What kind of aesthetic do you think the characters go for? Like what aesthetic would they be attracted to in a partner, purely based on vibes. You can answer this sinply as an ask, or create hcs out of it, completely up to you :-)

Someone who wasn't afraid to express themselves in with vibrant colors, even if it makes you the center of attention. The most important thing is that you can wear clothes and accessories that express your personality and lifestyle!

Many of your dates would be something simpler, like a picnic or a day watching movies at home, but these are the moments when you create the sweetest memories. <3

— A/N: I'm sorry if that wasn't exactly what you wanted, this "aesthetics" thing I don't really understand because it's a very vague concept, so I tried my best to write something that could include everyone who is reading!!
Besides, this is my first time writing in this type of style, so I'm sorry again if it's not good💔 And if a character you like isn't here, you're free to imagine which one of these he would fit into!

in my dreams ☆ nishinoya yuu x reader
Tumblr media
synopsis: in a world where soulmates exist, you’re not entirely sure what you’re destined for…until your dreams become reality. details: fluff | soulmates au | song fic | strangers to lovers | ~1.8k words | gn! reader | timeskip! nishinoya | my entry for @phantasmaebg warnings: this is my first time doing a soulmates thing and i’ve had a bit of a writing slump recently, so please bear with me!
Tumblr media
Soulmates have long been a point of contention in your world.
Every pair is destined to share a unique “power.” Some people can share emotions or senses, read each others’ minds, have similar words written somewhere on their bodies, and whatever else you can imagine.
The only definitive confirmation is what most call a zing—a short-lived, electrifying feeling when partners hold hands for the first time.
In theory, the idea of having a “forever partner” was lovely. Your parents are a prime example of the lifelong bond most people dream of having.
On the flip side? Some relationships have crashed and burned, despite being confirmed matches. Others have thrown out the idea entirely, choosing their hearts over fate.
Where do you fit in all of this? You don’t know. You’ve spent most of your life being pulled in both directions.
Your family is hopeful—eager, even—that you’ll continue their successful story. It’s pressuring, to say the least, not to mention terrifying.
What if your destined partner doesn’t believe in soulmates?
What if the person you grow to love is hell-bent on looking for their soulmate?
What if you never meet your soulmate in your whole lifetime?
What if…
You don’t even want to think about it; nothing is certain and that exhausts you.
The only comfort you have is your dreams, where you feel free to exist.
Ever since you were a child, you never understood how people could forget their dreams. Yours were incredibly vivid; the images lingered long enough for you to draw them in detail.
You easily recalled the way sunlight dances on crystal-clear waters, the soft whisper of wind through leaves, the fineness of the sand beneath your feet, the kaleidoscope of colors in the night sky, and how grand architectural feats towered over you.
You longed to see all of it with your own eyes.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple. Traveling was a luxury for your family, and they weren’t the adventurous type either. The only thing you could do was create a bucket list of places you hoped to visit as an adult.
While most people desire to traverse the globe, there was something about yours that felt…different. You’ve dreamed of places and people that you’ve never seen before.
At first, you assumed they must have come from random glimpses of magazines lying around the house, or pictures your teachers had shown in class.
Then things got even weirder.
At some point in high school, new locations started appearing in your dreams. Gyms, volleyball courts, and stadiums. The exact same ones, over and over again.
A particularly beautiful girl started appearing more too. Slowly, more people joined her—at least thirteen more, if your count was accurate. You didn’t recognize any of them, but their unique voices stayed with you.
While they were mostly pleasant dreams, it was still unsettling. You ended up asking your parents about it, but they quickly leaped to conclusions. "It’s probably connected to your soulmate!" they said, excitement lighting their faces.
It wasn’t exactly the reaction you expected, but thankfully, it pushed them to be more supportive of your dreams to travel.
Eventually, the volleyball dreams faded, just as you started pursuing a degree in journalism. At last, you were carving a path to the life you’d always wanted—one where your curiosity could take you beyond the limits of your hometown.
You were one step closer to finally exploring the world.
Tumblr media
A few years after graduating, you’ve been lucky enough to land a job with a well-known travel magazine.
Apparently, you had an exceptional portfolio; your words alone were capable of painting the clearest pictures in the readers’ minds. It felt surreal to hear this praise, but more than that, it felt right.
You felt like you were finally where you belonged.
Though you don’t get to choose the destinations for your assignments, it hardly matters. You’ve fallen in love with each place you’ve visited.
Whether exploring the whitewashed buildings of Santorini, cycling through the charming canals of Amsterdam, or basking in the turquoise waters of Boracay, every experience has broadened your horizons.
Best of all, the company covers most of your travel expenses, so how could you complain?
Yet, one dream continues to elude you—the lantern festival.
For years, you’ve been enamored by its magic, picturing the moment hundreds of glowing lanterns fill the night sky.
It’s been at the top of your bucket list since childhood. You’ve researched every detail: the best time to visit, the most stunning viewpoints, even the perfect wish to write on delicate paper. You’ve imagined the feeling of releasing your lantern so many times that it’s become second nature to dream about it, over and over.
Perhaps that’s why, as much as you’ve traveled, there’s a lingering ache in your chest. A small part of you feels incomplete, as if something is waiting for you there.
And then, one night, something in your dreams begins to shift.
You find yourself in the familiar scene of the festival, surrounded by the warm glow of lanterns. As always, you write your wish on the translucent paper: achieve my dreams and live a fulfilling life with no regrets.
But this time, something is different.
Beside your neatly written wish, there’s something new. Foreign characters—delicate strokes of Japanese script—appear as if they were always meant to be there. The ink feels familiar, though you don’t recall writing it.
Confused but curious, you prepare to lift the lantern. That’s when you notice you’re not alone.
Someone is with you. Their presence is so natural that it doesn’t feel strange, even though you can’t see their face. Together, you hold the lantern between you, your hands brushing as you gently release it into the air. The glow reflects in their silhouette, and for a moment, everything feels perfect.
When you wake, the dream lingers. The feeling of their hand against yours stays etched in your mind, warm and tangible in a way none of your dreams have ever been.
You can’t shake the feeling that these fragments are leading you somewhere, like pieces of a puzzle waiting to fall into place.
Tumblr media
You really hate delayed flights; you wouldn’t be running and panting now if things had gone as planned.
To be fair, the situation wasn’t anyone’s fault. A coworker unexpectedly fell sick, so you were asked to fill in and cover the annual Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Thailand at the last minute.
Despite the frantic circumstances, you suppose it was a blessing in disguise.
Lungs burning, you finally arrive at the festival venue. The paper lanterns have already started to float into the night sky like glowing stars. You hope you’re not too late.
At the registration booth, you show the ticket your coworker had purchased in advance, only to encounter a new problem.
“We are very sorry, but there has been a shortage of lanterns,” the stationed employee explains. “There were a lot of walk-ins this evening. Would you be willing to wait? We are still looking for available vendors.”
You hum to yourself, thinking about what to do. Though it would have been nice, you suppose you didn’t need to release a lantern to write the article.
“Okay-”
“Share?”
The sudden voice beside you makes you jolt.
Turning, you see a man with a bright, toothy grin. He points to his lantern, which looks a little big for him. It’s kind of adorable, now that you think about it.
“Me?” You point to yourself. “You want to share your lantern with me?”
“Yeah. So you happy. Uh, sorry, my English is not that good,” he says sheepishly.
You wave your hand dismissively. “It’s okay. Don’t worry, I understand you.”
“Great. Let’s go!” He gestures toward the crowd.
You bow to the event employee and thank him before following the stranger to a quieter spot.
“This is okay?” He looks back at you.
“Yup,” you reply. “Thank you so much.”
“Welcome. Here, write the wish.” He hands you a black marker.
Taking it, you select a blank area and write your wish down without a second thought. You’ve done this a hundred times in your dreams.
As you return the marker, you catch a glimpse of his wish. They’re written in Japanese script—the same characters you’ve seen in your dreams.
Wait.
Wait.
Your heart skips a beat as the realization hits.
The man notices your sudden silence and looks at your wish. He freezes, his expression unreadable.
“Uh,” you look at all the people around you, hoping to break the silence. “So, let’s get our lantern flying?”
“Yeah!” He positions himself at one end of the lantern. “Ready?”
Grabbing the other end, you nod.
“Three, two, one, up!”
Together, you release the lantern. It floats gently into the sky, joining the sea of glowing lights.
It’s breathtaking—something you’ll never forget.
“Thank you, uh, what’s your name?”
“My name?” He points to himself. “Nishinoya Yuu. Nickname is Noya.”
“Noya?”
He enthusiastically gives you a thumbs-up. “Yes, Noya! And you are?”
You share your name, and he repeats it. You don’t know why, but you love the way it sounds on his tongue. He seems happy to have gotten your name right on the first try too.
“I feel like I just got déjà vu,” you comment, gazing at the sky.
“Decha what?”
“Déjà vu,” you explain. “Uh, it feels like I saw this happen before. In a dream.”
At your admission, something shifts in the atmosphere.
“Dream?” He furrows his eyebrows. “Dream, like sleeping?”
You nod at him, gesturing to everything going on around you. “I dreamed of this many times.”
Noya’s gaze remains fixed on you as he responds. “Me too. I dream of this. Many times.”
You glance at his bag, noticing a volleyball hanging from it. You’re immediately reminded of your high school dreams.
Were your parents right all along?
Could it be?
“How about last night?” Your voice lowers. “Did you dream of fireworks?”
He gasps, eyes widening. “Yes. Beach fireworks.”
It can’t be a coincidence anymore.
“It’s you.” You can’t wipe the grin off of your face. “You’re the one.”
“The one?” Noya tilts his head.
You pause, wondering how he’ll react to your suggestion. “Soulmate?”
For a moment, he stares at you, and you wonder if you’ve gone too far. You hope he doesn’t think you’re crazy.
However, before you can take your words back, he steps forward and takes both your hands in his.
Almost immediately, something surges through your body, like some sort of warm, vitalizing energy.
The zing.
You can’t tear your eyes away from each other, and you can see the same astonishment reflected in his.
“Soulmate,” Noya whispers. “Dream soulmate.”
And for once in your life, things start to make sense.
“Yeah, it’s you. You’re the one in my dreams.”

