More than fair. And I have read that story. It's a good one. I will write that one myself. I've been told I'm messed up in the best ways possible lol
Perhaps this. High school.. Peeta tells Finnick he needs to learn how to swim for the senior beach trip in 2 months. Finnick agrees to sneak him in after the pool closes but on the first night of the lesson, Finnick finally scores a date with Annie. Katniss accepts after realizing she can pay Peeta back for his help with a school project. The first lesson Katniss has for him? Teaching him how to float.
Lol, no worries. Write the fic you wanna read! Thanks for sending another prompt, though. I used this as an excuse to write some Peeta and Finnick friendship. Assume that Katniss is scheming here, because she is. ;)
--
“So, how did it go?”
Peeta pauses his drawing but doesn’t look up as he answers, his cheeks burning in humiliation.
“Humiliating.”
“Oh come on. A chance to get all wet and slippery with your lifelong crush? Not to mention you absolutely would’ve had to, you know… talk to her. I figured you’d be singing my praises and throwing me a parade right now,” Finnick says, dropping into a seat next to Peeta, noisily dropping his lunch tray on the table.
“I talked to her last semester when we worked on that English lit project together.”
“Yeah and then you went back to pretending the other doesn’t exist while making googly eyes across the classroom. It cannot have been that bad.”
Peeta hunches further over his sketchpad, once again wishing the world could swallow him.
“Unless,” Finnick drags out the word until Peeta finally looks up at his soon to be former friend, “you got a boner in the pool.”
“I’d almost prefer that,” Peeta snaps and Finnick’s eyes widen.
“Dude, what happened? She said the lesson went great.”
“Yeah, well then she’s a better liar than I thought,” he says petulantly and resumes drawing. Finnick elbows him until he cracks. “She tried to teach me to float and I couldn’t!”
Finnick snorts. Peeta glares. “I was like a freaking rock, every time.”
“I could… get you floaties,” Finnick says, still laughing. Peeta feels like gouging out his so-called friend’s eyes with his pencil. Instead, he tucks it behind his ear, shoves his sketchpad in his bag and stands up in a huff. “Oh come on, man it’s funny!”
Peeta opens his mouth to retort, but he’s caught gaping and frozen when the very subject of their conversation stops in front of him.
“Hey, Peeta. Glad I caught you. We still on for this afternoon? I can squeeze in a short lesson before I have to get Prim from her ballet class.”
“Uh, yeah,” he forces the words out, adjusting his shoulder strap and conveniently elbowing Finnick in the head.
“Great. See you then,” she says. “And don’t listen to Finnick. We’ll have you swimming circles around him in no time.” Then she smiles at him.
Smiles.
In the lunchroom.
At him. The boy with his entrails currently all scrambled and a not so great friend cackling at him in amusement.
“About those floaties,” Finnick says. Katniss reaches out and snatches Finnick’s roll off the tray.
“You gonna loan him yours? Annie said they’re still in your locker,” she says before taking a bite of the roll and walking off, leaving both Finnick and Peeta staring after her.

Also, @theeverlarkingmoose this chapter is for you. Your words of encouragement made me want to go back and re-read what I had written. Everything started falling in place after that ❤️
Based on prompt 110: A time travel AU: Katniss from Mockingjay, (any part of the book, it's up to you), winds up back the day before her sister's first reaping. What does she do now that she knows what's coming? Now that she knows how Peeta feels about her, and she knows how desperately she needs him, and what they could share? What on earth could she, or should she, even do/change? And what is she should lose it all again? [submitted by @wingletblackbird For EFE 2019]

CHAPTER 3.
The tribute train speeds along, silently hovering over the tracks on its way to the Capitol.
Alone in her compartment, Katniss cries. The hope and joy from the previous day are gone. Sorrow and defeat fill her heart as she sits on the bed.
Clutching a bag full of frosted cookies against her chest, she tries to come to terms with the fact that the unthinkable has happened again.
Covering her eyes from the glaring summer sun, an effervescent Effie Trinket walked onto the stage and pulled Prim's name out of a giant glass bowl.
For the second time in her life, Katniss stepped forward and volunteered to take her sister's place.
The crowd parted to let her through. Prim cried. Gale carried her away.
A silent District 12 saluted their tribute. Haymitch interrupted the proceedings with his drunken antics, and a rattled Effie called out Peeta's name.
After finishing the Treaty of Treason, the mayor prompted the tributes to shake hands.
Sorrow, pain, and an unexpected dash of hope danced in Peeta's eyes as he looked straight at her and gently squeezed her hand. Comforted by the gesture she no longer confused with a nervous spasm, Katniss squeezed back.
The goodbyes at the Justice Building were just as bad as she remembered them.
Katniss had thought it would be easier. She had imagined that knowing she had a real shot at coming back would help her be more convincing, more generous.
She wanted to be kinder to her mother --who had already proven she was strong enough to keep on going while Katniss was away-- and to leave her sister with a sense of certainty, with a bit of hope to cling to.
But, as soon as Prim started crying, Katniss's fears took over, and her resolutions melted as quickly as a blanket of snow.
In the end, history repeated itself, and Katniss used up most of her time going over all the practical stuff Prim and her mother needed to know. Right before the Peacekeepers barged in, the three Everdeen women hugged and promised, once again, that they would try their best.
Once her family left, Mr. Mellark delivered his cookies. The baker was just as quiet this time around, but Katniss didn't mind. Instead of fretting over his intentions, she was grateful for his generosity and kindness.
The door opened again, and Madge came in like a whirlwind, holding out the mockingjay pin and talking about district tokens.
"I'll bring it back," Katniss promised as her friend leaned in to fix the bird to her dress.
Madge kissed her friend's cheek. "I'm counting on that."
Madge had barely left the room when Gale walked in.
His eyes were dark and stormy, but when he opened his arms, she walked straight into them.
Their breakfast that morning hadn't been as pleasant as the one she remembered. Instead of joking around and talking about escaping into the woods, Gale had been surly and quiet.
To Katniss's relief, he hadn't mentioned Peeta or her stroll around the Meadow the previous afternoon. It didn't matter. His contribution to the meal, a day-old tesserae grain roll that could have only come from the Hob, spoke louder than any words ever could.
Gale Hawthorne hadn't been in the mood to stop by the bakery that morning.
"Listen," he said, stepping away from their embrace to look at her face. "Getting a knife should be pretty easy, but you've got to get your hands on a bow. That's your best chance."
Katniss smiled. There he was, her friend, her partner, the man who was willing to put his own feelings aside, like he'd done in Thirteen, to help and support her.
No matter what, Gale had her back. Even if he wasn't thrilled with her right now, he would keep her family safe.
"You know how to kill," Gale insisted as they discussed strategies.
"Not people," she muttered.
"How different can it be, really?" A grim remark uttered in a moment of despair. She had never liked it but, after surviving two arenas, it made her furious.
"It's incredibly different!" Katniss yelled. Anger and dread danced in her veins as she remembered where she was headed to. "I'd be killing a person, Gale! A person! I'd be erasing their thoughts, their dreams, their—,"
"Listen," Gale grabbed her by the shoulders, "Catnip, you can't think that way. Not in the arena. You need to remember, only one comes out, right?"
Only one. The words were oddly familiar. Numb, Katniss nodded.
"Say it,” he pressed.
"They have to have a victor," Katniss whispered. Looking up into Gale's silver eyes, she repeated, "Only one comes out."
"That's it, and you can be the one. You can be the one who comes home, back to Prim, back to your mother. Because that's all that matters, right? They are all that matters."
"Right."
Pulling her back into his arms, Gale lowered his head to her ear and whispered, "You can do this, Katniss. Just… promise me, you won't let anyone distract you."
Anyone. He meant Peeta, of course. But Peeta wasn’t a distraction, he was her mission.
Clinging to his embrace to soak up his warmth, she promised, “I won’t.”
A Peacekeeper walked in.
Always the nonconformist, Gale asked for more time. He was granted none.
"Don't let them starve!" Katniss cried out, panicked, as her friend was escorted out of the room.
"I won't!" Gale vowed. "You know I won't!"

By the time Effie comes to collect her for supper, Katniss's tears have dried up.
Resigned to her fate, Katniss follows her escort through the narrow, rocking corridor into the dining room where Peeta sits, waiting for them.
At the sight of him, Katniss's breath hitches. This is the Peeta she knows best. Capitol clothes, winning smile, and a touch of… heartbreak in his eyes.
That wasn't there earlier, Katniss thinks. What happened? As Peeta's eyes flit away, she suddenly remembers. His mother.
Yes, Mrs. Mellark just told her youngest son that he's not good enough to come back from the arena.
She wants to run to his side, to wrap her arms around him, press a kiss on his forehead, and soothe his pain away.
She wishes with all her heart that she could tell him that the Witch and her bitterness don't matter, but she can't. Instead, she bites her lip, takes the empty chair by his side, and waits for Effie to start giving instructions.
The supper comes in courses. The starter, a thick carrot soup, is followed by a green salad.
Katniss is reaching for the platter with the lamb chops and mashed potatoes when Peeta leans into her side and casually says, "So… when you said you'd be at the back…"
Surprised, Katniss glances back at him. The teasing glint in his eyes brings a smile to her lips. "I guess I meant the front," she says, stabbing a lamb chop with her fork and dropping it on her plate. With a coy shrug, she adds, "I confuse them sometimes."
Peeta's retort is interrupted by Effie's shrill voice. "Oh! Are you two friends?"
