上上籤 Loss of The Holy Seal by YinYin. Only 5 chapters, I read the whole thing. Plot: Heaven is in a frantic mess due to the Holy Seal being lost in the mortal realm. Which uncovers a story about a water goddess, Ling Yu, who feels helpless when she can not help humans who are suffering from natural disasters. Set in modern day with Chinese mythical elements.

地獄遊行 lit. Hell Parade (no official English title I can find) by 布克 L.buBu (the artist is on tumblr @/lbubu) Plot: Fantasy setting. Protag Aili was born with incredible magician abilities compared to a lot of normals but he seems to be uninterested in his magician abilities to save the world.

異人茶跡 Formosa Oolong Tea by 張季雅 Kiya. Plot: The story revolves around the endeavours of John Dodd, a Scottish merchant, and his comprador Li Chunsheng, during the Qing Dynasty. It explores their significant contributions to the growth and establishment of the tea industry in northern Taiwan. This one is pretty good, if you're tea drinker this is some good history!

狗臉的歲月─記1629梯 My Life As A Dog by 李鴻欽 Li Hong Chin. Plot: The main protagonist enlists in the army and tells a story of his time there. This one isn't my thing but Yiyong probably likes a bit of a "lad" comic.

閻王帖 Invitation of Yama by 柚子 You Zih. This one is fun I like it, it reminds me of Hoozuki No Reitetsu and Fukigen Na Mononokean. The protagonist possesses Ying Yang eyes meaning he can see ghosts. After an accident, he meets a guy who wears a mask and is a worker in the underworld. Mask guy's weapon is a massive calligraphy brush!

無名歌 lit. Untitled Song by ROCKAT 搖滾貓. This one is on webtoon! Protagonist Taiyang had a rock music dream, now as a "failure" adult he works in an entertainment company as a manager. He bumps into a girl busking on the street who happened to recognise him from his early music days and has every album (2) his band and him once produced. Then onwards he rediscovers his love for music... probably, I didn't finish it lol

Okay I did read this one though, even though I'm not sure if Yiyong has it or not:

守娘 Tan-Tsiu-Niu by 小峱峱 Nownow. This is a phenomenal heavy read. It's inspired by Tan Tsiu Niu, a women who lived in the Qing Dynasty that died of a tragic murder. Story has themes of folklore, ghosts and superstitions. Main protagonist Jie Niang grew up in a family who did not force foot binding onto her, however that caused a lot of gossip around her "big feet" and how she could ever get married off like that. Through an incident of a women in her village, she begins to uncover what horrors the villagers have been doing to baby girls and women. Let's just say I'm not the same person after reading this.

Episode 35 Breakdown

Dr Bai grabs Seamstress Miao by the throat, demanding to know who Snow Wolf is, but she refuses to unmask her leader. He leaves after threatening to kill them all if anything happens to Nurse Bai again. Electrician Liu Simao sees Officer Ding watch the shop, and creeps in the back door to advise Seamstress Miao that she has been compromised. She immediately sets out to burn several papers and a book before being stabbed by Liu Simao. He tries to take her bag but she holds tight, and he has to flee empty handed when the police arrive, and she dies without any confession. Searching her shop, the police team find her radio equipment, maps of the air raid shelter location and the negatives of the blueprint photos.

On the last day of the experiment, Expert Chief Chu returns to the lab and instructs Ji Danyang to make the coundown and announcement of the experiment's successful end. The cabin team are helped out of the sealed cabin, rejoicing in the sunlight and Ji Danyang finds He Xiwan still inside. She completes logging the last page of data and gives it to him before collapsing from exhaustion.

Master Welder Niu finds the hidden compartment in the cabin with the empty phosphorus bottle inside, concluding it was made by Assistant Rui. Police Captain Chen debriefs Officer Xu who participated in the experiment, focussing on the movements of Nurses Bai and Shanshan, but is at a loss as to how they would know they would get inside. Police Captain Chen has the Hospital Chief review the medical checks of the cabin participants and they discover that the expert who collapsed shouldn't have been given clearance at all. He compiles a list of the medical staff involved in the fitness checks and the Police Chief suggests allowing Nurse Shanshan back to work to see what reaction is provoked.

