I was told a myth where there’s fairies and other magical creature living in these woods. It was raining when we got to the mystical forest. There’s a few dinky cottages filled with different kind of crafts and jewelry, as though elves made them. The warm glow from the cottages filled the dark rainy forest, making me feel like I really entered into a magical realm. I also noticed a few owl statues around the area, believing that the wise owls are the guardians of the forest. - June 2019 - #Hokkaido #VSCO #ShotOnCanon #CanonEOS600D #ShotOniPhone #ShotOnMoment #MomentWide #VSCOgoodshot #peoplescreatives #indies_gram #exploreobserveshare #moodygram #JP_mood #ningleterrace #rainyday #magical #fairies #owl #forestphotography #visual_square #roamearth #mytinyatlas #tonekillers #nature_perfection #passionpassport #miinxmiin (at Ningle Terrace ニングルテラス) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEI-LIaJvr8/?igshid=13wxi0yenu4oe

Day 6: When You’re Too Early For The Spring Bloom in Biei
The morning was slightly disappointing for the fact that my shoes were a mess…. They didn’t fit like they should and the melted part was squishing my toes. Sadness. But I guess I have to deal with it.
Anyhow, the first stop of the morning was the Furano Marche, a little marketplace/plaza area where we ended up buying some pastries at Caveres for the morning. Once our breakfast was picked up, we drove out to a restaurant called Daimaru in Biei, a restaurant famous for its curry udon (again, we are in the region that specializes in curry). AND IT WAS SO GOOD!!! Again, the continued curry theme for this trip! So, what is curry udon? It’s udon with curry soup as the dip. With my specific combo, I also had cold milk from Biei and pork katsu cutlet that was cook so very well and really crispy on the outside. The combination of everything was delightful and I was really tempted to buy more but did not. Sad. But wow, one of my favorite foods/restaurants this trip!
With our stomach stuffed with delicious curry, we headed out towards the main parts of Biei, a little town that was known for its spectacular lavender fields, its rolling hills, and its farms of colorful flowers. And the first trip we made was to see the area known as Patchwork no Michi, a place where you’re supposed to see rolling hills of patchwork fields of color. But unfortunately, given the time of year we arrived here, everything was still dead from the winter season. So, instead of beautifully colored fields, we saw rolling hills of brown and gray with snow-capped mountains towering in the background. Still a cool scene, but definitely would’ve been cooler had spring come earlier.
As our hope was plummeting, we tried to revive it by checking out a well-known flower farm in the area called Shikisai no Oka. And, we too were disappointed here as there were only little bits of baby lavender and other colorful flowers growing. We were early by a few weeks, unfortunately. But more like a couple of months, given that the area looks fully in bloom in mid to late summer. But despite our disappointment, we made the most of the trip to the flower farm and walked around the grounds, looking at the work being put in to prepare for the upcoming spring. Still a unique experience, nevertheless.
Afterward, we drove down a roller coaster road while continuing to look out for more rolling hill scenes that would be photography-worthy. Though the scene was neat, it was hard to get photographs because I had a specific photo I wanted to capture and sometimes the conditions just weren’t perfect for the photo I wanted. But in the end, I was able to take a couple decent photos despite being presented the difficult circumstances of little color and no lavender in the fields.
We drove around seeing the scenes for a little while longer before driving out to Ningle Terrace, a cute area with cabin gift shops selling local artists’ arts and crafts. The setting here at Ningle Terrace was very fairy tale-like, given the fifteen wooden cabins surrounded by snow with wooden walkways leading from one cabin to another and lights lining the cabins and walkways. Pretty neat! After walking around the different shops and checking out their goods, I determined that my favorite shop was the one selling simplistic cardstock cards of nature and landscapes in the area. And my second fave was the wooden figurine shop with the owner actually making figurines right in front of you! These people are so talented. And besides my favorites, there were shops selling things from cards to jewelry to candles in tree trunks to figurines to other woodworks. I can definitely see this place as a go-to area during the holiday season despite it’s high prices.
Once we were done with window shopping, we grabbed dinner at Sennari Shabu Shabu, a shabu shabu place in town. It was warm and perfect for the cool evening. Some good soupy broth with pork, lamb, and beef mixed in with veggies and noodles. And to top it off, some green tea and sakura ice cream. Stuffed, we left and made a pit stop to grab some snacks and food for breakfast before cleaning up for the night. Man, this trip is going by quickly! Already past halfway through!
5 Things I Learned Today:
1. There are many specialty foods in the different cities and towns of Japan. And in Hokkaido, there are many specialties. Hokkaido as a whole region is known for its milk. Omelette curry in Furano. Curry udon in Biei. Sushi in Otaru. Food dreams come true here!
2. Biei is considered one of the most beautiful villages/towns in Japan. But probably in the spring and summer, given what we saw lol.
3. It’s very difficult to sit down on the ground and eat comfortably at a short table when you are bow-legged. I’d much rather sit in a chair with a back to it to avoid sitting Indian/Native American style.
4. “Dake” at end of words or names probably means “mountain”.
5. Don't leave your shoes near a space heater to dry.

Since it has been a long time I posted a travel pic, here it is! When this place was listed in our itinerary, I was quite hesitant thinking it would be a normal shopping area. I'm glad that I didn't miss it out. You'll love this place if you love both shopping and nature. These are beautiful shops made of timber logs selling traditional handicrafts. Also, visit during the evenings for a romantic night illumination and to enjoy the cool breeze amidst the dense trees as you shop 🤩 Posting a video on Hokkaido travel soon. #samxjapan #hokkaido #ningleterrace #snow (at Ningle Terrace)
