Red Bean Cake: they are pretty popular street food in Taiwan, I tried them at the Fo Guang Shan Monastery (this space only has vegetarian cafes &restaurants) They cook in a special cast iron pan. The batter is really similar to a waffle -pancake batter. (In the first place the dessert is from Japan and is called Imagawayaki or Obanyaki). A lady at the monastery informed me that they are very popular with children and are called 'car wheel cakes'. These circular shaped cakes are crispy on the outside and filled with a traditional sweetened red bean paste filling. I also tried strawberry custard filling one. The method to cook them was fun and easy, the pancake like mix is placed into the hot plate making contraptions. When they are nearly done, the filling is placed in the center. One pancake is then overlaid with another pancake and the two meld together. Missing the weather of Taipei right now to fulfill my craving for The Legendary Mango shaved Ice #baobing. #🍧 It's a dessert that was supposedly invited at the Shiloh Night Market. The shaved ice is available with a variety of toppings, but most prefer fresh mango when in season. Mangoes in Taiwan are said to be among some of the best in the world. But then I am Indian ;) What sets Taiwanese shave ice apart is the fluffy snow like quality of the ice and the way ice falls into sheets. If the soupy goodness of the fruit and ice cream weren't enough, the symbolic cherry on top is a generous slathering of sweetened condensed milk. If you have plans to visit Taiwan do try this dessert! Taiwanese Dessert: Taro/Sweet Potato Balls : It can be found in almost every part in Taiwan, among which Jiufen's taro ball is said to be the most famous. Taiwanese Pineapple Cakes are one of Taiwan's best food souvenirs. Usually square shaped, it has a buttery , shortbread like casing with a pineapple filling similar to a very thick jam.
