Solstice - Oneshot by thesunrisesss
Description: Katniss and Peeta are still learning how to grow together. It's the first winter since the war has ended. Will they continue the traditions they once held with their families or will the memories be too much to bear?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did miss him. I sometimes allowed myself to think back to the moments in the games where I felt like I was truly in love with him, but I didn’t let myself think of it often. We were both healing. We didn’t know what our dynamic still was, but we were still learning how to be ourselves again.
He took my hand and we sat there both reminiscing over our childhood. We both took turns squeezing each other's hand, a reminder that we were both still there.
“I’m glad you’re here with me,” I said, finally breaking the silence.
“I’m glad you’re here too.” He said in a quiet, but content voice.
The Quiet Boy - Chapter 15 (preview)
Thank you to all my wonderful followers and supporters of my story. Your kind comments and messages have been uplifting.
Sorry that it's been a while since my last update but I'm happy to say chapter 15 is finally ready for posting on AO3. Now...if I can just remember how to do that. 🤔Kidding!
This chapter would most definitely be nothing without my beta extraordinaire and talented banner maker @sunsetsrmydreams. Thank you for your unwavering support dear friend.
Meanwhile...here's a little snippet;
“I love you Peeta Mellark!”
Peeta’s reaction to my declaration of love is nothing short of swift as his strong arms turn me and sweep me up as if I weigh nothing, twirling us both around.
“Put me down,” I cry out with laughter.
The world spins as Peeta does as told and sets me down carefully, his smile beaming from ear to ear. In my own euphoric and slightly dizzy state, what I say to Peeta next doesn’t register until the words have left my lips.
“Have you ever just wanted to shout out to the world? Like this feeling is just so big that it can’t be contained,” I tell him, catching his eyes. “We don’t have to be quiet here, Peeta.”
Peeta’s smile drops and his hold around my waist loosens.
I watch as Peeta’s gaze turns to where the picnic basket sits on the dry grass. To where I know his sketchbook, notebook and pencils have been carefully placed inside for the trip back home.
My racing heart instantly sinks to the pit of my stomach and I want to kick myself for being so insensitive.
“I’m sorry,” I start to say apologetically, stepping away from him. “I just want you to know you’re safe with me,” I declare.
Fic idea but too lazy to write it
Katniss is a Victor, and Snow tries to keep her in line
she does something to piss him off
he sends her a threat, something like a letter saying “he’ll kill the man she loves”, meaning Gale
Katniss bolts out the door, kidnaps Peeta ( not a Victor, just a happy little baker, that makes bread deliveries to victors village) and hides him by the lake, because Snow has the wrong man (Gale) and she’s scared he might get the right one (Peeta).
(yes, I was totally rewatching The Arrow, and the iconic scene where Oliver tells Felicity “He has the wrong woman”. To this day that was THE BEST romantic plot twist ever.)
So, this morning I found this little story in my notes... It was the story that ended the serie "The play of songbirds and snakes", the one with Katniss and Peeta, and I fogot about it until now because, well, I had to write about Katniss's parents and grandparents first... But since I don't think I will do it, I think I share the story with you all. It's short and cute. What do you think, I have to post it to ao3 too to end the serie? Even if I miss the other two stories?
Let me know.
This is the serie:
Story under the cut:
The boy with the bread
Katniss woke up that morning super excited, quivering with impatience, so much so that even Grandpa Coryo was exasperated. Grandma, on the other hand, laughed amusedly at the breakfast table.
"Go," she finally said, winking at her, "Go get ready and run off to school."
Being able to finally take leave of that endless breakfast, Katniss executed.
In Havensbee Hall all the students were murmuring excitedly, exchanging gossip and predictions.
It was, after all, Reaping Day.
Katniss went to sit diligently in her seat in the front row, trying to calm her heartbeat. Like every year on that occasion, one boy and one girl would be drawn from each District and invited to the capital to participate in the most renowned talent show in all of Panem. No volunteers were allowed, that was the funny thing, so in the two weeks before the show the Tribute, together with his Mentor, would have to work on some particular talent, to then present it to the public and thus attempt to win the Hunger Games, receiving in return honour, glory and even a hefty cash prize.
And she, a brilliant third-year student, had been chosen together with her classmates to take on the role of Mentor.
She couldn't wait to meet her Tribute.
