Nightlight Shipping Headcanons
(Paleman x Shade)
For @fandomsareforlife im so sorry I lost ur ask 😭😭
T4T !!! HC Pale to be nonbinary (he/they) and Shade as genderfluid (they/he).
Moon x Sun
Orange cat × black dog
Goth Academia × Light Academia
Cold hands × Warm hands
Pales nickname for Shade is "moonlight"
Shades nickname for Pale is "sunlight"
Pale is an early bird whilst Shade is a night owlz
They're each others muses!! I HC Pale to be an artist and Shade is an author.
Their families are company rivals. Their parents disapprove of their relationship and their siblings dgaf.
Pale is small spoon and Shade is big spoon, even tho Pale is 6 inches taller than Shade.
Shade pretends that he doesn't know how to dance so Pale can teach him. They like seeing Pale get excited while teaching them.
Shade gets cuteness aggression whenever they see Pale and often bites his arm.
Pales love language is touch and Shades is quality time. They're always holding each others hands and standing close to each other.
Had so much gay tension before they started dating 😭😭
They r so in love. When Shade got captured in season 4, Pale started tweaking and almost killed a man trying to find them.
Pale: Are you homophobic?!???!??!!? Why'd you kidnap my boyfriend?!???!!!
Chen: I'm not homophobic, I just hate seeing people happy.
Pale "has to sleep with calming music* Man and Shade "has to sleep with metal music" Shadow.
Chamille, whenever she sees Pale and Shade: My god!!!! These bitches gay !!!!!!! Good for them, good for them !!!!!!!!!!
Shade's the only one who can see Pales appearance (aside from Pale himself) and forgets that fact. They often boast about how pretty Pale is and people have to remind them that literally no one except Shade can see Pale.
Shade: Are you from Mississippi? Cuz you're the only miss whose piss I'd sippi.
Pale: ...I'm from France? (or the Ninjago equivalent of France)
Pale has long hair (like half his back) and Shade is always fidgeting with it.
Matching scents !!!! Pale smells like citrus and Shade smells like flowers.

Make an Example of Them | Umbra, Part I - Kai Mysterious assailants hold the ninja prisoner. Kai becomes the example.
FANDOM: Ninjago Also on AO3
@badthingshappenbingo
<< PREVIOUS || NEXT >>
What was the cliché? ‘It should’ve been a simple mission?’
Kai couldn’t count the number of times they’d gone on a ‘simple mission’ and had it turned into a complicated one. He couldn’t count the number of enemies they’d faced, the godlike beings they’d tangled with, the supernatural shenanigans that had come their way. But for the first time, he started to consider that maybe the ones who would kill him were ordinary humans.
He didn’t know if it was a cult or LARPers, though it very easily could’ve been both. LARPers so good that they easily emulated the skills of any well-trained ninja, clad in black, invisible except for when the light hit them just so. Even the smallest shadow seemed large enough to conceal them, and that had been the crux of the issue when they’d gotten caught. Kai could count the number of ways they might’ve been able to defeat them. Maybe if they’d had forewarning, and maybe if they’d been altogether at once. But instead, the LARPers had taken them down one-by-one. Lloyd first, because he was the heart of their team. Cole next, because he was the strongest. Then Nya, Zane, and Jay. Kai had been last. Fumbling in the dark.
He hadn’t even known that there was trouble until he’d gotten grabbed from behind and dragged into the shadows.
He was thinking about all the ways Master Wu was going to lecture them as he was dragged through what could only be described as a dungeon. The LARPers hadn’t even given him the choice to walk. He was dragged by his ankle, passing underneath scant lights overhead. His captors were only visible when they passed underneath them, and then they disappeared. Like light switches turning on and off.
“Y’know, I got a hot date starting pretty soon,” Kai said loudly. “You better not make me miss it.”
The LARPers didn’t answer him. They hauled him to a cell door and dragged him in.
“Kai!” Nya’s voice cried out.
Kai didn’t get a chance to answer when a shackle clamped around his ankle and all the warmth inside of him suddenly drained out like someone dumping icy water on a campfire. The chill ran all the way up his spine and settled in the base of his skull, throwing him off-centre.
“Ah, the ol’ ‘Chain the Ninja Up With Vengestone’ trick,” said Kai. “Y’know who uses that? Ninjas who didn’t get hugged enough by their mothers.”
One of the LARPers kicked him in the side. It stung, but mostly it just kicked out the strained laugh stuck in his throat.
And just like that, the LARPers were gone, and the chill in the room was more pronounced. Kai sat up, rubbing his now-bruised side. The room was something out of a medieval torture dungeon. The walls were made of chiselled black stone, and the rough, rocky flooring was uncomfortable to sit on. Cole, Lloyd, Jay, and Nya were chained up along the far wall, side-by-side. Their hands were free, but that was fundamentally useless when vengestone was involved. Kai was chained up to a wall further from them, closer to the door.
He resented the distance almost at once. Lloyd was unconscious.
His eyes had yet to adjust to the darkness, but he would recognize the smattering of blood on his face anywhere. Cole had him cradled in his lap. Jay and Nya were held back by their own chains. Instead, they wore their worry plain on their face. He hadn’t seen Nya look as tense as she did in that moment in a long time.
“What happened to Lloyd?” Kai asked.
“What do you think happened?” Jay snapped back. “I said to watch your backs, but no! No one ever listens to me.”
“I was watching my back,” said Cole. “It was my front that they attacked.”
“That’s no better!”
“Guys, will you stop already?” Nya barked. “How’s Lloyd doing?”
Cole pressed two fingers to his neck. “His pulse is steady. He’s clammy, though. It’s fucking freezing in here.”
Kai didn’t even think twice. He shucked off his gi and threw it to Cole. He was wearing only a black tank top underneath.
“What are you doing?” Cole asked.
“Relax, I’m hot-blooded,” said Kai, “and you need to keep him warm. He’s probably in shock.”
“Not with that vengestone you aren’t.”
“Uh, half of Lloyd’s brain is hanging outside his head. I think that takes precedence.”
Jay made a gagging sound. “Don’t word it like that!”
“What? I can practically see the jiggly pink parts.”
Jay gagged again.
“It’s just a fractured skull,” said Cole. “Lloyd’s gonna be fine.”
“Where’s Zane?” Kai asked.
“Not sure,” Nya said. There was a subtle wobble in her face, undetectable to the others, but deafening to Kai. “They took him somewhere else.”
‘Who’s ‘they?’”
“I don’t know, Kai! I didn’t have time to play twenty questions in between them dribbling Lloyd’s head against the ground!”
Kai’s gaze rested on Lloyd as Cole dabbed away at the blood with the gi. Well. It was up to him.
He pulled himself up and yanked on his chain. Even fully extended, it wasn’t long enough to reach Lloyd and the others on the far wall. However, it was just barely long enough to reach the door.
It was a design flaw, for sure, but one he wasn’t going to complain about. The window was small and barred, and enough for him to stick his face right up against it.
The hallway outside was almost in complete darkness, and he saw no one there.
“HEY!” Kai shouted. “HELLO? Get your asses over here! I need to talk to the guy in charge! Or girl. Or somewhere in between. Um, HELLO?!”
“That’s not gonna work, Kai,” said Nya.
Kai ignored her and rattled the bars, but the hallway was silent.
The mass in his stomach felt dense with anxiety.
-
Kai made a nuisance of himself for hours, and when he got tired of yelling and screaming for someone to come, he settled for rattling the bars and just making a general racket. Meanwhile, Lloyd bled and bled and bled and did not wake up, and there was no sign of Zane anywhere.
In between Kai going to the door and shouting for someone to come pay attention to them already, they speculated on who their captors were.
“So, ninja wearing black, who are not serpentine, ghosts, pirates, or jaywalkers,” said Kai, listing off the possibilities on his finger.
“Of course they’re not me,” said Jay. “Do I look like I can clone myself?”
“No, I mean they’re jaywalkers.”
“No, they’re NOT!”
“Haven’t you ever heard the term ‘jaywalker’ before?”
“Yeah, it’s my name!”
“A jaywalker is someone who crosses the street at any place outside of a crosswalk,” Cole said.
“I don’t do that!” Jay protested. “I follow traffic laws!”
“Jay, your stupid is showing.”
“I’ll show you stupid!”
“The point is, that we don’t have the slightest idea who these guys are,” said Nya. “Does that sum it up?”
“Pretty much,” said Cole. “Didn’t recognize the emblem on their gi, but they all have the same one, so I’m guessing they’re part of the same clan or organization or whatever.”
“I hope Master Wu finds us soon so we can ask him,” said Nya.
A metallic click of the lock caused Kai to startle back from the door.
Like ghosts, three of strange ninja entered, their footsteps completely silent. They scanned them all, one-at-a-time.
One pointed at Kai.
“HA!” Kai said, grinning at Nya. “They picked me and not you!”
“I don’t think that’s a good thing, Kai,” said Nya.
“Don’t worry, I’ll sort it out with these guys. You guys just hang out.”
“You think we have a choice?” Cole said.
“Kai, what are you doing?” Nya snapped. “This isn’t funny!”
“You’re right, it’s not. Don’t worry about it. I’ll sort it all out with the big boss.”
“KAI!”
The cell door slammed behind them, but he heard Nya calling for him all the way to the end of the hall.
Kai scanned his two assailants, and wiggled his eyebrows at the girl. He was calculating the moves he’d need to take to incapacitate both of them at the same time. “So…am I getting dinner and a show?”
“Do not resist, or your fellow ninja die,” she said.
“Wow. Dramatic.”
There was barely any time to discuss anything when he was shoved into another room, more open than the cell, and much colder.
Kai realized why it was colder. Zane was restrained on a table.
“Hey, Zane!” Kai said. “How’s it going?”
“It could be going better,” said Zane.
“Are these friends of yours?”
“…I do not know them.”
“Right, right. Any idea who they are? They’re the strong, silent type.”
“I do not.”
“Can’t you do a—”
“Kai!”
THWACK.
The blow hit Kai in the back of his neck and he went down hard.
He didn’t know how long he lay on the cold ground. He felt frozen. The hair up and down his arms stood on end, and Kai realized he was panting heavily into the earth, and it was the only noise he could hear. The pain in his neck was tremendous. He wondered if he’d broken it, so he curled his toes and fingers to make sure he could still move them.
Kai forgot everything. Why he was here. That he was the Red Ninja. There was only profound pain rippling up and down his spine.
“Kai. Do not move. You are injured.”
It was Zane’s voice. It had been a long time since Kai had sound him as afraid as he did.
There was little risk of Kai moving. He couldn’t. He could only lie there, and wonder how he’d ended up there.
He pried open an eye. There was blood dripping down his forehead and into his eye from an injury he couldn’t remember getting, and a set of feet by his head.
“Tell us the codes,” said the owner of the feet. “Or he’s the example.”
Kai looked up, his vision fuzzy. Zane was lying on a table, but he couldn’t remember how he’d come to lie there.
“…I cannot help you,” said Zane.
