Zuka Advent Day 12
⭐ Nijou Hana
Favorite role: Kitty in the God of Stars shinko, she’s mature, cheeky, flirty, and brilliant.
Favorite thing: Because of How Things Work, it’s not so easy to discover standout personalities in young musumeyaku who aren’t fighting for a star track position, but Nijou Hana has one. If you have an Essence that makes me think “ah, perfect” when you’re cast as Yumeki Anru’s role in the shinko, you have something very very right going on.
Dream role: Adelaide! Or something LIKE Adelaide...

May 2021, Kageki, Ayaki Hikari’s “e to bun” translation - or - the one with all the Capulet Information
Okay here it is the Capulet version of Akachan’s e to bun column. Again blah, blah, this is a fun and casual translation (I also did this one like... particularly quickly and on 0 braincells this week so apologies for any typos that hopefully aren’t there!) also please don’t share it taking it as your own translation etc etc. Anyway please enjoy this new information on the Capulets! I’ll be sure to post the third and final edition next month whenever it is available to me. Also, later this month, I will be posting a translation of Hoshigumi’s Romeo and Juliet (2021) backstage talk from this same issue of Kageki!
The Situation in Verona, As I Reveal It - Ayaki Hikari
(title credited to: Iroha Reo)
Hello to all the readers of Kageki. It’s Ayaki, playing the role of Count Paris in “Romeo and Juliet” for the A Cast. This month, I would like to introduce everyone in the Capulet family and ask them the following questions:
(1) Name, (2) Family structure, (3) Is there someone they love? (4) Their favorite point.
I hope you enjoy comparing these answers with last month’s issue.
Otoha Minori: (1) Rebecca (and I like the meaning of the name) (2) Soubu Sakiho is my cousin. But he is like a little brother. (3) I love the whole Capulet family. But I really love Tybalt. (4) I live my life as Rebecca of the Capulets and am very particular about everything in my work. I have a different hairstyle for both A and B schedules so I hope you can see them!
Ooki Makoto: (1) Tigre (2) My sister, from another father, is Murasaki Rira (3) I love my sister the most (4) I’m sure you’ll be able to understand my absolute love and loyalty to my family. It’s not Tybalt’s fault, it’s all Romeo’s fault.
Hiroka Yuu: (1) Leonardo (2) From A Cast, Nijou Hana is my younger sister. From B Cast Mizuno Yuri is my sister. (3) My future love?! Montague Otosaki Itsuki (4) Leonardo means “daring lion” in Italian, so I made my hair blonde and stand up! I hope you can see the sadness I am feeling when I fight with Otosaki in front of the stage.
Murasaki Rira: (1) Sirena (from Sirens in Greek mythology) and I’m 19 years old (2) Half-brother is Ooki Makoto (3) Her brother is her love (4) The Sirens seduce people with their singing voices and lead them to their doom, but I want to do that with my dancing. I want to look different in front of Tybalt and the other Capulets during numbers like during the duel. I believe that a Capulet girl should be more feminine than a Montague girl. So I am conscious of my feminine power on a daily basis.
Toudou Jun: (1) Theo (meaning God’s gift) (3) I have a crush on Miono Saki (4) I am very particular about my hairstyle!
Iroha Reo: (1) Squalo (3) I have a crush on Otoha Minori… (4) My name means “shark,” so I will try to stay sharp every day! Miono Saki: (1) Marta (2) I am an orphan and a childhood friend of Ouri Mao (3) Tybalt (4) I have cut off a lot of my hair for this.
Amaki Homare: (1) Basiglio (nickname Rose) (2) I am the twin of Soubu Sakiho (3) Ouri Mao and I are together and are being targeted by the Montague Minato Rihi (4) Look at my Super Saiyan-like haircut and my high speed turns!
Soubu Sakiho: (1) Mario (2) Otoha Minori is my cousin (3) I like all the girls. My favorite is Murasaki Rira. I’m not aware of my cousin’s love for anyone. (4) You should look for my lift of Hanayuki Rira!
Nanase Miki: (1) Bianca (2) Ouri Mao and I are sisters but I’m older (3) I am always running after Iroha Reo! But, of course, I love all the Capulets! (4) The moment Tybalt is stabbed, I’m trying to make the best scream to keep it realistic.