Nishinoya x tallfem!reader
Contains: shyfem!reader, fab reader, tall reader, golden retriever energy noya, Y/N, some mistakes, and idk?
The gym buzzed with anticipation after Karasuno's hard-fought victory. Noya, couldn’t wait to introduce Y/N to his teammates. They had been dating for a while, and he was proud to show her off.
Y/N stood by the bleachers, her smile shy but genuine. She was a few inches taller than Nishinoya, her presence both graceful and captivating. As the team gathered, Noya’s excitement bubbled over.
“Guys,” he announced, wrapping an arm around Y/N’s waist, “meet Y/N. She’s my amazing-cute girlfriend!”
Tanaka wolf-whistled, and Hinata’s eyes widened. “Noya, she’s taller than you!” Tanaka teased.
Noya grinned. “Exactly! She’s my secret weapon. When we need a block, I’ll just lift her up!”
Y/N blushed out of embarrassment, but Noya didn’t hesitate. He scooped her into his arms effortlessly, the team's laughter filling the gym. The team stared, equal parts amused and impressed.
“See?” Noya said, holding Y/N high over his head. “Perfect height advantage!”
Sugawara chuckled. “Noya, you’re...uh something!”
As Y/N’s feet touched the ground, Noya leaned in. “Thanks for being with me..!” he whispered before giving her a gentle cheek kiss.
She blushed deeper, and Noya knew he’d found something special, someone who lifted him up in more ways than one. (HOPE YOU GUYS LIKED IT!!!)

TODDLER!HAIKYUU BOYS that will be possesive over their favorite daycare caregiver.
His favorite game was when you pretended to be a princess and he was the brave and charming knight that saved you.
For his 3 year old brain, you were the prettiest girl he'd ever seen, you always made sure his milk was warm and that he had his favorite stuffed animal whenever he took a nap.
Every time he saw you with another child on your arms, he felt the absolute betrayal. Why would you take care of another kid that wasn't him!?
"No!" he whined as he hold onto your leg while you had in your arms a sleeping little boy "y/n mine!" he puffed out his cheeks as he intensely pulled your shirt trying to catch your attention back to him.
You found him adorable, but every day it was more difficult to keep him from pushing the other kids that got close to you, and you were sure his mommy didn't like you because he seemed to like you more than her; and it was always a problem when she came to pick him up, because he never wanted to leave their place in your arms.

bear with me 🍎
🧸 ushijima x reader, some fluff basically, him being him, sharing headphones, not fully finished but yk yolo
You loved the route back home.
It’s a tricky one to find, hidden behind clusters of large trees and bushes, almost hidden away from the public eye. Honestly, you weren’t sure how you found it, but you just remember swatting at the scratchy branches and peering over the makeshift wooden bridge in front of you. The sun always leaks through the leaves, kaleidoscopic patterns of gold on your head, your shoulders, your bike as you trudge past. It’s a short path, not exactly a shortcut, but it’s quiet. Hidden away from the main highway by your school. Nice and tucked away.
Dirty, busted up converses dig into the soil as you balance on the bridge, hands clutching the handles of your bike. Slow and measured steps. The fall below isn’t bad, you think. Maybe five foot. Your eyes stayed glued on the wooden beams, inhaling sharply as you make your way to the end, the buzz of cicadas filling the silence.
You hated them. Their merlot red eyes, beady and vehement. You can’t count how many nightmares you’ve had imagining their webbed wings fluttering in your face, all up in your hair, making a home for themselves.
He was never scared though. Never.
“Are you close?”
You turn your head a bit, your cheek brushing against the windbreaker collar. “Yeah, yeah…”
An almost ghostly smile tugs at the corner of Ushijima’s lip, and he nods, expectantly, his own hands on his bike. You inhale. He knew you were scared. Hell, of course you were, every single damn time. But you didn’t want him knowing that.
You take another step, a groan under your weight. Eyes widen.
“You’re fine. It was my bike.”
“Ushi,” You warn weakly and swear the bark beneath you shivers the same when he chuckles, full and baritone. He takes a few steps closer, the whirr of his bike chain accenting the buzz.
“I don’t understand why you take this path if you’re scared.”
“I’m not scared.” You reply hastily, brows furrowed. Ushijima hums, oakmoss eyes narrowing a tad. “It’s just… Not stable..”
“We can always turn around.” He offered quietly, his own eyes studying the trees towering above you both. “What if you fall?”
Jeez, way to stress a girl out. “I won’t. I’ve been doing this for a while.”
Ushijima hums, but says nothing. You were adamant on showing him your secret path to and from school. He didn’t get it. Why didn’t you just take the normal path, like him and Tendou? What was wrong with biking down the road? It had to be safer than crossing a gnarly bridge.
Determinedly, you shove that ugly feeling of embarrassment down and push past, converse against oak, bike wheeling beside you. You make sure to note how the wood beneath you looks so similar to his eyes.
“Isn’t it pretty, though?” You muse as soon as you finally cross the bridge, onto a patch of grass near an opening of brambles. Ushijima wasn’t opposed to nature, although he didn’t particularly like the bees or butterflies, like Tendou or you did. Bristling, the man takes another calm step down the bridge, eyes drawing from the trees, the oak, the buzzing of cicadas.
“You risk your life everyday because it’s… pretty?”
You scoff playfully, your bright eyes on him, lips tugging into a smile. God. His heart races picks up a little, fingers flexing against the handlebars. Ushijima isn’t a man of cheap pleasures, but when your lips tug into a cathartic grin, he has no choice to slip.
“You’re so dramatic, Toshi. I’m not gonna die. It’s a five feet drop.”
“You are small. You could easily injure your ankle. Or fall into some poisonous nettles.” Ushijima grunts, giving the bridge a wary look but still continuing calmly to steer his bike over to you. You raise a brow.
“I’m a big girl, I think I can handle it.”
Ever so stubborn. A deep sigh leaves his lungs and he easily steps over the rock in the way, his bike effortlessly gliding to you. Your eyes meet his and you grin.
“So? What’dya think?”
It’s a path, hidden in the woods, away from everyone. Someone could chase you in here and nobody would know. A poorly crafted bridge. Cicadas swarming everywhere. It wasn’t even safe, not for someone like you, who could easily slip and fall. Ushijima rolls his jaw subtly, umber eyes on your expectant smile.
“It’s… nice.”
“What? Just nice? It’s so pretty! Look, they’ve even got a small lake down there!” You point below the bridge, a cool blue catching his eye.
“If you drank that, you could possibly catch som—“
“Why the hell would I drink— Okay, big guy, let’s head out.” Shaking your head with a smile, you hum and pull yourself out onto the pavement. Ushijima follows suit, and hides his frustration as best as he could. Why didn’t you just listen?
Your hands dig into your school blazer pocket and you fish out your jumbled up earphones and your small phone. Ushijima sighs.
“Wha happened to your phone case?”
You blink, pausing to lean the bike against the bus stop wall as you stick the headphone jack in. “Oh, it just got all yellow, I need a new one.”
“You’ll end up cracking it.”
You shake your head, smiling, tilting your phone in his face. “Nah, look! Not a single scratch.”
The man bristles and steers his bike beside yours, crossing his arms, neutral expression as he watches you scroll on your phone. You had so many apps, the brightly coloured widgets making his eyes hurt.
“Wanna listen?” As always, you offer him an earbud. He takes the small white bud and hums, putting in his ear. Before opening his mouth to complain about the ear-bleeding level of volume, your smile catches him off guard.
He loves watching you listen to music. Maybe because you’re so visceral about it, head bobbing up and down ever so slightly, wide eyed and smiling slightly as you listen to whatever K-POP lyrics filled both your ears. Mouthing the lyrics, nose scrunched up. So silly, out in front of everyone. And yet his heart thuds.
“I like this one… Though I’m not sure about the beat.. Here, you pick,” You ramble and thrust the phone in his direction and he grunts.
“You don’t like my music.”
A shrug. “So? I like you.”
His breath hitched. How did you just admit that so freely with a stupid grin? He shakes his head, dark hair falling into his eyes, the phone comically small in his grasp. He scrolls down your playlist.
“Do you think you’d ever win a fight against a bear? Like really?” Your genuine tone catches him off guard as his fingers tap on the Study playlist he made for you. Ushijima huffs, brows narrowing.
“Where did that come from?”
You shrug again, shuffling up onto your bike seat, leaning against it. Ushijima hopes you don’t fall off of it like last time so instinctively, his strong arm holds your bike firmly. “Just wondering, ya know? I feel like I could take one on.”
“Impossible. I suppose it depends on the bear.” He says begrudgingly, tucking your phone into his pocket, stepping in closer so the wires didn’t came apart. “But I doubt that will matter if it’s you.”
“The heck is that supposed to mean, Toshi?”
Ushijima sighs again, barely. “A bear hit could fracture you easily. They’re much larger and stronger than you are, you couldn’t simply outrun them.”
“If I had my bike?” You point out. Ushijima makes a mental note to not let you walk down that path on your own.
“No. They’re fast creatures. Up to 30 to 40 miles per hour.”
“How the hell do you know that?” You frown at your boyfriend. Ushijima doesn’t elaborate, simply explaining with narrowed brows.
“You would easily be mauled and killed, a human your size and with your stamina. Grizzly bears can overpower humans easily. So no, you couldn’t, not even with a weapon.
“That’s — I could shoot it in the face!” Outraged slightly, you gesture a gun. “Or maybe I can fight with it until it becomes tired.”
To your surprise, Ushijima flicks your forehead.
“No. There is no chance. Statistically speaking. Unless you know how to use a knife properly, which we know you can’t.”
Your shoulders falter at his words and you sigh, rolling your eyes and fishing out your phone out of his pocket with a small ‘sure buddy.’ Ushijima bristles, gaze flickering to your face. A beat of silence passes.
“Maybe a cub.”

