PART THREE FINALLY HEHEH @shattered-glasswork @forthetaintedgay @pjo-hoo-toa-freakazoid @ilyoctavian HERE YOU GUYS :]] btw thank you Shattered my bestie pookie babes/p for the idea :DDDDD ILYSM/p
Percy finally went back to his room and the rest of the day went as normal. Breakfast, auguries(for Octavian), training, lunch, etc. During dinner, Octavian couldn't help but notice a certain son of the sea god was missing a certain blue teddy bear that a certain 10-year-old gave him.
So he went over to Percy.
"AHEM." Octavian declared. "Where on earth is your teddy?!" Percy looked around at his stuff. "Shit..." He whispered. Octavian crossed his arms and tapped his foot. "Perseus Jackson. Where is your teddy."
"Uhhhh...." Percy frantically kept looking and finally gave up, looking at the child and clearing his throat. "I have... absolutely no idea, Tavi."
"Octavian."
Percy rolled his eyes. Octavian glared at him. Percy fixed his attitude. "Fine. Octavian, I have absolutely no idea where the bear is." Percy grumbled.
Silence. Then, suddenly...
"PERSEUS JACKSON, HOW COULD YOU?! I GAVE YOU THE TEDDY TO KEEP. YOU LOST HIM?!" Octavian screamed. Percy panicked and looked around. Everyone's eyes were wide, except Reyna, who just facepalmed.
"U-uhhhhh—!" Percy cleared his throat and laughed nervously. "Uhh... O-Octavian, don't scre—"
"NO! YOU LOST YOUR BEAR!"
Percy sighed and stood up. "Octavian. You can't—"
"YOU LOST THE BEAR THAT I GAVE YOU. I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS. HOW COULD YOU?!"
Percy swallowed. "Look, bud... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. What if we look for it together, yeah?"
In the middle of screaming in Latin about how Percy ruined it and how Greeks ruin everything and how upset he was he paused and rolled his eyes. "Fine. Only if you carry me."
"Okay bud."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, that was it! Part four?? And I need a name for the bear.
AU where Everything in HoO is the same but Octavian is a 10 year old
The moment Percy became Praetor, Reyna made him incharge of babysitting the lil prophecy lad, cuz she needed a break and Percy didn’t know what he was getting himself into.
thought this would be funny XD
|ᯓ ᡣ𐭩Sick Days|
ᡣ𐭩 Sick Alaric x Venus
[Timeline: Venus and Alaric's 2nd year at Oakenshield]
His body was on fire, his head was filled with so many thoughts that it hurt, and as much as Alaric wanted to fight Emmitt's orders, he knew that Emmitt would continue to persist so he decided on surrendering and is now lying in bed with a damp towel over his forehead. His vision was getting blurry as the tiredness crept in. Before he could nod off to sleep, Alaric heard a familiar set of footsteps enter his room.
"Venus?-" The demon tried to speak, but ended up in a fit of coughs. He was quite surprised when Venus had entered the room, and tried to sit up, despite feeling the aches across his body.
"Hey!..." The fae scolded as she made a swift motion with her hand, pushing her magic into the demon in an attempt to make him feel better.
Alaric could feel Venus' magic coating him like a cool blanket as he felt even more tired. Alaric was barely holding onto consciousness as Venus tried to sooth him with her magic.
"Sleep for now, we can always talk later," Venus shushed Alairc, before closing the door behind her and walking towards his desk. Despite how much Alaric wanted to protest, his eyelids were getting heavy, and his heart was repeatedly telling him to trust the fae.
As Venus explored Alaric's room, she couldn't help but feel as if she was in her childhood bedroom again. She was being covered by a sense of tranquility. 'I never thought his room would be this light.. Certainly not expected as he's a demon...' Venus wondered as her eyes focused on a shelf, which was full of family photos. A snicker escaped her as Venus recognized what looked like a baby Alaric covered with mud.
The fae soon started to feel guilty for peeking and shuffled to the demon's desk once more. She softly sat down and started to go through his papers. This is something Venus would have felt guilty about if she hadn't been assigned to help him with his work. As much as she wanted to curse God for making her the demon's nanny, she really was glad that Alaric was okay.
—
Alaric opened his eyes to find a green-haired fae sleeping by his side. When he processed that, his face quickly flushed as he realized how close they were.
"Good to see you looking better, young master." A voice called out from where Alaric's desk was.
