Here’s my lens wish list, some are on there for fun and some I actually want.

What camera gear would you recommend for a beginner?

Before you worry too much about getting the best gear, make sure you learn how to use it first. You could go out and buy the fanciest camera and lenses and still not take good photos because you don’t know how to use your camera or how to “see”. There’s also a saying, “you marry your lenses and date your bodies”. Invest in good lenses, preferably full frame compatible ones in case you ever decide to upgrade to full frame, and get a cheaper body to start. With that out of the way…

If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend getting a refurbished or used camera from the D7100+ line. They’ve come down in price as of late and are pretty solid cameras. Just make sure to check the shutter count.

I’d skip anything from the D3000 & D5000 lines. They’re not bad cameras but they do not have built in autofocus meaning they rely on the lens itself having autofocus. This isn’t horrible but it does limit what lenses you can use (and some of the lenses that won’t autofocus with those cameras are good AND cheap) and that can be confusing for a beginner.

As for a lens, a 50mm f/1.8, or 35mm f/1.8 is a great lens. Both lenses are inexpensive, have good quality glass, and can used for nearly everything. The 18-55mm lens that comes with cameras isn’t bad either. 

I don’t shoot Canon/Sony/whatever else so I can’t give any advice there sorry!

How did you learn to take photos?

LOTS of practice, I first picked up a camera back in 2013. In high school and college I took photography classes but ultimately I didn’t really learn much from them, they started at too basic of a level.

I did learn a lot about photography from taking art classes however. They taught me framing, how to use shadows/light, and movement in a photo (where does your eye travel when you view an image/art piece). My mom is also a professional photojournalist so I picked up some knowledge from her and my grandfather who’s also a published photographer.

How can I take better photos?

Again, lots of practice. Learn what every setting and button on your camera does, try different shooting modes, take the same photo at several different apertures and shutter speeds to see what changes. You can learn a lot from reading articles too but the best way to learn, imo, is by doing. Don’t worry about getting the best gear and the best camera, learn how to take photos first.

Study other photographers photos, and even paintings, and see what you like. Pay attention to directional lines and where your eye travels. Learn how to use Photoshop/Lightroom (just pirate it). Take photos in different weather, lighting, and times of day. 

What programs do you use to edit? What presets/filters do you use?

I use Lightroom and Photoshop Classic along with custom presets that I’ve made for different situations (fog, snow, etc) to process most of my images and then I make minor tweaks. A lot of my presets started as VSCO presets and then I kept the things I liked and changed the things I didn’t.

What is your job?

I’m a real estate photographer specializing in short term rentals. I love it.

Are you related to Eddie Vedder?

Yep, we’re very distantly related. Something like 7th cousins twice removed but I’ve never met him.

Can you add a photo to your print shop?

Sure! Just tell me the name of the photo (or link it if possible, I reuse a lot of names) you want added and I’ll get it up there.

Close up filters are a good secondary lens used for macro photography which don’t need a special lens. They allow your lens to focus more closely.

An extension tube is a hollow cylinder that fits in between your camera and lens causing the lens to move further from the sensor. This distance that is created allows your lens to focus more closely.

Bellows are accordion like pleated expandable parts which are normally placed placed the camera and the lens. The bellows which can be extended or retracted allow the photographer to move the lens even further from the camera to capture extreme close up shots.

What’s the last song you listened to? 'Hot Knife’ by Fiona Apple, but ‘Plant White Roses’ by the Magnetic Fields with Susan Anway on vocals has dominated the last 24 hours of my life and deserves heaps of praise.

What was the last movie you watched? 'The Exterminating Angel’ directed by Luis Bunuel. It’s about a group of (rather awful) people who get trapped in a room for a very long time; unfortunately, the surreal humour of it didn’t quite come across as either surreal or humourous right now. I may watch it again someday after COVID, and if so I’m sure I’ll like it much more.

What are you currently watching? I’ve mostly used TV to kill time as pleasantly as possible (though I did watch ‘Fleabag’ a few months ago and LOVED IT). ‘QI’ and ‘Would I Lie To You’ are on constant rotation.

What are you currently reading? Also ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce, amazingly, though it’s my first time through. I’m almost done with Episode 14. I’ve also downloaded the radio play version (which I’ve really enjoyed) and have mixed my reading with listening to episodes of previous chapters.

What are you currently craving? I bought a Nikon F4 a couple weeks ago, and the main thing I am craving are more lenses for it. I have a Nikon Series E 100mm, a Nikkor 300mm that I call ‘Big Bertha,’ a truly wonderful Tamron 95mm macro, and a so-so generic 28mm, all manual focus, but the F4 is Nikon’s first pro camera to support auto-focus, so of course I want to play with that set of toys. I’ve mainly lusted after the AF 20mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, and the breathtaking 105mm with bokeh control, all of which would also be delicious to use on my Olympus Micro 4/3 digital camera (that camera’s crop factor effectively doubles the magnification of lenses, so the 20mm would work like a 40mm, and I think would be an AMAZING alternative to a 35mm lens; the 50mm would be like a super-fast 100mm portrait lens; and the 105mm would become a 210mm telephoto with incredible depth of field control for wildlife shooting). We’ll see what the new year brings!