Increasingly impatient, she watched the ceremony, broadcast live across the country. She could not take his eyes off the screen, one heartbeat at a time as the names were called and his own was not heard. But the Dean couldn't have forgotten about her, could he?
And there she was at last. The last on the list.
"The District Twelve Male Tribute will be awarded to Katniss Everdeen."
The District's master of ceremonies, a certain Effie Trinket, had just drawn the name.
"Peeta Mellark."
Katniss blinked twice, concentrating, as a blond, well-built boy took the stage.
She knew him.
She remembered him. He was the bread boy.
It had happened in the winter of her 11th birthday. Dad and Mum had decided to spend the holidays at the lake house, taking the opportunity to visit some friends. Katniss, who had little patience for social occasions, had slipped out of one of those gatherings unnoticed and started wandering around the neighbourhood, hugging herself in her coat.
She was doing something forbidden - and for that matter, exciting. Except, well, it wasn't like there was much to do in the end, apart from walking and freezing from the cold. Besides getting soaked, because a light drizzle had started to fall. So she decided to take a break, leaning up against the trunk of an apple tree to find a minimum of shelter. An inviting fragrance of bread hovered in the air: she had arrived near the bakery.
Katniss looked up and saw a boy peering at her through one of the windows; then he disappeared and she heard a thud and screams. Before she could worry about it she saw the boy coming out of the house, with a half-burnt loaf of bread under his arm and a red mark on one cheek.
"Hello!" he said, approaching her. Katniss knew she had met him before, but could not remember exactly where. The boy approached her and held out a hand, "I am Peeta Mellark."
"Katniss Everdeen" she replied, slightly wary, shaking it.
"I know."
Of course. It was obvious he knew who she was. The whole country knew, didn't they? She was the president's great-granddaughter, after all.
Perhaps a slight disappointment had emerged in his face, as Peeta hastened to point out “I remember you from first grade”.
"Oh?" had asked Katniss, taken aback. It was true that she had attended first grade in the District - her father thought it would be good for her to spend time away from the capital - and yes, she remembered now, that was where she had seen him before. A bright boy in her class, always cheerful and surrounded by friends, while she felt like a fish out of water.
Peeta had blushed, but had continued to smile.
"The teacher once asked who knew the Valley song, and you raised your hand so high! I heard you sing and I thought, well, I thought I'd like to be your friend," he concluded, blushing more and more.
Katniss didn't quite know what to say. Not that he had ever spoken to her in primary school, anyway, except for a few trivial conversations about homework and studying.
Peeta extended the loaf of bread towards her.
“Do you want it? It's a bit burnt, but it's nice and warm. I thought it might be good for you, given the less than beautiful weather.”
Katniss stared at the loaf for a long moment. It was true, it radiated warmth and it also seemed to smell very good. Suddenly she realized what had happened: Peeta must have dropped it in the oven, earning him a scolding and probably a slap, just so he could steal it and go outside to offer it to her.
She smiled. How could anyone refuse such a gift?
"Of course. Thank you," she grabbed one side of the loaf and together they broke it, then dug into the bread and began to eat. It was delicious, filled with walnuts and sultanas.
They stayed a few minutes like this, chatting as they shared the bread, waiting for the rain to stop. Eventually, as time continued to run out, Katniss took her leave of him and returned to the house from which she had fled.
She didn't want Dad to be angry after all. Peeta greeted her with a smile and she felt a surge of warmth rise in her chest.
That, however, had been their first and only meeting.
And now Peeta Mellark had been entrusted to her.
Katniss, considering how on edge she had been before the ceremony, remained strangely silent throughout the banquet, reflecting. What did she know about the boy, other than that he was kind?
Well, that back in the day he had started decorating cakes at the bakery, or so he had told her. Had he become good at it? Was it a talent they could exploit?
She couldn't sleep well that night, tossing and turning in bed, thinking about Peeta Mellark and their meeting. Five years had now passed. How much had the boy changed, during all this time? Did he still remember her, hearing her sing in primary school?
The next day, clean and combed and in a brand new uniform, Katniss went to the station to wait for the train to arrive, along with all the other Mentors. The crowd had been kept away from the platform and she nervously kept twisting her braid with one hand and twirling the rose she held in the other between her fingers. It was her great-grandfather who had placed it in her hand, as a 'good omen'.
The train arrived and stopped with almost surgical precision. One of the doors opened in front of her and Peeta Mellark emerged from it, hesitating as soon as he saw her.