Katniss freezes, but Peeta quickly comes to her rescue. "Not really," he says, ladling a dollop of mashed potatoes on his plate, "we go to school together, that's all."
Effie takes this news with a polite nod. Just as they're about to finish the main course, she speaks again. "At least, you two have decent manners," she says. "The pair last year ate everything with their hands like a couple of savages. It completely upset my digestion."
Katniss narrows her eyes. Over the last couple of years, she's come to appreciate Effie, but her comment still disgusts her. So, once again, she makes a point of eating the rest of her meal with her fingers and wiping her hands on the tablecloth when she's done.
Bewildered, Effie straightens up in her chair, pursing her pink lips in shocked disapproval.
Good, Katniss thinks with a satisfied smirk. Things are just as they should be.
XXXXX
Katniss's first day in the Capitol is almost an exact replica of her previous one.
Her prep team scrubs and strips every inch of her body, removing all her hair and leaving her like a plucked bird, ready for roasting.
Later, when Cinna walks into the room, Katniss rolls her hands into tight fists and, somehow, manages to stop herself from lunging into his arms.
XXXXX
The carriage ride around the City Circle is a huge success.
While Portia is busy extinguishing the last of the artificial flames, Katniss reluctantly lets go of Peeta's hand.
"Thanks for keeping hold of me," says Peeta massaging his hand, "I was getting a little shaky there."
"It didn't show," Katniss tells him. "I'm sure no one noticed."
"I'm sure they didn't notice anything but you," he replies, looking boldly into her eyes, "You should wear flames more often. They suit you."
Then, he does it again. He flashes her that smile, the one she knows he saves just for her, genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness.
Warmth rushes through her, and she bites her lip to keep from smiling too widely. She used to feel so vulnerable whenever this happened --like Peeta was in control, and she couldn't trust herself around him-- but she knows better now. Peeta's not trying to manipulate her, he's just paying her a compliment, and he's damned good at it!
No warning bells go off. No thoughts of hidden agendas, or strategies, or games cross Katniss's mind. Only joy and affection propel her as she stands on tiptoe and kisses his cheek, right on his bruise.
XXXXX
When Katniss notices the red-headed Avox at the dinner table later that night, she doesn't even flinch.
With watchful eyes, she follows the girl's movements and tries not to think about Darius —or the way he looked at her the last time they saw each other in that same room.
Taking a bite of her cake, Katniss glances back at Peeta and wonders —just for an instant— if he ever saw what Effie called the "matching set" while Snow kept him captive.
The thought is too painful to even consider, so she stops poking at it and goes back to the conversation around the table.
Later, as she lies in bed looking at images of a slow trickling stream projected on her wall, she silently berates herself for her silence. Her original reaction hadn't really hurt anyone, but it had led to Peeta covering for her and showing her the rooftop garden.
She longs to go there now. It's the only place where she can breathe, and she's sure Peeta's there already, looking down unto the Capitol skyline. But how can she join him when no one in this timeline has shown her the way?
The answer is so simple it makes her laugh. The terrace isn't exactly hidden, and Peeta knows she's an illegal hunter who sneaks under an electrified fence every day. He won't question her if she says she just stumbled upon it while exploring the apartment.
Katniss steps into the cool, windy evening air. Twelve floors down, the Capitol twinkles like a vast field of fireflies. It's a familiar sight by now, but it still fills her with wonder.
Peeta's already there, standing by the railing at the edge of the roof. His eyes widen when he sees her approach.
"How did you find this place?" Katniss asks, trying her best to sound surprised.
"Cinna showed me," Peeta says. "You?"
"I did some exploring."
Katniss reaches his side, and they both turn to look out onto the skyline.
"You can practically see the whole city," Peeta says.
They stand there for a few minutes, enjoying the show of flickering lights, listening to the wind chimes behind them and the noises from the city below.
They're standing so close together that she can feel the warmth radiating off of him. A little closer and I would smell his scent, she thinks, hoping she could wrap her arms around him and bury her face in his shirt.
"A penny for your thoughts," Peeta asks.
Startled out of her reverie, Katniss laughs, "A penny? Is that the going rate in town?"
Peeta shrugs. "I guess. It's just something my grandmother used to say."
She's heard this before, back on their victory tour, but she still asks, "Which grandmother?"
"Grandma Mellark. She had tons of sayings, one for every occasion. She died when I was ten, but I still remember some of them." After a short pause, he asks, "How about you? Do you remember your grandparents?"
"No. I never met them."
Peeta turns towards her. The earnest curiosity dancing in his eyes tugs at her heart. "Never?"
Katniss shakes her head. "I know my mother's parents ran the apothecary up until a few years ago, but we never went there. I might have seen them on the street, but…"
"And on your father's side?"
"They both died before I was born. I don't know much about them, just that they knew a lot about plants and that my grandmother loved music. My dad used to say that she could remember any song after only hearing it once and that she had a beautiful voice."
Peeta's hushed words are almost lost in the din of the wind chimes, but they reach her all the same. "Just like yours."
She's about to contradict him but, when she looks up, her mind goes blank. Peeta's looking back at her with a tenderness and warmth that still haunts her dreams.
“I don’t sing,” she hears herself say.
"But you used to,” Peeta says, “back when we were little.”
It's almost like being back in the cave. Her skin tingles, her heart soars.
Flustered, Katniss asks, "You remember that?"
Peeta looks away. His cheeks turn beet red as he softly admits, "I do."
Her heart's hammering madly against her rib cage now.
For an instant, she thinks he's going to tell her the story again, the one about their first day of school and the teacher asking her to sing; but he does no such thing.
Keeping his eyes on the horizon, Peeta straightens up and pushes himself away from her and the railing.
Disappointed, Katniss turns away.
Deep down, she's also relieved. As much as she wants to regain the closeness she once shared with Peeta, she knows they're not ready yet.
Unlike her, Peeta doesn't know what their future holds. He likes her well enough, but they're training for the Games. He still needs to keep his distance from his district partner.
Satisfied that she's done plenty for one night, Katniss stretches her arms over her head and fakes a yawn. "We should get some rest," she says.
"Yeah. Tomorrow's going to be a big, big, big day!"
Katniss laughs. Peeta's impersonation of their escort has always been pitch-perfect.
They climb the stairs together. When they reach the corridor that leads up to their rooms, Peeta whispers, "Good night, Katniss."
The words wrap around her heart, soothing her like no morphling ever did. She's still savoring them when she whispers back, "Good night, Peeta."
XXXXX
It's a little before ten when Katniss and Peeta step out of the elevator and into the Training Center. The other tributes are already there gathered in a circle around Atala, the head trainer.
As soon as the tall woman starts to talk, Katniss tunes her out. She's heard the little speech twice already. She doesn't need to listen to it again.
Beside her, Peeta lets out a small sigh.
He's frustrated, Katniss thinks. She considers reaching out to squeeze his hand but stops herself, knowing that Peeta probably won’t welcome the gesture right now.
She can’t blame him, not after the morning they've had.
The discussion over their individual skills at breakfast had been slightly less contentious this time around, but not by much.
After mentioning Katniss’s abilities, Peeta had still brought up his mother's hurtful parting words.
Katniss had been less cagey. She had managed to keep the bread incident out of the conversation, but Peeta's comment about the effect she had on people had —once again— raised her hackles. Not because she had felt insulted, lile the first time, but because she’d been reminded of everything she’d lost.
As she saw the old Peeta willing to give his life for her, she couldn’t help but think of the other version of him; the version she had left behind in District 13. That Peeta hated her. He had gone through hell and back to be with her and now he wanted her dead.
Who knows? She bitterly told herself after Haymitch dismissed them. Maybe this magical effect of mine doesn't last very long. Maybe, one day, the whole country will wake up and hate me too.
XXXXX
While Atala reads down the list of the skill stations, Katniss can't keep her eyes from flitting around the room.
Marvel. Clove. Cato. Fox-face. Thresh. Rue.
Her chest tightens. These are the faces that haunt her dreams. The voices that echo in her nightmares.
Katniss bites her lip to keep from screaming. Her palms are clammy, her heart is racing, but she doesn't move an inch.
This is the hardest thing she's had to do so far, and she needs to get it right. She can't let the others see her distress.
Slowly averting her eyes, she reminds herself, My name is Katniss Everdeen. I am seventeen years old. My home is District 12. I was in the Hunger Games. I escaped. The Capitol hates me, but I came back.
Katniss breathes. In. Out. In. Out.
Her heart rate is almost back to normal when she finishes. I came back to make Snow pay.
She's still lost in her thoughts when Peeta nudges her arm and makes her jump.
His expression is sober. "Where would you like to start?"
Katniss looks around at the Career Tributes who are already showing off, clearly trying to intimidate the field. Then at the others, the underfed, the incompetent, shakily having their first lessons with a knife or an ax.
"Suppose we tie some knots," she says.
"Right you are," says Peeta.
XXXXX
They spend their morning trying out different skills.
Now that she knows what type of arena awaits her, Katniss realizes that the stations are full of clues. The kinds of ropes they use at the knot-tying class. The mud, clay, and berry juices available in the camouflage section. They all seem so obvious now that she knows they'll be going to a forest.
When they reach the medicinal plants' section, Katniss stops short. The last time she was here, she practically skipped it, but she's on a different mission now, so she walks in and makes sure Peeta follows.
A big screen shows pictures of plants with a brief description underneath.
