Despite declining sales, the 2020 Toyota Yaris presses on, essentially a rebadged version of the Mazda2 that’s not sold here. In a segment that breeds low expectations, the Yaris left us pleasantly surprised after a week.

With average new-vehicle transaction prices topping $36,000, it’s refreshing to know you can still get a well-equipped car for under $20,000. The 2020 Toyota Yaris LE hatchback is priced from $18,705, but our upgraded XLE rang out to $19,705. For that price, you get an attractive interior with plush leatherette seats, soft touch surfaces, and blue stitching on the dashboard. The layout will look very familiar if you’ve been inside a new Mazda, particularly the 7.0-inch screen enabled with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When the Yaris is stationary, the screen responds to touch, but when moving, you have to use a pesky control knob positioned to the right that is uncomfortably far back from the driver’s seat. The infotainment interface aside, the Yaris’ inviting, uncluttered, and reasonably spacious interior belies its price tag.

The value proposition only increases when you consider the car’s fuel efficiency. The EPA rates the Yaris at 32/40/35 mpg city/highway/combined, strong numbers no doubt. But when we conducted our own real-world tests, we were really impressed with the Yaris’ 33.2/48.9/38.8 mpg score.

Under the hood, the Yaris features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. That’s not a lot of power, even for a 2,400-pound car like this one. The Yaris took 9.4 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph, not an unreasonable amount of time compared to other subcompacts. A 2020 Nissan Versa with more horsepower did the run in 9.7 seconds, but a manual-equipped 2018 Honda Fit was particularly quick, zipping to 60 in 8.4 seconds.

Although it takes a while to reach highway speeds, the Yaris feels zippy enough once you’re going. Road test editor Chris Walton praised the smooth upshifts from the six-speed automatic and said the car is quicker than he imagined. “I appreciate a ‘real’ automatic with honest gears where many others use a CVT in this class,” he noted. “Sport mode is also very good in heavy traffic, holding gears to slow the car instead of using the brakes.”

The Yaris recorded similar numbers to rivals in braking and handling tests. In the 60–0 test, the Yaris took a respectable 124 feet to reach a complete stop. That said, our test team noted a lack of initial bite when you press down the brake pedal, as well as directional stability issues. In the figure eight, the Yaris came within a few tenths of a second of the Versa, Fit, and other competitors, lapping the course in 28.1 seconds at an average 0.58 g.

Testing director Kim Reynolds called the Yaris’ figure-eight performance “pretty easy and 100 percent predictable,” with strong understeer and modest power. He was able to complete the lap in second gear the whole time, briefly reaching the rev limiter.

There’s no getting around one of the Yaris’ biggest drawbacks: its ride quality. The Yaris feels jittery even over smooth pavement, like you can feel every nook and cranny on the road. Over dips, I found myself jumping up in my seat, which is only amusing the first few times. Another issue is the N in NVH. When driving on the highway, considerable road noise enters the cabin.

One of the first things people want to know about subcompact cars is their safety. Fortunately, the Yaris does pretty well in government tests. It received a five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This breaks down to five stars in front crashes and side crashes, and four stars in the rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not issued crash scores for the 2020 Yaris hatch, but it did rate the headlights “poor.” The 2020 Yaris sedan has been rated, scoring “Good” in front, side, and roof strength tests, as well as head restraints and seats. Unlike most new Toyota vehicles, the Yaris doesn’t come with the full suite of Safety Sense technologies (because, again, it is a Mazda beneath the sheetmetal). But it does have a low-speed pre-collision system, which provides automatic braking assistance if it detects a potential front collision.

As an entry-level vehicle, the Yaris requires some compromise, particularly when it comes to ride comfort. That said, the Yaris makes a compelling case for itself with a high-quality interior and excellent fuel economy.

At one point in time, the Nissan Versa was the least expensive car you could buy in America. Well, that’s no longer the case. Indeed, as it starts a 3rd generation, its apparent mission is to bring a whole new level of refinement, technology, and excitement to the economy car class. Now if it succeeds, that could make it an even bigger bargain than before.

While for the most part, Nissan has not been able to match Honda or Toyota when it comes to compact and midsize 4-doors; their Versa subcompact sedan has been a leader in its segment for some time. And an all-new version for 2020, aims to keep that in place.

Always a little bulbous and chunky-looking; this 3rd generation Versa loses the jellybean curves. In their place, are sharper lines and exaggerated fenders that give it a slimmed-down look, despite hitting the new-gen trifecta of being longer, lower, and wider.

Yes, they insisted on applying Nissan’s recent hallmarks of a V-motion grille and floating roof. The front end looks good; the floating roof however, appears a little forced.

They made a point of filling up the wheel wells, whether you get the standard 15-inch steelies, or these optional 17s. That alone has gone a long way towards giving Versa a much more modern look.

It’s no secret that previous Versa’s have put a higher priority on price point than driving enjoyment; and while we’re not talking sport sedan here, response has vastly improved.

Though the Versa remains the smallest car in their lineup here, it’s statistically a compact, and inside it even feels more like a midsize; reaffirming yet again to us, why midsize family cars are in a slump. Yes, people are defecting to SUVs there’s no denying that, but they’re also finding the amount of space and even comfort features they’re used to in smaller cars.

