Brother Philippe's Geese
Artist: Nicolas Lancret (French, 1690–1743)
Date: ca. 1736
Medium: Oil on copper
Collection: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY, United States
Description
Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables include the story of the widower Philippe, who adopts a hermit’s robes and retreats to a mountain cave where he and his son live free from temptation. Eventually, however, Philippe takes his son out into the world and they encounter a party of young women. When the youth asks about them, his father says they are “a party of geese.” “Father, I beg you, let us take one [with us].” Lancret indicated the women’s elevated social status by including the likely enslaved African servant who shades them with a parasol.

Portrait of the Actor Grandval
Artist: Nicolas Lancret (French, 1689–1743
Date: circa 1752
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana
Description
Lancret's interest in the stage, evident in his insightful portraits of actors and dancers, may derive from his early training in the studio of Claude Gillot, director of scene designs and costumes for the Paris Opera. In this portrait of the actor Grandval, one of the best known performers of 18th-century Paris, Lancret alludes to his renowned ability to perform both tragic and comic roles. Grandval stands in an imaginary garden in front of a statuary group that represents Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, and Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy.

Lovers in a Landscape (The Turtle Doves)
Artist: Nicolas Lancret (French, 1689–1743)
Date: c. 1736
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham, England
Description
A young man gazes at his elegantly-dressed partner and points to a pair of turtle doves.
The birds are the perfect model of faithful lovers who reciprocate their feelings with tenderness. The couple’s romantic encounter in an idyllic landscape is not therefore a scene of seduction, but an image of true love soon to be fulfilled. Lancret was a follower of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) who popularised what is known as the fête galante – an amorous gathering of elegantly dressed figures in an idealised landscape. This was the first painting purchased by the Barber Institute.
