Newxie brings the joy of nixies without the 170V power supply 💡🕰️✨

If there's one thing that melts our hearts, it's a nixie clock - we built one 20 years ago!

but nixies are hard to find now that we don't hit up the MIT swapfest at 7am anymore

well we saw this funky faux nixie clock

and realized they're just using the same 1.14" TFTs we stock already

so why not re-spin the breakout into a skinny right-angle-mount version? Instead of card edge, we have 2x7 right angle headers - both rows are the same contact, but this way, we get more mechanical stability. We kept the level shifting to work with 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers but dropped the micro SD card. You could stack these side by side on a breadboard with as little as 0.7" pitch!

Beginning of the journey

Late one night in January 2023, I got bored, opened Google, then posted to Twitter:

Holy crud. I just did the briefest search & my resources are very poor but it's (circumstantially) looking already like maybe my ancestry on my father's side really IS Pennsylvania Dutch…? 🤔

And yes, I know the Pennsylvania Dutch are in fact German.

I spent my entire life having no heritage, no culture, nothing to come from or belong to. That night, with only my paternal grandfather's name to go on, I began to learn the answer. My "homeland" was indeed what I'd been told it was. Yet I soon found I had many other homelands as well.

I hope to share that journey, and related tangents, here. Please forgive my ignorance as I do so, I'm just beginning to learn where I come from.

Tie On A Turn: The Talley Celebrates Its First Anniversary! A Harbor Herald Exclusive!

Summer is surely riding high as you read this, lovely Harbor Herald readers! Whether you subscribe to this paper; are borrowing it from a friend; picked it up because you saw your picture beneath the headline and want to frame it; or are frowning at these words as you evacuate your bowels ten moons from time of writing, this reporter assures you that she is writing this installation of her column in high spirits and with a few delicious drinks straining through her liver. [Ed. note: Captain Lluanswys is fined by the fragment every time she creates “sentences” like these.]

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Talley’s first anniversary performance this evening. The setlist pulled no punches; indeed, it occasionally doled them out, either lyrically or---in some notable, unnamed cases---physically between a few performers, and the enthusiastic energy suffused the packed tavern from start to finish. Those of us fortunate enough to be in the audience hardly had time to order a second, third, or fourth drink, seeing as we were dancing the polish from Nico'to's floorboards with every well-paced number. 

Artists that took the stage frequently reminisced on how they found their way to this much-loved venue deep within the Black Shroud. Some came to the stage for the first time, their performances pulling from their unique backgrounds from all over the star. Others sang more familiar tunes followed by debuts; eager to look down from the stage to the seething crowd dancing and creating our own constellations to spell their music, their lyrics into flashing lights.

These rhythm-driven illuminations held aloft in honor of rising and familiar stars guide many of us through the turns of sun and moon. A clever lyrical twist; a dancer meeting every drumbeat with a shift of hips that draws all eyes; a wailing riff on guitar or viol or keyboard that gets the whole room surging. All of these stick in our minds as we leave the show, half-deafened, full-drunk, given a lightness in our heels to carry us through the next few days, no matter how heavy they may seem.

Wherever your long and winding roads may lead you, dear readers, I sincerely hope that one of the bright waymarks along the way is The Talley. Even if it is your first time stopping in, it somehow feels so good to be home again. This reporter, for one, wishes the venue itself a very happy nameday, and looks forward to many more bright spots to chart her course by in the cycles to come.

Why did you choose your URL?

I wanted something that was short and contained a lot of vowels (because I just like them) and doesn’t mean anything (then later I learned that it is actually a name, but, okay, whatever. :D)

I had two for my messy photos, and another one what is just a try-blog, but contains nothing and back then in the early days, I did a sideblog that was multifandom, but then now this - the main - is my only blog that I use, I’m tired lazy to separate things...

I don’t use queue nowadays, but when I used it, I just tagged as “queue” (I’m boring :D)

Why did you start your blog in the first place?

I came for the fanarts, stayed for the gifs, I guess. Back then I was very, very into Tron Legacy and one of my friends showed me that basically here is the Tron fandom and here are the cool fanarts, so that’s the main reason I joined here. :) Back then people talked more to each other and it was more of a family-like thing - at least for me. I can’t really draw, but I was fascinated by the gifs here (in 2012 tumblr only allowed like 1MB size only :)), so I learned how to do it (it wasn’t easy, I just found tutorials after that I found out myself how to make them :’D), and still amazed by other peeps’ awesome works! ^^

Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

It’s Captain Cold and I’m cool with him, don’t really want to change him. :)

Why did you choose your header?

The absolutely gorgeous fanmade movie: Detroit Evolution’s cast are just amazing and funny. :)

It’s the Wentworth Miller talking about how to deal with depression set (I’m very glad that this has the most notes. <3)

I don’t know exacty. :) I don’t easily follow someone, but when I (finally) start following, I mostly never unfollow them.

