Why We Should Support Megan Thee Stallion
A timeline of events.

Nov. 15, 2022 02:57PM EST
Let’s make one thing clear, we support Black women– period. Megan Thee Stallion has become the latest example of the mistreatment Black women often face when speaking up for themselves. Since July 2020, when reports first surfaced that Megan, born Megan Pete, was allegedly shot by singer/ rapper Tory Lanez, she has had to deal with the dual trauma of the initial shooting and the subsequent harassment by Lanez, his fans, powerful people in the music industry, and the overall effort to discredit her.
Gun violence is an issue that continues to disproportionately impact Black women. According to a 2022 study, “Black women are three times more likely to be fatally shot by an intimate partner compared to white women.” (Megan has denied having an intimate relationship with Lanez.) During a particularly fraught time in hip hop, when we’ve lost so many artists to gun violence, including the recent murder of rapper Takeoff, it’s difficult to witness the continued minimizing and victim blaming of Megan by her peers in the business.
xoNecole has compiled a timeline of the events that unfolded following Megan’s shooting, including members of the industry who have seemingly undermined her story.
Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez: A Timeline of Events
July 12, 2020
Reports surfaced that Megan had been shot by an unreported assailant while with Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, his bodyguard, and Megan’s friend at the time Kelsey Nicole when leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s house.

Page Six exclusively reported that Lanez had officially been named as a potential suspect in the shooting. “Tory fired the shots from within the vehicle while Megan was outside trying to leave,” a source told the outlet. “There is video and the police are investigating. This is a case of a man physically harming and abusing a woman.”
It was also reported around this time that Megan unfollowed the singer on Instagram.

Megan gets on Twitter to clap back at reality star Draya Michele who went on a podcast and suggested that Lanez and Megan “had some sort of Bobby and Whitney love that drove them down this type of road" and joked that “I want you to like me so much you shoot me in the foot too."
“Dumb bitch that shit ain’t fucking funny who tf jokes about getting shot by a nigga,” Megan tweeted.
Michele would later apologize saying that her attempt at a joke fell flat and that "I truly don’t glorify domestic violence... I was trying to say just love me deeply."
July 23, 2020
Podcaster Adam22 reports that sources told him that Megan and Lanez were in a sexual relationship and that there was a flirtation between Jenner and Lanez at the party. Their interaction reportedly caused Megan to become jealous and start “violating his ass” and “really shitting on him.”That same day, rapper Cam’ron received backlash on social media after posting a transphobic comment about Megan saying, "Tory Lanez saw that dick and started shootn..IDC what no one say."
July 28, 2020
Rapper 50 Cent issues an apology to Megan after posting a meme depicting the Grammy award-winner as the character Ricky from the film Boyz n the Hood as he’s being shot.
“👀Damn I didn’t think this shit was real,🤦♂️It sounded so crazy @theestallion i’m glad your [sic] feeling better and i hope you can accept my apology. I posted a meme that was floating around. I wouldn’t have done that if i knew you was really hurt sorry. 🤷🏽♂️," he wrote.

August 21, 2020
Megan gets on IG live and confirms that Lanez allegedly shot her. “Since y’all hoes so worried ’bout it, yes, this nigga Tory shot me,” she said. “You shot me. And you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lying and shit. Stop lying. Why lie? I don’t understand. I tried to keep the situation off the internet, but you dragging it.
She continued, “You really fucking dragging it. Motherfuckers talking about I hit this nigga. I never hit you. Motherfuckers like, ‘Oh she mad ’cause he was trying to fuck with Kylie.’ No, I wasn’t. Like, you dry shot me. Like, everybody in the car – there’s only four motherfuckers in the car: me, you, my homegirl, and your security. I get out the car, I’m done arguing. I don’t wanna argue no more. I get out, I’m walking away. This nigga, from outside the back seat of the car, start shooting me. You shot me!”
She also addressed rumors that the injury to her foot was actually caused by broken glass. “I ain’t get cut by no glass, but let me tell you why they’re saying that: the people in the neighborhood –there’s a witness – when the police came because the neighbors called the police – this did not happen at Kylie’s house.” She continued, “This happened damn near back at the house I was staying at. I was just trying to get home. We were five minutes away from my spot. The police come and I’m scared.”
“All this shit going on with the police. The police are shooting motherfuckers for anything. The police was literally killing Black people for no motherfucking reason. Soon as the police tell us all ‘Get out the motherfucking car,' the police is really aggressive,” she explained. “You think I’m bout to tell the police that we – niggas, us Black people – got a gun in the car?! You want me to tell them that we got a gun in the car so they can shoot all of us up? Nigga, I’m scared.”
Megan performs on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest and she stops mid-performance to share a message about supporting Black women. "We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women, 'cause at the end of the day, we need our Black women,” she preached.