Katniss flips through the crisp images until she finds what she's looking for: the leaves Rue used to treat her.
"These are great!" she enthusiastically tells Peeta. "They fight off infection, bring down swelling, and numb the pain. They're handy when you've been stung by insects or bees. You have to chew them up into a pulp and spit them on top of your wound."
Peeta wrinkles his nose. "Spit them?"
"Yeah," Katniss confirms, "Otherwise, you won't release their properties. My mother would use other methods, but…" Lowering her voice, she adds, "Sometimes you don't have a lot of options when you're out in the woods."
Apparently satisfied with her answer, Peeta nods. After glancing around to make sure no one is listening, he whispers, "Have you been stung many times?"
"Only twice," Katniss admits, "I immediately pulled the stingers out and put the leaves on top. It wasn't so bad."
Peeta's eyes are locked on the screen as he says, "Maybe I should stuff my pockets with these if I ever find any in the arena. You know? Just in case."
"It won't hurt," Katniss agrees, holding on to the hope that he will do just that.
XXXXX
On the second night of her training, Katniss decides to go back to the rooftop.
Peeta is already there. He's sitting on a bench by the flower beds with a sketchpad propped up against his bent knee. The little bundle of pencils she gave him back in District Twelve rests by his side.
She can tell he's distracted, so she clears her throat to make her presence known.
"Hey!" Peeta calls out. He looks tired, but his smile is sweet and welcoming.
"Mind if I join you?" she asks.
Peeta pats the empty seat next to him, and Katniss walks over.
A small sigh escapes her as she sits down. Her daytime routine hasn't been as tiring this time around, but she's still beat.
"Nice pad," she says.
"It's Portia's," Peeta runs his fingers along the edge of the paper in a reverent caress. "She said I could borrow it."
Anticipating her next question, Peeta tilts the pad in her direction.
Katniss gasps. The angle of the image is one she cannot place, but there's no doubt in her mind, Peeta has painted her woods.
Reaching for the corner of the pad so as not to smudge his drawing, she asks, "Where is this?"
"It's the view from my house."
Katniss narrows her eyes, the bakery is in the center of town, but Peeta hasn't included any buildings in his picture. "Your house?"
"There's an attic that we use for storage. I like to go up there sometimes. It's higher than most buildings in the district, so you get to see all the way out into the woods."
Katniss stares at the drawing and tells herself not to cry, but it's not easy. Not when Prim and District Twelve are so far away, not when Peeta is opening up to her in ways he never did before.
"Do you like it?" Peeta asks.
The nervous tremor in his voice tugs at her heart; she reaches for his arm and gives him a reassuring squeeze. "Of course I do! Peeta, it's extraordinary! Prim's right. You're very talented."
Peeta shakes his head and accepts the compliment with a quiet, "Thank you."
Letting go of him, Katniss settles in her seat, resting her back against the wall and stretching her legs. Nodding to his pad, she says, "Go on. Don't let me interrupt."
Peeta starts drawing again.
Katniss watches, mesmerized, as his hand dances over the paper, making the blank page bloom with delicate strokes of color.
They stay like that for a while, side by side on the bench, wrapped in peaceful silence, enjoying each other's presence and silently wishing for more time.
XXXXX
As soon as the anthem is over, Katniss makes a beeline out of the Training Center lobby and onto the elevator bank. Moving swiftly, she veers into a car that does not contain Peeta.
The crowd slows the entourages of stylists and mentors and chaperones. Soon, Katniss finds herself alone with only other tributes for company. No one speaks.
The elevator stops to deposit four tributes before she's alone. One quick breath is all she has time for before the doors open on the twelfth floor.
Peeta has only just stepped from his car when she slams her palms into his chest and pushes him towards the wall.
Peeta loses his balance, but the wall breaks his fall. A few inches away from him, an ugly urn filled with fake flowers stands on its pedestal, untouched.
With Peeta safely out of harm's way, Katniss grabs the urn and smashes it on the floor, shattering it into hundreds of tiny pieces.
Good, she thinks as she takes a step back, I've always hated the damned thing.
"What was that for?" Peeta says, aghast.
"You had no right! No right to go saying those things about me!" Katniss yells at him.
Before Peeta can say anything, the elevators open, and the whole crew is there, Effie, Haymitch, Cinna, and Portia.
"What's going on?" says Effie, a note of hysteria in her voice as she notices the broken urn and Peeta slumped form against the wall. "Did you trip?”
"No," says Peeta pushing himself off the wall to straighten up, "Katniss broke it after she shoved me."
Haymitch turns on Katniss. "Shoved him?"
"This was your idea, wasn't it?" Katniss answers, "Turning me into some kind of fool in front of the entire country?"
"It was my idea," Peeta cuts in. "Haymitch just helped me with it."
The hurt in his eyes guts her, but she can't back down now. This is how she reacted the first time around, and as hard as it is, she knows she has to stick with it.
"Yes, Haymitch is very helpful. To you!" she yells.
"You are a fool," Haymitch says in disgust. "Do you think he hurt you? That boy just gave you something you could never achieve on your own."
"He made me look weak!" Katniss says.
"He made you look desirable! And let's face it, you can use all the help you can get in that department. You were about as romantic as dirt until he said he wanted you. Now they all do. You're all they're talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District Twelve!" says Haymitch.
"But we're not star-crossed lovers!" she says.
Haymitch grabs her shoulders and pins her against the wall. "Who cares? It's all a big show. It's all how you're perceived…"
As Haymitch prattles on about sponsors, Katniss tunes out. She doesn't need to be convinced of anything. She already knows their strategy is the right one.
As soon as Cinna steps into the conversation, Katniss softens. "I should have been told, so I didn't look so stupid," she grumbles.
"No, your reaction was perfect. If you'd known, it wouldn't have read as real," says Portia.
"She's just worried about her boyfriend," says Peeta gruffly, eyes locked on the shattered urn.
Katniss fixes him with a deadly glare. "I don't have a boyfriend."
"Whatever," says Peeta. "But I bet he's smart enough to know a bluff when he sees it. Besides, you didn't say you loved me. So what does it matter?"
As the words sink in, an old familiar darkness envelops her. This, right here, is what has caused so much pain between them.
Even after all this time and everything they've been through, she has never been able to tell Peeta how she feels about him. Just as she's never told Gale that he's nothing more than a dear friend.
This silence, this reticence, has hurt Peeta over and over again. It's the reason why he pushed her away after their first Game and why President Snow was able to twist his mind and convince him that she was a mutt programmed to kill him.
I need to do better, she thinks. This time around, I need to do more.
Feeling all eyes on her, Katniss turns to Cinna and asks, "After he said he loved me, did you think I could be in love with him, too?"
"I did," says Portia. "The way you avoided looking at the cameras, the blush."
The others chime in, agreeing.
"You're golden, sweetheart," Haymitch adds. "You're going to have sponsors lined up around the block."
Worried that she's going to burst out in tears, she forces herself to acknowledge Peeta. "I'm sorry I shoved you."
"Doesn't matter," he shrugs. "The urn got it worse."
Portia and Cinna's goodnatured laughter diffuses the remaining tension.
"Come on, let's eat," says Haymitch directing everyone towards the delicious smells wafting in from the dining room.
XXXXX
The roof is not lit at night, but as soon as her bare feet reach its tiled surface, she sees his silhouette, black against the lights that shine endlessly in the Capitol.
There's quite a commotion going on down in the streets, music and singing and car horns. Katniss knows she could slip away now without Peeta noticing her; he wouldn't hear her over the din, but that's not what she wants.
Her feet move soundlessly across the tiles. She's only a yard behind him when she says, "You should be getting some sleep."
Peeta starts but doesn't turn, just gives his head a slight shake. "I didn't want to miss the party. It's for us, after all."
She comes up beside him and leans over the edge of the rail. The wide streets are full of dancing people. Squinting to get a better look at them, she asks, "Are they in costumes?"
"Who could tell? With all the crazy clothes they wear here." Turning to her, he asks, "Couldn't sleep, either?"
"Couldn't turn my mind off," she says.
"Thinking about your family?"
"Not exactly," she admits a bit guiltily. After going through two arenas, she's not as worried about Prim and her mother as she once was. She knows they can cope without her. "All I can do is wonder about tomorrow. Which is pointless, of course."
Facing him, she says, "I really am sorry about before."
"It doesn't matter, Katniss," Peeta says.
"I was just upset that you would share something private like that…"
Peeta nods. "I know."
"And, also… I just don't get it. I mean, why would you give me an advantage like that? You're going to need sponsors too, you know?"
Peeta shakes his head. "It won't make a difference. I've never been a contender in these Games. Not really."
Katniss reaches for his hand. "Peeta, that's no way to be thinking."
"Why not? It's true." With the gentlest of touches, Peeta runs his fingers over the back of Katniss's hand. "My best hope is to not disgrace myself and . . ." he hesitates.
With a small squeeze, she silently encourages him to continue.
"I don't know how to say it exactly," Peeta finally says. "Only . . . I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense?"
Katniss swallows thickly.
Once upon a time, she stood there and told him that she didn't understand and —most importantly— that she didn't care. But she's a different person now. She knows exactly what he means and why it matters.
Although she knows what he's getting at, she still needs him to complete his thought. Shyly, she asks, "Do you mean you won't kill anyone?"
"No, when the time comes, I'm sure I'll kill just like everybody else. I can't go down without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to . . . to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their Games," says Peeta.