Officer Hongmei, still recovering from her mercury poisoning, visits Dr Bai and informs him of the seamstresses murder and identity as a spy, and that they'd found her father's body with the help of an anonymous key. Ji Danyang takes a break from analysing the cabin data to visit Officer Hongmei in hospital and they discuss where they might go now this part of the project is coming to an end.

In the expert's office, Lei Peizheng notices one of his titanium samples is missing and reports it to the police team. They check Factory Chief Han's samples and find the missing piece amongst them, but one of his absent. Factory Chief Han questions Secretary Lu about the missing titanium, stating that if a man makes a mistake he should have the courage to correct it, but Secretary Lu still denies his involvement.

Secretary Lu is angry and meets Nurse Bai, demanding  to know once and for all if she is a spy and when she doesn't commit to an answer he tells her he plans to confess and if she if a spy to run. She slaps him. Their altercation is noticed by Nurse Zhang Ling and Nurse Leader Ge and Nurse Bai sees Nurse Ge watching from the window.

He Xiwan is all about the mission! Good grief girl you'll go down in history but you'll go down with mercury poisoning too.

"I can't be like Li Guangming". Ok so Secretary Lu does know what happened to Security Captain Li and is FINALLY realising he's in the same spot. Good for him for finally deciding to confess, although will that slap make him change his mind? I really hope he does come forward on his own. He knows the scrutiny is closing in and so does Nurse Bai now. What's she going to do? She can only pin so much on Nurse Shanshan (which I'm still fuming about btw)

Seamstress Miao stabbed in the back (or front) by your cohort. That's what your loyalty to the wrong people will get you.

So who's left now? The still unidentified Snow Wolf, Nurse Bai (who is suspected), fake Li Qiuchen (who is suspected), electrician Liu Simao (who is confirmed and being searched for). At this point Nurse Bai and Fake Li haven't heard about the murder of the seamstress yet but it's not a secret in town so it wont be long. Do they even have another base of operation in town now that the seamstress shop is compromised? How will they pass messages along now?

3 episodes to go! What am I expecting? Whoever the fuck Snow Wolf is, they're going to have to show their face for one final attempt on the project (maybe trying to grab or destroy the data before it can be transported to Beijing?)

As a rule, the commited spies have died (Zhang A Shui, Lai Guangrun, Assitant Rui and Seamstress Miao) and the coerced traitors have been imprisoned (Security Captain Li, the messenger & the digging team). So Liu Simao and Fake Li wont survive, and Secretary Lu will be imprisoned... but what about Nurse Bai? She's a fully committed spy, but she's also one of our leads. I can't imagine her being killed off, it would be too tragic for our other leads. I'd wondered earlier about the possibility of a change of heart upon learning it was the KMT who killed her parents (the reveal of which I still expect) but she's done so much more sabotage since then that there's little to no room left for turning around. Will she just be imprisoned? Or will Dr Bai try and convince her to run away?

Câu chuyện chiếc ipad

Tôi còn nhớ rất rõ, cái ngày mà được mẹ mua cho cả bộ ipad và apple pencil này. Cũng gần 35tr, lúc đó vào năm 2017, cách đây 7 năm. Từ nhỏ đến lớn mẹ luôn chăm sóc tôi kĩ càng và cưng chiều nhưng lại khó khi nào mua một món đồ công nghệ đắt tiền. Lúc đấy nhà cũng không khá giả gì mấy, nhưng mẹ nói đó giờ vì toàn dùng đồ cũ nên nhân dịp sinh nhật 21 mua cho tôi một chiếc máy mới để vẽ. Cái cảm giác có một chiếc máy mới được bóc seal, hoàn toàn là của mình từ đầu thật khó tả. Lúc đấy tôi thấy mình thật giàu có và trendy.

Vậy mà thứ 2 vừa rồi, vừa sau chuyến đi Singapore cùng cả nhà về. Tôi thấy nó vẫn nằm im chổng chơ trên bàn trang điểm với cục pin phồng to đội lên mặt kính cảm ứng vỡ tan. Tự nhiên tôi thấy thương nó quá chừng. Đương nhiên một phần phồng pin vì do con Cá chơi điện tử, nhưng bản thân tôi biết rõ, nó bị hư là tại tôi. Tôi không sử dụng và chân trọng nó. Đúng là lần này mình có một bài học phải ghi nhớ. Tất cả những đồ dùng tiếp theo mình sẽ ghi nhớ cảm giác này để cân nhắc trc khi mua.

