एकादशी व्रत हिन्दुओ में सबसे अधिक प्रचलित व्रत माना जाता है। वर्ष में चौबीस एकादशियाँ आती हैं, किन्तु इन सब एकादशियों में ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल एकादशी सबसे बढ़कर फल देने वाली समझी जाती है क्योंकि इस एक एकादशी का व्रत रखने से वर्ष भर की एकादशियों के व्रत का फल प्राप्त होता है। निर्जला एकादशी का व्रत अत्यन्त संयम साध्य है। इस युग में यह व्रत सम्पूर्ण सुख़ भोग और अन्त में मोक्ष कहा गया है। कृष्ण पक्ष और शुक्ल पक्ष दोनों पक्षों की एकादशी में अन्न खाना वर्जित है।

निर्जला एकादशी व्रत का पौराणिक महत्त्व और व्याख्यान भी कम रोचक नहीं है। जब सर्वज्ञ वेदव्यास ने पांडवों को चारों पुरुषार्थ: धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष देने वाले एकादशी व्रत का संकल्प कराया था,

*Nirjala Ekadashi - Vrat Katha* Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat is observed today, 13th June 2019. On this day devotees worship Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings. It is also known as Pandava Bhima Ekadashi. Let us read about the legend behind this festival- According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Bhima was a lover of food and wanted to observe all Ekadashi Vrat. But being an ardent food lover he was unable to control his hunger. He further got scared by the thought of Lord Vishnu getting furious for him not being able to complete the Ekadashi Vrat. He then went to Sage Vyasa and asked him for help. Sage Vyas advised Bhima to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi (Without Water and food) once a year. Bhima followed Sage Vyas’s advice and observed Ekadashi Vrat without consuming food and water the whole day. Mohini Ekadashi

Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated during the Shukla Paksha on the Ekadashi (eleventh day) of Vaisakha month (Hindu month). Mohini Ekadashi falls during the months of April-May and is celebrated all over India by Hindus. The fasting of Mohini Ekadashi is done in honour of Lord Vishnu. This fast is undertaken by all Hindus lovers as it helps in cleansing sins from their past births. In Indian folklore, Mohini is the name given to the incarnation of Vishnu Deva and as she showed up Ekadashi tithi, this day is known as Mohini Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is celebrated in North India in the month of Vaisakha however, in Tamilnadu it falls during the month of Chithira. In the Bengali calendar it falls in the month of Jyestho month and the Malayalam calendar it is celebrated in the month of Edava. Hindu celebrate Mohini Ekadashi to seek divine blessings and happy life.

Yogini Ekadashi falls during Krishna Paksha of Ashadha month according to North Indian calendar and during Krishna Paksha of Jyaishta month according to South Indian calendar. Currently it falls in month of June or July in English calendar. Benefits - Fasting on Yogini Ekadashi can purge all sins and provides all luxuries in current life. One can transcend to Swarga Lok after observing Yogini Ekadashi fasting. Yogini Ekadashi is famous in all three Loks. It is believed that Fasting on Yogini Ekadashi is equivalent of feeding 88 thousands Brahamins. Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence. Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due to some reasons one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna. At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day. Nirjala refers to ‘without water’ and Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the lunar month. Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat is, therefore, counted amongst one of the toughest fast of Ekadashi that is observed by the devotees, because the intake of both, food and water is strictly prohibited, while observing this fast. Nirjala Ekadashi falls in the month of Jyestha in the Shukla paksha (June), therefore it is also called “Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi” or “Bhimsani Ekadashi” (Bhim sen, the seond Pandav Brother, had observed this difficult fast). Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha: The legend of Nirjala Ekadashi is connected to Bheem, who was the second and the most powerful Pandava, that is why this Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Bheema Ekadashi. He wanted to observe all the fasts of 24 Ekadashis, but he could not as he was not able to control his hunger. For finding a solution to this problem, he went to sage Vyasa and his grandfather.
