Has no problem with you taking some of his notes, or searching the Internet for answers.
Will explain how he got the answer and break things down into manageable chunks for you.
Chocolate is always on the table.
If you get too stressed he will let you take a break.
Will offer to give you neck, back or even hand massages if you get too stiff.

Let’s Talk About APD and VPD
I’m feeling very tired and not really seen, so sorry for the rant.
But starting school remotely has been difficult, especially for those including myself who have processing disorders.
I have two disorders, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD, or just ADP) and Visual Processing Disorder (VPD). To start, I’m not an expert on these, this is just my experience.
Put simply, Auditory Processing Disorder is when your brain has a hard time processing what it’s hearing. The most common examples are when someone is speaking and you know you heard them say a word but you don’t know what word, or when there is a lot of background noise and it all blends together making it difficult to hear. Other times, you get distracted by the littlest sounds that grab your attention. These are just the things I struggle with the most but there is a lot more that goes into it. Sometimes it’s like your entire life is a fill in the blank quiz that you didn’t study for.
For reference, there is overlap with ADHD because it comes across as the student not paying attention or not able to get all the information presented (I’m not as familiar with ADHD though besides some basic research, but APD is often misdiagnosed as ADHD).
Visual Processing Disorder is when your brain has a hard time processing what it’s seeing. You know when people say it takes rereading a paragraph seven times to understand anything on the page? Yeah, that’s a big one. Another common thing VPD effects is skills like catching a ball or orientation (like walking into a doorway, but I have fewer problems like that at school). Math is terrible for me because I can’t do it in my head and reading long paragraphs of dense information is both exhausting and takes a long time to process. The biggest way this affects me is when I don’t see questions on a test or miss simple information that I would normally be able to get. Almost every test there are questions I miss because I accidentally skipped past it or didn’t read it correctly even if I knew the correct answer off the top of my head when it’s pointed out to me.
There are some fundamental differences, but when it’s described, it’s similar to dyslexia or dyscalculia (again, I’m not an expert, but many of the symptoms mirror each other).
To help manage these issues, it’s helpful to go to therapy if that is an available option. They won’t go away, but there are tools that can help especially for students who are struggling in class.
You know what’s not helpful for students with auditory processing while online learning?
Buzzing and interference
Skipping audio
Connection going in and out
Heaven forbid that other students who are physically in the classroom are speaking at the same time.
WHEN YOUR TEACHER IS WEARING A MASK OR DOESN’T HAVE THEIR WEBCAM ON (I can’t see your lips, which is one of my greatest tools for figuring out what you’re saying if there is suddenly no audio.)
The bane of my existence has been fill in the blank notes. Especially if it’s a foreign word or one I’m not expecting in that context, I can easily miss it.
The annoying thing about all of this is that there are a lot of things that I can’t accommodate for, such as when a screen is blurry so I can’t see the teacher’s mouth, or when the connection is bad so videos don’t come through cleanly.
Some things you can do if you do have these issues like me are to advocate for yourself. This is so so so important. With online learning, this is a whole other hurdle.
I had a class where the teacher explicitly told his online students that he was extra careful not to post the filled-in notes for us to access. My focus was crap that day. I missed over half the blanks, so I asked for him to post the teacher’s copy. Thankfully he did so I could use it alongside my actual notes. I’ve never had to do that when I’m actually in class, but it’s always okay to ask.
Ask for the teacher’s notes or to post the videos that are watched in class
Tell them you need to sit in a certain seat
Inform the people you work with that you are listening but you might need them to repeat some things
This subject is very important to me, so if you’ve read this whole thing, thank you.
#so yeah be aware of this I guess#I hope this was easy to read#this turned out a lot longer than I intended#really not feeling online learning this week#apd#auditory processing disorder#capd#central auditory processing disorder#vpd#visual processing disorder

Top section: Stream of Consciousness: Shows To Make You Think A whole host of great documentaries, old and new, have just been added to streaming services Who doesn't love a good documentary? You can learn all sorts of things, and you don't have to do any of the research for yourself. Over the last couple of weeks, loads of people seem to have been tuning into the wealth of documentaries available on various streaming services; here are a few I particularly enjoyed. Green Planet (2020) is not your standard nature documentary; while there are some extremely cute shots of animals (including gorillas, whales, and giant squid) the main focus is on sustainable practices people are experimenting with in all sorts of industries and contexts, and the way they allow local wildlife to flourish. It's thought-provoking stuff. We're As Folk (2019) takes a look at the contemporary folk movement, interviewing figures from the second British revival right through to the present day; contributors include Seth Lakeman, Frank Turner, Anathema and Bellowhead. With folk-festival anecdotes aplenty, the documentary explores the intricacies of the genre and culminates in all the contributors performing a once-in-a-lifetime rendition of 'She Moved Through The Fair'. Gadget If You Can (2015) might be a little outdated now, but that's what makes it such a compelling watch. From watches that tell the time in 21 capital cities concurrently to hoverboards that actually, well, hover, this is a fascinating look at the new devices that seemed to be just on the horizon when it was released more than five years ago. Some have since appeared; some remain pipedreams. All are interesting! Making Fast Friends (2012) is the oldest documentary on this list, and the narrowest in scope. It was released alongside the SEGA charity single 'Fast Friends' and gives us a behind the scenes look at what happened when Sonic the Hedgehog teamed up with a whole bunch of children's TV presenters to make the record. Although largely factual in nature, it does also feature animated 'interviews' with Sonic and Knuckles, so it's entirely suitable for watching with your family. And P-White fans, in particular, will not want to miss this a second time around. A War Without War (2021), by contrast, is both up-to-the-minute and extremely disturbing to watch. It is composed of a mixture of expert analysis of the situation developing on the ground in Celestan and grim footage allegedly smuggled out of the country by fleeing residents. Moreover, with more episodes promised, it forces the viewer to acknowledge what is happening as the country breaks apart, and asks us the difficult question: can you have a war without war? Dinosaurs: The Punchline (2013) is frequently mistaken for a mockumentary thanks to its tongue-in-cheek title. It is, in fact, a thoughtful exploration of how religious groups respond to apparent conflicts between scientific facts and the tenets of their faith. Without shying away from the realities of science as we know it, this film takes a surprisingly sensitive approach to investigating how science and religion intersect in the modern world. By The Numbers (2018) looks back at the history of the televised National Lottery, along with its competitors on other channels and the entertainment chosen to appear directly after it. Featuring clips and interviews with stars from Marjorie Potts aka Telepathic Tracy, whose show aired after the draw for over a decade, to Marvin O. Bagman, whose sports-based quiz show had, at the time of the documentary’s release, the corresponding Channel 4 slot. It’s not groundbreaking, but it is very entertaining. CITRON DEUX-CHEVAL Have I missed any amazing documentaries you think I should be talking about? Drop me an email at [email protected] or leave a comment on our website and I might feature your recommendations in a future issue.
Centre left: Memory Lane: Kilcridhe Now there’s a vicar I’d have loved to meet at the altar Ask any male-attracted person of a certain age – well, my age and up, really – if they remember Kilcridhe, and you'll be met with flushed cheeks and a glassy expression. We remember Kilcridhe, all right – or perhaps it would be fairer to say that we remember Father Jacob MacCleod. It's hard to believe that heartthrob Jacob was Anthony Crowley's first major role on television, and harder still to believe that he was also one of his last. The show ran for only two six-episode series, between 2005 and 2006, but in those twelve hours I think it's fair to say a fair few of us fell irrevocably in love. Kilcridhe was named for the fictitious Scottish village where it was set, and largely revolved around the goings-on of the local church and its new minister. Much of the series' drama centred around Father MacCleod's ongoing attempts to fill the pews, which saw him trying everything from hosting a bake sale – for which he ended up baking everything himself – to arranging a community talent show, with predictably bizarre results. But during the course of these adventures, each episode also introduced us to one or more of Kilcridhe's residents. We got a glimpse into the little struggles and joys of their lives – most of which quickly became Jacob's struggles and joys, too. My main memory of this show is that it was pretty. Not just Jacob, but everything about it, from the location they chose for the exterior shots, to the tone added in post-production; everything was just slightly more saturated and colourful than real life, not enough to be jarring but enough to give the whole thing a strangely dreamlike feel. In fact, as Jacob remarked as he prepared to leave for Edinburgh at the end of series one (not knowing if he would return or if the show would be cancelled), “leaving [Kilcridhe] feels like waking from a dream, like going back to reality somehow”. It was, perhaps, for the best that Kilcridhe was cancelled after only two series. Shows originally envisioned as limited series rarely keep their charm past a second extension, and the central actor was to encounter personal problems not long after the end of the show. That's not to say that a revival couldn't work, perhaps with a completely new protagonist. But Father Jacob MacCleod lives on in the hearts of his many fans, smiling that enigmatic smile of his, and when that's not enough, there's always online fanfiction. So much fanfiction. SARAH JEUNE Memory Lane is our regular feature, looking back at the books, shows and films of yesteryear through a nostalgic lens. Do you miss something you’d like to see featured? Just send the show name (plus channel and airdates if you know them) in an email to: [email protected] - your prayers might just be answered!
Centre right: Correspondent’s Corner Stop talking about it Anathema is making waves again as she does the talk-show circuit to promote her new album, Narrative Devices. It's a very pretty album from a very lovely girl, but she does keep getting hung up on one point. Every time somebody describes her music as country, she interrupts to tell them it's folk. Well, I'm no music expert, but even I know that folk is a very European genre, and the United States' equivalent is country, or country and western music, to give it its full name, and to continue to argue to the contrary is simply courting controversy for controversy's sake. It is unbecoming of a young lady – even, or perhaps especially, a young lady with Anathema's obvious talent – to continue to argue with her elders on the subject, and even to correct the likes of Graham Norton and Giles Brandreth. These sage bastions of broadcasting deserve more respect, and they couldn't be more gracious in accepting their 'mistake'. But surely a young musician in the first flush of success should take the time to learn about what she's actually doing? It doesn't seem very much to ask. It’s not entirely her fault, of course; the youth of today are given far too much freedom by their parents and, on top of that, are often propelled to disproportionate success with no chance to prepare for it. Is it any wonder that it all goes to their heads? But there is no excuse for not making an effort to keep their egos in check and defer to their betters on matters of terminology and best practice. Naturally, we all hope that Anathema will enjoy a long and successful career making the music she enjoys the most and , more importantly, music we can all enjoy too. And I also hope that she will, eventually, acquire the humility so rarely found in young people these days and accept that she does not always know best. If she listens to the counsel of older and wiser heads than hers, she might even learn something. ANDY SANDALPHON What can’t they do? If there's one thing that's becoming apparent with every passing week of The Masked Singer UK, it's that celebrities are no longer to content to stay in their lane. No, these multi-talented marvels seem determined to push themselves to the limit in every possible field. So far, we’ve seen sergeants become singers, rugby players become rockers, doctors become divas and authors become, er, audible. And with weeks still to go in this competition, we still have eight masked celebrities to guess. Eight people whose day jobs probably don’t include getting on stage and belting out pop standards are still waiting to impress us with talents that aren’t even their thing. I mean, if I could sing and dance like the contestants on the show, you can bet your life I’d be making a living from it. It would be my number one talent, and I’d be rubbish at anything else, because most of us only get one main skill. Not these jammy gits, though. For them, this is a sideline. It's not just The Masked Singer, of course – from proving their talent for trivia on Pointless Celebrities and their wordplay wisdom on Celebrity Catchphrase to demonstrating their culinary qualities on Celebrity Masterchef and The Great Celebrity Bake Off, it seems that wherever you look someone is adding a new string to their bow. Being a phenomenally talented actor, singer, or footballer is all well and good, but more and more stars are now keen to show us that they really can do anything and everything. And why shouldn't they? It's phenomenally entertaining television to watch. And for those of us who sometimes feel inadequate compared to our famous idols, it can be very reassuring to watch, for example, a comedian weeping into his cupcake mix on Bake Off or an Oscar nominee fall on her face on Dancing On Ice. When they do well, it's amazing; when they do badly, it's life-affirming. That said, I've been blown away by the talent of the contestants on The Masked Singer this series. It's so inspirational, in fact, that I might take up watercolours. EDWARD BIGGS Bottom right (in blue box): Citron’s Quick Picks Fast favourites from Citron Deux-Cheval Look: Sea Change by Hastur LaVista There's never been a journey to to the top quite like P-White's. This authorised biography charts a course from children's presenter to global superstar through interviews, pictures and anecdotes. While the research sometimes seems a little slapdash, the story at the heart of the book is more than interesting enough to hold it together. And since it's authorised, Maputi themself has contributed plenty of private insights and observations. [Image description: A book, its cover featuring a blue-green gradient with black, dripping lines spilling across it. The title reads ‘Sea Change’. End ID.] Listen: Narrative Devices by Anathema Anathema's first album was well-received both within the folk community and beyond it. Now her second album, backed up by an obvious increase in resources, looks set to enjoy similar mainstream success, and deservedly so. The theme this time seems to be the act of telling stories, but it's also a story in itself. You'll have heard the singles, but it takes on new meaning when you play it in order! [Image description: An album cover featuring hands holding a book. The words “Anathema” and “Narrative Devices” are printed on it. End ID.] Laugh: Newtral Stance by AutoTuna on YouTube It's not the first time beleaguered commentator Newton Pulsifer has had his words edited into a supercut. It's not even the first time his frequent disagreements with the VAR have been autotuned – including by YouTube user AutoTuna. But this new edition adds an extra dimension in the form of a flat, robotic voice duetting – and duelling – with the frustrated human, taking the hilarity to a whole new level! [Image description: A screenshot of a young woman wearing a call centre headset (specifically, the woman who cold-calls Crowley in Good Omens and gets Hastur instead). She looks extremely bored. Advertisement, bottom right: IS THIS YOUR CARD? [Image Description: Two business cards with a white-to-yellow gradient, overlapping so that they are slightly fanned out. Printed on the left-hand side of each is ‘This is to certify The Amazing [blank] as a [blank] training under Mr A.Z. Fell.‘ The one behind is filled in with ‘Your Name-’ and ‘Sorcer-’. The front card is filled in in a more child-friendly font, with ‘Your Name Here’ and ‘Junior Magician’. Below this is space for a start and expiry date, filled in with ‘08/20′ and ‘08/21′ respectively. On the right-hand side of the card, a logo shows a rabbit emerging from an upturned top hat, and below it are the words ‘Harry’s Junior Magic Academy’. The word ‘Junior’ is in the same child-friendly font as before. End ID.] IT COULD BE. Membership is open to under 12s and 13-18 year-olds at www.harrys-magic.com