It doesn’t exactly feel all grown up in here, but certainly less entry-level than before. Materials are much nicer and the copious amount of real controls feel more substantial to the touch. Plus, just about everything is where you expect it to be.

Front seat passengers do get more space than before, but rear seat passengers actually loose a little, which is a shame as that was a real highlight of previous Versa’s. Cargo space remains quite good, 15.0-cubic-ft. in the trunk.

The standard naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter I4 that powers the Versa is not new. But it has been updated for 2020; cranking out 13-more horsepower and 7 more lb-ft. of torque than before, for totals of 122-horsepower and 114 lb-ft.

Here in our test car, it’s connected to a CVT, but a 5-speed manual is still available if you stick with base trim.

The CVT has received some updates as well. We actually can’t say we’re in love with it, but its quicker response and increased smoothness are certainly appreciated.

Despite the additional horsepower, our Versa SR-trimmed test car was actually slower to 60 than last gen, taking a lengthy 11.3-seconds to get the job done. But it was noticeably smoother. There are simulated shifts in the CVT which don’t really accomplish anything other than impeding your momentum, and perhaps giving you the sound of a traditional automatic. Best 1/4-mile time was 18.6-seconds at 75 miles-per-hour.

The base S trim manual starts at just $15,625, mid-level SV at $18,535; top SR at $19,135; and in case you’re wondering, no more Note hatchback for now.

In some circles, “very nice” may not sound like high praise. But the 2020 Nissan Versa is indeed very nice whether you’re comparing it to subcompacts, compacts, or even midsize sedans. It may not be the cheapest car you can buy anymore; but it’s a more than competent commuter, and for us, a far greater value than ever before.

The car has been lowered, widened, and lengthened, which makes it look sleeker (think baby Altima) at the expense of rear-seat room. The trunk, however, is huge. Nissan is banking on the apparent trend of millennials away from what their parents drove, meaning SUVs, toward sedans.

The changes make the 2020 Versa a reasonable contender. It’s no longer just a car shopped on price against subcompacts from Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. Only the Versa sedan continues for 2020; the hatchback Versa Note goes away. If you want a Versa hatchback / SUV, it’s called the Nissan Kicks and is about $2,500 more, comparably equipped.

On the Road With the Nissan Versa

I spent a week with the Versa recently: a day in crowded Manhattan, a weekend tailgating and foliage-watching in New York State’s Finger Lakes, and several days driving suburban New York-New Jersey. The Versa is easy to park in the big city and would be better still if it had Nissan’s highly regarded Around View system of exterior cameras with a 360-degree birds-eye view. (Maybe in a year, Nissan hints.) The car is most at home on local roads. But once you get it up to highway speed, it’s a fairly quiet ride with great seats that Nissan dubs Zero Gravity. As with any small car, the short wheelbase (103 inches on a 175-inch car) means highway expansion strips are more noticeable. The driver assists (below) make highway driving a bit more effortless.

The 1.6-liter front-drive engine and continuously variable transmission are willing but engineered to return high mpg over tire-smoking performance. I clicked off 0-60 mph times of 9-10 seconds. Stomp the throttle hard and there was a bit of turbo-lag sensation — a second or two of hesitant progress while the engine room spooled up to full power — in a car that has no turbocharger. But 18-wheelers that take 25 to 100 seconds to reach 60 mph get onto highways safely every day.

Nissan rates the “Xtronic” Versa CVT at 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, 35 mpg combined. Driving 300 miles of interstate and 50 miles of 55 mph rural highway, I came out very close to that 40 mpg. When I ran 10- to 20-mile legs on more-or-less flat interstate road at 60-65 mph, I got closer to 45 mpg. This is a new 1.6-liter, 16-valve engine with 122 hp (12 percent more than the old Versa) and 114 pound-feet of torque (a 7 percent increase) that doesn’t peak until 4,000 rpm, which may account for the initial slow liftoff.

Those grandly named Zero Gravity seats are comfortable. They’d be a little better with adjustable lumbar support. The driver’s left leg is pushed back a bit by the wheel arch and you notice it on longer runs.

A 7-inch LCD in the instrument panel provides infotainment, phone, trip and safety alerts. Here, it shows the car is on or near the right lane marking. The triangle adjacent lights up when there’s a car in your blind spot and you flick the turn signal.

Nissan Versa Trim Lines

The 2020 Nissan Versa has one engine, one transmission (two on the cheapest model), one body style (sedan; no hatchback), and three trim lines, or model variants. All models are front-drive only, no sunroof. Normally the cheapest trim line accounts for a small fraction of sales. Here, the top seller is the base trim, says Jordan Savage, a senior planner for Nissan. Pay attention to what you do and don’t get on the base trim line, especially if you’re buying for a newer or younger driver who would benefit from the safety assists while they’re building skills and — sadly — convinced they can text and nothing will happen.

Nissan Versa S, $17,295 including $895 shipping. Every Versa including the S gets a 7-inch center console touchscreen LCD, three USB ports, four audio speakers, Bluetooth audio, push-button start, and hill start assist. The S has 15-inch steel wheels and 185/65R15 all-season tires. There is Siri Eyes Free and Google Assistant Voice Recognition.