Lanez was officially charged with one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in a vehicle.
October 13, 2020
Megan writes an op-ed for The New York Times titled “Why I Speak Up for Black Women.” The article states: “I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man. After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship. Truthfully, I was shocked that I ended up in that place.
My initial silence about what happened was out of fear for myself and my friends. Even as a victim, I have been met with skepticism and judgment. The way people have publicly questioned and debated whether I played a role in my own violent assault proves that my fears about discussing what happened were, unfortunately, warranted.”
October 20, 2020
Lanez gets on IG live to discuss the aftermath of the shooting and says that he still considers Megan to be a friend even if she doesn’t but that “I know what happened, and what you’re saying, what the alleged things and the alleged accusations of my name is, are not true. It’s falsified information. It’s false information.”
Megan responded on Twitter saying: “This Nigga genuinely crazy.”

The “Savage” artist’s former friend Kelsey Nicole, who was one of the passengers in the car the night of the shooting, released a diss track to Megan titled “Bussin Back” where she rapped “Never been a jealous friend and the people really know it/If you would'vе kept it silent then I would'vе been told it/ See I really thought I knew you, thought that you would keep it G/ If you wanna talk gangsta, bitch, I'm really from the street.”

Lanez's lawyer drops him as a client, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The lawyer had been defending Lanez against assault allegations made by Love and Hip-Hop: Miami cast member Prince.
October 31, 2022
A judge in Los Angeles ruled that Lanez had to be placed on house arrest until the trial after Lanez was found in violation of his parole due to allegedly assaulting August Alsina in September.

On his collab album Her Loss with 21 Savage, Drake raps in the song “Circo Loco,” “This bitch lie 'bout gettin shots but she still a stallion/ She don't even get the joke but she still smilin'” a line that many people think is in reference to Megan.
The H-town rapper responded to the lyric by tweeting, “I know I’m very popular but y’all gotta stop attaching weak ass conspiracy theories in bars to my name lol Niggas nor hoes EVER address me or @ me WITH a fact or receipts. I AM CLOUT BITCH keep sucking my pussy.” https://www.xonecole.com/megan-thee-stallion-shooting/megan-thee-stallion-and-tory-lanez-a-timeline-of-events

Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."
Congrats to all the nominees!

