The Niji-iro Siblings

Hanami Sakura and Niji-iro Tetsu were married in Kasai, the Minkai Empire, in the year 4698 AR. Together, they had eleven children.

The bombing of the Minkan Embassy in Absalom separated Midori from the others. With news reports announcing that there were no survivors from the terrorist attack, Midori believed that her siblings had perished, and her siblings believed the same about her.

However, all of the siblings actually did survive to the current day.

Tasogare no Hauringu 黄昏のハオリング

Music and lyrics by Imai Hisashi

I think there has been some sentiment among some (certainly not all) fans that Imai's headstrong optimism and push forward can sometimes seem cold. I have long suspected that's more of a cultural clash, as in the west, a man who doesn't shed tears is doing it to keep a "stiff upper lip" because of the underlying belief that emotion is weakness (except for anger, of course). However, while forms of toxic masculinity do exist in the east as well, you're just as, if not more, likely to run into a motive to keep everyone together, and to not shed your own tears so as not to spread sadness further. I always felt such was Imai's motivation, especially after his tender speech at the 2023 Genshou performance.

I had been thinking that I wish Imai would show his sorrow a bit more. I think it's a vulnerability fans need to touch as much as for his own message of "Be Happy" as for the validation of their own tears. After all, if the man who can find contentment in this hell can also mourn, than can't we who mourn also be able to find contentment?

If there was any remaining concern that Imai might not be capable of tears, publicly or privately, this song blasts them out of the waters.

The Twilight Howling

Tasogare, as a modern term, refers to the time between sunset and night. An older version of the same word, tasokare, refers to the time of night when it has just become too dark to clearly see others' faces. In the Chinese zodiac counting of the day, it falls during the "hour of the dog" (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) when he takes his place to guard the gate.

While Japanese has many words for dusk or twilight, tasogare specifically also has a colloquial use as an expression of melancholy or nostalgia. As with twilight in English, it can refer to one's "twilight years."

Though I wouldn't say it necessarily applies to this song, but it does to the rest of the album, tasogare can also be used metaphorically to mean that, while the brightest time is past, there is still enough light worth pushing a little further.

And there in just the title alone we have a coming darkness, the inability to see the face of even a friend, the loyal guardian, melancholy, nostalgia, physical decline in aging, and the drive to continue regardless. Now on to the lyrics themselves...

Okay, so, I'm already a hot, sobbing, facial tissue-consuming mess; how is everyone else???

Right off the bat, we know the album has been leading up to this song from the very cover. The aurora as not simply a visual metaphor, but here a lyrical one, specifically the parade that Acchan has ascended to, and the one we all will eventually join.

Narratively, the lyrics here are less clear, but I'm inclined to see it as the end of humanity, that we as a species as much as we as individuals will leave nothing but a memory, with nature returning to take her place where our cities once stood.

More metaphoric descriptions of the aurora as the place where Acchan and all other beloved souls must be.

In 2018, Sakurai Atsushi completed a performance in very obvious pain. After apologizing to the audience for not performing his best, he was rushed to hospital, where he was found to be bleeding internally from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage. While in recovery, he penned Kemonotachi no Yoru, ("Our Night" with "our" meaning "we beasts"). A few lyrics near the end of that song imply his promise, for the sake of his fans, to never leave the stage: "Dance for me, Pierrot / Tonight you stay on that stage till the end" (trans. by Cayce). If such was Acchan's intention, then it was in this song that he predicted his own death.

Kemonotachi ("we beasts") here means as much the remaining members of the band as the entire fandom, and "under the rose," the literal translation of "subrosa," the Latin meaning "done in secret," is the unique connection we share, having loved so dearly the one we all lost together.

Using the base noun "song" twice would probably be the more natural choice, if only to avoid the repeating continuous -ing form, which is not as it appears in the Japanese.

There's also an implication that what we the audience hear as music, and have heard throughout this album, has actually been the sorrowful cries of a lonely pack this whole time.

黄昏のハウリング　哭いている　咆えている tasogare no hauringu　naiteiru　hoeteiru

This line has two translations. If you're just listening to the lyrics, you might assume naiteiru and hoeteiru are 泣いている and 吠えている, which are the common characters used for those words, leading a listener(-only) to hear:

the twilight howling, crying, howling

with the second howling being the typical Japanese word for the howl of animals. However, with the very specific and uncommon characters used, the meaning is closer to:

the twilight howling, wailing, yowling

While the common "crying" with 泣 very simply means "crying" with no particular nuance, the "crying" with 哭 is a noisy cry, a wail, a sob. It implies uncontrolled emotions and a demand to be heard.

Likewise 咆 can mean "howling" like its common counterpart, 吠, but this roar, this howl, has a distinct undertone of violence, anger, or rage. There is no good direct translation for this one in English. Any word animalistic enough isn't dangerous enough. Any word dangerous enough isn't animalistic enough.

Harkening back to the previous line of "sounding like a song but (is actually) howling" we have a line that sounds like simple "crying, howling" but is actually far more gut-wrenching and unleashed.

