Filmmaker-A-Month: Nicole Holofcener- Wrap Up

A shorter list of films this month, which was great because I was moving to a new apartment and working a lot, as well as trying to finish up my Oscar watch- but what an enjoyable list. Holofcener is a great writer and I really dig her characters. Ranking is above and here are some thoughts:

Her early few films definitely have that mid-late 90s vibe and I can see why she came out of the gate as an indie darling or whatever. 

The 2 films with Julia Louis Dreyfus are so good. I really love them. When I saw You Hurt My Feelings 2 years ago i felt like I related to every character in the film. It’s also nice to see the guy from Succession and Spider-man as a nice guy.

I’d had Enough Said at the top of my watch list for quite a while and have thought about putting it on several times. It was the whole reason I picked her as the director this month. As soon as it started I realized I did see it when it came out. How did I forget that? 

For my extra credit I watched Can You Every Forgive Me? And Every Secret Thing, two films she wrote but didn’t direct. The former is great, the latter is… not. She also wrote The Last Duel with the Matt Damon mullet, but I didn’t get to it this month. I’ve seen it before and it’s really great.

Next month will also be a shorter month but after that I should be good to get back on a longer filmography schedule. Clue later today (but it’s a very easy one).