🕊🎶#ArtIsAWeapon #GregTate "Celebrating Greg Tate: More Than Posthuman: Rise of the Burnt Sugar Arkestra Mojosexual Cotillion" this Sunday, July 17, 2022, 7:30 PM (doors open at 6:00 PM), @lincolncenter #SummerForTheCity. Limited advance reservations: www.lincolncenter.org/series/summer-for-the-city/celebrating-greg-tate-more-than-posthuman-rise-of-the-burnt-sugar-arkestra-mojosexual-cotillion **This celebration honoring Greg's life and legacy will be live-streamed for folks who are unable to attend - go to Lincolncenter.org ** Reposted from @lincolncenter: Gregory Stephen Ionman Tate (1957-2021) was a giant of Black radical thought and creativity, and a conductor of incandescent, community-driven music. Tate's body of writing as an influential critic would be enough to enshrine him as a cultural icon, but he is equally important to a generation of musicians as both the co-founder of the @blackrockcoalition, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the complete creative freedom of Black artists; and the creator of @burntsugararkestra, a sprawling, omnivorous, and outrageously accomplished improv collective. Reposted from @burntsugararkestra - For this homecoming concert, curated & presented with The Tate Family at one of his favorite venues, more than thirty Burnt Sugar Arkestra members will perform in celebration and tribute to one of the most essential voices in the history of 21st Century Avant Groidd music and thought. On the same day, The Tate Family, Lincoln Center, and Photoville will honor Tate's life and work with the presentation, “In Praise of Shadow Boxers, Dissonance & Dissidents: A Pop-Up Tribute Exhibition to Greg Tate”. The exhibition will feature six-foot prints by 24 artists with whom Tate was in community and whose work he championed. Each image is accompanied by a personal statement by that artist about Tate. The band: Liza Jessie Peterson – MC, Freedome Bradley – MC, Pastor Kaji Dousa – MC Vernon Reid – Conduction, Lisala Beatty – Vocals, Shelley Nicole – Vocals & Conduction, Bruce Mack – Vocals/Synthesizer & Conduction, Karma Mayet – Vocals, Abby Dobson – Vocals, Sequoyah Murray – Vocals, Shariff Simmons – Vocals, Simi Stone – Violin, Satch Hoyt – Flute & Percussion, Lewis “Flip” Barnes – Trumpet, Avram Fefer – Soprano Sax, V. WANTED! FC can be changed!
Name: Kayla Porter-Dixon Age: 19 Sexuality: Heterosexual Gender: Female Portrayed By: Dakota Fanning Availability: Open
“I don’t like to think about it, it’s all too scary.”
→ Background
Stella’s little sister Kayla has never been as.. wild as her older sister. Kayla is very serious and very studious a lot of the time. She wants to do well in her education and is often found with her nose in a text book, scribbling revision into little notebooks, or winding down with a good novel. Unlike her sister, Kayla has always been closer with the Porter side of her family than the Dixon side. Maybe because she always felt more like a Porter than a Dixon. She liked going to fancy parties with her mother and dressing up, hanging out with her cousin Alicia, even Diana though she was older. The only one she didn’t really get along with was Josh Cox, but she didn’t think Diana did either. She figured Josh liked to keep to himself more or something like that.
Kayla doesn’t like to think about the way Annie Pierce and the rest of the poor victims of the killers died. It’s all too complicated and too horrible to really entertain. She’d much rather lose herself in a book world than think too much about the real one because it makes her sad. Especially since her cousin Alicia was one of the victims. She always liked Alicia best, she was ditzy but it was endearing somehow. Since the funeral, everyone’s been very down, especially Alicia’s dad… Kayla doesn’t know how to help and feels awkward so she’s withdrawn a little bit from the Porter’s, though she feels a little bad about that. She’s been dodging her mum’s events and keeping her nose in her books.
→ Back to Baberton
She recently got a part-time job in a book store called Between the Lines, one of her favourite places in town, and has befriended colleague Nicole Archer. Nicole loves books too, though she seems to prefer them to people. Kayla has noticed that Nicole seems to be alone most of the time, especially since her best friend Gemma Harris moved away to London, and since Kayla doesn’t like the thought of anyone being lonely, she’s made it her mission to make sure Nicole knows she’s there for her as a friend. It’s not all out of pity though, Kayla does like Nicole. She feels like they’re quite similar and would make good friends.
When Kayla isn’t working or studying, you can usually find her with her friends. She likes to be social, though maybe she’s more withdrawn than her sister, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t like being around her friends. She hangs around with Wendy Irvin and Mason Peterson a little, and sometimes Emma Williamson since they know each other from work. Kayla is interested in pushing herself to joining a few clubs around town and maybe getting to know some more people as she can have a habit of feeling left out, which she doesn’t like as it makes her feel lonely and disconnected.
→ What’s Her Secret?
She has a secret online boyfriend called called Aaron Hopkins who she believes she is madly in love with. He’s a fair bit older than her, in his late thirties, and she knows that her father would never approve but she really wants to be with him. She’s been planning to run off with him and find some dream, fairy tale ending, but if she realised he was only playing with her, she’d be heartbroken. Aaron only likes her because she’s young and impressionable and he’s been talking her into doing things like sending him indecent photographs and going on camera semi-nude for him. Little does she know he’s been recording it and plans to sell the images and videos to a website for some extra cash.
Wishes she were, simply, more interesting. Kayla feels ultimately boring and like there is not much to her in general. Lacking in personality and interesting traits. It makes her unhappy and she doesn’t know how to change or come out of her shell a bit more. Her sister (and cousin Lacey even) is pretty and confident and funny and outgoing and it makes her feel a bit pathetic. Not that she thinks that partying it up every night is really for her… but maybe it could be if she really tried?