Her chest tightens at his words. Being back in that moment with him reminds her of everything that’s gone wrong in her life.
Before her mind can wander back into the dark recesses of her pain, she says, "The thing is, Peeta, you're not. None of us are. That's how the Games work."
"OK, but within that framework, there's still you, there's still me," he insists. "Don't you see?"
Katniss nods. She sees, she knows, she understands. What's more, she still can't believe she was ever so blind.
She inches closer to him so he can hear her over the ruckus of the city and the wind chimes.
In her mind, she repeats the little speech she's prepared for this moment. Every year they throw us in an arena and tell us to kill each other, and we do it. But there's a part, deep inside of us, that they don't own, a part that refuses to be pushed around and that will stand up and say, "enough, this is a line I won't cross."
But, once she opens her mouth, the words that slip from her lips are quite different, "I don't have a boyfriend."
Peeta blinks. Once. Twice. "What?"
Katniss bursts out laughing. "I'm sorry, I just…" Bewildered, she covers her face to hide her embarrassment and silently reprimand herself for losing her focus.
With a shake of her head, she straightens up. Her earnest eyes meet Peeta's. "I get what you're saying. They are forcing us to fight for our lives, but they don't get to decide how we go about it, right? We do. At the end of the day, it's up to us. We choose who to attack and who to help, when to face danger and when to hide. "
Peeta nods. "Right." Looking out into the sprawling city, he adds, "I just hope I can make the right choices, you know?"
Katniss sighs. “Yeah, me too.”
Leaning against the railing, Peeta tilts his head to look at her. The playful glint in his eyes is something she hasn't seen in a very long time. "So, you don't have a boyfriend."
Katniss shakes her head, chuckling at the absurdity of the topic.
"What about the guy who took your sister away at the reaping?"
"That's Gale."
"Uh-huh," Peeta's head bobs up and down as he nods. "And Gale is…"
Katniss looks up at him. He's so open, so pure, right now that all her thoughts about plans and strategies melt away. "He's just a friend," she says.
Peeta's smile forms slowly, warm and genuine, a little flirty even. It makes her whole body tingle. "Just a friend, huh? Does he know that?"
Katniss's jaw goes slack. Back in the day, she would have answered with a resounding "yes, of course, he does" but, that answer doesn't really fit the situation. She knows that now. So, instead of throwing her righteous indignation at him, she asks, "What do you mean?"
Peeta shrugs. "I don't know. It's just… I thought you had something with him."
Genuinely intrigued, she asks, "Why?"
"Um," Peeta fills his lungs with crisp Capitol air. As he pushes it out, he says, "You seem to spend a lot of time together. Whenever I see you around town, you're either with him or with Prim. I used to think he was your cousin or something. You favor each other. But then... there was the look."
Katniss frowns. "The look?"
"Yeah." Peeta's shy smile makes another appearance. "He kept glaring at me the other day when we met up by the Meadow." The shocked expression on her face makes him chuckle. "I'm surprised you didn't notice."
"Well," Katniss reaches for the end of her messy braid and begins twisting it around her finger. "I wasn't focusing on him."
Peeta's lips part, but no words come out.
Blushing, Katniss turns to face the city again. "Gale and I hunt together. Our families are close. That's it."
Peeta's gentle touch on her elbow gets her attention. Kind, soft eyes gaze straight into hers when he says, "You know, Katniss, what I said earlier—,"
Impulsively, she leans forward and kisses him, stopping his words.
It takes Peeta half a second to react. In one fluid move, he wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her to him.
His lips meld with hers in a slow, sweet dance.
After months of pain and sorrow, Katniss finally feels joy. Closing her eyes, she forgets the world and kisses him with abandon.
Peeta's free hand makes its way to the back of her head, where he buries his fingers in her hair to keep her there, rooted in his arms, anchored to him.
Elated, Katniss hums her approval.
This kiss is like the cave and the beach all rolled into one. It's like every happy moment they've ever shared together, every smile, every touch. It's like coming home after a long day, like finding her soul.
That familiar stirring inside her chest, warm and curious, comes back to life. It fills her entire being with want and need, pushing her to explore more. Blindly, she follows.
Holding on to his broad shoulders, Katniss pulls him even closer, pressing herself against his chest until she can feel his heartbeat, strong and steady, beating against her own.
Smiling, Peeta begins raining kisses over her cheeks, her nose, her forehead.
Her skin tingles. Her pulse races. Her heart soars.
I'll keep you safe, she promises, holding on to him like she did back at the beach, back when they were surrounded by mutts and enemies and lies.
With one long sigh, Peeta finally pulls away, pressing his forehead to hers while they both catch their breaths.
In that brief moment of glorious harmony only one thought goes through her mind. Peeta. Every heartbeat is like a reminder. He's back, he's here, he's mine.
Glancing up, she finds his eyes, dark and dazed, and she knows. Whatever this is, Peeta feels it too. He always has.
"Katniss—,"
"No," she interrupts again, placing her fingers on his lips to quiet him. She hates what she's about to do, but she doesn't have a choice.
She takes a step away from him and immediately feels lost. "You have a plan for tomorrow, right?"
Peeta's face falls at the sudden reminder of why they're there. He nods.
Reaching forward, Katniss brushes the hair back from his forehead in one last tender caress. "That's what you need to focus on, OK? Just think about—,"
"Staying alive?" Peeta finishes, a crooked grin pulling at the corner of his mouth.
Katniss cups his cheek. "Exactly." Her heart skips a beat when he leans into her touch, but she still insists, "This doesn't change anything that happens tomorrow, Peeta. It can't."
"I know," he says, covering her hand with his and pressing a kiss to her palm. "It just changes everything that's happened until today."
Katniss bites her lip and nods. Peeta's right. Even for her, things are dramatically different now. There's so much more at stake. She knows where they stand, and she's no longer running away from him and the things he makes her feel.
Rising to the tips of her toes, she kisses him one last time. "See you tomorrow," she says.
Then, she walks away.

The Soul Within the Star
Written by: @nightlock-1989
Prompt 133: The victory tour is live-streamed and mandatory viewing for each district. What no one expected however, was for Snow to know Peeta was the words behind Katniss - the one he couldn’t control. When peeta starts talking about rue and thresh in D11, snow issues the command, and everyone is shocked when a bang rings out and a red spot starts rapidly spreading on Peeta’s chest. Reactions and the aftermath! [submitted by anonymous]
I wish I knew who submitted this but whoever it was, I hope you enjoy. I kept glossing over this prompt and then one day I read it again and the story came to me.
Rated T and no beta
The Soul Within the Star
“He can be dealt with,” Plutarch Heavensbee says to President Snow. “As soon as the opportunity arises, we will take it. Knowing him, I think he’ll make a mistake publicly.”
President Snow slowly smiles, twirling a perfect white rose between his fingers. “I’ll issue the order to have them armed and ready. As soon as he speaks a word out of line, he will be eliminated.”
*****
Katniss is having difficulty speaking, so Peeta begins for her. He begins talking about how Thresh showed Katniss mercy and how Rue reminded Katniss of her sister.
Katniss is invested in what he is saying before being startled by a loud bang. She’s looking around to see what the possible source is when she hears a thud next to her. Peeta is laying on the ground. A small red spot on his chest begins to rapidly spread. She is on her knees by his side in an instant, one hand applying pressure, the other caressing his cheek.
“Peeta, look at me. You’re going to be okay,” Katniss assures him, although not quite believing her own words.
“Katniss?” he gasps. One hand covers the one on his chest while the other hand, coated in blood, caresses her cheek.
“Where the hell is the medic?” their mentor yells.
Peeta’s eyes begin closing and Katniss shakes him hard. “Stay awake, Peeta.”
“I’m so tired, Katniss.”
“No, don’t even think about it. You stay with me,” she cries.
He pulls the hand that’s on his chest away and brings it to his lips.
“Always,” he whispers before he succumbs to the darkness.
“NOOOOO!” she screams while thrashing at the Peacekeepers who are pulling her away. She feels a poke in her shoulder and then darkness follows her, too.
*****
When she comes to, she is on a soft bed on the train. She looks to her right and sees Haymitch, sitting in a chair with a bottle to his lips. He senses she’s awake and moves towards the bed, sitting in the empty space.
Haymitch barely moves when he shakes his head.
“Where is he?” she whispers.
“A hovercraft took his body.”
They tell her it was a rebel who shot and killed one half of the star-crossed lovers.
*****
It does nothing to soothe the districts and when the Quarter Quell announcement is made that the tributes will be reaped among the existing pool of victors, Katniss can do nothing but burst into laughter. She has gone mental and is unpredictable since Peeta was taken from her. Hopefully, the President won’t fault her family if someone else kills her, instead of her doing it herself.
Her plan is hindered, however, when Plutarch informs her that if she doesn’t actually try, the President has ordered her mother and sister to be killed. This is entertainment to the Capital citizens after all.
*****
In the arena, Katniss is lured by a beautiful voice, Peeta’s voice, away from the other victors. She leaves them behind, seeking only what she desires most. Finnick races past her when there is a terrifying scream. Peeta’s tortured scream soon follows and the two of them are trapped for one agonizing hour.
“Who was that voice?” she asks Finnick.
Finnick, leans into her ear and whispers, “My Annie.”
While she has no fight left for herself, she is willing to fight so that he can go home and be with his beloved.