"Hello" she greeted him, stopping to twist her hair. She handed him the rose "Welcome to the Capitol. Do you remember me? Apparently, I'm your Mentor."
Peeta, who had grabbed the rose, confused, blushed.
Katniss smiled. A flush of warmth rose in her chest again and she couldn't help but notice how cute Peeta was.
"Katniss" he greeted her at last, barely stumbling over her name "Of course I remember you. The girl with the nightingale voice" he blushed even more, saying it.
"And you're the bread boy" she replied "Did you get good at cake decorating? You know... For the competition. That could be your talent."
"You remember that" he murmured "Well... I'm an artist now".
Katniss took him by the hand. An electric spark passed between their touching fingers, catching her by surprise.
"Good, because I'm very determined to make us the Victors this year."
Peeta giggled, bringing the rose to his face and sniffing her scent, as the cameras panned on them and the photographers went crazy, blinding them with flashes.
"Peeta Mellark?" Katniss called back to him, shaking his hand "Can I take you to my home, to meet my family?"
It had been years now that the Hunger Games had worked this way; they had become a sort of student exchange programme, where boys from the Districts were hosted by their Mentors.
Peeta lifted the rose towards the audience, smiling and driving them wild.
"With pleasure, Katniss Everdeen. Lead the way."
Incomplete Fan Fics
When I started reading Everlark Fanfic I was only really interested in one particular niche: Cannon complaint, post-Mockingjay pre-epilogue. After reading probably the 74th version of the memory book I started branching out… not far, mostly to other cannon compliant Everlark fics… then to canon divergent… and so it began
Somewhere along the way I accidentally read an incomplete fic- Image my horror after staying up WAY too late to realize there was no ‘Next Chapter ->’ and there hadn’t been one in 9 years.
This was simultaneously devastating and exhilarating, because while I wish I knew whether authors intended ending, this story was a fucking delight.
Anyways…
Since then incomplete fics are some of my favorites. I have a list and I’m going to share it, starting with:
Lovefool by hotpielookedlikehotpie - this was said fic and the first Everlark AU I read.
It’s a romcom set in high school featuring your favorite Hunger Games characters acting pretty in-character
Bonus - there are outtakes! One of which: a prequel in Johanna’s perspective
What are your thoughts? Favorite currently incomplete stories?
Fic: We Protect Each Other (Everlark)
Written for the April 2023 Genres of fan fiction prompts.
Prompt: I wouldn’t be here if not for you (Relationships 3).
______________________________
Katniss is carding her fingers through Peeta’s blond curls and watching him sleep when his eyes fly open, suddenly. He looks so alarmed that Katniss thinks that he might have been having a nightmare. Sometimes, he gets disoriented when he first wakes up, so Katniss speaks in a low, soothing voice.
“You’re safe,” she says. “You’re in District 12 with me.”
She feels his body relax in her arms, but his face is still wary.
“I’m only here because of you,” he says, his voice groggy. Then, he looks at her more insistently. “I’m only here because of you. Real or not real?”
Katniss takes a deep breath.
“Well, I think it’s true that you came back to District 12 partly because of me—”
“No, I don’t mean that,” Peeta says, turning a bit so that he can look her in the eye. “I mean … I’m only alive because of you. Real or not real?”
“Oh. That,” Katniss says, with a bit of a laugh. “Well, I guess that I did save your life a time or two. So real. But you’ve saved me as well. In so many ways. Because that’s what we do. We protect each other.”
“Oh,” Peeta says and his brow wrinkles. He seems to be thinking over her words. After a minute, his expression clears. “Good.”
“Good?” Katniss asks.
“Good.”
He snuggles closer to her and closes his eyes.
TBOSAS Meta
This started as a couple-paragraphs-long Everlark & Coryo x Lucy Gray rant. It turned into an essay on the politics of systemic oppression and how we illustrate it in fiction, with The Hunger Games and Ballad as case studies. Regardless, I hope others enjoy, lol. This is where my brain lives, now, as I expect it will the rest of 2023. Cheers!
***
It’s been interesting, the last few days, some of the discourse that’s popped up around TBOSAS. FASCINATING political discussions, as I’ve come to expect for a Suzanne Collins release. (#1 in my heart.)