“there is literally no logic in this!”
you have lots of energy left to educate noya about how math works.
“just remember it: differentiation of sin x is cos x, but the integration of sin x is negative cos x. simple!”
“oho, simple, my ass,” he rolls his eyes, ever the drama queen.
the volleyball team found out from daichi and suga that unless they all pass every one of their subjects (especially hinaga, kageyama, tanaka and noya), they couldn’t participate in the next match
desperately, noya begs you to help him out because he’s currently the trashiest at only one subject: math; which, believe it or not, is your strong suit
he’s delirious by the time you’re done with him on day 1, and refuses to continue studying it unless there’s something in it for him too (except the very necessary match he had to play in)
“how about… a kiss for every question you get right?”
and since then, he began understanding every formula and question, just to receive as many kisses as you could spare for him
tutoring sessions turn into study dates as the days merge together
dusk morphs into dawn when you study at his house sometimes, and he ends up falling asleep on the table
looking up to find him softly snoring, with his hair falling onto his closed eyes, you smile at him
he’d been working so hard the past month <3
you reach out to ruffle his hair slowly and pat his head lightly, making sure not to wake him from his peaceful state
“thanks… y/n,” he whispers, still asleep.
your heart melts, and you were glad he wasn’t awake; if he was, you knew he’d tease you about the massive redness creeping up your neck

He knew. Call it a libero's intuition, if you will.
The moment Nishinoya's cell phone rang, almost vibrating its way off his nightstand, he stopped what he was doing to answer. Only one person would call him this late, and today of all days too. But something told him it wasn't about the positive response you'd wanted.
Congratulating himself on another good save, he allowed himself a tentative smile along with his usual greeting.
For a couple of minutes, all he got in response was a sniffle. But he was patient. If volleyball had taught him anything, it was waiting for the right time to move.
"They rejected me," you finally voiced his suspicions.
A part of him couldn't help but be relieved. As mean as that was, he was afraid of missing his chance. When you first told him about your crush, he'd felt a tinge of pain in his chest. And his stomach twisted every time you gushed about them. It was eating at him. He should have been happy for you, but it hurt hearing you talk about someone else. It was worse than missing a crucial point in a match.
The other part of him was heartbroken on your behalf. He knew just how much of yourself you put into that confession. It was nothing short of pouring your heart out. He knew because he had listened to you practice, day in and day out, as you worked yourself up to confess. So hearing you so broken about getting rejected hurt and made him angry. This person he didn't even know didn't deserve your affection, much less your tears.
"I'll be right over." He wanted to say so much more, but that could wait until he could comfort you in person.
A heavy sigh of frustration left Nishinoya's body as he let his phone drop onto his lap. He had every intention of keeping his promise of coming over, but he had to compose himself first. What kind of impression would he give if he looked ready to beat someone up? Probably not a bad one cause it showed he had his friend's back, but there was more to it than that. And he wasn't ready to explain it all just yet.
But he was ready to get some late-night comfort food, however. All your favorite snacks and meals were at the top of his checklist, along with two pints of ice cream.
Two convenience store stops later, among other places, Nishinoya made his way toward your house. It wasn't a long walk, but after his 35-minute detour, he arrived at your home almost an hour after promised.
One knock. Two knocks. Three knocks it took for you to open the door. As expected, a puffy-eyed [ name ] appeared in the doorway. The sight of you almost sent him on a rant, but he stopped himself.
"Sorry for taking a while..." he searched for your eyes, "But I'm armed with snacks." The last bit came out as more of a question than a statement. He wasn't sure how enthusiastic he was allowed to sound, so he wanted to assess the situation first.
You didn't even look at the bag of goodies he brought before enveloping him in a hug.
"Yeah... sorry," he whispered, doing his best to return the hug.
Finally moving from the door, both of you ended up in your room. It was quiet for a while, but not in an awkward way. You were both just enjoying a pint of ice cream. The silence might have lasted longer if it weren't for Tanaka, who sent Nishinoya a meme.
'Damn Tanaka,' Nishinoya thought as he scrambled to silence his phone.
"They said they never gave me any reasons to get my hopes up. That... they could tell I liked them and went out of their way to make it obvious they weren't interested, but..." You drew a shaky breath. "I can't believe I didn't notice. I must have been so annoying."
"Did they seriously say that?" Nishinoya's blood was boiling.
You nodded, needing another moment to gather yourself. "I could even feel how annoyed they were." "What an ass. You'll probably think I'm saying all this because I'm your friend and would take your side in any situation, but he didn't deserve you. If that jerk could not see how amazing you are, that's on them. Not you. It just sucks you got your heart broken because of someone like that."
Nishinoya was glad to see you roll your eyes at him because it meant you were feeling slightly better.
"I don't know about being amazing and all that. If that were the case at least one person out there would like me, but there's no one." You shrugged.
"There is." The response slipped out on its own. "I'm sure there is," he quickly added.
"Doubt it."
"Why?"
"Because... well, because no one has ever said anything." You threw your arms up in defeat.
"What if they're afraid of telling you? Of getting rejected? You just found out how much it hurts."
"Yeah... you're right."
'Stupid. Stupid Noya.' He would shoot himself in the foot if he could.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to-" He was panicking over what to say to fix his mistake.
"No, it's okay. You're right. After what happened today, I don't picture myself confessing to anyone ever again. And if anyone does confess to me one day, I know I'll never be that mean."
Nishinoya chuckled. "Being let off easy still hurt, you know."
"Sure, but it can't be as bad as being outright rejected on top of being ridiculed for confessing." You crossed your arms and huffed, but he could tell it was more for show.
"Can't argue with that," he shrugged. "So, is it safe to assume you're less upset about getting rejected but more about how they went about it?"
You nodded with a soft smile.
"I hope you know that ass really didn't deserve you. Besides, you can do so much better!"
"Oh yeah," you chuckled. "I deserve someone who will cherish me and treat me right. Someone who will bring me pizza at midnight."
"Ha, I've done that." Catching himself once again, Nishinoya quickly added, "And it wasn't fun."
"What are you talking about? We stayed up all night watching movies and talking. I remember cause you forgot you had practice the next morning and were dying." You were now laughing.
"Exactly, not fun."
"Whatever."
The night went on like that, harmless banter back and forth with some movies and laughter sprinkled in between. The person who'd ruined part of your day was long forgotten by now.
"You should just stay over at this point. It's 4am, and you don't have practice tomorrow. So it's okay, right?" You were already pulling the blanket over the both of you as you spoke.
"Fine. Just don't kick me off the bed when you wake up in the morning cause you forgot you asked me to stay."
"I only did that once!" You laugh at the memory.
"Once was enough!"
"Okay, okay. I'll make it up to you if I do it again." You scooted a little closer to him and shut your eyes.
"How about you make it up for last time first?"
"With what?" You yawn.
'A date.'
He thought he had said it outloud when he heard the exact same words he was thinking, but you'd been the one to utter them. Maybe it'd been a figment of his imagination, he was tired after all. But he would soon find out they weren't. He would have to wait until morning though, cause you were out like a light.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
he knows the basic information about periods and pads. after the moment you had chatted with him he followed your request to buy a pad without any trouble. he walks to a nearby convenience store and grabs a pack of overnight pads. and as he was about to go the cashier, something had caught his eyes. the box of [flavor] tea, he eyed it and remembered that you had mentioned that you drink this kind of tea whenever you felt stressed or tired. he took the box and made his way to the cashier to pay, and he walked to your house. meanwhile, you were on your couch, sulking in pain caused by your period. you groaned as you squeezed your eyes and held your stomach just as another wave of painful cramp hit you. your ears caught the sound of knocking, you immediately recalled that you had told your boyfriend to buy you pads. you got up from the couch, having your back hunched over and your hand over your hurting stomach. the silver knob on the door opened, and daichi straightened his back and smiled, but that smile faltered a bit when he saw your pained expression. "darling?! are you okay?" he looked at you with concerned eyes as you let him in your house. "a-augh.. no.." you closed the door and immediately laid on the couch, sprawling your limbs all over the couch. he let out a half-suppressed laugh and sets down the plastic bag, and comes to you. "aww.. i'm sorry that you're feeling that way, i bought you the tea you like. do want me to brew you some?" he asked, smiling at you. "yes.. please." you grunted out. he then headed to your kitchen and brewed tea for you. after brewing the tea, he sat down beside you and handed out the tea. you thanked him and drank the [flavor] flavored tea, and the tea ended up making you feel better so you and daichi spent the rest of the day with each other <3
note : he's canonically an older brother and has younger sisters so he definitely has some experience! ( ty to that person who commented this on my old post )