Mình nhận ra càng ngày bản thân càng dựa dẫm và thoải mái bên cạnh Anh. Chì có một chiếc ipad thôi cũng mếu máo khóc nhè. Anh vẫn thật nhẹ nhàng ôm mình, lắng nghe mình mếu máo về chiếc ipad mẹ tặng. Anh ấy có một cách xoa dịu thật kì lạ, anh hòi đâu phải là món đàu tiên mẹ mua cho em. Em có nhớ chiếc váy đầu tiên mẹ mua ko? Em còn giữ ko? Vậy chiếc xe máy đàu tiên thì sao? Đột nhiên mình nhận ra, xung quanh mình toàn những đồ mẹ mua mà mình cũng đang lãng phí nó. Ngay cả cuộc sống này, linh hồn này của là cái đầu tiên và duy nhất mẹ cho.

Anh còn bảo, mình phải thương anh, nếu không anh sẽ vỡ ra như ipad. Mình thấy vừa buồn cười vừa thương. Đúng thật là có những lúc, mình quên nâng niu anh. Quên mất rằng Anh là điều mình chân quý nhất, anh cũng có thể vỡ ra, cũng có thể ra khỏi cuộc đời mình nếu không đủ tình thuong.

Mình nhớ lúc mình mếu máo nói với Cá là ko biét ipad có buồn c ko. Nó lại lí nhí trả lời Sao ipad buồn c được, phải buồn e chứ. Lúc đó mình vừa buồn cười lại thấy thương nó vô cùng. Tính ra từ nhỏ đến lớn, nó cũng chưa từng có một món đồ nào mới của riêng nó. Toàn là dùng đồ cũ, cũng như mình hồi nhỏ vậy. Mình thật sự mong nó có thể được đi Úc, bước ra thế giới, theo đuổi tự do, có cuộc sống của riêng mình. Rời vòng tay bao bọc của chị và Bác để trưởng thành hơn.

Tự nhiên mình chưa đi, mà đã bắt đầu thấy lưu luyến khoảng thời gian bên cạnh mọi người rồi.

Nhưng rồi chúng ta sẽ bay đi và trở về phải không.

Ever since we saw Yuuji's mother first appeared in a flashback, I keep thinking about his birth circumstances. There's a story about the Kosodate Yūrei or The Child-Raising Yūrei. You can also read it here which includes a Chinese version.

The story originated from China's Yijian Zhi (夷堅志), a collection of strange tales by Hong Mai, a Southern Song scholar. In the Chinese version, a mother-to-be died in childbirth and thereafter, a pale woman visited a shopkeeper. The link provided said he was a rice-cake seller but in some versions he was selling Niu she bing (牛舌餅/牛舌饼), a buttery pastry shaped like an ox tongue. Regardless of the commercial goods being sold, the strange woman bought a rice-cake/pastry for her baby every night. As you can guess, the money that the seller received either mysteriously disappeared or turned into leaves or hell money (the paper ones usually burned for the departed in Chinese customs) by morning. In the end, the townspeople traced a baby's cries to a burial site and dug out a healthy baby boy, still alive and gumming away at the pastry, and the departed mother looking as if she were only sound asleep.

According to this research title about traditional Japanese belief in the supernatural,

when a person was especially gifted (in this case with great vigor and running ability), or was born with an exceptional mark like white hair, a rumor might circulate that he had been "born in the grave of his mother."

Going back to Yuuji and his mother, it's not totally clear whether he was born before or after the Kenjaku scarring ala possession which would determine his origins. But given Choso's unreal memories precedent and Yuuji's superhuman abilities, it's likely Gege took inspiration from the yurei story and Yuuji's mother didn't survive the childbirth or was pregnant only after Kenjaku took over.

So the conclusion is, we still can't determine whether Kenjaku, the one and only Getwo brainy, is a milf or not until Gege says so and assuming there's no mpreg involved (starts ducking the incoming rotten-tomato missiles).

hey there!! hoping to get your input on this: ive seen plenty of fics where characters across the cql board will say just very openly "i love you." i don't know if this is a common way of expressing romantic love in ancient china? i could be wrong, but the FEELING i get is that it's more common to use gestures, or allude metaphorically to some poem/story instead of being so direct? i think theres an old-fashioned jpn phrase like "i'll make soup for u every day" to confess, anything similar here?

oof, so I’m going to go ahead and start by saying that I don’t know nearly enough to be make generalized statements about how romantic love is expressed in ancient/dynastic China or even in modern-day, because I’m just not widely-read/steeped in the culture enough. And even if I were, I still don’t know if I could make definitive statements on what can be considered a “common way of expressing love” because there are as many ways to express love as there are people and permutations of relationships on this planet. 