*****
She focuses on a star as she’s being lifted by the claw. Her father told her that long ago, before the Dark Days, people spoke of souls going to a place called Heaven, that was up in the sky and where you reunited with loved ones after death and that there was a soul within each star. Maybe she is looking at Peeta’s.
*****
She comes to in the hovercraft but before she can grab the empty syringe, she is poked and feels as if she is being consumed by fire. As her eyes drift shut, she smiles, eagerly welcoming death.
*****
She hears mumbled voices, something about someone needing to rest. The voice offers to stay with her. Fingertips caress her cheek, and she feels lips on the crown of her head. Katniss finally feels whole again, and the feeling is directly linked to whoever this person is. She inhales deeply before reaching for the hand on her cheek.
Katniss hears a sharp intake of breath. “Katniss,” the voice whispers.
She smiles. This is the voice she was hoping would welcome her.
“Katniss,” the voice says louder.
She opens her eyes, her grey one’s looking straight into the most hypnotic blue. Growing up, she thought Prim’s eyes were the nicest shade of blue; however, they could not hold a candle to Peeta’s.
Katniss leans her cheek in closer to his hand. He even smells like cinnamon and maybe dill? She really is finally with him. Peeta takes a moment to wipe the tears from his own eyes.
“You’re really here?” she whispers.
He nods running his hand over the top of her head, smoothing her hair.
“Yeah,” he lets out shakily.
“And we get to stay together forever now?” she asks with a smile knowing that she is finally where she is meant to be.
He leans his forehead against hers. “I will never, EVER, leave you. I promise.”
“Always?” she raises her head slightly, her nose touching his.
“Always,” he assures her.
“I’ve waited so long,” she begins.
“I know sweetheart. I’m so sorry.” Peeta’s hand cup her jaw.
“I can finally tell you,” Katniss says dreamily.
“Tell me what?” he asks, gently rubbing his thumb along her cheekbone.
“I love you, Peeta,” she proclaims, closing the short distance from her lips to his in a light kiss. She pulls back to look at him, noting nothing but adoration. He only offers seconds of respite before he leans down, claiming her mouth with his. Katniss gives in, elated to finally be with her boy with the bread once more.
The kiss turns frantic, each exhibiting possessiveness that can only be quenched by the other. Katniss raises her hand to curl her fingers into his hair while Peeta cradles her jaw. At a slight tug of his hair, Peeta lets out a moan before using his tongue to beg for entrance. Katniss grants entry, their tongues now engaged in a sensual dance.
There’s a beeping in the background that causes Peeta to pull away. He moves to stand but Katniss grips the front of his…jumpsuit?
“No,” she says, terror in her voice. “I’m not letting you leave me.”
“I just have to-
“No, I love you….so much, Peeta.” The beeping is getting faster. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t say it when you were alive.”
“Alive?” A dawning of realization crosses Peeta’s face but before he can assure her, a team of medical staff rush in barking out orders and pushing Peeta back.
Katniss screams and resists every effort before she is restrained, her heart rate climbing to 180 beats per minute. Peeta is forcibly removed, fighting with everything he has to get back to the woman he loves…. who has finally told him that she feels the same way.
Outside, Peeta collapses to the ground and begins to sob while the brief light in Katniss’s heart goes out.
*****
Eventually Katniss awakes, and there to greet her is someone Katniss is assuming is a doctor.
“How are you feeling, Katniss?”
“Please kill me,” she begs.
“Katniss, I assure you, it is better to be alive.”
She shakes her head, “No…. Peeta is not here.”
“Peeta IS here, Katniss. He’s been here—”
“NO, HE IS NOT. HE BLED TO DEATH IN FRONT OF ME.”
The doctor injects something in her IV. Katniss is sure sleep will come…. but this time it doesn’t. She is just calmer.
“Peeta is alive Katniss. We’re in District 13.”
Katniss opens her mouth to argue, when her sister walks in, smothering her in a hug.
“Prim,” she gasps. Her mother walks in soon after followed by her mentor.
“But I died in the Games,” Katniss says.
“You blew out the forcefield,” Haymitch explains.
“It was all a part of the plan to get the victors out,” Plutarch explains as he casually strolls in.
“I’m alive?” Katniss asks.
Haymitch pinches her hard causing her to yelp and Prim to kick him in the shin.
Katniss breaks down in tears, realizing that while she is indeed alive and safe with her family, the exchange with Peeta had to have been some kind of dream.
“He really is gone,” she gasps.
“Katniss, the boy’s alive,” her mentor says.
She begins shaking her head when someone comes running into the room. She looks up and there is Peeta who crosses the room with purpose before cupping her jaw, a little roughly, and smashes his lips to hers. Katniss grips his wrists tightly, willing him to hold her there forever. The kiss is so intense and full of love and passion that Katniss doesn’t register any of their surroundings. When they pull apart, Peeta once again has tears in his eyes. Some have fallen from his face to mix with Katniss’s own. The only people remaining in the room with them are Plutarch, Haymitch, and the doctor.
“None of this was real?” she questions.
“Peeta getting shot in the chest was real,” Plutarch confirms.
“I can attest to that with how bad it hurt,” Peeta says, unzipping his jumpsuit and pulling up his undershirt. Katniss can see where he was shot, touching the raised and discolored skin with a whisper of her fingertips. Peeta pulls her hand away allowing his shirt to drop before he kisses her fingertips.
“We made sure when we shot him to just miss his heart,” Plutarch adds.
Katniss reels back and is scrambling to attack Plutarch while Peeta holds her firmly back.
“We had the hovercraft standing by to treat him. Snow was going to do something one way or the other and it was better to get him out when we did. He knew that Peeta was a more dangerous threat with his words than you could ever be.”
Katniss relaxes and breathes in Peeta’s scent to calm down. The calmness only lasts briefly before she turns to Haymitch. “Did you know?”
“Sweetheart—”
“DID YOU KNOW?”
Haymitch hangs his head in shame before nodding slightly. Katniss possesses a strength no one knew possible and breaks free from Peeta’s grasp, raking her fingers along Haymitch’s cheek, blood coating her fingertips.
A medical team swarms in but Peeta shields her.
“NO. No drugs. Everyone out.” The room gapes at him. “I SAID OUT, DAMN IT!”
Katniss sobs in Peeta’s arms, collapsing to the floor and dragging Peeta down with her. He lets her cry into his chest while he cradles her body and rocks her back and forth all while keeping an eye on the monitor which is measuring her heartbeat.
Katniss falls asleep, the rocking motion soothing her. Peeta places her back in bed where she sleeps for hours.
When she comes to again, her face is buried in Peeta’s neck, his arm draped across her stomach. She grazes his jaw with her fingers causing him to stir awake.
“You’re alive and here with me. Real or not real?”
“Real,” Peeta says with a kiss to her forehead. “You love me. Real or not real?”
“Real,” she answers before her lips touch his again.

Under the Rain
Written by: @nightlock-1989
Prompt 9: Canon-Divergent/ In Panem D12 “I waited for you” he said but she didn’t reply. He pressed for an answer he knew he deserved, “under the rain, Katniss. I waited for you, under the rain… why would you do that?” / “I can’t do this anymore, Peeta” / “Bullshit, you can but you just don’t want. I thought you were brave!” he yelled at her looking for any reaction that will give some hope. His tears threatening to run down his face. / She didn’t move, and she didn’t correct her, so he ran away and slammed the door behind him. / “I love you” Katniss said to an empty room. @alwayseverlark, I hope you enjoy what I’ve come up with for your prompt. This is part one that sets the foundation for what will happen in your prompt. This will be three parts.
Under the Rain- Part One- Rated T
16 years old
Not Prim, not Prim, not Prim, not Prim.
“Ela Fairsmith” Effie Trinket announces.
I breathe a sigh of relief and do everything I can to fight a smile. While Prim and I are spared, Ela, a girl two years older than me from the Seam was just reaped and is walking to her death.
Madge subtly reaches for my hand and gives it a light squeeze. She looks to me with a tight-lipped smile.
“Now for the male tribute,” the escort says with excitement.
Not Gale, not Gale, not Gale, not Gale.
“Pe-“ she begins.
I tighten the hold on Madge’s hand enough to the point she lets out a small hiss.
“-ter Edmund.”
I finally release the breath I was holding. It’s another boy from the Seam, slightly younger than me.
“Sorry,” I mumble. She removes her hand and sets it on my shoulder.
“You should go find your sister,” she recommends.
I move to walk away when Madge grabs me by the wrist.
“Are you going tonight?” she asks.
“To what?” I answer.
“The celebration by the meadow.”
“Why would I do that?”
“Gale’s last year; right?”
“I don’t think—”
“Just think about it,” she shrugs. “I’ll be there at 8:00.”
Her behavior puzzles me. Every year, the teenagers of District 12, gather in the meadow and have a bonfire, both Seam and Merchant, to celebrate the fact that they weren’t reaped. This is particularly popular among those who have aged out of the Reaping or have a loved one who aged out.
I’ve never been but I’ve heard the older kids whisper about it. People save any extra money to obtain some white liquor from Ripper, causing Haymitch Abernathy, her best customer to lose his mind one year. It’s not uncommon for girls to come to my mother for an herb concoction, finding themselves pregnant after the night at the Slag Heap.
For both classes, it’s their last true night of freedom, their final chance to be irresponsible. Tomorrow will be their final day of rest and later in the night, the only thing they will be doing is going to bed early to begin their life in the mines or in town.