Red, White + Hot Pink All Over: It’s a Retro I Love Lucy-Inspired Valentine’s Day Wedding!
Any I Love Lucy fans out there?! We thought it was about time that we saw the lovable antics of Lucy + Ricky Ricardo translated into the colorful wedding world…don’t you agree? When visiting The Harper, a new venue in Costa Mesa, Holly at Anything But Gray Events kept thinking how perfect the muted-tone backdrop of the venue would look with a splash of color. She shares: I love the juxtaposition between the black, white and grey venue and the technicolor styled shoot. To me, it was reminiscent of when I Love Lucy went from black and white film to technicolor!
While we wanted to keep true to the images you see on the show, we wanted to update the look with modern and trendy touches for today’s current audience.
Alright, sweethearts! Let’s see how they brought the 1950s into the present in the photos Peterson Design & Photography snapped. Shall we?
The Details
It was all about creating a contemporary meets retro look for this invitation suite from Roseville Designs.
Pink, on pink, on pink!! The best way to do this? By adding tons of different textures, of course!
How brilliant is this bouquet Winston & Main crafted? Ranunculus + anemones are some of our faves!
The Sweethearts
Too stinkin’ CUTE!!
This custom pink number, created by Rmine, was specially made for this shoot to resemble some of the “modern women” pant ensembles that Lucille Ball wore over the years. It is not a dress but actually two pieces: a chiffon top with an oversized belt and palazzo lace pants.
Come Away With Me… The Skyline Backdrop!
Holy smokes!! Paper Moon Shoppe is the genius artist behind this masterpiece. The backdrop was designed to resemble the fire escape on the back of Lucy and Ricky’s apartment that you would often find them standing on. This 3-dimensional, 15+ foot design was covered in hand-painted details.
Isn’t this such a fun idea?!
Talk about DREAMY.
The Retro Tablescape
We love a good balloon arch, and Balloonzilla didn’t disappoint! Want to see other ways you can incorporate balloons into your big day…or perhaps DIY your own floral balloon arch? We’ve got just the thing(s)!
Poppin’ PINKS and heart-shaped napkins (because why not?), the team created this fun look with pieces from Signature Party Rentals, Collective Rentals, and BBJ Rentals.
Cocktails + Cake
Tying in the city skyline + the heart-shaped balloons, Nicole Bakes Cakes crafted this confectionary delight.
A Truly Vintage Affair
We know what you’re thinking…how did they manage to nab that retro pink TV?! It’s from Party Pieces by Perry and we think it’s the cutest thing ever.
Fun Fact: Holly’s grandfather, Hans Conried, played many recurring characters on I Love Lucy and was a dear friend of the real Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz!
Cate Ruby Torrealba got ‘Lucy’ looking picture perfect for the camera. Hello, bold brows + coral lips!!
And they brought in a vintage car from Vinty! Isn’t this ride adorable?
A vintage car, the sweetest sweethearts, floral garland, and tons of balloons—what more could you want?
How darling was that?!
We’ll leave you with these wise words from Lucille Ball, herself: “Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”
Happy Valentine’s Day to all you sweethearts out there!

Anne Hellen Peterson is a writer for Buzzfeed and a few weeks ago published a great profile on Charlize Theron. (Go read it — it's really good.) In her newsletter this week, she wrote a bit about her process and what goes into researching a piece like this:
I spent the last two weeks deep in the archives of Charlize Theron, reading every interview and profile, reviewing her social media, and watching as many films from her past as I could — some of them weird, some of them deeply forgettable, some of them masterpieces, like Young Adult, which is so pitch-perfect in its evocation of late 2000s self-obsession and pretty girl privilege. These deep dives (a word I don't love, but what else describes them? Extensive explorations of a star's career and ideological meaning?) are one of my favorite things to do, celebrity-writing wise, and in the three years since coming to BuzzFeed, I've done them on the images of Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg, Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Zac Efron, and Angelina Jolie.
In academia we call these "star studies," and it's a very easy format that requires a deceptive amount of time to complete. It seems increasingly important to "show our work" as journalists, or at the very least be diligent in explaining the tactics/understandings that journalists take for granted (see: anonymous sourcing). Most of this imperative to "show your work" applies to political journalism, but I think it also extends to online writing as a whole. The speed with which blogs posts and content on sites like The Hairpin were produced helped create an understanding that all writing could be done incredibly quickly, eliding the way that the best, most enduring content, even if it was written in a few hours, sprung from years of experience, years of developing sources, or years of accumulated research. It might have been quick to write, but it was not quick to get to the point that you could write like that.
I love the insight into how she organizes in Scrivener — it reminds me of when Ta-Nahisi Coates posted screenshots of his Scrivener workflows when we was writing Black Panther. (Also pairs nicely with this weekend's post on editing poetry. As you can see, I've been thinking a lot about editing lately.)