Ouri Mao: (1) Kiki (2) I am childhood friends with Miono Saki and Nanase Miki is my sister. (3) Amaki Homare (4) What I am interested in is interactions with otokoyaku! I am hoping to produce different results in both A and B patterns.
Akashi Reima (B Cast): (1) Roy (2) Yuuhi Maki is my younger brother, but we aren’t very close. (3) I like Ayazono Hina but she’s too fickle for me. (4) I’m not quick to fight, but I’m overbearing. And I take my hatred out on the Montagues.
Sakuraba Mai (A Cast): (1) Violet (2) I’m a loner with a free spirit (3) I’ll leave that to your imagination (4) I have long black hair and am trying to make my make-up shine.
Nijou Hana (A Cast): (1) Amanda (2) Hiroka Yuu is my brother (3) Sayaka Rin (4) I made my own hair mesh for the first time.
Sayaka Rin (A Cast): (1) Angelo (2) My cousin is Sakishiro Kei, like a younger brother. I am a close blood relative to Tybalt. (3) Sakuraba Mai loves me and thinks she is my girlfriend and Nijou Hana is my fiancee. (4) I love the multifaceted nature of each situation and the hidden true feelings behind everyone’s eyes.
Yuuhi Maki (B Cast): (1) Sol (meaning “sun”) (2) Childhood friends with Ayazono Hina (3) I like Juliet! I’m trying my best to be a man like Tybalt.
Ayazono Hina (B Cast): (1) Hayna (2) Sumika Amane is my sister (3) I am in love with a lot of people including Akashi Reima. I am a childhood friend of Yuuhi Maki and support his love. (4) I have a younger sister, so I’m trying to make her feel important! Sakishiro Kei (A Cast): (1) Thomas (2) Sayaka Rin is my cousin (3) Juliet (4) I have sharp bangs! Miyako Yuuna (A Cast): (1) Kianna (2) I’ve taken the liberty of setting myself as Tybalt’s younger sister. But I let him know already (laughs) (4) I am 15 years old, younger than Juliet! I am a cheerful girl that is full of energy!
Sumika Amane (B Cast): (1) Chiara (to mean “clear”) (2) Ayazono Hina is my sister (3) I like all men except Montague men (4) This is my favorite play.
Mizuno Yuri (B Cast): (1) Sophie (2) Hiroka Yuu’s younger sister (3) Count Paris (4) I am doing my best to be a Capulet woman who is strong, big-hearted, and cute! Please take a look!
There are only a few performances left! So if you can’t make it to the theatre to watch the play, please watch it on video to see how much everyone cares for their roles!

ヨルシカ - 藍二乗 (Ainijou) - Lyrics

An unchanged landscape in the early afternoon Underneath the overpass, i squared; as I lay down a single clap is ringing out for my blank life Today, too, my empty self had sung
Just as I always do, I write the main character’s plot down in my notebook A stopped gas line, world affairs, and the news are all other people’s problems Even this life, you see, is like the ink on the page
By the time I become an adult, the dreams I’ve kept to myself all this time will be forgotten
Even as I just look up to the clouds and my field of view once again drifts away, flowers swim in the distant night I gazed up at so much that I mistake it for springtime As if I’m only going to lose sight of you…
I looked down so I wouldn’t trip Life is so utterly made up of compromises I have no trust in my heart, in fate, in love songs, or in life They’re all worthless if you can’t sell them, anyway
In the created reality of this dream I purposely let show, I lay sprawled out, waiting for time to be up
I just stared at the far off vision of you that I saw in the darkness of my closed eyes Flowers swim in the fading night as in my notes To me, they again merge into one
Life is a series of compromises I’ve known that since long ago Elma, it’s you; you, and only you, are my music
This poem only has 80 words left in it, because your life’s value is based on how you end it
I can picture just and only you as even the indigo in my vision is blurred Flowers swim in the distant night that I gazed up at Two layers of indigo are covering my eyes
It’s just that, it’s just that… In the distant sky that I gazed up upon, you enjoyed the cool air as if you were simply swimming in the night

Both "Egao no Hana" and "Haru ~spring~" will be also featured as the OP/ED theme for the TV
series. The CD singe including both songs is set to be released on January 17, 2018.