It is Gale’s final reaping and while one would think he could breathe easier, it doesn’t. While Gale has aged out, Rory will be eligible next year, and eventually Vick and Posy. I’m lucky with just Prim. I don’t see why Gale would want to go to something so stupid.
I open my mouth to disagree while backing up, when I suddenly hit something solid and nearly trip. Hands grab my hips to hold me steady, but I shy away at the touch and immediately turn around to see who touched me. I look into the wide blue eyes of Peeta Mellark. I imagine mine are filled with fury.
“Uh, sorry. I, uh-um, I thought,” he rambles.
“I have to find Prim,” I spit out before storming off.
I see her smiling with her group of friends when I approach. She throws her arms around me and my heart warms.
“Ready to go home, Little Duck?” She nods and we go to meet my mother.
Later while enjoying an indulgent meal (for us anyway) of rabbit stew with the Hawthorne family, we are interrupted by a pounding on the door.
Hazelle goes to answer, and a frantic voice is asking for Violet, my mother. I hear a muted conversation and my mom informs us that a mother is expecting twins. Prim, a little healer in the making, offers to go. 8:00 comes around when Posy begins yawning, signaling time for bed.
Gale offers to walk me home, but I decline, and we make plans to meet early tomorrow morning.
I don’t live too far from the Hawthorne’s but it’s a nice night and I decide to take a walk. I become aware of someone around. I look and see Cray, the head Peacekeeper.
“Katniss Everdeen,” he says with a smug grin.
“Officer Cray,” I greet ducking my head down.
“Looks like the odds were in your favor.” Cray begins stepping towards me.
I continue walking but look up. “I suppose so.”
“What are you doing out here alone?” he asks curiously.
“I’m not…er, I won’t be for long.”
He slowly continues walking my way and I decide to turn right instead of continuing forward.
“Heading to the meadow?”
“Yes,” I spit out.
He’s still following me, and the meadow is now in sight. I quicken my pace.
“Big plans, Miss Everdeen?”
“Yep.” I look in the crowd, but I don’t see Madge. I do see Peeta Mellark, and he’s spotted me. I’ve caught him staring at me a few times over the years, but he always looks away. Tonight, he doesn’t. Does he recognize the tense body language? Can he detect the fear in my eyes from this far away?
I don’t hesitate before I raise my hand and wave quickly. He breaks away from his group and starts walking towards me. I notice the moment that he sees Cray lurking in the shadows.
“Hi Peeta,” I say in what I hope is my most cheery voice. I don’t want Cray to register the terror in my voice.
“There you are, Katniss,” he says with a huge smile, as if nothing is wrong. He sets a hand on my shoulder and I slightly flinch. His blue eyes pierce mine, silently telling me to go with it. “Madge almost had us send out a search party. You told us you would be here at 8:00,” the sound of his voice increasing slightly.
“My mom needed me to drop off some supplies. Mrs. Oatbrook’s having twins.”
“Well, let’s go find Madge so she calms down.” He guides me forward with his hand on my back.
“Breathe in,” he leans in closer and whispers. When we reach the other teens, I finally allow myself to exhale.
“Are you okay?” he asks, bending down to look me over.
“Fine,” I say shortly.
“Are you sure?” he bends his head down to look in my eyes.
I’m momentarily stunned. Have his eyes always been that shade of blue. I feel as if I could get lost forever in them before I shake the thoughts away. Why am I thinking about Peeta Mellark? I need to get a handle on this situation. “Damn it, Peeta. I’m fine. You don’t need to rescue me all the time,” I say storming off after I spot Madge engaged in a conversation with Delly Cartwright. She’s just nodding her head.
“Hi, Katniss. I didn’t know you were coming. I didn’t think this was your kind of thing,” Delly drones on and on while I try to calm down. I begin looking around for a Seam kid I recognize when I spot one of Gale’s friends, Thom. Okay, good. I’ll leave when he leaves. My house is along his route.
“Thirsty?” Madge asks.
I’m not even thinking straight or registering the odd, burning taste until it’s already down my throat, having been desperate to ease my dry throat. I must have drunk half her bottle but all I can do now is cough.
Why did that taste like peaches?
“Because it’s mixed with peach juice,” Madge laughs.
“Wait, what?” Did I say that out loud?
Delly begins laughing. “Have you ever drunk before, Katniss?”
“No,” I shake my head.
“May I?” Delly asks. Madge hands her the glass and she takes a drink and ponders. “What is that?”
“Something called vodka. I swiped it from my mom’s dresser.”
“Rye,” Delly calls. Rye Mellark is one year from aging out. The resemblance he has to his brothers is remarkable. When he approaches, I look him in the eye. His eyes are blue but not the same as Peeta’s. Ugh, I’m thinking of Peeta again.
“Delly, Madge,” he says with a brief hug. “And Miss Everdeen, this is a rare gift,” he says with a curious tone. His smile is also nice, but he doesn’t have Peeta’s dimple.
“Can I have your glass?” Delly asks Rye. Delly takes another sip of the peach concoction and a sip of whatever Rye has.
“Well, I don’t see how this could be stronger than Rippers.”
“What stuff?” he asks.
Madge hands him the cup and he takes a small sip.
“Yeah, it’s not,” he answers quickly.
“I think you’ll be okay, Katniss,” Delly assures me. What does she mean I’ll be okay? I didn’t ingest poison or anything.
I’m getting very warm. I begin to remove my sweater and drape it over my arm. They’re talking but I’m not even caring. Everything feels…. lighter? But at the same time, my body feels heavier.
“I feel better already,” I say with a grin.
“Not as strong but Everdeen’s little as it is. She’ll be feeling it in the morning.”
“But the night is so young,” I say with a puzzled look. “It’s warm and the fire’s hot.”
“Yeah,” he chuckles. “I’ll see you pretty babes later.”
Delly and Madge giggle like a bunch of schoolgirls…. wait, so am I.
“He’s so cute,” Delly whispers.
“Eh, if he’s your type,” Madge says.
“I just love his eyes.”
“I thought Prim had the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen,” I offer.
“Katniss, we’re talking about boys,” Delly adds.
“The floor is moving,” I say and grab for Delly’s hand.
“You mean the ground?” Madge asks.
“Sure,” I let go and begin heading towards the large rock that I sometimes sit on after I finish hunting.
“Nope, nope, nope,” Madge grabs my elbow. “This is my fault. You’re sticking by me.”
I scoff. “Why is everyone trying to take care of me? I can take care of myself. First Mellark, now you.” I wrangle free from her grasp.
“Wait, Rye was trying to take care of you?” Delly asks.
“No, Mellark,” I emphasize. “MY boy with the bread. If we have to-to-to- aren’t you warm?” Madge shakes her head with a smirk.
Her and Delly glance to the side and wave someone over.
“What were you saying about Mellark?” Delly laughs putting a finger to her lip.
“Yeah, the boy with the bread?” Madge encourages.
“My,” I gesture with a hand to my chest. “MY boy with the bread.” The girls are laughing loudly. “And if we are going to talk about boys, then Peeta’s eyes are the most prettiest blue. And his brother doesn’t even have a dimple.”
“I think that might be the nicest compliment I’ve ever been given,” a familiar voice says.
“Ugh,” I turn around and glare at Madge. “No more strawberries for you. Screw this, I can walk my own ass home. I don’t need you,” I point to Peeta, “or you,” I point to Madge, “or you,” I point across the fire at Thom. They all dodge out of the way as if there are tracker jackers around. Maybe I’m just flailing instead of pointing.
“What did you give her?” Peeta asks.
“We already EEE-STAB-LISHED this,” I emphasize taking a step forward, tripping in the process. A pair of strong hands catch me.
“Maybe you should sit down,” Peeta suggests.
“I was trying to go to my rock by the tree, but Madge wouldn’t let me.”
“I wasn’t going to let her go alone,” Madge explains to Peeta.
“Smart idea.” Peeta looks around and leans into Madge and whispers, “Cray was eyeing her.”
“I’m not sleeping with him,” I add.
“I know you’re not, Katniss,” Madge says with a frown.
“He can’t have me,” I proclaim.
“We know, Katniss. We just want to make sure you’re safe,” Peeta says.
“You and your savior complex,” I groan before marching towards my rock and plopping down.
After about a minute, I hear a loud gait approaching. “May I sit down?” Peeta asks.
“What if I say no?”
“Then I’ll walk over there,” he points to a tree not too far from my rock. “And keep an eye on you there.”
“I don’t need a babysitter. I’ve done just fine on my own,” I scold.
“I know you have…. Everyone knows that you have.”
“Fine,” I huff, crossing my arms. I relent and move my sweater so that he may sit next to me. I tilt myself towards him, one leg tucked under my knee. “Wouldn’t you rather enjoy the party?”
“And miss out on the chance to speak to the elusive and mysterious Katniss Everdeen?” he grins. “Never.”
“I’m not mysterious,” I say.
“Yeah, you are. No one knows much about you.”
“So?”
“So…. If we are going to be friends, that means we tell each other the deep stuff.”
“Deep stuff?”
“Like what your favorite color is.”
“You’ve crossed a line now, Mellark,” I reply staring at him causing him to furrow his brow before I burst out laughing. He joins me. It’s a nice sound.
“Mine’s orange,” he says.
“Like the fruit?” I cringe.
“Softer, more muted…. Like a sunset.”
“The sunset over the lake is beautiful,” I say wistfully before covering my mouth and looking around.
“No one heard,” he assures me. “Well, except me…. Do you see many of those sunsets?”