“You possess the means to access the Ninjago City Police database. Give us the codes.”
“Why do you wish to possess them?”
“Information. Will you comply?”
“That information is sensitive. You could potentially use it to harm others.”
“Potentially. Yet there are five other ninja aside from yourself here. Five ninja that we can set an example with.”
Kai heard the words, he was wearing them, they were going into his head, but he couldn’t understand them despite his best efforts. The best he could do was to try to tell Zane he was okay.
“Zane,” Kai droned out. Zane looked at him with a haunted stare.
“…I…cannot,” said Zane. “Torture me if you must, but leave him alone.”
“This is not a negotiation,” Kai’s attacker replied.
“Wait, no! I will tell you.”
“You had your chance. Now you learn the consequences.”
------
Down the hall, Nya leaned back against the wall, eyes closed, trying to think calm thoughts. Kai was strong. Stronger than all of them combined. He was going to be fine, and soon, Master Wu would show up and get them out of their problems.
She felt so certain that he was going to swoop in, that when Kai screamed, Nya almost screamed herself. Her hands flew over her ears, and she looked around at the others, and they all looked, horrified, back at her and at each other and at the door like Kai’s face would show up in the window to say ‘Psych! Got you all!’
Kai had never screamed like that before.
It was one, long terrible scream. And then it was quiet.
A ripping sensation tore apart Nya’s chest. She fumbled for Jay’s hand and crushed his fingers. Jay held back, large eyes terrified and shining in the darkness, and she hoped against hope that Kai had stopped screaming because he’d passed out, and not because he was no longer alive.

Ok, as promised, this is the first... part? chapter? whatever - of my rewrite of Day of the Departed. I'm sure there've been a million rewrites and fanfics of this one special - I haven't actually checked on AO3 - but who's to say I can't do my own take?
It starts off pretty slow, but this is what I'm trying to do with this rewrite:
Make it darker & more psychological/angsty - focus on Cole's existential terror at being forgotten
Still stick to the original script wherever it feels natural
Add in new scenes to flesh out some parts more
Change up the ending (how? not telling just yet)
So here we go with the first part, and if I get into the mood well enough we might even get a second!
The stillness of the night was first shaken by a rabbit tearing through the grass, then shattered as a small herd of deer crashed through the undergrowth. These were not nocturnal creatures, nor was it wise for those who were at the bottom of the food chain to be anything other than silent. Yet here they were, wide awake, whining, and very nervous, their gazes darting about fearfully.
Elsewhere in the forest, a lone wolf stopped to sniff the air, but he was not hunting. He came to a clearing and shrank back, his ears flattened against his head, his teeth bared in a snarl at an invisible enemy. He lifted his head to the moon, and his growling intensified.
The moon shone down in its serene fullness, isolated from the unease below. A wisp of green drifted across its pale face and dissipated. The white radiance of the moon seemed to intensify for an instant, and then its edges began to take on a green tinge.
Below, the wolf howled, then turned tail and fled in terror back into the safety of the darkness, away from the increasingly unnatural glow of the moon.

The alert came as the Ninja were about to head out. The Mechanic had attempted a breakout at Kryptarium Prison, and Warden Noble had sent the distress call.
Jay groaned. “Not now, not today! Who knows how long this’ll take?”
“I bet the Mechanic did this on purpose,” added Cole grumpily. The Earth Ninja was normally not one to anger quickly, but his fuse had gotten shorter ever since he was turned into a ghost. “Picking a holiday of all days for his shenanigans.” He punched his translucent fists together in frustration. “I’ve got half a mind to just ignore him. We have other things that need our attention.”
But Kai was already talking over him. “Lloyd, it’s a holiday. We have things we wanna do. Do we all really have to go? Can’t just one or two of us maybe, oh I don’t know, just go put the Mechanic back in his cell while the others get on with what we were doing?”
“But Kai, our task will require minimal manpower to complete. I estimate that we will only need -” Zane began, before Kai shushed him.
“We don’t know how bad things are over at Kryptarium, so we’d better have all hands on deck. Our business will have to wait,” Lloyd decided. He turned to Master Wu. “I promise we’ll be back in time.”
Master Wu nodded. “Be careful.”
The six Ninja raced out of the monastery, leaving Wu to gaze after them. He had never admitted it, and probably never would, but every single time they left on a mission, he worried that it was the last time he would ever see them. All it would take was one wrong move - one small mistake. He was painfully aware that as the one who had gathered them and trained them, he was the reason why their lives were constantly on the line, and the responsibility weighed heavily on his heart. But, he told himself, they had learned well. Each of them, alone, was perfectly capable of holding their own; as a team, they were by all measures a force to be reckoned with. As long as they stayed together, they would be all right.
He raised his face to the midday sun, squinting against the harsh glare. Soon, it would begin its descent, but for now, it blazed high above Ninjago, its reign unchallenged by cloud nor shadow. The air in the monastery hung almost unnaturally still. Wu let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
For now, there was nothing that could be done but to wait.
*****
Jay whooped as his jet did a barrel roll above the other ninjas’ vehicles racing over the Sea of Sand. “Look out, kids!” his voice crackled over the communication link. “Jay is here to save the day!”
“Yeah, and what are we, chopped liver?” Kai groused.
“Jay’s just excited he managed to get the Supersonic Raider Jet,” Nya said, amusement in her voice.
“Yeah, I still don’t understand how you got that, Jay,” Lloyd said in mock jealousy.
“Uh, because I called dibs,” Jay sniffed. “Guy who calls dibs first gets it, right, Cole? …”
No response. “Cole?”
Cole’s Rock Roader was trailing slightly behind the others, and he had been unusually quiet as he focused on maintaining a solid grip on the steering. But now, his hands were beginning to slip through the controls.
“No. No,” he breathed shakily. “Come back. Come… No.” He struggled to maintain his grip, his hands clutching thin air as he fought back rising terror. His vehicle began to veer off course.
“Cole! He’s drifting off again!” Nya shouted.
“I’ll get him,” Jay responded as he turned his jet around. At that moment, the Rock Roader mounted a sand dune and launched itself into the air, narrowly missing Jay.
“Cole! Look out!!” Jay yelled.
Cole grunted as his vehicle landed. His body solidified momentarily, and he slammed on the brakes. The Rock Roader fishtailed to a stop.
“S-sorry, Jay,” Cole’s voice sounded shakily over the communicator. “I -”
“Whew, buddy, I know you're a ghost, but I'm still in the living world, and I'd kinda like to keep it that way,” Jay quipped. He tried to keep his tone lighthearted, but he still regretted his words the moment they left his lips. That had gotta hurt. Something was off with his best friend, but he wasn’t sure what.
“Heads up,” Lloyd said then. “There’s something out there.”
A blurred form was speeding on the horizon - something that looked like an oddly-shaped car.
“It’s the Mechanic,” Zane reported, his eyes digitally magnifying his view. “And he’s in some sort of getaway vehicle heading northeast. He’s going fast.”
“Where did he get that in prison?” Kai exclaimed.
“That’s not important,” Lloyd said impatiently. “Right now, we need to stop him. Jay, we’ll need the boost from your jet. Kai, Nya, with me.”
“I’ll keep him in our sights,” Zane said, already pulling ahead.
“Right! Cole…?”
“I… I think I’ll sit this one out,” came Cole’s subdued response.
“Roger that,” Lloyd said. “Ninja, fire all engines.”
The combined power of their engines gave them a speed boost that none of their vehicles could have achieved alone, and they rapidly caught up to the fleeing Mechanic. It was a short fight; the Mechanic was alone, and his getaway vehicle turned out to be a truck slapped together from mismatched parts and modified for speed. He was pushing it to its limit, so that by the time they reached him it was already beginning to sputter. Without his usual mechanical backup, the professional criminal was outnumbered by the Ninja and quickly overpowered.
“Not one of your best plans, Mechanic,” Kai noted as they waited to hand him over to the authorities. “What possessed you to try breaking out of prison without getting some backup first?”
“Har de har har,” the Mechanic scowled. “It’s the Day of the Departed. I figured everyone would be distracted by the festivities. Guess you ninja just have no respect for the departed.”
“It’s because of you that we were pulled away from our preparations,” Nya shot back, annoyed. “How’d you even break out, anyway?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” sneered the Mechanic.
“Save it, Nya,” Lloyd said. “Here comes Warden Noble.”
The warden ambled over as they loaded the recaptured criminal into the back of a police vehicle. “Thank you for coming over on such short notice,” he said. “We’re short-staffed today because of the holiday, so we needed to call for backup. You could say we’re working with a… skeleton crew.” He guffawed at his own joke. The ninja chuckled politely.
“I hope things go smoothly for the rest of the day,” Lloyd said. “And that you and your team get some time to celebrate the holiday yourselves.”
Noble’s face sobered. “And you as well, young ninja. It’s an important tradition to honor those who have left us.”
“Don’t forget the candy!” Jay interjected, rubbing his hands in anticipation. “Best part of the holiday!”
“Yes, well, we need to go, Warden. Thank you.” Lloyd bowed, and the Ninja turned to leave.
With the waving warden in their rearview mirrors, Nya let out a sigh of frustration. “That took a whole chunk of our afternoon. We’re gonna be late if we don’t hurry.”
“Then we’d better hurry,” Lloyd answered with a sly smirk. “Ninja, fire all engines! … Again.”
Their vehicles shot forward into the desert, leaving a cloud of dust to settle gently behind them. It all but obscured the black Rock Roader, slowly trailing behind the others, as if its driver didn’t trust himself not to lose control of the car - and his own form - again.

You know she really started out as a self insert and turned into an OC yet I don't talk about her enough
So anyways here's some info of hers down below
Name: Katherina Tanith Erebus-Lane Nicknames: Kathy, Rina Age: 17 Gender: Female Race: Human/?? Appearance: She has tan skin with long black hair and indigo eyes that she inherited from her father.
Height: 5'6" Weight: 130 lbs. Hair style: Ponytail (season one to seven) / Edgy bob (season 8-present) Hair Color: Black Eye Color: Prussian/Regal Blue (Hex Code: #00416A) Skin Tone: Cameo (#CCA289)
Weapon of choice: Mother's katana and Father's sabre. Varies most of the time. Element: Darkness Manipulation Abilities:
Shadow Generation -The power to generate shadows and darkness. (inspired by Lord Garmadon during the pilot episodes. We should really extend the use of that or give reason why he gave that up. Shade is capable of this as well but it was only ever in the mobile game.)