The renditions of love that tend to linger in our minds, however, tend to be defined by action: 梁山伯与祝英台 Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, the butterfly lovers inseparable by death; 牛郎织女 Niu Lang and Zhi Nv, a mortal man and celestial maiden, crossing to each other over a bridge over the Milky Way made of magpies; 孟姜女 Meng Qiangnv breaking open the Great Wall with the force of her tears. Just gonna... put that out there.

I did include a brief discussion of the character 爱 ai in this post, which is the character that’s pretty much translates to ‘love’ (and many of its complicated English valences) in modern Mandarin. Given an earlier reading of 爱 not as ‘love,’ but as ‘begrudging, cherishing’ makes the possibility of saying 我爱你 woaini rather...unlikely in ancient China (especially when you consider that 我 wo and 你 ni were different pronouns back then, too... what I’m trying to say is that a simple ctext search hasn’t been helping me here).

I am, however, willing to bet that writing/reciting poetry for your lover was a Thing, and it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t seize every possible opportunity to add gratuitous poetry to a post:

《上邪》/ Shangye

上邪！/ High Heaven!

我欲与君相知，/ I want for us both to know each other

长命无绝衰。/ as long as life, with no decline or end

山无陵，江水为竭，/ When mountains lose their peaks, when river waters dry up,

冬雷震震，夏雨雪 ，/ when thunder rumbles in winter; when rain and snow fall in summer

天地合，乃敢与君绝！/ when sky and earth seal back together, only then will I dare end things with you!

One of the shortest pieces in the Hanyuefu, which I mentioned briefly in this post, 《上邪》 is an incredibly powerful declaration of love, loyalty, and devotion without using any of the above words (it does, however, use 知 zhi / knowing). 

Oh! Both 《上邪》and《卜算子》use 君 jun, which you might recognize from ‘Hanguang-jun’ or ‘Zewu-jun.’ In addition to being an honorific, 君 also appears often in poetry as a respectful second-person pronoun. Again, it’s technically gender-neutral, though most of the time it’s assumed to refer to a man.

《卜算子》李之仪， Busuanzi by Li Zhiyi (Northern Song Dynasty)

我住长江头，君住长江尾。/ I live at the head of the Yangtze; you live at the tail of the Yangtze,

日日思君不见君，共饮长江水。/ Day after day, I think of you but do not see you; we drink from the same river’s waters

此水几时休，此恨何时已。/ When will these waters rest? When will these feelings stop?

只愿君心似我心，定不负相思意。/ I only hope that your heart is similar to mine; I would not let down the intent of our mutual love.*

*note: this entire last line is rough, but I spent more time than I’d like banging my head against 相思, which I translated as ‘mutual love.’ It’s glossed in Pleco as ‘pining, lovesickness’ but literally means ‘mutual thought.’ 

The language of thought, of mutual thought, of the sentiment behind the phrase thinking of you, is something that goes way, way back. It’s in 《饮马长城窟行》, from the poetry post I linked earlier; it’s also referenced in the last line of 《楚辞·山鬼》Mountain Ghost from the Songs of the South: 思公子兮徒离忧 / only in thinking of you can I depart from sorrows.

Oh! Here’s a classic declaration of love -- literally, from the 《诗经》 Shijing / Classic of Poetry:

执子之手，与子偕老 / I’ll hold your hand, and with you grow old...

It’s the most famous line from 《国风·邶风·击鼓》which I think is actually a... war poem? So a poem that’s primarily all about that Mutual Loyalty and Manly Camaraderie, but one that has had its most iconic line co-opted for the sheer romance of it all.

I’m not going to translate《击鼓》 fully because trying to read the 《诗经》is one of my personal nightmares, but you can find it here on ctext with the James Legge translation, which, admittedly, takes some liberties with the text.