How to Create an Effective Plan for the Quarantine💙
This post is mostly centered towards people like me in quarantine or self-isolating and have nothing better to do. (Probably everyone.) The quarantine shouldn’t be like a long study session or a period of time which you will regret not accomplishing anything later on. I have experimented with different techniques of to-do lists, scheduling, creating an agenda for recreational activities and found the perfect one to match my needs. But I have discovered over the months, how others may suit a different method for arranging their time, that works for them, or suits them better. I have created a quiz which will help you find your perfect schedule for organization. Keep in mind that this quiz will not define your personality or what you will stick to, it is simply to just find a way of organization that I recommend.
Q1: Which of learning/schooling do you prefer?
A. Going to lectures/classes and writing down notes
B. Going to class but learn by interacting with others and the teacher
C. Being set tasks to do and self learning.
D. Online classes to work more productively in one place
Q2: What platform do you usually take your final notes on (your notes that you study from. Not your notes where you just jot down stuff the teacher says)?
A. Taking notes on paper
B. Notes on paper, but going an extra mile to make them look aesthetic!
C. Taking notes digital but transferring some into a binder or notebook
D. Taking notes digitally on a laptop or tablet
Q3. What organization system do you usually prefer when listing your tasks?
A. On a day-by-day planner agenda
B. Bullet Journal!
C. An extended to-do list or multiple lists
D. On my planner on my phone where I keep everything
Q4. What’s your main motivating cause when you study?
A. Good grades
B. Good grades but I like to treat myself when I study for a period of time
C. To get in my dream Uni
D. To have a productive schedule and studying but expertly
Q5. If you have a long-term assignment set for a month, when do you usually complete it?
A. I complete the assignment during the first week so I don’t have to worry about it. Between the time I have left and the due date, I also like to furnish it and make it better.
B. I like to not stress on one area at first so I spend the first week brainstorming ideas and start the actual assignment on the third week
C. I usually work pretty fast and I have a creative mind so my ideas flow when I start working so I procrastinate until the last week but get it done with a good effort
D. I plan out my days split the assignment into small tasks to complete throughout the entire month
Results🌻
Mostly A’s✨
You like to work effectively and like seeing good results after putting so much hard work into them. You naturally have a good work ethic, but you still have time left over to spend time doing things you love with the people you love. You might have been okay with the quarantine at first, but it is quickly starting to affect you. Even though it has given you a handful of time, you struggle to use it. We have a lot in common, and what I love doing, is having an extended to-do list of everything you want to accomplish. It can be as simple as sorting out your sports bag, to completing an assignment or something passionate, like just to binge a TV show you’ve always wanted to watch! Use this time wisely, do things you’ve always wanted to do so you won’t regret it.❤️
Mostly B’s ✨
You are absolutely love to learn, especially if it’s your favorite subject! You have a creative mind, and is always open-minded when introduced to something new. I have no doubt you already have a mental list of things you are going to accomplish during the quarantine already, most of which, are things you are passionate. Well I have 3 words for you. Go for it! Take this time to do things you love, but remember to balance it out with your priorities and finish what you started. Stay true to yourself, and yes, you might procrastinate a little a few times, and it’s totally normal! You deserve it! I would recommend starting a bullet journal, if you haven’t already, and express your artistic talent. If you are already keeping a bullet journal, good for you! Make a special page for what you are going to do during the quarantine, make it as wild as you can, and even though you probably won’t have done all the things by the end, you will have a beautiful page of your goals and experience to cherish later on. 🌹
Mostly C’s ✨
You are just like me! You love learning new things, especially if you can do them by yourself! But if I’m correct, you are a also a MAJOR procrastinator! Don’t worry, I feel you! But you know that there is so much potential in you, and I bet you can release your power to 100% if sometimes tried a bit harder, do things earlier, instead of last minute. I would recommend using a schedule planner, with dates and weeks already inserted. This will make it a lot easier for you to manage your time! Write everything down, even consider starting a diary or a journal during the quarantine! That way you have a book full with memories by the time we’ve reached the end. But you have to remember one thing. No matter how easy a task seems to you, promise that you will always put in 100% at all times. You are a type of person that would have big dreams for the future, and you already seem like you are working hard towards those dreams! So keep going girl, and do your thing 😊
Mostly D’s ✨
You love to study and accomplish new things! You believe in studying effectively, and giving your 100% in everything! It seems to me, that you already have a fantastic system, and even more, I bet you are a tech expert. Use your skills to the max sister! With your potential, I would say, use a nice app to manage your free time like: - Todoist
- Things 3
- Minimalist
- Workflowy
- Noteplan
These are just the tip of the iceberg! Branch out, find a system or app that works for you and stay comfy! If there is one thing I would suggest doing, is giving yourself breaks. The quarantine should not feel a big, giant study session! Take time off, to do things with family. Don’t feel like you should be doing more work, because you’ve worked hard during term time, and you deserve a break! You will not regret your time during the quarantine, so make the most of it💙
I hope you have found your system for the quarantine. This questionnaire might vary for some people, so please do not feel obliged to follow the exact advice. I hope you all have fun during the quarantine! Remember, you cannot buy time so use it wisely🌺