Shadow Camouflage - The power to become invisible while in shadows. (inspiration: Shade and the Shinobi from Samurai Jack)
Umbrakinetic Combat - The power to fuse manipulation of darkness with physical combat to create a devastating form of martial arts. (As it says on the tin)
Umbrakinetic Constructs - The ability to create objects and other constructs out of darkness. (Why her weapon choice varies. It is unknown if she could create entire structures or environments yet)
Personality: At first, she is standoffish, but getting to know her, you learn that she's been through a lot before encountering the Ninja and becoming one of the Kunoichi. She's tough but kind, known to be analytical but fun. Call her genre-savvy if you will. Occupation: Kunoichi Affiliations: The Ninja (currently), Serpentine Rebellion — through Vasuki (currently), Dragon Samurai — through her mother and "aunts" (currently), Elemental Masters (off and on) Hometown: (Spoilers)
Status: Alive Bio: Katherina here is the daughter of the previous Master of Darkness, Luther, and Clarissa, Lady Azure of the Dragon Samurai. She is their fourth child after their eldest, Xander and their twin girls, Mariana and Veronica. She lived in a city far away from the world of Ninjago with her parents having left that world behind in order to not let their young get involved with any fantastical affairs of the like. However they couldn't escape the world of fantasy after all. Katherina was open to the world and she grew up in it. One day, during one of her adventures while she was a teen, she had lost her brother due to a blast of magic and it would be sometime after the event of her loss that she would be framed for something she didn't do, due to her powers waking up after so long, and her grandparents on her mother's side had given her a way to get out of trouble. Unfortunately this would lead her back to Ninjago where she was needed the most. With her panicking and her powers sometimes lashing out with her not being taught to use them right, she was eventually found by Wu and the team of Ninja with their most recent addition, Sam, their wind kunoichi. It took Lord Garmadon to sift through the Darkness to reach Katherina. (Recalling how Leila, the former Master of Shadow had done the same for Luther, their old "friend".) Kathy would eventually be taught her powers correctly (more like without accidentally leaving a door open to Overlord, but she doesn't know that yet) and she joined the fight against the Serpentine. However, it was one night on her own that she would meet a Serpentine Hybrid who, for some reason, she felt a strong connection to and felt the need to hear him out and help him in their endeavor to take down Pythor and his followers.
Relationships:
Luther and Clarissa: Her parents. They are semi-strict types and protective of her and her siblings. The protectiveness definitely shows when they find out she's with Wu, someone they tried so hard to avoid yet somehow got circled back to. Xander: Her older brother who she looked up to. The two of them went on their own adventures through the city they lived in, encountering so much and experiencing more than their fair share together until that incident happened. Mariana and Veronica: The older twin girls. For the most part, they were cordial with her like some siblings are. They were actually studying magic and sometimes Kathy would join, trying to hang out with them and sometimes being shot down, but not maliciously. When Xander died however, their demeanor to her changed, shutting her out nearly completely until she herself disappeared one day. Samantha: A kunoichi of wind who became her friend. Vasuki: He is a Hypnobrai-Anacondrai hybrid she had followed, mistaking him for one of Pythor's followers. After hearing him out and being led to the border of their encampment, the Ninja had mistaken her for being kidnapped but they find out it's not the case. Events come to pass, and Kathy and Vasuki are inseparable to the point of when she was done helping rebuild the City of Ouroboros after the Battle of the Devourer, he ended up following her and eventually becoming her partner.
Fun Facts:
Originally, she was a self insert in an RP years ago back on DeviantArt. That was until I gave her a different name and watched other material that would make up her backstory. If you've seen my old DeviantArt journals, you'd know what I had laid out for her. However the story did change quite a bit.
She didn't actually have an official ninja suit design that wasn't customized to her. The most I ever got was her color. Now her suit is based off of several things. There's the unused Leonardo concept, Karai's armor, and that one Ninja costume from this site. That's basically the three main things that helped.
The names her family members, notably her father and brother, are called aren't their real names but by middle names.
She is a middle child. However, her younger sibling Tsukiko would have been born around the time she became a teen, aka the time her powers were presenting itself, so she didn't get much time to get to know her.
There is a reason Vasuki and Katherina already feel so familiar with each other around their first meeting. Of course, that is spoiler related and only one other person knows about it.
She only has so few abilities because her father is keeping the other half of the Element of Darkness so she cannot reach true potential until after he gives it up. (He does not give it up willingly, of course. Especially after he's learned that using too much of the Darkness Element would lead Overlord to an open door. He doesn't want that for her.)
She will get an appearance in another fic. The current Ninjago fic I'm writing is another OC, one by a friend, and I still love her so.
I was going to give her the Romanian version of her name, Catalina, but the more I thought about it, I realized she didn't really look like a Catalina, not even a Catina. Maybe if she were vastly different, I would do so but Katherina had been stuck to her for so long that it feels wrong to give her another name.

The Forces Of Destiny — Part IV :
"Sucked in"
- a fanmade ninjago season -
Tumblr media
Word count: 1847
Warnings: none
Tumblr media
The ninja entered Yuki’s office, pushing open the heavy mahogany door, their eyes immediately settled on the elaborate tapestry hanging on the northern wall. Intricate designs adorned the fabric, threads of history woven into it, the Dragonfly family symbol depicted above the mystic figure.
Yuki moved forward, gripping the fabric as she tugged on it, she turned her head towards Cole in a silent plea of help. Understanding, Cole approached the fabric, muscles flexing as she peeled the fabric away revealing the plain limestone brick wall. Confusion settled upon the ninja’s faces as they stared at the plain wall.
“Oh come on! Why does every ancient being have to speak in riddles? Why couldn't she just tell us the way to the Royal Archives normally.” Jay quaked, allowing his head to fall down as his shoulders slumped.
Nya moved past her boyfriend, closely examining the wall, running her fingers over the bumpy surface. “Maybe there's a hidden mechanism. Some sort of switch or a leaver.”
Lloyd joined her, knowing on the wall, listening intently for any hollow sound. “Maybe it's activated by a sound,” he thought out loud. “But then what sound could it be.” he finished his thought, bringing his hand to his chin thoughtfully.
“I'm starting to think this was all just a stupid trick.” Kai grunted, hitting his fist on the wall in frustration. “How are we supposed to solve a puzzle with no clues.”
Zane stood back with Yuki, observing the room with a calculated gaze. “Perhaps we need to think of the room as a whole, rather than just the northern wall itself.” Zane remarked, causing Yuki to sigh.
Yuki felt a growing sense of hopelessness overcome her, the determination in her eyes now replaced with deep-seated doubt. Her shoulders slumped, the room once filled with the possibility of hidden truths now seemed to mock her inability to find its secrets.
Despite the palace's regal splendour, at that moment it felt more like a dungeon of self-doubt. Her self disappointment only amplified as the realisation struck, leaving a bitter taste on her tongue - she couldn’t even find a place within her own home.
How can you be this useless?
With every unsuccessful attempt to solve the riddle, her inner turmoil heightened. Doubt whispered in her mind, questioning her capabilities and worthiness, the grandeur of her royal status seemed to be crushed.
Useless.
Useless.
Useless.
She watched the team persist in their efforts, their voices fading away into white noise as she looked outside the vast window. The moon, a silent companion, witnessed their efforts as it began to ascend over the horizon. The silvery glow melted through the window as it cast an ethereal radiance over the office, bathing the room in a celestial luminescence. Yuki glanced at the captivating display of light, watching the light dance with the shadows across the floor. Momentarily, a small flash of light seemed to reflect off the wall as the moon rose higher into the sky. A subtle sparkle, a gentle glimmer, almost invisible.
She narrowed her eyes as she spoke “ Everyone, move back.” her voice holding an unusual authority, one she reserved for parliament and official state gatherings. The ninja watched as she moved towards the wall, not daring to step in. Below the sparkle, the moonlight revealed the minute engraving on the wall.
“Only the light and the wand may open the door, for the moon is the one at the magics core.” she whispered, her fingers tracing the words.
A determined spark ignited itself within Yuki. Her friends watched intently as she retrieved her wand, an ancient heirloom passed down all the way from Queen Kaida, its significance in Kaida’s speech now falling into place. She held the wand up high, positioning the wand at a precise angle, allowing the crystal within her wand to reflect the moonlight just right. She aligned the moonlight with the place she saw shimmering on the wall, within seconds the place began to shine brightly, the engraving below illuminating with silver light; the lines flickered with ethereal brilliance as the room, once filled with uncertainty, now watched the enchanted transformation in front of them.
A low hum resonated throughout the room, everyone watched as the secret passageway revealed itself from the wall. The wall seemed to tear itself open, waking up from a long slumber as it groaned and twisted to reveal a primal staircase. A soft breeze filled the room, as if ancient secrets swept through the air.
The ninja started in astonishment, a sense of accomplishments and pride filling them. Yuki turned to Jay “Huh, maybe you were right Jay, turns out there is a secret chamber.” she teased, smiling sweetly to her friends.
Morro smirked, placing his hand on her shoulder “Atta girl.”
He moved forward, grabbing the ornate candle holder from Yuki’s desk, taking the lead down the twisted stairs. The rest of the team followed closely behind, the once concealed door sealing itself shut again.
They descended down the narrow, twisted staircase, their way illuminated by Morro’s candle and Yuki’s wand. The air grew colder with each step down, a slight fragrance of dust hanging in the atmosphere, the steep stairs seemed to wind endlessly into the cold abyss below.
The unknown stretched out in front of them, time felt suspended as they moved with purpose, a faint sound echoed through the passage. It was as if distant whispers of long forgotten voices spoke to them.
At last the ninja stood in front of a grand set of doors lined with ancient writings, their gazes travelled higher, taking in the entire entrance.
Yuki placed a gentle hand on one of the doors, she felt the magic surge within her, shocking through every vein in her body. A force opened her eyes, they shone a bright white as she pushed open the door, feeling the magic move faster in her. Her friends stood beside her in mild shock, of course they witnessed similar situations throughout their friendship, yet it still caused them to freeze every time.
They entered the expansive room, a sea of tables stretching across the entire room, covered in never ending parchment. The air was thick with magical ambiance as history seemed to write itself.
The team moved closer to one of the tables, watching as enchanted quills gracefully danced on the parchment, leaving intricate tales of the past on the pages. They marvelled at the mesmerising spectacle as they noticed a specific sentence be written in front of their eyes.
“The elemental masters of Magic, Energy, Water, Wind, Fire, Ice and Lightning enter the royal archives for the first time. They observe as history is written.” Zane reads out loud, turning to face the group, watching as chills run down everyone's spines.
“Uhhh that's freaky, let's keep moving.” Jay says, pushing the group along, clearly uncomfortable at the thought of his every action being recorded.
“This place must be enchanted by some spell, these quills are writing down the entire chronological unfolding history of Ninjago.” Yuki gasps, amazed by the magical powers present in the room.
“Let’s spread out, it seems like everything is organised chronologically.” Kai ordered, the rest of the team nodded simultaniasly.
They dispersed, desperate hands combing through the papers. Lloyd, guided by some intuitive force, approached a section; he swept all scrolls onto the ground, letting them hit the floor without any regard for the tender aged parchment.
Yuki turned her head at the sound of the falling paper, immediately scolding the blonde. “Careful Lloyd! Those might be important!”
“There's something here, i can feel it-” he searched further, finally finding the wall behind the shelf, ancient symbols etched into it “There! Over here!” he called, drawing everyone’s attention. Yuki approached closer, taking her place beside him as she traced her fingers over the symbols.