"How long-" Alaric tried to speak. He felt that his throat was feeling a little better than before. "Half an hour so far. Apparently you had a nightmare so Lady Alerion exhausted quite a bit of her magic to send you to sleep since you kept waking up." Emmitt calmly replied while turning around with a stack of papers in hand.
"She also finished your work for the day, so continue to rest for the rest of the day. We'll see if you are good enough to continue to work tomorrow." Emmitt informed Alaric.
The demon responded with a small nod and turned his focus back to the sleeping fae. Alaric knew better than to wake her up.. Only the saints knew what she would do to him if he had tried.... Decided to do something productive, Alaric reached over to his bedside table and picked up a book he needed to finish for his English class. As the demon opened to where he last left off, he scoffed as he recalled where he was reading. 'Of course, it's a confession scene,' Alaric amusingly thought as the irony of the situation set in. He continued to read the book in silence as he subconsciously enjoyed the fae's presence.
The sun had already set by the time Venus awoke. She had almost screamed as she realized what position she had fallen asleep in, as she was holding Alaric's hand. The fae gently let go of the demon's hand and took a breath, trying to calm her racing heart and the blood in her cheeks. As Venus' heart calmed down, she slowly got up from the chair she had pulled to Alaric's bed and gathered her things. When Venus got to the door she hesitated before opening it and glancing back at the sleeping demon.
"Get better soon, Alaric..." Venus softly whispered to no one as she walked out the door, determined to get the day's memory out of her head. No matter what Alaric thought of them.
3, 7, and 18 for Miss Ella aka my fav messy teen angel for the character ask!
Meg!!! Thank you for the ask! You know I love talking about my little hellraiser lol
3. What is/was your character’s relationship with their father like?
Ella literally has one of the best dads in the world. As his first born, she has always been the light of his eye. They get along very well, but Ella can test Emmitt sometimes. She knows he's the more lax parent which causes friction when she tries to get her way. But at the end of the day, Emmitt is so proud of Ella and would go to the end of the world and back for her.
7. Does your character have recurring themes in their nightmares?
Ella's dreams are always super weird and all over the place. She never dreams about the same thing twice.
18. Is your character more likely to admire wisdom, or ambition in others?
Definitely ambition. She gets her ambition from her mother which is why she pursues ballet so strongly. She loves people who have goals and are motivated to chase them because she's the same way!
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
To Manchas and Otterton: Have you ever spoken to each other since the Night Howler incidents? How has that night affected you?
Renato: "We have... and for a while, things were a little... awkward."
Emmitt, adjusting glasses: "Yeah... I still feel so guilty about attacking you."
Renato: "You were under the influence of the serum, you were not in control of yourself."
Emmitt: "Even so... I do find myself replaying that night again and again in my mind. Sometimes I even have... nightmares, about becoming savage again."
Renato: "As do I, my friend. It... can be hard, but it is good to talk about these things."
Emmitt: "Agreed. Nothing good comes from bottling this all up together."
Sick Day: Venus & Sick! Alaric (ft. Emmitt)
[Masterlist] [Mini Stories] [AO3] [Wattpad]
Written by @thelonelyreaderr and edited by me :3
Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Enjoy the Silence
So i missed out on A Quiet Place part II in theaters because I'm not going to a theater in the middle of a plague. I live in the US so idiots are making this thing last way longer than necessary. If i had loot, I'd have moved to Australia or New Zealand or South Korea by now. Anyway, it was one of the films that i was hoping to check out if we had this sh*t under control. We do not. So i had to wait for it to hit a streaming service to check it out. That is, apparently, eleven days away. So how the f*ck a mi seeing gifs of this thing cut directly from a blu ray print? Because it’s already out there in the wild. I happened across one of these places and took it in at my leisure. Let me say, this thing wold have been brilliant in a theater!
The Great
That f*cking opening! Holy sh*t! Such a brilliant way of starting a film. It grabs you a never lets go. Even after, when we got a lull in intensity, i was still spazzed the f*ck out.
The Good
Seriously, that opening sequence was f*cking incredible! Pure, white knuckle, intensity. I kind of want to see THAT movie now. Like, f*ck, , how did we go from that nightmare to farm life in less than a year?
I have to say, this film is gorgeous! The shots chosen, the way it’s edited, the cinematography, that wonderful camerawork; All of it coalesces into a joy to watch. It’s just as deft as the original but with a much broader scope. Sh*t really showcases what can bee done with a passionate eye and way more money.