From here on out, we repeat the previous lyrics:

This song is only ever so slightly slower than Mudai and follows a similar chord progression. Sakurai has never clearly revealed what he intended for Mudai's message to be, but personally, I'm inclined to see it as the horror and confusion of being brought into existence—a trauma many of us never really recover from—and the inclination to pursue the darkness that once felt safe. From darkness we come and to darkness we go.

Even without interpretation, the theme of birth in the song is obvious. How poetic then, to end the album mourning Sakurai's passing with such an homage to it, reminding us that death and birth are part of a (painful) cycle.

After lyrics such as these, the sound of Imai's guitar ends on the same tones as ended Mudai, more discordant, more painful. A furious and heartrending howl you would almost mistake for a song.

As usual, I will explain cultural background, context, literal translation and something more than just Google can teach you!

Civilian Name Translation and Explanation

犬飼 (Inukai)

As we have noticed, both Komugi and Iroha shares the same last name!

Inukai in general, can be literally translated to "Dog Keeper"

Inu 犬　simply means "Dog"

Kai 飼　is a character commonly use when you talk about keeping a pet. The word "飼" itself means to feed animals and to nurture life.

So when you put the two characters 犬飼 together. We can see the meaning is more or less "Dog keeper", or even more literal translation, "Dog Feeder / Dog Nurturer"

Extra info: The word 飼 is composed of the word EATING (食) and it's a character with heavy meaning of food and feeding.

Komugi こむぎ

Komugi simply means wheat. It's a very common pet name in Japan!

Iroha いろは

Without the Kanji, it's actually quite hard to tell what Iroha means, BUT! Iroha is actually a common girl name and it means "Colorful leaves" or "Colorful feathers"

You might have heard the words Niji-iro (虹色) or Iroiro (色々)

Iro (色) itself means "Color", but when it's used in the name Iroha, it turns into 彩, which is still pronounced IRO, but it means COLORFUL.

With Cure Friendy's Catchphrase being "A world colored by everyone's smile! Cure Friendy! Let me hear your voice", I am quite certain Iroha's name is about colors.

We will probably never know what the "HA" part means without the kanji. Ha is more commonly "leaves". It could be "feathers". Even "flowers"

The word IROHA does have the meaning "The basics, the fundamentals", and without the kanji, we will never know if the name is trying to play with some puns or what not.

But when the name IROHA is placed on a girl, it 99% means "colorful-(something)"

Tbh I would love to hear about your world building it's my favorite thing ever and I love apocalypse things

What are the factions? What's the map? What type of apocalypse was it? I'm curious 😅😅

Hey there! Sure I can tell you about it!

So my world has a cyberpunk-postapocalyptic style, since the apocalypse happend far in the future and the post-apocalyptic world has completely new cultures, races and norms from the old world.

So to start off with, everything takes place in the "real world" so to say, all the world history is tecnically the same, but the beginning of the story takes place in the year around ~2300 so almost 300 years in the future. Accordingly the world evolved; but it develops into a distopian future. About 95% of the world is overpopulated by humans at this point, there aren't many clean ressources left and practically everything runs on atomic energy. There are huge issues with most occupations being run by robots which have been developed to a point where they are barely distinguishable from humans. So most of the human population suffers from poverty and starvation. The few people at the top of it all, mainly the rich, the world leaders and scientists, are the only ones who don't suffer from the consequences of human action. The world also has been through several wars, and currently there is another world war taking place, exhausting what little resources where left, all at the costs of the less fortunare.

I'll skip over that part of the story and go to the lore of the apocalypse; esentially there was a mad scientist, the smartest man in the world; Kasai Kuroiwa, who decided he has wants to save the world by giving it "worthy leaders".

So he began to abduct and experiment on people, those with unusual abilities, wheither they where incredibly talented, fought for the right of the people, those with unusual intelligence or strength. Whatever he seemed fitting. Eventually he had 27 subjects he abducted. And 3 more that where personal to him. And he wanted to give them superhuman abilities to make them the new world leaders.

But in oder to create these Lords he had to use an immense ammount of radioactive energy. Well, he knew what that meant, the amount of energy required will cause a Fallout and most likely destroy the entire world with its blast. But he was willing to take that risk. To create an entirely new world with leaders he seemed fitting.

So that is how the apocalpyse happened, it destroyes the majority of life on earth. Some people where save in bunkers, others who somehow survived the blast became heavily mutated. It took about 50 years before anyone could leave the bunkers without immediately dying from radiation poisoning, but once the remaining humanity could set foot on the outside world again, they where confronted by the Lords. These 30 people who now gained superhuman abilities and immortality.

The people started worshipping them as a form of diety, their saviours who would fix the world. And the lords shared parts of their powers with their devoted followers, which over the years created different races for each Lord. And the Lords each ruled different parts of the world, creating new cities and cultures.

However, there are only 29 races. Because one of the Lords, Flare, who is the main character of the story, couldn't figure out what his ability is, therefore people never worshipped him and he has been forgotten, now he lives in hiding.

Some examples of the Lords are:

Niji-Iro the Lord of color; he is the weakest lord and his ability is to alter the color of any material, therefore influence the light and wavelenghts that let us see colours.

Armitox the Lord of poison; somewhat self explanatory he can create any type of poison he desires.