“It’s about my spellbook.” Her voice trailed off.
“Well what does it say!” Cole asked excitedly, urging Yuki to keep reading.
“It just says,” She squinted her eyes in the dim light “ The spell book keeps the master's memories as an extension. She who holds it in her embrace wields the record of the family's timeless grace. Known and unknown secrets are held, even those forbidden from being told.” she finished, an uncanny feeling taking over her.
“Yuki, your spell book!” Nya pointed to the spellbook tucked under Yuki’s arm, her eyes wide with realisation. “What if the answer is in the subtext of the book!” she rejoiced.
Suddenly, Yuki felt another surge of magic flow through her body, the pages of the spell book began to glow with a bright ethereal light, pulsating at the same rate as Yuki’s heartbeat.
The ninja watched in awe as light filled the room, the radiant glow intensifying with each second, bathing them in an otherworldly luminescence. Everyone exchanged puzzled looks, confusion and uncertainty etched in their eyes.
The spell book lifted off out of Yuki’s hands, astonished gasps filled the room as the pages fluttered vigorously. Yuki held her breath, eyes wide and mouth agape, this was not a chapter in her magical training.
“I'm not the Master of Magic, but I'm pretty sure a book isn’t supposed to be doing that.” Jay stated, his finger pointing at the book defying gravity.
“Yeah no shit sherlock” Kai responded, stepping back from the book.
Before anyone could think of reacting, a powerful vortex enveloped the ninja, the room blurred into a kaleidoscope of colours as an odd sense of weightlessness overcame their senses. It was as if they were being transported through the very fabric of reality.
Abruptly, they were deposited into a pile in the familiar space of Yuki’s bedroom. The sudden transition was disorienting, the group of friends untangled themselves, silently blinking in surprise. They looked around in bewilderment, exchanging slightly amused glances, the room erupted with laughter.
Everyone laughed at the unforeseen enchantment of the spell book, everyone but Yuki. An unusual silence fell like a heavy curtain, her purple eyes darting around her bedroom as her friends turned to her, their amusement quickly turning to concern, suddenly feeling uncomfortable in the seemingly familiar room.
What is this?
“This isn’t right.” Yuki mumbled, her voice carrying a sense of urgency that sent shivers down everyone's spines.
“Yuki, this is all just some weird magic. Right?” Lloyd spoke cautiously, his eyes narrowed slightly. “You’ve teleported before.”
Panic flashed across her face, she stood up abruptly, running to her bedroom window, the sunlight softly steaming in, painting warm shadows on her face.
Calm down.
The ninja watched her, a sudden realisation hit them like a bolt of Jay's lightning.
“It was evening just minutes ago…” Yuki gulped, a sense of uncanny valley settled over them.
“ Something’s off, I can't put my finger on it but something doesn’t feel right about your bedroom.” Kai added, scrutinising the room.
“That's because we're not in my bedroom.” Yuki started. She turned her head halfway away from the window just enough to face her friends as she continued “We’re in the memory of my bedroom.”

Remember Shade and Paleman ? I know they barely interact in the series and they have almost no writing but I want them to be friends. Like, their elements are opposites but also complementary! Here is some ideas I got for them:
- Shade got his shadow powers from his mother. She is caring but strict, and Shade was often in conflict with her.
- Paleman got his light powers by chance. He is a distant cousin of the former master of light who died without a descendant.
- Shade used to hide his real personality by playing a "dark, cold and strong" character. It didn't worked well and his exaggerated play just made the others laugh.
- Paleman robbed a bank once, using his powers to make his face invisible. He stayed invisible after this to avoid the robbery being linked to his real identity. So the police locked him up like this without asking for his name.
- Shade's whole body appears in shades of grey because of his powers.
- Paleman is a graffiti artist and he continues staying anonymous for this activity, just like Banksy.
- Shade and Paleman can combine their powers to create illusions.
- They lived in Ninjago City until the events of the beginning of Crystalized. Then they were gone for a few weeks to travel and seeing their families, joking about the city being destroyed again.
Does this pair already have a name ? If not, I'd suggest Contrast X)

oooh okay!! my favorite ninjago song is OBVSLY the pirate whip. like that one is a straight up banger. i love s6 too so im biased but i literally NEVER skip the s6 intro. 2nd fav is the hunter intro even tho it's not a weekend whip remix it is just so cool.
now i could go ahead and say light is my fav elemental power just because that was my main oc's, but considering the only REAL ability that we've seen paleman use is invisibility, i'll pick smth else. i rly like form!! shapeshifting is always rly fun to play around with and GOD i love chamille. shadow is also awesome.
my first ship was bruise and then i became a jay/cole/kai shipper (idk their combined ship name). but even tho i LOVE them, i think jetmetal and darkthinking are SOOOO. they're so. my butch lesbians and my nerdy gays. i think ill have to go w jetmetal.
fav hc... honestly idk, i dont rly have any!! i was always too busy writing long au fics to think about the actual characters lol. i think jay is obsessed w undertale. he finally convinced cole to play it after months and thought he was gonna struggle with the nightmare flowey fight but cole did it in one try and jay was rly sour about it. more general ones... obvsly cole is gay, kai is pan, jay is bi. OH ZANE IS GENDER APATHETIC N ASEXUAL. can you imagine jay making a sex joke and zane just stares at him confused and jay is hit by a train realizing that he may have to explain the concept of sex to them?

golden power; never wielded
my first work for @ninjago-angst-week! prompt - abandoned (16/08) Lloyd's never known what it's like to share his heart with another, linking two lives together as if one had found the melody to their chorus, now a song in perfect harmony. If he’d always felt like he was invisible; wondered if there was something fundamentally wrong with his inability to touch others’ hearts, then, well, that was no one’s business but his own. Of course, that was before he quite literally fell for someone - the first person, actually - who seemed to care. Of course she was too good to be true. Or, the S8 angst I've been wanting to write about 'game of masks' and the aftermath. trigger warnings - suicidal thoughts, brief mention of implied self-harm, not really a warning but it talks a lot about loneliness. "How did you know?"
"It's an Oni Temple. It's safe to assume that only an Oni could take it."
"No. How could you know that I was part Oni?"
How could you know that I was part Oni?
The question repeated itself in his mind, echoing into the blizzard.
Sometimes, he wondered what would've gone down at the temple if he hadn't been so observant.
Well, he thought bitterly, probably not the temple itself.
The walls collapsing, he'd caught a glimpse of his terrified face as the room filled with swirling inky blackness, freezing him to the bone.
But the real pain came from her words.
Ah. Your emotions. You can't get rid of them, can you?
No, he'd wanted to yell, staring listlessly at the shaking grey semblance of sky.
He'd always felt like he wielded the element of light; invisible, trapped behind a barrier that no one cared enough to break. Isolated; locked away from the world. Longing for - yearning for - a single soul to want to know his heart. Pain that almost felt tangible, bleeding into every motion, every day.
Everyone else seemed to find it so easy - so effortless - simple as breathing, taken for granted like it was ingrained into their bones. Everyone else seemed to have given away a little piece of their heart - to their parents, friends, or lovers.
The fact that his was, and had always been, entirely whole?
He was either cursed, the venom from the Great Devourer passed down to him, or there was something fundamentally unlikable coursing through his veins.
By this point, he assumed it was the latter.
Maybe, if anyone had ever cared - wanted to know him - he'd never have felt like it was pressing down on his chest like a casket; a useless block of ice that no one wanted, not even the unfortunate owner it'd been given.
If no one would know his heart, he'd thought, grabbing a forgotten map, he'd strike fear into theirs - until they knew what it was like to sob into invisible barriers, to gaze upon the world with a weary eyes and a heart heavy with the knowledge that if they vanished, no one would even notice.
He'd realized far too late that he had unleashed an evil that couldn't be controlled - or one that could only be controlled by his- by someone else that had sunk beneath the darkness until no light remained-
He'd escaped from the crumbling casket, energy and eyes blazing - only to find that Har- she'd already escaped with the mask.
The Oni Mask of Hatred.
As they had steered the boat through the river, her sweet smile hiding lie upon lie, he'd thought it was somewhat ironic - two lovers, seeking a literal manifestation of hatred.
He'd laughed bitterly; no mirth in the sound.
After his first crush had - well, literally tried to crush him, he didn't think that this day could get much worse.
Until she dropped him into a contraption that was the stuff of nightmares - leaving the others with a seemingly impossible choice.
He'd wanted to yell, scream, that they should save his mother - he'd hurt enough people over the course of his short life, as evidenced by the grief-stricken orphan yelling a foreign language right in front of him.
I'm the expendable one! Maybe she was right - it was my fault the Serpentine were able to release the Great Devourer. And it took thousands of lives - but never the life of the one who was to blame.
He'd grabbed the vengestone bars, the faint sense of numbness they brought a welcoming relief from the storm of emotions that- he honestly had no clue what to do with.
i could drown, he had thought briefly, fleetingly. what if i drowned and i never hurt anyone again-
you have  a responsibility, even though you've pretty much failed to uphold it so far
"Clotho venge! Clotho decer! Clotho haeed!"
Shoving the thought to the back of his mind, he'd gripped the bars tighter, ignoring the sting of the metal against skin.
If anything, he'd welcomed the sting.
Any pain was better than the agonizing reminder that his heart was, and had always been, entirely whole.
He didn't even realize he was trembling until he heard his father's voice echoing from the vortex.
His father hadn't asked to be bitten by an evil snake, the venom coursing through his veins for years upon years. He hadn't asked to be dumped at a boarding school for bad kids, spending what he had left of his childhood hiding in empty classrooms or yelling empty threats as his classmates snickered.
Against all odds, they'd been reunited. Evil snakes, Fangblades, even Jade Blades - none of it had stood between them.
Just when he thought they might have a future - he might have a- a family - the Cursed Realm decided to curse them all.
His father with imprisonment, him with a life devoid of a father he'd loved, at the end.
Now H- she wanted to resurrect him?
His father had been so much more than the Oni blood in his veins. So was he.
But if he was completely Oni-
Lloyd didn't like their odds. He kind of hated them.
"Clotho venge! Clotho decer! Clotho haeed!"
---
A few chaotic hours later... they'd won? They'd won.
The Sons of Garmadon (he'd always thought the name was kind of ironic - he, the only son of Garmadon, wasn't in their crazy biker gang) had been imprisoned by courageous, if a bit overzealous, taser-wielding policeman.
Ninjago was celebrating - everyone was; he should be, too.
Should he really revel in their victory, though? It was his fault that she'd been able to snatch the last mask, all the safeguards the Oni had put in place practically worthless because of his stupid feelings-
H- Harumi had been thrown in one of the police vans.
"You're right - this isn't me," she'd started, her meekness almost convincing him that she really was the girl he'd fallen for - the girl who'd been forced into a mask she never wanted to wear, but someone who still cared about the world... and- and about him.
"Stop."
He'd cut her off, the venom in his tone surprising both of them.