Personally, I always separate books vs. movie canon with her franchise. With the OG Hunger Games, sometimes I felt the films were better—like she got another pass at it and REALLY took advantage, and utilized the hell out of taking it out of Katniss’s first-person POV to develop other characters and the world (still without detracting from her narrative)—while for some details, I preferred the books.
With TBOSAS, though, the book and movie feel almost entirely different to me.
There are MANY shared elements, of course, and I feel either version gels quite nicely with the OG franchise. It’s not even that there’s that many continuity differences—some things cut or altered for time, sure, but the bones of the plot are the same. Both illustrate astute political commentary, Coriolanus’s descent into madness, Tigris’s shift in position on him (foreshadowing her full turn by Mockingjay), and Lucy Gray’s role in his life in both his initial downfall and his defeat by Katniss. The actors and creative team all did BEAUTIFUL work bringing it to life, and I honestly love both versions.
But fans who mainly like the book may be frustrated by the sympathy Coryo garners in the film.
Normally, I’d say this is because the book reveals more internal monologue—and it does. But honestly, one of the things I was most impressed by in this film was how legible the actors’ internal monologues were. It was clear, the amount of work they all did to that end. So I don’t know that it is just more. I think it’s also different.
Book Coriolanus devolves much earlier and more obviously. He starts from the same pressed circumstances and has moments of goodness, but he becomes the villain we know him eventually to be pretty damn fast.
Film-Coriolanus has a much slower descent. Ironic, honestly, given the film has far less time than the book does.
I think as a result of this, I’ve seen discourse comparing beats in his relationship with Lucy Gray to Katniss and Peeta. For example, that beautifully shot/choreographed/performed scene in TBOSAS with him and Lucy Gray on either side of the fence after the bombings that night, where they almost kiss and he asks her, “Is this real? If I’m going to risk everything?” being compared to Peeta’s long game of “real or not real” throughout Mockingjay. Everlark folks (rightfully) pointing out that for Peeta, the refrain is about shared trauma, especially between him and Katniss, and both of them grounding their relationship in mutual trust—while asserting that for Coryo, the same refrain comes from a place of selfishness.
I get where this opinion comes from: President Snow is probably one of the most violent, sadistic, genocidal dictators in modern popular fiction. His relationship with Lucy Gray started as transactional—even more acutely in the book. Nearly everything Book-Coryo does is for his or his family’s personal gain.
But to me, half the beauty and tragedy of the film is this delicious possibility—the hope—they showed us.
THG has always had a strong anti-war philosophy in general, with through-line commentary on showmanship, propaganda, surveillance and performance: The recurrent themes of cameras always bring on them, the arenas and entirety of Panem being a stage/game—and how those things impact authentic human relationships. Everlark hit for so many because of the ways authenticity bloomed out of that hellish, contrived pit. Coriolanus and Lucy Gray’s relationship started out similarly contrived: Thrown together by the politics of the Academy, the uprising, the districts, the Capitol and the Games—helping one another survive. Largely unlike Katniss and Peeta, they both played the game intentionally, to varying degrees. (Personality wise, these four really have almost nothing in common, lol.) Lucy Gray is a good person, both in the end and from her start (unlike the terrorist Coriolanus becomes). But she is a performer. He’s right about that.
So honestly, I don’t see much purpose in reading Peeta’s question as valid while Coryo’s wasn’t. I think that judgment is colored by dramatic irony—us knowing who they each become. But in theatre, we talk about living honestly in imagined circumstances. It’s used in a lot of acting techniques, but particularly for people playing villains. To stay grounded in the truth of it, you have to believe honestly in the imagined moment, not the gestalt; Leslie Odom Jr. was a great Aaron Burr because every performance, he believed in the whole journey, from hope to ruin. Tom Blythe was a great Coryo because he invested in the earnest reality of Snow as a young man, not the devil we know he becomes. And at that point in the story, at the cages that night with Lucy Gray, Coriolanus was honestly grounded in similar struggles as our OG heroes: Trying to provide for and protect his starving family. His family (and the Capitol at large) reeks of privilege, and his prejudices were obviously flawed. But in his developing love for her, he was steeped in starvation, the same political forces as lashed all citizens of Panem, and was clawing his way from beneath just as much Capitol propaganda as people from the Districts—perhaps even more so, given his Grandma’am and how his father died. Because of their given circumstances, politics bled into everything—but eventually, so did feeling, and they had several moments of genuine bonding, trust and connection which the actors invested in beyond their political need for each other. There’s a constant push and pull: Holding hands at the zoo for the cameras was political; her reaching for his hand in the arena visit was less so. The first “Stop treating me like I’ve already lost” in front of everyone was wit-soaked survival, while “Please don’t let me die in that arena tomorrow,” near-whispered and with hands held between them where the camera would struggle to see, bled into real vulnerability. Saving him from the other tributes in the cage-ride to the zoo was about survival; risking her life to go back for him when the arena was bombed was at least a mix. Her motivations for singing in her interview are complex—perhaps guilt that a “rebel” attack nearly killed Coriolanus, his advice she’d get the most money that way—but I feel strongly that a non-zero amount of her was motivated by wanting to demonstrate that she trusts him, which for her is even higher-prized than love. And I also feel that, after the hospital and her “final performance”—leading up to their near-kiss at the zoo—Coriolanus scoped out the arena (and ultimately took all those risks to help her cheat the Games) both because he wanted the Plinth prize, in theory, and because he increasingly desperately wanted her to live.