As eye-catching as this film is, the strength, outside of some strong performances, definitely lies with the use of sound, and the lack thereof. Seriously, the sound design is definitely the star of this film. There are certain sequences where everything just drops out to give you Regan’s perspective, are easily the best part of this film.
I mentioned how strong the performances are in this thing and i cannot stress that enough. Obviously, Emily Blunt does her thing and the younger brother, Noah Jupe, has come along brilliantly as a performer. The supporting cast is exceptional, i absolutely adored what little we got of Djimon Hounsou and John Krasinski, but this is definitely Millicent Simmonds and Lillian Murphy movie. Those two have the most screen time and a palpable chemistry. Millicent’s Regan definitely has the same energy as her pops and Cillian’s Emmitt has a completely different dynamic.
I genuinely enjoy the progression of this story. Kind of wanted a more inclusive and intimate narrative about the Abbott family, but what we got is still really f*cking good.
The pacing in this thing is incredibly brisk. It’s over before you know it. A great deal of that stems from the fact it never, NEVER, let’s you rest. Like, there are lulls but they never last long and you’re hit with insane panic. Sh*t will leave you exhausted.
The Meh
That increased scope while trying to keep the narrative contained, only allots glimpses of the outside world. We didn’t get to see anything with the horrible people or have enough time on that island to care about any of those meat fodder. Like, Djimon didn’t even have a name. That feels like a missed opportunity or fodder for a ton of sequels. Either way, it was a detriment to this story, specifically.
That ending was a little abrupt for my tastes. Not enough to take you out of the film but enough for me to feel kind of shortchanged.
The Verdict
All in all, A Quiet Place part II is pretty good. I can see why it made so much money in theaters. It’s definitely not as good as the first, i think that one benefited from being basically a character piece, but the expanded scope of this one doesn’t hinder the narrative too much. It does sacrifice a bit of that tightness you had in the first in service to creating a much bigger world. Mileage will vary on that. Still, it’s chock full of outstanding performances, particularly out of Cillian Murphy and Millicent Simmonds. Those to carry this film and it look forward to the very obvious sequel in the works. I am left with a ton of f*cking questions, however. How long did everyone know they can’t swim? Why wasn’t this shouted from the f*cking mountaintops? If the government knew, why didn’t they fly planes overhead, bellowing that information? Why the f*ck didn’t just make all of the noise and lead the f*ckers into the ocean? That’s what i mean by tightness. The first one had a really solid world with really solid rules. This one opens that world up and opens it up to a ton of questions. Still, if yo can turn that part of your brain off, A Quiet Place part II is f*cking exceptional. Arguably the best film released this year so far. When yo can, definitely check it out.
Sorry if I'm bothering you but I have a small 60 parsecs au idea. Modern 60 Parsecs but Baby is a merman disguised as a human and hiding on land so he can escape from his parents and jail. Emmitt is his tired boyfriend AND roommate who knows about Baby's little secret and his past but loves him anyway, is still struggling to keep him from brushing his hair with a fork (as hilarious as he thinks it is), and is kinda sad he can't cuddle with Baby at night because he has to sleep in the bathtub
Whoa whoa...this is one of the cutest ideas I've ever read. ^__^ I love that they've already got a relationship going, and poor Emmet is just trying to get thru his days without having to worry about his landlord evicting them for always flooding the bathroom, or Baby getting forks stuck in his hair, or that time a bunch of crabs showed up at their door to seek revenge on Baby for beating up their cousin years ago. It's weird when Baby gossips with Emmet's pet goldfish, and Emmet can never suggest they go out for sushi because isn't that like cannibalism to Baby? Still, Emmet loves him with all his heart, and hopes that one day they can find a way to make Baby completely human. But until then, he doesn't mind sleeping on the bathroom floor once a week just so they can be close.
There's really so much possibility with this AU, I just love it. Does Baby have nightmares about going back to the ocean? Do his parents come looking for him? Do Emmet's friends and family get suspicious that he might be dating someone who isn't what he says he is?
And you're never bothering me with asks, please feel free to send as many as you'd like ^___^
Notes taken during Super Bowl IV
PREGAME
Recording is from CBC, starts with "A CBC color presentation", and is black and white. Apparently this is a kinescope recording and the only surviving version. CBS erased its tapes, but CBC kept it because the Vikings had so many Canadian fans.