haii!! so um not sure what to post but like all i can think of right now is um the correlations between Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta and Elma so um here! have a list of the different ways Elma (the album) references the diary, letters and the album it responds to
(if i miss some let me know please)
and dearest mobile users i will spare you so have a cut
edit: so @just-nonsense-bungaku said some stuff in the replies (thank you so much!) and all the songs after 8/27 (or the Nautilus MV) were written by Elma when her anger lost steam and she started to process her grief. explaining why Ame to, Yuu, Kokoro and Amy sound so different from the style she used (or copied off of Amy) from pre-8/27
and another edit: @teamsavingmyles said some stuff in the rbs, thank you thank you thank you!!! i've been thinking about Yuunagi's references recently cuz i've been working on translating both albums but i never really got around to it so yeah thanks!
edit: i just changed the order of stuff because i forgot well. each song would be written on different days, so for example Koe wouldn't refer to Kokoro, more like Kokoro was inspired by Koe and Yuunagi's metaphor for a hole in the heart
1. 8/31 & 車窓 (Shasou/Train Window)
...they're instrumentals :P (seriously i find no connection)
2. 藍二乗 (Ai Nijou/Deep Indigo) & 憂一乗 (Yuu Ichijou/Only Sorrow)
the concept of i to the power of 2 (and however that relates to Amy's feelings about Elma)
also the first kanji of both titles sound like "i" and "you"
edit: so Ai's chorus' motif is about how blurred the world is, because of Amy's tears, while Yuu's chorus motif is how transparent the world feels to Elma, now that Amy's gone
edit: Yuu takes the phrase "I don't need anything" from Hachigatsu, but for a completely different reason. i think in Hachigatsu, Amy says he doesn't need anything to show his life will ends soon, so like what's the point of anything. in Yuu, Elma says she doesn't need anything besides Amy. she just wants to hear him sing, just one more time (or something)
i mean other than that there isn't much, they sound so different
(like seriously. Ai is like TADA. TADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-- and then Yuu makes suis sound like she's about to cry. dakede *sobbing*)
3. 八月、某、月明かり (Hachigatsu, Bou, Tsukiakari/August, A Certain Place, Moonlight) & 夕凪、某、花惑い (Yuunagi, Bou, Hana Madoi/Evening Calm, A Certain Place, Fireworks)
so first of all both seem to stem from one memory of watching fireworks in the summer (according to a summary of Letters and Diary i read some time ago)
edit: re-reading Diary and it was Memory 17
Yuunagi was the first song Elma wrote, which is why it sounds so similar to Hachigatsu (INTENSE electric guitar, softer at the verses, picks up at the chorus, drops again)
also unrelated note but Hachigatsu is by far the angriest song i can think of. at least by Yorushika
edit: one of the last lines of Yuunagi may be what inspired Kokoro, "In my heart, a hole opens"
Yuunagi also references Ai, in the line "this song has about ___ characters" and the phrase "drowning in flowers" is seen again in Ame to
4. 詩書とコーヒー (Shikaki to Koohii/Songwriting and Coffee) & 雨とカプチーノ (Ame to Kapuchiino/Rain and Cappucino)
...coffee
okay seriously though, both also sound somewhat similar to each other (but from here on out, Elma's developing her own style :DDD)
in both songs they do struggle to keep up with memories of each other, in Shikaki Amy states he forgets things like dreams, things like Elma's mouth and eyes and in Ame to Elma tries not to let anything, literally all of her memories of Amy fade away. (reminds me of the reason why Elma kept a diary for her trip to Sweden)
5. 7/13 & 湖の街 (Mizumi no Machi/Lakeside Town)
...they're also instrumentals
6. 躍ろうぜ (Odorouze/Let's Dance) & 神様のダンス (Kamisama no Dansu/Dance of the Gods)
um the titles have "dance" in them???
not sure really. in Odorouze, Amy pretends everything's fine when he's still struggling with his memories of Elma and depression and whatever and in Kamisama no Dansu Elma is PISSED OFF about the fact that she decided to follow Amy's footsteps considering his values. i mean i don't blame her i don't feel like being told i'd have about a year left to live and just LIVE AND GO DO STUFF and go to Sweden before realizing "dang. i screwed up. can't talk it back now--" *oofs self on some random dock*
oh also a discussion i had w/ nonsense-bungaku on Kamisama has changed my beliefs slightly; Elma is still mad at Amy (and herself) for following his path and beliefs but she's also kind of done trying to create music with "value" and "purpose", just creating music because it's fun, because the process of creating music is something one can derive joy from
edit: Kamisama does take a line, "名もない花が綺麗とか" ("Nameless flowers are beautiful") and a slightly altered version of the line "そんなのどうでもいいから" ("I couldn't care any less about that", being "どうでもいいことばっかだ" meaning the same thing) from Yoru Magai
Kamisama also references Yoru Magai in the lines "I keep my head down, like I'm scared" because in the verses of Yoru, in the fifth lines, Amy talks about keeping his head down, so he can't see how blue the sky is or so he doesn't understand everyone's feelings.
