Oldies But Goodies
As they say, "You can't get where you're going if you don't know where you came from".  I thank my dad for the history lesson he has given me. Although it wasn't intentional. In his mind the only music that was worth listening to was the music of his era. He felt I was wasting my time listening to hip hop as it developed. For a time it was strictly forbidden in my household. Hot 97 didn't exist as far as my Dad was concerned. So I delved into "his music". To tell you the truth I love it. Anything Motown was amazing to me. In fact, for my Junior High School graduation, there was no better place for me to go than the now closed Motown Cafe in Midtown Manhattan.  Looking back, I realize that some of the themes may not have been appropriate for a little girl. By the time I was 12 years old, you would think I had invented the term "in my feelings" and this music was the soundtrack.  The Stylistics were a top pick. "I got a letter" was a musical mystery that I was determined to solve. "Break up to make up" got me through many teenage love affairs.  Earth Wind and Fire is probably Dad's favorite group. I base this soley on his collection of Kalimbas from around the world (again, no rhythm in our genes). Their music was so eclectic, it followed no rules. "Keep your head to the sky" was a challenge for my family as we fought to take turns hitting the high notes on our many roadtrips down to  Grandma's in South Carolina. If you want to dabble in their music, I suggest you start with "After the love is gone" and end with "Reasons". Then watch Will Smith's rendition of it for good measure. There are too many to name but a few albums that I have emerged myself in over the years are: My Melody and This is Niecey - Deniece Williams Donny Hathaway - Donny Hathaway  What's going on - Marvin Gaye ABC and Maybe Tomorrow- Jackson 5 Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin  Round 2 - Stylistics My goal is to share my thoughts and memories on music in hopes that you will be able to relate. These Are The Notes. Up Next: What's the 411?