Explanatory video HwK How to make a clip
All the help you need - at your disposal
So you gradually get better and gradually integrate important workflows. It takes time, hard work and practice, but it is also possible for beginners to get a great video. If you have colleagues who have more experience in video production, listen to their tips. You can avoid certain mistakes or pitfalls right from the start. That should come as no surprise to learning experts. Scripts contain the spoken text and these explanations largely determine how good the video will be. The basics are first worked out in the workshop. Then it goes into the practical implementation of concept creation, filming and post-processing, so that at the end of the day there is a finished video. The new Cut workspace is designed for use on smaller laptop screens. When you switch to a larger monitor, the user interface scales up easily and gives you even more room to work. Every feature in the Cut workspace is designed to save space and enable cutting on smaller monitors. The toolbar offers transformation tools and everything for white balance, retiming, stabilization, dynamic zooming, audio, text and filter effects in one place. You can quickly adjust colors, change audio levels or add titles and effects without ever leaving the Cut workspace. The script defines what should be said.
Great Britain is leaving the European Union
I have some experience in creating animated videos. PowToon is definitely the easiest tool to do this.
The basics are first worked out in the workshop.
Enter your email address and always see the latest special offers, tutorials, downloads and more.
The central element is emotional storytelling.
Here you will find a possible schedule of lessons, ideas for lessons, in-depth information, a glossary and a quiz on the subject of "filming like media professionals".
The pay of trainees in East and West is gradually approaching. Six overarching goals play a role in the EU Commission's work program for this year. Subordinated to them, it plans 43 new initiatives. However, it also wants to withdraw some suggestions from the past and simplify existing regulations. Register for an upcoming live webinar or take a look around our training center. We also send custom invitations, so keep an eye out for PowToon emails. If you plan a live stream using the Events option, you can create highlights without activating the Archive recording function. The multi-sensor system addresses several senses. Create a professional title for your video with the font and format of your choice. Use the specialist knowledge of our speakers and register quickly. Participation in the workshop is free of charge, but for organizational reasons we ask you to register. Participation in the list of participants takes place in the order of registration. If there is a great demand for the workshop, we plan to offer another appointment. Learn how to create a recruiting video and go online with it.
Tap the gear above and then Look. Select the videos or photos you want to import and tap Add or Open. Learn how to use your mobile device to create a short film including a soundtrack and share it directly with others. Nationwide, the tariff training allowances rose last year by an average of 3.8 percent to EUR 939 gross per month. In this workshop we will show you how to do it. As part of the project “Handwerk Rhineland-Palatinate” we invite you to digitally shape your future and present yourself as an attractive, modern employer. Then it goes into the practical implementation of concept creation, filming and post-processing, so that a finished video is available at the end of the day.

How to Solve 10 Common Training Problems With Video
Most trainers, both formal and informal, have the same goal: to make learning that sticks.
The problem with that is, well, problems. There are tons of roadblocks that come up when you’re trying to get other people to absorb information, especially if you’re not the subject matter expert.
In this post, we examine ten pain points that video training addresses – the first of which is the time and money spent on face-to-face learning for repetitive tasks.
Problem #1: Face-to-face training is time-consuming and expensive
Thorough training for employees is entirely necessary for facilitating productivity and safety, but it can quickly become time-consuming and expensive. U.S. companies spent an estimated $70.65 billion on training in 2016 and, on average, lost 53.8 productivity hours per employee while getting them acclimated, according to Training Magazine’s 2016 “Training Industry Report.”
In most cases, scaling back training is not viable, especially for health care, finance, government, and other strictly regulated industries. But high-quality training in less time is a real possibility and is necessary for businesses that want to curb costs and inconveniences tied to face-to-face job preparation.
Step one is to replace certain face-to-face orientations and training with video-based learning content. In-person training occupies the schedule of at least two people at any given time – the trainee and the employee administering that training.
Recommended Reading: The Ultimate Guide to Easily Make Instructional Videos
While nuanced functions inevitably require physical demonstrations, more universal tasks such as filling out time cards or basic, repetitive knowledge work can be proficiently communicated with a well-produced series of on-screen demonstrations and lectures.
Moving appropriate face-to-face training to video-based training can reduce time, and therefore money. Record it once, share it as many times as you need.
Problem #2: Schedules can be a nightmare to coordinate
Time spent in face-to-face training sessions is often preceded by an uphill battle to coordinate schedules. Additionally, training coordinators are often under pressure to complete training within tight timeframes.
This is a struggle given how many people’s schedules need to be considered:
HR reps responsible for administering and/or coordinating training sessions.
IT team members needed to help with demonstration setups.
Subject matter experts brought in from other departments or locations.
New learners, who are all too easily double-booked as they ramp up.
Higher-level managers requesting to sit in on certain sessions.
The beauty of video-based training is that it can be easily recorded at a time that is convenient for those administering the session, and slotted into trainees’ schedules without excessive coordination between multiple parties. Sessions can also be saved and shared through web-based platforms to be used later as teams grow.
This way, nothing, and no one, falls through the cracks.
Problem #3: Training across the globe is difficult
Training is often a national or multinational endeavor that requires extensive resources and coordination. The costs of traveling to and from different office locations, and, in some cases, renting space to hold a training session, really add up. Meanwhile, coordinating schedules around multiple time zones can quickly become a hairsplitting exercise.
Language barriers can also present problems during training seminars, requiring translators to make sure everyone gets value from the experience.
All of this begs the question: Is the cost and complexity of global training justified?
In some cases, yes. But often, video can be used as a substitute. For instance, when onboarding new personnel, you can use screen recording or video editing software to record webinars and training demonstrations. These videos can then be edited to include captions or subtitles, translations or even quiz questions to gauge how well viewers are learning the content. More importantly, these training assets also work as scalable and repeatable resources.
In other words, with video, organizations can create concise, compelling reference material that employees can view asynchronously and worldwide, and captioned in their language, as needed.
Problem #4: I’ve only got one shot to capture everything I need from my subject matter expert
Video-conferencing between two or more people is a great way to share information and ideas. It is also ideal for communicating complex and technical information that may be specific to certain specialists, for instance, in medical fields.
This is because:
The brain processes imagery 60,000 times faster than words, according to Fast Company.
Humans retain content with imagery better than audio content alone.
But anyone who has participated in a meeting knows the feeling of trying to pay attention while also taking detailed notes. When the person on the other side of the screen is a busy subject matter expert who is not readily available, you need to ensure you get the right information the first time around. Or do you?
Screen recording and video editing tools let users record interviews so they can be 100-percent engaged during interviews and conversations.
Alternatively, a trainee could send a list of questions to a busy Subject Matter Expert (or SME), who can answer those questions in video-format. Either way, using video for SME interviews enables the creation of a permanent multimedia resource that can be played back on-demand at variable speeds, and even annotated with markers and notes if necessary. You can even get the video transcribed to turn the audio into text if needed.
Capture, consume, annotate, repeat.
Problem #5: The brain drain is real
In his book Informal Learning: Rediscovering the Natural Pathways that Inspire Innovation and Performance, Jay Cross compared formal training to riding a bus, where the driver takes you where you need to be, and informal training to riding a bike, where you make your own route, according to Brainshark.
Just as you might need a bus one day and a bike another, formal and informal video-based learning both have their place in the modern business.
Formal training is effective for establishing a knowledge base for new employees. It’s also crucial for inflexible processes such as medical protocols and compliance management. Processes like this need to be exact, and therefore conveyed in a procedural manner rather than as ad hoc lessons learned. Formal training is typically given in a deliberate order, by a specific and sometimes certified trainer, within a required time frame – for example, an engineering safety procedure video series.
Informal training happens more on a learn-as-you-go basis. For example, imagine your company has a data management system that was built in house, but the employees who built it are leaving or retiring. All of their expertise and knowledge will also leave with them, causing a void in knowledge that will be difficult to fill. Informal training can solve this through employees creating training videos around their own areas of expertise. As business processes evolve and become more efficient, employees might create video content that shares self-learned best practices.
The great thing is, you can create both formal and informal training programs with video and screencasts easily and affordably across your entire organization.
Problem #6: I work with smart people. How do I learn from them?
There is a lot of value in a well-produced series of onboarding videos that help employees acclimate to their roles quickly and inexpensively. But there’s also value in the organic development of a training community that employees can contribute to, and learn from, ad hoc.
This process, called social learning, doesn’t happen formally, or at management’s request. Rather, it’s the natural outcome of democratizing visual communication tools. Case in point, if someone who is asked to explain pivot tables enough times has access to easy to use video creation tools, they might just go ahead and record a quick “How To” video.
The second part of that is having a hub where these videos can be uploaded and shared with a relevant audience.
With intuitive screen capture tools and a collaborative sharing platform, workplace knowledge and training can be crowdsourced.
Problem #7: Slide decks get boring…fast
Slide decks fulfill a useful function: to organize and present content-heavy training sessions with short, bullet-point summations and visual media.
The problem is that too many slide decks fail at the “ visual media” element by not using images or media at all. The goal of any good slide deck should be to tell a story, not to read facts and information from a screen verbatim. Part of telling that story is showing the audience something that visually communicates the message.
One of the best ways to avoid creating a mundane or overwhelming slide deck is to include screenshots, GIFs and video clips. Presenters can visually annotate screenshots to more effectively illustrate their points. No more excessively long, bulleted lists.
Video and animated GIFs also liven up the presentation.
Whoever said slide decks have to be boring?
Problem #8: Remember that training from three months ago? Me neither…
The biggest drawback of traditional, in-person training sessions and written training manuals is that it’s easy to forget the content, and hard to find it when you need it later. Instead of digging back through past notes from training sessions, what if the initial training had been recorded, and then broken into several short videos?
The videos would serve as short, digestible content that can be absorbed quickly, but also passively. In other words, it can be watched over and over again as needed, and with very little work on the part of the employee. Just record the original training, and break it up into microvideos for anyone to watch when they need to.
Another option is to include a table of contents for training videos, which let viewers jump to the most relevant topics in the video, depending on their needs at the time.
Present it once, watch it once and reference it as many times as you need.
Problem #9: So much training, so little time
Companies are taking twice as long to hire than they were just a few years ago, The Wall Street Journal noted. Understandably, managers are therefore eager to get new employees trained quickly. This means businesses are under pressure to teach employees faster in a shorter time period.
However, managers also don’t want to leave new hires feeling unprepared to handle tasks being thrown at them – which is too often the case. According to HR Morning, approximately one-third of hires quit within the first six months of employment, and the fourth most commonly cited reason for leaving is “inadequate training.”
One way companies have sought to change this is by using video to more effectively convey information in an engaging, memorable format. According to Forrester, employees are 75 percent more likely to watch training videos than to read training documentation.
As an added bonus for employers, many video editors let you add quiz questions to check if your viewer is learning the content correctly, so trainers can keep tabs on user progress.
With more friendly video creation tools on the market, it’s easier than ever to create engaging videos that include motion graphics, effects, and captions, rather than just a trainer talking through the content. Give the people what they want–engaging video-based training content that presents a message concisely and memorably–and they’ll be more likely to give you what you want: a shorter learning curve and a longer tenure.
Problem #10: Scaling training is complicated
Last but not least, as businesses grow and change, training must change with it to stay fresh.
A notable benefit of using video and other eLearning media is that you can create and share more training content in less time. Rather than developing a series of slide decks, coordinating schedules and delivering multiple sessions to users, training coordinators can focus on the production of multimedia training resources that can be delivered to trainees without any of the physical presentations or scheduling challenges.
Another big benefit of video-based training content is that you can always edit it if the content needs to be changed or updated, and then simply redistribute the updated content instead of calling everyone back together for face-to-face training.
Additionally, video enables the sharing of knowledge, presentations, and demonstrations among employees and ensures that there’s a community for both formal and informal learning.