Roon the Lord of Gravity; he has the ability to influence earths gravity field, and he can survive in space, which is why he and his whorsippers have a settlement in space.

Very important story-wise are the Lord of War, Guerra, and the Lord of Peace, Pax.

And the most powerful Lord of them all is the Lord of Metal. Noone knows who he really is, neither do they know his name. He sealed himself away and never showed himself to anyone. But the people of his race, the Metalmakers, are the strongest race and close to being immortal, they can die several times and come back to life, their limbs regenerate as metal if harmed, so most of them are Cyborgs. And all of them recieve a special power at some point in their life that fits to their first death; for example one my important characters Dakari has gasoline in his blood and fire practically dosen't harm him, because he died once by bloodloss.

Next to the Lords there are the Representatives. These are people chosen by the Lord to represent them infront of the people and they share the peoples whishes and desires with their Lord; they're sort of a political figure. Each Lord has only one Representative and they also hold councils with each other to keep up worldpeace.

The world is very much drawn by the post-apocalypic effects. The entire world is poluted by radiation, and dangerous mutated creatures roam the eath, but the people build up a resistence thanks to their Lords sharing their powers. Not all people have the same radioactive resistance, for example a Metalmaker can wander whereever they'd like to, whereas a Colormaker couldn't do that because certain areas have too much radiation for them to survive.

Certain areas, for example the entirery of North America, where the Fallout originated from, is barren wasteland and inhabitable for everyone except Metalmakers. On the other hand, the capital city of the world is named Arcavain City and it is located in central Europe. There is less radiation and all people of all races can go there. It is run by the council of Representatives. It is a stunning multi-cultural metropolis. This is where the World Trading Organisation is located, with Rae as its CEO. Everyone can buy and sell wares there. Many mercenaries, researchers, and adventurers earn their money that way. There is no physical money, it has been replaced by digital credits, a new, universal currency that has been created by the Lords.

When it comes to other effects of the apocalypse, many people are mutated in various ways. For example colours of hair, eyes and skin can come in many variations, also sometimes dependend on the race of the person. For example most Gravitymakers have unique purple eyes, most Peacemakers have white hair etc. Some have animalistic features, some are Ghoul-ish, some have horns or other mutations.

There has been peace for almost 200 years now, however, the Lord of war now declared war against all the other Lords, as she desires to take full control over it, and her two sons, Lucho and Malphas, should become the ultimate rulers of the world, more powerful than the Lords have ever been. Guerra is one of the highest ranking Lords, therefore most of the other Lords had no choice but to submit to her rulership in order to protect their people. The only Lord who could defeat her with ease is the Lord of Metal. But he keeps himself locked away. However, because of that the Warmakers intend to rid the world of all the Metalmakers as they see them as an obsticle to total power.

Meanwhile Guerra has prioritized finding Flare; the remaining Lord who's power is unknown to the world and himself. Because she figured out what his it truly is. And he should assist her in her plan to rule the world, in exchange he will recieve something he never had; people worshipping and acknowledgeing him. Because Flares power is to steal the abilities of other Lords and use them himself, meaning if he'd take everyone elses powers and use them combined he might be strong enough to be on the same level as the Lord of Metal... But who is he really?

There is a lot of lore and worldbuilding, I will definetly share more of it over time, but this is the basic concept of the world!

Niji-iro Tōgarashi

Niji-iro Tetsu and Hanami Sakura were married in Kasai, Minkai Empire, in the year 4698. Together, they had eleven children. To honor her children, Sakura developed a family recipe for a zesty spice blend that she dubbed "Niji-iro tōgarashi" (literally "rainbow chili pepper"), made up of an ingredient corresponding to each child. This spice blend is the secret ingredient in Sakura's famous kitsune udon and is versatile enough to use on beef, chicken, seafood, onigiri, and a variety of other dishes.

3 Tbsp red chili flakes (Akane)

2 Tbsp dried orange peel (Orenji)

2 Tbsp nori (Haiiro)

2 tsp white sesame seeds (Shiro)

2 tsp black sesame seeds (Kuro)

2 tsp red Sichuan/sansho peppercorns (Pinku)

1 tsp green Sichuan/sansho peppercorns (Midori)

1 tsp ginger powder (Kiiro)

1 tsp poppy seeds (Mizuiro)

1 tsp hemp seeds or flax seeds (Chairo)

1 tsp shiso powder (Murasaki)

Toast the peppercorns and seeds until fragrant. Add the rest of the ingredients and toast quickly. Cool, then coarsely grind together with a mortar and pestle (or in one of those new-fangled spice grinders).

Keep in an airtight container. The flavors will degrade over time, so plan to use it all within the month.

2024 Media: 61. Precure All Stars DX3: Mirai ni Todoke! Sekai wo Tsunagu☆Niji-iro no Hana (2011) - 8/10★ Umm I DID tear up actually, so it gets extra points for that lmao. I loved that the comic relief group had my girl Kurumi in it because their group was the most entertaining and definitely got the best treatment in this movie so I'm perhaps bias because of that. It had barely any casual hanging out time between the girls this time so I can't give it higher points though!
