The Masked Singer: S8 E4 Running Commentary (Andrew Lloyd Webber Night)

Watching this on a delay because of the NLCS Game 2, but this is the episode that got preempted last week because of the NLDS game between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies experiencing a rain delay of several hours. Reportedly this episode aired in Canada last week as scheduled, but I don’t think I saw any definitive spoilers (any that were posted on Wikipedia were deleted within hours). The Phillies and the San Diego Padres are tied 1-1 in the series and Game 3 will be in Philadelphia on Friday.

Tonight has three brand new Masks, as Harp 🎶 is already through to the semifinals. (As a reminder, I believe Harp 🎶 is Amber Riley.) Once again, these three will perform, two will be eliminated, and the one remaining will be made the evening’s “King/Queen of Masked Singer” and sing again next week. As always, I post before seeing any unmaskings, so don’t take these as spoilers.

Maize 🌽: It’s corn! A big lump with knobs, it has the juice! I can’t imagine a more beautiful thing! 😂 I had to. Okay, on with the clues! A billboard with three stars, seems to be female. The “Unicorn of Shows” and a tiny Statue of Liberty. I also saw a calendar with a wedding cake on it. Maybe she does Hallmark movies? And Tori Spelling was the Unicorn 🦄 in S1, so maybe she’s worked with Tori Spelling, or did shows produced by Tori’s father, Aaron Spelling? Sounds a little bit on the older side when she sings. Side note: Even though I’m an atheist, I love the songs from Jesus Christ Superstar (she’s singing “Heaven on Their Minds”, the opening song of the musical and the movie, sung by Judas Iscariot in the show, and she definitely borrowed from Carl Anderson’s version in the movie). Her first onstage clue is “Maize has fans frozen to their seats”. But they’re all thinking this is a man? Now I’m confused.

Mermaid 🧜‍♀️: Referenced a Tina Turner song. Had a major accident that set back her career. Definitely sounds like an older woman, although then again I thought Maize was an older woman, too. I seem to remember hearing about a certain disco legend dealing with a major injury at the height of her career on her episode of Behind the Music. That woman was Gloria Gaynor. (She had an onstage accident where she fell over a monitor while performing and had to undergo surgery, which led to years of chronic pain.) And her signature song, “I Will Survive”, is preserved in the Library of Congress.

Robo Girl 🤖 👧🏻: A sign reading “Cats”, a surfboard, worked with Pharrell, two jars of honey, and two notes on a piece of sheet music reading B and B. The surfboard could mean she won a Teen Choice Award, as that is its trophy. Sounds on the younger side. I was thinking Bebe Rexha, but the singing voice doesn’t sound like her. I also thought of Jennette McCurdy (who costarred in both iCarly and Sam and Cat), but I don’t know if she’s sung. But at this time I cannot put a name to her voice. I’m stumped.

Happy Thursday peeps!!! Here is my MLB Immaculate Grid number 374!!!

This has to be the most random grid I've put together. There really is no rhyme or reason to it aside from Wade Boggs having pitched at least one game and a 40+ WAR for his career. After that (and Nolan Ryan as Houston's 40+ WAR Career) I really had to dig deep in the baseball card box to find the other seven players.

I rememebered working in the bar for that game that Reyes pitched for the Mets. It was something like a 20 point deficit when he took the mound. How I rememberd that Josh Harrison pitched at least once for the White Sox? I have no clue. I just did.

Evan Longoria for a 40+ career WAR got Tampa was a no brainer. He was their franchise player for many years. Mannywood dropped significantly ending up with Tampa Bay, the Chisox and Taiwan before hanging up the cleats. Joey Bats was also a former shell of himself playing in Tampa Bay and the Mets after leaving Toronto.

Mike Scott and the Mets had quite the history. Going back to when Scott made life a living hell for the 1986 Mets. They were convinced that he was scuffing the ball against them, collecting multiple buckets of game used balls to catch him. And they couldn't. Scott from almost single handedly derailed the hopes of the 108-win Mets. Aside from winning the 1986 NL Cy Young Award, Scott went 2-0 against the Mets in the NLCS with a 0.50 ERA, 2 complete games and 1 shutout. In total he gave up 8 hits, struck out 19 Mets while walking only 1. He was so good that he became the first player to win the NLCS MVP on a losing team. Niger civil servants begin strike Wednesday

Civil servants in Niger State have declared an indefinite strike over the failure of the government to meet their demands. The civil servants, acting under the umbrella of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, had presented some demands to the state government which the NLC said the state reneged upon. It, however, said its doors were still open for negotiation. The congress in a letter to Governor Mohammed Bago, dated February 19 and signed by the Chairman, Idrees Lafene, and the chairman of the Trade Union Congress,l, Ibrahim Gana, said the strike would begin 8am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The letter was made available to newsmen on Tuesday. It read in part “We are writing in furtherance to our earlier letter of ultimatum Ref no. OL/NS/040/GEN/Vol 4/29 dated 20/12/23 and the deadlock on settlement of issues as a result of negotiations with Niger State Government Committee. “We wish to formally inform the Government that effective 8am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 that Niger State workers shall commence an indefinite strike action until our demands are comprehensively met. “Meanwhile, we wish to reiterate that our doors are open for negotiation subject to : Conveyance of formal invitation, reversal of all appointments in dispute ie, Executive Directors Finance, Executive Directors Admin and Executive Directors Operations, Chairman, members and permanent commissioners of local Government Service Commission and Civil Service Commission, Directors General DGs of some agencies “A clear statement by the government on payment of wage award. “We also wish to stress that the idea of appointing Permanent Secretaries who are not eligible and within the service will no longer be tolerated by the Organised Labour. “Accordingly we call on the government to withdraw the recent appointment of a Vice Principal on secondment as a Permanent Secretary to allow for career progression from within. “We also call on the government to desist from victimising teachers and members from the educational sector as a result of the recent debate by some primary school pupils in Agaie LGA.” The organised labour reiterated it’s commitment to the governor’s New Niger Agenda, noting that there was no response to previous correspondence.