if you were to describe this man, i'd be 'green flag', well technically it's two words, but you get the idea. he knows that menstruations come up every month, so he's always there to help you, and he also knows the basic stuff too. he just straightforwardly buys you a pack of large pads, and some snacks went to your house. as he entered your house, he gave you a peck on the cheek— causing you to blush and give him a kiss back, too. "hey, what about we watch a movie?? i bought some snackss!" he said while handing out the bag. earlier, he bought a pack of microwaveable popcorn, so he microwaved it up. after he was done, he set up the snacks on the table in front of your tv, and both of you did movie marathon while cuddling sweetly ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡—RYŪNOSUKE TANAKA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's DEFINETLY has researched what menstruations are. he knows almost everything about it and maybe even more than you. he has studied it scientifically, learning how and why it happens, and he makes sure to absorb everything he reads when he studies about it. and because he's so well educated about periods, so ever since you both got together, he has downloaded a 'period tracker app'. so he knows when he can help you get through your period with ease well, the best he can at least. and also whenever he gets a notification from the app, he always takes the opportunity to come and help you. some time later, after you texted each other, he arrived at your front door. he was carrying a backpack that seemed to be full of stuff. you eyeing the black bag until he spoke. "babyyyy! are you okay? are you getting cramps? i have something that could help you if you are!" he quickly said as he inspected at every corner of your body. "ryuu, I'm okayy!" you giggled from the ticklish feeling of his hands when he 'investigated' you. "ahh.. good." he sighed from relief upon hearing your sweet giggle. both of you then entered home, and he put dropped his bag on a table. you were surprised by the loud sound when tanaka placed down his bag. "uhhh ryu? did you.. bring a lot of stuff.. like last time?" he looked at you with his eyebrows raised as he unzipped the bag. "nope! actually i..." the man paused his words as he completely finished unzipping the bag before dumping the contents of it, and it seemed to be.. multiple packs of pads?! a heating pad, and more other items that are related to menstruations. "brought more!" he said joyfully, having a smirk plastered on his face. "new record babyyy!" he wooed loudly as he let out a laugh while your jaw dropped and your wide eyes blinked at the amount of pads. it was quite strange.. he was quite literally celebrating that he got more the amount of pads than before, but you just let out a little sigh of pleasure as you watched him celebrate. you then came closer to him, and gave him a kiss unexpectedly— causing him slowly turn his head towards you, he shivered from the feeling of your warm lips on his cheeks while his arms were wrapping himself. he was also giggling uncontrollably, and his cheeks were tinted pink. oh, how you so much you just love your himbo-of-a-boyfriend so much ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡—NISHINOYA YŪ
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's quite similar to tanaka in a way because he's trained by him! tanaka taught him the way he learned it, by googling and watching videos of course. (don't take that sentence wrong) nishinoya has gone through tanaka's training by texting him and pretending to be you. he honestly did well, but when it happens, it actually happens.. he's surprisingly nervous. but nonetheless, he still buys your needed item with a swirling uneasy feeling in his stomach. after buying the pad you were in need of, he skipped his way to your house. as he faced your front door, he let out a heavy breath before knocking on your door. you then heard the knock and swung the door open, just to see nishinoya handing out the plastic bag to you with his eyes closed. it's as if he was a young boy who just started courting you, having a bouquet in his hands standing in front of your parent's house. you giggled at the sight of your boyfriend as you planted a kiss on his forehead to show your thankfulness. he just smiled, and he returned your kiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡—WAKATOSHI USHIJIMA
Tumblr media
he's very straightforward with things, so when you chatted him he just simply followed your request and bought it with no trouble. he doesn't think that buying pads for someone is embarrassing. he thinks that pads are as normal buying anything else. after you texted him, he headed to a nearby store and bought a pack of pads. then he exited out of the door and made his way to your house. when he arrived at your house, he gave you the pads with a soft smile on his face. "thank youu ushijimaa!", he nodded at you. "do you need anything else? i can help you with anything." he said, smiling again, "hmm yea actually.. can you buy painkillers? these cramps are killing me! get it?" your awful pun made the man to chuckle. "mhmm, i knew it." you raised your brow at his statement while you watched him grab something out of his pocket hoodie. he then hands you out a bottle of painkillers. "babyyy?? omg thank you so much!" the man had a knowing smile on his lips, "seems like i guessed right." he emitted out a quiet laugh. and just as you were about to hug him, a pain of wave came up on your stomach, causing your arms to only hover around his body, and you groaned in pain. he sighed with a smile, and he did the hug for you, his large arms wrapped around your body. "c'mon now, let's head inside and make you drink up this pill." you nodded, and he placed his on your shoulder and guided you to your home. "we'll continue to hug once you feel better." he assured you, placing a soft kiss atop of your head.

I want it, I got it!
Haikyuu boys x Rich!Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Summary: He with a rich boyfriend who loves to spoil him!
— Characters: Hinata, Nishinoya, Daichi.
— Tags/Genre: Fluff | Male!Reader
Tumblr media
Hinata Shoyo
He really has no idea what you saw in him: someone who is clumsy and who never achieved a high grade in any subject at school, and of course, who doesn't have a lot of money
His lively personality always made your day the best ever, it seemed that being by his side made you 100% better if you were sad. If you could, you could give the whole world just to him... but wait, you can!
Hinata is already getting worried about the amount of gifts you give him, his bedroom is tiny and he's almost running out of space for all the things you buy for him.
And you know how much he loves volleyball, so most of his gifts are based on that: official merchs, new equipments, and one time you even took him to see an official match!
He sometimes feels insecure about not being able to give you an expensive gift like the ones you give him, but already you love all the things he gives you.
It doesn't matter if it's just a souvenir like a cute keychain he saw and immediately remembered you for, or some snack he thought you'd like, the big smile on your face is enough to him realize how much you adore him.
One day, Hinata was doing his daily bike ride to school, and he ended up getting distracted watching the landscape, which resulted in a bad fall on the asphalt. He only had a few scratches, but the same couldn't be said about his beloved bike.
On the same day, you showed up at his door with a new bike that is identical to his old one.
At that moment he was SO happy, he was so attached to that bike, and no matter how many times you offered to give him a ride to the school with your car, he always preferred to cycle, an act that was part of his routine.
Nishinoya Yuu
He LOVES to be spoiled, and you love to spoil those you care about, so it's no exaggeration to say that you were made for each other.
I think he wouldn't be the kind of guy who would ask you to buy luxury things like designer clothes, but rather things that only an eleven-year-old boy would ask for.
"[Name]!! Did you see that commercial for those sneakers that glow in the dark!?" "Let’s go to the amusement park this weekend pleaseeee!!"
And if you give him a gift, expect to get one in return!!
He would love to give you gifts, especially sweets or snacks. Even if you insist that you pay, he always buys you and him a popsicle when leaving school.
But it's not just gifts that he likes to be pampered with, he's someone who REALLY likes physical affection, so don't be surprised if one day he stays attached to you like a tick for the rest of the day.
Many people in your life already said they liked your company/said they were your friend just out of interest in the fact that you have a lot of money, but Nishinoya was never that kind of person.
You can be sure that with money or not, he would be with you no matter what, because what really attracted him was your personality that matched his.
Sawamura Daichi
Daichi is definitely that type of person who is always embarrassed when he receives a gift, in addition to being a great saver too, which often leads him to worry about his significant other's expenses (even if that's the last thing you're worried about lol).
"Y-You really didn't need to...!" "Please don't worry about me, I really don't need another sports sneakers, the one I already have is still in good condition!" Says Daichi holding up a pair of worn-out sneakers.
The truth is that he is not someone who has little money, the real problem is that he is a cheapskate, someone of the type who is stubborn about their own savings. He will only buy something new if it is already in a state of disintegration...💀
But you are here to change that! Always reassure him that everything is fine and that you really don't mind spending your own money just to see his happiness, as every penny is worth it.
By becoming more confident about this matter, Daichi will no longer worry about it as much and will try to be more relaxed about it.
For the team, it's as if you two were Karasuno's parents: Daichi being the responsible and sometimes strict father, and you being the cool and caring father who always gives the best gifts on holidays (see what I mean?)
You care about the team as much as Sawamura, as you were able to see up close the trajectory and evolution of everyone by his side.
So you always love to help everyone on the team if they are going through any difficulties.
Couldn't find a bus to take part in a match? In the same second you find one ten times better than the one they were planning to travel on. Is any gym equipment damaged? The next day you show up with a brand new one. Are they hungry after a long day of training? When you all leave school, you immediately go straight to a steakhouse, all expenses at your own expense, of course.
It's canon that Daichi is one of the characters with the biggest appetite in the series, so it's not an exaggeration to say that most of the things you give him as gifts are edible.
And as much as you can buy whatever food you want, he always preferred your homemade food.
The way you prepare each dish, always making them with the greatest care in the world, was certainly something that was worth much more to him than fancy and expensive things.

