while in the anime you get that madame red was sad and hurt over her sister, the manga better portrays her envy. however, I still feel at the forefront of her issues is grief. like I do think she she loved Vincent (or more likely an idealized version of him) and hated that her sister took him away, yet.

red seemingly indifferent after losing her husband, well that's after she got out of the hospital. like red just keeps going through something traumatic over and over, and who was at the forefront of her mind? her sister. her sister was the one to stay and help her recuperate from the hospital. her sister is the reason why she got married and have a child, and thus was happy. her sisters face at the wedding she remembers over and over. the sister she is so desperate to replace herself with. her love fuels her hate and her hate fuels her love and she's bursting at the seams she can't take it.

and yes she does love Vincent and all. but whose face is blurred out along with her husband's? And whose face in imprinted in her memory that she says she can never hate, that she can't go through revenge with?

likewise its her sisters face in Ciel that she did so much for, she joined the underground, she kept up the pretense for 3 years, she led him to their confrontation when they couldn't coexist anymore. one of them had to go. She's obsessed with her sister's existence, she's the one following her one step behind, if she can't have what her sister has, if she can't have her, then what's the point of it all?

Thoughts: So, uh, I read a lot of books this month. I leaned into beating my total from last year since I was close and read a lot of short reads, graphic novels, and the children's books I was giving for gifts.

There were some good reads this month, including two new canine narrators that I adore: Fox 8 and Snuff from A Night in the Lonesome October (which really should be a big tumblr book as it has Jack the Ripper, Dracula, the Wolf Man, a witch, a clergyman, a druid, Victor Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, a Rasputin-coded mad monk, and occultists along with their familiars scheming over the fate of the world).

One of my favorite books of all time is actually a YA novel- A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. Love story with a ghostly twist. Changed my LIFE as a teen. Still holds up as an adult.

My fave from more recent years is The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Period drama, Great Depression era, Dust Bowl. Strong female characters. Made me SOB.

My favorite series right now is definitely A Court Of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. These books are definitely hate them or love them. EYE personally love the world-building and storyline and hotsexy characters but what do I know 🙄 Would encourage haters to give em a chance.

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. FUCKED ME UP. BLEW MY MIND.

Survive the Night and Lock Every Door, both by Riley Sager. Easy reads, lots of suspense.

And Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. Storytelling at its finest!!!! Anything by Lisa Jewell is perfect.

The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund. Deeply chilling and so good. (cw sexual abuse of a minor)

Anything by Cat Sebastian. Most of her books are m/m but she’s got some variety. Tender bodice rippers. (Faves: The Soldier’s Scoundrel 😏, We Could Be So Good)

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. m/m. Fantastic Beasts vibes. Heart-achingly good.

Captive Prince trilogy by C S Pacat. The GOAT. m/m. (cw sexual abuse of minors, very dubious consent situations, sexual slavery)

For Yuletide this year, I wrote this pseudo-Vox article for @newtsoftheworldunite's gift. The premise is a modern-day feature article in the QT universe where Shakespeare wrote a play about the king who married the queen who cut off his hand, and what the modern discourse about their real relationship would look like in both historian and fandom circles.

I had a lot of fun with it, and I crammed it full of both fandom references and non-fandom references. I made a list of all the ones I could find when I reread it (I'm sure I overlooked a few), which you can check out below the cut.

Princess Bythesea novels by Phresine are a reference to in-world bodice rippers from @hoeratius's Princess Diaries AU, for which both she and @hippolytas have written fic.  

The Genny Diaries is a play on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries 

The Setran Eugenides & Ira is a nod to my beloved Bride & Prejudice, a Bollywood Pride & Prejudice adaptation (and imo the best P&P adaptation) 

Wikipedia talk pages are basically a discussion page on every Wikipedia article to help editors behind the scenes make decisions, fix citations, and discuss what should/shouldn’t be included on the page 

Clothing references: the birds and twigs are a canon reference (thanks, Pheris), the wild fennel robes are a nod to a comment on a post MWT reblogged that someone else later made art for (she also reblogged the IRL coats which are beautiful), and the “ornate, traditional” clothing was a reference to Greece's really stunning regional clothing.

The rings were inspired by posy rings, which were popular in England and France in the late Medieval period. The inscription on Irene’s ring—Yours to command—was a legit inscription I found on a list so you can imagine how fast I added it in.

The poem is heavily pilfered from Sappho fragment 94, although it’s been edited to pay tribute to the most beautiful woman on earth 

The “life size statue” fights were @hippolytas's idea (among other things in this fic, but that’s what I remember most clearly) 

The Friends finale reference is a little joke for myself. Ross/Rachel were *the* will-they-won’t-they couple of the 90s and 00s, and I told some friends earlier this year that I think if Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox had had 20% less on-screen chemistry, the romance narrative might’ve shifted to who Monica would ultimately pick and let that be the big finale moment (and, frankly, have given Ross and Rachel’s storyline more creating room—but I digress). 

The RPF fics are all references to QT fanfics. The missing scenes and wedding night fics are obvious, but the two AUs are are this sci-fi one where the Attolia AI trains the guard and one of my own, Where Did You Come From, Where Did You Go?

sorry, i thought i answered this! my taste is pretty varied. lately i have been reading a lot of non fiction. i recently read happening by annie ernaux which is a very difficult read but one i felt was important. i also really enjoyed unmask alice by rick emerson. for anyone unfamiliar or familiar with go ask alice and it's impact, i highly recommend it. i'm currently reading crying in h mart by michelle zauner which is destroying me.

i do enjoy romance as a genre, even some booktok romances are genuinely good. i absolutely adored the spanish love deception by elena armas. anything by helen hoang is incredible. i love the bromance book club series by lyssa kay andrews. and book lovers by emily henry absolutely lives up to the hype. for christmas i LOOOOOVED this book called in the event of love which is an f/f friends to lovers dream by courney kae.

when it comes to horror of course i love house of leaves, it's my favorite book of all time. it's not even a book, it's an experience. last october i read home after dark by riley sager which is my fav book of his thus far. i also enjoy grady hendrix work. for a more visercal read i would recommend nightbitch by rachel yoder or the vegetarian by han kang, but only if you have a strong stomach. those are books for hannibal and yellowjackets fans.

i don't read as many mystery and thrillers as i used to but i adored the 7 1/2 deaths of evelyn hardcastle, prob the most original mystery i've read! pretty girls by karin slaughter is the only thriller that i think actually lives up to being compared to gone girl, i read it in one night. mexican gothic by silvia moreno-garcia was incredible too.

if you just want some lit, i love if we were villians, my year of rest and relaxation, my dark vanessa, on earth we're briefly gorgeous. i also am a donna tartt girlie ngl so of course the goldfinch and the secret history.

i have a hard with sci fi but i enjoy andy weir, his humor makes it more accessible to me. i really loved project hail mary.

i'm really behind on ya but i love the grace year by kim ligget, and the whole stalking jack the ripper series by kerri maniscalo.

my favorite read of the year so far has been this book called black cake by charmaine wilkerson which resonate so deeply within me that i almost passed out when i finished it lol
