Renji walked into Rukia office . “Hey Rukia, d-“ he cut his self off when he heard crying from the shorter girl . “What’s wrong ...?” His voice dropping a bit in concern . He was concern for Rukia . Did something happen ? Did some one die ? Was Byakuya being to harsh towards her for any reason ? He didn’t know. Many thoughts ran through his head as he walked over to her .

“what happen ...?” He asked softer then normal . He hated seeing anyone he knew cry in front of him .

He’s broken out of his thoughts by the woman’s words, face somehow paling and reddening at the same time. Oh god he had been staring at her, hadn’t he? He hadn’t meant to! Honestly! It’s just that seeing her had reminded him that he zanpakuto was an ice type and it made him start to wonder just what effect if any that had on her biological ability to resist the cold. Maybe they could study her and produce some kind of anti chill to give to people when in inhospitable climates. 

And in a rush to flusteredly express all of that to the mostly unfamiliar woman, he somehow winds up with just

the phone-charms he was eyeing were so cute....... just the right amount of chubby to counteract the tiny and delicate features on the rabbit’s face. he hadn’t seen this particular mascot before but it must be pretty popular, considering there was only this one left in the store. he contemplated buying them. but their cuteness factor might decrease when paired with his beat-up phone...................

          The Rear-Admiral had finally touched down on Sabaody Archipelago after completing a relatively uneventful tour of duty that had taken him out to Paradise with his fleet for the last six months or so. Now, after reporting back to Headquarters and having done the proper fleet handover to his replacement, Shinji was more than pleased to accept the significantly cushy role of reinforcing the law in this mangrove island. It was only be a temporary assignment until he was activated again to patrol the waters of the Grand Line, but Shinji would take whatever break he could get. 

          Besides, it was not bad to be land-bound for a while...at least until he started to get restless again with the need to sail the seas... 

          The lanky blond was lazily moseying through one of the less populated sectors, seeking to visit a small record store which he last remembered should be around here somewhere - the shops in Saboady were always moving around quiet mysteriously - when he first caught sight of that petite woman, her back turned to him. 

          His sauntering steps slowed, the white military coat with the absolute ‘seigi’ insignia rippling over his back at the change of pace. He stared. 

          ...Not at her, no. But at the blade secured at her side. Was it...

          Yes. It was. Sode no Shirayuki. 

          That katana, he knew once upon a time. A relic believed to have been lost...many years ago. Together with a friend who had gone as well, all too soon. It was unmistakable, one of the most beautiful blades in the world, forged on an island that no longer existed. 

          Shinji could not ignore this mystery even if he wanted to.

               “ ...S’cuse me. ” he tapped on the petite woman’s shoulder, patiently seeking her attention. “ That sword of yers, where did ya- ”

          His drawling query died on his tongue when the woman turned, and his gaze met her distinct features. Cognac eyes widened imperceptibly in surprise - he had just seen a ghost, today. 

               “ ...Ru...kia-chan...? ”

Purple eyes blinked in surprise at his question and she wonders why such a question all of a sudden. She can control her body temperature, but Rukia is not thinking that would be necessary at the moment. "A little bit, yes. Why are you asking? Are you feeling cold?"

“Uh, No. I-” 

It was an answer he wasn’t expecting. But that made sense considering he had accidentally asked the wrong question. Would it be easier to explain himself? Or should he just play it off like that is what he meant the whole time? Either one feels embarrassing to him, but his question did have a chance of feeling too personal now that he was thinking about it. And she might be embarrassed.

A half a beat passed and the shinigami shoved a hand into his lab coat pocket, drawing out a piece of fabric. Flusteredly he shoved it towards Rukia, showing that it was a woolen hat. 

“Here.”