If you are walking into the labyrinth of artists and creative fellowship applications, you are in for quite a journey, one that could be difficult, delightful and daunting.
So bring along a guide and possibly a co-pilot, and read the instructions and rules carefully.
In Detroit, dozens of artists and writers are hurrying to finish their Kresge Artists Fellowships application by or before the Jan. 17 deadline. They are lured by the opportunities for professional development, to be in the spotlight -- and the $25,000 no-strings-attached stipend.
More than 500 visual artists will apply and between 200 and 300 literary / writing creatives. Kresge Arts judges choose nine winners in each of the two categories.
Applying is time consuming and yet the process may reveal some things about your goals or yourself, said Christina deRoos, Kresge Arts in Detroit director, at an information session. After you’ve finished the application, she said, “make a commitment to yourself - that’s a little bit of a stretch.”
Here’s other advice that may be useful for applying to Kresge and other artist fellowships this year:
The work really matters.  Your work samples, up to eight pieces, are crucial because in the first round of Kresge Arts evaluation, panelists may look only at the samples and descriptions. (Some may choose to go deeper but that doesn’t seem like it will be the norm.) “Use description fields really well,” said Christina deRoos. Give context and “make the connections” in those descriptions, added Nicole Peterson, Kresge Arts operations manager.
Choose work carefully.  If your work spans decades, share “your pivotal work” and be sure that plenty of pieces current, from recent years, said Peterson.  Kresge will accept work in progress, but it needs to be presented cleanly and be sure to include competed work as part of the samples too. It’s up to the creative applicants to submit either a cohesive body of work or to select a wide and eclectic range of pieces.  In some cases, it may make sense to create a “composite image” showing the entire work with an inset detail shot.
Know your why and show your passion.  With your work and the details on your artist resume, know the reason you’re sharing a detail. Think about the readers and judges and ask yourself: “What do you really want them to take away?” said deRoos at a Kresge Arts question and answer session.  Ask  “Why is it important? Why is it relevant?”  And definitely include the fun, the “passion and energy” you have for what you are doing.
Here are my two suggestions for artists and writers, based on my years as an editor and judge for a number of competitions and my work helping artists with this year’s Kresge application:
Peel the onion.   Almost every creative person has layers to their personality and work. So take time to reflect on those hidden aspects to your work, and consider who you are and who you are becoming. Create a journal or jot down notes or sketch your observations. Pull out your goals or work from three years ago to see what seems important and how you’ve changed.  Take time to understand yourself and you will reflect yourself more completely and authentically in your application.
Find fresh eyes.  Get a second and  a third person to review the key parts of your application. One way is to work with another artist or creative and help them as they help and read your application. Choose someone you respect, someone who will read and understand the details on the application, so their advice is targeted to what the foundation or group is seeking. (I offer this service for artists and creatives occasionally, though I am full for the current Kresge Fellows. I am willing to take on new clients starting in March.) Choose people with a background in arts or culture - or whatever area your fellowship is in - or find an editor or someone who has judged the competition in the past. Then make sure you finish your application in time to make adjustments and improvements based on their feedback.
My last bits of advice are:  Play to your strengths and edit yourself relentlessly. Cut down and clean out unnecessary items. Shorter really can be better. (And read the rules. Read the Kresge FAQs for more information and Kresge staff are willing to answer questions by email too.). Good luck!