start somewhere ☆ nishinoya yuu x reader
Tumblr media
synopsis: second-year reader sometimes feels like their physical education class is out to get them. but maybe, their classmate might help turn things around. details: mild hurt/comfort | romantic/platonic relationship | 1,678 words | gn! reader | my entry for @phantasmaebg warnings: this is based on my insecurities related to exercise and sports back in high school, so please be cautious if it’s sensitive for you!
Tumblr media
Physical education could be fun at times, but if there was one thing you dreaded every period, it was the warm-ups.
They were necessary, sure. You’d heard all the reasons: injury prevention, elevated body temperature, mental prep—the whole spiel.
The problem was that your physical education teacher seemed to enjoy torturing your class. Or maybe it was just you.
It always started the same way: some stretching and light jogging that lulled you into a false sense of security. But then came the dreaded laps. Ten relentless minutes of running around the court.
It also sucked that for this school year, physical education happened to be your first period—the prime time of your lethargy.
You at least had the foresight to fuel yourself with breakfast, but it still felt like an entire day had passed by the time 9:00 AM rolled around.
And now, at 8:00 AM, your class is walking to the school gym, chattering normally as if your impending doom wasn’t looming ahead.
You sigh to yourself when your teacher waves at all of you, far too cheerfully.
“Alright, you know the drill. We’ll be practicing handball again before our practical exam in two weeks. But first, our warm-up laps.” She grins before continuing. “Remember, if I reach the last person and touch their shoulder, one additional lap!”
As always, the class groans in unison. You avoid making eye contact with anyone.
You’ve always wondered if anyone was secretly annoyed by how slow you run; it’s just a miracle that you’ve managed to avoid adding any extra laps so far.
Everyone lines up their water bottles against the wall, proceeding to do some stretching and jogging in place. You follow suit, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in your gut.
Eventually, your classmates situate themselves behind the makeshift starting line: a long strip of masking tape on the hardwood floor. You drag your feet, trying to position yourself somewhere in the middle, a little closer to the front.
The sound of the whistle blows, and everyone starts running.
Despite the “head start” you give yourself, you’re reminded of why your attempts are always futile.
One by one, your peers start to pass you by the halfway mark. By the time you’ve completed one lap, you’re dead last. Again.
Your lungs start to burn, your breath turning ragged. The sharp and constant inhale-exhale rhythm makes your throat dry.
Internally, you scream at yourself to keep going, noticing the gap between you and the classmates in front of you starting to make itself clear.
You survive three laps before your teacher yells, “Let’s go, guys! Keep it up!” And at this point, you think she must be a sadist as she picks up the pace.
By now, your heartbeat pounds wildly in your ears, drowning out everything else. You lose count of the laps, just desperate for it to end.
A small pain also starts to stab you in the side. How unfortunate it is to get a stitch now, of all times.
“I’m almost there!” When you look behind you, your PE teacher is just a few feet away, laughing as the other students yell in protest. “Finish the lap! Come on!”
Cursing internally, you grit your teeth and keep running.
You will not be the reason your classmates will be inconvenienced.
You can’t, even if you feel like you’re going to drop to the ground any second now.
Though the starting line felt impossibly far, you managed to step over the tape through sheer willpower.
Cheers erupt from the class. You’re not sure if they’re celebrating the end of the warm-up or your miraculous escape. You’re too exhausted to care.
Whatever it is, it’s over.
“Good job, everyone! You survived.” Your teacher announces. “Now, take a little break, I’ll just call the staff to help get the rest of the equipment.”
You barely register the rest of her words. At last, the agony for the week is over.
The world spins for a while as you wait for your heartbeat to slow down. All you can do is collapse onto the floor, breathing heavily.
A dry itch rises in your throat and you cough to relieve it. However, you hold yourself back from overdoing it—you’d prefer if your stomach’s contents don’t make a reappearance.
Man, you hate this feeling.
“Hey, are you okay?”
The unfamiliar voice cuts through your thoughts, startling you. You blink, vision still a little spotty.
“Huh?” You breathe out, disoriented.
You vaguely see a hand extended toward you, and you take it. Your classmate helps you to your feet, guiding you to a nearby bench where you can sit down.
“Here.” He hands you your water bottle. You thank him before taking a long, long sip. Briefly, you wonder how he knew it was yours.
“I thought you passed out on the floor! Are you feeling dizzy or something?”
Putting your bottle down, you come face-to-face with Nishinoya Yuu.
Oh.
“Uh…” You’re a little overwhelmed by his concern, as no one usually bothers to ask. “Well, kinda, but I just need a breather. All that running is, um, a lot for me.”
You avoid his gaze.
Nishinoya was always behind or right next to your teacher. You remember how he’d ask for permission to run ahead, only to have his suggestion turned down every time.
You were in his direct line of sight these past few weeks.
What would he think of you?
“That’s alright.”
At his response, you freeze.
“What?”
“I said it’s alright,” he gives you a gentle smile, a contrast to his usual exuberance. “Running isn’t easy.”
You pause, unsure of what you could even say. He seems to notice your shift in mood.
“Is something wrong?” He tilts his head. “You feelin’ anything weird?”
“No, it’s not that.”
When you take a hesitant look at Nishinoya, there’s something about his expression that seems so…welcoming.
It feels like you could tell him anything.
“Then what is it?” His tone is laced a with genuine curiosity.
Just like that, you cave.
“I know I’m unfit,” you admit quietly, your eyes falling to the floor. “I know it’s not great for my health, and I’m trying my best. But it’s hard when… when everyone can see how far behind I am. I feel like they’re judging me.”
He doesn’t interrupt, patiently waiting for you to finish. You feel the weight of his stare as you continue.
“Maybe I’m just making excuses. Everyone else seems to be doing fine, it might just be me. And that probably sounds insulting to people like you.”
“People like me?” His voice softens as he moves a little closer to you.
“You play volleyball, right? I assumed that’s where all the bruises on your arms are from.” You gesture to them.
“Ah, yeah. You’re right.” He lightly brushes his arms, mottled with small purple and yellow marks. “But, what do you mean, insulting?”
“Well for one, you’re a school athlete,” you state. “You’re exempted from PE, yet you still-”
“Wait,” he cuts you off. “Exempted?”
“Yeah?” You turn to see him wearing a very perplexed expression.
“That’s a thing?”
A silence falls between the two of you.
Does he not…
You clear your throat. “You didn’t know?”
“I don’t actually know what exempted means?” He chuckles nervously.
You blink, momentarily stunned at the sudden turn in the conversation. “Um, it means that because you’re an athlete, you’re not required to participate in PE classes.”
“But why?” His disbelief is evident, like the idea of skipping PE is absolutely incredulous.
“Well, you already do a lot of training, don’t you?”
He nods. “Morning and late afternoon. But a short PE class doesn’t hurt, though.”
You stare at him, speechless. Wow.
“Anyway, that’s the rule I know of,” you reply. “They started it this year after the other sports teams complained.”
“Oh,” Nishinoya says blankly, trying to take it all in.
“You really had no idea?”
“Nope.” He scratches the back of his neck.
You nearly chuckle yourself at the absurdity of it all. “No wonder sensei looked so surprised when you asked to join PE. I thought she seemed hesitant when she let you in.”
“Yeah!” His eyes widen, as if he’s just pieced it together. “I thought it was weird that she kept double-checking, but I didn’t think much of it.”
There’s a brief pause before he grins at you. “Anyway, sorry, what were you saying earlier?”
It takes you a second to remember what he’s talking about. “Ah, right. Um. It’s just that I feel a little stupid making excuses when athletes like you do so much physical activity every day.”
“But you’re not an athlete?”
“Ah, yes, but-”
“Then no one expects you to train like me.” He frowns slightly. “Unless that’s what you want?”
Your breath hitches.
What do you want?
You swallow, shaking your head slowly. “No. I just…I just want to do well enough.”
“Well enough?”
“Just enough to stay active. Or maybe…enough to catch up to the rest.”
Nishinoya grows quiet for a moment, and you rush to explain.
“Sorry, I don’t really know the specifics-”
“Want me to help you out?”
You nearly give yourself whiplash as you look at him. “What? Help me?
“Yeah,” he says like it’s the most normal thing in the world. “Wanna run in the morning together? Could help you with endurance. We’ll start slow, see what you can handle, and go from there.”
Your jaw drops at his offer.
“You want to…but wait, you have training and-”
“It's fine! I’m always happy to help anyone out!” He beams. “Plus, training is always more fun with a partner. What do you say?”
Warmth blooms in your chest.
“You’d really help me?”
“Of course!” He replies earnestly.
Would it be crazy to think Nishinoya was sent by the gods?
“You sure?” You lower your voice. “I don’t want to bother you over something that seems so simple.”
“Nah.” There’s a convincing glint in his eye that gives you hope. “Besides, we all start somewhere.”