"Save it for someone who cares," he'd forced out, the hurt welling up his chest almost as painful as their unceremonious descent into the jungle, (the descent she'd orchestrated, he'd thought fleetingly, squeezing his eyes together) unable to believe that this- this liar was the same sweet girl he'd fallen for.
With that, he slammed the door of the van, locking her in - wishing that locking his memories away could be easy.
She'd never cared about him; simply needing to use him as if he was nothing more than the power he wielded.
He watched one of the policemen drive her away, the tired-but-enthusiastic cheers of his teammates nothing more than background noise; static.
Vaguely, he realized that his heart wasn't quite whole - he'd given a piece of it to someone whom he had thought would link theirs together in harmony, the melody to his chorus; what he'd been searching for ever since he'd woken up screaming in a 'boarding school' that seemed more like a prison.
She'd taken more than what he'd given - draining the light from his entire being as if she was the Overlord, stealing his golden power without a shred of remorse.
That failure was practically painless, compared to her-
An almost unfamiliar emotion slowly stated to replace the ache in his chest that he'd grown used to for all those years; it'd become comforting, even. Watching the world go by with a heart that seemed more like a curse, he briefly, fleetingly, wondered if he'd be better off without one.
If there was ever a problem that presented itself to Nya while she worked on the Bounty, she used to joke that it'd be easier to just dump their entire hard dive into the sea.
Destruction seemed to be easier than fixing, he conceded - the van now just a glimmer of bright light; one of the many that made up their vibrant city.
"How did you know?" he heard, yet again wondering how he felt so disconnected from his own role in the memory.
How had she known?
The whisper of a voice long gone bled into his consciousness, his hands shaking at his sides even as the city celebrated.
Why had he even asked that?
Plastering a smile on his face as he walked over to his teammates, the question repeating itself in his mind, echoing into the blizzard.
FSM - she didn't need to be leader of a biker gang to know that.
Who could ever give their heart - the epitome of human connection; golden power all on its own, albeit of a different kind - to an Oni?
Maybe he wasn't the one trapped behind an invisible wall, built on tears and loneliness and yearning and heartache and a lone question - why? Why could no one seem to look past the cage he felt himself trapped in, observing the world rather than playing a part in it.
He hadn't been a- abandoned by everyone, he realized, a weary sense of clarity and shadowed eyes not sure to accept it or push it into the back of his mind like the hours he'd spent there, as if he'd ever want to have hurt his teammates like he did, the twisted ghost-
He trailed behind his teammates as they sang - horribly off key, his mind pointed out, forcing a small smile onto his face - lost in the figurative blizzard, despite the fact that the sun's rays had only vanished a few hours ago.
If no one would know his heart?
FSM - could he really blame them?
(if you read this far, thank you so much, you’ve made my day:D)

The Serpentine War Ch. 7
Chapter 7: The Alliance
It was going so well until the giant snake showed up.
The Anacondrai were on them in an instant. Maya’s raised shield met an Anacondrai sword with a clash! Ray tried to summon his fire again, but it didn’t respond. Only his instincts saved him from getting skewered. The loss of his katana crept back in, cold and fearful.
Then a battle cry erupted from behind. Ray chanced a look over his shoulder. There they were at last, the village defenders. Red masks were pulled over their noses, reminiscent of the ninja of days long past. Despite their disorganization and haphazard collection of old swords and spears, they never slowed.
The villagers crashed into a wave of violet. Metal clanged. Anacondrai roared. Ray found himself trapped in the middle. He tried to find an opening in the chaos, but he couldn’t shoot fire without hurting one of his own.
In his desperation, he thought he might have cried, “Maya!” Whether in his mind or out loud, the crashing of the battle drowned it out.
Then world slowed. A single Anacondrai sword cleaved the air over Ray’s head. He raised a hand, uncertain if fire would follow.
But the sword never dropped. Instead, as if yanked by an invisible rope, it flew straight up and soared away. The snake it belonged to was pulled along behind it. A cluster of Serpentine rose into the air and dropped again in a jumble.
Ray stared. “What the…”
Something swooped overhead; Ray ducked instinctively. He snapped back up, ready to fight, but it was no snake, no trick of the Serpentine. It was a man in a golden helmet, hovering in the air.
Lei’s wild laugh escaped the ruckus. She stepped out of the shadows to shake her fist at the flying man. “Dojin, you cut it close!”
“And you - behind you!” the man called back.
Lei spun to face a blue Serpentine and disappeared into the battle.
The Anacondrai ranks were reforming from Dojin’s attack. Before the nearest could rise, Ray shoved forward and slammed his boot into the warrior’s snout. He swiped up the Anacondrai’s fallen sword.
Woah. Ray allowed himself a millisecond to admire the craftsmanship of the weapon, even if he had no idea what it was made of. Each serrated edge had been formed with individual precision, needle-sharp and not at all brittle.
Maya appeared at Ray’s side again - she’d lost the shield, but she seemed alright. Many of the villagers lined up behind the two of them. Ray swung the sword in a wide berth to fend off the approaching Anacondrai. They were not frightened. Before he had the chance to defend again, they rushed forward.
Above, Master Dojin dove in again. He skimmed the top of the Ancondrai, swerving between their swords. He clawed at their snaky heads, pulled some off the ground with his strange power, and basically wreaked havoc. Ray’s hope spiked. They might actually have a chance. Together, they could win this!
Stupid giant snake.
The ground began to tremble. At first, Ray thought it was Serpentine reinforcements. And in a way it was. But it was worse than Anacondrai.
It curled around from the side of the mountain, crushing a section of village wall. A giant snake. A real snake, not a Serpentine. Its mighty maw opened larger than Ray’s whole body. Purple scales, darker than the Anacondrai’s, swept through the snow and rubble.
It reared its head in an “S” behind the floating Dojin, who was busy surveying the battle.
“Dojin!” Lei’s voice cried from somewhere unseen.
The man spun just in time for the serpent’s giant fang to pierce his shoulder.
Dojin did not scream. When the snake released him, he simply dropped from the sky and landed in a heap at the base of the fountain. His helmet clanged against the stone.
Ray wanted to push through the Serpentine, but they were too thick, too strong. Like fighting a stone wall.
Thankfully, he caught sight of Lei appearing in the shadow of the mountain face. She locked eyes with him across the square and shouted, “To the outer wall!” Then she and Dojin vanished.
Ray glanced to the side, where Maya was. She shot him a quick look, a determined look, and pushed forward.
The battle raged. Ray’s fear was long since evaporated. It was all instinct now, promising him life but not particularly caring if it was wrong. And he was getting tired. His Elemental energy seemed nearly spent.
Amazingly, the giant serpent seemed to retreat, as if its work with the old Elemental Master was its only purpose. An effective purpose - Ray and Maya were the only Masters left fighting. As the snake slid back around the mountain, the Serpentine renewed their attack with force. Villagers fell under the crushing might of the huge Anacondrai.
Maya kept fighting. Her expression was a fierce, fierce thing when she was angry. But Ray was used to the feeling of losing. He knew this battle couldn’t be won.
It wasn’t really his decision to make, but he made it anyway. “Retreat!” he called to the villagers.
It seemed they’d been waiting for the word. The line broke, and the villagers scattered. The snakes raised a cacophony hiss of triumph.
Only Maya remained. Her sight of the fountain was cut off and that seemed to be interfering with her powers. Smaller and smaller balls of water emerged from her fingers.
“Maya!” Ray shouted. “Let’s go!”
She threw more water. It sputtered.
“Maya!”
She dropped her hands with a frustrated yell, then turned on her heel and sprinted after him.
The Serpentine gave chase. Ray kept Maya and the villagers moving, but he had to turn and fend off the black snakes. A blade sliced his upper arm and he barely felt it.
As the warriors dropped away from Ray’s dying fire, he saw someone approaching through their lines. A regal green Serpentine with curling black markings, bearing a golden staff. Its slitted eyes landed on Ray.
Was this the leader, then? The commander of this forsaken battle? Ray wanted so badly to dive through the warriors and set fire to the creature. But he could see his death too clearly in that scenario. It took all his willpower, but he convinced himself to wait.
And run.
They reached the outer wall. Ray took one last look at the smoking buildings, and that green snake with the staff. Even from far away, it leered at him. Smiled to show its fangs.
Ray smiled back, baring his own teeth in challenge. This wasn’t over.
He would not rest until they were free from these monsters.
~~~
“Hold still.” Maya jerked Ray’s shoulder back. “Pouting won’t make it better.”
“I’m not pouting.”
“‘He said, while pouting’.”
This caused Ray to scowl. But he was quiet as Maya finished bandaging his arm.
Flying on dragonback was actually smoother than expected, but if three was a crowd, four was certainly pushing it. Maya had to lean over Ray’s shoulder to get a good angle, which did terrible things to his pulse.
He called to Lei against the wind. “Where did that big snake come from?”
“I don’t know,” she replied. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” She shifted the injured Master of Gravity - for that’s what he was - against her dragon’s neck. He wasn’t dead, but he might still be, if they didn’t hurry.
Ray leaned to the side to avoid Lei’s flapping braids. Below, Ninjago was just sand and rocks. Ahead, the ridge of the Echo Canyons rose above the dunes. Lei’s dragon dipped, ever so slightly, until Ray could see their destination: a small valley between two stone walls, not quite a canyon but a tier above one.
People below scattered for Lei to land. Maya slid off, then Ray and Lei with the Master of Gravity.
Ray surveyed the “valley.” A few worn tents stood between them and the rock walls. Ray noted half a dozen people, if that, looking back at him. Many sets of eyes were drawn to the Anacondrai sword in his hand. He hadn’t realized he was still holding it.
A man hurried toward them, wearing an armored wrap and a full beard Ray would’ve killed for. The wind tousled the man’s black hair.
Lei saw him immediately. “Lorin!”
“Lei.” The man reached them. “I thought you were defending Jamanakai Village.”
“Were,” Lei corrected. “Not anymore. Lorin - Dojin is hurt.”
“I’ll take him.” The man scooped up the Master of Gravity like he weighed nothing - which he probably didn’t. His brow deepened as he turned to Ray and Maya. “Fire and Water, I take it?”
“Yes,” Ray said for both of them.
“I am Lorin, the Master of Earth.” He offered them his free hand. Pleased, Ray shook it, and Maya did the same.
“Lorin,” Lei interjected. “Where’s Wu?”
“Command tent.” He jerked his head toward one of the tents, slightly bigger than the others. “Go. I’ll come when I’ve taken care of our friend here.”
He jogged off with Dojin. Lei guided them toward the command tent. The other Masters followed - Ray assumed that’s who they were. A blonde woman in a long blue coat and boots. A short, mustached man with a fez and green vest. A pair of identical men wearing red full-body armor. What a varied, jumbled lot.
They ducked under the tent flap. Sure enough, there was Master Wu. Amazingly, his staff was away from his hands, leaning against the tent wall. He and an old man in blue robes leaned over a table of maps.
Wu looked up as they entered. “Master of Shadow. Ray, Maya - what are you doing here?”
“Jamanakai Village is lost,” Lei announced. She bowed her head. “I - I’m sorry.”