another unrelated note, Kamisama no Dansu is still freaking good. not that it wasn't good before but like there's something about it that i really like and would talk about until i fainted from loss of oxygen.
7. 六月和雨上がりの街を書く (Rokugatsu wa Ameagari no Machi wo Kaku/In June, I'll Write About the Town After the Rain) & 雨晴るる (Ame Haruru/After The Rain)
first of all, both of them are about rain (astute observation. round of applause.)
i do think it's really cool how Amy says he'd write about the rain in the town he stayed at but never stayed long enough to write about it, so Elma does it for him. also Elma's style has changed from where she was before, like say, Yuunagi or Koe
also Rokugatsu references Ai Nijou and may be what inspired the creation of Parade
edit: both Ame and Rokugatsu talk about this "ultramarine" which, at least to me, in Rokugatsu refers to the whole memories and the window and in Ame Ha it refers to tears
Ame Ha also references Gogatsu with the swaying curtains, and *potentially* references Hachigatsu in the line "my heartbeat rung out". potentially. if i'm looking too deep and they aren't related don't yell at me
8. 五月は花緑青の窓辺から (Gogatsu wa Hana Rokushou no Madobe Kara/In May, from the Emerald Green Window) & 歩く (Aruku/Walk)
again, not sure how these correlate. though i like how Aruku's chorus is a slowed down version of Gogatsu's chorus.
edit: ...how i didn't notice this i will never know. the frikking Emerald Green/tears metaphor.
Aruku also talks about feeling "asleep", where Elma (as she said in Ame Ha) plays dumb and pretends not to know Amy would die early cuz chronic illness and moveth to foreign country (though Amy did grow up there) and unhealthy mental state. this song and Koe also talk about Elma hating herself for doing so, but Elma and Nautilus think that her playing dumb was pretty endearing
both songs also have this feeling of being "trapped", where Amy feels trapped in this life, and the only way out is Emerald Green, while Elma got left behind and is now stuck looking for at least scraps of the person she loves through these streets
Aruku also potentially references Yoru Magai in the way Elma imitates Amy by keeping her head down, the same way as Kamisama
9. 夜紛い (Yoru Magai/False Night) & 心に穴が空いた (Kokoro ni Ana ga Aita/A Hole Opened Up in My Heart)
i think it's cool how Yoru's main and last line is "I want to open up a hole in you" and then Kokoro's is like "That's why a hole has opened up in my heart" like HOWWWWW HOW MUST YOU HURT ME LIKE THAT
also Kokoro's third line references the song it responds to, as well as Letters 6/26, "a false night, like twilight, painted the town"
also another unrelated note KOKORO NI ANA GA AITA IS JUST SO SAD AND PAINFUL. LIKE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LET ME CRY
edit: how none of you said this gets me. um the line "君だけが僕の音楽なんだよ"、 エイミー ("You alone were my music", Amy) is literally from Ai Nijou (i mean i guess it was too obvious but whatever i'll put that in)
10. 5/6 & 森の教会 (Mori no Kyoukai/Church in the Forest)
more. instrumental.
11. パレード (Parade) & 声 (Koe/Voice)
both incorporate the concept of the God of Art which i think is cool
both are lyrically short
Koe references Yoru in the line "this heavy life is like a machine gun" and may have alluded to the metaphor from Yuunagi - in the line "what I want to draw/picture is the time that hollowed my heart" (and maybe a part of a line got re-used in Ame to Kapuchiino?? does the line "when I cry, it overflows” count???)