The waters between them were thoroughly, legitimately muddied—which I believe was intentional, that constant tension between authenticity and politics. And as much as he was falling for her, Coriolanus saw that Lucy Gray was just as clever and good at crowd-work as he was—maybe better.
So to circle all the way back to this Everlark comparison: Given the absurdly multilayered situation, is it really that selfish or unreasonable he would check in with her during that moment through the fence? That this child—wrapped in oppressive patriarchy, violence, starvation and propaganda—would ask for reassurance before he was willing to be vulnerable, or to potentially risk his family’s lives?
Some artists are hesitant to engage with the humanity of “villains,” their origins, because they feel humanizing them excuses them. In real life, I get this: Second chances aren’t always the answer, and people need to be held accountable. But isn’t it more powerful storytelling to demonstrate the corrosive nature of all systems of oppression in our fiction, to show how they can corrupt even those who try, than to condemn people before they’ve even had a chance? Isn’t the beauty of Lucy Gray’s whole thing that everyone starts out good, and it’s our job to choose to stay on the right side of that line?
And when President Coriolanus Snow finally chokes on his last rose, wouldn’t it be a more satisfying victory if we imagined him as a real-feeling person—full owner of sixty years of horrifying choices—rather than a cartoonishly evil cardboard cutout?
Book-Coryo has a more obviously manipulative/evil streak, much earlier on. To make it plain: He’s an ass, and his “love” for her reads more like obsession. But my favorite aspect of the film (and I feel one of the most compelling) was how it illustrated that these systems of oppression can make tragedies of almost anyone: All but those at the very, very top. Suzanne’s anti-capitalist politicking—how classism turns everyone below the 1% against each other, where the “upper middle class” (doctors/lawyers/actors) is vilified to the poor as a red herring while a handful of robber-baron CEOs amass almost all wealth on the planet—strikes again. She, Francis Lawrence, the film’s creative team and these actors came together to put tragically human faces on that struggle—how hard it is to stay a good person amidst intense, violent, systemic oppression.
But none of that sings quite as true if you go into it having decided that Coriolanus was evil in his bones. The stakes are so much higher, richer, otherwise. If his love—for Tigris, for his family, for Sejanus, and yes, for Lucy Gray—was, or became, authentic.
It’s not a descent into madness if he’s already mad. Or, as he put it in the original Hunger Games film: “Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear.”
Yesterday I forgot to post here this!
It's Snowbaird/Everlark story u.u time travel, magical vibes, sort of soulmate bond. Enjoy! 💖
At the end of the world
Summary:
Sometimes Lily would stare at her for long moments, her expression neutral. Katniss would return her gaze as long as she could bear it, then turn her back on her and walk away, leaving the room they were both occupying or leaving the house. She didn't know what was on her mind and didn't care; she didn't have to care, or there was a risk of lifting the comfortable veil of apathy.
Lily was just a ghost, a nobody's child from nowhere, a woodland spirit who clung to her orange shawl and ate at her table.
Nothing more.
At least she thought so, until President Snow himself came to visit her.
TWHHA challenge Summer’24
“This Would Have Happened Anyway” Challenge for Summer ‘24
Katniss says it at the end of Mockingjay:
“But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.”
So let’s explore “What ifs” and send your fics. The theme this time is DISTRICTS APART 🔥 and it can be Pre-Games or Post-Mockingjay… but it could also be pre or port catching fire