Mastery Journal Reflection Month 2 FBI-O
It’s hard to believe that I am wrapping up my second month in my graduate program. I feel fortunate to have the personal and professional support from family, friends and peers. THANK YOU!
Mastery Timeline Goal Reflection Looking back at my Mastery Journal Timeline for Month 2, I feel I have successfully met my goals and exceeded my expectations for the class. My goals were to meet and get to know my classmates, ensure my software was properly installed and use a Lynda.com course to learn a little more about Business Intelligence (BI) prior to my Month 2 start.
Our class size is small so getting to know my classmates has been fairly easy. Having the opportunity to weigh in on assigned work via discussion posts and using the RISE Model (Wray 2016) has allowed each of us to give constructive and thoughtful feedback. I am also fortunate enough to have a colleague at the department in which I am employed as a classmate. It’s nice to be able to discuss assignments and bounce ideas off of each other.
On my first day of class in Month 2, I remember struggling with the software install even though I had worked with our support team to ensure a proper installment prior to the class starting. A few hours and a little patience on my part, I was able to uninstall, reinstall the Windows platform as a partition to my MacBook and install my software application needed for my first week’s assignment. Anyone that reads this and struggles with computer difficulties, please know that I feel for you and am open to trying to assist you as needed. Having someone on your side to assist and support you is sometimes all you need. A big thanks for the FSO Support team as they gave me guidance during a stressful time.
For those of you that may not be aware, Lynda.com is a “leading online learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals (“Lynda: Online courses, class, training, tutorials,” 2017). The training courses are typically broken down into small chunks and very well done, in my opinion. By simply searching your key term, you will most likely found a plethora of short and long videos, like I did for Business Intelligence.
What I’ve Learned From The Course Content The course content in the Foundations of Business Intelligence was a good challenge for me. The textbook, Business Intelligence, was an excellent read and I highly recommend it for those interested in learning BI. I learned many new terms as well as the four main capabilities of Business Intelligence. Each capability was clearly defined and outlined the technologies used for each. I consider myself a creative so I resonated most with the Presentation capability which outlines ways to visually represent data (Wray 2010). The final part of the book (Section III) was especially interesting to me to read as I found the content very relevant to problems our Marketing department is trying to solve. The topic of development of BI was especially good because of past experiences I’ve had with leading a creative team that was responsible for the back-end development, coding and workflow approaches like agile and waterfall development. I learned much from the course, the assignments and the book. I will admit, four weeks ago I took a pre-course knowledge quiz which confirmed I had a lot to learn. Thankfully my hard work has paid off (so far) and my post-course knowledge quiz results confirmed the information is sinking in!
Beyond Graduation It’s only Month 2 and I have already bettered myself with what I’ve learned. I can’t imagine how I will feel when I do graduate, besides being exhausted, but I know that what I will be learning going forward will be applicable to my current role in the Marketing department.
I hope to apply my knowledge and new found expertise by supporting the current team, asking questions, getting teammates to think differently about what we do and how we do it. I see myself questioning data to ensure that it’s clean, asking where we get data, supporting the team that is currently working to create a data mart and learning Tableau so I can help weigh in on the data that we collect.
Ideally, someday, I’d like to be seen as a subject matter expert in Business Intelligence. My education will not stop at graduation of my Master’s in Business Intelligence at Full Sail University. This is just the start.

Blackjack Basic Strategy - from Blackjack Expert Henry Tamburin
BLACKJACK BASIC STRATEGY
The objective of this chapter is to teach you the playing strategies for blackjack. Topics covered include:
What exactly is the “blackjack basic playing strategy,” and why is it so important.
The basic strategy rules for surrendering a hand.
The basic strategy rules for splitting a pair.
The basic strategy rules for doubling down hard and soft hands.
The basic strategy rules for hitting and standing.
Insurance and even money.
IMPORTANCE OF BASIC BLACKJACK STRATEGY
I’m going to show you how to save $80,000 over your lifetime of playing blackjack. Don’t believe it’s possible to do this? At the end of this section I’ll show how this is possible.
BLACKJACK QUIZ
The first step to become a skillful player is to learn the basic blackjack playing strategy. Many players believe they know the blackjack basic strategy. It’s been my experience that beginning players, who are serious about learning how to win, are usually enthusiastic about wanting to learn basic strategy. Experienced players, on the other hand, scoff at reading or learning about basic strategy because, “They know that stuff.” Well, if you are an “experienced player,’’ let’s see how much you really know about blackjack basic strategy. Jot down how you would play these hands; unless otherwise stated, assume a standard 6-deck game, dealer stands on soft 17, and doubling down after pair splitting is permitted.
You have 10-2 and the dealer shows a 3.
You have 6-5 and the dealer shows a 10.
You have ace-7 and the dealer shows a 9.
You have 2-3-ace and the dealer shows 4.
You have 9-9 and the dealer shows a 9.
You have 8-8 and the dealer shows a 10.
You have 10-6 and the dealer shows a 7.
You have an ace-10 and the dealer has an ace. The dealer asks if you want even money. Should you take it?
You have 10-4 and the dealer shows an ace but doesn’t have blackjack. The casino allows surrender.
You have ace-8, and the dealer shows a 6. The rules specify that the dealer must hit soft 17.
THE CORRECT BASIC BLACKJACK STRATEGY PLAYS FOR THE ABOVE HANDS IN ORDER ARE:
If you got some wrong, don’t fret, because the majority of blackjack players, even experienced players, flunk this quiz, which is why casinos continue to profit from a game that theoretically can be beaten.
WHAT IS BASIC STRATEGY?
The basic blackjack playing strategy is a set of rules that tells you the optimal way to play every hand dealt to you when the only information you have is your hand and the dealer’s upcard. Basic strategy is the mathematically correct way to play every hand because over time it will maximize the amount of money you will win and minimize the amount you will lose. The reason that the game of blackjack is subject to mathematical analysis is because it is, inherently, a mathematical game; that is, blackjack has a fixed set of rules.
The dealer must hit on 16 or less and stand on 17–21.
Blackjack players have only five playing decisions to consider: stand, hit, double down, split, and surrender.
The double-bust rule that automatically results in a player loss
The payoffs when players win a hand, including the 3-2 bonus for a natural.
All of this information can be subjected to combinatorial analysis or programmed into a computer to play simulated hands of blackjack – not just a few hands, but millions, even trillions if you wish. And computers are marvelous machines because they not only can play the game exactly as you would in a casino, but they will remember how many times you won a hand, and how many times you lost. And that’s exactly how blackjack basic strategy was refined over the years.
BOTTOM LINE
The basic playing strategy is a set of rules that tells you the optimal way to play every hand dealt to you when the only information you have is your hand and the dealer’s upcard.
CASINOS’ EDGE
In Chapter 1, I showed you how you can reduce the casinos’ edge in blackjack to about 0.2–0.5% (rule dependent) by knowing the correct playing decisions (i.e., the basic playing strategy). A half percent house edge in dollars and cents means the casino will win, on average, fifty cents for every $100 you bet. This is, by far, a less costly game to play when you compare the loss per $100 wager to other casino games:
Bank hand in baccarat is $1.06
Pass line at craps is $1.41
Playing double zero roulette is $5.26.
Of course, you can do better than losing 50 cents per hundred dollars bet at blackjack and in future chapters I’ll show you how.
SAVING $80,000
Here’s a quick story that I hope will reinforce my point about why it’s so critical and important that you learn the basic playing strategy.Let’s assume twin brothers Jack and Joe, in their long lifetime of gambling, will each play 10,000 hands of blackjack per year, for 50 years, assuming 100 hands per hour, and 100 hours of blackjack per year. Their average bet will be a modest $10 per hand, playing a typical six-deck blackjack game where the dealer stands on soft 17, and double down after pair splitting is allowed. In all, they will each wager $5 million. Jack never bothers to learn the basic playing strategy, so he plays by intuition. Over his lifetime, Jack is expected to lose about $100,000 at the blackjack tables, assuming a disadvantage of about 2%. Jack’s twin brother, Joe, takes a different course of action. He spends a little time and learns the basic playing strategy. He also brings along a basic strategy card when he plays, so if he is not sure how to play a hand, he glances at his card for guidance. By playing basic strategy perfectly, Joe expects to lose about $20,000 over his lifetime, assuming a disadvantage of 0.4%. Compared to his twin brother, Jack, Joe saved $80,000. If I paid you $80,000 to learn basic strategy, would you do it? Of course, you would. And that’s exactly my point; namely, memorizing the basic playing strategy has real value over your lifetime of playing blackjack. So, let’s get started on learning how to play every hand perfectly.
BLACKJACK SURRENDER STRATEGY
The “surrender” rule is the most misunderstood rule in blackjack. The word itself has a negative connotation amongst players, and their opinion of the surrender rule goes something like this: “I mean come on, aren’t you supposed to WIN your hand when you play blackjack, not SURRENDER it?”
It turns out that using the blackjack surrender option properly is actually a very smart play to make on some hands compared to an alternative play of, say, hitting or standing. For the uninitiated, surrender works like this:
After considering your initial two-card hand and the dealer’s upcard, if you think your chance of winning the hand is very poor, you can forfeit playing your hand and surrender (or give up) half of the amount of your wager. You indicate to the dealer when you want to surrender in one of two ways
In some casinos, you must verbally announce to the dealer that you want to surrender your hand by saying “surrender.”
Other casinos have implemented a hand signal for surrender, which is to draw an imaginary line from left to right on the felt with your index finger.
Either way, if you decide to surrender your hand, the dealer will remove half of your bet then scoop up your initial two cards and place them in the discard tray. Essentially, when you surrender, you forfeit the right to play out your hand and you immediately lose half of your bet.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BLACKJACK SURRENDER: LATE SURRENDER AND EARLY SURRENDER.
LATE BLACKJACK SURRENDER
With late surrender, you can only surrender your hand after the dealer peeks at her hole card when she shows an ace or a ten, to determine if she has blackjack. If she has blackjack, the surrender option is no longer available, and you will lose your entire bet unless you also have a blackjack. When you use late surrender correctly, it will reduce the house edge by about 0.07 percent in multiple-deck games.
The basic strategy for late surrender is summarized below in a black and white table followed by a color-coded strategy chart, for all games.
BASIC STRATEGY – LATE SURRENDER