One last poem, because the last line is peak pining:

《越人歌》 Yuerenge

今夕何夕兮 搴洲中流，/ What evening is this evening? Drifting in the river current.*

今日何日兮 得与王子同舟。/ What day is today? That I can travel in the same boat as you, prince

蒙羞被好兮 不訾诟耻，/ I hide my shyness, cover my fondness; there will be no slander or gossip or shame*

心几烦而不绝兮 得知王子。/ My heart is troubled, unending -- to come to know you, prince

山有木兮木有枝，心说君兮君不知。/ On mountains, there are trees; on trees, there are branches -- my heart delights in you, and you do not know.

The story I’ve always been told about 《越人歌》 is that a prince of Chu, fleeing political strife in his state, crosses a river in a boat poled by a young woman of the state of Yue. She recognizes the fleeing prince and sings this song to him as she poles across the river. The catch is that she sings it in the language of the state of Yue, so he has absolutely no idea that she’s confessing her admiration and love for him.

This story, according to my Google searches, is inaccurate, but OH WELL, the last line is still peak pining regardless.

stats wise she’s basically a powercrept NYcamilla with a personal weapon. she outclasses her in every stat besides res and thanks to barrier blade being a thing even that is a non-factor. add to that the fact that she’s a permanent addition to the main pool and she officially outclasses her. laegjarn’s weapon adds 50% of the bonuses on the target to herself, so if she’s up against a target with full emblem buffs she’ll get +3 atk/spd/def/res for herself as an in-combat boost. this is pretty useful, but its nothing crazy so i’ll include some better weapon options. of course she works best on flier emblem, but she can work just fine without those buffs. onto her builds;

her first setup is your typical dual phase bulky flier build any flier with decent def, HP, and spd can run this setup and laegjarn is no exception. you’ll want brazen atk/def and vantage since they combo well. close defense is her optimal seal, but atk/def 2 or def +3 will work in a pinch.

speaking of alternate weapon options, with barrier blade + DC she can easily become the total package in terms of dual phasing by having 42 def and 40 res along with a very nice 45 speed. (with -HP +SPD) neutral would also work pretty well since she really likes having all of her stats as a true dual phase unit. you can easily run iceberg/bonfire/ignis/glacies + vantage here, but her speed and defenses lean her towards guard very nicely, so i’d recommend that instead.

for her non-emblem setups, a slaying edge(spd) + fury is a great setup, again with vantage. atk/def 2 is her ideal seal slot if she’s not using close defense. distant guard is pretty useful as well if your team can use it. if not then go with something like even def wave.

if you prefer the positive end of the HP spectrum and just want a bulky flier, then going with steady stance or close defense are great options.  safeguard is also a better option for her weapon since she doesn’t miss out on too much by opting out of niu. with close defense stacking you’ll want ignis as her special for more explosive damage. since you’re on the positive end of the HP spectrum you can opt for guard as well. especially since she has the speed for it.

Overview

Laegjarn is a flying sword unit with 32 atk, 36 spd, 36 def, and 17 res. Her weapon, Niu, gives her spd+3 and she takes half of the total bonuses on foe and adds them to her own stats. So any team that lives off of emblem buffs is actually buffing Laegjarn as well. Any unit that runs a Wave skill gives her 3 of the 6 points. Unfortunately, outside of Arena, this might be a pretty situational weapon passive.

She’s definitely a good option for a flier emblem team! And if you get her and don’t want her, she has Chill Atk fodder.

- Low low res makes her super vulnerable to mages

- Pretty much made for arena so if you aren’t big into arena, you’ll need to put some work into her.

Similar Units

New Years Camilla has to step aside for Laegjarn, as she beats Camilla in pretty much every way. Camilla has lower spd by one point (35), lower def by 5 (31) and only one point higher in atk (33). Her res is better, but not by much at 23, and her weapon is all but useless for offense. Laegjarn then is the better option unless you already have a built up NY Camilla and don’t want to waste the time on building Laegjarn.

+atk for 35 atk, +spd for 39 spd, +def for 39 def. It depends on what you want to focus on. The top preference would be +atk though.

HP is best kept neutral to preserve her physical bulk.

-Res is her best drop because it’s so bad anyway. If you hate superBANES and don’t want to use her A passive for arena, you’ll probably want to drop HP instead.

If you really want a GREAT Laegjarn, sacrifice Distant Counter to her and run her with Iote’s Shield. She’ll still be relatively weak to mages but if you have someone else to deal with those for her, she can tank pretty much any physical threat.

If you don’t go with DC, you can use Close Counter instead in her seal.