Koe also sounds like Parade, just in the key C#, not D
edit: in Letters 7/13, Amy said Parade was Koe
another edit: Parade is the song about the God of Art, right??? well i read @saikisser 's post on how FREAKING SAD PARADE IS AND LISTENING TO IT WITH CONTEXT MAKES IS EVEN SADDER and well Amy also thinks Elma is divine to him (because she's the one that sings the lyrics the God of Art managed to find in his fingers)
also another unrelated note but listen to Parade it's such a beautiful song i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee ittttttttttttttttt
12. エルマ (Elma) & エイミー (Amy)
awwwwww the non-depressing songs!!! i love them sm
um they're messages directly to each other
both were the last songs each other wrote in the story
they both sound sweet and Kumo to Yuurei-esque, but slightly more upbeat (basically just similar to each other)
yeah i love those songs they're the only happy ones by Yorushika i can think of besides Haru Dorobou (which is just SPRING :DDD oooo flowers!!! they're pretty!!!)
anyways.
13. 4/10 & 海底、月明かり (Kaitei, Tsukiakari/Seabed, Moonlight)
another. instrumental. (dw this is the last instrumental)
aaaaaaaand the last one. the one we've been waiting for.
14. だから僕は音楽をやめた (Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta/That's Why I Gave Up On Music) & ノーチラス (Nautilus)
so they were both featured at the end of their journeys. (Amy oofs himself on the dock, Elma finds his stuff a year later and cries before going home on a ship like a month later but in that month there's like no lore whatsoever so it's kind of an epilogue???)
Dakara Boku mainly is just. looking at whatever happened back then and how much Amy regrets whatever he did in Letters. he wishes he stayed with Elma cuz then he'd have a bit longer to live but well i guess he really isn't going to make it past the summer. also screaming. aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--
i will say Nautilus was also written by Amy, because at the literal end (just before he wrote Elma, i think. he doesn't write when he says goodbye in Letters and Diary obviously doesn't state when it was written because well Elma doesn't know) he was going about his day before realizing the day he runs out of ink draws nearer and nearer. and he hasn't even considered how Elma felt/would feel after he's gone so he wrote Nautilus as a way to say "it will be hard, but turn away from me and lift your head to the future" and that makes me cry even harder like NOOOO I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE YOU HERE BUT ALSO I CAN'T TAKE YOU WITH ME CUZ YOU TOOK THE BUS TO THE OTHER WORLD CYA

Who are the understudies for Monte Cristo? Where do we find the information?
They haven’t been announced actually! They might even still be figuring it out 😅
Disclaimer: I haven’t seen Monte Cristo and I don’t know who is onstage at the same time as whom, BUT I think in general the biggest candidates to be understudies are Yuunagi Ryou (for Amahana??), Amaki Homare (for Ayaki??), and maaaybe Soubu Sakiho? I could also see Haruto Yuuho keeping her role + taking Ooki Makoto’s too or something like that. Kisa Kaoru, Yuuhi Maki, and Kishou Kazuto could be understudies as well.
I’m personally pulling for Ouka Rurina to sub for Nijou Hana (and Houma Toa to get literally any more lines than she would have otherwise)
EDIT: they announced them!

hi I just discovered this post and AHHHHHH I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE YORUSHIKA DISCUSSIONS!! just wanted to add some brainworms because man. these 2 albums destroy me. general references to song + diary translation is this doc for Dakara Boku and this one for Elma .
藍二乗 (Ai Nijou) & 憂一乗 (Yuu Ichijou)
it's probably immensely obvious but the fact that Yuu Ichijou's main chorus motif is how transparent the world feels (like water lilies) with Amy gone VS. how Ai Nijou's main chorus motif is the blurring sight of the sky implied to be from Amy's tears-- I am in pain.
八月、某、月明かり (Hachigatsu, Bou, Tsukiakari) & 夕凪、某、花惑い (Yuunagi, Bou, Hana Madoi)
I just really want to gush about Yuunagi, Bou, Hana Madoi because it has so much allusions to the other songs??
