There's a certain bond that Jack has with Nicola. At first glance, it doesn't seem significant; after all, the gravity of bearing the Queen's dismembered pieces takes its toll upon all who participate. To be a Successor entails great agony and strain. The knowledge of one's imminent demise drives many to ruin. With Nicola, however, there is a hopefulness and willingness to protect the most important person in his life. In the Fionn vestiges, Jack demonstrates a warmth he so often hides from those around him. It is here that we get the privilege to observe a more paternal, perhaps even brotherly side.
Of all the known Successors, Nicola is noted to be steadfast and strong-willed, capable of maintaining self-control even when succumbing to frenzy. Despite the insurmountable odds stacked against him, Nicola forges a path ahead, never once complaining about the circumstances that brought him to that point. Jack remarks about his noble spirit and how he is the bravest one he knows -- qualities that he rarely saw in the Successor program.
Many of those who had previously volunteered had maintained a solemn resolve, understanding that entombing a Relic within themselves would only lead to their demise. When that fateful time did arrive, some balked at the mere notion of death. Perhaps the Queen's corruption influenced more than just their blood. Countless others begged for the Executioner's wicked edge, imploring Jack to liberate them from their torment. There were those that fought back; these were the worst of all, almost as bad as the marauding crowds roving Vein. These individuals were to be quickly dispatched, else they escape their Crypt and cause no shortage of chaos. For someone to willingly participate as a Successor and retain their honorable ideas was almost unheard of. This rare demonstration of character goes a long way towards earning Jack's respect -- a difficult feat most could not achieve.
Nicola, in a curious fashion, draws out Jack's more protective side. There is a gentler quality to Jack present in Nicola's vestiges, and in some aspects he seems to act a bit playful. However, this changes once Jack reunites with him in the Howling Pit. Before the encounter, it is possible that Jack may have spotted Nicola alongside Mia and chose to tail the duo. When he finally catches up, he taps into the Relic of the Eye to confirm his suspicions. Once he does, it is more than evident that Jack is anguished at the revelation. Perhaps by destroying the copy, he had hoped to buy Nicola more time, but it doesn't seem like it sat well with him, either.
Of note, Jack does not appear around the Ridge of Frozen Souls outside of the Fionn vestiges. It is likely that he could not bear the thought of slaying Nicola. To pursue Mido, in Jack's mind, may have been the more bearable option to handle at that point. However, the guilt of leaving Nicola to suffer might have served as a distraction in the Ashen Caverns. Ensnared within his stress and turmoil, Jack was a prime target to be ambushed, and this was likely something he berated himself over.
It is possible that Jack leans towards the option of adopting Nicola. As Carmilla's vestiges demonstrate, taking on younger revenants and caring for them aids in the retention of a senior revenant's humanity. Improvised familial units in more civilized areas and provisional government shelters alike offer hope to revenants struggling with themselves. A revenant terrified of losing their mind, either in battle or through great hardship, could possibly find stability in being taken in by another group or by adopting another.
Should Nicola survive, Jack downplays his gratitude. He is pleased about Nicola's reunion -- of that, there is no doubt. Perhaps he's a little envious, but more than anything else, he's relieved to find Nicola safe and sound. Jack trusts the Protagonist enough in this aspect and maybe, just maybe, that was the other reason why he did not arrive in person before. He most certainly jumps into the opportunity of raising Nicola himself, eager to train him in combat following the Good and Golden Endings.
If Nicola doesn't survive, Jack likely doesn't take the news well, outright shutting down afterwards. What few moments he has to himself between exploration, combat, and rest would be spent grieving in silence. His sorrow dogs his steps, as it has always done... as it will continue to do. He might be more understanding of the Protagonist's actions; after all, there might not have been any option left at that point. A mercy kill was often the last resort, and the most kindest. In private? All Jack can do is blame himself. Will himself further from hope. In the Normal Ending, he still has the Protagonist left; where the Bad Ending is concerned, there is nothing remaining to hold him back from the brink of ruin.
Perhaps in some way, Jack hopes for Nicola to be either a son to him, or a little brother. As long as he can retain his humanity and his will to survive, it will help make his duties more bearable and serve to remind him of who he is.