“Only once since my dad died,” I mumble. “Green, like the woods.”
“That’s very appropriate for the strongest-willed girl in District 12.”
I scoff, “There you go again.”
“Go again with what?” he smiles.
“The compliments,” I say before the silence begins. I chance another glance and look in his eyes. We’re further away from the fire so it’s not as pronounced but I still can’t help getting lost in them. “Your eyes, they are like…. I don’t know. You can’t describe it.”
“They’re just blue,” he chuckles.
“No, they’re not. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“How much did you drink?” he teases while I give him a light shove.
“I don’t know.”
“Moonlight,” Peeta says softly.
I look up at the crescent moon puzzled. “What about it?”
“Your eyes… the only way I could describe it is it’s like moonlight,” Peeta answers before taking a drink and cringing. “How the hell does Haymitch drink this all the time?”
“Let me have some,” I reach for the cup and Peeta holds it out of my reach. I lean forward, invading his space and reach for the cup. I put one hand on his thigh which causes him to still his movements. He lowers the glass and looks back at me. I flex my hand and remove it.
“One small sip,” he instructs.
“What makes you so sure I’ll listen to you?”
“Nothing, but I hope you trust me enough to heed my warning.”
“I trust you…. I think,” I whisper taking the glass from his hand and sipping before I spit it out.
Peeta laughs and takes another sip. I stand up, wobbling slightly, Peeta gently grasping my arm as he stands up.
“I’ve got you,” he says quietly.
The buzz is starting to fade. Maybe getting drunk was exactly what I needed because I would never be brave enough to say this sober.
“You always have,” I whisper. “Thank you for the bread.”
“Wait, from when we were kids,” he asks. I nod.
“Katniss, that was nothing. And I should have gone out- “
“Your mother beat you for it,” I interrupt.
“Katniss, it was fine. You were- “
“Peeta- “I try to stop him from saying more.
“No Katniss…” His voice fades as he continues to ramble about who knows what.
“Peeta,” I say but he just keeps going. I do the only thing I can think of to do as I stand on my tiptoes and kiss him on the lips. It does indeed shut him up. When I pull back his eyes are wide open and he’s staring at me as if I’ve grown two heads. Of course, he would be horrified that a Seam girl just kissed him.
“I’m, uh- “I freeze.
“Well, shit,” he says and then licks his lips before smirking.
“I—I have to go find Madge,” I mumble before storming off. I find Delly and Rye and I’m horrified. I can’t face anyone who looks like Peeta right now. I look into the crowd and I don’t see her face, but I do see her outfit…. and the back of Gale’s head. They are walking towards the Slag Heap. My jaw drops. I hear Peeta approaching.
“You okay?” he asks.
“My best friends are headed towards the slag heap? How could they?”
“I’m so sorry, Katniss. I, I know you’re with Gale—”
“What?” I interrupt.
“You and Gale, you favor each other.”
“No,” I say and shake my head.
“Oh…. Well, I thought—”
“You thought I was dating Gale even though I kissed you?”
“Well, drinking makes people do stupid things,” he offers.
“No, shit,” I say with a roll of my eyes. I begin to scan the crowd, looking for Thom.
“So, you’re okay?” he asks.
“Yeah. I just don’t know why they didn’t tell me. I don’t know how it even happened. He’s always whining about her and her townie ass.” I don’t see Thom anywhere. He’s probably at the slag heap too. I groan.
“What’s wrong?” Peeta asks.
“I’m looking for Thom so I can walk home with him.”
“I can walk you home,” Peeta offers.
“Then I’ll just owe you more,” I point out exasperated.
“Can we stop with the whole owing thing, Katniss? We’re friends, we don’t worry about owing friends.”
“Friends? I’m not so good at friends.”
“Yeah, but I know your favorite color. That means we are on our way to best friends.”
This causes me to snort. “Don’t you want to stay at the party?”
“Party or walking a pretty girl home?” he says with a tilt to his head. “Definitely going with the pretty girl.”
“I’m not pretty,” I mutter.
“You have no idea the effect you can have, do you?”
There is a loose tendril of hair that has come out of my braid. Peeta reaches towards it before stopping. He’s asking me with is eyes for permission. He takes whatever it is that my face is saying as a yes before tucking it behind my ear.
“Let’s go,” he whispers, offering me his arm which I surprisingly find myself taking. We walk at a leisurely pace back to the Seam. We walk along in silence before I stop.
“Peeta?” I ask gazing at his face.
“Yes?”
I open my mouth not sure what to say so I just go with what comes to mind. “What’s your favorite thing to do on a Sunday?” Sundays are usually when the town businesses shut down early in the afternoon.
He grins, “You’re going for the really deep stuff now. You know there is no turning back now. We are definitely friends after this.” He waits for an answer and I nod.
We continue walking while he tells me about how he likes to draw on any spare sheet of paper he can get his hands on. He tells me about how he sketches the things around him. A loaf of bread, the apple tree, the pigs, the town square. His favorite though is a dandelion. We walk in silence, the weight of his words in the balance.
We reach my doorstep and stare at each other. The silence is becoming painful, and I have to know.
“Why a dandelion?” I ask, already knowing the answer.
“You know why, Katniss.”
I nod. “I thought I’d lost all hope. That bread sustained me and my family until I realized I already knew a way to take care of my family…. That dandelion was hope…. And you lead me to it.” He doesn’t say anything. “Jeez, it must be open my mouth and embarrass myself day. Never mind, I’m drunk, I don’t know what I’m saying.”
“Are you really? Or has it worn off and you’re now lying about it?”
He searches my eyes, willing me to tell the truth. “I’m a little drunk, but I know exactly what I’m saying.” His gaze is making me vulnerable, and I hold my breath. Peeta steps closer. He’s in my space and my senses are overwhelmed. There are butterflies and heat in my stomach.
Peeta lifts my chin and leans down, his lips barely touching mine. “Will you allow it?” he whispers.
“Yes,” I say, the word barely getting out before his lips are pressing against my mouth. I don’t know what I’m doing but Peeta does. He cradles my jaw before he gently moves his lips against mine. I grab his shoulders so that he will stay rooted to me. We kiss for a couple of minutes, our lips dancing together. He doesn’t try for more. He is the first to pull back.
“Good night, Katniss,” he whispers grabbing my hand to press a kiss to it. He turns around and walks towards town. I head inside and lean against the door. What the hell just happened?
When I wake the next morning, I have a major headache and am slightly nauseous, even more so when I think about that kiss. What the hell was I thinking?
I try to clear my head in the woods, I really do but I’m missing every single shot. This has never happened before. Damn you, Peeta Mellark. I decide to get more strawberries for Madge before heading into town. When I reach the meadow outside of the fence, I notice the dandelions and I begrudgingly pull them out.
Before I know it, I’m at the bakery and I glance in the window. I see Peeta, and no one else. This is stupid but my body is clearly not listening to my head since I’m setting the dandelions on the doorstep and knocking. At least my body works enough to run off behind the apple tree where I hope Peeta can’t see me.
He opens the door and looks around before he looks down. He bends to pick up the dandelions and a wide grin appears on his face. Shit…. I’m in trouble.

The Forcefield
Written by: @nightlock-1989
Prompt 175:Katniss hits the force field in CF instead - Peeta’s reaction [submitted by anonymous]
To the anonymous person who wrote this prompt, I hope you enjoy this short little story. This is the third of nine prompts I have completed!
Rated T
The Forcefield
“Damn, it,” I growl. We’re surrounded by vines and I’m leading our group but the problem is that my prosthetic keeps getting caught. Somehow this one has wrapped all the way around.
“Everything okay?” Finnick asks.
“Yeah, just this dumb thing,” I grumble somehow getting myself tangled even more.
“Mags, I’m going to set you—”
“No,” Katniss barks. “If anyone is going to help him, it’s going to be me.”
“Have it your way, Girl on Fire,” Finnick mumbles.
I roll my eyes and smirk. Katniss passes Finnick and Mags. She rubs a circle on my back and gives me a small smile before handing me her bow and taking my machete.
“Try not to hurt yourself with this,” she whispers causing us both to laugh. She slashes through the vines freeing my leg.
“Help keep watch,” Katniss instructs slashing more vines. “What is that?” she asks.
“What’s what?” I ask.
She doesn’t answer me but continues slashing to the right of us. The next thing I know I’m being hurled through the air and crashing to the ground on my back causing the wind to be knocked out of me. I lift my head to see the weight on top of me.
“Katniss?” I wheeze. I push her off me. “Katniss,” I ask sternly. I turn her on to her stomach and shake her. “Come on, Katniss,” I plead putting my hand over her chest. I move my hand along her chest, not feeling a heartbeat. I lean down and hear no breathing.
“KATNISS?” No, no, no, no, no. She is not supposed to die in this arena. Haymitch and I agreed she was going to be the one to go home. I begin to shake her when I’m shoved roughly out of the way, causing me to tip over. I scramble back up and see Finnick with his lips on Katniss’.
“What the hell,” I shout and try to shove him. He dodges out of the way.
“Knock it off if you want her to live,” Finnick commands. Katniss’s logic is running through my head, telling me not to trust him but I can’t help it. I don’t have an option.
“Hold her chin like this and tilt her head back. When I count to 30, blow in and out twice. Got it?”
I nod tears beginning to run down my face. Finnick clasps his hands together and begins pumping into her chest, counting.
“29,30,” he counts while I bend down and breathe into Katniss’s mouth once then twice. Her lips remain still and her body lifeless.