It’s the Super Bowl! In colour! In black and white!
Announcers: Jack Buck, Pat Summerall, Frank Gifford, Jack Whitaker
Buck refers to Tulane Stadium as "the Sugar Bowl", a common informal name.
Introductions: Vikings offense and Chiefs defense
The Chiefs had the better entrance.
Johnny Robinson introduced for KC, may or may not play, former LSU star gets nice ovation
Multiple GM ads. Only one TV sponsor in Canada? Apparently GM had the first half only. Other brands (Carling, among them) had the second half.
Vikings win toss, will receive
Apollo 11 astronauts in the stands
John Mackey, NFLPA president, honors Apollo 12 astronauts. They receive standing ovation, as you'd expect.
John Mackey and the Astronauts.
National anthem: Southern University marching band with Doc Severinsen. Lyrics recited by Pat O'Brien instead of sung. Weird. Awkward. Awkweird.
FIRST QUARTER
Vikings start with run left to Osborne, then pass left to Osborn. A bunch of plays to the left side of the offense/right side of the defense on this drive
Kapp looks flustered in backfield, scrambles, hits Beasley for big gain down the middle. Down to KC 39.
DB Johnny Robinson in the game for Chiefs. There had been some uncertainty about his status.
Vikings drive stalls on KC 39. They punt it out of bounds at the Chiefs' 17.
Chiefs' first play: Line up in a four-man I, shift to T, Holmes run up the middle for a couple. They lined up in this Power I formation, then shifted, often throughout the game.
I dig this formation. Four-man I.
KC moving the pocket as they did in Super Bowl I. Dawson rolls left, hits Garrett for first down.
Bud Grant before game said Chiefs' small backs hide behind offensive linemen, tough to see.
Incredible play by Roy Winston to jump over blocker and sack Dawson. WOW. Upon rewatching it, the blocker actually moved out of the way and Winston jumped over nothing. Still an impressive sack.
Splat.
Chiefs stall, bring on Stenerud for 48 yard FG. Wind at his back. Kicked an NFL record 16 FG in a row in 1969. Kick is good, 3-0 Chiefs. Longest FG in Super Bowl history. Also, Stenerud is the first soccer-style kicker in Super Bowl history.
Oh, hey, look, more ads for GM.
Later on CBS: Ed Sullivan talks to Tiny Tim and his new wife Miss Vicki.
Both teams getting good pass rush. Kapp sacked, Vikings three and out....
...unless the Chiefs rough the punter, which they do. 2 or 3 Chiefs hit punter while he's in the air, which is a no-no. First down, Minnesota.
Kapp making a ton of throws to his running backs. Chiefs teeing off on receivers immediately after the catch the ball. They know what's coming. Another three and out, this time without the Chiefs doing something dumb to give away the ball.
More GM commercials. Impressively, they've all been different.
Dawson heating up, Chiefs pick up a couple first downs, and they're in Vikings territory.
Summerall says it rained all morning, field is wet, players may be slipping.
Mike Garrett is still fun to watch. Makes a couple defenders miss on five-yard run.
SECOND QUARTER
Dawson goes deep to Pitts, draws a pass interference penalty. Defender mistimes play, hits receiver before ball arrives. Chiefs down to MIN 32.
Near disaster for Chiefs on second down, Holmes and Dawson run into each other on what was supposed to be a handoff.
Dawson throws to end zone on third down, nearly picked off by Mackbee, probably should have been intercepted. Instead, Stenerud to attempt a 32 yard FG. Nails it. 6-0 Chiefs.
Vikings' Charlie West fumbles ensuing kickoff at his own 32, but whistle had been blown. Minnesota keeps the ball.
Kapp hits Henderson for 15 yards, fumbles, Chiefs recover. I'm not sure that's called a fumble in 2017. It was close to being an incomplete pass.
Doesn't matter too much. Dawson goes deep into double coverage for Taylor, picked off by Krause. Minnesota gets the ball back.
A bunch of deep passes today. Kapp chucks it 60 yards to Washington in single coverage against Thomas, incomplete. Later in the series, Kapp rolls left, behind the goalposts, and throws a 50-yard incomplete pass. I've never considered the goalposts as an extra blocker, but it would have been useful. Vikings will punt from back of end zone.