I'm not sure if you're still accepting request but I want to try to send one. I already tried to send this request to some writers here who's accepting request but sadly they didn't noticed.
This idea might be cliche story for Nishinoya but I want to see how you do it with your style of writing.
3rd year Nishinoya x kouhai female reader oneshot. The reader is quite smitten for Nishinoya that leads to love confession before her senpai graduates from highschool. The early morning sun filtered through the tall windows of Karasuno High School, casting a warm, golden glow across the empty corridors. As a second-year student, you had grown accustomed to the serene tranquility that enveloped the school before the morning rush. Today, however, felt different. Your heart was fluttering in your chest, a mix of excitement and anxiety that had become a familiar companion over the past few months. The reason for this upheaval in your otherwise calm life was none other than Nishinoya Yuu, the energetic and charismatic libero of the boys' volleyball team.
Your first encounter with Nishinoya had been nothing short of memorable. It was during the first week of the new school year, and you were still finding your way around the labyrinthine halls of Karasuno High. Lost and frustrated, you had been wandering aimlessly when you heard a cheerful voice call out to you.
"Hey, you look a bit lost! Need some help?"
Turning around, you saw him for the first time. Nishinoya Yuu stood there, a bright smile on his face, his spiky hair and confident demeanor instantly catching your attention. You had read about the infamous "Guardian Deity" of Karasuno in the school newsletter, but seeing him in person was an entirely different experience. He radiated an infectious energy that immediately put you at ease.
Blushing slightly, you nodded. "Y-Yes, please. I'm trying to find the science lab."
Nishinoya's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "No problem! Follow me, I'll show you the way."
As you walked together, he chatted animatedly about the school, his love for volleyball, and the upcoming matches. You found yourself captivated by his passion and the genuine kindness in his eyes. By the time you reached the science lab, you realized you had barely said a word, too engrossed in listening to him.
"Here we are," he announced with a flourish. "If you ever need help again, just look for me. I'm Nishinoya Yuu, by the way."
Smiling shyly, you introduced yourself. "Thank you, Nishinoya-senpai. I'm [Y/N]."
From that moment on, your days at Karasuno High were irrevocably changed. You found yourself looking forward to any opportunity to catch a glimpse of him, whether it was during lunch breaks, in the corridors, or at the volleyball matches you began attending religiously. Watching him play was mesmerizing; his agility, his unwavering determination, and the way he seemed to defy gravity as he leaped to make impossible saves left you in awe.
Your friends quickly noticed your growing infatuation and teased you about it endlessly. "You should just talk to him," they urged, but the thought of approaching Nishinoya outside of those chance encounters left you paralyzed with nerves. What if he didn't remember you? What if he thought you were just another fan?
Despite your reservations, you couldn't help but cherish the small moments that you shared. One afternoon, you were sitting in the courtyard, engrossed in a book, when a familiar voice interrupted your thoughts.
"Hey, [Y/N], what are you reading?"
Startled, you looked up to see Nishinoya standing in front of you, his usual bright smile in place. You felt your heart skip a beat as you struggled to find your voice.
"O-Oh, um, it's just a novel for…class," you stammered, holding up the book for him to see.
Nishinoya's eyes lit up with interest. "Cool! I like reading sports magazines and manga too. What's it about?"
As you explained the plot, you couldn't help but notice how attentive he was, his eyes never leaving yours. The conversation flowed more easily than you had anticipated, and for a moment, it felt like you were the only two people in the world.
"Well, I should get going," Nishinoya said eventually, glancing at his watch. "Practice starts soon. It was nice talking to you, [Y/N]. See you around!"
You watched him walk away, your heart racing. Every interaction, no matter how brief, left you feeling like you were floating on air. You replayed those moments in your mind over and over again, finding solace in the fact that he seemed to remember you.
Your shyness around Nishinoya was both a blessing and a curse. It meant that every glance, every smile he sent your way felt like a precious gift, but it also meant that you struggled to express your feelings openly. You found yourself writing letters you never intended to send, pouring your heart out on paper in a way you could never do in person.
One particularly vivid memory stood out among the rest. It was during a particularly intense volleyball match against Aoba Johsai. You were in the stands, your eyes glued to the court as Nishinoya and his teammates fought valiantly. The atmosphere was electric, the tension palpable as the score remained neck and neck.
In a moment of sheer brilliance, Nishinoya made an incredible save, diving across the court and sending the ball back into play. The crowd erupted in cheers, and you found yourself on your feet, clapping and shouting his name.
After the match, you lingered near the gym, hoping for a chance to congratulate him. When he finally emerged, sweaty and exhausted but beaming with pride, you gathered all your courage and approached him.
"Nishinoya-senpai, that was amazing! You were incredible out there."
He grinned, wiping the sweat from his brow. "Thanks, [Y/N]! I'm glad you enjoyed the match. It means a lot to have your support."
His words sent a thrill through you, and you felt your cheeks heat up. "Of course! I'll always cheer for you and the team."
From then on, your admiration for Nishinoya only grew. You admired his dedication, his unwavering spirit, and the way he always seemed to find joy in everything he did. Every day, you looked forward to the moments when your paths would cross, even if it was just a fleeting glance or a quick exchange of words.
As the school year progressed, you found yourself becoming more involved in school activities, partly as a way to be closer to him. You joined the student council, started helping out with the volleyball club's events, and even took up photography, hoping to capture the essence of the team's dynamic and Nishinoya's incredible plays.
Despite your efforts, your shyness remained a constant hurdle. There were times when you caught Nishinoya looking at you, a curious expression on his face, but you always looked away, too afraid to meet his gaze. Your friends continued to encourage you, insisting that you should take the plunge and tell him how you felt, but you couldn't shake the fear of rejection.
In the quiet moments, when you were alone with your thoughts, you often wondered what it would be like to confess your feelings. You imagined the scenarios, rehearsed the words in your mind, but when faced with the reality of it, your courage always seemed to falter.
The gym was bustling with activity as the boys' volleyball team practiced their drills, the sound of sneakers squeaking on the polished floor and the rhythmic thud of the volleyballs reverberating in the large space. You had come to the gym after your student council meeting, hoping to catch a glimpse of Nishinoya in action. He was, as always, a whirlwind of energy and skill, diving and leaping with an intensity that never failed to impress you.
As you stood at the edge of the gym, watching the team, you noticed a small group entering the building. It took a moment for you to recognize them, but when you did, your heart skipped a beat. Kiyoko Shimizu, no longer the team manager but still as poised and beautiful as ever, walked in with Daichi, Sugawara and Asahi, two former team members who had also graduated. They were here to visit, their presence immediately causing a stir among the current team members.
Your eyes were drawn to Nishinoya and his best friend, Tanaka Ryu. The moment they spotted Kiyoko, their faces lit up with unmistakable excitement. They exchanged a quick, knowing glance before sprinting across the gym, their voices rising in a chorus of enthusiastic shouts.
"Kiyoko-san! Kiyoko-san!" Nishinoya and Tanaka yelled in unison, their exuberance echoing through the gym. They skidded to a halt in front of her, their expressions a mixture of awe and adoration. With the two of them practically bouncing on their heels, their eyes shining with a fervent admiration that was almost comical in its intensity.
Kiyoko smiled warmly at them, clearly accustomed to their antics. "Hello, Nishinoya, Tanaka. It's good to see you both."
Seeing them together like that, the way Nishinoya's face brightened at her presence, was like a punch to the gut. You had known he admired her, but witnessing it firsthand brought a fresh wave of hurt. The way he looked at her, the sheer joy and admiration in his eyes, made you feel invisible. It was a stark reminder that no matter how much you liked him, his heart seemed to belong to someone else.
You watched as Nishinoya and Tanaka vied for Kiyoko's attention, each trying to outdo the other with their antics. They were like two eager puppies, desperate for a pat on the head from their beloved owner. The rest of the team watched with amused smiles, clearly used to this display.
"Alright, alright, settle down, you two," Daichi said, chuckling as he placed a hand on Tanaka's shoulder. "We're here to watch the practice, not disrupt it."
Nishinoya nodded vigorously, his enthusiasm undiminished. "Right! We'll show you how much we've improved, Kiyoko-san!"
The practice resumed, but your heart wasn't in it anymore. You felt a hollow ache in your chest as you watched Nishinoya play with renewed vigor, clearly wanting to impress Kiyoko. The way he moved, the intensity in his eyes, all of it was directed towards her, and it hurt more than you had expected.
You tried to focus on other things, on the other players, but your eyes kept drifting back to Nishinoya. You couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy and sadness, knowing that his heart was set on someone who was out of reach. The realization made you question your own feelings, wondering if you would ever be able to compete with the pedestal he had placed Kiyoko on.
As practice came to an end, you decided to leave quietly, slipping out of the gym before anyone could notice. The cool evening air hit your face as you stepped outside, and you took a deep breath, trying to steady your emotions. It was painful to see Nishinoya so infatuated with someone else, but you couldn't blame him. Kiyoko was everything you admired—beautiful, strong, and kind. It was no wonder he looked up to her.
Walking home, you resolved to continue supporting Nishinoya from afar, even if it meant dealing with the heartache. You couldn't change his feelings, but you could be there for him, cheering him on and finding joy in his successes.
—-
The morning began with a sense of determination you hadn't felt in a long time. Today was the day you would finally confess to Nishinoya Yuu. Your friends had spent the entire previous evening pumping you up, convincing you that this was your moment. Their encouragement echoed in your mind as you stood in front of the mirror, psyching yourself up.
"You got this, [Y/N]. Just be confident," you whispered to your reflection before heading out the door.
At school, your friends gathered around you, their eyes full of excitement and anticipation. "Today's the day, right?" one of them asked, grinning.
You nodded, your heart already pounding in your chest. "Yeah, today's the day."
The first opportunity came during the morning break. You spotted Nishinoya near the vending machines, chatting with Tanaka. Summoning all your courage, you approached him, your hands trembling slightly.
"Nishinoya-senpai," you began, but before you could say anything else, a group of first-year students crowded around the vending machines, pushing you aside.
"Sorry!" one of them said, not noticing your disappointment.
Nishinoya smiled at you apologetically. "Catch you later, [Y/N]!" he called as he was swept away by the crowd.
You sighed, feeling a pang of frustration. "Almost," you muttered to yourself.
The next chance came at lunchtime. You had spotted him sitting under a tree in the courtyard, eating his lunch alone. This was perfect. Taking a deep breath, you walked over, your heart racing.
"Hey, Nishinoya-senpai," you said, trying to keep your voice steady.
He looked up, surprised but pleased to see you. "Oh, hey, [Y/N]! What's up?"
"I was wondering if we could talk," you started, but before you could continue, the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch break. Nishinoya jumped to his feet, grabbing his things.
"Sorry, gotta get to class! Talk later?" he said, already heading towards the building.
You watched him go, feeling deflated. "Later," you echoed weakly.
As the day wore on, you found yourself growing more anxious and frustrated. Every time you tried to approach him, something got in the way. During the afternoon break, you saw him near the library, but just as you were about to call out to him, the loudspeaker crackled to life, announcing an urgent student council meeting. By the time you got out of the meeting, he was gone.
By the end of the day, you were exhausted and disheartened. You had tried so many times and failed each time. As you walked home, the sky painted in hues of orange and pink by the setting sun, you couldn't help but feel like giving up. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