Mal flopped down across Teagan’s lap, stretching their arms above their head and smearing dust along Teagan’s pale pink skirts. “It’s too damn hot. Why do we gotta live in the desert in summer?”

Nixie laughed roughly as she leaned on her cane, “It ain’t even that hot, ya monster!”

Mal rolled their eyes and sighed loudly, “Well, not all of us are used to living out in the middle of nowhere, Auntie Nixie.”

Gesturing with her free hand, Nixie limped inside her house. Mal grumbled curses that no child should know under their breath as their bare feet touch the scorching sand. As they hopped to their boots and ran after Nixie, Teagan silently laughed to herself and leaned back as she waited for the two to return.

Mal hummed happily as Nixie passed them a cool glass of lemonade. They pressed it to their face and chest for a moment before gulping the sweet, cold drink down. Nixie laughed and wiped some sweat out from under her eyepatch as she downed her own drink, albeit with more control than the child she was babysitting. 

The two stayed inside for a bit longer, enjoying their drinks and talking, until Cholla bounded into the house with a loud, reverberating bark. He ran into Mal’s chair, stumbled back, and shook his body, covering Mal and the surrounding area in water. Mal shrieked in surprise and laughed as they pet Cholla. His tongue flopped out of the side of his mouth as he leaned his head against Mal’s hand. Nixie sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose as she thought of the work that Cholla’s entrance would bring, but Mal’s eyes lit up with excitement as they ran towards the door. 

Teagan was still under the porch, protected by the balcony as she napped. But beyond her sleeping form, the world had transformed. The sky had darkened and sheets of rain poured down, transforming the dry, hot desert into a cool, pleasant, muddy area. Mal giggled and launched themselves into a muddy puddle as quickly and as high as an eight-year-old child could jump.

They covered themselves in cooling mud as they laid, facing the oncoming raindrops. The rain created streaks in the mud on Mal's face, and they sighed contentedly while the thunder rumbled overhead. 

All around them, flowers were opening, and the plants became greener with the promise of life in each drop. The air became heavy with the sweet scent of creosote as the plant greedily drank up the rain. 

Nixie leaned against her doorframe with a gentle smile on her face. She loved seeing her home come to life in the cooling mist of a gentle thunderstorm. She startled when Teagan came into view, as she came up to Nixie on her blind side, but relaxed as her girlfriend's arms encircled her waist. 

"Ain't it fun to watch the kid play around in the muck?"

Teagan's breath tickled Nixie's ear as she laughed before she signed, "You're just saying that because we don't have to clean them up."

Nixie shrugged and laughed a little herself, "Maybe, but that sure do help it!"

This shield combines the retro charm of Nixie tubes with modern Arduino Cloud connectivity

Nixie tubes are fun little devices that act like seven-segment display modules in that they can be lined up together in order to form a larger number by showing digits 0 through 9. One maker, Marcin Saj, has created a unique project that uses a series of six Nixie tubes that can show the current time, temperature, and humidity all within a compact footprint. It is also able to receive commands via the Arduino Cloud service and an Alexa skill, thus enabling users to toggle various functions on or off with a smart speaker or phone. 

Saj’s IoT Nixie Clock Shield has an RGB backlight that can be easily adjusted via the Arduino Cloud’s RGB color picking tool, which allows for the device to match almost any environment. The built-in Nixie power supply is great as it lessens the chances of being shocked with 170V, and each tube is user-replaceable if it fails. The shield’s PCB has a header for plugging in an Arduino Uno, Nano, or Micro board, but it is best used with the Nano 33 IoT for cloud connectivity. The onboard DS3231 real-time clock module is able to keep the time accurately even when the power to the rest of the clock is removed.

1. Why did you choose you url?

It predates my tumblr acc back to when I had a destiel insta. I can’t remember my og name for that account but when the s8 finale dropped and the angels fell, I changed it to this and then I used the same name for my tumblr, AO3, and Youtube. I kept them for consistency (and bc i’m lazy) even tho I’d faded from the fandom.

A few, but the only one I actually use is @deancasweddingscrapbook

Since about 2013/2014. When was the first M*shapocalypse? I think I joined a couple of months after that.

Yeah, I started using a queue a few weeks ago to not flood my feed so much. My tag is not very original but I based it one of my favourite spn episodes, the one that actually made me decide to start watching the show for good: #FreeToBeQueueAndMe

I was on spn instagram and all of the good memes were from tumblr so I figured why not just cut out the middle man?

It’s chibi coldflash fanart, my other big OTP and what was my main fandom until the destiel resurgence of Nov 5th. I drew it for valentines day last year.

It’s one of my destiel manips. I made it to celebrate the wedding. This is Dean and Cas waking up together on their first day as a married couple <3