Wu’s gaze fell low, his eyes shadowed by the dim candlelight. “Dojin. I sent him-”
Lei nodded in confirmation. “He was injured, but he’ll be okay, with luck.”
“And the villagers?”
“Most of them escaped. Not all.”
No one spoke for a long moment.
Ray couldn’t stand the silence. He slammed the table with his palms. “So what? Jamanakai’s gone, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still stop the Serpentine. So what’s next? What do we do now?”
“Well said, Master of Fire,” replied the old man. He looked at Wu. “This does change things. We believed the Serpentine would abandon the effort to move through the Canyons if they could not obtain Jamanakai Village. Now that they have possession, we will likely be facing a war on two fronts. One will be here. The other will be their contingency route, which we have yet to find.”
“I see only one path.” Wu laid a finger on a map. “The direct way from the sands, south of the western Sea of Sand and the mountains. There is a pass here that will give them direct access to the majority of our lands. Ray, did you see Anacondrai?”
Ray started, surprised to be called on. “Yeah, we did.”
“Not many,” Lei added. “Only half a battalion. But that was enough.”
Wu nodded his agreement. He pointed at the brown smudge on the map that indicated the Echo Canyons. “Then of the half moving this way, few are Anacondrai. So the rest of the Anacondrai must be somewhere else. If we can stop them before they reach the pass, we may be able to push back.”
“Master Wu,” a voice rumbled from behind Ray. This was Lorin, who must’ve arrived while they’d been talking. His face was a mask of concern. “There is town in those hills, not far from the pass. My hometown. The Serpentine will have to move through it. We must defend it.”
“So we shall,” Wu promised. He straightened before the gathered Alliance. “It is decided. Five of us will remain here in the Canyons. The rest will go with Lorin and head off the Serpentine. Make haste, my friends.”
Ash waited on the docks just outside of Ninjago City, looking cool on the outside but anxious inside. The tournament sounded shady but he needed to enter for his sister's sake. Their ratty old apartment was all they had and the landlady was all too eager to kick them out. They had to move and he couldn't steal enough to afford the move and a new place without drawing serious attention to both himself and his sister. Word of the tournament reached him before he could make the foolish decision to try to rob some high end store and for that, he was glad. He had just enough time to finish the tournament before they had to move.
What truly made him so on edge was the fact that he was a little different from the other elemental masters from what he could see. Everyone else was either discussing with another master or with themselves while he was mute. Literally. Let's just say he had a bad accident while trying to figure out his powers a few years back. He's been extremely careful with using it since. He looked over at the ocean from the docks then glanced over his shoulder when he heard footsteps approach. Ash's breath caught. They had pale, gray toned skin and dark circles around their dark eyes, not to mention those high cheekbones… He wore a sleeveless vest that gave Ash a nice view of his toned arms. He looked… Ash swallowed thickly. Hot.
'Not the best time to be gay, Ash!’ He scolded himself.
This is a competition. Every man for himself. He has to win. He can't get sidetracked by- oh shit he's standing right next to me. Ash willed himself not to blush- and failed. Hopefully he doesn't notice.
“What are you in for?” Ash looked across at him surprised once he spoke to him.
He floundered for a moment before opening his mouth- then mentally smacking himself once he remembered he can't talk. Does he understand sign language?! What should he do?!
“What? You mute or something?” Shade asked with an arched brow, looking annoyed.
Ash nods hesitantly and Shade blinked, feeling like an asshole.
“Oh. Sorry then.” He says, awkwardly scratching the back of his head.
Ash just waved it off. The reality of it is he was much nicer about it than most were. Which was why he adapted looking as cool as possible so his silence seems like he was not answering whoever on purpose but was too intimidating to call out.
“I understand sign language… Just so you know.” Shade commented and Ash looked at him surprised. “What's your name?”
'Ash.’ He signed quickly, not too keen for anyone else to find out that he was mute.
Gods above knows how many times people have tried to take advantage of that.
“Well, nice to meet you Ash. I'm Shade. Master of Shadow.” He says and Ash was intrigued.
Master of Shadow huh? They both looked up once splashing sounded, seeing the ferry for the tournament come in. He took a breath. This was his chance. They boarded the vessel and Ash immediately grabbed a quiet corner for himself, out of sight as he observed the competition. He could tell he'll have his work cut out for him especially with those ninja in play…
“Hiding in the shadows?” Ash jolted, a silent yelp leaving him before he whipped around to see Shade there, half melded into the darkness.
He placed a hand over his wildly beating heart and took a few breaths before he glared at the Master of Shadow who only chuckled at his plight.
“You looked lonely. I thought I'd keep you company.” Shade says with a smirk, stepping closer to Ash who blushed a little.
He was really close…
“So, what are you the Master of?” Shade asked, reaching for him and Shade used his powers to dissolve into smoke, reappearing behind a confused Shade.
He cleared his throat- one of very few sounds he could make. Shade whipped around to look at him and Ash smirked.
'I'm the master of smoke.’ He signed before returning to his spot leaned against the wall and scoping out the competition.
Shade joined him.
“I take it you don't want anyone else to know about your little…” Shade trailed off and Ash shook his head. “That's gonna be hard since he can read minds.” He says, pointing Neuro out as he leaned against the railings on the other side of the ferry.
“Though he's not who we need to worry about. It's those ninja.” Shade narrowed his eyes at them as they walked around the ship.
Ash watched them as well. He knew they were his biggest competition. They were no joke and he had to bring his A- Game against them. It was inevitable that he would be put against one of them. He knew it.
“Don't sweat it. Those ninja are full of hot air. It's just a matter of outsmarting them…” Shade says, watching them still.
Ash paused.
'You know. I never got your name.' Ash signed and Shade smirked.
"It's Shade."
______________
Ash looked around at his room in the palace amazed, never seeing anything so luxurious with his own eyes before. And he gets to live in this for the tournament?!
'You should see me now sis…’ He thought as he dropped his bag on the huge bed with gray sheets.
Everything was coloured grey or white, in his colours and it was awesome! The Kabuki mentioned something about text to command keyboard… He looked over at the nightstand and spotted a tablet. He picked it up the turned it on- realizing soon after that this was what she meant.
“Nice digs.” Ash flailed, throwing up the tablet before gasping in silent horror as it fell towards the floor.
A gloved hand caught it however and Shade looked at it. Ash sighed in relief before glaring at Shade. He snatched it back before typing angrily.
“What are you? A stalker?” He asked angrily, both of them wincing at the horribly robotic voice that spoke from the speakers hidden in the room.
“Let's not use that. And I can't check up on you? So much for looking out for you.” Shade huffed as he crossed his arms, looking away.
Ash sighed silently then began to sign but realised that Shade wouldn't be able to see. He placed a hand on his shoulder, gaining his attention.
'I'm sorry, alright? The jump scares are just getting to me is all.’ He signed and Shade smirked.
“Well-”
“Fellow fighters, hidden around my island are enough Jadeblades for every participant except for one." Chen announced, interrupting Shade. "The one who returns to the palace arena empty-handed loses. The tournament begins... Now!" He yelled and Shade smirked.
“And so it begins.” He says, having up into the shade of the room. “You better get a jadeblade or else I'll revoke my friendship with you.” Was all he says before vanishing in the shadows.
'Friends?’ Ash mouthed to himself, feeling happy for a moment then wistful. 'Just friends huh?’ He shook his head before heading out to get a jadeblade.
_____________
Ash smirked as he headed back to his room with Shade walking with him.
“Just because you got a jadeblade before me doesn't mean you suddenly have smug rights.” Shade scowled and Ash smirked more. “You don't know how much I want to kiss that smug smirk off your stupid, cute face.” He mumbled to himself, tucking his hand into his pockets.
Ash reached out and touched his exposes arms, alerting Shade to the adorably confused look on his stupid cute face.
“I said you have no idea how much I wanna wipe that smug smirk off of your stupid idiot face.” Shade repeated and Ash oh-ed silently…
Before somehow looking even more smug.
____________
Ash had it bad. He had it really bad and he only knew Shade for what? A day? But he was so snarky and funny and thoughtful and- and… Everything Ash didn't know he was looking for in a person. He wanted to ask him out on a date, to push past the boundaries of friendship but… They only knew each other for a day- and going on a date on this island is next to impossible too. But it didn't stop Ash from wanting. Hopefully he wasn't getting his signals crossed but he thinks Shade likes him that way too.
So he had built up courage to ask him over breakfast about dating after one of them won (hopefully). Sadly, he never got the chance. Neuro sat next to him.
“Well. Aren’t you two cozy.” He comments, looking between them.
“Whadoyah want, brain boy?” Shade asked him with narrowed eyes.
“Nothing really. Everywhere else is either full or has… Unpleasant company.” He says, gesturing to Paleman who was eating by himself- however the food he was chewing wasn't as invisible as the rest of him.
They all shuddered, watching the food clump move downwards.
“... Fair point.” Shade says, pushing his food away with a grimace and Ash nodded, doing the same.
“Don’t worry Ash, you'll have other chances.” Neuro says before taking a sip of his drink, hoping to regain his appetite.
Ash flushed immediately and Shade narrowed his eyes at Neuro, gritting his teeth. Ash was his. He was the one who should make him blush like that.
'I have no idea what you're talking about.’ Ash thought as he lifted his hands to sign it.
“Don't worry about that.” Neuro says, holding onto his hands and pushing them back down. “I can read your mind. And denial gets you nowhere.” He says with a smirk, returning to his meal.
'Could you not?!’ Ash yelled in his mind, still flustered and Neuro chuckled.
“You do realise that while you might have yelled that, the volume of your mind's voice didn't change… Right?” Neuro asked as Shade seethed across from them.
How dare this mind talker sweep in and steal his soon to be boyfriend?! Yes, he knew Ash was going to ask him out- he signs his thoughts when he's nervous- and he was looking forward to saying yes but this ignoramus-
“You do know I can read your mind too… Right?” Neuro says, narrowing his eyes at him.
“I was counting on it.” Shade says with a smirk as Ash looked between the two warily.
“First of all, I didn't steal anyone.” Neuro says irritably, leaning forward to glare at the Shadow master. “And secondly-”
"The tournament of Elements continues. Fun time!" Chen says from the intercom, interrupting Neuro. "Would the following Masters please make their way to their assign arena? Speed, Gravity, Smoke-” Ash gasped soundlessly as Shade's eyes widened.
“Nature, Mind, oh, and last and hopefully not least… Fire! Remember, only one can remain." Chen reminded them.
“Perfect.” Neuro sighed then stood. “I'll see you both on the other side then.” He says before leaving.
“Come on Ash. Let's go.” Shade says standing as well and Ash sighed but nodded, following after him.
This was his last chance. He may not make it to the next round and he'd have to leave the island. He had to say something before that match. He had to get closure. Ash looked around, seeing that no-one else was headed in this direction before reaching out and taking Shade by the hand as he stopped, flushing. Shade was surprised by his sudden courage but was secretly grateful. He lead him down the long way to the arenas for a reason. Though he was the one planning on staying something about what they had, what they could have. Ash looked nervous however. Shade paused.