話は変わりますが、Olympus の ME-1 というマグニファイアを EOS 20D に付けてみました。 ファインダー像を 1.2 倍に拡大してくれます。 これはメーカー違いなのですが、EOS 20D には無改造で取り付けられます。 しかも、アイカップの代わりになって、ジャストフィット。(^^)V 私は眼鏡を掛けていますので、そのまま覗くと多少四隅を蹴られますが、チョコチョコと視線を動かせばよく、大きな問題にはなりませんでした。 裸眼であれば、勿論ファインダー全体を見渡せます。 Nikon のマグニファイアを取り付けるキットもあるようですが、Olympus のほうが取り付けた際の出っ張りが少なく、使い易く感じたので、ME-1 に決めました。 EOS 20D のファインダー像がぐっと大きくなり、格段に見易くなりました。 ピントの山が良く判るようになりますので、マクロ派の方にはお勧めです。 　 　 ------------------------ ○ camera : CANON EOS 20D with Olympus ME-1 ○ lens : SIGMA APO MACRO 150 mm F2.8 EX DG HSM ○ focal length : 150 mm ( compared to 35mm format : 240 mm ) ○ shooting mode : Aperture-Priority AE ○ Tv ( Shutter Speed ) : 1/1,600 sec. ○ Av ( Aperture Value ) : F 2.8 ○ ISO speed rate : 100

1/ Ống kính Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F1.8G

Ống kính một tiêu cự linh hoạt này lý tưởng cho các nhiếp ảnh gia ở mọi cấp độ kỹ năng – ngay cả người mới bắt đầu, nhờ vào mức giá phải chăng của nó. What’s New in Lightroom Classic 9.0 (November 2019)?

Lightroom Classic 9.0 has been released today. This isn’t a 9.0 in the conventional sense, because it’s now subscription software instead of a single payment. New features have been released every couple of months, rather than having to wait for a single x.0 release. In the last year, we’ve had:

8.1 (December 2018) – customize Develop panel order, Book module Snap to Grid, preset management improvements, photo merge improvements

8.2 (February 2019) – Enhance Details, Nikon tethering, Map altitude

8.3 (May 2019) – Texture Slider, Flat Field Correction, Preserved Filename, Faster Import from Memory Card

8.4 (August 2019) – Advanced GPU Improvements, Batch HDR/Panorama Merges, Book Auto-Create Cell, Export as PNG, Collection panel Color Labels, Filmstrip Index Numbers

This release upgrades your catalog format, so you can’t easily roll back to 8.4.1. Adobe also moved the Sync.lrdata file to sit alongside the relevant catalog to improve performance and reliability.

Updated System Requirements

On Windows 10, you now need Version 1809 or later. To use GPU acceleration, your graphics card and driver must support DirectX 12.

Windows 7 SP1 64-bit still has limited support, but can’t take advantage of some performance improvements, such as GPU acceleration, or HEIC file format support.

On macOS, you need 10.13 High Sierra or later to run Lightroom 9.0. To benefit from GPU acceleration, you need macOS 10.14.5 or later and a computer that supports Metal. There’s a list of supported hardware here.

Fill Edges for Panorama Merge

Previously, any missing edges caused by creating a panoramic photo would need either cropping or use of Boundary Warp. Now there’s an additional option, a checkbox called Fill Edges, which works similarly to the Content-Fill Aware in Photoshop.

Export Presets

Many photographers have asked for the Export dialogue to allow multiple exports at the same time. For example, a wedding photographer may want a full resolution set of JPEGs to send to the print lab, a medium resolution screen-sharpened set to give to the bride and groom, and a low resolution watermarked set to upload to an online gallery.

This is now possible using the checkboxes next to presets in the Export dialogue. You can still, of course, simply click the preset you want and export one set of photos.

Additional Filter Options

Folders and Collections can now be filtered by their colour labels (if used). Also, Image has Depth Map has been added to both Metadata Filters and Smart Collection criteria.

Keyword Performance

This has now been improved, especially for photos with lots of keywords applied.

Remove Photos Shortcut

To delete all selected photos in Loupe and Develop views, you can use the new shortcut Shift-Delete instead of having to switch back to Grid view.

Develop Presets

The Export command has returned to the right-click menu so you can easily share your presets with others.

Clear History Above Selected History Step

Have you ever experimented on an already-edited photo, and then decided you preferred the earlier version? In 9.0, you can now right-click on a history state and choose Clear History Above This Step to clear the history states of the failed experiment.

Process Version Auto Update

Any photos currently set to PV3 or PV4 will automatically be updated to the current version (PV5 introduced in 8.0) when you start editing in order to benefit from performance improvements.

Post-Crop Vignette Preview

If GPU acceleration is enabled, the post-crop vignette is visible while cropping.

Tether SDK Update

Nikon Tether SDK is updated to the latest version. This should fix an existing tethering connection issue with the D700 camera. Additionally, new firmware support is included for the D850, Z6 and Z7 cameras. Note that due to an incompatibility between Nikon’s SDK and macOS Catalina, Nikon tethering does not currently work on Catalina.