SINGLE DECK WITH HARD 17

DOUBLE DECK WITH SOFT 17

DOUBLE DECK WITH HARD 17

4/6/8 DECKS WITH HARD 17

EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE THE BLACKJACK BASIC STRATEGY
Single-deck game with hard 17, you hold 16, dealer’s upcard is a 10. You should surrender.
Double-deck game with soft 17, you hold 15, dealer’s upcard is an ace. You should hit (surrender only against dealer’s 10).
Six-deck game with soft 17, you hold 16, dealer’s upcard is a 9. You should surrender.
Six-deck game with hard 17, you hold 8-8, dealer’s upcard is an ace. You should surrender.
EARLY SURRENDER
Early surrender is rarely offered in U.S. casinos and is more prevalent in European and Asian casinos where dealers do not take a hole card until after all players have acted on their hands (so-called European no-hole-card rule, which I will cover in more detail in Chapter 13). With the early surrender option, players can surrender their hand to a dealer’s ace and/or ten-value upcard before the dealer checks to determine if she has a blackjack. Early surrender is a much more favorable rule for players than late surrender. Early surrender against the ace gains you 0.39 percent, and against the 10, it’s 0.24 percent, making the total value to the player 0.63 percent for a six-deck s17 game.
STRATEGY FOR EARLY SURRENDER
The basic playing strategy for early surrender in a multiple-deck game (soft 17) is different than the strategy for late surrender. When early surrender is offered, you should surrender these hands:
Against a dealer ace, surrender hard 5 to 7 (including 3s), and 12 to 17 (including 6s, 7s, and 8s).
Against a dealer ten, surrender hard 14 to 16, including 7s and 8s.
Against a dealer 9, surrender hard 10-6 and 9-7 (but not 8s).
Note that in some European and Asian (especially Macau) casinos, you can only early surrender against a dealer’s ten upcard not against the ace.
MATH OF SURRENDER
You should surrender a hand when your chance of winning is less than one out of four hands, i.e., your expected loss is worse than 50%. This means that statistically, if playing the hand has less than a 25 percent chance of winning and consequently greater than a 75 percent chance of losing, you will save money in the long run by surrendering the hand instead.
MODERATING NEGATIVE SWINGS
Besides reducing the house edge, surrender also has this benefit: it will stabilize your bankroll, meaning surrender will flatten the fluctuations in your bankroll, compared to a game where surrender is not offered and you have to play all your hands to completion.
Additional Tips
Many casinos that offer surrender don’t advertise it; therefore, don’t be afraid to ask the floor person or dealer if it’s available.
Don’t be surprised if your fellow players look at you like you are some kind of kook when you surrender.
Most novice players and even some casino supervisors think that giving up half of your bet and throwing in the hand is a stupid play. Pay no attention to their stares or comments — you’ll be making the right play and saving more of your profits in the long run.
Surrender is one of those rare benefits that casinos offer players, so take advantage of their generosity and learn the proper playing strategy for surrender.
BLACKJACK PAIR SPLITTING STRATEGY
When it comes to splitting pairs in blackjack most players are in a fog. They either never split, or they always split, or in the worst case, they recklessly split pairs with no rhyme or reason. This is unfortunate because pair splitting was introduced into the game as a way for players to reduce the casino’s advantage. But in reality an option meant to help the player has turned out to be a money maker for the casino.
Every time I observe a recreational player splitting tens (which is an awful play), I visualize a big casino cash register going cha-ching. But it doesn’t have to be like this. In fact, by the time you finish reading this section you will learn when and why to split pairs so that you can use this option efficiently to win more money when you play blackjack.
CASINO BLACKJACK RULES FOR PAIR SPLITTING
The casino rules for pair splitting are pretty straightforward. When you are dealt two cards of the same value, you may split them into two separate hands. For example, if you bet $5 and receive a pair of 2s, you have a single hand totaling 4. You could play the hand as a 4 and draw additional cards or you could split the 2s into two hands. You activate the pair splitting option by placing another equal bet next to the original bet on the layout. If your original bet was $5, then you would place another red chip on the layout. Do not place your chip(s) on top of the original wager — simply place it adjacent to your original bet. By doing this, you are signaling the dealer that you want to split your 2s, and play two hands. One hand has a $5 bet and contains a 2, ditto for the second hand. You must play out your first hand (to your right) before you are permitted to play out the second hand.
BASIC BLACKJACK STRATEGY FOR PAIR SPLITTING
The factors that determine the basic strategy for pair splitting are the number of decks of cards and the playing rules. Note: When casinos offer the more liberal DAS, you will be splitting more hands than when the rules specify NDAS. The basic strategy for pair splitting is shown below in a black and white table followed by a color-coded chart for single-, double-, and 4/6/8-deck games.
The black and white strategy table shows your pair in the first column and, in the second column, what the dealer’s up-card should be for you to split.
The color-coded chart shows the dealer’s up-card across the top and your pair along the left side. If the letter P (for Pair Split) is shown at the intersection of your pair and the dealer’s up-card that means you should split. Note: All pairs that should be split are highlighted with a blue background.
EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE THE STRATEGY
Single-deck game with NDAS, you hold 3-3 and the dealer’s upcard is a 7. You should split.
Double-deck game with DAS, you hold 4-4 and the dealer’s upcard is a 5. You should split.
Double-deck game with NDAS, you hold 4-4 and the dealer’s upcard is a 5. You should not split.
Six-deck game with DAS, you hold 9-9 and the dealer’s upcard is a 9. You should split.
LOGIC FOR SPLITTING
There are three reasons why it makes sense to split rather than to employ an alternate strategy. You should always split when:
You will win more money on average (bold strategy), or
You will lose less money on average (defensive strategy), or
You will turn a losing hand into a winning one (offensive strategy).
MATH OF PAIR SPLITTING
I’ll give a few examples of the math of pair splitting for the bold, defensive, and offensive pair splits.
BOLD BLACKJACK STRATEGY
A bold strategy means you are already the favorite to win money on a hand but if you split you’ll win even more money. For example, suppose you are dealt a 9-9 against the dealer 6 upcard in a 6-deck, s17 game with NDAS, and resplits are allowed to a total of four hands. By standing, you can expect to win 64% of the hands and lose 36%. This means if you bet $1 per hand, playing this hand 100 times, you can expect an average profit per hand of ($64 – $36) divided by 100 = 28 cents. If you split instead, the percentage of hands that you will win decreases slightly to 60% because you are better off starting with an 18 (9-9) against the dealer’s 6, than starting with a single 9. If your winning percentage decreases when you split how can you win more? Because you have to take into consideration that you doubled your bet when you split. Your profit potential for both of the two hands together is 2 times ($60 – $40) divided by 100 = 40 cents. For every original $100 you bet on the 9-9 against the dealer 6 you stand to earn $12 more by splitting than by standing.
DEFENSIVE BLACKJACK STRATEGY
The defensive pair splitting strategy of betting more to cut your losses is confusing to players. All they remember is getting a weak pair, splitting them because the “book says so,” and then losing both bets.
What they don’t realize is that even though you will lose money over the long haul when you split pairs defensively, you will lose even more money on the hand if you don’t split. Take the example of a pair of 7s against a dealer 2 upcard in a six-deck game with h17 and resplitting to a maximum of four hands. A 14, you’ll agree, is a lousy hand. If you stand you can expect to win 36% of the time and lose 64%. Your net expected loss per hand is ($64 – $36)/100 = 28 cents. In other words, a 14 against a dealer’s 2 is a losing hand if you stand, to the tune of 28 cents per hand. Suppose instead you split the 7s. You start each hand with a 7, which is slightly better then a 14 against the dealer 2. But you are still the underdog even with the 7. You can expect to win 45% of the hands and lose 55%, and your average loss per hand comes to 10 cents, or 20 cents for the two hands. Yes, you are still going to lose money on the hand but which is better … to lose 28 cents per hand by standing or 20 cents by splitting? I think you’ll agree that splitting is the better play because you cut your losses by 8 cents.
OFFENSIVE BLACKJACK STRATEGY
Offensive pair splitting is often the most satisfying kind of splitting because you turn a losing hand into a winning one. Suppose, in an s17, multi-deck, NDAS game, you are dealt a pair of 7s, the dealer has a 6 upcard and you stand. A 14 is not a very good hand even against the dealer 6 upcard. You will win on average 42% of the hands (when the dealer busts) and lose 58% for a net loss of 16 cents per hand. By pair splitting, you start with a 7 on each hand, which is a stronger starting point than the 14. Therefore when you split you will win 52% of the hands and lose 48% for a 4 cent per hand (8 cents per pair split) profit. By splitting offensively you’ve turned the 16 cents per hand deficit into 8 cents per split profit, which is an overall gain of 24 cents.
Splitting pairs by the basic playing strategy allows you to turn potential losing hands into winners, earn more money on some splits, and lose less money on others. It’s an important strategy that you need to learn to reduce the house edge against you when you play blackjack.
BLACKJACK DOUBLING DOWN STRATEGY
Have you ever wondered how you can possibly break even or win at blackjack when overall you stand to win only about 47% (excluding ties) of the hands dealt to you? One reason is the double down option.
CASINO RULES FOR DOUBLING DOWN
When a casino allows you the option to double down, it means you can double the amount of your initial bet in return for receiving one, and only one, draw card; i.e., when you double down you give up the option of drawing more than one card. Most casinos allow you to double down on any two-card hand (hard or soft), whereas some restrict doubling to specific starting hands, e.g., doubling is allowed only on hard 10 and 11. The best player-friendly doubling rules are when you can double down on any two cards.
The two variables that determine whether or not you should double down are the total of the cards in your hand and the dealer’s upcard. As a general rule, the hands you are most likely to double are hard 8, 9, 10, and 11, and the soft 13 (A-2) through 18 (A-7) hands.
BASIC STRATEGY FOR SINGLE DECK
The following black and white tables and color-coded chart summarize the doubling down basic strategy for:
Single-Deck Hard Hands
Single-Deck Soft Hands
Single-Deck Pairs