The lyrical technique of saying "oh there are __ words left to this song" (verse 1) is evidently inspired by Ai Nijou and is later repeated in the song Amy.
the theme of flowers swimming and being "lost in a flowery gust" (chorus 2) is also a thought Elma revisits in Ame to Cappuccino.
and like you've mentioned, there's the "hole in my heart" thought too :((
[putting a read more because man. I rambled a lot about Rokugatsu hasdjf]
六月和雨上がりの街を書く (Rokugatsu wa Ameagari no Machi wo Kaku/) & 雨晴るる (Ame Haruru)
apart from the rain motif, there's also a recurring notion of gunjou 群青 (rokugatsu verse 1 + ame haruru choruses) translated as the "ultramarine" which both describes the aesthetic of the rain and carries a specific memory for Amy and Elma. Personally, I think its about Memory 5 where they go to a public hall and play the piano whenever it rains. UGH there's just so much longing to go back to those days:
Rokugatsu
"I can only see you within these memories / In the summer of the June rain"
"i scribble down even your smiling face / I gouge my heart out" WHAT THE HELL
Ame Haruru
"Always you, the color of love never disappears"
"Songs of love that never turn cold" HELLO??
Given the big love drop in Ame Haruru (although I mean the sheer tenderness in Rokugatsu makes it a strong reading), the "swaying white curtains" Introduced in Ame Haruru seem a pivotal turning moment for them to fall in love with one another.
"A white curtain swayed / It swayed softly.../ swaying love" (chorus 2 and chorus 3)
Interestingly, it's Gogatsu, not Rokugatsu, that mentions the white curtains:
"In an empty classroom, the curtain was swaying.../ There, I was watching the sky together with you / That summer will never cease to be in my mind." (verse 1)
I'm not sure if the empty summer classroom scene is within the same public hall but regardless it's a pretty important memory to be associated with love in Ame Haruru. interestingly the idea of a classroom-like public hall + piano + white curtains is shown in Haru Dorobou/Spring Thief MV haha let's not get into reincarnation theory today
五月は花緑青の窓辺から (Gogatsu wa Hana Rokushou no Madobe Kara) & 歩く (Aruku)
Paris green is also introduced in Gogatsu and expounded on in the Letters to Elma, and it's repeated in Aruku as not a literal object but as a similar feeling in verse 2
"Writing songs that only mourn / Paris green trickles down my cheeks"
which ummm. uh oh. the frequent questioning of life purpose throughout Walk ("Today I had the thought I am dying" Vs. Today I had a fancy I am living") does not Help. Both Gogatsu and Aruku are really cries for help---Amy feels trapped and thinks the only way out is to drink the Paris green poison while Elma is just going through the motions desperately searching for any trace of him in these foreign streets
Aruku also introduces 2 major motifs for Elma's story arc: being "asleep" and the hill motif. Im trying to condense my rambling as much as possible so here's just a rundown of my thoughts about it
being "asleep" or ignorant/unaware is something Elma deeply faults herself for, as Amy suffered alone in a foreign land even though she did have an inkling on his heart (and fragile mental) condition. Aruku and Voice/Koe show a lot of her self-loathing about that, while Elma and Nautilus have Amy counter that, seeing her sleepiness (both literal and figurative IMO) as something endearing T-T
the other motif, the Hill, is huge for the bits of hope we long for in these 2 albums. Aruku introduced Elma seeing Amy on a hill waiting for her, though she's uncertain how he'll react to her arrival. Nautilus reframes that to be one of the most heartbreaking and at the same time comforting images in Yorushika's discography:
There you are on a hill, laughing "It's been a while"
As you bring your face closer to mine
And say, "let's go together"
ONE DAY... ONE DAY THEY WILL BE REUNITED. And everything will be okay, then.