“You never did tell me why you joined the tournament.” Shade says and Ash looked up at him before pulling his hand away to sign.
'My sister and I are in a bad spot. We're about to be evicted with nowhere else to go and money's tight. You can only steal so much after all.’ He shrugged then continued. 'If I don't win, I'm not sure what we'll do…’ He looked worried now.
“Hey, that kind of talk- or signing- will get you nowhere.” Shade says, tilting his chin up and Ash felt himself blush brightly. “You've gotta keep your head high. Be confident and try your hardest. You'll win. You'll see.” He says and Ash blinked then nodded.
'You may look tough on the outside but you're ready a softy, aren't you.’ Ash signed with a knowing smirk and Shade's cheeks darkness as he looked away with a huff.
“I don't know what you mean.” He says and Ash laughed soundlessly to himself.
He decided to go for it and brush his fingers against his cheek, gaining his attention again.
'Don't deny it… I like that about you…’ Ash blushed deeper. 'I like all of you. Maybe we could catch a movie or something after this all blows over?’ He looked hopeful that he wasn't wrong.
“I thought you'd never ask.” Shade huffed and Ash looked at him wide eyed.
He was glad he accepts but… He knew?! How?!
“You sign your thoughts when you're nervous- and caught off guard I see.” He says, looking down at his hands that were still saying 'how’.
Ash facepalmed in embarrassment.
When else does he unconsciously sign?
“Master of Smoke? Where are you? We need you at the arenas!” Chen spoke over the intercom and they both looked up.
'I better-’ Shade held his hands, cutting Ash off.
“The old man can wait a moment longer.” Shade says, crowding Ash in who had gone red all over again.
He leaned down and gave the knuckles on his left hand a kiss and Ash could feel the heat radiating from his face.
Was he…?
Shade did lean in, releasing his hands to tilt his chin up and wrap his arm around his waist. Ash felt his heart pounding as his eyes fell shut, lips eagerly waiting for Shade's. He finally kissed him, the first contact light, teasing even before he deepened it. Ash hooked his fingers into his vest, pulling him closer as they ignored another announcement from Chen, trying to see where Ash was. They pulled back with a soft smack, Ash's cheeks a rosy red as he looked up at Shade through long, gray lashes.
“Now we can go.” Shade murmured and Ash laughed in his voiceless way, smile bright.
______________
His smile wasn't as bright when the master of fire outsmarted him and got the jadeblade. He immediately looked to where Shade was sitting, his heart plummeting as he saw him standing in the stands, looking crestfallen.
'Shade…’ He mouthed, reaching a hand towards his direction but he fell through the trapdoor with a silent yell, his chances of winning gone.
He landed with a grunt below. What would he tell his sister? How would they get by? He looked up once he heard sinister laughing, realising he was surrounded by Cultists. Moreover, will he even make it back to her?
Shade seethed on the stands as the ninja celebrated their success just before him. If they think he'd let them win, they had another thing coming to them. He sneered as he walked away, glaring ahead. He'll win this thing and he'll win it for Ash.
_______________
Ash worked in the factory in silence. That was no surprise but he tried to keep to himself. He had no powers. No means of protecting himself. They hadn't found out that he was mute as yet but it was a matter of when. He was afraid of what that implied. That day came a few days later.
“Hey! Pick up the slack!” The guard yelled, hitting him in the leg as he pushed a huge vat.
He yelled out as he immediately dropped to his knees, holding his shin. That hurt! He shot a glare at the guard but paled when he looked surprised.
“You… You can't talk.” He whispered then looked sinister, making Ash limp back as he stood.
The Cultist looked around before shoving Ash in a sheltered corner, making him wince as he hit the wall hard. Rough hands grabbed his, pinning them over his head and Ash fought against him but he was no good at fighting pinned down like this. He attempted to kick but the Cultist only grabbed his leg, holding his hands with one hand now.
“You better stop before you really make me mad. You'll like it, don't worry.” The Cultist whispered against his neck and he shuddered with a grimace of disgust.
This can't be happening. There were others not too far away. They could stop this but he didn't have the voice to call their attention. He pressed himself as far back against the wall as possible, turning his head away as the Cultist slotted himself between his legs, pulling the zipper of his prison uniform down at the front. He felt the tears fall down his cheek as the asshole began to lick his neck.
Someone… Help…
A loud crack echoed and Ash blinked his eyes open, surprised when he felt the Cultist grow limp against him before falling over. He blinked up at the earth ninja surprised as he held an iron bar in hand, watching him spit on the unconscious (possibly dead) Cultist.
“You alright?” Cole asked him as he slid his clothes back up.
His fingers trembled as he tried to zip up the uniform but he failed.
“Let me.” He says and reached out then pulled it up for him. “No-one's supposed to know I'm here but I won't let any of these sick bastards touch you.” Cole says and Ash hated that he felt relieved at that.
He couldn't even protect himself. He was thankful for the Ninja however.
________
“Ash!” Shade wrapped him up in a hug, relief filling him.
Ash clutched him tightly, burying his face into his neck.
“Are you ok? Did any of these bastards hurt you?” He asked with a growl, looking at the Cultists speaking at the door, one of which had a rather nasty lump through the huge hole in the back of his Anacondrai skull helmet.
“Almost.” Cole says, pulling his hat down but Shade knew it was the ninja.
He narrowed his eyes.
“Who.” He says in a tone that screamed murder.
Ash shaking his head against his shoulder then looked up at him.
'It's not worth it. They'll send you to the cells or to feed the serpent if you cause trouble.’ He signed and Shade frowned.
He had to stay by Ash's side so they can get out of here. He however casted a look at the injured Cultists, feeling that it was that asshole. But if he can squeeze in murder while they go, why not?
“Don't worry. We'll get out of here.” Shade says to him gently, pressing a kiss to his forehead as he held him close.
_____________
Ash had never been more happy to have his power back. Everyone was free and outside wrecking the boat. He hated feeling as defenseless as he did but at least he knew now he can't always rely on.
“Hey.” He looked across to see Shade walking over. “I told you we'd get out of here, didn't I?” He says, standing before him and Ash smiled- then frowned.
‘I’m glad we're free but I still have a problem. My sister and I… We have nowhere to go.’ Ash signed sadly.
“Not necessarily…” Shade says and Ash looked at him confused. “My old man died a while back and let me the house. You guys could crash with me for as long as you need.” He shrugged, smirking at Ash's wide gray eyes.
'Really? That'd be amazing!’ Ash signed with a grin but then he looked perplexed. 'But… If you're already well off… Why do the tournament?’ He questioned.
“I was bored. Plus, who doesn't want more money?” Shade shrugged and Ash rolled his eyes then smiled. “You can room with me. I can tell already you're the cuddling type. I wonder if you sign in your sleep…” He grinned, watching Ash go red.
“Maybe you-” Ash tipped up and shut him up with a kiss, melting into it as Shade pulled him closer by the waist.
They may not be out of the woods yet but it's like Shade says: The old man can wait a moment.
Ninjago: The Falcon
An Unforgettable Moment in Zane’s ‘Childhood’
I had no idea where I was.
All I saw was that I was surrounded by thin tall trees and snow. The expanse of snow was as far as I could see in every single direction. I was trudging slowly in the ankle deep snow, but when some part of me realized I had no idea where I was, I paused, and tried to get my bearings.
I scanned the area. There was no movement, no sound, no signs of anything living. I didn’t know where in the world I was, why I was there, and…. well, who I was. I had no memories, no past experiences, and the only thing of my past that I remembered was my name.
I looked up to the sky, looking for smoke, birds, anything that could lead me out of the woods. When nothing moved and nothing appeared, I looked straight ahead and continued walking.
I walked for another hour in a general direction and nothing changed. There was still snow everywhere I looked, no sounds in any direction, no movement-
What was that?
I focused in on where the movement came from. The area was still. I almost forgot about it when a tree in the distance shifted.
My body froze. Although I had no recollection of who I was or any memories in the past, my instinct told me that trees don’t move. I traced my eyes up the tree trunk, and when I got to the top, I realized I wasn’t looking at a tree.
I was staring at a monster.
There were four legs that blended perfectly as trees, but the upper part was a horror to look at. It had a huge ovalish body with a spike for a tail and it had a rectangular shaped head with two scarlet red eyes. It had two attenai sticking out of its forehead and from its mouth emitted pinchers, therefore making the beast look like a huge four legged spider.
Something invisible struck me as if I was struck by lightning. I couldn’t stop staring at it although I desperately wanted too. I wished to turn and run in the opposite direction, but my legs were stuck in the snow like quicksand. I didn’t know what came over me, but it was forcing me to stand perfectly still as the huge monster began to move in my direction.
Suddenly, there was another one that came from the other side, and one from the other side, and half a dozen others that appeared right in front of my eyes due to their perfect camouflage. Finally, my legs finally allowed them to be moved, and I began to creep backwards, away from the mass of tree monsters that were approaching me at an alarming rate.
It was then when one of the monsters roared, but the noise did not come from one the beasts in front of me. The roar came from right behind me.
I slowly turned and looked up. Directly above me was the hideous of all the monsters: it had a diamond shaped head with at least eight red eyes and a nasty grin with a long forked tongue ready to eat me as its midday snack.
I probably pulled the stupidest move possible at that point: I ran right through its legs.
The monster roared in fury as I dashed below him and in the opposite direction. I ran as hard as I could in a straight line, hoping I was fast enough to out run the tree monsters.
Almost immediately, the ground began to shake behind me, and a quick glance proved that the tree monsters were in a gallup rushing towards me. The largest one was in the front, and was actually moving pretty quickly for its large body. Feeling more of what I had felt before, I tried to run faster and faster as I dashed through the snowy forest.
It wasn’t long until the leader beast caught me. It was an unexpected move, for I was running with all I could muster, when suddenly I was flying through the air and my body slammed into a tree.
The monsters all roared in victory for a reason I was unaware of- all I did was slam into a tree. I pushed myself off the ground and stared at the beast, which when it realized I wasn’t dead, it roared in fury.
“You’ll have to do better than that to bring me down!” I shouted to the beast. I turned to continue running, but my path was blocked by a tree monster leg, and then one slammed down behind me, then next to me, then on the other side.
Within three seconds, I was completely surrounded. I looked up to the leader, whose evil grin seemed more intimidating than ever. It lifted its leg over my head, ready to crush me. I braced for the end.
Suddenly, a cry I wasn’t familiar with echoed throughout the forest, and I, along with all of the tree monsters, froze with the fear of what else was out there.
A shadow passed overhead. I looked up, squinting in the sunlight, to see a falcon circling ahead. As I was staring at it, I saw its wings tilt in the breeze and it shot downward, claws out. And the falcon was flying towards me.
I ducked my head and lifted my hands to protect me, but nothing came. I felt no outside pressure, or sharp claws digging into my arms. However, a few seconds later, I heard the cry of the falcon followed by the roar of a tree monster. Dumbfounded, I looked up and saw the falcon dive and attack the beast, whose forehead was already spotted with scarlet blood. The other tree monsters roared in fear and fled, afraid they would be next.