Single-Deck Hard Hands (but not 4-4)
In a single-deck game, you would double down on a pair of 5s, and sometimes on a pair of 4s. The latter depends on if the game is NDAS or DAS.

Double- and 4/6/8-Deck Soft Hands with H17
Double- and 4/6/8-Deck Pairs
The following color-coded charts summarize the double down basic strategy for Double Deck and 4/6/8 Decks with S17, followed by Double- and 4/6/8-Deck with H17.
Examples of How to Use the Tables and Charts
Single-deck game with h17, you hold 9 and the dealer’s upcard is a 2. You should double down.
Double-deck game with h17, you hold A-8 and the dealer’s upcard is a 6. You should double-down.
4/6/8-deck game with s17, you hold 7-4. Dealer shows an ace. You should not double down. You would double 7-4 against an ace only in single- and double-deck games.
LOGIC FOR DOUBLING DOWN ON HARD HANDS
Most of the time when you play blackjack you must play defensively because the dealer’s hand has a likelihood of beating your hand. But the logic for doubling down is you get to go on the offensive at the best possible time – when the dealer has a relatively high probability of busting or when you have the edge over the dealer on the hand.
LOGIC FOR DOUBLING ON SOFT HANDS
The logic for doubling on soft hands isn’t always clear to players so they often pass up the opportunity. The reason you double on soft hands is not so much to outdraw the dealer as it is to get more money on the table when the dealer is vulnerable to busting (shows a low-value upcard of 2-6).
GAINS FROM HARD AND SOFT DOUBLING
If you follow the hard doubling down basic strategy, your gain will be about 1.3 percent. Learn when to double down on soft hands and you’ll gain another 0.13 percent.
REDUCING YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING A HAND
What is ironic about doubling down is that with some hands, you will actually be reducing your chances of winning the hand because you get only one draw card. Take a 6-3 against a dealer’s 5 upcard. If you doubled down and drew a 2 for an 11, the only way you could win the hand would be if the dealer busted. If you hadn’t doubled down, you could have drawn another card to your 11 and improved your chances of winning. Nevertheless the right play is to double down because of the extra money you put into action. Here’s why.
MATH OF DOUBLING
If you hit a two-card 9 you stand to win 59 percent of the hands and lose 41 percent of them. If you bet $1 per hand, playing this hand 100 times, you can expect an average profit per hand of $59 – $41 divided by 100 = 18 cents. If instead you double down, you stand to win only 57% of the hands but at double the amount bet. Your net gain by doubling is ($57 – $43) times 2 (double bet) divided by 100 = 28 cents. That’s 10 cents more gained per hand over hitting, which is why doubling is the better strategy in this case.
DOUBLING ON THREE OR MORE CARDS
Some casinos allow players to double down on three or more cards. In other words, if you had a 5-3 and drew a 3 for an 11, you could double down after the third card was drawn. This rather rare option will give you another 0.2 percent gain.
DOUBLING DOWN FOR LESS
Some casinos allow players to double down for less. This means if you bet $10 on the hand you can double down for an amount less than $10. But it is not wise to do so because you will maximize your gain only when you maximize the permissible amount of your double-down bet.
Learning the doubling down basic strategy for hard and soft hands is important because it allows you to bet more when the likelihood of winning your hand is good. It’s a key playing strategy that allows you to reduce the casino’s edge when you play blackjack.
BLACKJACK HIT & STAND STRATEGY
As you will learn shortly (Chapter 4), the last decision you should make when choosing which strategy to implement with your hand is whether to hit or stand. In this section, I’ll cover the hitting and standing strategy for hard hands and soft hand.
CASINO BLACKJACK RULES FOR HITTING AND STANDING
The most frequent playing decision that you will have to make is whether to hit or stand.
Hitting means to ask for another card (sometimes referred to as “drawing another card”).
Standing means you are satisfied with your hand and you don’t want any more cards.
You can stand or hit on any hand that totals 21 or less.
You must signal the dealer to indicate if you want to hit or stand. Use the correct signals when the cards are dealt face up vs. when they are dealt face down.
In the process of taking a hit, if your hand exceeds a total of 21, you’ve busted and you automatically lose your bet.
Once you signal to the dealer that you want to stand, that completes your hand for that round.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT HARD HANDS
The worst hands you will get at blackjack are hard 12 through 17. The reason is that no matter what the dealer’s upcard happens to be, you stand to lose more hands than you will win in the long run. One exception: in an s17 game with two or more decks, a 17 vs. a 6 is a slight winner. In other words, virtually all these hands are overall losers for blackjack players. Surprised? Here’s one more gruesome statistic. You are going to be dealt one of these losers about 4 out of every 10 hands.
So what’s a blackjack player to do when 40% of the time you are going to get a 12 through 17 whether you like it or not? Since you can’t change the cards that you are dealt, the best you can do is follow the basic playing strategy for hard (and soft) hands. You’ll still take your lumps but you’ll lose less money in the long run when you follow the basic strategy than if you depend upon divine intervention, or worse, play by the seat of your pants.
BASIC STRATEGY FOR HITTING AND STANDING
The following black and white tables and color-coded charts summarize the hitting and standing basic strategy for single-, double-, and 4/6/8-deck games. They assume that:
Surrender is not available (if it is, follow the surrender strategy)
You can double down on any two-card hand (following the doubling down strategy)
If there are restrictions to hard or soft doubling, see the hitting and/or standing strategy.
The black and white tables and colored-coded charts contain the strategy for hitting and standing on hard hands, soft hands, and pairs for single-, double-, and 4/6/8-decks. The color-coded charts for single deck follow the black and white tables for single deck. Ditto for double deck and 4/6/8 decks. In total, there are nine black and white tables and nine color-coded charts containing the summary for hitting and splitting for all games and rules.
Note: The hitting and standing strategies for hard and soft hands are not affected by DAS or NDAS, only whether the dealer stands on soft 17 (s17) or hits soft 17 (h17). Therefore the hitting and standing strategies below for hard and soft hands can be used with either DAS or NDAS. With pair splitting, the strategy is affected by DAS or NDAS, which is why there is one table and chart for pair splitting with DAS, and another with NDAS. Whether or not the dealer stands or hits on soft 17 will depend on the game in question. In most cases the rule will be printed on the table layout. h17 will increase the house edge by around 0.2%, compared to s17.

EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE THE TABLES
Single-deck game with h17, you hold 16 and the dealer’s upcard is a 7. You should hit.
Single-deck game with h17 and NDAS, you hold A-7 and the dealer’s upcard is a 9. You should hit.
Double-deck game with s17 and DAS, you hold a pair of 9s and the dealer’s upcard is a 7. You should stand.
Eight-deck game with s17, you hold a 12 and the dealer’s upcard is a 3. You should hit.
Single-deck game, h17 and NDAS, you hold 4-4 and the dealer’s upcard is a 4. You should hit.
Double-deck game with S17, you hold A-6 and the dealer’s upcard is a 2. You should hit.
LOGIC FOR HITTING AND STANDING ON HARD HANDS
The most common mistake made by novice blackjack players is to always stand on their stiff hands because they are afraid to bust. Stiff means a hand that can be busted by a one-card draw; for example a hard 12 through 16. However, this is a big mistake when the dealer’s upcard is a 2 through 6. Since you know the dealer must hit stiff hands by the rules of the game, you should:
Not risk busting your stiff hand (resulting in an automatic loss) when the dealer’s upcard is 2-6 because she may end up with a stiff hand
Instead, stand pat, let the dealer draw, and hope she busts
There is one exception to this rule and that’s when you are dealt a 12 and the dealer’s upcard is a 2 or 3. That’s because the dealer is not as weak with a 2 or 3 upcard, as her bust frequency is lower (35% and 37% respectively) compared to when her upcard is a 4, 5, or 6 (40%, 43%, and 42% respectively). Consequently, the percentages are slightly better for:
Hitting a hard 12 against a dealer’s 2 and 3 upcard rather than standing.
When the dealer shows a 7 through A upcard, there is a strong likelihood she will end up with a pat hand (i.e., a 17 through 21). Therefore, when you hold hard 16 or less, and surrendering, pair splitting, or doubling is not an option, the percentages are better if you hit your hand even at the risk of busting until you achieve at least a hard 17.
LOGIC FOR HITTING AND STANDING ON SOFT HANDS
Many novice players stand on soft 17 (A-6) thinking that’s a good total, but this is another big mistake. That’s because you can’t bust with a one-card draw to a soft 13 through 17; therefore it’s worth hitting to try to get to hard 17 or soft 18 or higher. As a general rule, you should never stand on soft 13 through soft 17. You are either going to double down per the doubling strategy summarized in section 2.4, or hit. Your goal is to get to hard 17 or soft 18 to 21, with one exception. When you hold a soft 18 and the dealer shows a strong 9, 10, or A upcard, the percentages are slightly in your favor to hit (rather than stand) on soft 18. Exception: occasionally, depending on rules, you stand on A-7 vs. A. Here’s another important point to keep in mind about soft hands. Oftentimes your soft hand will be converted to a hard hand when you hit. For example, suppose you have an A-4 and the dealer shows a 7 upcard. You hit and draw a 10. You’ve converted a soft 15 into a hard 15. Now you must switch and use the hard hand standing/hitting rules, which for hard 15 against a 7, is to hit until you get to 17 or more.
MATH OF HITTING AND STANDING
Let’s look at the math for one hand so you will understand why the basic strategy says to hit some hands and stand on others. Suppose you are dealt a 12 against a dealer 2 (six-deck game with s17). The percentage of the hands that you stand to win or lose is:
If you stand, you’ll win 35.2% of the hands and lose 64.8%, on average (excludes ties).
If you hit, you’ll win 37.4% of the hands and lose 62.6%, on average (excludes ties).
Using either strategy, you will be a net loser: 29.6% for standing and 25.2% for hitting. Let’s assume you wagered $10 per hand.
After 100 hands, in which you stand on 12 each time, you’d lose about $29, on average.
After 100 hands in which you hit your 12 each time you’d lose about $25, on average.
So what would you rather do: lose $29 per $100 bet by standing or $25 per $100 by hitting? I hope you agree that hitting 12 against a dealer 2 is a better play (monetarily) than standing, which is why the basic playing strategy states to “Hit 12 against dealer’s upcard of 2.”
I’LL PLAY BY THE DEALER’S RULES
I’d be remiss if I didn’t say something about players who “mimic” the dealer’s rules when they play blackjack; namely, they always hit on 16 or less, always stand on 17 or more, and never double down or split (because the dealer doesn’t). This is a terrible strategy that results in roughly a 5% house edge against you, that’s about 10-times greater than the house edge using the basic playing strategy discussed in this chapter.
If a casino offered you this proposition, would you take it? You can play blackjack for the rest of your life and they will give you an automatic 18 on every hand. Would you accept this proposition?
Most players would because they believe that an 18 surely has to be a winning hand in blackjack. Guess again, because.
Overall you’ll end up with a net loss of 0.6% on all the hands (i.e., overall an 18 is a losing hand).
This is what makes blackjack a tough and sometimes frustrating game. You play by the book yet you still end up with a losing session. It happens because for many of the hands you will be dealt, more so the hard hands discussed in this section, you are, unfortunately, the underdog no matter what playing strategy you invoke. Still, as I’ve mentioned several times (and I hope it sinks in), your best strategy is to:
Always follow the basic playing strategy because in the long run, you’ll lose less when you are the underdog and win more when you are the favorite than with any other playing strategy.
Next up are the insurance and even-money propositions. Should you make those bets? Stay tuned.
BLACKJACK INSURANCE & EVEN MONEY STRATEGY
In this section, I’ll discuss the insurance (and even money) bet. They are side bets introduced into the game of blackjack to give the perception to players that they will protect their hand against a dealer blackjack. You’ll be making the decision on the insurance (or even money) wager even before you decide whether to surrender, double down, split, hit, or stand.
CASINO RULES FOR INSURANCE
Whenever the dealer shows an ace upcard, the dealer will ask the players if they want to make the insurance bet. It’s an optional and separate bet in which the player is betting that the dealer’s hole card is a ten or picture card. The amount that the casinos let you wager on the insurance bet is equal to one-half (or less) of the original bet. If the dealer ends up with a ten or picture card in the hole:
your blackjack insurance bet will win at 2 to 1 odds (i.e., you win the same amount as your original wager).
If the dealer doesn’t have a ten or picture card, then:
the insurance bet is lost, and play continues.
Suppose, for example, that you make a $10 bet on your original hand, you do not have a blackjack, and the dealer shows an ace. You decide to make the insurance bet so you place a $5 chip above your original bet on the semicircular line on the layout labeled “Insurance pays 2 to 1.” Let’s assume the dealer checks his hole card and it’s a ten giving him a blackjack. Here’s what happens.
You lose your original $10 bet on the hand to the dealer’s blackjack but win $10 on the $5 insurance bet. Overall you break even. (If you had not taken the insurance bet, you would have lost your original $10 bet on the hand because the dealer’s blackjack would have beaten you.)
So, isn’t it better to push on the hand by making the insurance bet rather than to lose the entire original bet? Seems logical doesn’t it? But here are the facts about the insurance bet.
Despite what the casinos would have you believe, the blackjack insurance bet is strictly a side bet that has nothing to do with increasing or decreasing your chances of winning the original bet.
When you make the insurance bet you are betting solely that the dealer’s hole card is a ten or picture card; you aren’t “insuring” anything.
It is a sucker bet, worthy of no consideration if you are a smart basic strategy player.
MATH OF BLACKJACK INSURANCE WAGER
In a single deck of cards, we know that the ratio of non-tens to tens is 36 to 16. Assume, after the cards are dealt on the first round, that the dealer is showing an ace and asks if you want to take insurance. If we ignore for the moment the composition of your two cards, then the ratio of non-ten to tens in the unplayed 51 cards is now 35 to 16. This means:
35 times that we made a $1 insurance bet, we would lose a total of $35 (the times the dealer wouldn’t have a ten in the hole)
16 times, she’d have the ten in the hole and we would win 16 x $2 = $32
Your net loss after making $51 worth of insurance bets is $3. You disadvantage by making the insurance bet is 5.9%, which is a horrible bet to make. Let’s now consider the case where the two cards in your hand are non-tens (e.g., a 3-9 or 12) and the dealer shows an ace upcard. This means the ratio of non-tens to tens in the remaining 49 cards is now 33 to 16, resulting in a net loss of $1 per $49 worth of bets or about 2.0%. This is still a bad bet. Let’s now consider the case where you are dealt a 20 (two 10s) and the dealer shows the ace. Some blackjack players argue that you should always insure a good hand (like 20) but not a bad hand (like the 12, above). They reason that if you take insurance on a 20, you will avoid losing money on a good hand should the dealer end up with blackjack. And even if the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, they continue, he’ll still have a tough time beating a 20, so blackjack insurance makes sense.
In fact, taking insurance when you hold a 20 is an even worse bet than taking insurance when you have a “bad hand.” Why? Because if you are holding a 20 made up of two ten-value cards, you’ve taken out of play two of the cards that the dealer needs for his hole card to have a natural. In the above example, the ratio of non-tens to tens in the remaining 49 cards is now 35 to 14 and you’d end up losing $7 out of $49 worth of insurance bets for a whopping 14.3% disadvantage. Sorry, but no matter how you look at it, Blackjack insurance is a very bad bet for a basic strategy player and should be avoided.
CASINO RULES FOR EVEN MONEY
Even money comes into play when the dealer shows an ace upcard and you have a blackjack. The dealer will ask you if you want “even money,” and if you say “yes,” she will pay you even money on your wager and remove your cards from play. Notice that will she will pay you even before she looks at her hole card to see if she has a blackjack.
Most players are perplexed when the dealer asks them if they want even money and usually they will ask the dealer or a fellow player for advice on what to do. The response is usually “take the even money because you can’t lose.”
Even money is equivalent to making an insurance bet when you have a blackjack hand. In fact, years ago, there was no such thing as “even money.” If you wanted to insure your blackjack, you made the insurance bet like everyone else.
But then some bright casino executive decided on making it even easier for players that have a blackjack to insure their hand, so he dreamed up the “even money” proposition. The fact that players can be paid even money right on the spot regardless of whether or not the dealer ends up with a blackjack appears too good to be true. Therefore, most players jump at the opportunity to take “even money” when it’s offered to them. After all, it’s an automatic win of one betting unit and you can’t lose even if the dealer ends up with a blackjack. The life of a blackjack player can’t get any better than this. Or, can it?
To convince you what a fool you are for taking even money, let me first convince you that even money is the same as insuring a blackjack hand.
Let’s look at the four possibilities that could occur if you are dealt a blackjack hand and the dealer has an ace upcard.
1st Possibility – You take insurance and the dealer has a blackjack. Result – you push on your blackjack hand but win $10 on your insurance bet. Net result: you win $10.
2nd Possibility – You take insurance and the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack. Result – you win $15 on your blackjack but lose the $5 insurance bet. Net result: you win $10.
3rd Possibility – You pass on the insurance bet and the dealer has a blackjack. Result – you push and win nothing.
4th Possibility – You pass on the insurance bet and the dealer doesn’t have blackjack. Result – you win $15 on your blackjack hand.
If you always insure your blackjack hand (possibilities 1 and 2), you always win even money regardless of the dealer’s outcome. This is why the casinos have reverted to the “even money” proposition when a player has a blackjack hand and the dealer shows an ace. Instead of letting a player go through the motions of making an insurance bet, the casinos will gladly give the player “even money” even before the dealer checks for a blackjack. The reason most players mistakenly believe you can’t lose when you take even money has to do with the outcome of possibility #3. If you don’t take insurance (or even money) then you risk the possibility that you will win nothing if the dealer has a blackjack. A certain one-unit win is better than no win at all, the reasoning goes, so the masses opt for taking the sure thing – even money. What most blackjack players fail to realize is that if they don’t take insurance (or even money) and the dealer DOES NOT a blackjack (the more likely scenario), they will win 1.5 times their original bet. So it all boils down to this – is it better to:
take the sure one-unit win by taking the even money, or
risk winning nothing some of the time, in order to win 1.5 units some of the time by passing up the even-money proposition?
The experts in the casino pit say to take the sure even-money payoff, rather than risk the possibility of pushing. But here is the rest of the story.
MATH OF EVEN MONEY
When you are dealt a natural and the dealer shows an ace, the dealer will end up with a ten in the hole for a blackjack 15 times out of 49, or about 30.6% of the time, in a single-deck game. Therefore 30.6% of the time you will win even money by insuring your blackjack hand. However, what if you don’t take insurance?
Then 30.6% of the times that the dealer has a blackjack you will win nothing (push, meaning no money is exchanged), but
The other 69.4% of the times you will win 1.5 times your bet.
In other words, you are more likely to win 1.5 units by passing up on the even money proposition then you are to push. If you do the math, overall you will average a win equal about to about 1.04 units every time you pass up the even money proposition.
NOW WHICH IS BETTER?
Win 1 unit for certain by taking even money or
Win 1.04 units on average by declining to take even money.
To put it another way, every time you take even money you’ll be giving up about 4% of your profits. Blackjack is tough enough to beat without giving back your profits to the casinos.
If you are still on the fence about even money, look at it from the casino’s perspective. They know that a player’s natural has an expected value greater than one unit when the dealer shows the ace so they will gladly pay the player only 1 unit for their natural. (Wouldn’t you do the same?)
The bottom line on the insurance bet if you are a basic strategy player is this:
Never insure any hand “good” or “bad”
Never take even money when you have a natural
Is there ever a time when the insurance bet ever becomes profitable to the player? The answer is yes and that’s if you are reasonably certain over one-third of the unseen cards are tens and picture cards. The only way you’ll know this is by keeping track of the cards as they are played (i.e., card counting).
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Although millions of players play blackjack, the vast majority of them misplay their hands.
The basic playing strategy is the most efficient way to play all your hands.
Players who want to reduce the house edge to less than 1% need to learn the basic strategy for surrender, pair splitting, doubling down, and hitting and standing.
Surrender is a playing option whereby a player can forfeit his initial hand and automatically lose half of his wager.
Late surrender is the common form of surrender. You can surrender your hand only after the dealer checks that she doesn’t have a blackjack.
Early surrender allows you to surrender before the dealer checks for a blackjack. It is more valuable for a player than late surrender but rarely offered.
The surrender playing strategy allows players to minimize their losses when they are holding a weak hand against a strong dealer upcard (e.g., 16 against a dealer’s 10 upcard).
The pair splitting strategy allows players to either win more when they are the favorite, loss less when they are the underdog, or turn a losing hand into a winning hand.
The doubling down strategy gives the player the opportunity to go on the offensive and bet more money when they are the favorite.
The hitting and standing strategy will allow you to make the best percentage play to minimize your losses and maximize your gains.
Insurance is a side bet that is offered to players when the dealer shows an ace upcard.
When you take the insurance bet, you are betting that the dealer has a 10-value card in the hole and a blackjack.
Payoff for a winning insurance bet is 2 to 1.
Dealer will offer a player even money when he has a blackjack and the dealer has an ace upcard.
If the player accepts even money his original bet will be immediately paid off at 1 to 1.
Even money is the same as insurance.