***
andddd that's about it for my rambling I think I've spoken too much (even though I want to ramble about Elma the song and Elma the character's story arc so much) 😭 Elma and Amy's story makes me so emotional, both just from the premise of two artists SPEAKING to each other with their art never fails to move me and how n-buna and suis craft their story so beautifully. love yorushika so much
haii!! so um not sure what to post but like all i can think of right now is um the correlations between Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta and Elma so um here! have a list of the different ways Elma (the album) references the diary, letters and the album it responds to
(if i miss some let me know please)
and dearest mobile users i will spare you so have a cut
edit: so @just-nonsense-bungaku said some stuff in the replies (thank you so much!) and all the songs after 8/27 (or the Nautilus MV) were written by Elma when her anger lost steam and she started to process her grief. explaining why Ame to, Yuu, Kokoro and Amy sound so different from the style she used (or copied off of Amy) from pre-8/27
edit: i just changed the order of stuff because i forgot well. each song would be written on different days, so for example Koe wouldn't refer to Kokoro, more like Kokoro was inspired by Koe and Yuunagi's metaphor for a hole in the heart
1. 8/31 & 車窓 (Shasou/Train Window)
...they're instrumentals :P (seriously i find no connection)
2. 藍二乗 (Ai Nijou/Deep Indigo) & 憂一乗 (Yuu Ichijou/Only Sorrow)
the concept of i to the power of 2 (and however that relates to Amy's feelings about Elma)
also the first kanji of both titles sound like "i" and "you"
i mean other than that there isn't much, they sound so different
4. 詩書とコーヒー (Shikaki to Koohii/Songwriting and Coffee) & 雨とカプチーノ (Ame to Kapuchiino/Rain and Cappucino)
...coffee
okay seriously though, both also sound somewhat similar to each other (Elma's slowly developing her own style though :DDD)
in both songs they do struggle to keep up with memories of each other, in Shikaki Amy states he forgets things like dreams, things like Elma's mouth and eyes and in Ame to Elma tries not to let anything, literally all of her memories of Amy fade away. (reminds me of the reason why Elma kept a diary for her trip to Sweden)
5. 7/13 & 湖の街 (Mizumi no Machi/Lakeside Town)
...they're also instrumentals
6. 躍ろうぜ (Odorouze/Let's Dance) & 神様のダンス (Kamisama no Dansu/Dance of the Gods)
um the titles have "dance" in them???
not sure really. in Odorouze, Amy pretends everything's fine when he's still struggling with his memories of Elma and depression and whatever and in Kamisama no Dansu Elma is PISSED OFF about the fact that she decided to follow Amy's footsteps considering his values. i mean i don't blame her i don't feel like being told i'd have about a year left to live and just LIVE AND GO DO STUFF and go to Sweden before realizing "dang. i screwed up. can't talk it back now--" *oofs self on some random dock*
oh also a discussion i had w/ nonsense-bungaku on Kamisama has changed my beliefs slightly; Elma is still mad at Amy (and herself) for following his path and beliefs but she's also kind of done trying to create music with "value" and "purpose", just creating music because it's fun, because the process of creating music is something one can derive joy from
another unrelated note, Kamisama no Dansu is still freaking good. not that it wasn't good before but like there's something about it that i really like and would talk about until i fainted from loss of oxygen.
9. 夜紛い (Yoru Magai/False Night) & 心に穴が空いた (Kokoro ni Ana ga Aita/A Hole Opened Up in My Heart)
i think it's cool how Yoru's main line is "I want to open up a hole in you" and then Kokoro's is like "That's why a hole has opened up in my heart" like HOWWWWW HOW MUST YOU HURT ME LIKE THAT
also Kokoro's third line references the song it responds to, as well as Letters 6/26, "a false night, like twilight, painted the town"
also another unrelated note KOKORO NI ANA GA AITA IS JUST SO SAD AND PAINFUL. LIKE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LET ME CRY
edit: how none of you said this gets me. um the line "君だけが僕の音楽なんだよ"、 エイミー ("You alone were my music", Amy) references Ai Nijou (i mean i guess it was too obvious but whatever i'll put that in)
10. 5/6 & 森の教会 (Mori no Kyoukai/Church in the Forest)
more. instrumental.
14. だから僕は音楽をやめた (Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta/That's Why I Gave Up On Music) & ノーチラス (Nautilus)
so they were both featured at the end of their journeys (Amy oofs himself on the dock, Elma finds his stuff a year later and cries before going home on a ship like a month later but in that month there's like no lore whatsoever so it's kind of an epilogue???)
i will say Nautilus was also written by Amy, because at the literal end (just before he wrote Elma, i think. he doesn't write when he says goodbye in Letters and Diary obviously doesn't state when it was written because well Elma doesn't know) he was going about his day before realizing the day he runs out of ink draws nearer and nearer. and he hasn't even considered how Elma felt/would feel after he's gone so he wrote Nautilus as a way to say "it will be hard, but turn away from me and lift your head to the future" and that makes me cry even harder like NOOOO I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE YOU HERE BUT ALSO I CAN'T TAKE YOU WITH ME CUZ YOU TOOK THE BUS TO THE OTHER WORLD CYA
and that's it for the albums! =w=
*pathetic bowing*
#yorushika#song analysis#kind of???#its just my english major coming out atp#music#elma#that's why i gave up on music