With the Versa S entry model (only), there’s an even less expensive five-speed manual transmission version available for just $14,730 — “look, a Versa under $15,000″— plus $895 shipping, or $15,625 – $1,670 less than the CVT equivalent model. But fuel economy is less: 27/35/30.

With either transmission, Versa S safety features include pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, and auto high beams. Lane departure warning warns but does not pull the car back if you cross a lane marker, nor does it self-center.

2018 Nissan Kicks SR Long-Term Arrival: The Value-Packed Style

Cheap and affordable vehicles used to mean owning a car that looks like a bar of soap and offers a driving experience best described as soulless. Now, small and/or inexpensive vehicles are far from basic transportation, and the 2018 Nissan Kicks is a great example. Packed with the latest tech and cool exterior colors to help it stand out, the Kicks aims to lure young consumers with a strong value proposition, plenty of standard features, and great fuel economy.

When we configured our long-term Nissan Kicks, opting for the range-topping SR trim was a no-brainer. From a pricing standpoint, it was only $600 more than the midgrade SV, and it came with more standard features, including Nissan’s Around View Monitor, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, 17-inch alloy wheels, and LED low-beam headlights. The SR grade is also the only way you can get the awesome eight-speaker Bose Personal Plus audio system, which is part of the $1,000 SR Premium package; it’s a feature we are eager to spend plenty of time with. All told, our tester checks in at $23,000.

Like the Versa Note, the Kicks is highly customizable via Nissan’s Color Studio, which allows you to add contrasting side mirror covers, colorful interior trim, wheel inserts, and floormats with colored piping to spice up your ride. One the safety front, automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning are standard on all models, but blind-spot morning and rear cross-traffic alert are only available on the SV and SR grades. Standard features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen, three USB ports, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera.

The 2018 Nissan Kicks rides on the V platform, also used on the Versa, Versa Note, and Sentra. Its suspension features MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam out back. Unfortunately, this platform can’t support all-wheel drive, so Nissan’s smallest crossover is front-drive only. The SR grade is also the only model to come with the Integrated Dynamic-Control Module powertrain software, which adds Nissan’s Active Engine Brake, Active Trace Control, and Active Ride Control to improve the Kicks’ road manners.

Powered by a 1.6-liter I-4 with 125 hp and 115 lb-ft of torque paired to a CVT, the 2018 Nissan Kicks is far from a powerhouse. The engine is shared with the Versa and Versa Note but tuned for more power in the Kicks. With an EPA fuel economy rating 31/36 mpg city/highway, the Kicks’ efficiency is among the best in its segment. The test team will also put the Kicks through MotorTrend’s rigorous testing regime to see where its performance stands in its class. Women not only buy more cars now, they also continue to influence what men buy. More importantly, women may be more thorough. With the growth of online vehicle-shopping sites, researchers have been able to mine more data about men's and women's shopping behavior.

Women research way more than Men

Online vehicle valuation and shopping site Kelley Blue Book (KBB) surveyed its readers, then, with their gender known, tracked which pages each viewed and for how long.

Women not only spent more time researching car purchases online, an average of 75 days compared to 63 days for men, they also spent nearly three times longer per visit on hard research, 10.4 minutes compared with 3.8 minutes for the men. That's pretty significant, It also begs the question: Why is that?

Women spent 56 percent more time pricing vehicles, 53 percent more time reading ratings and reviews, 45 percent more time doing side-by-side vehicle comparisons, and 18 percent more time building consideration sets.

Both genders spent the same amount of time on the site. But men spent more time reading general automotive articles and looking at photos of cars and trucks they weren't considering buying.

Women stick to their price

Women weigh the long-term costs

The little Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris, which the EPA says gets 41 mpg on the highway, is all-around one of the most economical cars to own. It's no coincidence that eight out of ten owners are women.

When Road & Travel Magazine compiled a list of vehicles with the highest percentage of female primary drivers, it found it ripe with "some of the smallest, least expensive cars available," such as the Honda Fit, the Kia Spectra and the Toyota Yaris

Furthermore, three of the cars most popular with women were among the top five cars ranked as the least expensive to own: the fifth-ranked Nissan Versa (60.58 percent female owned), the fourth-ranked Toyota Yaris (61.86 percent) and the top-ranked Honda Fit (80.46 percent).

Even among wealthy buyers, women favored affordability, opting for some of the least-expensive luxury models. "By contrast," Road & Driver reported, "the luxury vehicles with the highest percentage of male drivers are among the priciest, fastest and flashiest around."

Women over-prepare to compensate

Researchers believe there's at least one reason women do more research before buying a car: They think they need to.

The survey also noted that 72 percent of men said they felt confident in the "ins and outs of buying a vehicle," whereas only 38 percent of women did. Similarly, 72 percent of men said they felt confident negotiating with a car dealer, while 38 percent of women did.

The survey also found that "confidence" ranks fourth among sentiments women experience when buying a car, right behind "apprehension" and "nervousness."

Women shop dealers