We asked marketing experts what their recommended growth hacking tools were, we gathered up the answers, and here are the most commonly mentioned tools.Let's take a look!1. AhrefsUsing Ahrefs is an integral part of our growth marketing strategy and one of the best growth hacking tools. Here is how we use this tool: Keyword research is the most essential part of growth hacking. However, it is a time-consuming and tedious process. With the help of Ahrefs, we can easily find trending keywords which our target audience is looking for. We produce quality content using those keywords to improve search engine ranking and overall ROI. Ahrefs helps us in keeping an eye on our competitors. We can completely understand why our competitors are ranking so high and what we need to do to outrank them. First, we find out what competitors are ranking for, then create similar content. Next, we find keywords that our competitors are not targeting and may not have the highest search volume. We target these so that we can rank faster by avoiding high-competition keywords. We find opportunities that we have missed out on by uncovering how our competitors have been building their backlinks. Then, we reach out to the sites that have linked to our competitors and try to get a link for our site from them. The ResultsI've 2 specific examples of relevant data/results (how Ahrefs helped us to increase our organic traffic):Links/mentions for GigWorker (a new site of our company) from the likes of HR.com, MerlineOne, and Business2Community). We have yet to see a sharp increase in our organic traffic, but within only 2 months or so, we have earned unique backlinks from over 150 referring domains apart from a continuous improvement in our DR and UR as this screenshot shows. We have used the same strategy for our partner site, Ridester.com. The result? First, traffic increased from 0 to 253K unique monthly visitors. Second, traffic increased again from 253K to 650K after 7 months. Finally, after 12 months, it increased from 650K to over 1.5 million unique monthly visitors. 2. OutgrowOutgrow is a tool that allows you to create interactive quizzes which, later on, you can implement on your own website. It's a great addition to your growth hacking tools list for adding to your "top of funnel" marketing strategy.Quizzes are an exciting way of hacking growth and virality (if done right). With one simple quiz, you can collect up to a couple of thousands of new leads. To do that you have to first do research on what interests your audience the most. It must be personal, it must move curiosity, and it must make people curious to find out what's the end result. You should have really in-depth and thoughtful quiz results. This will determine the number of shares that will ignite growth.Quizzes are a great growth hacking tool as people like to share their results (if these are worth sharing). Thus, spend time on those, make them creative, and well-sounding.This tool really helps build leads and increase shares of the quiz if it's of high enough value and interest to your target market.3. BuzzSumoBuzzSumo is one of my favorite growth hacking tools. It's a perfect tool for anyone working within content marketing, email or social media outreach, and search engine optimization.I use it for several things:To follow all the trending, most shared and linked to content within the different topics. This is useful for keeping up to date, but also to see what type of content works right now so I can get inspiration to make something similar. For instance, generating blog post headlines to use.To get notified about other websites linking to me or linking to sites I consider as my competitors. I can then share that content or perhaps reach out to the site linking to my competitors in order to try to get a link too.I also use it to discover influencers and other people interested in my vertical. This can be used to find people to follow or reach out to and see if they could share my content. Similar to the above benefit, if an influencer has engaged with similar content in your niche, it's likely they will be open to sharing or engaging with your content. Especially if it's of high quality.4. VYPERWithout traffic, you will have a hard time building a business. Not only that but now you also need followers and an engaged audience if you plan to sell anything online. It's a growth marketing tool that helps brands build traffic, engagement, leads, and customers. It does this by using contests, giveaways, and reward programs. The reason this tool works so well is the gamification and incentivization aspect. By giving people the incentive to share and engage, you can build an audience that is much easier to monetize. Not only that, but all of the built-in sharing also generates a ton of new customers. (Bonus that there's a free plan).5. MailshakeEmail outreach can be a gift or the most damaging tactics to your brand if abused. That's why Mailshake makes the list of top growth hacking tools.Without the correct settings and email limitations, you will end up in the spam folder faster than your recipient can read the subject line. This growth tool helps you craft the perfect cold outreach email. It makes sure you have the right subject length, link number, and quality email address to make sure your emails find your leads' inbox.Using Mailshake with a number of other tools (mostly ones to attain the contact information for your leads) is a powerful combination.6. PhantomBusterOne of the most popular tools submitted to the growth hacking tools list!PhantomBuster tool helps you quickly grow Facebook groups that you have just made. I have made many facebook groups for my clients and this is my go-to method to get engagement for their posts and drive traffic to their websites. In the post is a step-by-step for how to use PhantomBuster tool to capture your competitors' audiences. You can also use Phantombuster for Linkedin and Instagram profiles with these Facebook URLs which can help in branding, advertising, and other stuff.7. BonjoroIf you are looking to grow your business, a critical cog to that success is your ability to create engagement and conversation with your users.Bonjoro is a video emailing tool that integrates with many CRMs and ESPs and allows you to quickly send out a personalized video to a prospect. One use case I leverage this for was one of my brands HGC for our game Arkon. This tool is a little more advanced than others on the growth hacking tools list but it's definitely worth trying! We did a test with 100 people who had purchased our product, sending 50 of them Bonjoro generated thank you emails that were custom-tailored and sending 50 standards thank you emails. We received a 64% response rate from our Bonjoro cohort (32/50) and 16% from our control (8/50).From our Bonjoro cohort, we received substantially more reviews, future purchases, and even referrals (we ask people how they heard about us and found a handful that listed people from the Bonjoro cohort! Using video and email to increase engagement is a growth hack that's working exceptionally well right now!8. ColibriColibri helps you increase the online visibility of your brand and increases your SEO efforts. You can get statistics and information on the people searching for your competitors. It's also an SEO driven growth hacking tool that helped me make essential changes in my online marketing, which ultimately increased the conversion rate. It also shows you where your customers are engaging online so that you may take part in relevant conversations across the web. You can even integrate it with Google Analytics to check the stats and measure the success of your outreach strategies. Colibri can also perform an on-page SEO analysis to get your pages ranked higher on search engines. This should be the bare minimum when it comes to optimizing your website for SEO.9. QuuuQuuu Promote is a great tool that helps your blog posts go viral. It's a pretty awesome growth hack to jump-start new blog posts that don't have too much traffic yet.Other than that, we use the Facebook retargeting pixel to show our ads to people who have already visited our site and blog. The more a person visits our website, the higher the likelihood of converting them into a customer because they trust you more. Facebook retargeting pixels are a great way to get them to come back to your site again and again. 10.