Commercial break. Bobby Orr stars in ad for 1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport. This *is* Canada, after all.
Chiefs run a counter tight end around out of power I. Neat play. Big gain by Pitts to Minnesota 25.
Alan Page nearly tackles Dawson before the handoff to Hayes. Canton vs. Alliance. Stark County represent! That would have been an awesome play.
Chiefs drive stalls. More Stenerud. Good again. 9-0 Kansas City. They've left some points on the table, but Minnesota hasn't really threatened. Chiefs seem like a vastly better team, but there's plenty of time left and the lead is still only nine points.
MIN Charlie West fumbles another kickoff. Ball goes right through his hands, hits him in the personal private zone, KC falls on it.
Chiefs take advantage of short field. Mike Garrett runs five yards for TD on trap play. 16-0 Kansas City.
West runs in front of teammate to catch ensuing kickoff. He doesn't fumble this time, which is good.
Kapp hits wide open Henderson downfield down the middle, into Chiefs territory to the 41. Two plays later, Culp sacks Kapp, drive stalls again, Minnesota weirdly tries 56 yard FG. It's short because it was a crazy idea. McVea returns it to KC 24.
Chiefs run the same end around to Pitts. It works again, but not quite as well.
Dawson throws terrible pass down the middle, nearly picked off by Hilgenberg. KC punts. Minnesota ends half. Halftime. Chiefs up 16-0.
HALFTIME
Southern University marching band. Al Hirt. Marguerite Piazza. Lionel Hampton. A reenactment of the Battle of New Orleans?!? "General Jackson's" horse freaks out and runs away. This is one of the dumbest, weirdest things I've ever seen. Now it's a jazz funeral. Holy moly. This is certainly...something. Is that Doc Severinsen? It is.
General Jackson’s horse, mid-freakout.
The redcoats are coming!
Commercials for Gillette and Right Guard. Have we come to the end of the GM portion of the game? Now a Red Cap Ale ad.
Jack Buck: "What a great halftime show that was! I'm sure you'll agree." Well, sure, Jack. Yeah. We'll go with that.
Pat Summerall's mic was clipped, but he just said something about Gary Cuozzo starting the second half at QB for the Vikings. That seems weird to me, though the Vikings liked Cuozzo enough to make him the starting QB in 1970.
THIRD QUARTER
Chiefs receive to start the second half.
KC methodically moving the ball and keeping the clock running. Rushing plays and high-percentage passing. Loooooooong huddles. They don't score, but they burn more than five minutes off the clock and give Minnesota the ball back at the Vikings' 31 after a booming punt from Wilson. Tick, tick, tick.
Curley Culp has been a beast for Kansas City. Best player on the field, perhaps.
Chiefs' Emmitt Thomas injured, laying prone on the field, and nobody pays much attention for an uncomfortably long time. Eventually they notice him. CBS goes to commercial. Thomas stays in the game.
A little help? Guys?
Nice scramble from Kapp on second down. I can see why he was a star on the huge fields in Canada. He was hard to hit.
Vikings putting together a nice drive, though they're chewing clock as they do it. Approaching five minutes left in the third quarter, still 16-0. Tick. Tick. Tick.
Kapp looking good rolling out. Makes a nice throw to Henderson to get inside the 20. Less than five minutes left in the third.
Osborn with a jumping, spinning four yard TD run. Nearly fumbled. Vikings showing signs of life. 16-7 now.
CBS runs a promo for the ABA All-Star Game.
Chiefs still keeping the ball on the ground. They're able to move the ball even though Minnesota knows the rest of the game will be run-heavy from the KC offense. Nice work from the Chiefs' offensive line.
Same tight end around for the third time in the game converts a crucial third and long. The Vikings are going to have nightmares about that play.
Minnesota personal foul gives Chiefs first down near midfield.
Dawson with a quick outside throw to Otis Taylor, makes cornerback and a safety miss and is off to the races. 46 yard touchdown down the right sideline, and it's 23-7. That Vikings touchdown drive has essentially been neutralized and the third quarter is about to end. Big problems for Minnesota.
Clint Jones nearly breaks a huge return on ensuing kickoff. Gets out to MIN 37.
Quarter ends with Vikings driving, first and ten their own 47.
FOURTH QUARTER
Kapp forces a throw into traffic on third and 3, picked off by KC's Willie Lanier. Lanier wrestled the ball away from the receiver, Beasley.