Finnick continues pumping and I continue breathing. I have no idea how much time passes but my lip begins to quiver.
“Come on, Katniss,” I whisper. “Come on, sweetheart.”
“29, 30,” Finnick counts. “Breathe, Peeta.” I don’t move, continuing to plead with Katniss. “I said breathe, Peeta.”
He knocks me out of my daze and I do what he tells me to do. Finnick continues pumping and I hear a crack.
“What the hell are you doing to her?” I growl.
“Broken ribs are a hell of a lot better than being dead,” he says.
He continues pumping and I hear another sickening crack.
“Stay with me, Katniss,” I whisper.
“Breathe,” Finnick commands.
I breathe into her mouth again and remove my lips from her. “Stay with me,” I whisper quietly before breathing again. Before I can remove my lips from hers, she begins coughing.
The hugest wave of relief washes over me and I pull her up to me. I hear her mutter something.
“What?” I whisper, cradling her neck.
“Always,” she says. I pull my head back and look into her stormy gray eyes. Those eyes that were nearly burnt out forever. I kiss her and she kisses me back, I think maybe for real this time. I pull back and touch my forehead to hers. When I slightly shift her, she winces.
“I feel like an elephant stomped on me,” she says.
“Finnick broke some ribs when he was pumping your chest,” I say.
We both look to Finnick. Katniss has a look of confusion but I can already tell mine conveys gratefulness. Finnick is staring back at us with cautiousness before turning on his charm. Oh, yeah, there are cameras.
“Like I said to Peeta, better some broken ribs than being dead,” he shrugs.
Katniss and I look to each other and give small smiles.
Katniss was right. How are we supposed to kill them? But why would he save her in the first place? Maybe Finnick doesn’t want to be a piece in their games either. And if he doesn’t, how many other victors feel the same way.

Captain Strong VS The Mockingjay
Written by: @nightlock-1989
Prompt 170: Superhero/Catburglar AU: The jewel-thief Mockingjay has evaded The Capitol’s superhero, Captain Strong, for long enough, and the Merchants of the city have started putting pressure on the hero to bring the thief in for justice. The only problem? The Captain is the alter-ego of teenager Peeta Mellark, and his elusive nemesis is his high school crush, Katniss Everdeen. [submitted by @thelettersfromnoone]
@thelettersfromnoone I loved your prompt and I hope you enjoy what I did with it. This will have multiple parts. I’m not sure how many but we have to find out what happens next!
Rated T for language
Captain Strong VS. The Mockingjay
“PEETA, WAKE UP!” a shrill voice shouts from the other side of my bedroom door. Ugh, the opposite of what I wanted to wake up to.
“I’m up,” I holler. The pounding finally stops.
I roll out of bed and head to the bathroom I share with my brother Rye. He’s styling his hair and his eyes widen at the sight of me.
“You look like shit, Peet,” he says.
“Gee, thanks,” I mutter dripped with sarcasm while I reach for my toothbrush and toothpaste.
“Who did you sneak out to see last night?”
“I didn’t sneak out.”
“Yes, you did. You need to learn to be quieter.”
I lean my hip against the counter and point out, “Does it matter? Dad sleeps like the dead and mom takes enough sleeping pills that I’m surprised she isn’t dead. How she’s even awake right now amazes me.” I press my hand into the marble and hear a crack. Crap.
“What was that?” he asks.
I gently use my other hand to crack my knuckle.
He raises an eyebrow at me. “So which girl was it?”
“What girl?”
“The one you have been sneaking out to see?”
“I told you there’s nobody.” That’s a lie, there is. It’s the reason for all my sleepless nights.
“Fine, but one day I am going to wheedle it out of you,” he says with a gentle slap to my cheek.
“Driving yourself?”
“Yeah,” I say.
“Good, because now that I’m a senior, I can be having a junior cramping my style.”
“You don’t have any style.”
Rye brushes past me and I lift my hand from the counter noticing the crack. Great… I’ll find something acrylic to break and blame it on that or something. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror before jumping in the shower. I do look exhausted. The bags under my eyes are making me look older than my sixteen-year self.
I decide I have enough time for a quick shower. The warm water is running against my back. I let the thoughts of last night roll.
In the last year, I have successfully defeated 9 supervillains. Not too bad considering I’m only 16 and have only possessed my powers for about as long. How a swarm of tracker-jacker stings caused me to develop super-strength and a host of other small powers I’ll never know.
The last 6 months, the Merchant sector of Panem has been hit with a host of robberies by a cat burglar called The Mockingjay. My mentor Haymitch says that from what he understands, she doesn’t possess any actual powers.
She’s been stealing things. I don’t condone it or anything but there are more severe problems that need to be dealt with than a bauble of Venia Stone’s. Since I’ve taken out The Crane, I find myself on a bit of a break which is why I’m sitting here, in Venia’s apartment, waiting for The Mockingjay. We have The Cornucopia Diamond in plain sight. I think it’s stupid, there’s no way she would be dumb enough to go for this. The most expensive item she has stolen has been valued at $150,000 and that was for a diamond and jewel encrusted white rose brooch from Mayor Snow’s penthouse.
This diamond is valued at $3.2 million. I sigh, sick of sitting in my corner blending in. I’m thinking about the first day of school I will be having tomorrow. I wonder if I’ll have any classes with—wait a minute, something is off. One of my other powers was slight intuition or something along those lines. I call it my mutt sense, pretty much since that time I realized I was being stalked by these weird hybrid mutts The Gamemaker sicked on me.
I slowly stand up. I may be good at blending in but I still stomp like an elephant. I slowly begin moving towards the other room when I spot her. I activate my forcefield. This is it; I’ve got her. I continue creeping towards her as she puts a ring in the pouch on her hip. She has on a dark gray, almost black skin-tight suit that fits her like a glove. It’s long-sleeved and has cloth draped from the arms that gives the appearance of wings. Her ass looks fantastic.
“Anyone ever tell you that you have a loud gait?” the voice says smoothly.
Shit…. She continues perusing the small jewelry box, pulling out a diamond tennis bracelet.
“Anyone ever tell you you’re not as stealthy as you think?”
“Never,” she says still rifling through the box.
“You’ve been caught, you can stop you know.”
“And miss out on a chance of battling Captain Strong? Absolutely not.”
Her hair is in a braided bun, black mask of feathers covering her eyes.
“Let’s just make this easier on ourselves.”
She turns to look at me and I get that feeling of intuition again. There’s something familiar about her eyes, even if I can’t get a good look at them.
“Now why would I do that?”
I approach her but she dodges out of my way. Damn, she’s quick. I stalk towards her and we dance around each other.
We somehow make our way onto the balcony, it’s fine though the forcefield is around the perimeter of the building. If she jumps, she’ll just bounce right back. Suddenly, she opens her mouth and the voice of an angel comes ripping out.
No superpowers, Haymitch? I beg to differ because that powerful singing voice of hers could bust through even my strongest forcefield. Oh, shit it actually has. The damn mockingjays are carrying her off the 22nd story penthouse before I know what’s happening. The fucking birds have actually stopped to listen to her.
“Let’s do this again sometime, Captain Strong,” she teases.
I’m in the science hallway heading to my first class of my junior year. Chemistry. The bell already rung about sixty seconds ago so I hustle. As I enter the classroom, Mr. Latier says, “Mr. Mellark, how wonderful of you to join us.”
“Sorry, Mr. Latier.”
“Take the empty seat,” he instructs pointing to the middle of the classroom.
I glance towards the table and freeze with terror. Me…. Peeta Mellark…. Captain Strong…. a Victor of Panem…. is about to face his biggest fear…. being close in proximity to his lifelong crush Katniss Everdeen.

Peeta is actually the Mr. Mellark Mrs. Everdeen left behind to marry her true love when they were 18. They parted on good terms but Peeta just had to get out of town never knowing Mr Everdeens first or last name. 22 years later he returns and falls in love with frequent customer Katniss (who is of age) He brings out the playful side in her and she makes him feel young again. Katniss, who doesn't have a great relationship with her mother, doesn't tell her about the older man she's dating. While running errands, Mrs. Everdeen bumps into Katniss and Peeta, who happen to be engaged in a playful game of grab ass. Shock sets in for everyone. Does Mrs. Everdeen think Katniss is Peetas midlife crisis? Does Katniss' young age begin to nag Peeta? Huge bonus if Katniss freaks out because she realizes Peeta has fucked both her and her mom.

She's also bra shopping and taking photos to send to Johanna to get her opinion when she accidentally mixes up the recipients. She notices that she just hit send on the photo to Peeta by mistake (her boobs look amazing by the way, bonus points if it's sunset orange) Mortified she texts "shit, wrong person" What happens the next day at the office. Does Peeta think the pics were for a boyfriend? What's he thinking about during the staff meeting? Will Katniss be able to show her face?

Katniss and Peeta are in their 20s and Mrs. Everdeen and Mr. Mellark are getting married. Katniss has been falling for him after the monthly family dinners. She's about to speak up when Peeta brings a girl with him and introduces her to Katniss and Prim, "my lovely stepsisters" he says.
Oh yikes. That’s at least a few chapters worth to resolve the level of angst involved. I’m not sure I’ve got the time or brainpower to dedicate to that. Here’s a link to a story that’s already done and has a similar premise, although not exactly the same. I don’t think Peeta brings a girl to dinner and introduces Katniss as his stepsister in it, lol.