The falcon made contact with the leader again, and it roared in pain. The falcon soared up, just escaping the huge biting mouth of the beast. The falcon emitted one last battle cry and opened his wings as wide as possible to intimidate its enemy.
I grinned. The falcon was saving my life!! And when the beast roared in fury yet fear toward the wonderful bird, it turned and raced after the other monsters.
The falcon swooped down and landed in a branch within one of the trees, and it twisted its head and looked straight at me.
I smiled at my hero. “Thank you, falcon.” I spoke to the bird.
The bird tilted its head, as if, trying to understand what I had said to it. Then, remarkably, the falcon opened its wings and took flight right above my head. It made some sort of loop in the air, gave a warm call, then flew off in a certain direction.
For a second, I was in awe, wondering if it was just me or if that the falcon had just asked me to follow it.
However, I had nothing to loose, so I blindly dashed after the black falcon as he flew into the deep snowy forest.
_______________________________________________
It seemed like hours. I was just running after a falcon who kept flying in one direction, either directing me to help or to my death.
Surprisingly, the bird was not growing tired, but continued flapping his wings, giving me his call every few minutes to make sure I was still there.
Finally, hope emerged from the snow. Up ahead, in the distance, was a thin line of smoke in the sky.
I ran harder than I had done all day as I dashed toward civilians in the forest. At that moment I knew I was going to be okay once I was going to be with others like myself.
After a few minutes I arrived at a walled community. It was a nice town surrounded by a brick wall at least 20 feet tall. I located the gate and walked over to it.
Before I knocked, a small slit snapped open on the gate. A light blue eye appeared and stared directly at me for a few seconds before snapping it shut.
I heard the snap of the gate unlock almost immediately afterwards. The gate swung open to reveal a man in his fifties. He had long gray hair to his shoulders and icy blue eyes that were full of concern when he stared at me. He had soft wrinkles surrounding his eyes and mouth, and he was wearing what seemed to be a giant sheet with armor on top of it.
“Son, what are you doing outside by yourself?” He asked to me, voice full of disbelief.
“You’re my father?” I asked.
The man chuckled half-heartedly, then replied, “It’s just a saying, boy. What are you doing out here alone? How long have you been outside?”
“It’s been a few hours,” I answered, quite truthfully.
“My word,” he breathed. He grabbed my wrist and took me into the town. It was small with quaint little homes and smoke emitting from each one. Near to the brick wall to the left was a small pond, frozen over and covered in a thin layer of snow. There were a few people about, all wearing heavy clothing, mittens, and some with a hat.
Upon entering, all movement stopped as everyone all turned and stared at me. The looked at me if I was some outsider that was very very alien to them, and some of them saw me as a threat. However, the gate keeper ushered me inside the city and towards one of the homes.
“My wife is inside. If you tell her you were outside for a few hours, she will serve you some hot tea and soup. Also feel welcome to use as many blankets as you want to make yourself warm again.”
“But I’m not cold,” I objected.
“Hush,” the man said as he opened the door. “You may have a good attitude towards the weather, but only a few more hours out there would of killed you.” He pushed me inside and then was ready to shut the door.
He hesitated. “How did you find us, anyway? We are a hard colony to find here in Ninjago.”
I opened my mouth to tell him the truth, but my instinct stopped me. Something told me normal people don’t follow birds to get them to their destinations, or escape ginormous tree monsters or survive being slammed into a tree. Most importantly, something told me that people usually don’t survive in freezing conditions in a white long sleeve shirt and long pants and shoes for as long as I did. I was either lucky, or very very different.
“I really don’t know sir,” I answered. “I guess I’m just really lucky.”
The man laughed. “Yes you are very lucky indeed. And right now, you are very lucky to be alive.” On that note he shut the door and left me in the small house.
“Hello?” came a soothing voice from somewhere in the house. I turned and watched as a woman, around the same age as the man I had just walked with, walked into the room and noticed me. “Oh my!” She gasped. “Who are you, dear?”
This town has many weird sayings, I thought, but I told the woman just what the man told me to say, and she vanished faster than she appeared. “Sweetie, there are blankets on the sofa. Please, wrap yourself up and get cozy! I’ll be with you with tea and soup in a jiffy!”
I walked over to the couch and sat down on the soft pillow. I took a nice white blanket and threw it over my body, but it made no difference. I didn’t know what being cold was.
I thought back to when I first noticed the smoke. I had imagined a city in the snow, made out of people who talked and moved and felt like I did, but I was incorrect. I had stumbled upon a village where they call strangers their sons and dears and stare at people that were new and lived within a gate. This was more unknown than I had ever imagined in the first place.
I looked out the window, which was covered by a slab of glass. We were next to the wall, but I could see just over it, where I could see the tallest branches in the tallest trees and the snow that was lying untouched on the wood. I stared out into the dangerous world where tree monsters lurked and the world was so similar in every direction you could get lost incredibly fast.
And then I thought back to the falcon, the creature that saved me from suffering in the snow and saved me from a crushing blow of the monsters. I would never forget the heroic actions of the bird and how I would still be lost without it.
As the smell of warm tea and soup filled the house, I smiled. Even though I was once surrounded by monsters, I found compassion out of a bird, and now I found compassion in a couple in a random village. Creatures and people like this are the reason why life is a bliss and wonderful to live in.
Suddenly, a voice I did not recognize seemed to speak in my head. “You are Zane, and you are meant to protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
As soon as the voice stopped, I was still frozen in shock. “Zane,” I whispered to myself, repeating a name that seemed familiar aloud, recognizing that it was my name.
And that I was to protect those who need protecting.
For a while when I was wandering in he forest, unsure of who I was and where I was, I had no idea what my purpose was as well.
But now I know. I have certain abilities that others clearly do not, and I had to use those in order to help others. It was my purpose in life, and I was ready to fulfill that.
_____________________________________________
Somewhere in the forest, quite close to the village in fact, was a falcon, waiting for the day to come when his friend was going to emerge again.
Elemental Masters Headcanons
Ash: -Mute, uses sign language to communicate -Or he mouths what he wants to say if the other party can stand smoke -Breathes normally and stuff but can’t play any instrument that needs the player to blow (aka brass and woodwinds) -Smoke is CONSTANTLY being emitted from his mouth as dead cells are turned into ash and excreted alongside the waste air from his lungs -Hair is even messier than Kai’s because he can’t be bothered to comb it every time he’s done reforming -Always seen hanging out with Chamile, Toxkita and Shade -rumour is that they’re all dating -the rumour is true they all love each other and share secrets via sign language -Knows all the gossip about the EMs
Bolobo: -One of the two Group Dads -A really good cook -Likes the sun and really hot weather -Is never seen without his staff or the feather thing he has around his neck -Is very proud of his beard -Fights Wu over who has the best beard -Occasionally ties his hair up in a loose ponytail -Tries to meme to look hip and cool -Fails to meme -Can’t figure out technology at all (he can operate basic stuff like tvs but a computer is pushing it) -Probably a Disney Princess™ in disguise because if he tries to sing birds and all kinds of woodland creatures spawn near his area -He can’t sing but the spawning happens anyway
Chamile: -The No. One person to go to for gossip on all of the EMs -Loves to bet on who can see through her disguise the fastest -Is constantly told purple isn’t a cool colour -Really good at makeup -Actually dyed her hair for the tournament and dyed it a less saturated purple afterwards -Can and will forcefully apply makeup to other EMs when bored -Knows exactly how to make Shade smile -The embodiment of “Looks can kill”
Griffin Turner (buckle in buddies): -Really good liar -Constantly smiles to hide his true feelings -Cries a lot -Refuses to take his aviators off in front of anyone -Is actually the son of Krux, and the Master of Time -Wears his aviators to hide his inherited reflective iris (think the eyes of the HoT) -Always on time -Has an obsession with clocks -Constantly wishes his father was on the side of Good -Is very good friends with Skylor and Garmadon (before he kicked the bucket) -Is MUCH older than he looks -Once helped the Hands of Time, still has his armour from back when he helped them -Has a bad habit of speaking really fast and mixing up his sentences -Can’t express his feelings properly so he just smiles -Has extreme pyrophobia -Can’t stand Kai at all -Has a pet possum named Minute who he constantly refers to as a cat (she really likes grapes) -Often has visions of random points in time, be it from his own timeline or other timelines -Hates magic and the phrase “I wish” -Tries to flirt but fails -Loves classical music -Uses a metronome to calm down -Never looks forward to the future because he knows it’s always bound to be bad -A nihilist -Actually on okay terms with Jay -Muses about the past with Zane -Can stay on beat when playing instruments (plays percussion the most) but can’t always get the right notes
Invizable/Paleman: -Really shy -like his mom had to convince him to go (“to make new friends!”) and forced Shade to accompany him -Is blind whenever he makes himself fully invisible (because no light enters his eyes) so he picked up using his memory and sound to locate his targets -Older cousin of Shade -Writes (popular) fanfiction of the EMs anonymously -Hates loud noises and being stared at -Is a shitposter -Has really good memory -Will hold a grudge but is too nervous to do anything about it -Is a complete doormat -Tells really bad jokes -Constantly hides behind Shade whenever something dangerous/scary happens -His element of Light is tied to the element of Shadow so if anything bad happens to Shade, the same happens to him (eg Shade breaks a leg, Invizable breaks the same leg in a similar accident) -Morning person, extremely active on sunny days -Has to be forced do things if the event happens at night
Jacob Pevsner: -Was born blind -Hums to himself to stay calm -Fidgets with his sitar a lot -Accidentally hurt his vocal chords during a fight, so he uses his sitar as a replacement for his powers of Sound -Hides things in his afro -Resents being short -Will attack anyone who asks him why he is short -Really likes old music and classical -Can sing anything perfectly, and do all the parts himself in one shot -Good friends with Lou and the rest of The Royal Blacksmiths -Occasionally helps out with their shows -Grew attached to the serpent and got a pet snake after the Second Serpentine War (his name is Da Capo and he’s a corn snake)
Shade: -Same as Invizable: His element of Shadow is tied to the element of Light so if anything bad happens to Invizable, the same happens to him (eg Invizable burns his hand, Shade burns the same hand in a similar accident) -Will hurt whoever Invizable has a grudge against -Hates talking -Really loves beanbags -Eternally stuck in a goth phase -Loves wolves -Is a closet furry and has a wolf fursona -Younger cousin of Invizable -Huge fan of heavy metal -Can only play the violin, all other instruments are either out of tune or offbeat -Has a pilot’s licence -Can’t stand in bright light for too long or he’ll lose his physical form -Also can’t stand in complete darkness for too long or he’ll lose control of his element -Loves to pick fights for seemingly no reason -Extremely rich and loves being spoiled -Loves dark chocolates with raspberry filling and Black Forest cake -Knows ALL the other EMs’ secrets and will trade them in exchange for food