Chiefs run tight end screen to Pitts on first play after turnover. Complete for a loss of 7. At least the clock is still running. Not much reason for Dawson to pass at this point. Chiefs go three and out and punt from their own 41. 12 minutes or so left in the game.
Kapp scrambles, gets absolutely annihilated by Chiefs, and a flag is down. I think "well, yeah, that's roughing the passer". Nope, ineligible receiver downfield. First and 20. Things are getting desperate. Next play, Kapp throws a bomb for Henderson. Looks to me like the defender hit the receiver before the ball got there, but no flag. 2nd and 20.
Next play, Kapp hits Henderson underneath, Henderson drags defenders for about ten yards. Gain of 28. Gutsy play.
Vikings still desperate and they make a desperation mistake. Kapp chucks the pigskin into triple coverage and the predictable occurs. Interception, Chiefs ball, time for Dawson, Stram, and Da Boyz to kill clock. 10:22 left in the game, and Minnesota needs at least two touchdowns and a field goal.
KC taking no chances. Three straight runs to McVea gain three yards. They punt again, but clock is now approaching 8:00 and Vikings still need three scores.
Minnesota dinking and dunking as the clock ticks away. 6:00 left.
Kapp rolling left, gets absolutely annihilated by Brown. Gets his left shoulder driven into the turf and is injured. That would be the last play of his Vikings career. Gary Cuozzo comes in to play quarterback in a nearly hopeless situation. 4:00 left now, Vikings have burned half of the remaining clock and haven't yet crossed midfield.
Cuozzo makes terrible throw downfield, gets picked off. Chiefs have the ball, less than 4:00 left, up three scores. Game over, man. Game over.
Chiefs running the ball, chewing clock. Dawson rolls out, takes off, runs for 11. Nearly gets killed.
A couple more runs up the middle. Two minute warning. Jack Buck still saying things like "if Kansas City wins".
Dawson sacked on third down, Page takes a cheap shot on him after the play, gives Chiefs a first down. Canton vs. Alliance again. Alliance 2, Canton 0.
Chiefs pull Dawson with a minute left or so, Mike Livingston in to hand the ball to running backs. Vikings don't seem interested in stopping the clock. Final score: 23-7 Chiefs.
POSTGAME:
CBC: Changes next season will allow Canadian fans to see more games between the NFL and AFL. They must not have gotten the memo that the AFL has now been relegated to the dustbin of history.
Exercise Guru Taryn Toomey Explains Her “Wacky” In-Flight Routine
(Bloomberg) — At Bloomberg Pursuits, we love to travel. And we always want to make sure we’re doing it right. So we’re talking to globe-trotters in all of our luxury fields—food, wine, fashion, cars, real estate—to learn about their high-end hacks, tips, and off-the-wall experiences. These are the Distinguished Travel Hackers.
Taryn Toomey is the founder of Class, a workout program that combines various techniques (yoga, high-intensity interval training, cardio) with cathartic mantras and encouragement to discharge toxic energy. Think of it as fitness for both the brain and the body in a single, 60-minute session.
Read this: Travel Secrets by Hanli Prinsloo: You’ll Never Travel The Same Again
She logs around 50,000 miles per year and flies regularly on JetBlue to the West Coast. But Toomey doesn’t have any loyalty to a particular airline. “I move with the tide, depending on if I just had a nightmare situation with customer service,” she laughs.
Starting in mid-October, she will take her unique approach to fitness around America via a seven-city tour featuring live drumming from Caleb Spaulding. Ahead of the tour, we asked her to give us her tips for fighting jet lag, how to stay refreshed on the road, and how the lymphatic system is integral to the body’s overall wellness.
Wake up the old-fashioned way—with a real alarm clock
I have a no-phone policy in the bedroom. So I always bring a portable, battery-operated alarm clock so I can turn my phone off and put it away at night to prevent any interference with my sleep. I’ve created a ritual each night of turning my phone off 30 minutes before getting into bed. This allows my body to fully shut down and prepare for sleep.
Read this: Scared to Travel to ‘Dangerous’ Places? Don’t Be: Tyler Cowen
I find it especially important to do this when traveling and adjusting to a new time zone and environment. At times, I’ll schedule a backup wakeup call from the hotel, but I find them to be so jarring, especially in a pitch-black room. I think a little wooden alarm clock is a gentler way.