Passing by the gymnasium, you heard the familiar sound of a volleyball hitting the floor. Curiosity got the better of you, and you peeked inside. There, alone in the dimly lit gym, was Nishinoya. He was practicing his receives, his movements sharp and focused.
Something inside you stirred. This was your moment. No interruptions, no crowds—just you and him. Taking a deep breath, you walked into the gym, the sound of your footsteps echoing softly.
"Nishinoya-senpai," you called, your voice wavering slightly.
He looked up, surprised to see you. "Oh, hey, [Y/N]! What are you doing here?"
You walked closer, your heart pounding. "I... I wanted to talk to you."
"Sure, what's up?" he asked, wiping sweat from his brow and giving you his undivided attention.
You took a deep breath, steeling yourself. "Nishinoya-senpai, there's something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time."
He tilted his head, curiosity and a hint of concern in his eyes. "What is it?"
Your hands were trembling, but you pressed on. "I've admired you for a while now. I love your passion, your energy, and how you always give your all in everything you do. You inspire me, and... I really like you. I was wondering if... if you would like to go on a date with me."
The silence that followed felt like an eternity. Nishinoya's eyes widened, and for a moment, you feared the worst. But then, a slow smile spread across his face.
"Wow, [Y/N], I didn't know you felt that way," he said, his voice gentle. "I’m really flattered. You’re always so kind and supportive. I’d love to go on a date with you."
Relief and joy surged through you, and you couldn't help but smile back. "Really? You mean it?"
He nodded, his grin widening. "Yeah, really. How about this weekend? We can go to that new café in town."
"That sounds perfect," you said, feeling a lightness in your chest you hadn't felt all day.
Nishinoya laughed, a sound full of warmth and sincerity. "Great! It's a date, then."
As you left the gymnasium together, the sky darkening into twilight, you felt a sense of accomplishment and happiness that made all the failed attempts worth it. Nishinoya had agreed to go on a date with you, and that was more than you could have hoped for.
The weekend couldn't come fast enough. The anticipation of your first date with Nishinoya kept you on edge, your mind racing with excitement and nerves. When Saturday morning finally arrived, you spent extra time getting ready, carefully choosing an outfit that was both casual and a little bit special. You wanted to look your best for him.
The café Nishinoya had suggested was a quaint, cozy place on the edge of town, known for its warm ambiance and delicious pastries. You arrived a little early, your heart pounding with a mix of excitement and anxiety. As you waited outside, you couldn't help but fidget, checking your reflection in the café's window every few minutes.
"Hey, [Y/N]!" Nishinoya's voice called out, breaking through your thoughts.
You turned to see him jogging towards you, his face lit up with a cheerful smile. He looked effortlessly cool in his casual clothes, his hair still slightly tousled from his usual style. The sight of him made your heart skip a beat.
"Hi, Nishinoya-senpai," you greeted, smiling nervously.
"Call me Yuu," he said with a grin. "We're on a date, after all."
Your cheeks flushed at his words, but you nodded. "Okay, Yuu."
He opened the door for you, and you both stepped inside the café. The smell of fresh coffee and baked goods enveloped you, instantly making you feel at ease. You found a cozy corner table and settled in, the soft hum of conversation around you creating a comfortable background noise.
"So, what do you want to try?" Yuu asked, scanning the menu.
"I heard their pastries are really good," you suggested. "Maybe we could share a few?"
"Sounds like a plan!" he agreed. "I'll get us some drinks. How about a cappuccino for you?"
"That would be great, thanks," you said, appreciating his thoughtfulness.
As Yuu went to place the order, you couldn't help but watch him, admiring the way he moved with such confidence and ease. It was hard to believe that you were actually on a date with him, the boy you had admired from afar for so long.
When he returned, he carried a tray with two steaming cups of cappuccino and an assortment of pastries. "Here we go," he said, setting the tray down. "Hope you're hungry!"
The pastries were as delicious as you had heard, and the cappuccinos were the perfect complement. As you ate and sipped your drinks, the conversation flowed easily. Yuu was full of stories about his adventures with the volleyball team, and you found yourself laughing more than you had in a long time.
"And then," Yuu said, chuckling, "Tanaka tripped over his own feet and fell face-first into the sand. We were supposed to be practicing our dives, but it turned into a comedy show."
You laughed, imagining the scene. "Sounds like you guys have a lot of fun."
"Yeah, we do," he agreed, his eyes twinkling. "But it's also hard work. We push each other to be better."
The hours seemed to fly by, and before you knew it, the sun was beginning to set. You both stepped outside the café, the evening air cool and refreshing.
"Thanks for today, Yuu," you said, feeling a warm glow in your chest. "I had a really great time."
"Me too, [Y/N]," he replied, his smile genuine. "Hey, there's a festival next weekend. Would you like to go with me?"
Your heart leapt at the invitation. "I'd love to!"
"Great! It's a date, then," he said, giving you a playful wink. "I'll pick you up at six?"
"Perfect," you agreed, feeling a surge of excitement.
The week passed in a blur of anticipation. You couldn't wait for the festival, imagining the fun you would have and the memories you would make. When the day finally arrived, you spent extra time getting ready, choosing a light summer dress that felt perfect for the occasion.
Yuu arrived promptly at six, looking excited and a little nervous. "Ready to go?" he asked, offering his hand.
You took it, feeling a spark of electricity at the contact. "Absolutely."
The festival was a riot of colors and sounds. Lanterns hung from every available surface, their warm light casting a magical glow over the bustling crowd. Stalls lined the streets, offering everything from delicious street food to handcrafted trinkets. The air was filled with the cheerful sounds of laughter, music, and the occasional pop of fireworks.
"This place is amazing," you said, looking around in wonder.
"Yeah, it is," Yuu agreed. "Let's check out the food stalls first. I'm starving."
You wandered through the festival, sampling various treats and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Yuu was full of energy, his enthusiasm contagious as he pointed out different stalls and suggested things to try.
"Have you ever tried takoyaki?" he asked, leading you to a stall that smelled heavenly.
You shook your head. "No, but I've always wanted to."
"You're in for a treat," he said, ordering a plate for you both. "These are the best."
He was right—the takoyaki was delicious, the perfect blend of flavors and textures. As you ate, you found yourself relaxing, the nervousness of earlier fading away in the warm, friendly atmosphere.
"Let's go see the games," Yuu suggested after you finished eating. "I'm pretty good at the ring toss."
You spent the next hour trying out various games, laughing as you both failed spectacularly at some and triumphed at others. Yuu won you a small stuffed animal at the ring toss, presenting it to you with a proud grin.
"For you," he said, his eyes shining with happiness.
"Thank you, Yuu," you said, accepting the gift with a smile.
As the evening wore on, the sky grew darker, and the festival lights shone even brighter. The highlight of the night was the fireworks display, and Yuu led you to a spot on a hill that offered the perfect view.
"Here, this is the best place to watch," he said, sitting down on the grass and patting the spot next to him.
You sat down, feeling the warmth of his presence beside you. As the first fireworks exploded in the sky, painting it with brilliant colors, you couldn't help but feel a sense of magic in the air.
"This is amazing," you said softly, watching the fireworks in awe.
"Yeah," Yuu agreed, his voice just as soft. "It really is."
For a moment, you both sat in comfortable silence, watching the display. Then, Yuu turned to you, his expression serious but warm.
"[Y/N], I had a really great time with you tonight," he said. "I know this might sound sudden, but... would you like to go out with me again? Like…as my girlfriend?"
Your heart skipped a beat at his words, a mix of surprise and joy flooding through you. "I'd love to, Yuu," you said, your voice barely more than a whisper.
His face lit up with a radiant and full of love smile. "Really? You’re my girlfriend then?"
You nodded, feeling a warmth spread through you that had nothing to do with the summer night. "Really, I love you, yuu…"
As the final fireworks burst into the sky, his eyes widen and he leaned close to you, his lips brushing yours as his hand were on your neck, at the last fireworks, he smashed your lips with yours. You couldn't help but feel that this was the beginning of something wonderful...
“I love you too…[Y/N].”
Tumblr media
It had been a month since you and Yuu had confessed your feelings under the fireworks. The two of you had enjoyed your moments together, keeping your relationship private, savoring the thrill of stolen glances and secret smiles. However, today felt different. You had decided to visit him during his volleyball practice, a gesture that hinted at your readiness to share your relationship with the world.
As you approached the gym, the familiar sounds of laughter, shouts, and the thud of volleyballs greeted you. You paused at the entrance, taking a deep breath, the scent of sweat and the sight of the team hard at work filling your senses. Your heart pounded with anticipation, and you felt a mix of excitement and nervousness.
There he was—Nishinoya, your Yuu, in the center of it all, his energy contagious as he encouraged his teammates. You couldn't help but smile at the sight of him, so alive and full of passion. Gathering your courage, you stepped into the gym and walked toward him.
"Yuu!" you called out, your voice cutting through the noise.
He turned, his face lighting up when he saw you. Without a second thought, he jogged over, a wide grin on his face. Before you could say anything, he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you close, pressing a quick but affectionate kiss to your lips. Your cheeks flushed, and your heart raced at the unexpected public display of affection.
The gym fell silent. Every pair of eyes was on the two of you, shock and curiosity etched on their faces. The team had seen you around before, but this was the first time they witnessed such intimacy between you and their libero.
"Whoa, Nishinoya!" Tanaka's voice broke the silence, filled with surprise and amusement. "Did we just see that right?"
Nishinoya kept his arm around your waist, his confidence unwavering. "Yeah, you did," he said, his voice loud and clear. "Everyone, this is [Y/N]. We're dating."
A chorus of reactions followed.
"About time!" Sugawara said with a knowing smile, nudging Daichi. "I had a feeling something was going on."
"Well, I didn't see that coming," Asahi admitted, scratching his head, but his expression was warm and accepting.
Hinata and Kageyama looked at each other, eyes wide. "No way! Nishinoya-senpai has a girlfriend?" Hinata exclaimed, his voice filled with awe.
Kageyama nodded slowly, still processing the information. "I guess we should've known. He's always been bold."
Tsukishima adjusted his glasses, a smirk playing on his lips. "This explains why he's been in such a good mood lately."
Yamaguchi elbowed him lightly, grinning. "Come on, Tsukki, let them have their moment."
Tanaka, however, took a more dramatic approach. He fell to his knees, clutching his chest as if in pain. "Noya, how could you?" he wailed, his voice filled with mock sorrow. "I thought we were best friends! How could you keep this from me?"
Nishinoya rolled his eyes but laughed, clearly amused by his friend's theatrics. "Relax, Tanaka. It’s not like I was hiding a secret identity or anything."
"Still," Tanaka sniffed dramatically, wiping away imaginary tears, "I expected better. I'm heartbroken, man."
You couldn't help but giggle at the exaggerated display. "I'm sorry, Tanaka," you said, trying to keep a straight face. "We'll make it up to you, I promise."
Tanaka's expression brightened instantly. "You better! I expect to be the first to know about all future developments!"
Nishinoya looked down at you, his eyes shining with happiness. "I wanted everyone to know," he said softly, just for you to hear. "No more hiding."
You nodded, feeling a rush of relief and joy. "I'm glad," you whispered back.
The rest of practice continued with a new energy in the air. The team seemed to feed off the excitement of the reveal, their spirits high and their camaraderie even stronger. You stayed to watch, cheering them on and exchanging smiles with Yuu whenever your eyes met.
After practice ended, the team gathered around you both, eager to know more about your relationship. Nishinoya held your hand proudly, answering their questions with enthusiasm.
"So, how long has this been going on?" Tanaka asked, his curiosity palpable.
"About a month," you replied, glancing at Yuu with a smile. "We wanted to keep it to ourselves for a bit."
Sugawara nodded, his expression understanding. "Makes sense. But we're happy for you guys."
"Thanks, Suga-san," Yuu said, his gratitude genuine. "It means a lot."
As the team dispersed, heading to the locker room to change, Nishinoya pulled you aside, his eyes soft with affection. "Thanks for coming today," he said, brushing a strand of hair from your face. "It made everything feel more real."
"I'm glad I did," you replied, your heart full. "I love you, Yuu."
"I love you too," he said, kissing you again, this time more tenderly.