Hi,
I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

The night is young, and he knows it’s only the beginning as he watches her through the thick of the crowd. Theo is certain she hasn’t spotted him just yet - despite the weight of his stare that she undoubtedly feels prickle the back of her neck, spiders legs tickling and leaving a trail of goosebumps into the thick of her hair. There’s a sheen of sweat that has the lights glistening in a scintillation of color in the curve of her collarbones, and he wonders if her friends know she’ll defect from the dancefloor for a drink soon enough.
Fingers click away at the keypad of his phone screen, watching as photographs of her and her friends, her family, cascade through a timeline of the last six months. She’s somewhat estranged from her siblings, neither choosing the life path the rest had, nor condoning the choices they’ve made. It makes her interesting, but somewhat predictable and he’s counted on it over time. Peering through a lens that might put him within her path, even if she’s never really noticed it before. It’s the seed that matters - a familiar face, or voice, that feels normal and comforting. Like she’s heard it a million times away.
Sitting a few tables away at her favorite restaurant. Dropping off a book to the same library. Their trolleys colliding by accident in the isle of her local store.
He’s pieced it together in the same way all those artists of paintings he never understood in his studies might have. A flicker of light here, depth and texture where it’s least expected, and suddenly he realizes what it’s like to be an artist. To manipulate and alter the perception of another to get the response he wants.
Still, it’s only the beginning, and he isn’t foolish enough to believe that he had what he wanted within arms reach just yet. There’s still too many factors, too many choices she has to make that might derail the plan he’s set with steel in his mind. Contingencies are the greatest failsafe, between Nicolas and Aurelie, he’d come to learn as much at an early age. One didn’t ever plan to lose everyone they considered to be family, and yet it happened - a preparation that Theo had been rather guilty in making for himself well before the time came. It held his heart together when it should have fallen to pieces. Would she know how to do so? Would someone else be there for her, or would she face the world from a lonely window? He knows that one day she’ll wish she’d thought about it more, planned for the day it happened. Then again, he supposes that it’s already too late for her now. Too late, as she orders another vodka soda, extra lime. Too late, as his hand reaches over the bar beside her, asking the bartender to put it on his tab. She doesn’t know it yet, but her whole life is about to change. He intends to make it so. Yvonne Rutherford is about to meet the love of her life. And Johnathan Parsons is going to regret letting him live.

COLOUR VARIATIONS IN THE CONFIDANTE COSTUME
ROW 1: Orange/pink. The possibly rarest shade. Maybe even just one dress showing this; that worn by Jeanne Marie Nigl in Stuttgart. The other in this photoset is from Hiroshima, but as seen in the next row it might be pink.
ROW 2: Pink. Very common in the US, not so much elsewhere. Usually quite patterned dresses as well. Here's some of the less patterned and more obviously pink versions, as worn by Kitty Heaton on Broadway and an unidentified actress from the US Tour. Last photo shows a backstage photo of a newer Japanese dress.
ROW 3: Purplish gold. A more ombiguous shade, which can change the look quite a bit from backstage to stage lamps. Seen here is Mel Gowie in West End, unidentified actress from the South Korean revival, and Paige Tuddenham from either Toronto or the Canadian Tour.
ROW 4: Purple. Sometimes it's difficult to separate between purple and more patterned blue dresses, as these too tend to change colour quite a bit on stage. But here is two from West End (unidentified actresses), and one on display in Vienna.
ROW 5: Very blue. The very blue dresses seems to be a recent trend. Here's a fairly new one from the costume maker in the US, a similar US dress worn by Jennifer West in the World Tour revival, and an unidentified actress from the West End revival.
ROW 6: Sky / pale blue. The most common shade. It's what was seen in the original West End production (left), plus to examples from Hamburg, worn by Stephanie Watt and Tanja Petrasek.
ROW 7: Sky / pale blue. More of the same, as worn by an unidentified actress (Lisa Dyby Waddingham?) from early West End days, as well as Eline de Jong in Oberhausen, and Nicola Rutherford in West End.
ROW 8: Metallic green / yellow / undetermined. Some dresses are a bit hard to pinpoint, because they are made of a metallic fabric and it may act up under stage lamps. But here is a greyish/blue/gold dress from the original Stockholm production, a golden dress from the Mexican / Spanish / original Brazilian production, as well as a mint / blue one from the Copenhagen revival. Alas I don't have the name for either actresses.