There’s actually a lot less space for error—I mean, I’ve had my phone not reset to the right time zone when I’m traveling before.
When you travel, pray for rain
When you’re somewhere traveling for 10 days and it rains for a couple of days, that feels like a gift, because you get to settle in more. On a trip, at times, you have that feeling that you should be in action every day—sightseeing, or going to a restaurant, or fill in the blank.
Read this: Why You Should Not Sleep on Planes: Emmitt Smith
A rainy day is permission from the universe to stay in and have an introspective, quiet, beautiful day to relax. Stay in your bathrobe, shut down, and let your nervous system decompress. We were just down doing a retreat in the Dominican Republic, and in the middle of the morning class, it rained; the skies just opened up and poured all day. And it felt like such a cleansing.
Everyone went back to their rooms, and when we finally reunited for dinner, everyone said they spent that day reflecting, resting, journaling, taking a bath. That’s serious restoration there.
Embrace your inner eccentric
I have a wacky in-flight routine: I rub rollers on my face to massage it—the Jillian Dempsey gold vibrating wand. You start on your neck and push it up. It just feels so good; I have a facial device obsession. Then I put on a hyaluronic serum from Barbara Sturm. I have tried all these different ones, and this is the one that works. My skin looks plump and glow-y after I use it. I’m a weirdo with those face tools, and I think people wonder: “What is wrong with this woman?”
She has a unique, multistage practice to beat jet lag …
I’m a big fan of understanding the lymphatic system. It doesn’t run on a track like your circulatory system, but instead it lives in the tissues, and the only way to get it moving is through movement. A run, of course, will activate that system, but you should do something else before you go running.
Go into your bedroom and do a series of dry-skin brushings; you can also use a hard wash cloth. From your feet, do a series of circular motions toward the belly, up the legs. Spend a lot of time on the stomach, then move up to your arms, hands, and shoulders.
I’ll end with a lymphatic drainage on my face. Take the flat hand from your chest and swoop up under your chin toward the lymph node by the ears. Then make a small, very light fist with your hand and perform tapping actions in the exact same places.
The dry brush is for your skin, which is the largest organ, then the tapping action gets down to the muscle. It’s a double whammy and takes all of three to seven minutes. When you’ve done that, go on a run to get your heart rate [moving], so the circulatory system can bring fresh oxygen to the blood.
… and it isn’t just a pre-run ritual, either.
Once you’re back from your run, get in the shower and do the same thing to get the circulation going. And perform some hydrotherapy. Stand in the shower for a minute with the water as cold as you can, hitting the brain and the heart.
Then turn it to warm, and stand for another minute. Repeat this three times. Because when you’re in the cold, all of the blood moves toward your organs, and when you do the hot water, it expands the blood and pushes it toward the surface.
You’re doing contraction-expansion to get the body flushed out. It should really help wake you up.
The best wellness destination in the world is in South America
When I think about the ultimate mind-body-spirit experience, I would say the Sacred Valley in Peru. You go out at night, and there’s more stars and sky; I’ve always found it very grounding. I used to stay at this place called Hanaq Pacha, which means “Where Heaven Meets Earth.” It was a woman, Mama Kia, who passed away; she had adopted 25 children, and it was created to fund it. Now the Niños Del Sol children’s home works with a local hotel nearby to host their guests instead.
Check in with your psoas muscle next time you’re on a flight
I will do some seated pigeon-pose stretches while I’m in the seat—I do try to always fly business class if I’m doing a big trip—where you just kind of cradle your leg and rock it back and forth, feeling the ball socket of your femur joint rolling around in your hip joints. It’s helpful to release your psoas muscle, which wraps from your inner thigh all the way through the outer hip into the lumbar spine. It’s the width of a filet mignon. When people’s backs feel really achy, they have a tendency to assume it’s their back, and oftentimes it’s that muscle, super tight.
Refuse that in-flight meal
My friend [nutritionist] Dana James told me to always fast on flights to help with jet lag. I’ll eat right before I take off, or right when I land. But I notice the amount of air in your digestive system—just from the altitude and the way that the system processes anything you put into it—is expanded. When we’re up in the air, we get bored, and there’s this constant bombardment of food and snacks. The first time I tried fasting on a flight was from New York to Los Angeles, and when I landed, I found that I didn’t feel like my stomach was sticking out five feet wider than it usually is. And I wasn’t as swollen in my fingers and my toes.