synopsis: you and noya reunite for your annual Christmas time affair.

Truth be told, you have no reason to keep coming back to your hometown for Christmas. Your family had packed up and moved to a bigger city, closer to you—and yet, every year, since you were 22 and old enough to earn adult money and therefore do whatever you wanted—you made the five hour drive back home.
There was nothing  special in your small town. No specialty shops, no restaurants to write home about, not even friends. All of them had moved to the capital, some even abroad. Maybe that’s what growing up in a small town does to you. You spend your entire childhood and teenage years impatient to get out and when you’re old enough to go, you leave and never come back.
There are only two people exceptions to this. You and Nishinoya Yuu.
You’d barely noticed him in high school, being in separate classes and all. Sometimes you saw him in the cafeteria, most times in the gym—last you heard he did pretty well for himself at volleyball competitions. Now the two of you are older, and come back to the same city the same time every year.
The first time you’d seen him again after high school was when you were walking down Main Street and saw him in the window of the butcher shop, buying cuts of steak for Christmas dinner. Later on, in the bakery, then, by the docks, fishing. He was like a town ghost, popping up at random locations and you were always running by or past him. Something about it seemed eerie, a little too many coincidences. You never really believed in fate or destiny or things like that but that one day you decided to say fuck it and be brave. You walked up to him, held out your hand, and introduced yourself. He took a long hard look at it before telling you he already knew who you were, and that he was waiting for you to show up. Rest is history.
Noya drove a shitty brown old pick up truck. Called her Cassie. Belonged to his pops before he passed. You told him it looked like Mater from the Cars movie and he laughed so hard he couldn’t breathe. He took you out for rides around the town, the occasional beat and sputter of the engine filling the gaps of silence between you until eventually, there were no gaps of silence. He took you to the theater, where it was usually just the two of you, and watch reruns of movies from the archive shelf. You laughed together, cried together, threw popcorn at the screen when the main lead who you disliked appeared on the screen.
You can always count on the holidays to bring people closer. Your high school sociology teacher told you it was the cold air that made people huddle closer for comfort, made it a good excuse to hold someone’s hand—and here he was, reaching for your hand when you were crossing streets at night. You cock an eyebrow but don’t protest and just say that you guess Mr. Anthony was right. The holidays did bring the two of you closer, a lot more than closer. You gained a sense of bravery one night and kissed him when he dropped you off at your place. Surprised even at your own actions, and confused on what to do—you invite him upstairs, and having tea turned into making out and that making out turned into him spending the night and then the two of you spent the rest of December cooped up in your old apartment, kissing and making breakfast together and dancing to your dad’s jazz vinyl that you’d gotten.
The two of you’s favorite past times was dissecting pieces of the two of you together. You wanted to see the person you had missed out on the entirety of high school—how were you supposed to know the boy with the bright smile had a chest that fit the curve your cheek perfectly? Or that the small of his waist was perfect against the palms of your hands? You went through yearbooks and picture albums together, telling the stories behind every photograph. This is when we went on that zoo field trip. These were my friends, we don’t really keep in touch. This was the second dog I had gotten, I can’t bear to think of the first.
One day thumbing through his old wallet, looking over the cards he’d collected—coupons for a shop that had long closed down, a stamp from a shrine a couple towns away—you found an illustration of Lady Godiva, the lady who had been paraded around naked in her town and became a local legend, or myth, or whatever you call it. You held it up with your index and middle finger, turned back to Noya, who was massaging the flesh of your calves. You were sore from running up and down the beach the other day.
“What’s this?” You’d asked.
“Hmm?” He hums, looking up and reaching for the card. He inspects the object in his hands, like recollecting the memory as to how he’d gotten it in the first place and why he’d held onto it.
“It’s an old card I’d gotten from a tarot reader,” he replies after a while. “What she said stuck with me so I kept it.”
“What did she say?”
He winces and rubs the tension out of his eyebrows, leaning back against the handle of the couch. “Something about me always on the outside looking in.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I mean,” he says, “I didn’t have many friends during high school. I mean I had the volleyball gang but after nationals, everyone kind of went their own way. They’d all moved onto bigger things and I was kind of just there. I existed in between crowds—I was loud, but I wasn’t great at making new friends. After graduation, it was a pretty lonely couple of years honestly.”
Your heart broke imagining this; him, drifting after everyone had left. Why hadn’t you reached out sooner? Why hadn’t you befriended him during high school? You shouldn’t have been so focused on your studies. He could’ve taught you to slow down, enjoy the view. He seemed the type.
“So one day, I drive down the beach, like all the way down, maybe 80 miles or so and I see this little fortune shop.”
“Yeah?” You turned around to face him now—lied on top of him, chin propped up on his chest, watching him intently.
“Yeah,” he says, “and I thought: what the hell, went in and had myself read.”
“What did she say? Specifically I mean.”
“Well, she said that she could tell I was lonely, had this aura around me that just showed I was exhausted.”
“Were you?”
“Kind of, I was doing odd jobs then; my pops just passed and I was trying to pay off the debt he’d left.”
“Oh.”
“Mhm,” he hums, “it was a weird time, and I guess she knew that. She said that I spent too much time looking into people’s windows—called me a voyeur.”
“Were you?”
He nods and smiles. “I used to peer into the windows I walked past and see these families having dinner together, or friends gathered around drinking, and wished for something like that. I guess I was just lonely, really lonely.”
You frown. “I’m sorry,” you say.
He waves the idea of pity away. “Don’t be, it wasn’t your fault.”
“So anyways, she gives me this card, tells me to keep it on me and that one day, I won’t be the one looking into windows anymore.”
“Did it work?” You ask, hopeful.
A grin splits his face. You don’t get what’s there to be smiling about. You stare back, confused.
“Well,” he brushes a strand of hair away from your face and tucks it behind your ear, leans forward to kiss your forehead. “You invited me in that night didn’t you?”
He says that night you invited him in, you broke the spell. That dry curse of loneliness that had haunted him and seeped so far into his bones had been lifted when you offered him tea in the dim light of your kitchen. When the two of you slept that night, the skin of your back against his chest, he’d felt a wholeness he’d never felt before—a newfound understanding of the Greek myth that said humans were actually born as pairs. Said he believes in soulmates because of you but that he loved you on purpose.
“I thought of you last night,” he once said over the phone.
“You dreamt of me?” You asked, yawning, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
“No,” he pressed the receiver closer to his mouth, whispering, like he was in your ear. “I thought of you.”
“Mm,” you hum, “what did you think of?”
“I thought of,” his breath hitches, like he’s nervous. “I thought of the way that you felt, the way your skin felt against mine. And I thought of the way you looked while you slept—how rosy your cheeks looked.”
The thing about the relationship was that it was seasonal. You had to go back to work in the big city, and Noya couldn’t, wouldn’t come with you. For whatever reason, he was more attached to this small town than you were, saw something in it that others didn’t. So you had to say goodbye after the first week of January rolled around. Had to go back to living your life in the city—walking down a crowded street, busy cafes and square office cubicles. 12 months would pass, painfully slow before you could see him again. Then, as soon as the calendar struck December 15th, you’d bolt out the door, speed down the highway, five hours down to your little town. When you’d just arrived this year, Noya was already waiting in front of your apartment building, fiddling with a toothpick and leaned against the wall.
You run up to him, hug him, say it’s been too long. His arms wrap around you too. He softens into your embrace.
“12 months without; I thought I was strong to have survived this long, but one embrace from you and I melt.” He says in your ear.
You pull away. Beaming. He does the same.
“Weather’s getting colder,” he says, hands in his pockets, “snowed for the first time since we were like, kids.”
“Yeah, that snow day we had back then?”
He nods his head. “You threw a snowball at me.”
“Our class made a snowman. Called him puddle.”
He raises his eyebrow and laughs. “Bit mean, huh?”
You laugh, not minding the wind whipping at your hair. The streets were caked with snow and slippery, making it nearly impossible to go out to the store or around town. It was December again and you had two whole weeks to play house and drink hot cocoa and sleep in front of the fireplace together. You reached for his hand as the two of you made your way upstairs. You thought back to what your sociology teacher said, and realized, you didn’t mind the cold at all, because you had Noya, and Noya was warm.
So, very warm.
